annual Back to School Resource Fair on Aug. 20 at the El Monte Valley Mall.

K-12 students were greeted at the entrance with their choice of blue, green, red or black backpacks that they strapped to their chests as they made their way down the Valley Mall. Students stuffed their backpacks with notebooks, pencils, crayons, rulers, erasers, books, water bottles offered by dozens of sponsors and volunteers.

“We had an amazing turnout. The most beautiful part of the day’s event was seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces when they get their backpack,” said El Monte Mayor Pro Tem Victoria Martinez. “I am so thankful

to our city staff, city council and all of our generous sponsors and supporters for helping us make this event a reality for our kids.”

In addition to necessary school supplies, children were offered a new pair of socks, a free haircut provided by the Professional Institute of Beauty for the first 300 kids and additional resources at the healthy family expo where give-a-ways and fresh healthy snacks were in abundance.

Throughout the morning, members of El Monte City Council, as well as local community dignitaries in at-

tendance, spent time writing notes of encouragement and

Mountain View School District (MVSD) is excited to add 60 new certificated staff members to its family for the 2016-17 school year. The new members of Team Mt. View, including teachers, counselors and school psychologists were welcomed to the District at the New Teacher Orientation Meeting held August 15. The information-packed meeting helped acquaint them with MVSD’s standards, policies, programs and core values.

“Welcome to Mountain View,” said Lillian Maldonado French, Superintendent.

“We are so pleased to have you join our Mountain View family. Whether you’re a first time teacher or one with experience, know that you

Metro News Metro will host two community meetings on Wednesday, August 24, as part of the Alternative Analysis for the Rail to Rail/ River Active Transportation Corridor Project Segment B. The meetings will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 3401 E. Florence Avenue in Huntington Park.

As part of the Alternative Analysis process, the community is invited to attend and provide input on the proposed alternatives to connect communities between the Metro Blue Line’s Slauson Station to the Los Angeles River with a potential off-street biking and walking path. An update on Segment A of the Active Transportation Corridor Project will also be provided.

The Rail to Rail/River Active Transportation Corridor Project consists of one corridor that will be built in two phases. Segment A is the Rail to Rail component and Segment B is the Rail to River component. Together they form one route, stretching from South Los Angeles to the Los Angeles River.

• Segment B extends for 2.1 to 4.3 miles between Santa Fe Avenue to a future connection with the Los Angeles River.

The work on the two segments is being conducted concurrently. It is anticipated that the environmental clearance work on Segment A will be completed in June 2017 while the Alternatives Analysis work on Segment B will be completed in March 2017.

Once constructed, the project will increase transit options, provide access for bicyclists and pedestrians to surrounding neighborhoods and improve regional bicycle connections. The active transportation facilities will connect residents and workers to transit, jobs, schools, shopping districts and parks.

Special accommodations and information in alternative formats are available to the public. All requests for reasonable accommodations must be made three working days (72) hours in advance of the scheduled meeting date. Oct. 25, 2014 was the 24th Annual Make A Difference Day; USA Weekend and NBC joined together, so they say.

Nation’s largest day of a community service event; Across USA, it’s the millions of volunteers’s full intent.

To work hard to improve the lives of others; It’s great when helping our sisters and brothers.

They want to inspire the nation just one day each year; Celebrated the 4th Saturday of October, let’s cheer.

I know there’s many people who do this day in and out; Thinking and helping others is what their life is about.

I am blest to be a volunteer for the mid Valley News; Write true stories that rhyme and not sing the blues.

I do enjoy meeting the folks along the way each week; I get a lot more out of it than anyone would think.

I know that you also can make a difference too; If you choose something that you really like to do.

Letter to the Editor Pink Patch Project

Our local police join the Pink Patch Project to raise awareness about breast cancer and the employees at Citizens Business Bank at South El Monte Center are happy to show support for our local police.

From now through October, police officers from 21 different police agencies will be wearing a pink police patch as part of the Pink Patch Project. This is in an effort to bring awareness of breast cancer and raise funds for research and support.

