Knife Angel Comes to Hereford The Knife Angel is a stunning 27ft, 3.5 tonne sculpture of an angel made out of 100,000 confiscated knives received from 43 police forces across the UK. Originating from The British Ironwork Centre in Oswestry and created by sculptor Alfie Bradley, it has been on a tour of towns and cities around Britain raising awareness of the issues of knife crime and all forms of violence and aggression. Alison Davies lost her son Mark to knife crime in December 2018 and together with Meryl Cain and a small group of friends wanted to raise awareness of the catastrophic impact violent crime has on individuals, families and communities. The Knife Angel is coming to Hereford on 14 June to 12 July 2021 hosted by Hereford Cathedral. It is envisaged that this initiative will continue after the Knife Angel leaves Hereford.

We will have a general weapons amnesty, with the approval of West Mercia Police. During the Knife Angel’s stay in Hereford, there will be a series of free public workshops and events at the Cathedral and venues in the City; a National Conference, engaging with professionals in related spheres (this will be an online, ticketed event); a Youth Conference, identifying young people’s needs and issues which they feel have a negative impact on them and their community; a weapon amnesty in operation for the duration of the Angel’s visit, approved by West Mercia Police; a secure weapon surrender bin which travels with The Angel; an Opening Ceremony and Closing Vigil. www.knifeangelhereford.co.uk

their own ‘River Samples’ which could take any form, be that memories, photos, poems, paintings, songs or something else. Bourke said, “LiftTheRiver is intended to be something positive for local people to enjoy as we emerge from Covid restrictions, it is designed to encourage new collaborations and new friendships.”

Friends of the Upper Wye A new grassroots community group has formed to protect and champion the Upper Wye. When the river hit national headlines last summer for turning a putrid green due to intense and prolonged algal blooms it was labelled an ecological disaster. Hay-on-Wye resident Richard Greatrex wondered how to respond to this news and what he could do. He reached out to his local community to see if others shared his concern and was met with an enthusiastic response. People wanted to understand what was happening to their river and they wanted to help. Throughout lockdown, Richard’s band of concerned residents convened via Zoom and grew bigger and bigger.

They set about researching the many factors contributing to the poor health of the river, including severe agricultural pollution, the discharge of human sewage and the effects of climate change.

They formed Friends of the Upper Wye (FOUW), covering the area from the Wye’s source on Plynlimon in mid-Wales to its confluence with the Lugg at Mordiford, Herefordshire.

Knucklas Village Fete Knucklas Castle Community Land Project will be holding a village fete on 31st July this year at the Knucklas Community Centre and adjoining field. There will be numerous attractions including a dog show and demonstration. With doggy competitions in various categories from waggiest tail to dog most like its owner and tips on dog agility, this proved a popular event in 2019. The Black Crows Viking group will be showing their skill with sword, axe and shield, together with living history displays showing what life would have been like in different aspects of old Norse society. No village fete would be complete without a cake stall and competition, beer tent, barbeque, classic cars, secondhand book stall and numerous trade stands. Don’t forget we have a station in Knucklas very near the hall where the fete will be held, so why not come by train and make a special day of it? KCCLP is a community land trust that looks after about 21 acres of land in the village of Knucklas, in Powys. On Sunday 1st August they are also holding an Allotment Day on the Castle Hill site, with teas and music for would-be allotment holders. For more information see www.knucklascastle.org.uk

The group quickly discovered that there was a paucity of data about the state of the Wye and an urgent need for more regular monitoring at many more locations. With support from Cardiff University, the Environment Agency and the Wye and Usk Foundation, FOUW are now designing a citizen science programme to monitor water quality. They hope that people power can help to fill the data gap and complement the monitoring work being done by Natural Resources Wales and the Environment Agency. They’re looking to recruit volunteers who live near the Upper Wye, or a stream or brook which feeds into it, and who are willing to regularly monitor their local patch. Whilst the citizen science programme aims to expand scientific knowledge of the Upper Wye and its tributaries, the group is simultaneously launching an arts project CodwchYrAfon / LiftTheRiver dreamt up by group member Eamon Bourke. LiftTheRiver aims to highlight the cultural importance of the Wye and to investigate the role the river plays in the lives of local people. FOUW are inviting people to submit

A Letter from the Mayor of Kington Recently, there have been moments when it seemed hard to imagine life after Covid. The restrictions imposed by lockdown have become the new “normal” but with the restrictions being gradually being eased we are edging back to the old “normal”. Or are we? We are still to assess the damage the last 15 months has done to our shops, pubs, cafes and local businesses or how many of us have lost our jobs or are now in debt.

