Reading Rocks at Maxson Elementary School

Maxson Elementary School’s students and staff channeled their inner rock stars at the school’s Rock and Read themed Read Aloud Day. Kicking off the day with a rockin’ song was musician, Jim Roberts who led the students singing “I Love Reading Books” - a rewrite of Joan Jett and Blackhearts’ famous “I Love

Rock and Roll” song.

The campus was adorned with guitars, musical notes and rock n’ roll artwork.

There was even group of paparazzi who enthusiastically welcomed each guest reader as they made their way down the red carpet.

Maxson’s guest readers included students in Mt. View High School’s Teacher

Preparation Academy (TPA) who brought along The Cat in the Hat and Thing One and Thing Two to encourage the students to read. The school also welcomed Michelle Rodriguez, a reporter for channel 62’s Estrella News who was happy share her love of reading and to report on the enthusiastic readers at Maxson School.

rooms to inspire Maxson’s preschool through 6th grade students to read.

Continuing in the tradition of supporting young people by presenting positive role models for success, the City of El Monte hosted INSPIRE: A Young Women’s Leadership Conference and the El Monte Union High School District hosted INSPIRE for young men.

These day-long conferences are designed to establish mentoring relationships and to provide these young men and women resources and tools for personal development in confidence, relationships, and finances.

Student Corner Leonardo DiCaprio Believe me when I say that people are still stoked about the 88th Anniversary of the Oscars, WOW where has the time flown! The moment that we all had been anticipating finally arrived.

February 28, 2016 was a legendary night for many people, but most of all Leonardo DiCaprio. It took six nominations for Leo to finally win an Oscar. He was first nominated in 1994 for best actor in a supporting role in the movie, “What’s Eating Gilbert’s Grape.”

Then in 2005 he was nominated for best actor in a

leading role for the movie, “The Aviator.” Two years later he was nominated for best actor in a leading role once again, but for the 2007 film, “Blood Diamond.” In 2014 he was nominated not once, but twice for “The Wolf of Wall Street,” one nomination for best picture and the other nomination was for best actor in a leading role. Finally at this year’s Oscars, Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar for best actor in a leading role for the movie, “The Revenant.”

A huge congratulations to Leo. He has really come a long way. Movie goers have seen him grow since his first Oscar nomination at the age of 20. However, his loss in 1994 didn’t stop him from doing what he loved.

Instead he kept on going and his dedication to acting led him to many more Oscar nominations. Way to go Leo! Your hard work and dedication to your craft has really paid off. Movie goers plan to see many more winning Oscars from him in the future!

People start drinking for different reasons; For some it may happen during the special seasons.

Or some friends talking all of us into drinking beer; Then it leads to hard stuff, I want to make clear.

It’s one of the most innocent things that we’ve done; And after all we’re just having a whole lot of fun.

Most of us don’t even know what alcohol can do; But one of the worst things is that it can kill you.

I do believe most of us find alcohol at a young age; When we think we know it all in the Seventh Grade.

It can become the most important thing in our life; It’s a family disease that will separate a man and wife.

When we start drinking, a cucumber is what we’re like; And sometimes we often can get higher than a kite.

When we drink more and more we cross over the line; The devil takes over and starts messing with our mind.

Some become an alcoholic whether they like it or not; Often drink and drive, hoping they won’t get caught.

If they continue on drinking then it would be a shame; And the sad part is that only ourselves are to blame.

From a cucumber to a pickle is what they’ve become; For all the rest of their life they will remain one.

Quit drinking, for the alcoholic it is hard, they must try.

If drinking is continued on, then they will certainly die.

Parent Workshops Offer Arroyo Speech and Debate Heads to State Answers

Teen depression may be gaining greater exposure nationally, but in the 9,000-student El Monte Union High School District a large number of parents are either reluctant or unable to face the issue, says Rita Donato, the district’s Director of Special Education.

