On Saturday, June 25, 2016, Congresswomen Grace F. Napolitano (DEl Monte) and Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) joined forces with the California Army National Guard, the City of Azusa, and local veterans organizations to bring the VA to the U.S. Army National Guard Armory in Azusa to assist San Gabriel Valley veterans with their casework.

As part of Region XV of ACSA, Mountain View School District was pleased to honor Rosanna Gonzalez as its Golden Apple recipient.

Rosanna is a teacher at Twin Lakes Elementary School and has been a valued member of the Mountain View School District team for 30 years. During

by Mavis Hansen Wow, Can you believe that half of this year is gone?

Believe it or not, Monday, will be the 4th of July, the holiday when Americans celebrate the birthday of the United States of America.

Over the years, the 4th of July has been associated with many activities. For some, it marks the beginning of summer fun. Beaches, parks and amusement areas are typically filled with holiday crowds but nearly everyone looks forward to the evening fireworks which bring delight to both adults and children. A day of more than one celebration for me, as my only daughter, Debbie was born on the July 4th.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEBBIE! (Debbie Clark, graduate of Arroyo High School and who became Mrs. Kempton when she married Ken). No matter how you spend your day, have a safe, fun and happy day.

A great way to start off your July 4th is with the Pancake Breakfast hosted by the El Monte Police Officers’ Association and Auxiliary to be held from 8:00 AM until 11:30 AM at the Grace T. Black Auditorium of the El Monte Community Center, 3130 N. Tyler Avenue, El Monte. Cost is only $5.00 and tickets are being sold by many of the service organizations such as the El Monte Women’s Club and El Monte Business and Professional Women.

The traditional FREE BIKE GIVEAWAY will be held at the breakfast. There is no charge to enter the Bike Giveaway which is for children 14 years of age and under. Ask any policeman for a slip to enter.

EL MONTE FRIEND O’GARDEN CLUB started off their 1916-17 club year with a special luncheon meeting held at the El Sombrero Restaurant, 3550 Santa Anita Avenue, El Monte.

The meeting began with the installation of new officers, conducted by Immediate Past President Sandy Fout.

The beautiful Rainbow and its many colors was the theme. Officers installed were: President: Steve Heimple, First Vice President: Bobbie McGowan, Second Vice President: Sandy Fout, Secretary: Rita Cazares, Treasurer: Blanca Figueroa and Parliamentarian Mavis Hansen. Mavis will also serve as Arboretum District Representative.

Also serving as Arboretum District Officers are Rita Cazares, Treasurer and Mavis

Hansen, Secretary. Special guest for the meeting was Emily Wisneski, Director (President) of the Arboretum District of California Garden Clubs. The program was presented by Gardener Mike Garcia, bringing information on many gardening subjects such as artificial turf, sod, watering during the drought and new water saving systems and soil treatments. Not only a very interesting and informative program for all members, but all were gifted with a package of soil conditioner and a hand gardening tool.

Friend O’Garden Club was started in 1956 and the first President was Mamie B. Capo-Harriott. Membership is open to those who have an active interest in gardening.

Meetings are held on the first Friday of each month, 11:30 AM at the Norwood Library, 4550 N. Peck Road, El Monte. Brown bag lunch is encouraged and refreshments and dessert are provided by a monthly host/hostess. A short business meeting is normally followed by a program on various gardening subjects.

Short trips and special events are also planned at various times. Current special community involvement is a grade school garden program and the making of favors for a senior care center. Friend O’Garden Club is a member of the Arboretum District, California Garden Clubs, Inc. Pacific Region of Garden Clubs, Inc. and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Members are encouraged to attend District, State and National meetings.

The ARBORETUM DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA GARDEN CLUBS holds meetings three times a year in the Palm Room of the Los Angeles County Arboretum, 301 N. Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia. A meeting was held on Monday, June 27th and the next Arboretum District Meeting will be held on Monday, September 26th, which will be the last meeting for this year. There are nine local garden clubs in the San Gabriel Valley which belong to the Arboretum District. The Arboretum District and the Friend O’Garden Club always welcome guests. Reservations are not required and there is no charge.

Bias in the Literary World

J.K. Rowling, whether you care for her works or not, changed the literary world tremendously, especially for female authors, after writing and publishing one of the most successful book series in history, “Harry Potter.”

Her famous quote, “Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic,” (Rowling) confirms that words and literature can hold immense amounts of power.

In a more tangible sense, she was able to find stability, wealth, and fame as an author, as many others have throughout history, because of the words she wrote and shared with the world.

such as Rowling gain that interest me. The reception of a novel is often monumental for an author’s career. I am forced to question how this may differ when an author is already established as “great” and if there is certain bias shown towards “classics” and their authors, causing me to wonder what qualifies them as classics to begin with. And so I ask, to what extent might a person’s identity impact the way in which their literature is received?

For instance, while avid fans of Jane Austen identify her works as some of the best ever written, certain critics (while in the minority) might say otherwise. For instance, one online critic

did not feel restricted from claiming to “find Austen’s preoccupation with portraiture occasionally tiresome….Her novels can be too long; her plots can drag.”

What is it that causes one person to view the author’s writing so highly, while the other openly lists the flaws of the piece? Could it be that one person holds an emotional connection to the novels that the other person does not? Or is one simply correct in their opinion and the other wrong?

These are all questions I will continue to inquire about. It’s an awfully good excuse to pick up a good book and read, and so I encourage you to do the same.

City of El Monte Celebrates Mountain View School District’s 15th Annual Community Milestones, Chess Competition Accomplishments

City of El Monte residents had multiple reasons to be proud of their community and peers during a special city council meeting on the last week in May, at the El Monte Community Center.

It was an evening dedicated to celebrating the milestones and accomplishments of men, women and children throughout the city.

The highest honor of the night was reserved for the El Monte Police Department, which received the Seven Seals Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program. The award was presented for the city’s support of Detective Eduardo Nafarrate’s service to the nation as a United States Army Reserve.

“I am humbled and grateful to be a part of this city

and community of leaders,” Nafarrate said. “Individuals like Sergeant Richard Luna and Chief David Reynoso have made a tremendous impact in my life personally and professionally as well as in the community.”

The Seven Seals Award is the broadest and most inclusive award given by ESGR in recognition of significant achievement in promoting cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers.