What has been the physical or mental impact of isolation from our friends and families? How have our young people coped? Returning to normal therefore carries with it a profound sense of loss which we will need to repair as best we can over the coming years.

Since January there have been several virtual meetings via Zoom of local groups and individuals in Kington to discuss post Covid recovery ideas. Hosted by Kington Town Council, people have been discussing how best we, as a community, can manage the recovery over the next months. Over the last year we have missed the annual events such as the wheelbarrow race, the Kington food fairs and the vintage show. Hopefully they will reappear now that the many volunteer organisers can start planning ahead with some confidence. Some events have already announced new dates such as the Marches Makers Festival which is going ahead over the August Bank Holiday weekend and the May Fair that will be returning albeit at the end of July.

Other News from Kington Town Council

The first three months of this year have been hard on many in our community: short days and cold weather have made the long haul through the pandemic seem tougher than ever. Kington is slowly coming back to life, but we will never be the same and we will need to keep pulling together as a community to heal scars and prepare for a better future. At Kington Town Council we are here to help support all of our community in every way we can.

I do hope we will all support them to the fullest because the busy annual calendar of festivals is what makes Kington such a lively place to live in.

The unique feature of Kington is its High Street of local independent shops and they’ve all been through a tough time. Once they are fully open, they deserve our support so let’s say Hi to our High Street and help it thrive.

We’ve met our schedule of meetings: full council, committees, working groups and task and finish teams, although few of us have seen each other in person since March 2020. We have kept current with all the ‘boring but important’ parts of our role: specifying codes of conduct, keeping, auditing and approving accounts, liaising with Herefordshire Council and national bodies etc.

All our staff have worked, full time, right through the pandemic. Many are behind on their holidays (but we still can’t seem to persuade them to take time off)! As our Mayor has outlined above, we have a series of plans both under discussion and under way.

We are also looking at a remembrance event later in the year so we can say a full farewell to those who have left us in the last 15 months, but for whom we were unable to pay our respects and celebrate their lives. It is also hoped to site two remembrance benches within the town to enable quiet contemplation and remembrance. If you have ideas, please tell us. serves to allow us to spend more on the decorations for this year and to invest in infrastructure for future years (and for decorations that are not just at Christmas). We are aiming to have a budgeted plan for this year approved at the July Full Council meeting. Christmas never stops at Kington Town Council. Welcome to a New Team Member

We’re delighted to welcome Tanith Vaughan to our team as our new assistant clerk and green spaces administrator. As well as helping the Town Clerk and deputising for her when necessary, Tanith will be ensuring our Recreation Ground and green spaces within the town are managed and kept pristine. New Emails for Councillors

As part of the Council’s move into the digital world, we will shortly have individual Kington Council emails for all Councillors. You can then contact us personally and directly; all communication will be transparent and we’ll keep a record for posterity. Speaking of the digital world, we find ourselves in a confusing place regarding our ability to meet as a council. Current government regulations allowing us to meet digitally will have expired by the time this note is published but we are still not able to meet in person without breaching social distancing rules. The meeting room we normally use at the Old Police Station is too small to seat the full council, staff, guest and members of the public and the media.

KTC Covid and Community Grant Funds

The Council’s Covid Fund is still open to any individual or group from the community who has a Covid-recovery-related project they’d like financial help with. The application process is simple and quick and usual grant sizes are around £500 but we can go higher if necessary. We can consider applications at any full Council meeting (usually first Monday of the month) and all grants are made in accordance with our grants policy (which is available from our Clerk or on our website) to ensure that the awards are transparent, accountable and directly beneficial to the local community.

We now have to find a viable alternative in the town. We may have to pause our meetings for a while until the powers that be issue new guidelines; it’s not what we want but we need to remain vigilant and safe for all of us. As soon as we know when we can meet and how, we will post it on our website.

The Covid Fund is additional to our normal budget for Grants which we make to community organisations every year (see below). If you would like to apply, please contact a council member, our clerk or visit our website. The fund will run until the end of the next financial year (March 2022) so there is plenty of time to have ideas about how to help Kington and our community get back on its feet. We also have budget available in our Community Grant Fund for 2021/22. We want to help so please get in touch with us.

