NEIL WARNOCK Welcome to Barnsley this evening – the best club I played at in my career. I think I scored double figures that year, never to be heard of before for a winger… a brainless flying winger, or so I was told.

It’s always nice to play Barnsley, a super family club. I was so pleased for them when they survived last year. I found myself jumping up when everyone was telling me because it’s a great achievement for clubs to maintain their place in the Championship, especially when they have started so well and had so much catching up to do.

I was pleased for their manager Gerhard Struber, and I’d like to welcome him and his staff, and I’m sure we’ll catch up after the game.

It’ll be good this evening. There’s quite a few players with something to prove to me, who have all been doing really well in pre-season, and this gives them an opportunity. I’m sure Barnsley will be stronger with their team from the weekend, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be weaker. It means the lads have to step up and show us what they can do.

Awaiting the winners is a trip to Chelsea. Sadly, I can’t say a “lucrative” trip to Chelsea because no fans will be allowed in and so there’s no potential for a full house. It’s a long trip to Stamford Bridge in midweek but I’m sure both teams will be doing their best to get in the hat.

With Chelsea possibly being on the Wednesday the fixtures would

once again be chaotic for us if we get through with the game being closely followed by a trip to QPR on the Saturday. We’ve also got a Tuesday trip to Bristol City followed by a weekend game at Cardiff after the international break so I suppose it’s payback time for me from the FA for over the years!

But we’ll look forward to what we’ve got and we’ll crack on.

Pledge To Renew ballot complete

The club has now completed its initial ballot for the Pledge To Renew Season Card scheme.

Fans will be made aware if they have been successful or not via email (or by post for those fans who we do not have email addresses for). Fans are advised to check their junk mail or allow for the post to be delivered.

The club will now continue to review and revise our capacity levels in accordance with government guidance and any further spaces will be balloted for among fans who opt to remain in the Pledge To Renew scheme.

The deadline for fans who don’t want to remain in the Pledge To Renew scheme and wish to claim a refund is 4pm on Wednesday 16 September via ticket@mfc.co.uk The Season Card Terms and Conditions for 2020/21 have been updated and fans are required to read these by clicking here.

MARCUS BETTINELLI

Marcus Bettinelli says Neil Warnock was “instrumental” in convincing him to make a season-long loan move from Fulham.

The goalkeeper became Boro’s second summer signing on Thursday, and will wear the number 1 shirt this season.

“It didn’t take me too long to come to a decision,” he said.

“I know what a massive club it is, and a great fanbase, what you guys have done in your history is amazing.

“Neil [Warnock] has been instrumental in getting me up here as well. I came up and spoke with him over dinner, he’s a manager that I’ve heard so many great things about from players and staff – everyone I’ve spoken to has said you’ll love playing under him. He’s such a likeable character and he’s got so many stories, so it’s a privilege to work under him.

“He’s put a lot of faith in me. It’s great to work with someone so passionate about the club and the game. He holds that record for promotions for a reason. I’m excited to be a part of that and hopefully we can add to that.”

Bettinelli has his own experiences at this level, having twice won promotion from the division with Fulham.

“It’s tough, it is a really tough league and there are so many ups and downs, that’s the beauty of the Championship,” he said. “It’s about a bit of consistency, a bit of team togetherness - I joined the lads today and we’ve got that in abundance. We’ve got a tough couple of games to start with so we need to be ready if we want to hit the ground running.

“But we’ve got a talented squad, and with a bit of good fortune on our side we can get promoted this season - it would be a great achievement and something the players would remember for the rest of their lives.”

SAM MORSY The Egyptian international midfielder became our third summer signing last week, penning a three-year contract.

“It’s great to be here, I’m really excited to get going,” Morsy said. “I think the club had been tracking me for a while, but it happened quite quickly in the end.

“I think the manager was the tipping point for me. He’s got a reputation for getting teams promoted, his last promotion was recent as well. His history and his record of eating teams out of this division and that was a big attraction for me.”

Warnock has repeatedly spoken of his desire for more leaders in the Boro dressing room, a profile which the 29-year-old believes he fits.