Sergeant Luna also received the ESGR Patriot Award, which recognizes individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees.

Special recognitions also went to Donna Duncan for her long-time service as Founding Member and President of the Rio Hondo

Community Development Corporation, Daniel Goff as the 2016 Distinguished Senior of the Year and Robert Wayne as the 2015 Outgoing Senior of the Year.

Long-time resident Maria Pacheco Vargas was present with her family, celebrating her 100th birthday. El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero led the audience of more than 300 into singing “Happy Birthday,” as Vargas was joined on stage by her family.

Thirty awards in all were presented during the evening, many of which went to students for academic and athletic achievements, organizations for milestone anniversaries and volunteers throughout the community who dedicate time and resources to develop and maintain programs benefiting the City of El Monte.

Third through eighth grade students from throughout the Mountain View School District put their mental gaming talents to the test at the District’s 15th annual Chess Competition. Representing nine of the District’s 12 schools, 130 young chess strategists gathered at Madrid Middle School on Saturday, May 21 for the competition, excitedly showing off their chess playing skills.

The five match tournament was divided into three levels: beginning for players with one year of experience, intermediate for players with two to three years of experience and advanced for players with four or more years of experience. Intensity filled the air as students calculated their moves, strategized and maneuvered their pieces with the ultimate goal of checkmating their opponents’ King.

Several MVSD schools have Chess Clubs which meet regularly providing students the opportunity to learn the game of strategy and logic and perfect their skills. Research shows that playing chess has great benefits for kids including improving visual memory, attention span and spatialreasoning ability. Just like in school, in chess concentration and memory are key.

Playing chess also enhances reading and math skills because it requires decoding, thinking, comprehension and analysis and fosters logic, critical thinking and creativity.

“Chess is a fun game of strategy and challenges that anyone can learn to play,” said Donelle Soto, Baker School’s principal. “The focus, concentration, and sportsmanship the students displayed during today’s competition was amazing.

By playing chess they are not only developing their analytical and critical think-

ing skills, but are learning patience and good sportsmanship too,” she added.

As the battles on the chess boards unfolded and the students moved their bishops, knights, pawns, queens and kings, their sense of pride in their play was evident.

“We are very proud of all the students and commend them for their enthusiasm, good sportsmanship and exceptional chess playing abilities,” said Roberto Lopez, MVSD’s Director of Student Support Services and Special Education.

Clenching top honors in the beginners division in grades 3-5 was Eric Yan from Baker School and for grades 6-8, Vivian Le from Madrid Middle School. In the intermediate division for grades 3-5, Josh Phan from Parkview and for grades 6-8, Destiny Moreno from Maxson earned the top spots.

The winner in the advanced division for grades 3-8 was Kevin Wu from La Primaria.

“Congratulations go out to our winners and to all the participants,” said Soto. “It is inspirational to see the level at which these kids perform and the way they carry themselves. It is way beyond their years. Special thanks also go out to our school site chess coaches for their excellent support of our students including David Chen, Elena Brown, Kryztofer Garcia and Margaret Tanaka from Baker School, Belinda Hyde from Monte Vista School, Dolores Haro, from La Primaria School, Domingo Castillo and Maria Ramirez from Maxson School, Joseph Baldenebro from Miramonte School, Jason Guerrero from Madrid Middle School, Jose Sanchez and Cathy Spiess from Parkview School, Antonio Perez from Voorhis School and Ryan Smith and Arlene Legaspe from Kranz Intermediate School.

‘Time Jockey’ Gathering

San Gabriel ... The annual reunion of the San Gabriel Men’s Breakfast Club took place last week at the La Casa Community Center. Over 150 current and former residents of San Gabriel’s Mexican-American community met to recall memories of past days and events with old and new friends. Coordinated through the efforts of Danny Tovar, Ray and Richard Duran, the group met to renew acquaintances, listen to some music from the old days and view some pictures from yesteryear.

A group photo with approximately 70 individuals was taken to document the event and add to the collection of memorabilia from the local members. Speeches were given providing background on the club as well references to past times and the importance of remembering where everyone grew up and lived.

An old-time Latin Rock Band including members from the Premiers Band played some old songs from the 1950’s and 60’s and guests danced to many of the old pieces played.

Ruben Ochoa expertly sang the old favorite “Nite Owl” as a tribute to Tony Allen, also from San Gabriel, who originally wrote the song.

Ochoa also crooned the song “I Remember Linda” to the delight of the crowd in attendance. Family photographs were on display of old San Gabriel families and reprinted copies of the “El Chismoso” newspaper printed in 1952 were also on display for attendees to read about the old neighborhood. In addition, photographs, memorabilia and posters of the great bands, which played in San Gabriel, were on display including items from the Premiers, Monotones, Thee In Crowd and El Chicano. It was a different time and era living in San Gabriel back in the 1960’s but the reunion brought back all the good times and memories, and they’ll be even more memories for next year….

Border Dispute …. Recently, I’ve been examining and researching the boundary line between the City of Alhambra and the City of San Marino along Granada Ave. My first thought was that the east side of Granada Ave belonged to the City of San Marino while the west side belonged to the City of Alhambra. When

I inquired to the City of Alhambra, their response was that the location in question belonged to City of San Marino but failed to provide me with any clear evidence except to say someone in the city said it was so. However, when I inquired to the City of San Marino, their response was that it was actually in the City of Alhambra. Well, I know that the location could not be in both cities so I contacted the County of Los Angeles for an official clarification of the boundaries between the two cities. As the County of Los Angeles surveyed the entire San Gabriel Valley over 100 years ago before the incorporation of many of our local cities, I was hopeful they would have the definitive answer to my question. Thanks to the expert knowledge of Los Angeles County employees, the original tract property maps and even incorporation articles for the City of Alhambra were examined for boundary information.

The Alhambra Articles of Incorporation were drafted on July 6, 1903 and were approved on July 11th, making this year the 113th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Alhambra. On January 22, 1908, an election added an unincorporated area south of the City of South Pasadena to Alhambra boundaries and finally on November 5, 1917, the Granada Park area was annexed. While the research continues, I’ve run across some interesting historical documents which helps my research but border questions still remains unanswered….