After attending the El Monte /South El Monte Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting this morning, Jacky Nevares, employee at Citizens Business Bank and a Member of the Chamber, got back to the banking office and she sold

the first batch of 25 South El Monte Police Patches by noon time. Each patch $10 fundraising. She called the El Monte Police Captain David Vautrin and he and the Chief of Police stopped by to drop of a second batch (25 more) and took photos with our staff.

Jerry Velasco was the consummate entertainment figure over thirty years ago- actor, producer, public relations consultant and talent manager. Jerry was immersed in every phase of what we consider “Hollywood” except that he was based in El Monte. Jerry was a close friend of the iconic Ricardo Montalban whom he considered his mentor and in 1999 the duo pulled off one of the greatest minority entertainment coups of all time – the successful bid and purchase of the historic Doolittle Theater in Hollywood after an emotional and detailed pitch to the L.A. City Council resulting in the Ricardo Montalban Foundation Theater.

Through his many contacts, Jerry Velasco made the city of El Monte in the fifties and sixties, a “happening” regional entertainment

capital second only to Hollywood. The San Gabriel valley city was uniquely positioned to host multi-ethnic live performances, television productions and events that might not have been possible in other venues that were often closed to minority talent.

In 2013, Jerry Velasco was elected treasurer to the very city whose reputation as a regional entertainment capital he helped burnish and was elected in November as a member of the El Monte City Council. “Si se puede Jerry!”

‘Time Jockey’ Course of History

Mission Decay .... In 1851, Hugo Reid wrote about the decay of the San Gabriel Mission, its fall from more prosperous days and documented the decline of the Mission.

Padre Tomas Estenaga first arrived at the Mission while it was still in its flourishing condition. But in 1834 the Mexican Congress passed a law secularizing all Mexican missions, especially the 21 California Missions. The law identified that each Indian was to receive his own share of land, gardens and livestock but like most laws giving privileges to Indians the law was soon abolished.

Rather than allowing the clergy to secularize the assets of the missions an administrator was appointed to oversee the separation.

However, Padre Tomas knew what was about to happen and instead of leaving it to the administrators to distribute Mission holdings; he instead started destroying Mission property. The back building of the Mission was unroofed and the lumber was used for firewood. Cattle was killed, halved and distributed in large amounts to the people living within the Mission surroundings. The vineyards were ordered to be cut down however the Indians refused to cut the vines after all the hard work they put forward in growing them. It did not take very long to destroy what took years to grow and when General Figueroa arrived to take over the administration of the Mission, there was very little left for him to work with. Padre Tomas remained as minister of the Mission and received a stipend of $1,500 per year and fulfilled his duties according to the new law.

The nuns of Mission were unmarried Indian women who were freed from their duties under the secularization law but Padre Tomas brought them back into the Mission system and supported them with his paid stipend. Everything Padre Tomas received in payment, he put back into the cost to maintain and support the people of the Rancheria.

Administrators came and left and a new administrator would be brought in to take over. The cycle continued and eventually Padre Tomas was replaced. Indians were constantly running off and in time a majority of them moved north while the In-

dians from San Diego, San Luis and San Juan wandered out to the ranchos of Los Angeles seeking work.

The abundance of laborers produced low wages for the workers and competition to remain employed became heightened. The Indians became demoralized by their treatment and lack of the opportunities. The depressed situation provided an opportunity for people from Sonora to come in and create havoc. Under the direction of the Sonoran’s, Indian men were taught to drink and gamble while Indian women were taught things much worse. The Indians were taught the worse vices of life and without the Church to protect and control them; many started to commit crimes which they had not previously been involved with. Crimes like theft and stealing became more common and the serene Mission lifestyle became a thing of the past.

In roughly 60 years, the San Gabriel Mission rose to a very prosperous operation only to fall to a disastrous conclusion. Political decisions caused the rise as well as the fall, decisions that would go on and change the course of history…..

Visiting the Capitol of Australia

Hello from Australia!

