The sun peeked out from the clouds, as the morning dew disappeared and families began to arrive at Mt. View Park, host to the 4th Annual Healthy Eggstravaganza Family Fun Day. Presented by the El Monte Parks, Recreation and Community Services Depart-

ment, the March 19th event proved to be a treat for the many families in attendance.

Cloverly Students Giving Back at Ronald McDonald House

Cloverly Elementary School’s Student Council has been actively finding ways to give back to the community. Students recently donated money and purchased an Italian dinner for the 24 family members that are currently residing at the Ronald McDonald House in Pasadena. The Ronald Mc Donald House

provides a home away from home for families that have children facing serious medical crises. Families are offered meals and a place to live close to the hospital.

by Mavis Hansen SPRING IS HERE! Spring began on Sunday, March 20th, sharing this important day with another important event, Palm Sunday. And of course, Palm Sunday leads us to a much celebrated Holiday, EASTER SUNDAY. Before the season of Lent, people in many parts of the world had parties, parades and celebrations such as Mardi Gras.

Now-a-days, even though we do not walk in an Easter Parade, new clothes still remain a tradition for many and some even like a new hat! One of the best-known Easter symbols is the egg, which has symbolized the return of spring and renewed life since ancient days. The egg is said to be a symbol of life because in living creatures life begins in the egg.

The Persians and Egyptians colored eggs and ate them during their new year’s celebration which came in the spring. In North America and some European countries, children enjoy hunting for Easter eggs, which they believe were hidden by the Easter Bunny. Other Easter symbols include the sun, which stands for good fortune, the rooster for fulfillment of wishes, the deer for good health and flowers for love and charity. Don’t forget to buy extra eggs for the children to color and decorate. Be sure and boil for a full 20 minutes. No matter what your traditions, family gatherings or whatever else you do, HAPPY EASTER! Spring is a wonderful time to be outdoors and a great time to get that healthy exercise. Exercise is different for everyone, from a walk alone to all kinds of activity with others. If you have never tried Tai Chi, an opportunity to observe or participate awaits you.

Student Corner How To: Self-Accept “Accept yourself.” “Love yourself or no one else will.”

These words and phrases infiltrate our Instagram feeds and Twitter timelines, but overall, what does it even mean? Loving yourself means accepting your entirety- your flaws, your mistakes, your achievements, and your marks of beauty, strength, and will.

We need to spread this lovefull of compassion, caring, and understanding- to make our communities better and a more peaceful place to reside in. Many significant persons have discussed the importance of self love, such as the ever-iconic Jennifer Lawrence. J-Law, in every interview and statement, advocates the idea that individuals should love themselves, especially their bodies. In an interview with Nylon, she

said, “I think we’re all born with certain traits and qualities and it’s important to just work with it and be happy.”

Wise words, Jennifer. But although we can hear these words over and over again, and fake it until we make it, we don’t always believe it.

But in order to make that genuine, real connection, you must find the things that are amazing about you, because I bet they outweigh the good, and be persistent.

Whenever I have a bad thought of myself, I think about how great I can be.

Continue to yell self-love at yourself, and keep reminding yourself why you should be accepted in the first place.

It’s a daily progress of reminding yourself of your best assets rather than your bad ones.

It’s finding motivation and making an effort to eat right, exercise and spoil yourself every now and then with massages, your favorite dessert, or a vacation. Accepting yourself is all a current effort to just become the person you’ve always wanted to be. When you have reached that ideal, you’d be hopelessly and madly in love with the person you have become.

Spirit of Service Lives Rosemead’s Science Olympians Keep Winning in Ledesma Blood

Anthony Liu has spent a lot of the last few months at Rosemead High School going around in circles and staying on course for academic accolades.

A member of the school’s Science Olympiad team, Liu opted this year to participate in four of the science-based competition’s 23 individual events, particularly Wright Stuff, in which contestants are tasked with building miniature aircraft out of materials of their choosing. The flying machines are judged on how long they remain

aloft, following a circular flight pattern.

During the divisional rounds of Science Olympiad’s Los Angeles County tournament at Occidental College in late February, Liu’s creation stayed in the air for two minutes and 15 seconds, earning third place in the Wright Stuff event, one of the 11 medals claimed by Rosemead’s squad, which placed third overall and will be advancing to the state competition in April at Cal Tech.

