(Active Recovery Center) ARC of Hope Program Job description

Job Title: Peer Support Specialist Reports To: Program Director FLSA Status: Salary/Grant Funded Position Opening Date: June 15, 2020 Closing Date: June 29, 2020 Job Summary: The Peer Support Specialist is a vital team member of the ARC of Hope program. This person will intervene to provide emotional and social support, active listening skills for providing non-judgmental opinions, sharing experiences and navigation of health resources to help others to gain and or sustain recovery from an active substance use disorder. Under the supervision of the ARC of Hope staff, the Peer Support Specialist will be responsible to assist individuals who are struggling with substance abuse to engage in treatment, serve as an advocate, offer support, coordinate services, to connect the individual to treatment and support groups, provide education, and participate in outreach events. The Peer Support Specialist will work with the individual to remove personal and environmental obstacles to access substance abuse treatment services. The Peer Support Specialist will demonstrate effective communication skills and have fluent computer skills using MS Word and an application to create a database to track case management. The Peer Support Specialist will demonstrate sobriety for a period of no less than 2 years. The ARC of Hope Program is headquartered at Greater New Hope Church and Ministries, Preston, MD. A segment of the program includes a faith-based treatment and recovery program modeled after the Celebrate Recovery program. Job Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited) • Provide one on one services for everyone • Provide education to the individual about addiction, treatment services and recovery strategies • Advocate for the individual to obtain services • Knowledgeable about available local community resources • Arrange or provide transportation for individuals to treatment programs • Network and develop professional working relationships with partner agencies • Assist the individual in identifying their goals (motivating clients) • Help develop and support relapse prevention plan • Plan to attend 6 community outreach events to bring awareness and education to the community (annually) • Respects and maintains professional boundaries and confidentially


Always represent the ARC of Hope in a positive and professional manner in the community • Create, organize, and maintain case files and statistical information in a confidential manner • Must be familiar with the HIPAA laws/regulations • Attend training as opportunities are provided • Develop Assessment Form for Intake process • May require some traveling • Perform all other duties as assigned Qualifications: • Some college courses preferred, but not required • Must have at minimum a High School diploma or equivalent • Must have at least 2 years of sustained and successful substance recovery • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record • Preferred prior experience working with substance use disorders clients • Preferred prior experience working with support groups and treatment programs • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills • Ability to communicate satisfactorily in both written and oral form This is a grant funded position for 1 year.