This past week we went to Canberra, the Capitol of Australia. We visited many sites including the National Museum of Australia, Parliament House, and the Australian War Memorial. The Australian War Memorial was one of the most moving experiences we have had. They had the names of every soldier that had lost their lives for their country engraved into the walls, called the Roll of Honour, and there were vibrant red poppies that decorated those walls in honor of the fallen soldiers. At the end of the day, they held the closing

ceremony called “The Last”.

They told the life story of one of the fallen soldiers, and how he died defending his country. What was amazing for us was the fact that they do this every day; every day they honor a different name on the Roll of Honour.

After witnessing this moving ceremony, we stopped

Now, our trip wouldn’t be complete without touching kangaroos and koalas!

On Friday we went to Featherdale Wildlife Park and checked touching the animals off our list. Koalas

sleep for 20 hrs a day and eat for the other 4. Luckily one Koala was awake and available for us to touch. We definitely cuddled and took plenty of pictures. In addition, there were a lot of kangaroos around the park and we got to feed them. They are so soft, and followed you everywhere for food.

Featherdale had just about every Australian animal you could name. From small animals to snakes to large ones like crocodiles, we all had a really fun time at Featherdale Wildlife Park! Thanks for reading, and hope you learned a little more about the land down under.

New Program Makes Metro Reduced Fare College Passes Easier to Purchase

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) Board of Directors today unanimously approved a two-year pilot program for a new Universal College Student Fare Program (U-Pass) that will make participating in the college pass program much easier and will allow full and part-time students from all college districts in the service area to participate.

The program will launch in time for the 2016 fall term.

site, since over the last several years school districts throughout the state have experienced drastic funding cuts and decreases in staffing. Maldonado French shared that it is exciting and wonderful to see the staff growing again.

Welcoming the new educators, MVSD Board of Education President, Adam Carranza shared that they have the Board of Education’s full support.

“The Board is here to support you to meet our goal of transforming our students’ lives,” said Carranza. “Our students and families are the inspiration and hope for what we want to do as a school district and our efforts to provide them access to education is something that is dear to our hearts.

As a former student and employee, I can tell you it truly is a family here in MVSD and we are very excited to have you on our team.”

Dr. Michelle Harold, Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services provided an overview of the District and introduced District administrators and Laura Gaber, the president of the teachers’ union. Each new educator received a large handbook full of resources to help them throughout the school year. The handbook outlines a month to month guide for the first year in the classroom and includes several materials to assist in planning. They also received the book, The First Days of School – How to be an Effective Teacher.

Veteran MVSD teachers, Anna Marie Mezin-Williams and Doug Jones provided tips on effective classroom management, information on the California Standards and strategies for working with English Language Learners, special education students, as well as ideas for effective lesson planning throughout the school year.

“This is my 30th year teaching in Mountain View and you will find there is phenomenal support in this District. It is overwhelming to be a new teacher but we are here to help you so don’t ever hesitate to call or reach

out. I love teaching and you are on an adventure that will be nothing but enjoyable,” said Mezin-Williams.

First year teacher, George Berruecos who will be teaching Physical Education at Maxson, Baker and Voorhis is excited to start the school year.

“The new teacher orientation and professional development we’ve been provided has been awesome.

I’m happy to be in Mountain View and it is a District that really cares about physical education and wellness. I’m looking forward to getting started and meeting my students,” said Berruecos.

Sandra Jones is returning to MVSD where she worked as an instructional assistant and IMC clerk while working on her teaching credential. She taught in another district before coming back to MVSD this year. She will be an RSP (Resource Specialist Program) teacher at Madrid Middle School and Magnolia Learning Center.

“I’m really excited about the school year and really looking forward to it. The meetings and information provided has been great and I feel like I have all the support I need to have a great year,” said Jones

Rio Hondo College’s groundbreaking Automotive Technology Program received approval April 27 to offer California’s first Associate of Science degree in hybrid/electric vehicle/ fuel-cell technology, a highdemand career field.

The approval from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office came in just 22 days – an incredibly quick turnaround that acknowledges the strength of the program, said Professor John Frala, who designed the Associate of Science degree.

