Alhambra/San Gabriel Valley and Duarte Elks Clubs Present Free Dictionaries to Mt. View School District

Every third grade student in the Mountain View School District was presented with a free dictionary thanks to the Alhambra/San Gabriel Elks Club and the Duarte Elks Club, who distributed over 700 dictionaries to the third graders at all the district’s 10 elementary schools.

The two local Elks clubs gave away over 4,000 dictionaries to San Gabriel Valley third graders this year as part of The Dictionary Project. Since its implementation, The Dictionary Project has put over 21 mil-

City of Duarte Vaccination Clinic

In cooperation with VET CARE, the Duarte Public Safety Office will provide a low cost Vaccination Clinic on Saturday, June 25 from 8:00-10:00 a.m. The clinic will be held at Duarte Park, 1344 Bloomdale Street, adjacent to the Duarte Teen Center. Rabies vaccinations will be available for $8.00 each, microchip registration will be available for $40, and other vaccinations will be available upon request.

Attendees will also be able to purchase Duarte dog licenses, which need to be renewed annually on July 1st. Dog licensing fees are as follows: one year, unaltered $48 and one year,

spayed/neutered $25. Senior citizens, 65 years and older, are eligible for one free dog license provided the pet is spayed or neutered. A $50 late penalty fee will be added to the cost, if the license is purchased after August 31st. Dog licenses may also be purchased at Duarte City Hall, 1600 Huntington Drive, or at the Public Safety Office during business hours Monday, 1042 Huntington Drive during business hours Monday –Thursday 7:30 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.

by Mavis Hansen The official start of summer, this year, was on Monday, June 20th. Time to bring out those swim suits and look for cool things to do. The City of El Monte celebrated the first day of summer with a family-friendly community celebration at Arceo Park. At the healthy summer kick-off, a free nutritious lunch was served to children 18 years of age and under. From June 20th through July 22nd, El Monte Parks will host various summer activities from Monday through Friday which will include sports, games, arts & crafts and trips. During this period there will be free lunches provided from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at Arceo Park, 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at Mt. View Park, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Zamora Park, Gibson Mariposa Park and Lambert Park. The community is also encouraged to use the many recreational swimming activities at the El Monte Aquatic Center, 11001 Mildred Street.

The Tea and Chat Reading Society met for their monthly meeting and book discussion, on Friday, June 17th at the Ajos Y Cebollas Mexican Restaurant, 1648 Tyler Avenue, El Monte. Aurora, Columbine, UCLA, Christina Grimmie, and Pulse happened. These are words in reference to events, words that hammer at our conscience and crush our spirit to remind us of the truth of hatred and anger that are driving metal fingers.

Metal weapons, the source of power that I had mentioned in a previous article, are the common denominator to these events. Firstgraders, middle-aged workpartygoers, high school students, moviegoers, a professor, a singer, and almost one hundred innocent clubgoers have lost their lives or have been ruined by these bullets. As an American society, where do our priorities lie? What event will be the last, the final wake-up call to create stricter gun regulations and to keep a closer

Forget the threat of ISIS or Al Qaeda or North Korea because our own people home threaten our domestic more than terrorists. One foreign attack fifteen years ago and Homeland Security and the TSA were funded. However, numerous accounts of shootings within the past twenty years and others have barely lifted a finger.

We fear what we don’t know, that is why we are so quick to blame terrorists or ISIS for these horrors.

We don’t truly know or understand the associated cultures of these groups, that is why fingers are quickly pointed. However, we also fear association with the culprit. We are afraid to admit the wrongdoings of American citizens because we’re American citizens,

too, and admitting all these means we have something in common with the shooters. It is time to live up to the fact that these shooters are our people, and we have to take care of domestic affairs as prominently as we do foreign affairs. Inputting stricter gun laws, making it inconvenient and difficult to purchase guns, and ridding ourselves of mental health stigma are some ways we can combat this issue. We must admit that we have become bystanders to bullies by not doing anything to stop the suspect from hurting the victims and we have to place punishment where punishment is needed.

Admit it, America, that June 12, 2016 has to be our domestic wake-up call just as September 11, 2001 was our foreign wake-up call. Don’t let another person lose their pulse.

The word “Family” should give us a clue; It does say, “Father and Mother I Love You”.

Look how each letter spelled like no other; F stands for Father, A for And, M for Mother, I for I, L for Love, and Y for You. But there’s a lot more what a family can do.