“It’s not a topic that parents find friendly. There’s a stigma attached to it,” Donato said. So, often “when you ask a parent about depression, either they’re in denial or they don’t have the technical know-how” to even reach out to authorities if their child shows signs of the condition.

The 2015-2016 California Healthy Kids Survey, a comprehensive study of student behavior, experiences and attitudes relating to school, health, well–being, bullying, violence and the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, showed that out of nearly 2,800 EMUHSD 9th and 11th graders included in the survey, an estimated 30 percent suffered from chronic feelings of sadness and hopelessness.

The statistics also revealed about 21 percent of the survey’s participants identified themselves as current alcohol or drug users and about 15 percent said they

were suicidal.

The district, wanting to assure families they need not face their children’s problems alone, has planned a series of parent workshops aimed at explaining the stages and signs of depression and also introduce attendees to Foothill Family, a local intervention services provider that has agreed to offer treatment options to students and their families, even if they don’t have formal clinical referrals.

The next parent workshop, “Recognizing Depression and Anxiety in Your Teen,” will be held Monday, Mar. 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Rosemead High School, where Vietnamese interpretation will be available.

Other workshops are scheduled for April 4, from 6:30-8 p.m. at South El Monte High School, and April 18, from 6:30-8 p.m., at Mountain View High.

Aspiring Teachers at Mountain View Win County Scholarships

Neither Jeanette Polanco nor Rose Yerena knew how important teaching would become for them, until they entered Mountain View High School’s specialized training program for budding instructors.

“The Teacher Preparation Academy I am in helped me decide to be a teacher,” Yerena told the Mid Valley News. “In the academy I get to tutor children and I really enjoy it...this is the dream job I want.”

Polanco, on the other hand, was simply looking for a way to serve her community through tutoring when she signed up for the school’s academy. Her love of teaching, like Yerena’s, blossomed through the experience.

Polanco and Yerena are two of four El Monte Union High School District seniors, all aspiring teachers, who will each receive a $500 Shelly SpiegelColeman Scholarship from the Los Angeles County Bilingual Directors’ Association

March 19.

The group annually hands out student scholarships and recognizes educators from throughout the county for their achievements in promoting bilingual education. The honored EMUHSD educators this year include Ana Ieng, who has taught English Learner Development for over 10 years; Patricia Anguiano, the community liaison at El Monte High School; and parent volunteers Maria Guadalupe Alfaro and Ofelia Guerrero, who have individually contributed to a variety of district programs, especially outreach efforts directed at English Learner families.

The scholarship winners, who include Kassandra Silva and Kimberly Caal-Garcia, also Mountain View students, were selected for their academic successes and involvement in bilingual instruction, as well as service to their communities.

Silva said her interest in teaching young children, particularly those in kindergarten and first grade, took shape while she was in 5th grade and observed how her older female first cousin, or prima hermana, as she says in her native Spanish, advocated for others through her work as a personal injury attorney.

When you hear the word “debate,” visions of highpowered, arguing attorneys likely dance through your head, along with -- considering the current political season -- fiery back-andfourths between presidential candidates in front of equally-fiery crowds.

But, to Terry Colvin, the longtime journalist-turnedcoach of Arroyo High School’s speech and debate team, the only such squad in the El Monte Union High School District, the word is synonymous with empowerment.

Learning how to speak and debate well, let alone compete, allows young people “to come out of high school with a fairly good understanding of the world around them,” said Colvin, adding his students learn they can they can compete equally with “kids from more upperincome communities,” and develop a greater belief in themselves.

High school debate competition includes five different events: Policy; Public Forum; the one-on-one Lincoln-Douglas Debate, dubbed for the famous series of political debates between the future President Abraham Lincoln and Illinois

Sen. Stephen Douglas; Parliamentary Style; and Congressional Debate.

There are also several non-debate speech events, such as Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Extemporaneous and Impromptu Speaking.