San Gabriel Complex Fire Recap

Combined acreage for the San Gabriel Complex Fire remains the same at 5,339 acres ( 4,235 acres for the Fish Fire and 86% containment and 1,146 acres for the Reservoir Fire with 72% containment ) Los Angeles County Fire Department anticipates both fires will be at 100% containment by June 30, 2016.

481 personnel are currently engaged on these fires including 7 engines, 14 hand crews, 15 water tenders, 6 bulldozers, and 8 helicopters.

While firefighters make the final push towards

containment of the fire, they must fulfill another important task. Firefighters will be removing equipment in the field which is no longer needed and return items as suppression activities continue to wind down.

The list of equipment that must be retrieved includes; hose, pump kits; generators; chainsaw kits; collapsible water tanks; and smaller items as hose fittings and nozzles.

cause of the Reservoir Fire was due to a vehicle crash with a fatality while the cause of the Fish Fire is still under investigation. The fires were burning in fuel that was 7-10 years old with a 6-8 foot chaparral and large grass crop. The Reservoir Fire grew the first day to 1200 acres. The Fish Fire grew to 3700 acres and threatened homes. Initial concerns were that the two fires would merge into one fire. Fire crews established

San Gabriel Celebrate 4th of July with Parade and Kids’ Day picnic

The City of San Gabriel will celebrate Independence Day with the annual 4th of July Parade and Kids’ Day picnic on Monday, July 4.

Both the parade and the picnic are free to attend and open to the entire community. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. (a new time from last year) at Plaza Park, 428 S Mission Drive, then head north on Mission and east on Broadway to end at Smith Park, 232 W Broadway Ave. The city will accept parade entries on the day of the parade at 8 a.m. at Plaza Park. Community groups and residents who participate in the parade will be awarded prizes for most patriotic decorations and

Following the parade, community members can enjoy the Kids’ Day picnic at Smith Park, featuring a free barbecue lunch, entertainment provided by San Gabriel Library, free recreational swim at Smith Park Pool from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., summer activities including a watermelon eating contest and picnic games, and fun booths and activities sponsored by community organizations. New this year, there will also be a live band on stage playing music for picnic attendees to enjoy.

At the picnic, the city will display the Honor Wall, which includes the names of current and former members of the military that are from San Gabriel.

Golden Apple Award continued from page 1

Kaleidoscope program Rosanna and her daughter organized Saturday Soccer Clinics at Twin Lakes for students and families. Over 60 church volunteers lead the Saturday clinics providing students and families with soccer instruction, fun games and a free lunch as well as an outpouring of love and appreciation.

Rosanna’s compassion and care is evident in everything she does. Her most gratifying work has been her work with families who were homeless and now are off the streets. Her greatest reward was when a former kindergarten student and her family came to visit. They

had been living in a car when the little girl was in Rosanna’s class and needed help. Today they have a home and her student has recently graduated from Cal Poly.

“No reward is greater than to see a student succeed and reach their full potential,” said Rosanna. “I feel blessed to have so many resources available through my church and others and it means the world to me to be able to help the families of Mountain View who I care so deeply for.”

MVSD administrators and board members joined in the ACSA Golden Apple Awards ceremony and were

thrilled to be there to honor Rosanna.

“Rosanna is an exceptional teacher and human being and we truly appreciate her kind outreach and her dedication to ensure our students and families have what they need to succeed.

She is an inspiration and very deserving of the Golden Apple award,” said Lillian Maldonado French, MVSD Superintendent.

During the ceremony ACSA Region XV also honored retiring administrators and MVSD was pleased to honor Maureen O’Hearn who is retiring after dedicating 38 years to the Mountain View School District.

Celebrate the USA at Sierra Madre’s 4th of July Parade

Looking for a hometown Americana celebration of our country’s birthday?

Then grab your lawn chair and family and friends and don’t miss the city of Sierra Madre’s annual 4th of July parade!

Beginning at 10am, the parade begins at Sunnyside and proceeds east along Sierra Madre Boulevard, ending at Sierra Vista Park.

Featured are entries from local groups including charitable organizations, scout troops, sports teams, schools and even the Sierra Madre City College Marching Turkey Band. Classic vehicles are always popular and past participants have included high wheel bicycles, John Deere tractors, DeLoreans, and Shriner mini cars. The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association’s entry will display artist Richard Burrow’s concept for their 2017 Rose Parade float entitled “The Cat’s Away.” The Rose Float Association will be fundraising by selling fresh red roses for $1 each to the crowd.

Would you rather create your own program or build on someone else’s?

Some of you may, or may not, remember an old college basketball coach named Gene Bartow but he’s an interesting example to this question.

Bartow was a successful NCAA men’s basketball coach from 1961 to 1975.

He estab-lished programs at Central Missouri State, Valparaiso, and Memphis State before mov-ing to the University of Illinois for the 1974-1975 season.

In one year as the Fighting Illini’s head coach, he went 8-18 and in an effort to resusci-tate the program he became the first coach in school history to reach out and recruit Af-ricanAmericans from inner-city Chicago.

The platform was set for a long, successful, run but then John Wooden retired.

The Wizard of Westwood retired after leading UCLA to its tenth NCAA title in twelve years and the school went looking for a replacement. They found one in Bartow and brought him in to lead the Bruins.

Bartow went 28-4 in his first season and reached the semifinals before UCLA fell to eventual champion Indiana. (The Hoosiers went undefeated and are still considered one of the greatest teams in NCAA history) In Bartow’s second season the Bruins reached the Sweet 16 and finished with a 24-5 record. In two seasons his combined record was 529, 24-4 in league with two PAC 8 titles.

The response to this wasn’t a new contract or an endorsement but pressure from the alumni base strong enough to cause him to walk away.

“UCLA is a great place,” Bartow said to me when I interviewed him in the fall of 2000. “All you have to do is win.”

Of course, the winning wasn’t defined by a good won-loss record but championships. Anything less than UCLA winning its eleventh and twelfth national titles was never going to be enough. And even if he did win those titles he would have remained under the shadow of Wooden.

So on June 14, 1977, Bartow resigned and went to the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) and started its basketball program from scratch. In twelve seasons as the Blazers coach he never had a losing season, won

over 20-games eight times, made the NCAA tournament eight times, the NIT three times, and missed the postseason just once.