A family consists of a loving Father and Mother; Showing their children the love for one another.

A mutual admiration with feelings deep and strong; Making each person feel that they really do belong.

All families are what makes the world go round; At least that is what most people have found.

A family lives in a house that’s a home they share; With joy, love, hope, sorrow and dreams living there.

It can be a wonderful place for an entire lifetime; If they keep good thoughts of each person in mind.

Tech is Taking Hold at District’s Rosemead’s Parent of the Year Hopes Adult Transition Program

Now that summer is here, Brian Stafford anticipates the movies he wants to see not feature-length flicks like the new “Star Trek” or “Ghostbusters,” but home videos by his students during their vacations.

That, at least, is his hope, though the reality is he’ll be lucky if even one or two of the 16 youth he’s expecting to return in the fall show up with footage from their family adventures.

It’s much harder for many if not all of his students to successfully reproduce at home the same results they reach in school, when they’re not under Stafford’s guidance.

vere learning challenges.

He said his particular students, who range from mild to moderate disability levels, made significant progress over the last year in learning how to utilize personal technology to explain themselves and teach new skills.

The class as a whole was successfully taught how to combine still photos and graphics into visual presentations using the PowerPoint Program and then went on to learn how to capture and produce video through iMovie, a digital media editing app developed by Apple.

In one production exercise, his students developed a 10-minute video presentation “which took our viewers outside of the classroom and into the community to see what we do in live-action,” Stafford said.

“Students really liked that because it was a lot more interactive.”

In the end, Stafford wants each of his students to know “they can do things at home, in their personal lives, with family and friends...they can be thinking of different ways to express themselves and communicate and share their own experiences.”

It might not be unusual that Shaunna Homann just completed her fifth year as a parent volunteer at Rosemead High School except that her daughter, Shaianne, graduated in 2015 and is now studying music education at Long Beach State.

That fact wasn’t lost to the energetic preschool teacher when she was one of six each from a different school campus recently named the El Monte Union High School District’s “Parent Volunteer of the Year.”

Of course, Homann said with a laugh, “My daughter’s been gone for a year.”

Summer school is into its second week in the El Monte Unified High School District, and students are doing more than just repairing their transcripts.

Traditionally, class offerings

during the summer months were aimed mainly at those needing to make up classes or earn added credits needed for graduation, explains Interim Superintendent Edward Zuniga.

of the district’s regular-year students sign up for summer school and 50 percent of those are specifically looking to boost their grade point averages in some way.

But other “kids and parents” not focused on credit recovery “were complaining about there being nothing for them to do in summer school,” said Zuniga, who added growing numbers of families “need their kids at school” during the summertime and desire a greater variety of elective classes to choose from.

As a result, students who attend summertime classes can now choose from an enhanced selection of electives that include art, foreign language and critical thinking classes.

The response from the student population “has been great,” Zuniga said.

The summer “blend,” as he calls it, of academic core classes and the more creative electives is being offered at all of the district’s five comprehensive high schools. The district is now also offering credit recovery courses online.

“Summer instruction is a way to ensure students are creditcurrent. That’s the primary goal,” said Zuniga. “But, now, there’s also an option for every student to take enrichment courses” and experience more of the opportunity high school is designed to offer.

Summer sessions started last week at all of the sites except South El Monte High School, which launched its summer schedule June 20th.

She hopes the commitment she and her husband, Gregory, continue to show to Shaianne’s alma mater inspires other parents, like her own mother’s and father’s focus on service inspired her.

Volunteering, she says, “shows the importance of me caring about my daughter’s activities” and demonstrates that Shaianne “always has had a support system.”

Even if they tell their parents they don’t care, Homann said with conviction, “the kids truly do appreciate you being there.”

‘Time Jockey’ State Playhouse

Pasadena …. The performing arts have always been an important part of the culture of the City of Pasadena. One-hundred years ago, Gilmor Brown was asked to look into starting a community theater and arts program by a number of interested parties. Brown, along with a small group of actors, had produced plays in the old Savoy Theater under the name of the Pasadena Community Theater and was known as the producer of quality shows and programs. When the Savoy Theater was permanently closed, a group of influential persons convinced Brown to open a theater fit for Pasadena. Soon money was being raised and close to 1,200 people donated nearly $180,000 in a 2-week period. A vacant parcel of land on South El Molino was purchased and construction was started.

