Reading Rocks at Maxson Elementary School by Michele Earle El Monte

Maxson Elementary School’s students and staff channeled their inner rock stars at the school’s Rock and Read themed Read Aloud Day. Kicking off the day with a rockin’ song was musician, Jim Roberts who led the students singing “I Love Reading Books” - a rewrite of Joan Jett and Blackhearts’ famous “I Love

Rock and Roll” song. The campus was adorned with guitars, musical notes and rock n’ roll artwork. There was even group of paparazzi who enthusiastically welcomed each guest reader as they made their way down the red carpet. Maxson’s guest readers included students in Mt. View High School’s Teacher

Preparation Academy (TPA) who brought along The Cat in the Hat and Thing One and Thing Two to encourage the students to read. The school also welcomed Michelle Rodriguez, a reporter for channel 62’s Estrella News who was happy share her love of reading and to report on the enthusiastic readers at Maxson School.

Several other guest readers made their way down the red carpet and into class-

rooms to inspire Maxson’s preschool through 6th grade students to read.

El Monte Youth Take Part in INSPIRE Day-Long Leadership Conferences

Continuing in the tradition of supporting young people by presenting positive role models for success, the City of El Monte hosted INSPIRE: A Young Women’s Leadership Conference and the El Monte Union High School District hosted INSPIRE for young men. These day-long conferences are designed to establish mentoring relationships and to provide these young men and women resources and tools for personal development in confidence, relationships, and finances.