Five Arroyo debaters are set to compete in the Congressional event at the statewide California High School Speech Association Tournament, April 15-17 at Mission College in Santa Clara. They are sophomores Amaranta Hernandez and Savannah Landaverry and seniors Annie Xu, Henry Hyunh and Elaine Hwang -the latter two having ranked so high at regular tournaments in the fall and spring, they automatically earned spots at the state competition without needing to qualify.

Eric Doan and Kirin Heftye, both seniors, will also compete at the state tournament in duo oral interpretation.

Hernandez asserts debating “teaches you to think more critically” and see how “everything is correlated.”

Besides that, debating gives her “an outlet where I can voice my passions,” she said. “I love it.”

‘Time Jockey’ Mining for Beans

Making a Living ….

The evolution of gold mining was in full evidence during the California Gold Rush. In 1848, the first significant gold mining efforts started in the foothills of the Sierra. Everyone wanted to get rich and gold prospectors were eager to work hard to try and achieve their dreams. Just over 1,000 miners spread out over 150 miles in the Sierra foothills. The miners primarily performed stream mining and panning, and the results were startling.

Over 10 million dollars of gold was pulled out of the region by the 48ers and such success brought new prospectors to the region starting in 1849.

But by the time the 49ers arrived, the 48ers pretty much had a head start on gold mining operations and techniques. At the end of 1849, there are 50,000 miners in the foothills and by 1855 the number had increased to 120,000.

But the single miner had all but disappeared. Miners formed groups to take advantage of new mining technologies. Groups become corporations with more miners making less than ever and corporations earning the bulk of any gold uncovered. The miners are barely able to scratch out a living and become substance miners, living on minimal amounts of food only. Some of these miners were from South America and traveled thousands of miles to reach California, fleeing places which were ravaged by diseases and corrupt governments all in search of golden riches.

But instead of becoming rich with their own mining claims, the new gold miners instead become employees of the new large gold extraction companies.

The dreams of discovering gold riches gives way to “mining for beans” and the life of a gold miner takes on a less glossy role than ever before….. San Gabriel Adobes ….. Today, two Mission era adobes still exist in the City of San Gabriel and have stood the test of time. The La Casa Vieja de Lopez Adobe is located at 330 S. Santa Anita Avenue with the construction material and design the same as used by other Mission buildings in the same location. In the 1930’s it was redecorated by Dona Maria Lopez de Lowther

whose family occupied the adobe for many years.

Also, less than a half mile away is the Vigare Adobe located on South Ramona Avenue. The adobe was the residence of Dona Luz Vigare, whose great-grandfather was a Spanish soldier who was assigned to duty at the Mission. High walls surround the adobe and it too was remodeled during the 1930’s with an adobe cocina removed and instead a full porch was added.

These two adobes still exist today in San Gabriel and even though they are not available for public viewing, one can still glimpse at these timeless buildings and imagine their original appearance during their Mission days….

Kiwanis Honors Oak Avenue Intermediate School Students

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City recognized two outstanding students from Oak Avenue Intermediate School. Accompanying the students was Mrs. Marta Bourjeili .

Victoria is 13 years old and in Mrs. Ferguson’s class. She has a younger sister and enjoys volleyball, violin, and listening to music. Victoria said, “The best things about Oak Avenue are the friendly environment that produces a great place to learn, it’s like a second family to me and it feels safe to be there, science this year has made me more independent and

I have learned to solve problems a lot better.”

The best thing that ever happened was having the opportunity to meet my best friends. If she could change one thing, it would be to create a policy which forbids grocery stores and restaurants from throwing out fresh food. If she could build one thing, it would be a temporary getaway home for kids who feel physically or emotionally abused at home. Personal goals are to manage her time wisely, take things more seriously, and doing what she can to make other peoples lives easier.

Abel is 14 years old and in Mrs. Bourjeili’s class. He has two older sisters and enjoys soccer, exploring, and editing photos and video.