So the question is… again…would you rather start a program or follow in someone else’s footsteps in the program they’ve already established?

Need an example? Bill Walsh won three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers. His replacement George Seifert won two… but does anyone ever mention Seifert? In fact Seifert with two Super Bowl titles is not in the Hall of Fame while Tony Dungy and John Madden are in after winning only one Super Bowl.

Does anyone respect what Seifert accomplished or is he lost in the shadows of 49ers tradition?

Former Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders head coach Tom Flores has two Super Bowl championships as well…but he’s not in the Hall of Fame. His predecessor, Madden, is…Does anyone respect what Flores accomplished?

How about an example closer to home?

Former Monrovia football coach Ryan Maddox won three CIF titles and was replaced by Chris Stevens.

Stevens lasted two years and went a combined 18-6, made the playoffs and won a Rio Hondo League championship…but was anything less than a title going to keep him from getting squeezed?

And even if he won a title, or two, would he ever be out of the shadow of Maddox?

I’ve asked the question twice…Would you rather start something from scratch or sign on to an established program that consistently wins titles?

My answer would be this…If I had a choice of going to Bishop Amat or Mark Keppel, which hasn’t won a league game since 1999, to coach football…I’d go to Keppel.

Saturday, June 18 was trainer Jerry Hollendorfer’s 70th birthday. His undefeated three-year-old filly Songbird gave him the best gift he could gotten that day, bringing home her eighth straight victory.

The weather at Santa Anita matched the name of the

stakes race- the Summertime Oaks. Despite temperatures in the low 90s, Songbird and jockey Mike Smith handily won.

Songbird entered the race as the 1 to 9 favorite, with almost $1 million wagered on her in the Show category alone. Songbird and Smith

broke fast, accompanied by Bellamentary and jockey Martin Garcia. As they entered the backside, Smith was content to let Bellamentary take the lead, settling Songbird in a close second.

Near the far turn, Songbird and Smith made their move and Songbird needed no encouragement to beat the rest of the field by 6 ½ lengths.

The champion filly was greeted in the Winner’s Circle by a cheering crowd of all ages, including school kids on summer break who’d come with their parents and grandparents to see Songbird’s return to racing.

After her victory in the Santa Anita Oaks, Hollendorfer and Songbird’s owner Rick Porter had entered her in May 6’s Kentucky Oaks, the female equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. UnforSongbird continued on page 15

Doesn’t Andrew Tovar seem like he’s been at Cathedral for ten years? Some players just seem to have that effect on you. When you’re the face of the team and throw for over 3,700 yards and 47 touchdowns like Tovar did last year, it gives the impression you’ve been there awhile.

Same thing with Steven Comstock at Northview.

“Yeah, I get that sometimes. People tell me it seems like he’s been here forever,” said Northview Head Coach Marcel Perez.

Comstock started as a freshman and by the time his Viking career is over he will have been a four year starter and will probably be the leader in every passing category in Northview history. Comstock, who threw for 2,698 yards and 31 touchdowns as a sophomore has already received offers from Idaho, Eastern Washington and Oregon State with more expected to come.

“Yeah, once one comes in they all start coming,” Perez said.

Antwaun Ayers is another weapon for the Vikings. He had over 800 yards receiving last year and just got an offer from Fresno State.

Northview went 10-2 overall last year and has most of its key players coming back. The Vikes also landed running back Kevin Thomas, who transferred in from West Covina and could have their sights set on a CIF title run.

That being said Northview has its work cut out for them. With the CIF realignment now in place, the Vikes are no longer in the Mid-Valley Division. They now reside in Division 8, where they will still contend with San Dimas but also the likes of Burbank, Burroughs and Don Lugo.

Northview looks better in 2016 but it needs to be.

Speaking of Don Lugo I almost forgot, Greg Gano has taken over as head coach. He was out Saturday in full force at the Bonita Air Assault leading the Conquistadores. Don Lugo went 6-6 overall last season but did knock off Bonita in the first round of the Central Division playoffs.

Gano, who came over after a couple of tough years at Wilson, could be the one to take Don Lugo to the next level.

That’s a division to keep an eye on.

Charter Oak, who always seems to do well in the passing circuit took third beating Damien in the consolation game. The Chargers, who fell to San Marino last year in the CIF Central Division Final has a new challenge this year as well. They move up to Division 4 where they will lock horns with Glendora, Downey and Sierra Canyon. And if they’re really lucky they might get to take a road trip out to Lompoc. Nobody gets a free pass this year.

Example being schools in the mid-west start their football schedule by the second week of August. This was to make sure the regular season schedule and the playoffs were completed before the winter weather began.

But what was once fine for the mid-west will soon become routine in the CIF-Southern Section. The CIF-SS office released the new plan set to begin in the 2018-2019 season.

Football Coming in 2018 all Zero

Week games will be played on August 17. Week One for August 24 and all regular season games will be completed by October 26. Playoffs will be the first three weeks of November and championship games will be played on Thanksgiving weekend.

One thing to think about concerning teams playing Zero Week games. The early start means players will be putting on helmet and pads at the end of July.

Girls Volleyball For the 2018 season, the first contest is scheduled for August 13, and the last regular season contest will be played on October 17.

Section finals will be played the first week of November.

Boys/Girls Basketball Basketball season, which traditionally began the first

week of December, will open its regular season on November 12, 2018, and play its last contest on February 1, 2019. The championships will be played at the end of February.

CIF State Boys/Girls championships will be a two-week tournament that will conclude on March 8 & 9 of 2019.

Boys Wrestling First contest will be November 12 and the last dual meet will be held on January 22, 2019.

Boys/Girls Soccer First contest will be November 12 and will conclude on January 31, 2019.

Section championships will be played the third week of February.

Boys Team Tennis Boys Tennis will begin Monday, February 11, 2019.

The regular season will conclude on April 26. Sections championships will be played on May 11.

Track & Field Starts February 16, 2019 Concludes on April 26, 2019 Section Championships will be on May 11

Area All-CIF Selections: Baseball & Softball 2016

Many publications and media outlets have their own selections but the one that, generally, counts most is being named All-CIF. It’s a small group. Of the twenty schools that we followed during the Spring athletic season only four boys and three girls were named to the CIF teams.