“I was captain at Wigan for a number of years and captain at Chesterfield for a number of years as well, so I’ve always had that leadership role,” he said. “I’ll continue to do that, support Britt and all the other players as well the more leaders you have in a dressing room the better.

LAST TIME HERE  Ashley Fletcher’s goal ended our longest run without a win outside of the top division in 55 years. Ashley scored after 54 minutes on a night when the Riverside resembled a swimming pool such was the rain that came down during the game.

SOME INTRODUCTION! Thornaby-born teenager Dave Smith scored on his Boro debut when we met Barnsley in the League Cup in 1967.

He followed that by netting again in the next round…. as we beat FA cup finalists Chelsea.

TIME TO GO Barnsley are the only team to have relegation confirmed at the Riverside. Our 3-1 win in April 2014 was enough to condemn the Tykes to a return to League One.

COUCH TO 5K The clue is in the title really. The idea being that through gradually building up your strength and stamina you will progress from your couch to being able walk, jog, or run 5k.

There’s no magic trick, as the participants of the first programme will testify, there are, though, many rewards, not least of which is the improvement in your health and well-being.

“Many of the group from our first Couch to 5K still meet up, running the programme themselves,” says Gary Walton who puts everyone through their (gentle) paces. “Even though the programme completed its course a while ago.

“That was kind of the idea, that we provided the programme, together

with a nine-week fitness plan and encourage our participants to buy into it and make it work. Our first group found out that not only did it make a difference to their fitness levels, their social life expanded, too.”

Such was the success of that first programme, a second one started last week in Brotton. Running three days a week, at 9.15 on the mornings of Monday, Wednesday and Friday, like-minded people meet up to give it a go. The programme is open to men and women over 16-years-old and there’s no upper age limit, neither do you have to commit to going all three days.

“It’s natural to be a little apprehensive,” says Rosie Marshall.

“But everyone is there for the same reason really and you quickly make

new friends, it’s like a cross between a light fitness workout and a social club and it’s good fun.”

There’s still plenty of time to join in this free activity, you didn’t have to be in at the start. Like the first, this is a nine-week programme with a fitness plan, so you can easily catch up.

ACADEMY SCHOLARS RISE TO NCS CHALLENGE The NCS (National Citizen Service) has been a challenge for everyone involved this year. It is, though, a challenge that has been met head on.

Communities throughout Teesside and North Yorkshire have benefitted, as have the participants who have been at the heart of the social action initiative.

One of the groups involved were the new crop of first-years in Boro’s Academy at Rockliffe who wholeheartedly embraced the scheme, working closely with two care homes Beechwood in Northallerton and The Riverside care home in Darlington.

“We’ve been really pleased with the way everyone has bought in to what we’re trying to achieve,” says MFC Foundation’s NCS Coordinator Kelly Daley. “The Academy as a whole have

been very receptive. They saw the benefits for everyone and really got involved.”

Over the duration of the course, six Foundation staff helped deliver the programme to two groups, with Kelly at various times assisted by Joss Barrowcliff, Jordan Cotterill, Lee Grace, Tom Readman and Grace Robinson.

Many of you may have tried yoga, while all of you at some time in your life will have played bingo. Both

became part of the delivery, on Zoom, by the groups who also raised enough money to purchase care packages for the residents of the care homes.

U18 Calum Kavanagh spoke for both groups when he said: “It gave the lads and I a real sense of community and personal satisfaction knowing we have put smiles on the residents of care homes, especially when during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic there were extremely scared of what might happen.”

HERLINGSHAW PITCHES GET A NEW LEASE OF LIFE

A grant from the Football Foundation and a lot of hard work has transformed the outdoor pitches at MFC Foundation’s Herlingshaw Centre.

Following plenty of use and Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, the pitches were in a poor condition, in particular the goalmouths.

Groundsmen Tyler Woodrow and Jordon Bowker set about making it right.

Levelling was required, with seed and root zone needed, together with a thorough cleanout as well as top dressing and a form of decompaction. All pitches were cut very short, and scarified, helping remove a small percentage of thatch, thus helping drainage issues in the winter.

A considerable amount of debris was also removed.