Christmas Decorations Working Group

Following on from our previous update on how we intend to improve the Christmas decorations in Kington, we can confirm that we have established a permanent working group with the Chamber of Trade to help manage the process from now on. We have earmarked financial re7

came loyal and passionate about Locally Kington and became our friends. Then Covid-19 struck and the market had to close. But in June 2020 the market reopened! People were so delighted to see us back. It was hard work but satisfying and by last October we were again able to make a good donation to worthy local causes. So here we are in spring 2021, ready for a new season.

We hope this will be a bigger and even more popular year, with folks getting more confident to come into the town.

Locally Kington at Kington Market For many years it has been pretty clear to me that local food, resilience and greater self-sufficiency were going to be important in this era of climate change. Local expert Roz Myers-Brown had heard of my interest in local food that is nutritious, easily accessible and not just for the affluent. We tossed around ideas for a stall that could be an exciting addition to Kington Market on Fridays. She suggested the name Locally Kington and we discussed when to launch the project. I said in the next month and she said Friday!

Future Plans

Having started with just fruit and veg, in the last few years we have increased our range. We have experimented with things ranging from hazel rods, baskets, cards, bird houses to locally made snacks. Another important goal is to spread the Locally Kington model to other local towns. We may have Locally Knighton or Presteigne soon, you never know! To that end I have prepared a pack of information and guidelines to enable others to do what we have done. We offer this freely, just to build new relationships and the guiding principles listed earlier. At the stall, we have no doubt that there will come a time where these principles are not only useful but essential.

Those who have built systems will still have access to fresh food, as supply chains falter and choices become fewer. We believe that the fruit and veg produced mainly between April and October can be used through the year, making it less essential to access goods grown many miles away that have only limited nutrition and taste.

We look forward to welcoming our usual customers and look forward to making new friends.

Locally Kington Guiding Principles

The stall would run April to October so all goods would be both fresh and healthy.

The stall should have local produce and other goods from within ten miles of Kington, reducing food miles.

The produce should be affordable to all.

We would encourage a host of people who had grown extra food to bring it to the stall for sale; the stall would take a small commission for selling the goods, which would be lower if they helped on the stall.

Where possible we would discourage use of pesticides.

Suppliers would come and collect their takings at the end of the morning. if suppliers did not collect their goods on the day, we would take suitable produce to the Food Bank.

At the end of the year, Locally Kington profits would be donated to a local cause.

Making Progress

From a small start, the stall grew quickly. Many local people arrived early to leave their goods.

Some of these became very involved in the running of the stall (thank you Fiona Shone who is now a partner on the stall). Over time, other shops in town have embraced the stall as more people come to shop on Fridays. Other suppliers appeared, like Newport House, where there is a lovely walled garden. Mathews and Son provided their lovely organic potatoes. Plants for the garden were also a feature, especially early in the season. There were lines of people waiting to buy as early as 8:15 and however much produce we could access, it always seemed to sell. Buyers be9

Presteigne Repair Presteigne Repair reopened at the Radnorshire Arms on Saturday 15 May and continues on the usual 3rd Saturday of the month, either in the Radnorshire Arms garden, High Street or the Youth Centre in Hereford Street. It will all be carefully managed to provide a covid-safe environment in line with Welsh government measures on the day. Right to Repair

We are committed to raising awareness that repairing items, including electric appliances is not only possible but also often the most cost effective and environmentally friendly option. A new law coming into force this summer means that manufacturers will be legally obliged to make spare parts available to consumers (household items only). As well as directly addressing the ever growing emergency of unsustainable growth in landfill and waste, this will significantly help in reducing carbon emissions overall, as any repair does. Planned obsolescence in manufacturing will be reduced and in time 'outlawed.' That is good news, but we are not there yet! Professional repairers in particular benefit from the new rules, but it does not mean that initially anyway, spare parts will be available to the actual owners of the goods. The right to repair should also apply to Repair Café volunteers and ordinary consumers. As we work together to reduce waste, share skills and have fun in a communal activity we will continue to demand for this right, and individuals can also. We appreciate the practical assistance given by Repair Cafe Wales towards opening and supporting these events, now into the 3rd year. There are several new 'cafes' about to open in Wales bringing the total to 30. RCW also 'works with communities to influence standards for goods and government policy, collecting data from community hubs, and helping to inform policy decisions that promote a greener, sustainable world, whilst also working towards a more Circular Economy'.