Baseball Division 3: La Salle: Zane Lindeman

The Lancers went 20-8 in this season thanks in large part to this supersophomore. Lindeman, a right-hander, recorded a 9-1 record to go along with a 1.30 earned run average. He fanned 49, walked just 19 and surrendered 69 hits in 75.2 innings of work.

Division 5: Monrovia: Isaiah Ramos This Wildcat senior southpaw appeared in 17 games as a pitcher, started twelve, finished three, fired two shutouts, one no-hitter and collected three saves on his way to an 8-3 record. That totaled up to 74.2 innings of work, 87 strikeouts, and just 46 hits (just three extra-base hits all season) and ERA of 1.03…All that was when he was on

the mound but in the batter’s box, he hit .384 with a teamleading 28 including six doubles.

Some of them are looking for an update on their benefits claim, many after having waited for more than 6 months. Others are trying to get an appointment to see a doctor, and still others are looking for information on going back to school. Finally, many of our veterans come to my office seeking assistance to retrieve old medals that were either lost or stolen. Helping each of our veterans find the answers to these questions and others is why we put together this forum today. I was so pleased with the success of today’s event and I look forward to doing more to get our veterans the care and support they deserve.”

It’s been just a couple weeks since the 1st United Methodist Church had a wonderful car and craft show. The church is located on Tyler Ave, right next to the Masonic Lodge. About a month ago Masonic Lodge had a BBQ Pit event, which was quite delightful and delicious.

So many different family events are happening in our neighborhood in the City of El Monte, we can’t keep up.

We will try and keep you informed as best as we can through the newspaper and our social media.

This was the church’s fundraising event to help with some of the needs of the church. They had a talented young Taekwondo Club from the City of El Monte that performed some amazing stunts. They performed some of their moves to Star War theme songs, and they even looked the part, because the main students were dressed as a young Luke Skywalker and Darth Maul. The supporting cast was dressed in all white, which resembled storm troopers. This routine was very thrilling to watch.

There were several booths that had handmade crafts, Tupperware, and cleaning products that were meant for everyone. “Posh” products, names that just make you smile or laugh. All of the ingredients are all natural,

The car show featured some very modern cars along with a few vintage cars, which had been restored. Mid Valley News and Mid Valley Radio had a chance to talk to a couple of the owners of the cars.

Johnny and Johnny, who both owned custom painted Chevy Impalas. Both Johnny’s were from the car club “New Life.” This club began years ago, with the passion for cars and friendship. Both cars had custom paint jobs with detailed pin stripping. One of the cars had a very special flake painted top, which changed colors when the sunlight hit it. It was amazing to see these cars that were restored to their original state but with that special personal touch. Another highlight of the show was red and white ’57 Chevy. To round out the show, there was a custom Lincoln that was decked out in its Raider colors and a special Raider logo that had a custom skull in it. There were several other cars and custom bicycles as well at the show.

Anybody that knows games and gaming systems knows what E3 is but if you don’t, it’s the Electronic Entertainment Expo, a convention for people who work in the gaming industry. It is also where the major companies announce much of their big releases for the coming year. Mid Valley News and

If you’re into gaming on a console or online you’ll recognize some of these names, such as Electronic Art (EA), Bethesda, UBIsoft, Microsoft, PlayStation, Nintendo, 2K, AlienWare, Monster and the list goes on.

One of the biggest hits seemed to be the virtual reality games. This is when

you put on a special headset, i.e. Samsung’s Oculus Rift and use the controller on a console and you’re emerged into the game, instead of just watching on a flat screen television. PlayStation had

demos as well.

Dorito’s was a big sponsor and they setup an outdoor arcade. You enter the tented area and there were arcaded games where water, a variety of Dorito’s and a special delight was the chili cheese nachos Dorito’s and free t-shirts. Dorito’s had an upstairs lounge and game demo, too. What made this area more exciting was you got to play Madden 2016 on the mega screen using regular controllers from a Xbox one or PlayStation.

This experience could not be duplicated at any ones house because the size of the screen and the surround sound system attached.

Down below in the courtyard area, they had a football throwing challenge as well.

PlayStation dominated this year’s E3. They introduced many great new games.

God of War is back and this time he is an old man.

Kratos has aged, married and has a son. This God of War takes us into being a father. It has a nice cross

between Last of Us and God of War. The gameplay looks the same and expect some new enemies for Kratos to fight. Another great game is Days Gone, a zombie game that took the zombies from the movie World War Z and made a game. The last game that was most exciting was Horizon Zero Dawn.

The game is about a world that has been destroyed and transformed by robotic animals. Humans have been pushed back to the Stone Age and are hunters of robotic animals.

their virtual reality. PlayStation VR doesn’t need a new console to work. It runs on the PlayStation 4 and all you need is the headset. There are 3 types of ways to play it. You can sit down with the headset and use the controller for interaction. You can also stand up and use the PlayStation Eye Camera and these wand like controls to actually be more immersive in the game. The final way is to use the gun accessory that PlayStation offers but only will work with shooter games.

High Dynamic Range Televisions

Keep hydrated and drink plenty of water during this hot summer heat wave

You probably heard the term HDR for photos before.

High Dynamic Range is basically the process of taking an over exposed photo and a under exposed photo and combining them to give you a very blue sky and very green grass. Normally, a photo with normal exposure will have the sky washed out for being too bright. These feature became very popular when Apple introduced it on their iPhone, about 5 years ago. Since then all cameras have added the feature and now it’s the newest feature on televisions.

HDR is now being implemented in film, television, and games. The process is still the same in film, but now they basically have the video camera take two shots instead of one. They can also do that process in post-production. Films were always able to produce HDR since they are recorded in raw and are color corrected frame by frame. The problem producing HDR was that televisions and projectors didn’t have the capability.

Now all television brands

are making HDR the new feature to add to their televisions. But it’s not going to be cheap. The only TVs that will carry this feature are 4k TVs. Now 4k TVs have dropped in price but are still very expensive. This means a new 4k TV with HDR is going to cost more than one thousand dollars. HDR will bring more contrast, color, and sharpness to your TVs. Games have also started using this new feature, but only the new consoles will have it. So you’re going to have to buy a lot of new things just to be able to have this feature. If you were planning on buying a 4k TV then just remember to get one with HDR. If you’re not planning to buy a TV any-

time soon then wait. HDR is popular now but will it fade

in time like curved displays and 3D.