On May 18, 1925, a gala grand opening introduced the new Pasadena Playhouse to the City of Pasadena and its eager public.

Brown built more than the main playhouse theater, constructing five smaller theaters around the front patio of the main entrance.

In addition, the College of Theater Arts was established just as Hollywood was transitioning from silent movies to ‘talkie’ movies. The Pasadena Playhouse center could boast of five venues taking place on five stages all at the same time. The Playhouse enjoyed a run of successful performances as well as financial growth and the arts grew in Pasadena.

But Brown died 35 years later in 1960, and a leadership absence caused the management of the Pasadena Playhouse to fall into financial crisis. By 1969, the Playhouse was closed and the facility abandoned.

In 1975, the City of Pasadena stepped in, purchased the property and then restored the building to its prominent position in the community. Today the Playhouse is being run by numerous volunteers and donors have opened up their resources to keep the Playhouse’s doors open.

Quality performances are scheduled throughout the year and productions have received very positive reviews and recognition in the theater arts community.

One of the feature perfor-

mances at the Playhouse was the production of all 37 Shakespeare plays in the chronological order when Shakespeare wrote them. Performers who have gone through the Pasadena Playhouse system include Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, William Holden, Sally Struthers and Charles Bronson. The Pasadena Playhouse is the second oldest regional theater in the United States and was unanimously proclaimed the Official State Theater by the California State Legislature in 1937. In 1977, The State of California honored the Pasadena Playhouse as an historical landmark and shortly thereafter it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Native Sons of Golden West and the Native Daughters of the Golden West dedicated the Playhouse as an historical landmark in 1948. In addition to the Playhouse and surrounding arts center, a 1935 freestanding neon sign was installed on famous Colorado Boulevard to direct patrons to the entrance of the playhouse. The neon sign is in the same Spanish style as the playhouse is designed and is visible to hundreds of thousands of commuters and pedestrians who venture along Colorado Boulevard especially during the New Years’ Day famous Tournament of Roses parade. Recently, the Native Sons of the Golden West awarded the Pasadena Playhouse with a grant to repair and preserve the historic neon sign and provide guidance to theater patrons.

The Pasadena Playhouse has maintained its elite status among small theaters in California and the United States, and is worthy of its title as the ‘State Theater of California’…..

The Heart of LA Run on Saturday, April 2, 2016, was a Key Club Multi-Division service event spearheaded

by Cali-Nev-Ha District Division 25. It annually helps raise funds for the California Hospital Medical Center.

This is one of the largest birthing hospitals in the state. 100% of the proceeds from this year’s event were designated to help purchase equipment for the Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Labor and Delivery and Pediatrics departments.

There was not very much to do at the run and, compared to some of our other efforts, it was a comparatively relaxing event. We directed cars into the right streets and helped drivers avoid road blocks. There were some stubborn people who did not listen, so they had to waste their own time and drive around. San Gabriel Celebrate 4th of July with Parade and Kids’ Day picnic

The City of San Gabriel will celebrate Independence Day with the annual 4th of July Parade and Kids’ Day picnic on Monday, July 4.

Both the parade and the picnic are free to attend and open to the entire community. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. (a new time from last year) at Plaza Park, 428 S Mission Drive, then head north on Mission and east on Broadway to end at Smith Park, 232 W Broadway Ave. The city will accept parade entries on the day of the parade at 8 a.m. at Plaza Park. Community groups and residents who participate in the parade will be awarded prizes for most patriotic decorations and

Following the parade, community members can enjoy the Kids’ Day picnic at Smith Park, featuring a free barbecue lunch, entertainment provided by San Gabriel Library, free recreational swim at Smith Park Pool from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., summer activities including a watermelon eating contest and picnic games, and fun booths and activities sponsored by community organizations. New this year, there will also be a live band on stage playing music for picnic attendees to enjoy.

Jobseekers from far and near made their way through the doors of the Grace T. Black Auditorium on Friday, June 17, in search of employment from more than 50 companies represented at the City of El Monte’s annual free job fair.

More than 2,500 men and women of diverse ages and backgrounds took advantage of 3,000 job openings from such companies as UPS, FedEx, Amtrak, Caltrans, San Gabriel Valley Water Company, United States Postal Service, California Highway Patrol and dozens more.