Liu was one of a few Rosemead Team members who tried to explain last week how and why the school’s Science Olympiad program has consistently ended up one of not only the top performing

groups in the Greater Los Angeles area, but the entire state.

They all agreed, along with team adviser Maria Goldsmith, that Rosemead’s Olympians typically are first introduced to scientific competition before even entering high school, at one of the intermediate schools that feed into Rosemead most notably Muscatel Middle School, which itself is distinguished for its high-powered Olympiad program.

Liu asserted the process of scientific investigation, which is the basis for all of the program’s events, shows students they should “never take things for granted.” In other words, people should, in whatever they do, consider all options and see things through to the end.

The Science Olympiad program, he said, has “taught us to be competitive in whatever you do.”

South El Monte Folklorico Dancers Connect with Culture, Community

From one teacher’s need, a lasting culture of giving was born.

That’s how Lisa Holt recalls the start of the annual blood drives at Fernando R. Ledesma High School, where students and faculty alike have shown an ongoing interest in helping others.

The next on-campus drive, held in collaboration with the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, which will provide a mobile donation van for the effort, takes happens May 5 and is open mainly to Ledesma’s students, teachers and staff.

About eight years ago, one of Ledesma’s former principals was undergoing cancer treatment at the City of Hope, said Holt, coordinator of the school’s independent studies program for the last 25 years.

The students and faculty at the time sought a way they could offer their support and settled on holding a blood drive.

Since then, an estimated 100 students from the high school have signed up annu-

ally for the medical center’s annual Honor Court, which recognizes students who donate their blood three or more times during their senior year.

Enough students qualify for the honor court, and enough blood is collect yearly, that the high school has distinguished itself not only against school’s its size, but much larger ones too, said Holt.

The school’s drive in October collected about 69 pints of blood while the Feb. 2 drive collect about 62, she explained.

Holt, also the daughter of the school’s namesake, suggests the blood drive has become such an important part of Ledesma’s culture because it provides the students who have a limited selection of activities to get behind, when compared with their counterparts at regular high schools an important and meaningful way to contribute to their community.

“Now,” she said, “they’re going to take it and pay it forward.”

When Sandra Amezcua and Stephany Covarrubias, signed up for the folklorico ballet troupe at South El Monte High School, each sought to better understand their ethnic Mexican culture.

The two, both sophomores, didn’t even think about how their new exploration of traditional Mexican dance could inspire those around them to seek out those same cultural ties.

While waiting to perform at a community fund raiser last week, the friend explain they had generally believed people in the South El Monte neighborhoods where they live hardly seek out a better understanding of their Mexican heritage.

“A lot of people don’t appreciate our culture,” said Covarrubias.

And yet, many of those who live on her street and seemed

too preoccupied with their lives to even notice what she has been doing have eagerly approached Covarrubias, asking the dates and times of her upcoming performances.

“That’s something beautiful to see, them coming together to become part of their culture,” she said. Often, when Amezcua walks home after performances or practices from Covarrubias’ house, decked out in full dance attire, “little kids playing outside start looking at me and get excited,” she said.

“What’s part of me,” Amezcua said, is apparently “what’s part of them.”

The South El Monte folklorico group has been pared down over the years from “a whole bunch” of performers to what is now a core group of six dedicated dancers, said Ramon Lopez, in his first year as the group’s faculty adviser.

He looks forward to the group again attracting many more dancers, especially males, and begin performing again at a variety of local life celebrations and events.

In the meantime, Covarrubias is simply enjoying the fact that even though “I have horrible coordination, I can dance!”

What Adult Education Means to Me,Trang Nguyen

I came to the United States four months ago because it was my mother’s decision. It took me one year to decide to move to the U.S. because I didn’t want to live far away from my father and my younger brother. When I came to the U.S., I could speak only a few English sentences, even though I had learned English grammar for several years in my country.

I was disappointed with myself because I couldn’t make a conversation if a cashier started to talk to me, and I couldn’t ask my teacher or a receptionist assistant if I had problems. My early life in the U.S. made me feel miserable and worthless. It was a desperate situation when nobody could understand what I was talking about, so I refused to go outside and despised myself. When I lost self-confident living in the U.S., I found out adult education on the Internet. I was determined to learn English as a Second Language (ESL) at El Monte-Rosemead Adult School.