“Companies are calling me about employees already,” Frala said. “These

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of a tough stretch.

Tonight they play the sec-ond of a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants at home.

They follow this with three games against the Chicago Cubs and then go to Colorado to face the Rockies for three more.

If all goes well, they’ll be sitting on top in the National League West…If all goes poorly, they could find themselves struggling to hold on to a playoff spot.

And..in my outspoken opinion, that is just fine by me.

Question for Dodgers fans, would you rather miss the playoffs or lose a one-game play-off to the Miami Marlins?

The Marlins, of course, are currently being led by former Dodger manager Don Mattingly. ***Did you know Los Angeles Rams defensive end William “Midnight Express” Hayes says he believes in mermaids?

While Hayes is a little bit out there in his belief system, the team is starting to believe in backup running back Malcolm Brown.

While the 100-meters might be the most important sprint in the world, in the United States the most important sprint is the 40-yard dash because of how it is used to determine the functional speed of a football player.

El Monte Volleyball opened its season yesterday against Covina and starts league play on September 8 at Pasadena Marshall.

Temple City and Rosemead meet on August 30th.

It will be the season opener for the Lady Rams. Under Lyle Takeshita TC finished 6-14 in 2015 and in fifth

place in the Rio Hondo League. The Lady Rams have suffered through 12 consecutive losing seasons.

Area power San Gabriel, 28-4-1 a season ago, starts its season this week and opens Almont League play against Alhambra on September 22.

Speaking of San Gabriel,

they’ll face Maranatha in the Minutemen’s opener on August 30. Maranatha went 20-11 in 2015.

Team to keep and eye on?

Monrovia.

The Wildcats went 19-11 last year and return 10 of the 11 players from their roster in 2015.

The Peterson Principle

I was talking to Arroyo’s biggest fan James Markoya, otherwise known as “The Wolf” Friday night at the Arcadia-San Marino scrimmage and we were going over Arroyo’s schedule.

“The Wolf” likes this Arroyo team (When doesn’t he like the Arroyo team?), but he acknowledged that last year’s first-round playoff loss to Covina was painful. That it was but we both agreed that should Arroyo get by the Colts, which is a good possibility considering the Knights will come out with that defeat still fresh on its mind, they should go 9-1.

Look at their non-league schedule. We’ll concede the loss to Hart on the road, The Los Angeles Rams would have trouble with that one, but who else is going to beat them? Temple City? Rowland? Not likely.

Then Mission Valley League play starts and Arroyo should roll through that. Rosemead will be a test in the first league game but beyond that, it looks like cruise control for Jim Singiser’s troops.

So there you go, coach.

It’s all set up for a 9-1 regular season (8-2 is acceptable) and a first-round home playoff game. No pressure, though. **Yes, we added Buena Park to our coverage area.

The Coyotes have blown up since Anthony White took over as head coach, and seemingly have D1 coaches visiting their campus on a weekly basis. We cover teams down the 605 anyway so adding Buena Park makes since.

That being said I’m not sure we’ll have anybody out at Pasadena this week to cover the BP-PHS game.

While I’m still trying to figure out why Arroyo added Hart this year I’m also scratching my head over Buena Park and Pasadena. The Bulldogs are getting better (5-5 last year including a win over Muir in the Turkey Tussle) but are still not in Buena Park’s class. I don’t really see how a 42-7 defeat will help the program. And for Buena Park does beating up on Pasadena help them get ready for the Freeway League? I’m hearing from the Coyote faithful about getting out there and although I like the local flavor, I’m not sure sending a writer out there is worth it. We’ll see. **I Like the choice of Max Browne over Sam Darnold at USC but let’s face it if the season started

Arcadia and San Marino scrimmaged Friday at Arcadia as they continue to get ready to kick things off for real next week. The Apaches held the Titans scoreless while finding the end zone three times themselves on two deep balls and a long break away run.

The Apaches offense looked explosive at times and although the defense did come up with a couple of big hits the shutout appeared to be more of San Marino’s struggles in moving the ball.