From 2021, EU firms – and any UK firms wishing to sell to the EU market – will have to make products such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers and televisions longer-lasting. Under the new standards, manufacturers will have to supply spare parts for these household appliances for up to 10 years. The manufacturers must ensure spare parts can be replaced with the use of commonly available tools, without permanent damage to the appliance.

Finally from Peter Wright one of our many skilled and committed fixers, a good story!

Perhaps the Repair Café case that epitomises its whole philosophy was the 25-year old, upright vacuum cleaner whose drive belt to the beating roller had finally failed. Amazingly, the owner went to Bennetts, (electrics business) and came back with a packet of two new belts, one of which was fitted and the other retained by the owner. He departed happily with his repaired machine, with: “See you in another 25 years’ time.” Yes!

Marches Makers Festival August 28, 29 & 30 Kington A Celebration of Making The third MMF is coming soon! The signature exhibition, a collection of exquisite miniature works by 70 local artists, is in the Baptist Church, Bridge Street (free entry). This exhibition will be available to view both in person and online. In Kington’s wonderful Made in the Marches Gallery you can see 'Into the Midsummer Meadows' hosting work created by artists for the Apple Store Gallery / Birches Farm Nature Reserve project, plus MIND's Artspace 'Miniature Marvels.' Open Sat, Sun and Mon, 10am to 5pm. Kington Art Society will be holding their popular annual exhibition concurrently at Kingswood village hall and ECHO will show an exhibition of original and individual art and craft work, created by people living with disabilities in Herefordshire, at the Oxford Arms Duke Street – not to be missed! The 70 acres of Hergest Croft Gardens form a wonderful backdrop to the exciting and contemporary sculpture of Rachel Ricketts and Rolf Hook (admission charge; opening times: 11.30 am to 5pm). Workshops run throughout the weekend in the Baptist church hall with refreshments included. You can try your hand at rush basket making, willow sculpture and ceramics, all taught by experienced artists. Young people (11 to 14) can learn film making at a workshop in the Old Police Station on Saturday, led

by Mairead McVeigh, Hereford College of Art. On Sunday there’s a morning workshop: make a Fishbone Artists’ Book with Mike Clements and in the afternoon: Stitch Doodling with Kathleen Murphy. On Saturday you can see a performance of enchanting puppetry, “Creation” by About Face Theatre Company at the Burton Hotel, 11.30am and 2.pm. Booking required for these events. At the Market Hall there will be demonstrations of craft skills on all three days of the festival including large pot throwing, felting and printmaking; there will also be hands-on participatory activities. As if all that wasn’t enough there are Open Studios to visit across the three days (covid rules applying as necessary): Clare Conrad, ceramics at 9 Church St 11am to 5pm; Rachel Ricketts, sculpture at Studio 54 Bridge St 10am to 2pm; Peter Horrocks, painting at 33 Old Eardisley Rd 11am to 4pm; Kathryn Moore painting and weaving at 37 Church St 9.30am to 3.30pm; Jeremy Atkinson, traditional clog maker at Duke St 2 to 5pm. What are your aspirations while you hold the office of High Sheriff?

My interests in Herefordshire have always been around business, tourism, education and agriculture and so my Shrieval year will give me a platform to further promote the county, working on the tourism initiative. Following the year of Covid, I think there will be mental health shrapnel where I hope to contribute something to our overall recovery, specifically supporting mental health in agriculture and young people. Not many people realise that this role is wholly unpaid so I am trying to keep a lid on costs and find sponsors and support for things that I do, but it’s all so exciting and I’m trying not to get carried away.

Do you think it is more difficult for women to achieve a traditional post such as this?

Historically I certainly think it has been as it was very much a male domain. Now, I think it is much more egalitarian and there is of course no reason that a woman should not perform the role as well as a man, or indeed better. It really depends what you can give and where your areas of business and interest are. I suppose I have been very involved in so many parts of the fabric of the community, business initiatives, tourism, agriculture, that I bring a variety of skills to the table. I am currently chairing the Visit Herefordshire post-covid tourism initiative as well as the Herefordshire Agricultural Club. You know what they say about “ask a busy person….?”