“These employers are here because they have job opportunities that need to be filled,” El Monte Councilman “J” Gomez said to the crowd of people as they entered the auditorium. “Our goal today is to put our com-

munity back to work.”

As one of the largest job fairs in the San Gabriel Valley, there were opportunities available to work in customer service, sales, retail, manufacturing, administration, accounting, law enforcement and more.

Several dozen walked away with jobs lined up or with scheduled interviews and orientations on the following business day.

“There was such a huge turnout, which shows the great need in the community,” El Monte resident Cristina Contreras said as she filled out a job application. “Everyone was very helpful and approachable and I am thankful for this opportunity.”

Contreras recently moved to El Monte less than a year ago and learned about the

job fair after seeing a banner advertising for it in the street. With a background in accounting, she found an opportunity to put her skills and experience to work with an accounting opportunity offered by San Gabriel Valley Transit.

Several jobseekers throughout the day also had the opportunity to take advantage of resume critiquing services offered on location as well as free access to laptop computers equipped with Wi-Fi. In partnership with the Employment Development Department of California and Los Angeles County Office of Education, the job fair has connected thousands of qualified employees with companies throughout the last several years.

I guess I’m not clairvoyant when it comes to basketball predictions. Last week I con-gratulated the Golden State Warriors in advance of winning their second consecutive NBA title over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Yeah…

The Warriors were up three games to one and no team previously in NBA history had ever comeback from such a deficit in the championship series. The Warriors had just set a league record with 73 regular season wins. Who would pick against a team like this?

I mean, besides me?

See this is the reason it is foolish to gamble on sports.

I’ve spent my entire life, playing, coaching, and writing about sports and I never bet on sports because you never know what is going to happen. And if anybody tells you they know what is going to happen then they are full of it…Because no one knows.

If people really knew sports how about all the folks that lost money on this NBA title?

Try something else. I’m not a Los Angeles Angels fan. They can win, they can lose, and I could careless.

I’ve been to spring training each of the last two years and have seen Jeff Weaver pitch.

There are probably a dozen high school pitchers in the San Gabriel Valley, playing for teams we cover, that have a better fastball than Weaver. In fact, Weaver’s fastball is so slow that if you were riding it you couldn’t get a ticket for speeding on the freeway.

If you were a gambling man, you wouldn’t bet on Weaver to win.

Then Weaver pitches against the Oakland A’s on Sunday and throws a complete game, three-hit shutout using only 95 pitches.

Unbelievable.

Then again, it is not unbelievable because it is sports.

Sports are not predictable, true some things are more likely than others, but you never know what is going to happen.

You don’t know what is going to happen as a fan, you don’t know what is going to hap-pen as a writer, and you don’t always know what is going to happen as an athlete. This is true, even the athletes don’t know what is going to happen.

This is why the game has to be played.

And in a larger sense, this is why life always needs

Schools from all over Southern California participated in various events including weight lifting, tire flipping, obstacle course and even a relay event.

The players most forgotten when touchdowns are scored and game stories are written are the guys that plow the road to help them get across the goal line. Here are a few

ing this for about two hours we went back to the checkin booth to see if there were more tasks that needed to be completed. We then helped with miscellaneous needs like taking down tables, cleaning up, and things of the such.

The Pasadena Church Dinner on April 20, 2016, was a wonderful evening.

We all met up at the church or a special dinner where we were charged with providing meal service. After a quick overview of the events as people from the church spoke, we started to set up the dinner and made coffee for those arriving.

Right before serving, there was supposed to be a meal break for the volunteers. Because it was so hectic, we skipped our break to continue working. More and more people started coming, so we had to work quickly.

The salad was so delicious, we had to make more. We were basically serving food to them and then handled the cleanup, which took about two hours. We earned $300 for the Club.

Civic Pride Day on April 30, 2016, at Rosemead’s Savannah Cemetery was a well-spent Saturday for the participating volunteers. The cemetery is a state historical landmark – founded in pioneer days as the first Prot-

estant cemetery in Southern California. Together with community members RHS and other Key Clubbers pulled out weeds, cleaned grave-stones, spread mulch, planted trees/flowers, and built a dry river bed RHS Key Club Secretary Sandy Rong noted that “It was a great experience for me because it was my first time actually working gardening related work. It was tiring, but worth it. I got to spend time with my fellow members.”

After four hours of hard work, Panda Express provided lunch for everyone who had helped with the event.

Overall, everything about the day was just perfect.

