Malala’s foundation, The Malala Fund, plans to welcome approximately two hundred girls at the school placed near the Syrian border, Buzzfeed News reports. As the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace prize and the forefront of children’s education, Malala has inspired

thousands of people from all walks of life. Her dedication to her service and humble persona has welcomed many youths to look up to her- myself included. The measure of her accomplishments at such a young age is nothing in comparison to her work, in which she seems to obtain a yearning passion to complete. Malala Yousafzai has proved, in the twentyfirst century, that age does not equate to the difference someone can make on the world

He yelled, “yeah, you”!

I am thinking, “what did I do”?

He said, “stand over there in front of the wall”; I stood there real straight and tall.

He said, “put your arms behind your back”; I knew this guy was not going to give me any slack.

“Fifty years ago, ordinary citizens courageously took a stand and rallied a nation’s conscience by marching from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. Brave men and women pushed their leaders to expand the boundaries of freedom. In doing so, the powerless changed the world’s greatest power,” said Supervisor Hilda L. Solis.

“Right now, in 2015, 50 years after Selma, there are laws across this country designed to make it harder for people to vote. Yet, if the passage of the Voting Rights Act taught us anything, it’s that our work is never done.

When we stand for equity and justice, we set aside our complacency and indiffer-

ence. Anyone eligible to register to vote in Los Angeles County should not be denied the right to vote,” Supervisor Solis said.

Summer Travels Summer Family Fun: Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park

While traveling in Lake Tahoe, I stopped at the Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. This area is absolutely beautiful. History tells us that Sugar Pine Point had a boom in development with the 1859 discovery of silver in nearby Virginia City. With the demand for lumber, this area flourished and regal hotels and family resorts were built around the lake.

“General William Phipps, a Kentucky frontiersman, was the first permanent nonnative resident on Tahoe’s West Shore. He staked a homestead claim on Sugar Pine Point in 1860.” People continued to settle in the area and in 1899 the railway “linked Tahoe City with Truckee and San Francisco.”

Then, by 1915 there was a road that connected all the lakeside communities. More and more people traveled to Lake Tahoe. It became a premier vacation spot.

At the park you will find the Pine Lodge known as the Ehrman Mansion. “In the late 1800s, internationally known West Coast banker Isaias Hellman visited the area on a business trip.” He loved the area and bought property on Sugar Pine Point. Hellman hired Walter Danforth Bliss, a well-known architect at the time to design a summer home for his family.

She married Sidney Ehrman and they maintained summer family traditions at Pine Lodge. “The lodge and its estate were sold to the State of California in 1965. First named Sugar Pine Point State Park, the park was renamed Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park in 2004.” Tours of the home are available. It is a wonderfully designed estate with spectacular views of the lake and forest.

which would promote the rich ideals of education and the leaders which encouraged those ideals. The high school was to be named Mark Keppel, the former Superintendent of Los Angeles County schools. The school was to be designed with the greatest and most modern features of any school in the state. The 13acre campus was to be constructed with administration offices, classrooms, laboratories, workshops and athletic facilities. The school was ready for students in the fall of 1939, and the first class graduated in the spring of 1940. The inaugural annual was named Teocalli, and the various groups of administrators, teachers and students were named in construction terms such as Builders, Assistant Engineers, Foremen, Craftsmen and Artisans. Over the years, Keppel has battled with its tri-city cross-town rivals Alhambra and San Gabriel High Schools but in the first year of Mark Keppel High School, no football team was fielded. Instead, the initial high school annual honored Alhambra High School in their CIF Championship season, a tribute which Mark Keppel himself would have been proud…..

New Hispanic Majority …. The Census Bureau released the latest population numbers for the entire State of California and reported that 14.99 million Hispanics live in the state.

The number edges out the 14.92 million whites living in the state making Hispanics the largest ethnic group in California. The figures make California only the third state that has does not have a white plurality with Hawaii and New Mexico being the first two states.

Since 1990, the California Hispanic population has nearly doubled and by 2060 it is expected to reach 49% of the entire state’s population. The median age of the Hispanic population is 29 years old, while the median age of the white population is 45. California is the most Hispanic populated state with Los Angeles County, the most populated county in the United States. The growing Hispanic population brings up an interesting side story from 1968.

U.S. Representative George E. Brown Jr., Democrat representing the 60th District, presented to congress his displeasure about the high number of Hispanics being drafted. He stated that the draft was unfair as Hispanics could not afford alternative methods of getting a deferment such as attending a college or university. The 1960 Census recorded less than 10% Hispanics in Los Angeles County. But of the 623 Los Angeles County men killed in Vietnam in 1968, 132 were Hispanic named. This represents 21%, well above the percentage of Hispanics living in all of L.A. County. In all of California, the total Hispanic population represented 9% of the total population; however of the total number of men killed in Vietnam, 19% were Hispanic. Whether a majority or a minority ethnic group, Hispanic population numbers continue to make news…..