Abel said, “The best things about Oak Avenue are the staff, band, and the young talented students.” The best thing that ever happened was moving to Temple City where he learned so much that made him a better student. If he could change one thing, it would be to end racism, discrimination, and put down for their race or skin color. Personal goals are to find cures and enhanced treatments for deadly diseases, become

SGMHS Senior Wins Bookmark Contest

Qianhui (Crystal) Lin is a senior at San Gabriel Mission High School. Her dream is to become an Anime artist and illustrator. She entered the 2015 Bookmark/ Pentel Arts Contest for students in grades K-12. This is their 35th year in judging bookmarks on “originality, design, and reproducibility.

There were over 10,000 submissions and each district in L. A. County chose contest winners. Crystal was part of District 5, and one of the 6 winning bookmarks.

Crystal was born in Zhejiang, China which is close to Shanghai. She has been in the U.S. since 2012. Her interest in drawing began when she was only 3 years

old. Crystal loved to draw all kinds of fish. So her mother decided to enroll her in art classes. Crystal’s art has been greatly influenced by one of her favorite artists, Hoshino Katsura, a Japanese Anime artist who draws the D. Gray-man comic. This Gothic-style of art is what Crystal loves to draw. She explains that some of the scenes are strange and mix in fantasy. Crystal thinks that some people think she is a dark person because she likes to draw Gothic scenes, including cats and vampire bats. But she says, “I am just a quiet person.” She credits her art teachers with

The Third Annual Pasadena Film Festival was held on March 10th at the Pasadena Speakeasy with a Great Gatsby Theme. More than 15 countries and 100 movies were shown in many genres.

Pasadena International Film Festival was founded in 2013 by Jessica Hardin and Marco Neves. Both are residents of Pasadena and have worked in the industry. This is the only festival in Pasadena and it brings people all over the world to showcase their films.

Best Actress went to

Mandy Moody for the film “Birthday,” a film about marine who gets severely injured after rehab returns home faces the harsh times ahead. Best Actor went to Rico E. Anderson for the film “Dreams my Master,” a story of two fathers who struggle to give their kids the lives they want them to have. Best director when to Dax Phelan for the film “Jasmin,” a film about a man whose wife gets murdered and starts to lose everything because of his obsession with his wife’s murderer.

Mr. Christopher Landinguin “helped me come up with ideas for my 2D art projects.” Mrs. Eugenia Heilweil “taught me very interesting techniques, including small illusions, pencil and charcoal techniques, watercolor techniques, pastels as well as composition and still life” which have greatly enhanced her artistic skills.

According to Mrs. Heilweil, “The first time I saw Chrystal Lin’s art, I told myself, ‘What a natural talent. We have an amazing talent on our hands!’ Using three main colors: red, black and white, sometimes combined

with yellow and blue, which enrich the already luxurious details of the paintings, Chrystal’s gothic style fantasy paintings become alive.

The two color checkmate pattern repetitions of her paintings are rich in detail, which create the specific atmosphere and the drama of her gothic like stories.

It’s almost a novel whose finale doesn’t quite come, and leaves you anticipating more.”

Upon graduation, Crystal wants to attend art school.

She has applied to the Otis College of Art and Design, California College of the Arts, and the California Institute of the Arts. This talented senior is well on her way to realizing her dream.

Javabots Scored Big at the Regional Championships

On last weekend in February, forty-eight qualifying FTC teams from the Los Angeles Region came together at Monrovia High School to compete at the regional championships. Among those teams, eight teams advanced to the FTC West Super Regional championship, including the event Inspire Award Winner, Team

on Autodesk Inventor, and configure electronics.

First Tech Challenge (FTC) is a branch of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics programs. This rigorous program encourages high school students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math by having

championships, Javabots’ robot “Caffeine” was able to climb the mountain and hang on the top bar at the end of most competition matches.