First of all, I think the office staffs are very openminded and enthusiastic.

When I went to register at the office, they waited patiently until I finished talking, and they always smiled and had a respect for

me. It helped me to have a more motive drive to go to school. The teachers at this school are very devoted to their work.

Personally speaking, I love Mr. Fedorenko who is teaching me practical English in my level five class. He made a strong impression on me. I am very fond of the way he teaches the students,with his sense of humor, as well as his smile. In another ways, he stimulates me to come to school to meet him every day. After each class with him, my vocabulary is more and more enlarged, and I really feel I’m improving in my pronunciation.

Second, I have a chance to make friends here. There are many students from a variety of countries, such as China, France, Malaysia, Mexico, Korea, so on. They are going to this school with the same purpose, of improving their English skills. Although they have different cultures and languages, they are so expansive and friendly.

In addition, I have an opportunity to obtain other skills. Typically, I have a keyboarding computer class in the evening. I learned how to type smoothly and easily ten-key characters.

In my opinion, it’s necessary for my job in the future.

I’m planning to take Math classes to review my algebra and geometry in English and prepare for studying at college in the next year.

Finally, I’m completely happy and proud of myself for making the right decision in my life. I hope this essay writing can help newcomers to the U.S. to take advantage of this opportunity.

On Thursday, March 17, San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino was host to the Freestyle Dance Party, a night of revisiting the hits of the 1980s and 1990s with performances by Freestyle powerhouses Trinere, Lisa Lisa, and Stevie B. Freestyle is a form of electronic dance music that contains elements of hiphop, disco, Latin, electro, and house music.

Opening up the show was Trinere, who many consider the “Queen of Freestyle.”

The crowd cheered loudly as she began the show with her hit “They’re Playing Our Song.” She delighted the audience with “I’ll Be All You Ever Need,” and more chart-topping hits as many danced and sang along.

Up next was Lisa Lisa, who burst onto the scene in the 1980s as part of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. She en-

tertained the audience with hits including: “I Wonder If I Take You Home,” “Can You Feel the Beat,” “Head to Toe,” and “All Cried Out.” Last but not least was the “King of Freestyle” Stevie B. He performed many of his most popular hits including: “I Wanna Be the One,” “Dreaming of Love,” and “Party Your Body.” He also performed his number one hit from 1990, “Because I Love You (The Postman Song).”

Stevie B closed out the night with season favorite “Spring Love.” The crowd, enjoying this night of nostalgia as the sounds of freestyle filled the room, remained on their feet and danced to the very end. It was a great way for those in attendance to relive the sights and sounds of the 1980s and 1990s Freestyle music scene.

Filmed in El Monte, Solórzano had many residents as extras from El Monte in the film. Such as Andy Bueno,

The film has finished with initial filming and completed phase one of editing, but they are not done yet, and need your help. Only two process are needed to completed, color correction and sound design. Color correction insures the film has a consistent look and

• Six Park & Ride lots provide 1,500 parking spaces, but walking, biking, ridesharing, kiss & ride and buses provide additional connections Commuters now have six new Metro Gold Line Stations to choose from to catch a ride on Metro’s newest rail line serving the eastern San Gabriel Valley. With parking lots filling up quickly along the new line, here’s seven tips for ensuring you make your Metro Rail connection: 1. Get there early. Arrive as early as you can to get your parking spot. While

there are about 1,500 parking spaces available at six different stations, some stations, especially those in Azusa, are filling up early every morning.

2. Try another station.

Try driving to another station. Rather than parking in Azusa, drive two to three miles farther west to the Irwindale Gold Line Station.

It has 350 parking spaces and is just off the 210 Freeway at Irwindale Avenue.

Spaces have been available this week. Metro also will be placing parking attendants at both Azusa stations and the

‘Time Jockey’ Crucifixion

Excruciating Pain…. As the Easter holiday nears, all Christians recall the story of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The story of how he was crucified, died and eventually ascended into heaven to relieve the sins of all mankind has been told for centuries. But the story of the crucifixion has much more history than many people realize.

Over two-thousand years ago, the Phoenicians were first credited with devising crucifixion as a means of punishing criminal activity.

