FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

I Thessalonians 5:16-17 calls us to “rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances.” At MACU, we thank God for His blessings! This fall, more than 2,500 students are enrolled on campus and online, preparing to serve Christ as pastors, teachers, nurses, business leaders, counselors, and coaches. With campus housing full and chapel at capacity, our campus is alive with worship, learning, athletics, and students making memories.

Our historic mission to train leaders for ministry remains strong. The School of Ministry has over 150 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The renewed Thomas School of Global Leadership is forming international partnerships for academic and ministry collaboration. Our new nursing program is equipping Christian caregivers for hospitals and clinics.

At MACU, students are immersed in a Christ-centered community where discipleship, service, and spiritual growth are a shared journey—supported by dedicated faculty and staff who mentor, pray, and worship alongside them. We believe God is raising up the next generation of leaders, and through your prayers and generosity, we can provide scholarships and exceptional facilities that

help students live, learn, grow, and answer their calling.

In this issue of the Mid-American, you’ll see new faces, places, and opportunities. I hope you’ll visit campus or check out our website to learn more. MACU is the place to be—where purpose meets possibility!

welcome home, evangels!

The start of the fall semester at MidAmerica Christian University was filled with laughter, hugs, and heartfelt moments as new students arrived on campus for Move In and the Week of Welcome (WOW Week). Families unpacked cars, decorated rooms, and said their goodbyes, while students quickly began forming the friendships that will define their college years.

Throughout WOW Week, campus came alive with opportunities to connect. From games and service projects to late-night activities, every event was designed to help students discover community and feel at home.

One of the most memorable moments came when President Phil Greenwald personally gave nearly 300 handsigned Bibles to first-time students. His gift was more than a symbol; it was a reminder that every student is known, prayed for, and welcomed into a Christ-centered community with purpose.

With faith, friendship, and anticipation, MACU’s newest class began their journey together.

BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS MACU Repeats as SAC Commissioner’s Cup Champion

For the second straight year, the Sooner Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cup returned to Mid-America Christian University as the Evangels captured the crown in just the third year of the trophy’s existence.

The SAC Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the athletic program that demonstrates the highest level of excellence across all conference-sponsored sports. Final standings are determined by a point system based on how each school places during the regular season in every SAC sport.

“I am extremely proud of our studentathletes, coaches, and support staff for their accomplishments over the past year,” said MACU Athletic Director Marcus Moeller. “We had several ‘firsts’ on the field and courts that certainly made it a fun year for our MACU family. We are fortunate to have great support throughout every level of our University and I hope our entire campus community feels an immense pride in this great accomplishment!”

Over the course of the year, the Evangels captured two SAC regular season championships: the men’s soccer team secured its fourth straight title, while the women’s soccer team celebrated its firstever regular season championship.

Competing in 10 SAC sponsored sports during the 2024-25 academic year, MACU excelled across the board, with eight teams finishing in the top four of their respective conference standings.

As a result, MACU becomes the first-ever repeat winner of the SAC Commissioner’s Cup, having also earned the distinguished honor following the 2023–24 season.

Athletics Announces New Head Coaches

Elicia (Eli) Espinosa was selected to lead MACU Softball. A standout during her playing career at the University of Utah, Espinosa competed in the College World Series. As an assistant coach at Oklahoma Christian University, she helped guide the Eagles to a 38-21 record, a national ranking, and postseason success. Espinosa leads with purpose, committed to building a culture rooted in grit, growth, and faith. “Coach Espinosa is a high energy rising star in the coaching world of softball and we‘re ecstatic to have her as a part of our MACU family!” said Athletic Director Marcus Moeller.

Softball, Women’s Basketball Add New Head Coaches for 2025-26

Scott Morris, newly named head coach of Women’s Basketball, brings more than 30 years of coaching experience, most notably with Northern Oklahoma College–Enid. There, he compiled a remarkable 460-154 record over 19 seasons, capturing nine conference titles and making multiple NJCAA national tournament appearances, including a Final Four in 2011. Athletic Director Marcus Moeller praised Morris as “a terrific basketball coach” and a strong mission fit for MACU.”

NEW MASTER OF ARTS IN CHRISTIAN MINISTRY LAUNCHES

MID-AMERICA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE the launch of its new Master of Arts in Christian Ministry (MACM). Rooted in biblical exegesis, Wesleyan-Arminian theology, and church history, the program also emphasizes spiritual formation, pastoral care, and the effective communication of the gospel through preaching, teaching, and evangelism.

“We designed the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry for those engaged in ministry leadership who are deeply committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and the authority of the Bible,” said Dr. Justin Key, Professor and Chair of the School of Ministry. “The MACM is a comprehensive yet flexible program that enables students to deepen their biblical and theological understanding while enhancing their practical skills— all while balancing life’s circumstances and ministry responsibilities.”

