Mountain View School District’s 10-day Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL) Summer Bridge Program enabled kindergarten through 3rd grade English language learners to get a jump start on the school year. During the summer program teachers utilized thematic units of instruction focusing on insects in kindergarten, the ocean in 1st grade, the environment in 2nd grade and fossils in 3rd grade as they implemented Common Core and English Language Development standards to develop the students’ language and literacy skills. SEAL is a comprehensive model of intensive, enriched language and literacy

education for students in preschool through 3rd grade and is used throughout the district during the school year. SEAL pushes students to use richer language in curriculum incorporating literature, social studies and science taught through popular themes such as animals and the solar system. All of the SEAL classrooms feature similar techniques jointly developed by teachers including collaborative conversation between pairs of students to develop oral skills, charts labeled with words to build vocabulary, and frequent writing assignments. Designed to be alive with language the summer SEAL classrooms were buzzing

with conversations as teachers engaged the students to talk about what they were learning, ask questions, and predict and wonder about their world. MVSD’s SEAL teachers use rich, expressive language to create an environment where academic vocabulary comes to life. Every classroom is vibrant and enriching with studentproduced work adorning the walls. “Did you know that

bees are the only insect that makes honey?” asked Andrew a kindergartner and budding entomologist. “I was scared of bees before but now I’m not because I know they are helpful and important.” The ocean and marine life were explored by 1st graders who were engaged in collaborative conversations about octopus, rainbow fish, krill, crabs, the ocean animals’ food chain and much more.

Pokémon Go by Glen Maldonado National

Pokemon Go is an app that has only been out for about a week and already has broken records. Pokemon Go uses augmented reality and was developed by Nintendo based on the popular franchise Pokemon. Augmented reality means the game uses real world locations with your camera to make, let’s say Pikachu, appear in your front yard or park. The app was started as an April fool’s joke by Google and later actually developed by Google and Nintendo. The cost to actually develop the game was about $30 million. The way Pokemon GO works is that it uses Google maps to integrate Pokemon into the real world. Using real world locations like church art works and parks as poke stops. These places must be reached in person so you have to go to the spots. This is making people who usually stay home and play games

actually go out. There are a lot more people now that are going to go for walks that weren’t going before. Of course there are some drawbacks as well. People are going to bad areas and getting into trouble. A man caused an accident on a freeway because he saw a Pikachu. A young girl

found a dead body while she more than before. I noticed trespassed onto a property. a few poke stops and walked Some poke stops are placed to them. There was actuin private properties. Other ally one by my home at the people aren’t looking where bus stop. I went to Tony they are walking and are Arceo Memorial Park and falling or tripping. Some saw a gym there and a few robbers are using the app as poke stops. Many people well to find victims phones were around doing the same to steal.