On May 14, 2016, Kicks for a Better Future in Montebello was a very fun Key Club Division 10 South event sponsored by the American Youth Soccer Association as part of its youth with disabilities outreach. It was great to be able to meet new people from our division. There were numerous activities including a bake sale, raffle, and volunteers actually playing in a soccer game with the kids with disabilities. We were able to guide them along and make goals.

The Cali-Nev-Ha Region 13 Key Club Recognition Banquet entitled “Tangled

in Service” was held at the Rosemead Community Center on Sunday afternoon, May 22, 2016. Officers from three divisions spoke of their experiences in Key Club and their hopes for the 20162017 year.

The Saturday, May 28, 2016, Rosemead Park clean-up was a collaboration between other clubs on the Rosemead High School campus and the RHS Key Club. The event was started off with icebreakers. We played for about an hour.

The next hour was dedicated to the actual cleaning of the park. After an hour of hard work beautifying the park, we were finally done.

Division 10 S award winners – Two Rosemead High School Key Club officers were awarded certificates for May by Lt. Governor Samantha Voong. Secretary Sandy Rong and Technology Director Emily Luu were honored respectively for MRF submission promptness and Officer of Month for work on the Club’s social media resources (including introduction of snapchat and revamping of the website.)

Both officers have also been instrumental in improving distribution of K-family bulletins to the Club and publicizing same via Facebook and text messages.

This scholarship recognition was organized by Assemblymember Roger Hernández to students in his district that show community service and academic excellence. “The essence of this scholarship is to

empower and broaden the access to education and resources to be able to obtain academic achievement, where we are able to combat poverty and suppress inequality,” stated Assemblymember Hernández.

Each student received a one-thousand dollar scholarship to use for their studies.

According to Navy

officials, because of the demanding environment aboard submarines, personnel are accepted only after rigorous testing and observation. Submariners are some of the most highly trained and skilled people in the Navy. The training is highly technical, and each crew has to be able to operate, maintain, and repair every system or piece of equipment on board. Regardless of their specialty, everyone also has to learn how everything on the ship works and how to respond in emergencies to become “qualified in submarines” and earn the right to wear the coveted gold or silver dolphins on their uniform.

“The greatest fulfillment I have received in serving aboard this boat is in the missions we have completed,” said Carnevale.

Challenging submarine living conditions actually build strong fellowship among the elite crew, Navy officials explained. The crews are highly motivated, and quickly adapt to changing conditions. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches, and drills.

“It is a great opportunity that I get to give back to my country in such a unique career in the Navy,” added Carnevale.

The Peterson Principle

It’s almost too hot to write a column. I don’t mind warm weather but when you see a squirrel putting on sunscreen you know the temperature is a little too high.

I mean it’s so hot every fat guy sweating in the San Gabriel Valley smells like bacon. I bought a loaf of bread at Vons and by the time I got home it was toast. I mean it’s hot! It’s so hot you could fry an egg on former Temple City head coach Randy Backus’ head as I write this but I’ll try to muddle through. **I don’t know a lot about soccer but I do know you shouldn’t get beat 7-0 in a Copa quarterfinals game. If you take the dog years theory (7 years equals one) as soccer relates to football, Mexico was trounced by Chile 49-0.

I’m hoping Mexico Coach Juan Carlos Osorio has his resume together and interviews well.

I like the U.S chances in the semifinals against Argentina. Actually, who am I kidding? I really don’t.

Even if you don’t know soccer from swimming and don’t know the difference between a yellow card and a yellow light, you’ve probably heard of Lionel Messi. He’s the Babe Ruth of baseball, the Michael Jordan of basketball. If Argentina has Messi, and they do, I kind of like their chances. **I’m not sure how much a linemen competition actually helps an offensive/ defensive lineman’s skills but I look at it like this. If you’re able to push over a tire that is bigger than you about five to seven times in 100-degree heat it has to help your strength. Heck if nothing else, it shows your dedication and motivation.

I imagine the linemen participating in the West Covina competition Saturday could have come up with a million excuses as to why they couldn’t be there.

But there they were tossing tires, pushing sleds, shoving a full size truck, and running with kettlebells as the unrelenting sun beat down on them. I’m sure it gives the coaches an idea of who really wants to play and who doesn’t.