Since the season kickoff in September, Javabots has competed in three competitions and hosted one competition for other teams to compete at. In addition to

Team 5218 Javabots is an all-girls team from Pasadena, California with eight members that come from different schools in the Los Angeles area. While competing and building the robot, the members of Javabots learn to program in Java, hold outreaches, operate power tools, model

teams build a robot every year according to the season’s challenge. This year, FTC challenges teams to build a robot that can climb a 5-foot mountain while maneuvering around debris on the floor. The robot must be able to endure driving from a 30° to 50° incline while trying to get up the mountain. In the regional

ROSS Dress For Less Celebrates Grand Opening at the Santa Fe Trail Plaza

Junior department store giant, Ross Dress For Less, celebrated its Grand Opening at the Santa Fe Trail Plaza in the City of El Monte on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

This is the first Ross Dress For Less retail store to open in the City of El Monte, providing residents with brand name fashions for the family and home at steeply discounted prices. The opening of Ross Dress For Less at the Santa Fe Trail Plaza has been long anticipated and is a welcomed retailer in the City of El Monte.

The Grand Opening on Saturday, March 5, 2016 began at 7:15 a.m., followed by the ribbon cutting ceremony at 7:45 a.m. and the store opening at 8:00 a.m.

There were an estimated 300+ patrons waiting in line for Ross to open their doors at 8:00am. There were approximately 60 people in attendance for the event itself, and included El Monte City employees, El Monte City officials and Ed Grush General Contractor employees. Guests enjoyed refreshments provided by the City of El Monte.

Speakers at the event included Andre Quintero, Mayor; Jesus M. Gomez, City Manager; Minh Thai, Economic Development Director; Juventino “J” Gomez, Councilman; Hubert Chim, Area Manager for Ross Dress For Less; and Mark Schurgin, President of The Festival Companies.

Both The Festival Companies and Ross Dress for Less were presented with a “Certificate of Recognition” by the City of El Monte.

El Monte Resident Runs in the 31st City of Los Angeles Marathon

Vincent McMillen, an El Monte resident for the past 42 years, who worked as a business owner in The City of El Monte for 54 years, completed his 31st City of Los Angeles Marathon on February 14, 2016. Vincent is one of the 153 Legacy Runners who have completed every City of Los Angeles Marathon since it started in 1968. In keeping with our status of the Los Angeles Marathon being one of the top ten Marathons, we again had runners from all 50 states and over 50 countries around the world. We are the only Marathon in the world with over 100 Legacy Runners.

The City of Los Angeles Marathon from 1986 to 2015 has had a total of 625,257 entrants and 503,435 total finishers. There were over 3,200 Students Run LA participants this year. There were runners raising funds to support the 103 Official Charities.

The Skechers Performance 2016 LA Marathon #31 had 153 Legacy Runners finish the race. There were 19 women and 134 men Legacy

Runners who crossed the Finish Line. One woman and two men completed in wheelchairs. There are three couples who have finished together at all 31 LA Marathons. It was a special LA Marathon for the three Legacy Couples and all the 20,609 Finishers because it was held on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2016.

173 Legacy Runners finished the 30th running of the LA MArathon on March 15, 2015. We have run each and every LA Marathon since the race began in March of

1986.

178 Legacy Runners finished the 29th running of the LA Marathon in 2014.

366 Legacy Runners finished the 15th running of the LA Marathon in 2000.

543 Legacy Runners (who were then called “Tenners”) completed the 10th LA Marathon in 1995.

10,787 entrants in the First LA Marathon in 1986 had no idea what would be a Legacy Runner.

Mt. Sierra Celebrates Grand Opening

With exalted arms, George Zhao proclaimed, “This is my dream!” before the crowd of bustling attendees.

The Chairman of the Board for Mt. Sierra College could not be more gracious to have community support for his confirmed vision.

On March 9, Mt. Sierra College celebrated the Grand Opening of its brand new campus at 800 Royal Oaks Dr. in Monrovia. With Arcadia, Monrovia, and Duarte Chambers present, a ribbon was extended in unity and then cut by three pairs of scissors. All were welcomed to the innovative and transporting place of higher education by the Mt. Sierra administration and students. Chamber representatives each stepped forward offering their certificates of recognition and their well wishes for a future of only the best success. Arcadia Chamber CEO Karen Mac Nair and President-Elect Vicki Knight of Century Rooter presented to George

Zhao the signature new member plaque embossed with the peacock as well as a certificate of recognition.