A mini top dress with the existing soil helped with divot levels, then the pitches were seeded three times. Sand drainage channels were created in wet areas to help connect to the main drains, while the goalmouths and other wet areas were levelled and hand seeded.

The renovation continued with the application of fertiliser, while germination sheets were applied to goalmouths and other bad areas to speed up recovery. Watering was conducted mainly at night and after five weeks small areas started to improve.

Just two weeks later a major improvement could be seen and while it will take a little longer for the whole process to be seen to its best effect, the pitches are now better than they have been for a long time and ready for you to show your skills.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS ENCOUNTER S FIRST MEETING

The first League Cup tie was back in the 1967/68 season when the South Yorkshire side travelled to Ayresome Park for a First Round clash.

In a repeat of this season, the reward for the winners in the next round would be a game against Chelsea. The away side’s performance belied the two-division gap between the sides and were by far the better side in the first half.

After staving off Boro’s opening spell, in which John O’Rourke hit the bar with a third minute header, Barnsley hit back and were unlucky when Roger Barton’s 20-yard shot was disallowed for offside after 12 minutes.

Shortly afterwards Boro keeper Des McPartland pulled off a great save to deny Barry Thomas. The Tykes persistence paid off two minutes before the break when John Evans slotted the ball home to give Barnsley a shock lead.

After the break, in the 65th minute, Boro got a chance to level when a penalty was controversially

given for a foul on John Hickton.

Hickton took the spot kick himself and sent goalkeeper Ray Wood the wrong way to score. The goal galvanised Boro and the lead was doubled just three minutes later through David Smith.

On 70 minutes it was 3-1 when Hickton grabbed his second after good work from O’Rourke. Then on 81 minutes there was no doubt about the second penalty decision of the game, which gave Hickton his hat-trick and Boro’s fourth goal.

The two sides were pitted against each other in the same competition once again in the 1991/92 season.

A dour game was settled when birthday boy Paul Wilkinson struck two minutes before half-time for his 11th goal of the campaign. The goal was superbly engineered by Boro left-back Jimmy Phillips. Shaping up to hammer the ball up the line, he smartly dummied inside former Boro striker David Currie, before crossing perfectly for Wilkinson to loop a header over Lee Butler from 12 yards out.

Barnsley hadn’t really got a foothold in the match but twice within the space of a minute early in the second half came close to equalising. First Brendan O’Connell’s overhead kick sailed dangerously close to Stephen Pears’ right-hand post and then Alan Kernaghan’s outstretched leg blocked the progress of Andy Rammell’s goalbound shot.

Teenager Jamie Pollock went close with a 20-yard drive for Boro but the scoreline remained unchanged as Boro moved into the Fourth Round.

ITALIAN APPETISER

After a gap of the best part of two decades the Anglo Italian Cup was revived for the 1992/93 season.

The following season saw Boro and Barnsley drawn against each other in the domestic group stages – along with Grimsby Town – ahead of the Italian section of the competition.

The tie versus Barnsley at Ayresome Park saw an open game, with John Hendrie putting Boro ahead after 24 minutes. A delightful piece of skill by Richard Liburd ended with

him sending Hendrie clear to beat the offside trap and coolly chip over Lee Butler into the net from the edge of the box.

Five minutes after the break Hendrie nutmegged Owen Archdeacon and drilled in a low hard cross that Paul Wilkinson turned over the line from just two yards out.

Boro’s third and final goal came in the 55th minute when Craig Hignett was brought down by substitute Darren Sheridan and Wilkinson slotted the ball home comfortably from the penalty spot.

The 1980/81 season saw Boro reach the FA Cup Fifth Round after comprehensively beating Swansea City 5-0 away, and then West Brom 1-0 at Ayresome Park.

Third Division Barnsley were the opposition and brought a sizeable away following which swelled the crowd to a season’s best of 37,557. It looked like becoming a routine victory for top-flight Boro as goals from Mark Proctor and Bosco Jankovic saw the home side move into an early 2-0 lead – as well as seeing Billy Ashcroft and David Hodgson crash headers against the crossbar.

However, a smart volley from Barnsley’s Mike Lester just before the half-hour mark brought the South Yorkshire side right back into the tie and Norman Hunter’s side quickly took control.