Who looked good? Well, keep in mind it was a linemen competition (no skill players) and Chino had close to 30 guys...30 big guys. Los Altos looks like it has its line back and Arroyo was throwing around the weights in the weight room. Not sure how Nogales will compete this year

but it was nice to see the Nobles busting their tails in all events Saturday. **This column is being written before Game 7 of the NBA Finals but I really only have one question regarding the series. If the Warriors lose will Stephen Curry now be known as Chokin’ Curry? You know, chicken Curry...now chokin’... hello is this thing on?

The awards will be officially presented at the 12th annual Jim Staunton Champions for Character awards ceremony on Sept. 26 at the Grand Conference Center in Long Beach. Recipients will receive banners to hang in their school gymnasiums.

“Azusa and Gladstone high schools set a high bar for the ideals of integrity and sportsmanship, and demonstrate unequivocally that athletics is just as much about fair play, dignity and grace as it is victory,” AUSD Superintendent Dr. Linda Kaminski said. “Congratulations to our high-achieving schools for being recognized for their outstanding leadership.”

Prior recipients include Azusa High student-athlete Destiny Tellez and principal Ramiro Rubalcaba in 2015, Azusa High cross-country coach Patricia Dorsey in 2014 and Gladstone High assistant principal Jacalyn Littrel in 2012.

“This is a tremendous honor to receive a Champions for Character award,” Azusa High athletic director Sandy Gahring said. “These awards are presented to only the most extremely dedi-

cated and hard-working individuals, those who display the six pillars of character – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. I am so proud of our school and so happy for my colleague Coach Shore and Irma Ramos.”

The Champions for Character awards are presented in honor of former CIF-SS commissioner Jim Staunton, who helped develop the criteria for the six pillars of character. A golf tournament is held every year to help fund scholarships for Champions for Character studentathletes. This year’s tournament will be held June 21 at Rio Hondo Golf Course in Downey.

“Our mission at Azusa Unified is to teach our children to be not just outstanding achievers,” AUSD Board President Yolanda Rodriguez-Pena said. “Thank you to the CIF for continuing to recognize the efforts of our students, coaches and administrators.”

Students Run L.A. (SRLA) Marathon Runners from Kranz and Madrid Schools Honored

Olympic gold-medalist runner, Jesse Owens said we all have dreams and in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort.

These attributes are exactly what the student athletes from Kranz Intermediate School and Madrid Middle School have who successfully participated in the 31st annual Los Angeles Marathon as part of the Students Run L.A. (SRLA) program.

Twenty-five students from Madrid and fifteen from Kranz were among the nearly 23,000 entrants for the event held February 14. The student runners were recently honored by the Mountain View School District Board of Education for their outstanding achievement.

The students were praised for training for and running the grueling 26.2 mile marathon, braving the extreme heat of the day, and reaching their goal of completing the race.

“We are proud to recognize our student runners for their tremendous achievement,” said Sean Grycel, Kranz Principal. “They are

to be commended for their dedication over the year and for the fine job they did representing their schools and the District.”

Both Kranz’s and Madrid’s SRLA teams were supported by teachers, coaches, staff members, parents and volunteers who trained and ran with the students. Both teams began training in September, running four days a week for five months and logging 100’s of mile as they prepared for the marathon.

Running the iconic “Stadium to the Sea” course, the students ran from Dodger Stadium to the Pacific Ocean passing many of L.A.’s world-famous landmarks.

Bands, cheerleaders and other entertainers were stationed at mile markers throughout the race providing motivation for the runners. At mile marker 19 Kranz, Madrid and District staff members as well as family members could be found encouraging the students and cheering them on as they moved along the marathon course.

The SRLA program provided the student runners with a pair of running shoes

and race day uniforms, as well as entrance into minimarathons and other races prior to the L.A. Marathon.

Throughout their training the teams participated in several running events including 5k and 10k runs as well as half marathons leading up to the final challenge of the 26.2 mile L.A. Marathon.

In addition to the stellar athletes, the Board members and administrators also acknowledged the coaches and parent volunteers. Leading the Kranz team were teachers, Alice Shum, Marcos Garcia, and Jacqueline Hernandez and for Madrid it was teachers, Merce Chavez, David Dorf and Susan Dhluy.

“The SRLA program at both schools could not happen without the tremendous dedication of the coaches

and volunteers who dedicate many hours to ensuring our students are ready for this incredible feat. We greatly appreciate their efforts in supporting our student runners and for making it possible for the program to exist at Kranz and Madrid,” said Ray Andry, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.