To equip students for their calling, the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry offers a wide range of optional emphases, including Ministry Leadership, Pastoral Studies, Theological Studies, Biblical Studies, Christian Leadership, and Pastoral Care and Crisis. For added flexibility, the program can be completed fully online or through weekly evening classes.

A LEGACY REBORN

The Thomas School of Global Leadership (TSGL) at MidAmerica Christian University continues a long tradition of preparing Christian leaders for service around the world.

It began in 2005 as the Thomas School of International Studies (TSIS), founded by Dr. Enrique Cepeda, who trained leaders to serve locally and globally. After his passing in 2023, the program paused, but its mission lives on.

Now, under the leadership of President Dr. Phil Greenwald, MACU is relaunching the initiative through two key pathways:

• The Thomas School of Global Leadership (TSGL), led by Dr. LeAnn Brown, housing the Master of Arts in Leadership degree.

• Thomas International Partnerships (TIP), expanding global opportunities like study abroad, ministry training, and collaborations with churches, universities, and organizations worldwide.

“I am honored to partner with MACU faculty to continue the legacy of Revs. Charles and Donna Thomas by equipping Christ-centered leaders worldwide,” said Brown. “I look forward to expanding our leadership programs and study abroad initiatives, and partnering with churches, businesses, nonprofits, and universities, both locally and abroad, to develop leaders who will make a Kingdom impact.”

For more information, visit www.macu.edu/tsgl.

MACU’S SCHOOL OF NURSING OFFERS MULTIPLE DEGREE PATHS

MACU’s Nursing Program offers multiple degree paths that equip future nurses with the skills and knowledge needed to make an impact in their field. Each program integrates faith-based principles, guiding students throughout their professional journey.

The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AAS in Nursing) is a two-year degree program designed to prepare students for licensure and a career as a registered nurse. Students learn and train through classroom instruction, simulation lab experiences, and clinical rotations.

For licensed, registered nurses aspiring to earn their BSN, our RN to BSN program offers a 100% online pathway designed to accomodate the demanding schedules nurses face daily. This program helps emphasize leadership development and clinical decisionmaking skills.

“Our goal is to develop more successful registered nurse candidates into the workforce to genuinely care for patients on a daily basis,” said Dr. Saundra Medrano, Director of Nursing Education.

MACU’s Nursing Program is designed to support students at every stage of their professional journey—whether they are just beginning, pursuing licensure, or seeking advancement in their nursing career. MACU not only prepares students to provide highquality care but also empowers them to lead with compassion, integrity, and purpose.

For more information, visit www.macu.edu/degrees.

CREATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CHRISTIAN NURSES

MACU nursing students are gaining real-world experience before ever stepping into a hospital, thanks to two state-of-the-art learning spaces: the Skills Lab and Simulation Lab

In the Skills Lab, students learn foundational techniques using hospital beds and lifelike models. They practice IV placement and blood draws on arm models, perform wound care, and even assist in simulated childbirth using a birthing model. These hands-on activities allow students to master essential skills in a safe, structured environment.

In the Simulation Lab, students step into the role of a nurse and care for responsive manikins that “talk,” have palpable pulses, and replicate real heart, lung, and abdominal sounds. Scenarios challenge students to assess symptoms, administer medications, and practice therapeutic communication.

“Simulations and labs enhance learning by giving students hands-on practice and building confidence for real-world nursing care,” said Dr. Saundra Medrano, Chair of MACU’s School of Nursing.

Fresh Floors, New Seating Revitalize Gaulke Activity Center

THE GAULKE ACTIVITY CENTER, HOME TO MACU BASKETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL TEAMS, received exciting upgrades for the first time in decades.

Fans will now enjoy new chair-back seating, offering greater comfort and improved sightlines to enhance the game-day experience. The hardwood floor of Staton Financial Group Court has been completely refinished with a new surface and updated markings. Freshly painted walls further brighten the interior, reinforcing the facility’s dynamic spirit.

“With these great updates in the Gaulke, we feel strongly that the families, fans, campus community, and loyal supporters of our volleyball and basketball programs will have a significantly improved fan experience,” says Athletic Director Marcus Moeller.

These renovations mark the first major seating overhaul since the 1980s and build on earlier improvements, including updated locker rooms, coaches’ suites, and concession areas completed in recent years.

A PATHWAY TO PEACE AND PRAYER MACU Unveils Prayer Labyrinth

Mid-America Christian University has introduced a new sacred space: a Prayer Labyrinth designed to foster prayer, reflection, and spiritual growth.

The labyrinth was created through the collaboration of more than 100 students, faculty, and staff. During its dedication, participants wrote prayers, scriptures, and words of encouragement on the foundational stones, embedding their faith directly into the walkway.