Galaxy, Colorado, Draw Blanks

The Los Angeles Galaxy and Colorado Rapids battled to a 0-0 tie Wednesday night before 21,884 at StubHub Center. It was the seventh draw of the season for LA. Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe kept the Rapids in check early making a great stop on Colorado’s Marlon Hairston who was on a breakaway in the 31st minute.

Rowe made another nice grab near the end of the half to keep Colorado at bay. The Rapids had three shots on goal compared to just one for the Galaxy in the first half.

In the second half, the Galaxy’s Jack McBean missed an opportunity as he fired one high over the crossbar in the 49th minute.

Rowe made another fine save on a blast from Colorado in the 60th minute.

Steven Gerrard replaced Baggio Husidic in the 61st minute. Giovani dos Santos had a shot off of a cross but booted it up and over into the stands in the 64th.

Six seasons later, and “The Walking Dead” has gone through deaths, murders, changes in character morale and a lot of zombies, also known as “walkers.”

The undead, however, is ready to chase you down this summer at Universal Studios Hollywood! In place of the Universal House of Horrors walk-through maze, the attraction will be another exciting and horrifying maze for park goers.

Greg Nicotero, creator of the series, details that, “It’s very exciting to be able to make the attraction as 100 percent authentic as possible.” KNB Efx’s special-effect makeup, who also does the makeup on the show, will make the walkers in the park as realistic as possible. The team has been working painstakingly to recreate every excruciating detail in the maze, so that it feels like you are running for your life: postapocalypse style. So put on your sheriff’s hat, salute the “Ricktatorship” and make

At the height of the fire, 1376 homes were evacuated.

The American Red Cross established an Evacuation Center at Duarte Community Center, 1600 Huntington Drive, and 1460 staff from multiple local, state and federal agencies worked to protect property and suppress the fire. Road closures were in place and law enforcement patrolled for security while firefighters worked through the night to contain the fire. Los Angeles County Fire Department held a community meeting in Duarte at Northview Intermediate School on June 22nd to answer questions and assure residents of the commitment of staff to this community.

Highway 39 remains closed at old San Gabriel Road due to ongoing fire activity, hazards remaining on the road including falling debris and crews performing mop up and patrol operations. All evacuations for the San Gabriel Complex have been lifted. The American Red Cross center has been closed.

3. Subdivisions. Subdivisions pursuant to the Subdivision Map Act (Gov. Code, § 66410 et seq.) or Title 16 (Subdivisions) of the El Monte Municipal Code, unless the El Monte Planning Commission and/orCity Council has issued a discretionary approval for the subdivision that is valid and unexpired, prior to June 21,2016, or the City’s Building Division has issued a permit for such addition, prior to June 21, 2016.

WHEREAS, pursuant to California Constitution Article XI, Section 7, the City of El Monte (the “City”) has the authority to enact local planning and land use regulations to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of their residents through its police power; and WHEREAS, the City’s police power provides the right to adopt and enforce zoning regulations; and WHEREAS, the northwest portion of the City contains a high concentration of lands which have been developed, improved and used for industrial, manufacturing and warehouse uses over the course of more than 50 years; and WHEREAS, over the past two (2) years, there has been a significant influx of new development throughout the City and several larger properties are being marketed for future development in the Moratorium Area; and WHEREAS, since the Moratorium Area is bounded by residential neighborhoods on all sides, any future development activity must be undertaken in a manner which ensures that environment investigation and remediation work and large scale demolition and site grading work are done in a manner which mitigates potential adverse environmental effects to nearby properties; and WHEREAS, pursuant to California Government Code Section 65858(a), the City Council adopted Urgency Ordinance No. 2882 on May 17, 2016, relating to certain applications for development projects in the northwest portion of the City; and WHEREAS, such moratorium specifically applies to all properties zoned M-1 (Light Manufacturing) and M-2 (General Manufacturing) within an area bounded by the railroad to the south, Temple City Boulevard/Ellis Lane to the west, Lower Azusa Avenue to the north and Arden Drive to the east (the “Moratorium Area”, see Exhibit “A” – Map of Moratorium Area); and WHEREAS, under Government Code Section 65868(a), Urgency Ordinance No. 2882 expires within forty-five (45) days of adoption (July 1, 2016), but allows the City to extend the moratorium for an additional period of ten (10) months and fifteen (15) days; and WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to extend the existing moratorium established under Urgency Ordinance No. 2882, from the July 1, 2016, initial expiration date, for a period of ten (10) months and fifteen (15) days because any future development in the area must be carefully planned to address impacts to surrounding properties and be consistent with the City’s General Plan; and WHEREAS, the City Council public hearing for consideration of this item was noticed in accordance with the requirements set forth in Government Code sections 65090.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL MONTE, CALIFORNIA DOES HEREBY ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Recitals. The recitals above are true and correct and incorporated herein by reference.

SECTION 2. Definitions.

A. “Development Project” shall have the same meaning as set forth in Government Code Section 65928.

B. “Development Project Permit” shall mean and refer to any of the administrative regulatory permit for construction or reconstruction of a Project. The words Development Project Permit do not include any ministerial project proposed to be carried out or approved by the City.

C. “Project” shall have the same meaning as set forth in Government Code Section 65931.

SECTION 3. Moratorium.

A. In accordance with Government Code Section 65858, the following activities shall be unlawful for the duration of this moratorium within the Moratorium Area as defined in the recitals above: 1. New Construction. a. New construction on property of any building(s) greater than twenty-five thousand (25,000) square feet, unless the El Monte Planning Commission and/or City Council has issued a discretionary approval that is valid and unexpired, prior to June 21, 2016, or the City’s Building Division has issued a permit for such construction prior to June 21, 2016 which is still in effect. b. The City reserves the right to allow new construction on property, of any building (or combination of buildings) twenty-five thousand(25000)square feet, or less subject to appropriate conditions of the City for theprotection of the public health and safety, if a suitably detailed written report describing site investigations for the detection of old but unclosed water wells, monitoring wells, underground storage tanks,abandoned or unused sanitary sewer or industrial waste water sewer system or other similar underground facility is delivered by the applicant to the City in a form reasonably acceptable to the City.