Proudly wearing their L.A. Marathon medals and “Marathon Finisher” sweatshirts, the students agreed that completing the marathon was a long journey that required a lot of time and sacrifice, and challenged them physically and mentally like they’ve never been challenged before. But, they said, completing one of the most demanding physical challenges an individual can undertake was worth it. For

She was happy to be back at Parkview and present the dictionaries to the students.

“We are in our eighth year of providing dictionaries to the students in the Mountain View School District,” said Donna McEntire, Elks Club member and retired MVSD teacher. “The Elks are an organization that helps people. We support our veterans, help communities and offer scholarships for college. Some of our favorite projects are working with youth,” she said. “The Elks value education and we are very happy to give back to our community and support students with their educational endeavors.”

Each student was very excited to receive the dictionary, which is packed full of resources and will serve as a great learning tool.

“This dictionary is a wonderful resource book full of information to help you learn,” said McEntire.

“It has 35,000 words in it as well as a resource section with information on our 50 states, maps of continents and countries, a list of all our presidents, a multiplication table, information on the planets and solar system, the periodic table of elements and it even shows you how to do sign language,” she added as the students cheered with excitement.

“We want you to be lifelong learners and use this dictionary year after year to keep learning.”

McEntire shared that by using the dictionary students can improve their vo-

cabulary and find powerful words, learn definitions, and the parts of speech.

“Six of the largest words in the English language are in this dictionary,” she said.

“There are words with 48 letters in them and the longest word takes up an entire page and has 1,909 letters.

Let’s hope that word is never on your spelling test.”

Along with the students, the teachers and administrators were thrilled with the generous donation and know the dictionaries will make a great impact and be an essential tool for the students.

“The Elks Club is a terrific organization that provides a lot of support to schools and communities,” said Maureen O’Hearn, Parkview’s Dean of Instruction. “We are for-

tunate to have a partnership with them and the dictionaries are a true gift for our students and an example of the continued kindness and generosity the Elks show to our students.”

Laura Gaber, a teacher at Miramonte School appreciates the Elks Club for always supporting MVSD’s students with the free dictionaries, as well as opportunities to participate in essay contests and poster contests throughout the year.

“The students are always excited to get their dictionaries and they will be a great help in the classroom and at home as they complete their assignments,” said Gaber.

Miranda, a 3rd grader at Parkview School was happy to get her very own diction-

ary.

“I have a dictionary at home but it’s my dad’s so it will be good to have one for myself,” she said. “I will use it a lot. It was so nice of the Elks Club to give them to us.”

Johnny, also a Parkview 3rd grader, said it was the second biggest book he’s ever seen. The biggest being the Chronicles of Narnia.

“I like that there are so many things in this dictionary,” he said. “It will be great to learn new words and I can’t wait to look at that really long word that has 1,000 letters.”

According to McEntire third grade is the perfect grade level for dictionaries because it is the grade in which dictionary skills

are taught in most schools.

Additionally, third grade represents a critical juncture in a child’s education - it is the year a student makes the transition from learning to read to reading to learn.

“We are so thankful to the Elks for their continued outpouring of support for our students and families,” said Lillian Maldonado French, MVSD Superintendent. “The gift of these dictionaries continues to make a profound impact on our students, helping them in their quest for knowledge and providing an essential tool for their academic achievement. Xbox Reveals New Console

Microsoft revealed at this years E3 their newest console with the codename Scorpio. Scorpio doesn’t have a design yet so there aren’t any photos at this time. The console does boast an upgraded hardware to the Xbox One. It will feature an 8 core AMD APU with 320 gigabit per second of memory. That’s a lot of processing power and Morpheus has 6 teraflops of graphics power giving it the ability to produce 4K video graphics. The system will also give you the ability to play VR games.

Xbox also released a smaller version of their Xbox One, it’s called Xbox One S. The console is 40 percent smaller then the Xbox One S. It has the power to play ultra HD movies.

The console also removed the power brick that was outside and added it to the internals of the Xbox One S. The console also boasts a new controller that is more sensitive to movements and changes its connection form RF to Bluetooth. With this improvement you are now able to play further then

before and your controller will work with your PC. The Xbox also added an RF receiver to the front for future universal TV remotes and other brands universal remotes.