Unlike a maze, a prayer labyrinth follows a single, winding path that leads to a center point and then guides the walker back out again. It serves as a walking meditation and a symbol of the spiritual journey. Inspired by ancient Christian traditions, the design invites visitors to slow down, pray, and experience God’s presence through intentional movement.

Whether you’re seeking peace, clarity, or connection, MACU’s Prayer Labyrinth is open to all. Visit www. macu.edu/prayer-labyrinth to learn more. You can also watch a video about the prayer labyrinth by scanning the QR code.

a new gateway to worship

MACU has added a breathtaking new feature to campus: an 18-foot, 8-inch by 6.5-foot LED ceiling screen in the hallway leading to the JASCO Chapel. This immersive display sets the tone for worship by showcasing vibrant visuals that reflect God’s beauty through nature scenes, stained glass, and thematic video content that complements chapel messages.

The screen is more than decorative—it is designed to prepare hearts and minds for spiritual encounters. As part of MACU’s commitment to its institutional ENDS policies, the screen will feature the phrase “A Greater Encounter with God” in bold acrylic lettering, aligning with the University’s mission to foster meaningful spiritual formation.

Whether students are headed to chapel for worship or simply passing through, this dynamic installation serves as a daily reminder of God’s presence and creativity.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS IN OKC

In 1985, a bold vision became reality when the leadership of Mid-America Bible College, under the guidance of its second president, Dr. John Conley, made the courageous decision to relocate its campus from Houston, Texas, to Oklahoma City. With just 128 students and a handful of faculty and staff, the school relocated to a 35-acre plot of land in south OKC. What some once considered a risk has proven to be a remarkable act of faith—one that has transformed thousands of lives.

Since then, the institution has grown exponentially in enrollment, academic offerings, and spiritual impact. Over the past four decades, MACU has remained committed to its mission of preparing students to do greater things for Christ in every community and career. This 40-year milestone is not only a look back at the past but also a celebration of God’s faithfulness and the pioneering spirit that brought MACU to where it is today.

As the University looks toward the future, we honor the leaders, students, and supporters who believed in the call to relocate and followed it with courage.

MEET MAX!

Last August, we unveiled our refreshed Evangel mascot, a journey that began with a new look, followed by an animated cartoon design, and ultimately the debut of our physical mascot. He proudly bears the name Max, honoring Mid-America Christian University’s first president, Max Gaulke.

Our mascot is more than an emblem: it tells the living story of our faith and mission. Inspired by Luke 2:10, which proclaims good news of great joy to all people, and Psalms 104:4, describing God’s messengers as winds and flames of fire, the Evangel embodies our calling to shine Christ’s light wherever we go. Its roots run deep, echoing the 1962 Clarion yearbook’s burning torch—symbolizing lives on fire for Christ—and the President’s Fall 2023 Chapel challenge to carry that light into a world in need.

Max now stands as a bold reminder to every Evangel— past, present, and future—to rise up, shine brightly, and keep spreading the Good News.

FAITH IN ACTION

This summer, MACU students and staff members stepped out of their comfort zone and answered the call to serve. Through life-changing mission trips, they brought hope, compassion, and support to communities both nationally and globally.

In partnership with Crossings Community Church, MACU prayerfully sent a team of leaders and students on a mission trip to El Salvador. There, the team helped dig trenches and lay the foundation for a future medical clinic that will serve the community of Canton Ramirez. Beyond the construction work, the mission extended into daily ministry, fellowship, and encouragement with local residents.

Here in the United States, a team of students and staff served at The Dream Center in Los Angeles, California. The Dream Center helps restore lives and rebuild communities. Each day, the MACU team poured into the community through foster care intervention, leading Bible studies, and participating in Adopt-A-Block on Skid Row, one of the most impoverished areas in the city. They also assisted with a mobile food bank and meal preparation, impacting thousands of people who rely on these services daily.

Through these mission trips, MACU leaders and students offered a tangible expression of the love of God. The impact reached far beyond the communities served—it also deeply blessed the hearts and lives of every person involved.

LEADING WITH HEART Bella Renda’s Journey at MACU

As a ministry and marketing multi-disciplinary major, Student Government Association President, and student chaplain, Bella Renda has embraced nearly every opportunity to serve the MACU community. For her, leadership is not about titles, but about “showing up, serving faithfully, and creating spaces where others feel seen, valued, and encouraged.”

Her academic path has shaped a unique vision for ministry that blends relational depth with creative communication. “Marketing has taught me how to share one message with different audiences, which is so important in ministry,” Renda said. “My ministry courses have deepened my understanding of compassion, discipleship, and servant leadership.”

Among her many experiences, it’s the one-on-one moments with students that stand out most. “As much as they may think I’m helping them, they are truly filling my cup,” she said. “I love hearing their hearts and their stories.”