Bosco Tech Bingo Receives 2015 Best of Rosemead Award

Don Bosco Technical Institute’s (Bosco Tech) Bingo has been selected for the 2015 Best of Rosemead Award in the Casinos category by the Rosemead Award Program.

Each year, the program recognizes companies for exceptional marketing success in their community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community. Various sources of information are gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category, determined by information gathered internally by the Rosemead Award Program

and data provided by third parties.

Bosco Tech’s popular weekly Bingo program provides significant scholarship and tuition assistance for hard-working students in grades 9-12. Parent volunteers commit hundreds of hours to supporting the program that provides bright young men with the gift of a Bosco Tech education.

Bingo is every Saturday night from 5 to 10 p.m.

Every weekend, we have free time with our families.

On Saturday night, Tom Smithers, one of the Australians, had a party for all the American exchange students and their host siblings. On Sunday, Amy Fradd, Ariana Pinedo, and Alyssa Micallef (Ariana’s host sibling), and I went to Castle Hill Shops to do some shopping. We also went to the Max Brenner Chocolate Bar, and we ate lots and lots of chocolate. It was the perfect way to end the weekend.

On July 27th, I went to school, and on July 28th, the rest of the students and I went to the Blue Mountains and had morning tea. Next, we went to the Three Sisters, an unusual rock formation representing three sisters who, according to legend, turned into stone. We also visited Scenic World, where we got to go on Scenic Railway, the steepest railway in the world, and Scenic Skyway, which provides breathtaking views of the Three Sisters and Katoomba Falls.

It was an adventure filled day with stunning views and lots of steep steps.

On July 29th, the students and I started our two day visit to Canberra, Australia’s capital. We first stopped at Australian Institute of Sport.

We got to try out sport activities, such as sprinting and basketball. We also got to see where Australian athletes train. After AIS, we went to the Australian War Memorial. We got to see “Polly”, an Australian aircraft flew

We also got to see the Hall of Memory and the Roll of Honor. The last thing we saw was the closing ceremony, where a member of the Australian Navy told the public a story about one of the many fallen soldiers. Finally, we went to the Telstra Tower to look at the view of Canberra. By the way, it was very, very, very cold at the top of the tower.

On July 30th, we went to the Parliament House, and we got to go inside the upper house and the lower house. We also saw paintings of all the government officials and prime ministers of Australia. After our tour of the Parliament House, we went to Questacon, which is the equivalent to the California Science Center. There was a section where you can experience freefalling, and there was another section where you can see caged lightening. Questacon had a many entertaining hands-on activities.

San Gabriel Launches Free WIFI

The City of San Gabriel this week launched a new wireless Internet network that is now available to the public at no cost at city facilities and parks.

The network, called “SG Connect,” will provide access to free Wi-Fi at City Hall, the Public Works yard, the Police Department, the Fire Department’s two stations, the Community Recreation Center, Smith Park, the Mission Playhouse, Vincent Lugo Park and the Adult Recreation Center and Grapevine Park.

The new wireless network will help increase efficiency among city employees as well as provide a public service to visitors and community members who are using city parks and facilities. The city already had a limited Wi-Fi network at some facilities, but SG Connect is a much more advanced and expanded network. In addition, this is the first time that city Wi-Fi has been offered to the public.

SG Connect fulfills an important goal of the city’s Information Technology

Master Plan, approved by the City Council, which seeks to modernize the city’s public infrastructure.

“The City of San Gabriel is proud to offer free Wi-Fi to the public in all of our public spaces,” Mayor Jason Pu said. “We believe it will benefit our economic development and community engagement efforts and be a valuable service to all of our residents, businesses and visitors.”

How crowded was last Friday’s Angels-Dodgers match at Chavez Ravine?

So crowded that I parked in a part of the stadium I’ve never seen in forty years of attending games there. When I pulled into an upper lot I saw a sign that read; “Welcome to South Pasadena.”

That might be a little extreme, but you get my point. I can say, with honesty, when my family decided to skip the fireworks after the game we were still walking to my truck when the show ended. ***In regards to the recent MLB trading deadline line, I always wonder what would happen if Mid Valley News editor Devette Johnson had the option of dealing me. For the most part I think she likes me, but I also believe there are times she would like to send me packing to the Rosemead Review for a draft pick. ***As a New York Mets fan, it was really good to see the Dodgers sweep the Angels over the weekend.

Then again, it would be great to see Russia sweep the Angels three straight.

The Los Angeles Galaxy scored three times in the second half to overcome a

halftime deficit and beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1 Saturday night in Colorado.

It’s the first time the Galaxy has won away from the StubHub Center in 346 days as the road winless streak had reached 15 games.

Los Angeles tied it in the second half when Sebastian Lletget put one in off of an assist from Juninho in the 56th minute. Thirteen minutes later Steven Gerrard’s shot was tipped away but Alan Gordon jumped on it and knocked it in for a 2-1 lead. Robbie Keane finished things with a late goal to secure the victory.

Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made his debut in the net for the Galaxy. He was acquired this week after Jorge Penedo was placed on waivers at his request.

The Dodgers may have not got what they wanted prior to last Friday’s trade deadline but when all was said and done it looks like they got exactly what they needed.

They didn’t get Cole Hamels, David Price or Johnny Cueto but they also didn’t trade Corey Seager, Julio Urias or any other top prospects in the organization. Sure they gave up Hector Olivera, who they just signed to a big contract recently, but Olivera is 30 and plays third base. Justin Turner, who is hitting over .300, is 30 and plays third base. Alex Guerrero also plays third base.

Olivera was expendable.

For a bunch of unknown minor leaguers other than Olivera, the Dodgers bolstered their starting rotation with Mat Latos and Alex Wood, their bullpen with Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan and landed a top infield prospect in Jose Peraza. Some scouts say Peraza could be a solid major leaguer for the next decade.

If you land Price or Hamels and give up Seager but don’t win this year, then what? Both pitchers could be done in two or three years while Seager goes on to a Hall of Fame career. Landing an established ace doesn’t always guarantee a championship. Instead they’ve acquired the necessary parts to give them a shot at the title without mortgaging the future.

The Dodgers were winners on this trade deadline. Now let’s see where they are in October. **The Bell Gardens faithful are out in full force now that Montebello quarterback Ryan Rivera has been spotlighted.

I can see honking for your school, but was it necessary to take shots at Rivera? The kid had a great run down the stretch and the Oilers are looking for big things from him this year. We spotlight certain players and Rivera happened to be one of them.

We’ve had the spotlight on Bell Gardens players in the past and I’m sure we will again. By the way, just for the record, who is the starting quarterback for the Lancers this year? Send me the scoop. **Most of the schools are on dead period now. When they come back this week they will be in helmet and pads. Everything gets underway for keeps in 25 days.

Tabatai Goes to Baldwin Park

Brian Tabatabai, who was removed from the El Monte staff in May, has landed at Baldwin Park as the offensive coordinator he confirmed Monday.

Tabatabai, an out of the box thinker as the Lions OC, brought an excitement to the El Monte game plan.

Good examples being his leaving of the offense on the field on fourth down and

always going for two points after a touchdown.

He was also instrumental in guiding quarterback Brandon Martinez to big years in 2011 and 2012.

Martinez threw for 2160 and 27 touchdowns in 2011 and followed that up with 4286 yards and 44 TDs in 2012. The Lions made the playoffs both years, advancing to the second round of

the playoffs in 2012 before losing to Paraclete.

Tabatabai will meet a new challenge in Baldwin Park where he will join James Heggins’ staff. Heggins returned as the Braves head coach this year, taking over for Daniel Al-gattas who stepped down after one season.

It’s August. Get ready for some football!

Prep Athletic Season to Start

Of course football is one of the most popular sports around these days, but also joining the fray this fall will be Girls tennis and Girls volleyball. The Boys in these sports will compete in the spring.

Boys’ water polo begins in the fall, with the Girls getting into the water and the game in the spring.

To add to the breakdown winter sports, like wrestling and basketball begin in December for both Boys and Girls. The traditional spring sports like baseball, track, and soccer begin going full throttle in late February.

The music of the rock & pop band Chicago has become part of the musical lexicon of our pop culture.

This past June Temple City featured Kenny Cetera & The Chicago Experience and this particular tribute band is unique among its peers. Kenny Cetera happens to be the brother of Peter Cetera who goes by the nickname “The Voice,” and was one of the lead singers and bass player for the band Chicago. Kenny Cetera was also a member of the classic rock band and now takes his tribute to Chicago for shows all across this country and around the world. film is the use of gadgets, but this film didn’t really use much and I was a little disappointed but the story is great. “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” is an action movie that will thrill you with practical effects and real stunts performed by the actual actors. The fifth installment of “Mission Impossible” is proving to break current trends. Lately films with

bankable big stars are not doing so well. “Terminator Genisys” has earned around 90 million dollars make the

Arnold draw very weak, Adam Sandler’s “Pixels” is also just earned a measly 45 million dollars. Tom Cruise “Mission Impossible” franchise has risen and improved earning a solid 56 million dollars. The franchise has made 5 films and each one is unique in its own way, especially the first one that started Tom Cruise dangling from the ceiling accessing a computer that has a touch sensitive floor. When of the biggest draws of the “Mission Impossible” franchise is that Tom Cruise does his own stunts and every movie just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher, Edge of Tomorrow, and Valkyrie) wrote and directed the film. He has a good relationship with Cruise and have worked together many times. The film brings all the cast back from the previous film; Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible), and brings in Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules). In this film, Ethan and his team take on the syndicate, an international rogue organization highly skilled and committed to destroying the world and other government agencies. This film is great if you liked the previous films.