Tell us a bit about yourself

Born in Lyonshall, one of four children of Richard and Julia Green, I spent my primary school years in Eardisland and Kington and secondary at boarding school. I never expected to come back to the family home as my younger brother Johnny was destined to succeed my father on the farm. Sadly our fates were changed as he died in a car accident in South Africa in 1993, so just married, we returned to Lyonshall where I took over the farming business. Prior to returning to the farm, I worked in London for 10 years as a dressmaker, entrepreneur and then in PR and Marketing. I was lucky enough to travel the world working on boats in the Caribbean, live and work in Australia and see far flung places from Machu Picchu to the Buddhist temple at Borubudor and the outskirts of the Great Barrier Reef. Oh to travel again!

What innovations will you bring to the role?

I have started a podcast which is highlighting people from Herefordshire who are unsung heroes, volunteers and people who wouldn’t always get a platform but they have great stories to tell.

Interspersed with these are one or two more famous Herefordshire personalities, but we will be talking about the community aspects of everyone’s lives, our view of Herefordshire and always 3 top tourism tips. As well as this I am hosting a seminar in late June which will connect together the Business and the Charity sector which I hope will build on the charitable and our more altruistic nature which has come out during this terrible and very difficult last year. I also have a few other plans up my sleeve – all will be revealed!

Ian (aka Gio) has played the non-traditional role of farmer’s husband, meanwhile setting up ETL Systems who design and manufacture RF (Radio Frequency) distribution equipment. We have three children (Willa, Hannah and Johnny) who are now in their early 20s and live away. Since returning to Herefordshire I have thrown myself into growing and diversifying our farming business as well as turning historic buildings into upmarket holiday lets and making a delicious black14

Do you see yourself as a role model for other young women?

I absolutely hope so. When I was younger my problem was self-limiting beliefs – I think my generation of women were still afraid to be what they could really be as they still felt that the world looked on them as slightly inferior. In most environments I no longer see myself as one sex or another – I am a farmer, I am in business, I am wise (sometimes!), I see things, I can help, I empathise and now I’m High Sheriff of Herefordshire. But it doesn’t make me any different to any other person whatever their sex; I don’t want to be judged for anything more than my essence; and I no longer think I am. I am just Jo! Is there anyone you’d like to thank for their support, advice, encouragement etc?

So many people, but my family of course – my Dad (d. 1997), Mum and my very supportive husband Gio. For the High Sheriff position in particular, Tricia Thomas, the outgoing High Sheriff, has been really encouraging and incredibly helpful as to be honest you don’t really know what you are going to do when you come into this post – I felt a bit like a rabbit caught in the headlights! Jeremy Wilding, the undersheriff (a constant in the role) is a very safe pair of supportive hands that the High Sheriff could not do without.

What, in your opinion, is the meaning of life?

What a difficult existential question – it’s hard not to answer with a cliché. When my brother died tragically young, I thought I had found the meaning of life as it had been taken away. When my children were born, I thought I had found the meaning of life as it had been created. But in essence life is what you make of it: it’s a challenge, a gift, a journey, a promise, a struggle, a goal, a paradox, a responsibility. Every day we do our best with all these things and life is just a big version of the everyday. Value it all and be graceful and kind; I’m sure we all find the more you put in the more you get out. I certainly do.

New Bookshop for Kington My first visit to Kington was over 20 years ago, when I came to buy books from Castle Hill Books on Church Street. That shop is now Made in the Marches and the town hasn’t had a bookshop for several years. My career has been in archaeology: I completed a PhD on the Neolithic and Bronze Age of the Anglo-Welsh borderland a number of years ago and have worked for a range of organisations, including teaching on the Archaeology and Heritage Studies degree at the University of Worcester. We moved from the Malverns to Kington four years ago and I was thrilled when the opportunity to rent a shop arose. We stock a range of titles covering politics, poetry, social and green issues, feminism and philosophy. We also have books based on, or set in, the local area and have a focus on Anglo-Welsh writing. Landscape and nature are also key themes. I take pride in selecting interesting titles which you might not have seen before: we re-order regularly, so the books in the shop are always changing. The window displays are also changed every few weeks, the right-hand window features a typewriter which produces the first line of a book at regular intervals. After a few days, the book from which the line is taken appears next to the typewriter. I have had a long interest in letterpress printing and although I don’t have a press myself, the shop stocks work by Graeme Hobbs who lives in Cusop, and Lancashire’s Incline Press. These include postcards, cards and small-run books, all hand-set and hand printed. We also stock books from other small and independent presses. As well as a career in archaeology and heritage, I am a potter and some of my work is for sale in the shop. Although we’re not a gallery, one wall features a small amount of art, starting with a few abstract landscape paintings by local artist Siwan Gillick. Siwan and I won the H.Art Emerging Artist bursary in 2018 and often show our work together. The art will change on a regular basis and will feature work by other artists. A dog that has enough outlets for its energy and opportunities to sniff, lick, scavenge, search and chew is a lot more content to be left for short periods vs a dog that is bored and frustrated. Make sure your dog has been to the toilet before you leave them! It has been shown that dogs that need to go to the toilet are restless.