2. Additions. a. Additions to building(s) in excess of fifteen thousand(15,000)suqare feet, unless the El Monte Planning Commission and/or City Council has issued a discretionary approval for such addition that is valid and unexpired, prior to June 21, 2016, or the City’s Building Division has issued a permit for such addition, prior to June 21, 2016. b. The City reserves the right to allow additions to a building(s) fifteen thousand (15000) square feet or less subject to appropriate conditions of the City for the protection of the public health and safety, if a suitably detailed written report describing site investigations for the detection of old but unclosed water wells,monitoring wells, underground storage tanks, abandoned or unusedsanitary sewer or industrial waste water sewer system or other similar underground facility is delivered by the applicant to the City in a form reasonably acceptable to the City.

4.Construction/Additions/Building Occupancy. construction, additions, or building occupancy on properties with a facility initiated cleanup or any local, state, or federally mandated cleanup or remediation, unless such activities have been confirmed by the City to be consistent with the completion of such clean-up and are reasonably acceptable to the applicable agency overseeing such cleanup or remediation, subject such other health and safety condtions as may be reasonably requested by the City.

5. Demolition. Demolition unless (A)(i) the demolition work is associated with a facility initiated cleanup or remediation or any local, state, or federally mandated cleanup or remediation, and (ii) a Phase I Report, a Phase II Report, and as applicable, a suitably detailed written description of the means and methods of the proposed work of environmental remediation work included in such demolition work is delivered by the applicant to the City with the demolition permit application and such report is acceptable to the City; or (B)(i) the demolition work affects less than 15,000 sq. feet of building area and (ii) a Phase I Report is delivered by the applicant to the City which confirms that no hazardous substances shall be generated as part of such demolition work subject to such other health and safety conditions, as may be reasonably requested by the City.

6. Reoccupancy. Reoccupancy of any building completed prior to January 1, 2003, which has been vacant for twelve (12) or more consecutive months prior to application for reoccupancy unless: (i) a Phase I Report, a Phase II Report and a suitably detailed written description of the means and methods of the proposed

work of environmental remediation is delivered by the applicant to the City with the reoccupancy permit application, and such reports are acceptable to the City; and (ii) written confirmation from a qualified expert addressed to the City stating either that no indoor air testing is required or that specific life safety protection measures shall be undertaken as part of the proposed reoccupancy which shall appropriately mitigate human exposure to harmful substances resulting from the occupancy of such building for soil vapor intrusion is delivered by the applicant to the City, subject to such other health and safety conditions, as may be reasonably requested by the City.

TO ALL INTERESTED PERSONS: 1. Petitioner: Farima Human filed a petition with this court for a decree changing names as follows:

SECTION 4.Purpose and Findings.

B. The City Council seeks to conduct a thorough review of existing default regulations of the City as applicable to the Moratorium Area in light of present day conditions which affect the demolition, environmental remediation and reuse of the lands within the Moratorium Area, consistent with the goals and policies of City’s General Plan.

C. Until the City is able to implement procedures and regulations that ensure development within the Moratorium Area is conducted in a safe and orderly manner that complies with federal, State and local regulations, there exists a current and immediate threat of harm to the public health, safety and welfare.

D. Such a threat to public health, safety and welfare will be mitigated with the adoption of this Urgency Ordinance which prohibits the approval of new Development Projects and Development Project Permits for lands within the Moratorium Area until such time as reasonable procedures and regulations of the City can be put in place.

SECTION 5. Exemptions.

A. This Urgency Ordinance shall not apply to any work of repair, preservation or rehabilitation of an existing structure or existing improvement on any of the lands in the Moratorium Area.

B. This Urgency Ordinance shall not apply to or affect any Development Project or application for the issuance of any Development Project Permit or building or demolition permit for any lands in the Moratorium Area which as of the effective date of this Urgency Ordinance has received final land use approval from the City Council, or final land use approval by the Planning Commission from which no timely appeal to the City Council has been filed.

C. This Urgency Ordinance shall not apply to or effect any construction, improvement or use of land in the Moratorium Area for which a vested right for development and/or use has been acquired and perfected pursuant to state law prior to the adoption of this Urgency Ordinance.

D. This Urgency Ordinance shall not apply to or affect any public agency which is disposing public property of less than 80,000 sq. feet of land area as surplus to a public project or to a former public use dedication, nor shall this Urgency Ordinance apply to any purchaser of such property, or the successors or assigns in interest of such purchaser; provided that such property has first been cleared of all structures and improvements by the public agency prior to the disposition of such property.

SECTION 6. Hardship Exemption.

URGENCY ORDINANCE NO. 2887

AN INTERIM URGENCY ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL MONTE ESTABLISHING A TEMPORARY MORATORIUM ON THE APPROVAL OF APPLICATIONS FOR CERTAIN DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES WITHIN R-1B (ONE-FAMILY DWELLING) AND R-1C (ONE-FAMILY DWELLING) ZONED PROPERTIES WITHIN THE CITY’S RURBAN HOMESTEAD OVERLAY DISTRICT, PURSUANT TO GOVERNMENT CODE SECTION 65858 WHEREAS, pursuant to California Constitution Article XI, Section 7, the City of El Monte (the “City”) has the authority to enact local planning and land use regulations to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of their residents through its police power; and WHEREAS, the City’s police power provides the right to adopt and enforce zoning regulations; and WHEREAS, the City’s Rurban Homestead Overlay District (“RHOD”) encompasses an area of the City comprised of structures with both cultural and historical significance for the City, as specifically identified in its General Plan; and WHEREAS, the moratorium specifically applies to properties zoned R-1B (OneFamily Dwelling) and R-1C (One-Family Dwelling) and located within the RHOD Overlay in the northeast portion of the City (the “Moratorium Area”, see Exhibit “A” – Map of Moratorium Area); and WHEREAS, the City Council seeks to temporarily prohibit certain development activities that threaten the viability of the treasured cultural and historical character of the RHOD; and WHEREAS, California Government Code Section 65858 authorizes the City Council to adopt an interim urgency ordinance for the immediate preservation of the public health, safety, or welfare, and to prohibit a land use that is in conflict with a contemplated general plan, specific plan, or zoning proposal that the City Council, Planning Commission, or Economic Development Department is considering or studying or intends to study within a reasonable time; and WHEREAS, the City Council public hearing for consideration of this item was noticed in accordance with the requirements set forth in Government Code sections 65090.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL MONTE, CALIFORNIA DOES HEREBY ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Recitals. The recitals above are true and correct and incorporated herein by reference.