There were chances at both ends but Boro keeper Jim Platt, in particular, excelled allowing his side to hold out and earn a quarter-final tie at home versus Wolves.

VOSSEN BREAKTHROUGH

Aitor Karanka took his 2014/15 Boro side to Oakwell to face Barnsley in the FA Cup Third Round.

Kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes due to a gas leak in the area and the first activity of the game saw Boro’s Rhys Williams stretchered off with a serious injury to be replaced by Milos Veljkovic.

Although edging the first period, Boro found themselves up against former keeper Ross Turnbull in fine was in inspired form, denying Spanish striker Kike on several occasions. Boro eventually made the breakthrough on 48 minutes when Jelle Vossen finished off Patrick Bamford’s pass.

Thirteen minutes from time Adam Clayton was dismissed for two fouls on Leroy Lita. This seemed to lift the home side with Tomas Mejias tipping over Conor Hourihane’s strike. However, it was Boro who had the last say with Daniel Ayala’s powerful header from a corner ending any hopes of a cup upset.

All Season Card holders will also be able to watch midweek away fixtures for free via our streaming service.

Supporters who were unsuccessful in the ‘Pledge To Renew’ ballot and subsequently opt for a refund on their Season Card renewal (as opposed to remaining in contention for future ballots) also waive their rights to free streaming access.

As was the case at the end of last season, our Season Card holders will validate their free MFC Digital Account at our Matchday LIVE streaming website using voucher codes. The voucher codes, along with more information on how to redeem and watch, will be distributed this week via email, or the post if we don’t have your email address on record.

UK SUPPORTERS UK-based supporters can purchase video (£10) or audio-only (£3) passes for league and Carabao Cup fixtures on a match-by-match basis. The video pricing is set by the EFL and is standardised across all clubs.

Video passes will not be available where a game has been selected for Sky Sports coverage, though the audio-only commentary from BBC Tees Sport will still be available.

In line with the agreement between the EFL and broadcasters, there will be no domestic seasonal subscription package for live video.

Audio-only seasonal subscriptions are available, priced at £45. This also includes Carabao Cup and FA Cup fixtures. .

OVERSEAS SUPPORTERS Overseas supporters can once more purchase a seasonal pass to watch or listen to all eligible Boro league matches, home and away.

Overseas subscribers have been contacted directly regarding seasonal vide passes while there is also an option to buy on a match-by-match basis for video and audio.

BARNSLEY WHO ARE YA? Founded in 1887, Barnsley have been at their Oakwell home since the following year. The club were FA Cup runners up in 1910 and winners in 1912. In 2017, a consortium including baseball legend Billy Beane – of Moneyball fame – took the helm.

THE HISTORY BIT Barnsley have spent more time in the second tier of the English game than any other club in history. In 1997, and after 99 years of trying, Barnsley finished second in the second tier and finally won promotion to the Premier League, spending a single season at the top table. Relegated by a 3-1 defeat to Boro in 2014, the Tykes were double winners at Wembley in 2016, Ashley Fletcher scoring in both the Football League Trophy and League One Play-Off victories.

The Austrian Gerhard Struber has become a popular figure with Tykes fans since his appointment in November 2019. At that point, second-tier survival seemed unlikely, but a vast improvement in form under Struber and two stoppagetime victories at the end of last season – also aided by Wigan’s point deduction – saw Barnsley stay in the division.

Alex Mowatt A talented schemer in midfield, Mowatt was recruited by the Reds from Yorkshire rivals Leeds United in 2017. He didn’t get off to the ideal start – sent off on his debut against Wolves – but soon became a key figure in the middle of the park at Oakwell and was arguably the standout performer in their promotion push in 2018/19. Developing as a leader and now captain of the club, Mowatt won Player and Player’s Player of the Year awards in 2019/20 and was rewarded with a contract extension.

IT’S A FACT Barnsley were founded in 1887 by Reverend Tiverton Preedy. An English clergyman who was noted for his work with the poor, Preedy was particularly interested in the use of sport within ministry, founding a church football team in the town which became the modern Barnsley FC.