They had tried other methods such as death by spear, boiling in oil, impalement, stoning, strangulation, drowning and burning, but all these methods were deemed to be too quick to bring someone to death.

So they devised a cross as a means to induce a slow and excruciating death with some criminals lasting as long as two days while hanging from an upright cross. The Romans found crucifixion to be an excellent means to deter crime in their vast empire and in time became experts in the field. After suppressing the rebellion started by Spartacus, the Romans crucified 6,000 rebels in one day by hanging them on crosses from Capua to Rome. They would tie the criminal to the beams of the cross and drive spikes through the feet of the victims while hanging them from a cross.

However, death came too slowly and many times required a guard to be posted until the criminal expired.

In order to quicken the pace, the Romans instead decided to nail the criminal to the cross with a set of spikes through his wrists and another set through his crossed ankles. Unless a criminal was exceptionally strong, death usually came within a couple of hours. A cross stood 6 feet tall and could usually accommodate most men of that era as the criminals were placed on the cross with buckled knees. Each crucifixion was started at the noon hour.

Criminals were stripped of their clothing and a garment was wrapped around their waist. Then the cross was laid on the ground and the criminal was pushed down on top of the beams.

His arms were placed on the cross beams as he was held down by a couple of soldiers. The executioner sat over the criminal’s wrist

and pulled out one 5-inch square nail and hammered it into the criminal’s wrist at the point where his lifeline ends. The executioner then jumped to the other arm and did the same to nail the other wrist. With the criminal’s arms nailed to the cross, the criminal’s legs were crossed and a nail was hammered through his crossed ankles. With the criminal wreathing in pain, the cross was lifted with the criminal hanging from it. The strain and pain from the hammered wrist and ankles causes the criminal to groan loudly in anguish.

With his outstretched arms hammered into the wooden crossbeam, the only thing supporting his body were the nails attaching his body at the wrist and ankles to the wooden cross. In time, the criminal’s head dropped down and even though the loss of blood was significant, the criminal would eventually die of asphyxiation. Just as previous crucifixions, the victim would die within a 2-hour timeframe. If you happen to celebrate Easter his week, just remember the pain that Jesus had to endure after being crucified over two-thousand years ago and perhaps you will have a greater appreciation for the true meaning of Easter….

‘EGG’straordinary Spring Celebration

On Saturday, March 26 the San Gabriel Kiwanis Club Foundation and the City of San Gabriel will host the 72nd Annual “Egg”straordinary Spring Celebration, offering fun for all families at Smith Park, 232 W Broadway.

Attendees can enjoy a morning full of fun spring activities, including free face painting, a generous all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast for only $5, pancake races with prizes for winners, and a raffle for a flat screen TV and a tablet.

In addition, children will be divided into groups by age (2 and under, 3-5 years old, 6-7 years old, 8-9 years old) to hunt for 6,000 eggs hidden throughout the park.

For the pancake races, contestants grouped by age (ages 7-16 and adults) will

run 100 yards while balancing a pancake on a spatula.

Baldwin Park Unified Board Selects New Superintendent

Baldwin Park Unified School District’s Board of Education on Tuesday named 16-year District administrator Froilan N. Mendoza as its new superintendent.

Mendoza, who has served as interim superintendent since September 2015, previously held posts as the District’s associate superintendent, senior director of student achievement, director of extended educational programs and coordinator of early childhood education.

“Mr. Mendoza is the right choice for Baldwin Park Unified,” Board President Christina Lucero said. “He creates teams that play to people’s strengths and unify everyone behind our goal to provide the highest-quality education for our students.”

Lucero said the Board decided not to conduct a search to fill the post after observing Mendoza over the last five months.

“When you see somebody who has the talent to do the job, someone who knows the community and who respects the community, the students and their team, there’s no reason to look outside,” Lucero said.

Lucero said Mendoza’s inclusive and collaborative approach is evident by his first request to board members: that they publicly announce their expectations for him during an upcoming board meeting so the community can join in holding him accountable.

I bought a Los Angeles Angels t-shirt on Saturday.

I then posted a picture of myself in the Angels t-shirt on Facebook. This picture generated 42 “likes” and 18 comments. Eight of the comments were negative, one person declared that we could no longer be friends.