Arcadia Council Member Sho Tay also presented a certificate of recognition on behalf of the City of Arcadia.

Focusing on the technological enterprise as the core of its curriculum, the dexterous surroundings of stacked, rectangular chandeliers and 3-D cinematography to promote students’ achievements, reflects the heeding mission of the college.

Students choose Mt. Sierra to gather an expertise in design, media arts, business, and technology but also graduate as leaders ready to impact their creative skills upon their chosen industry.

Eyes inadvertently looked upwards and around as compliments were doled to the administration and staff for the impressive building that materializes the work of its students across the media panels.

The El Monte Union High School District organized the INSPIRE: A Young Men’s Leadership Conference, headed by the efforts of Board Member Ricardo Padilla. Using the success-

ful model established by the existing INSPIRE women’s conference, approximately one hundred young men aged 14-18 took part in three workshops designed to strengthen their financial acumen, develop and hone professional etiquette, and improve their overall health and wellness.

The keynote speaker for the event was Major Jim Dollard, USMC, a highly decorated veteran who has spent part of his career speaking at similar conferences around the country.

Immediately following the event, the City partnered with the GramMARCH Challenge at Arceo Park.

Founded by Los Angeles area teacher Heather Shotke, the GramMARCH Challenge is a month-long initiative in which participants are encouraged to employ

El Monte High School alum Guillermo Calvillo recently passed away at the age of 51.

Memo, as we called him, was my friend through most of my high school years and his recent passing uncorked a flow of memories that I thought had been forgotten.

Memo played basketball and was a three-year star singles player on the El Monte bad-minton team.

He had a great smile and a good heart, and I wish I could take the next 600 words of this column to talk about him.

Truth is, although he was one of my best friends in high school, I’d seen him twice in the last thirty years.

I last spoke to him twenty years ago. We didn’t have a falling out, we didn’t have a disagreement, we didn’t have any issues…we had our lives.

Our lives went in different directions and nothing could have changed it. It could not have been prevented.

So the lesson to take from this is an old one…appreciate today. You don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring.

This applies to life, family, sports, you name it. Everything, whether you realize it or not, is fleeting.

Appreciate all the periods of your life, the times you go through, the things you experi-ence (good & bad) because before you know it everything changes and you’ll wonder where it (everyone) all went. ***Excited about going to

APU Women Advance to 2nd Round

Azusa Pacific survived a late rally and went on to beat Montana State Billings 83-75 Friday night in the first round of the NCAA West Regional at Felix Event Center.

The Cougars led comfortably late in the game but MS-Billings continued to foul and had a couple of steals to cut the lead to 7975 with 17 seconds left. But the Cougars responded with a pair of free throws and

eventually held on for the eight point victory.

Azusa Pacific’s balanced attack was too much for MSB’s one woman show.

Kelly Hardeman and Allison Greene had 17, Cydnie Jones scored 16 and Maggie Dumphy and Miriam Zabinsky had 13 and 11 respectively. For Montana State Billings, Alisha Breen poured in 31. Kylee Kane added 14 for MSB, but it was Breen who was the go

Montana State Billings led early 15-8 but a 14-0 run by the Cougars erased the deficit and gave APU a 19-15 lead. The Cougars led 21-17 after one. They increased the advantage to 39-29 at the half. MSB cut the lead to seven at the end of three and looked to be dead with just over a minute left before making one last run.

“I don’t think our girls realized how desperately Montana State wanted to continue playing. They’re a great team and they fought all the way to the end,” said APU HC T.J. Hardeman.

“We didn’t match their intensity at the end, but I think we learned a lesson tonight.”

Hardeman was pleased with the Cougars balanced scoring attack.

“That’s kind of what we’ve done all year. Different teams try to take away different things and we know that if you’re open in this particular area we want you to shoot it. We expect you to shoot it,” Hardeman said.