Both the Xbox One S and the project Scorpio will be fully compatible with all the peripherals that are available for the Xbox One. Xbox One S will be available in Early August. Project Scorpio will not be available until the holidays in 2017.

Reunion Time in “Finding Dory”

Andrew Stanton’s 2003 Oscar winning “Finding Nemo” teamed clown fish Marlin (Albert Brooks) with forgetful blue tang Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) for an undersea adventure. Thirteen years later, the much hoped for sequel, “Finding Dory,” has finally arrived in theaters.

A brief, well-crafted backstory reveals Dory has always had short-term memory loss. Her loving, protective parents, Jenny (Diane Keaton) and Charlie (Eugene Levy), help the incredibly cute toddler “just

keep swimming” with her challenge and warn her to avoid “the undertow.”

Fast-forward to one year after the events in “Finding Nemo.” A stingray migration and the word “undertow” trigger flashbacks for Dory.

When she believes her long lost parents are at the Marine Life Institute (MLI) in California, hesitant Marlin and supportive, adventurous Nemo (newcomer Hayden Rolence), join their friend’s quest.

Once inside MLI, Dory meets mimic octopus Hank (Ed O’Neill) who is afraid of

the open ocean. He reluctantly helps her search for her parents. Along the way, Dory reunites with nearsighted whale shark Destiny (Kaitlin Olson), a childhood friend. Meanwhile, Marlin and Nemo enlist the help of sea lions and a bedraggled bird.

Stanton and co-writer Victoria Strouse’s plot explores themes of connection, confidence, and definitions of family. Included are a new set of appealing characters.

Destiny and her neighbor, beluga whale Bailey (Ty Burrell), are charming even when bickering as only good friends can. Dory’s memories of her parents who nicknamed her “kelpcake” are especially heartwarming.

Clever touches add humor.

Octopus Hank creatively disguises and camouflages himself. His baby stroller sequence is hilarious. In “Nemo,” gulls’ cries were amusingly translated to “Mine, mine, mine.” This time, sea lion barks are interpreted to mean “Off, off, off,” as two sea lion buddies defend their rock. touching and funny moments.

As in “Nemo,” beautiful underwater visuals capture the breathtaking diversity of ocean life. Human pollution also plays a role. Dory ends up in quarantine at MLI after becoming caught in abandoned plastic six pack rings.

The institute’s tidal touch pools are fun for kids but scary for the sea creatures.

Stanton and crew don’t overdo these themes, letting the audience draw their own conclusions.

Favorite “Finding Nemo” characters make appearances. Fans should stay through the final credits for amus-

ing scenes of Hank’s camouflage skills and surprise cameos at the end. And, audience members shouldn’t go to Morro Bay in hopes of visiting MLI. The fictional institute is loosely based on the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Vancouver’s Aquarium.

The film is preceded by the Pixar short “Piper.” Sharing an ocean theme, the beautifully rendered animation follows a young sandpiper’s first day finding meals along the shore.

5 out of 5 stars- A worthy follow-up to “Nemo”.

MPAA rating: PG for mild thematic elements. Running time: 1hr., 37min.

Patrick Wilson (Insidious) and Vera Farmiga (The Departed) return as Ed and Lorraine Warren. Music was made by Joseph Bishara, who is best known for his work in the “Insidious” franchise and “The Conjuring.”

There aren’t many movies that get me scared. But “The Conjuring 2” delivered

and it was a great movie and feeling to have. The combination of scares with great acting and music really works in this film. James Wan knows there are better ways to scare someone then just by jump scares and he delivered. “The Conjuring 2” is the scariest movie I have seen this year. Grade A Rated R

In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren come out of a self-imposed sabbatical to travel to Enfield, a borough in north London. There, they meet Peggy Hodgson, an overwhelmed single mother of four who tells the couple that something evil is in her home. Ed and Lorraine believe her story when the youngest daughter starts to show signs of demonic possession. As the Warrens try to help the besieged girl, they become the next target of the malicious spirits.

They risk their lives to fight the demon out of the home.

The film is based on a true story from Ed and Lorraine Warren who also did the same with the home in Amityville.

James Wan returns to direct the sequel and he is best known for the hit “Insidious” and “Furious 7.”

He is known for reshaping the horror genre. James Wan also helped write the film with Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes. Hayes also wrote the original “Conjuring” as well. David Leslie Johnson helped, and he is known for “Wrath of the Titans.”