For the record, I am not an Angels fan. For most of my adult life, I’ve loathed the Angels (which is interesting because in my day job I serve as a minister) and actively rooted against them.

I’ll probably root against them this year as well, but I was surprised by how many true Angels fans there are.

It seems like there are more and more of them.

Is the day coming, or has it already arrived, where Los Angeles is no longer a Dodger town but an Angel town? After all, it is called the City of Angels. ***Did anyone see the Northern Iowa-Texas A&M game on Sunday? Because I didn’t.

While the epic collapse of the Panthers was taking place I was stuck in Phoenix traffic listening to it on the radio. When you spend six hours in traffic nothing sounds good…Not the Beatles, not Bob Dylan, not Bruce Springsteen. All you want after six hours in traffic is to scream. Unless…

All I could think of were the people who heard Orson Welles 1938 broadcast of “War of The Worlds” when a good chunk of the eastern part of the United States really thought we were being invaded by Mars. It was unbelievable, but yet it seemed like it was hap-pening.

Northern Iowa’s meltdown and subsequent Texas A&M rally were unbelievable but it was really happening.

Plugging along at twomiles-per-hour we heard one pass after another being thrown away. One shot after another going down. The end of regulation, the end of the first overtime, and finally the Aggies pulling out the win in double-overtime.

It was a pleasure to be, literally, a captive audience.

There was nothing we could do but listen in amazement.

So I would like to personally like that satellite radio and the Northern Iowa Panthers for helping me and my friend survive a six-hour traffic debacle in Arizona on Sunday night. It was an awfully decent thing for you to do.

The Peterson Principle

I’m hearing a lot of out of Monrovia but nothing is official as of yet. There could even be a hire in place but they’re just waiting for clearance, but then again maybe not. I know you’ve heard this before but I’m hearing we should know something concrete early this week. We’ll see.

Just when we thought all the coaching changes had been filled or were in the process of being filled Diamond Ranch happens.

Why? I don’t know. What I do know is that Panther head coach Jimmy Welker is out after just one year.

Welker followed Mario Gomez who was also out after only one year. When D-Ranch makes its hire for this season it will be its fourth coach in as many years.

It’s an important hire for the Panthers. They haven’t had any stability since Roddy Layton stepped down after an eight year run after the 2013 season.

Layton’s regime included two consecutive CIF title appearances. Layton’s only problem was that Charter Oak was in the same division.

It would seem like a a great gig for somebody.

The Panthers have a great on campus stadium and nice facilities. Heck, when Layton was the coach the Panthers played at Ganesha High for years. Diamond Ranch, which lost to Central Division Champion San Marino, has plenty of talent returning including running back Chase Steward and receivers Trey Green and Carter Henderson.

The key is they have to get somebody to settle in for at least five years or so. One and done may be the rule of thumb in college basketball but when it comes to high school football coaches it doesn’t cut it.

I guess if there is a school for Greg Gano to recapture the glory it would be at a place like Don Lugo – a talented squad that has had some recent success.

But it makes you wonder if Wilson can ever get off the snide? Gano went 4-16 the last two years there and 1-9 in the Valle Vista League.

The Wildcats are 5-25 over the last three years. I mean if Gano couldn’t turn it around can anybody? They need to hire a good energetic coach who brings in his own staff and then leave him alone.

Who wants Bonita? El Monte? Oh yeah and now Diamond Ranch? Heard a big name is interviewing

Arcadia High School quarterback Nico Hillier has committed to UC Davis, Apaches head coach Andrew Policky confirmed Friday.

Last year Hillier completed 109 of 224 passes for 1562 and 17 touchdowns in 10 games. He also rushed for 481 yards and six touchdowns.

The event concluded with a Zumba workout with Jay from Beastin’ Beauties Fit Studio. The crowd cheered

as participants followed her steps and exercised while having fun. It was a wonderful way to conclude the Eggstravaganza event, as it brought the community together to enjoy being happy and healthy for this springtime season.

Future Tires go Spherical

Goodyear has invented a new tire but it doesn’t look like one we are used to seeing. This tire is a round spherical one that uses new technology to go in just about any direction. This tire lets you go side to side and diagonal allowing parallel parking to be a breeze.