Each team shot 46 percent from the field, but the Cougars out-rebounded Montana State Billings 43-28. ***On Saturday night, in the second round, the Lady Cougars fell to UC San Diego, 87-77, at home in the Felix Events Center.

APU led, 38-30 at halftime, but things went south in the third quarter. The Tritons outscored the Lady Cougars 35-18 and never looked back.

So far, so good for Temple City and Paul Kosanovich as the Rams remain undefeated.

El Monte National Little League Opening Day

March 12th, 2016 marked the opening day for the youth of El Monte National Little League. A chance of rain didn’t deter over a hundred little leaguers on more than 20 teams from breaking out their bats and stepping out on the diamond during the opening day of El Monte National Little League in El Monte to start the threemonth league season. The league consists of T-Ballers to Majors.

Parents and volunteers were on the field setting up before 8am. This day takes months of planning for the EMNLL Board of Direc-

tors. Each team from each division were given a booth to man and operate where they had to sell food, candy, hold games and drinks. This is a way for the league to raise money as well as the individual teams get to keep a portion of the proceeds to support the kids.

There were some special guests at the event El Monte City Council members were present for the opening ceremonies, to give all the kids “High-Fives” as they parade around the field. Mayor Pro Tem Victoria Martinez, Council Member Juventino “J” Gomez, Council Mem-

The Peterson Principle

Right out of the gate it’s a great hire for Duarte.

James Heggins is a proven winner and has experience.

He’s also the type of guy than can attract the local athlete that might be on the fence between Monrovia and Duarte to join the Falcons.

Heggins definitely has his work cut out for him.

Duarte went 3-17 over the last two seasons under Travis Brown. The Falcons looked to be turning a corner in 2013 under Jason Martin when they advanced to the second round of the playoffs, but Martin left to pursue college opportunities and it’s been a struggle ever since.

The Heggins hire made sense. Former Northview/ Los Altos Head Coach Jim Arellanes also worked with Heggins as an assistant coach a few years ago at Baldwin Park, and is now part of the administration at Duarte. He knew what he was getting in Heggins and played a part in landing him.

Does Duarte have anybody back? Well, yes. The Falcons do return quarterback Devon Hemsley, only a sophomore in 2015, from a squad that was laden with underclassmen.

Although Heggins to Duarte is great for the Falcon faithful, it does make you wonder about the state of the Baldwin Park program. The Braves are now seeking their third different head coach in as many years. Still no word as to who is taking the job and no word on anybody that wants it.

Bonita had their guy, then didn’t have their guy when the administration didn’t particularly like his choice of staff. So anybody that was in the running before is now apparently back in.

Ibis Aguilar?

So there was a certain Valle Vista League coach who left for a state up north and is now back and applying for head coaching positions. He didn’t get Bonita and now is out of the mix at Monrovia according to sources. He would be a great hire for somebody.

Speaking of Monrovia, and aren’t we always? One has to wonder which way it will turn now. Do the Wildcats stay in house and hire a former assistant or continue to search outside and land a big name? Interviews were concluded last week and we’re hearing several “big names” thrown around, but nothing concrete as of yet. My guess is that it will be an outside as-

Zootopia’s Advance Fur Tech

“Zootopia” is movie about animals in a world were humans don’t exist. The world is amazing and the city in which they all live in is spectacular. Not only did it take months to create the city, but it took months to create each individual character. Each character is an animal and most animals have fur. Disney Animation had to create these furs using special software they developed to create strands of hair. The Disney team called their software iGroom, a fur tool to say, that helped manage 2.5 million hairs on the leading bunny, Judy Hopps.

It creates the realistic look to all the animals, a gerbil has 480,000 hairs in comparison to Elsa from Disney’s Frozen, who had 400,000 strands of hair. The software

can create dirty hair, puffy hair, and wetness. Before the software was created, it took hours of rendering to achieve. So what took months for Disney to create, would have taken years to achieve before.

