In 1393, the peninsula Volewyk was added to the municipality of Amsterdam.

The start of Amsterdam-Noord.

1900 ~ 1907 Johan van Hasselt came up with the plan for a channel crossing Amsterdam-Noord, making a physical connection to the city posible

The Willem I locks had to be moved paid by the government.

1908 Construction started on the east & west sides of the channel.

In anticipation of completion the first working class housing blocks were built.

1914 Moving the locks was too expensive and the channel would never be completed. Following, the vacant space was declared a recreational area.

Mosveld was born.

Over the next decade more housing blocks were built, all keeping clear of the area once destined for the channel.

The new housing blocks were designed as a Garden City.

Good quality homes, lots of green and with a smallscale, village feel. Counteracting the poor housing quality in the innercity at that time.

In the same period, three parks were created in Amsterdam-Noord.

Two of them crossing the Mosveld area.

Mosveldmarkt

1922 The Mosveldmarkt was born.

For the first decades, the markt was held on and around Mosplein. Only later it was forced to move to the Mosveld, were it got it’s name as we know it today.

Mosveld football fields Home of ‘De Volewijckers’ from 1927 to 1964, on which they conquered the national title in 1944.

Meeuwenplein sports field The Roman Catholic football division of Amsterdam, ‘RKAV’ who weren’t welcome on Mosveld, had their own sports field on the Meeuwenplein.

Late 1950’s, in advance of the planned IJ-tunnel and connecting roads, the restriction to build on the Mosveld area was removed. ‘Ziekenhuis Amsterdam Noord’ (ZAN) was in 1966 the first building on Mosveld.

After it moved in 1987, it became a hotel.

Preparations for the new road connection to the IJ-tunnel had already begun. Mosveldmarkt’s spot became a buildsite and so it had to move.

In 1968, the Johan van Hasseltweg was built on top of Mosveld, Meeuwenplein and the two parks in between.

It was needed to finally connect the area with the citycentre via the newly built IJ-tunnel.

Around 1990, and still in use today, multiple schools were built on the Mosveld en Meeuwenplein area.

1995 ~ 2010 The eastern part of the Johan van Hasselt Kanaal was filled in to make room for more industry, and better accessibility of the area.

2014 After close to a century, the Mosveldmarkt moved just around the corner to the renewed van der Pekstraat.

This to make way for new developments on Mosveld.

Conclusion From the moment it was clear the channel wasn’t going to happen.

Mosveld has always been the social glue for it’s inhabitants, be it as a footballpitch, a park, a market or whatever you wanted it to be.

The place had a meaning, for the people and made by the people of Mosveld.

Over the years, starting from the late 1950’s, these features have been slowly disappearing. With them, the social glue has been lost. The moving of the market being the last straw.

The area now calls for action, to be part of daily culture again and to unite it’s past with it’s future.