This tire and the startups of driver less car companies are really pushing the future of cars. The tire inside consists of many magnets. The magnets create a levitation of the car from the tire creating a smooth ride. This makes it possible for a pleasant drive.

The tire or sphere is called Eagle 360. The design gives

the tires a water proof like tire via centrifugal force.

Good Year’s concept ball tires can pass a bus without changing the orientation of the car, or recover from a skid by moving the tires in four different directions at once to regain control. The biggest problem is that all car companies would have to switch out their engines and use a magnetic levita-

tion system that Good Year calls MagLev. MagLev has no friction and is free of any parts to the tire making for a faster drive. My biggest concerns are what happens when this car drives over a metal bridge or if there is something metal on the road.

If they can fix that problem I’m sure that in the future, we can see these magnetic cars driving spherical tires.

Beatles Tribute band books a venue to perform “Stripped.” Well, not really but without the “boots and suits” which is the trademark of every other Beatles tribute band.

“Britain’s Finest” based in Los Angeles has traveled the world performing as The Beatles in tribute shows with a full theatrical multimedia experience including their own “Ed Sullivan” host. This is a top notch world class band with a true and faithful recreation of a Beatles Concert covering their entire career from 1964 thru 1970. Yet sometime last year, the band which now includes original members

Benjamin Chadwick as Paul, Robert Bielma as George, Luis Renteria as Ringo and recent addition Ruben Amaya as John Lennon, created an idea to book some small bar/club venues and perform a “Stripped” show as a homage to the album “Let it Be Naked.” This is a very loose and sometimes slightly “blue” show, but probably very much in the same vein of what it must have been like to see the original band way back when. These fellas are funny and spontaneous but make no mistake, when they kick in to play the music, these guys play Beatles music like a world-class band. Find them on Facebook and if you happen to be in the Los Angeles area look for their “Stripped” show announcements. It’s guaranteed to make you Twist & Shout.

Welcome to Harry Potter’s Hogsmeade!

On Thursday, April 7, the gates to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter officially open at Universal Studios Hollywood. As guests enter this magical land, they will pass under the sign for the village of Hogsmeade.

One of the first sights inside the gates is the Hogwarts Express locomotive still steaming from its trav-

Snow-covered rooftops, with smoke curling from crooked chimneys, surround the train. Guests can have a souvenir picture taken inside a Hogwarts Express train compartment. A green screen provides a choice of background images including Dementors and Hogwarts Castle.

As they make their way along Hogsmeade’s cobblestone streets, Harry Potter fans can enter a variety of

storefronts. Zonko’s Joke Shop offers novelty items.

Brightly colored Honeydukes is filled with tempting sweets.

Guests can line up at Ollivanders for the chance to be chosen for a wand fitting.

If they want to bypass the wait and choose their own wand, they can do so at the adjacent store. There are two main types of wands for purchase- interactive and replica. Interactive wands allow their owners to cast spells outside 11 designated shop windows and make magic happen. The replica wands are just like the ones used in the Harry Potter films by characters both heroic and evil, such as Harry, Hermione, Draco, and Dumbledore.

At the nearby Owl Post, mail can be sent with a special Hogsmeade postmark.

Guests can use Universal’s EZ Rez online system to purchase park entry in advance. Tickets booked for April 7 and after offer the advantage of admission to The Wizarding World one hour before Universal’s regular opening time.

The rest of the cast is great with people like Lance Reddick (The Wire) and Amy Aquino (White Oleander) and of course Titus Welliver who plays “Bosch.” Michael Connelly is a writer for the show as he wrote the novels, but we also have veteran writer Eric Overmyer. He is known for “The Wire” and “Law and Order.” I do see a lot of the actors from “The Wire” in this show. After all, Overmyer developed this series, but he didn’t take it to HBO, instead went with new comer Amazon.

My favorite aspect about the show is that it’s located in LA specifically in the Hollywood division, but the show travels to many locations including Las Vegas.

The last thing I want to point out is the intro to the show.

It’s a basic intro that uses 2 of the same clips, but flips one over to create this cool effect that show one world right side up while the other is upside down. What a great

interpretation of Bosch’s life by this simple effect.

If you are looking for new crime drama with something different than what you see on regular TV, turn off the

TV and turn on your computer to amazon and watch “Bosch.” Grade A. Rated MA for Strong Language, Violence, and Nudity