A. The City Council has the authority but no obligation to grant exemptions or modifications to the application of the provisions of this Urgency Ordinance to specific conditions on property where it finds that adherence to the moratorium would result in extreme hardship to either the applicant or property owner. The City Council may consider any factor relevant to this determination. A finding that the effect of the moratorium is the principal cause of the deprivation of the applicant of all economically viable use of the property, separate and apart from the presence of hazardous substances or such property, shall constitute extreme hardship.

SECTION 2. Moratorium.

B. Written requests for hardship exemptions shall be filed with the Economic Development Department and shall state the grounds for the exemption and provide supporting documentation. The City Council is not required to consider the request any sooner than thirty (30) days after such request has been submitted to the City. The City Council shall approve, approve with conditions, or deny each such request by resolution.

2. Additions. SECTION 7. No Regulatory Taking of any Interest in Property.

Nothing in this Urgency Ordinance shall be interpreted to affect an unconstitutional taking of the property of any person. If the City Council determines based upon specific evidence in the record, that the application of one or more provisions of this Urgency Ordinance to a proposed Development Project would affect an unconstitutional taking of private property, the City Council shall disregard such provisions to the extent necessary to avoid such unconstitutional taking.

SECTION 8. CEQA. This Urgency Ordinance is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”) based on the following findings: A. This Urgency Ordinance is not a “project” within the meaning of Section 15061(b)(3) of the CEQA Guidelines as it has no potential for resulting in a physical change in the environment, either directly or indirectly.

B. This Urgency Ordinance is not subject to CEQA under the general rule set forth in Section 15601(b)(3) of the CEQA Guidelines that CEQA only applies to projects which have the potential for causing a significant effect on the environment. For the reasons set forth in subparagraph (1), above, it can be seen with certainty that there is no possibility that this Urgency Ordinance will have a significant effect on the environment.

SECTION 9. Severability. If any section, subsection, subdivision, paragraph, sentence, clause or phrase of this Urgency Ordinance, or any part thereof is for any reason held to be invalid or unconstitutional by a decision of any court of competent jurisdiction, such decision shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this Urgency Ordinance or any part thereof. The City Council hereby declares that it would have passed each section, subsection, subdivision, paragraph, sentence, clause or phrase thereof, irrespective of the fact that any one or more section, subsection, subdivision, paragraph, sentence, clause or phrase would be subsequently declared invalid or unconstitutional.

SECTION 10. Effective Date. This Urgency Ordinance shall become effective immediately upon adoption, if adopted by at least four-fifths (4/5) vote of the City Council, and shall be in effect for a period of ten (10) months and fifteen (15) days from the end of the initial 45-day moratorium period established under Urgency Ordinance No. 2882 through May 17, 2017, unless extended by the City Council as provided for in the Government Code 65858.

5. New Dwellings on Properties. B. For so long as this Urgency Ordinance shall remain in effect, the City shall not approve or adopt any zoning amendment or General Plan amendment requested by an applicant or owner of any of the lands within the Moratorium Area.

SECTION 3. Findings and Purpose. This Urgency Ordinance is adopted as an urgency measure pursuant to Government Code Section 65858 and is for the immediate preservation of the public health, safety, and welfare. This Urgency Ordinance is deemed necessary based upon the recitals set forth above and for the following reasons: A. The City’s RHOD encompasses an area of the City comprised of structures with both cultural and historical significance for the City, as identified in the General Plan’s Housing Element and Cultural Resources Element, due to its unique architecture dating back to the early 20th century and equestrian and agricultural heritage.

B. Certain new development activities threaten the ongoing viability and unique cultural and historical character of the RHOD. C. The temporary prohibition of certain development activities in the City’s RHOD will preserve the cultural and historical character of this district while allowing City staff to study such development activities in order to develop permanent regulations and standards that will foster development growth while maintaining the unique character of this region.

SECTION 4. Exemptions.

C. This Urgency Ordinance shall not apply to or effect any construction, improvement or use of land in the Moratorium Area for which a vested right for development and/or use has been acquired and perfected pursuant to state law prior to the adoption of this Urgency Ordinance SECTION 5. Hardship Exemption.

A. The City Council has the authority but no obligation to grant exemptions from the provisions of this Urgency Ordinance where it finds that strict adherence to the moratorium would result in extreme hardship to either the developer or property owner. The City Council may consider any factor relevant to this determination. A finding that the moratorium deprives the owner of all economically viable use of the property shall constitute extreme hardship.

B. Written requests for hardship exemptions shall be filed with the Economic Development Department and shall state the grounds for the exemption and provide supporting documentation. The City Council is not required to consider the request any sooner than thirty (30) days after such request has been submitted to the City. Softball Division 4: Maranatha: Michelle Lieng As a hitter, the senior Lieng hit .539 with five home runs and 31 RBIs. She also collected 10 doubles, three triples, and was a perfect 14 for 14 on stolen bases…Then as a pitcher from the circle, she hurled 112.2 innings in 20 appearances, 17 as a starter.

She completed 12, threw a shutout, and earned a save with an ERA of 2.49. Her final record was 10-7.

South El Monte: Alyssa Diaz The senior Diaz’s bat was like a lightning bolt in 2016.

She hit .643 over the course of 19 games. Slammed six home runs, eight doubles, six triples, and drove in 26 runs on 36 total hits. In 70 plate appearances, she did not strikeout once…In four varsity seasons, Diaz batted .468 with 14 home runs and 78 RBIs. Her onbase-percentage of .539 was aided by her 117 hits and 36 walks. Finally, in 295 plate appearances, Diaz struck out only nine times. Six of those coming in her freshman year.

Division 5: San Gabriel: Marissa Cordova Cordova, just a junior, played in 26 games and batted .514 with two home runs and 23 runs batted in.

Her 37 total hits also included nine doubles and a triple to raise her OBP (on-basepercentage) to .552 on the season. On the base paths, she was a perfect nine for nine in thefts.