So many of our furry best friends have become so used to us being home 24/7, a return to “normal” life can be stressful. One of the key signs that your dog may be stressed when you are leaving them is destructive behaviour: if you return from work to find a hole in the new sofa and a chewed wall, it’s easy to see your dog has been worried when you’ve been away. Another sign is going to toilet in the house when you’re out. Now this is normal for puppies who don’t have full control of their bladder, but if you pop out for an hour and your normally fully house trained dog has emptied on your carpet, it may well be a sign of stress.

The other thing that can alert us to our dogs being unsettled when we are out is the neighbours complaining about the barking! A few barks from your dog if the Amazon delivery guy drops a parcel off is nothing to be particularly worried about. But constant barking or howling while you’re away indicates that you may well have a very unhappy dog on your hands. So what can you do?

Here are my top tips for anyone faced with this situation or, better yet, anyone looking to avoid getting into this situation. Think about whether you can take your dog with you. It sounds simple and that is because the best solutions usually are!

A lot of pubs, eateries, holiday cottages and even offices now allow dogs to accompany their humans. If you have a busy calendar of socialising after lockdown, see if you can involve your dog in it too. If you know that you will need to leave your dog behind for short while, start preparing it for this experience now. Begin by leaving your dog in the house for 5 minutes whilst you take the bins out, if everything is okay and there are no signs of stress then extend your absence to 15 minutes, then 30, then 45 etc. Build it up slowly over a period of time. Give your dog lots of things to do to keep its brain busy; and not just when you are out of the house! A dog that has 17

Kington Medical Practice Update The vaccination programme continues at pace with our site in Leominster now focusing on the provision of second doses. We expect this work to be complete in June. We have seen that most cases of Covid in those vaccinated have no symptoms or only mild symptoms and the rates of new cases in the over 65’s are very low. Cases in Hereford County Hospital have dropped from a high of 122 to 0. Our network (which covers the patients of Kington, the Leominster practices, Mortimer Medical Practice, Tenbury Surgery and Weobley & Staunton) has not opted to continue administering new doses to the younger age groups; the under 50’s will be able to access vaccination at sites in Ludlow and Hereford via the National Booking System. We feel we must now fully dedicate our surgery staff to as much direct care of patients as possible. We are aware that there are considerable waiting times and backlog for specialist care and inevitably we will need to provide extra support for our patients. We are increasingly liaising with hospital consultants to manage complex cases to avoid delay in investigations and treatment. We must also ensure that all those with chronic diseases receive their check-ups and ask that patients do make appointments to see us when we contact to advise them that a review is needed. Covid cases are low at the moment but we do not know what will happen in the coming months. I would ask members of our community to consider their activities and exposure; we are having a taste of freedom but every different opportunity we exploit is an opportunity for Coronavirus transmission. If we start the day with a swim, go to the hairdresser, pop out to do some shopping and then meet friends for a drink, it is easy to see that the potential for transmission dramatically increases. Vaccination reduces this risk but it does not eliminate it. Contact tracing is now being done at a local level and our contract tracers are highly effective at reaching people who are potentially infected. We can help them by considering our activities and exposures carefully.

Planning has already started for this year’s ‘flu vaccinations and preparing for any needed Covid vaccination booster will be part of this. It has been a challenging and, at times, heartbreaking 14 months. We have reasons to be optimistic about the coming year and if we all help to keep each other safe we can look forward to better times ahead.

Knighton Town Council As the MidBorder News goes to press the council is about to choose the new name for the old library building. The council asked for peoples’ favourite option and made their decision at the May meeting. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for an update. Plans are ongoing for the redecoration of the interior of the building.

Pooch Problem. The council has given £250 towards the scheme that provides dog poo bags in dispensers around the town. The problem of fouling has increased and the clerk is investigating the possibility of creating a by-law allowing offending owners to be summonsed or fined.