Three touchdowns to none for the Apaches so we’ll call it 18-0.

Valle Lindo School District will notify the household of their children’s eligibility for free meals if any household member receives CalFresh, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), or Food Distribution Program Indian Reservations (FDPIR) benefits. Her early passing made her an unfortunate member of the “27” club with fellow legendary musicians Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison and leaving behind a short legacy of music that was distinctly hers. A discography that would never be heard on a live stage

again….or so I thought. The Winehouse Experience is a tribute show that has been aptly named and completely lives up to its moniker. Mia Karter embodies the British ingénue in both grace and sustenance, but it’s Mia’s voice that really brings Winehouse to life. Backed by a seriously tight rhythmic band featuring Ben Garza and Luke Alvarez and danc-

ing background singers, Daniel Nelson on Keys, David Tilove on Drums, David Miller on Trumpet, Steve Wilson on Sax, Mark Drummond on Guitar and Daniel “D$” Hernandez on Bass… one could not imagine Amy Winehouse and her legend in better hands. This band definitely needs to be experienced to have its magic and beauty wash all over you.

I picked 3 cameras that are the best for taking pictures for an average person. Each of these cameras will have similar features like removable lens and 1080P HD Video recording. If you purchase any of these cameras with good knowledge on photography you’ll be able to take some incredible photos. These cameras are all priced under $1000.

Most affordable camera goes to the Canon EOS Rebel T5 currently for sale with an EF lens 18-55mm. Priced

at $399 it is the most affordable camera, but you will have to buy a memory card for $20 for a 16GB. The camera boasts an 18 megapixel APS-C CMOS Sensor, which means it is not a full frame camera. So when you take a photo you will not have a full 55mm picture but a cropped picture. It has a great lens for portrait and landscape photos and is a great entry level camera for beginners in photography or a great vacation camera.

For a photographer, it has

an ISO 100-6400 and uses Canons DIGIC 4 image processor.

Best Video Recording DSLR goes to Nikon D3300 sporting a 24 megapixel and also uses a crop sensor so you won’t get a full image.

Priced at $550 it also has a 18-55mm lens. What you get for that extra $150 is video capabilities. D3300 can record 1080 at 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 frames per second. You’ll be able to record any scenario with that camera. You will have to buy a larger memory card for videos and a microphone for better audio. So you will spend probably another $150 more for a full video recording camera. The quality you get though will be great and everyone will be impressed with your vacation videos.

Don’t forget it also takes photos, and it does a great job at that, too.

In my last section I looked for the best bundle online.

The best deal was found on Amazon for the Canon T6 DSLR. The bundle is priced at $630 and it comes with a lot. It comes with 2 lens,

the first standard 18-55mm and also a zoom lens of 75-300mm. Great for sports and hard to reach shots. It comes with filters for the lens that help with sun issues and wide angle add-ons for a wider shot as well as

a bag to hold everything. It includes two memory cards, a 32 GB and a 16 GB. The camera also has Wi-Fi and NFC to send the photos you took your phone for instant sharing.

With the war in Iraq raging on, Efraim Diveroli offers childhood friend David Packouz a chance to make big bucks by becoming an international arms dealer.

Together, they exploit a government initiative that allows businesses to bid on U.S. military contracts.

Starting small allows the duo to rake in money and live the high life. They soon find themselves in over their heads after landing a $300 million deal to supply Afghan forces, a deal which puts them in business with some very shady people.

Based on true events that happened during the Afghanistan War. The film is directed by Todd Phillips who is best known for directing comedies like “The Hangover” franchise and “Old School” and “Due Date.” Guy Lawson wrote the Rolling Stone article that inspired this movie and eventually also wrote a book about it. Stephne Chin, Jason Smilovic, and Todd Phillips wrote the script. “War Dogs” stars are Miles Tyler who plays David Packouz, who is known for “Whiplash” and “Fantastic Four.” Jonah Hill plays Efraim Diveroli who is best known for “SuperBad” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