The environments around these movies are more realistic. The films are not like before where the background was more of a painting. If wind blows through, all the plants would move, including the character’s

hair. The environment tool was crafted on Bonsai, an environment tool that helped generate many variations of a rainforest.

Danzing Candy Out-Paces Mor Spirit

Bob Baffert’s Mor Spirit went into Saturday’s San Felipe Stakes as the fan favorite. However, it was Danzing Candy who took home the win, his third straight.

Ridden by Mike Smith and trained by Clifford Sise, Jr., Danzing Candy took the lead on the first turn. Mor Spirit, never one to lead the pack, dropped to second to last on the back side of the track. Coming around the final turn, Mor Spirit had a lot of ground to make up and gamely tried. But, he couldn’t reach Danzing Candy in time and took second. Exaggerator, from the

Desormeaux brothers’ team, was third after pressuring Danzing Candy on the final turn. The San Felipe was Danzing Candy’s first stakes race. He’s next headed to April 9’s Santa Anita Derby.

Other racing news: David Hofmans’ Melatonin jumped up in class and took home the $1million Santa Anita Handicap in a wire to wire win.

Grand Slam Champion American Pharoah is expected to become a father next January after successfully breeding with Untouched Talent (dam to stakes winner Bodemeister).

Protecting and Serving in “Zootopia”

In theory, being a pioneer sounds glamorous – entering new territory, leading the way, and expanding opportunities. Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) is a rabbit who wants to pursue her dream of being a police officer in Zootopia, a big city “utopia” filled with both prey and predator animals who get along. But, when she successfully becomes the first mammal to join the Zootopia Police Department (ZPD), Chief Bogo (Idris Elba) doesn’t want a rabbit on his team. Instead of including her in the investigation of the disappearance of 14 predators, Judy is assigned parking enforcement.

Rather than be discouraged,

she decides to meet double her quota of parking tickets to prove herself. During her first day of rounds, Judy is hustled by fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). The two exchange words based on long-held stereotypes and hope to never see each other again.

But, it turns out Nick was present in the vicinity of one of the kidnappings. When the chief grudgingly gives Judy 48 hours to investigate the disappearance, Judy hustles Nick to get his help. They team up to look into the mystery in neighborhoods such as snowy Tundratown and the corner of Tujunga and Vine in the Rain Forest District. The

challenge for Judy and Nick is not just solving the crime, but also seeing if they can overcome their mistrust of each other.

co-director Jared Bush have created a film that appeals to both kids and adults. The animal characters (which are all wild- no domesticated cats or dogs here) are varied and appealing. The humor throws in references to “The Godfather,” pokes fun at Disney’s own films including “Frozen,” staffs the DMV with sloths, and has a yak (Tommy Chong) manning the front desk of a “naturalist” camp. Shakira provides the vocals for singer Gazelle and her two songs add a lively pop vibe.

Current issues of bullying, intolerance and profiling are all addressed in a positive manner without being overbearing.

The level of detail through-

out the film is impressive.

The writers included six distinct neighborhoods and 64 animal species for the Disney team to bring to the screen. The animators researched animal behavior both locally at the Los Angeles Zoo and on a two-week trip to Kenya, Africa. From the twitches of Judy’s nose, to the athleticism of a jaguar, to buildings properly scaled for animals ranging in size from shrews to elephants, the team has created visual images that complement the storytelling.

“10 Cloverfield Lane” was directed by Dan Trachtenberg who is having his directorial debut. Josh Campbell is one of three writers. He is a newcomer to the writing game as well as Matthew Stuecken. Damien Chazelle is the known writer of the group. Chazelle is best known for “Whiplash” and “The Last Exorcism Part 2.” The film is a Bad Robot Production and it is produced by J.J. Abrams, who is recently known for “Star Wars Episode VII.” After surviving a car accident, Michelle wakes up to find herself in an underground bunker with two men, Howard (John Goodman) and Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.). Howard tells

her that a massive chemical attack has rendered the air unbreathable and their only hope of survival is to remain inside.