Keep Knighton Gorgeous. The council is looking at suggested ways of tidying up the town, litter picking, mending broken benches and leaving verges to grow wildflowers for pollinators. Residents have volunteered to achieve some of these tasks and local organisations have also offered to help. The broken pavement outside the Co-op also needs attending to and the council is discussing the best way forward with Powys County Council’s highways department, whose responsibility it is.

The County Council barrier which blocks entry to Knighton’s old cemetery has been demolished by persons unknown. The wooden fence which was installed for safety reasons has proved unpopular with some locals and it was recently extended to cover a hedging gap. Knighton town council is investigating.

Knighton Food Bank has moved. It is no longer situated in the Presteigne Baptist Church and is now at the Knighton Food Bank in the Norton Street Baptist Church. Knighton Community Support has made a significant grant to the town council to pay for a defibrillator to be installed in the old library building. The total cost was £1300 and the grant covers all but £50 of that. Chair Yvonne Moses read about talks between charity Welsh Hearts and the council and put the idea of the grant to the KCS trustees. The cost includes providing training to use the device and a small plaque will be put in place acknowledging the generosity of KCS.

H21 South Kington – Hergest. The design work is currently underway to determine the best form of deployment: overhead using Openreach poles plus new Airband poles; utilising Openreach's existing duct network; direct bury of an armoured fibre cable. The physical build (actual deployment of the fibre cables) started in May with a final test planned in September. All works on the highway is planned in conjunction with Herefordshire Highways Authority. We will shortly be scheduling the works to test the Openreach ducting on the main trunk routes along the B4355 and A4111. On narrow roads we will implement a method called "long delay" where the traffic can be held up to 15 minutes for our operatives to clear the road and allow progress. Radnor Valley Recreation & Amenity Centre (The Old School) has received its first instalment from the Co-op’s Local Community Fund initiative. The money will be used to install a handrail and improve access now that the lockdown is being eased. Further works will include security lighting and the modernising of the kitchen. The Centre is home to The Hub, a not for profit group led by Ruth Watson and staffed by volunteers, which in normal circumstances provides a meeting place for people to enjoy food and drink, see films, attend concerts and discover new interests.

Knighton & District Rotary Club held a photography competition for young people aged between 6 and 18 on the subject of “Nature on your Doorstep”. Judges Cathy Jones, Larry Smart and Sheila Smith had the difficult task of choosing the winners. in the 6-11 age group: winner Grace Gurney, second place Alice Jones and third place Seren Preece. In 12-15 group the winner is Robin Fletcher, second Alisha Preece and third Ruth Petley. In the 16-18 group the winner was Christopher Warburton, second Christopher Davies, third Leon Leese. Presteigne cemetery has been extended. Some areas of Wente’s meadow will be left unmown to increase biodiversity, below the cycle track and in between some of the trees in the community orchard. The one-way trial on Hereford Street is now in place. A donation has been made towards the repainting of the town’s benches and the work will be carried out over the next few months.

New street lights were trialled in Broad Street and High Street. Presteigne and Norton Town Council say the trial will determine the exact fittings required when the lighting is upgraded in the next financial year. It will also help with the application for dark sky status which, if successful, will mean the town is the first in England and Wales to be approved by the International Dark Sky Association. The trial lasted a month and included a range of heritage and modern style luminaires.

Presteigne Town and Norton Grass Cutting: Roundabouts and Verges. Working closely with the County Council and County Cllr. Baynham the Town Council has supported reduced grass cutting for verges in Presteigne. Aided by the work and enthusiasm of a small group of volunteers this will continue in 2021 and also start in Norton. Look out for the signs placed by the volunteers to help identify the various plants in our verges. Wildflower planting and seeding on the town roundabouts, carried out by Caring for God’s Acre, and funded by the Town Council, is now entering its second year. The County Council grass cutting will continue in areas where highways visibility is an issue.

Norton Community Trust has submitted plans to turn the Grade II listed St Andrew’s church in Norton into a community hub. Due to declining attendance the church was declared redundant in 2020 and the trust was created to preserve the building and adapt it for use by the community.

If planning permission is given, the trust will seek funding to adapt the building. This would include removing pews, upgrading the heating system, moving the font and installing an accessible toilet and kitchen facilities. The building would be available to groups, clubs, coffee mornings and similar community events.