The MACU community, she shared, has been a place of encouragement, accountability, and spiritual growth, and it helps her see God’s character in new ways. Her advice to fellow students is simple yet profound: “You don’t need a title to serve. Step out in faith, build genuine connections, and show up consistently. God will bring fruit from it.”

Veteran, Father, Graduate: Kevin Tushka’s MACU Journey

After serving two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Kevin Tushka left the Army with a renewed sense of mission, but needed a Christ-centered path forward. That search led him to Mid-America Christian University.

“Faith as a data source,” a phrase once shared by a MACU professor, became a guiding light in Tushka’s academic and spiritual journey. After earning his associate degree in 2017, he returned in 2023 to pursue a Bachelor’s in Psychology. The decision was deeply personal: “I wanted to understand my own challenges and be more equipped to serve others, especially through crisis ministry.”

Juggling fatherhood, work, and school, Tushka found MACU’s one-night-a-week format essential. Professors supported him with both compassion and accountability—showing up early, staying late, and answering texts beyond class hours.

As a veteran, Tushka felt embraced in a learning environment filled with fellow service members and faculty who understood his journey. “Coming to MACU was seamless. It wasn’t just school, it was a support system.”

From late-night classes to answered prayers in the classroom, Kevin Tushka’s story reflects MACU’s mission to transform lives through a biblical worldview and a community that walks alongside each student every step of the way.

A DREAM FULFILLED: SOUTHWEST HALL RENAMED OGLE HALL

SINCE 2014, SOUTHWEST HALL HAS WELCOMED COUNTLESS EVANGELS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE, providing a home each year for more than 100 students. Now, thanks to a million-dollar gift from the sale of Kansas property, it will bear a name that honors both generosity and history: Ogle Hall. The gift comes from Dick Ogle, son of Edwin “Pop” Ogle, whose leadership was pivotal in the institution’s founding in 1953.

For Dick Ogle, the decision to give was more than philanthropy—it was the fulfillment of a lifelong calling. “It is a dream come true,” he shared. His passion for stewardship began at just five years old, when God prompted him to place his nickel—meant for an ice cream cone—into the church offering. Moments later, a woman handed him a dime after noticing he’d lost a tooth, sparking what he calls “a life of joyful giving.”

Known for his big heart and compassion for those facing hard times, Dick Ogle’s generosity has touched countless lives. His gift ensures the University continues to serve the Church of God through Wesleyan, Christian higher education, with his hope that cherished hymns like “A Child of God” and “The Church’s Jubilee” continue to remain part of campus worship. Through this gift, the Ogle family’s legacy will not only be remembered but will actively shape the University’s future.

UNCOVERING PURPOSE

Dr. Jessica Rimmer, a valued former staff member and current member of the Board of Trustees, has released a powerful new book, “The Purpose Formula: Learn to Be Fully Alive.”

In “The Purpose Formula,” purpose is described as a pilot light in the soul. When ignited, it fuels our work with meaning, passion, and energy. The book doesn’t just address what we do; it helps reveal who we are.

With her extensive background in higher education leadership and as CEO of Solomon Strategic Advisors, Rimmer offers practical wisdom and spiritual clarity to a topic many long to understand.

“The Purpose Formula is a timely message for anyone seeking to find ways to make their unique impact in the world,” says Rimmer. “As MACU kicks off their new year, I’m excited to provide the discussion opportunity and see the message come alive in the heads, hearts and hands of the MACU Community.”

“The Purpose Formula” is an invitation to step into the life God created you to live and to experience what it means to be fully alive. You can purchase “The Purpose Formula: Learn to Be Fully Alive” on Amazon by scanning the QR code below.

FAITH ON FIRE

AT MACU, WE BELIEVE THAT SPIRITUAL GROWTH IS FOUNDATIONAL to shaping the lives of students and preparing them to lead with purpose. Each semester, Spiritual Transformation Week is a devoted time set aside for students, staff, and faculty to pause, reflect, and deepen their relationship with Christ through worship and inspiring messages.

We are thrilled to announce that this fall’s featured speaker is Dr. Heather Thompson Day. Thompson Day is an interdenominational speaker and is a nationally recognized author, ECPA bestseller, professor, and encourager to generations navigating life, faith, and purpose.

“I was a professor of communication for nearly 15 years, and the classroom was my first ministry,” says Thompson Day. “I have sat in my office with hundreds of students navigating breakups, roommate drama, or feeling disconnected spiritually. This generation is my passion, and college is when I met God for myself. I cannot wait to return to a space I love, speak hope to students who matter deeply to me, and remind them that God can handle their questions.”

This fall, Spiritual Transformation Week will take place September 9-11 on campus. Please be in prayer for our students, staff, and faculty that their hearts and minds would be transformed through the Word of God.
