OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF HARDIN COUNTY

Fairgrounds becomes the Challenge focus By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – There are a couple of big betterment efforts under way which stand to benefit from the Iowa Falls State Bank’s Barlow Family Foundation community challenge. The long running family philanthropy has been particularly active this past couple of years reaching out to help with projects in the South Hardin area, and along with one we’ve written about in New Providence, there is another to be found out at the fairgrounds in /Eldora. This year the Hardin County Fair board decided that old project barns on the site had simply outlived their safe and practical usefulness. The board launched a campaign to replace the structures, and not too long ago learned that their project was being taken under the community challenge umbrella of the Barlow Foundation. That means that any donations you make to the fairgrounds project, during the October 11-23 time period will come in for a match from the foundation. The fair board said it saw some time ago there was a need to replace what were most commonly known as the old bucket calf barn and old horse barn at the Hardin County Fairgrounds. The plan is to construct one new

divided barn that will meet the needs of both types of livestock. “The old barns were approaching the point of being unsafe for our 4-H and FFA youth, their families, and visitors to the fair,” the board said. So the Hardin County Agricultural Society (county fair board) initiated a fund drive earlier this summer. Estimated cost to remove the old barns, grade the site, and construct a new barn is $125,000. The new barn will be similar in size to the market beef barn directly south of the show arena. The Barlow Family Foundation of the Iowa Falls State Bank has agreed to match donations between $25 and $100 from individuals to this project during the specified two-week period of October 11-23, up to a total match of $50,000. Only donations of $25 to $100 from individual people will be matched. But, for families, the following could be done: If a family decided they wanted to donate $500, they could donate $100 each in the names of five individual members of their family. If they wanted to donate $1,000, they could donate $100 each in the names of ten individual members of their family. Donations to this project are tax deductible. “This is an exciting challenge and a great way to double the amount of individual donations. Checks (continued on page 7)

Burgers at the Fount

By Rick Patrie News Editor NEW PROVIDENCE – Saturday, the kids of New Providence (with some help from a few adults) are hosting a pork burger fundraiser as part of the big weeklong fundraising effort to help underwrite a whole collection of improvements to the community parks. It is a great opportunity to have your donation to the parks improvement program count double. The Barlow Community Challenge of the Barlow Family Foundation in Iowa Falls is in effect for the New Providence projects. The Iowa Falls-

based foundation has picked several projects to support this year. There is a one week window of opportunity where donations tabulated effectively count double due to the match. The almost two week long campaign allows for individual donations from $25 to $100 each to be matched by the foundation. And the kid’s fundraiser will also qualify for the match. The burger fundraiser is at the New Providence Soda Fountain October 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. in New Providence. The Barlow match counts for donations made from October 11 through 23.

By Rick Patrie News Editor ELDORA – You think you have long hours? Try running for President. The candidates may, in turns, inspire or exasperate us, but there is no question they put in a full day’s work. Rick Santorum, the former Senator who has been a factor in Republican Presidential politics since way back a couple of election cycles ago – he was working late again last week. Our reporter started it all 80th 75 Year Reunion is October 27 By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – Credit one curious and busy correspondent for the Hardin County Index with starting a unique and long running local tradition. It was back sometime before 1936 that Mrs. C.E. Greef, a columnist for the then-Index, found particularly fascinating the life story of one of this area’s founders. The more she checked into it, the more she began to realize his story wasn’t unique. She began cataloging the stories and before it was done the Hardin

County then-Three Quarters of a Century Club, was founded in 1936. Today they call it the 75-Year Reunion. Greef worked for the newspaper, so was in a better position than most to come across bits of information about the founders. It was when she began to read the autobiography of Frank T. Clampitt, born at Honey Creek in 1860, that her interest peaked. Finding the story fascinating, she began researching Clampitt and then other names from the earliest days of settlement. She reportedly was taken by how much had changed between

the middle 1800s and the 30s of the century following. Her work became known around the community and then the local Rotary club heard, they suggested that if she could get a list of old settlers still living they would host a dinner for the group. The 75-year bracket was just an afterthought at the time. But it became the qualifier for the free dinner. By the 1950s about half of the honorees were Hardin County-born. But the real rule is only that you be a resident of the county for 75 years. (continued on page 7)

Mrs. C.E. Greef had a curiosity about some of the old settlers still around back in the 1930’s and she began to catalog their stories. The Rotary found out and the rest is the 75 Year Club story.

New look

By Rick Patrie News Editor SOUTH HARDIN – It has been a project in the making for several years, according to South Hardin Activities director Matt Thompson. The new scoreboards in the high school gym. Just recently the Hardin County Savings Bank, and its associated Brown Hurst Insurance and Grinnell Mutual Insurance companies combined to make a gift of $20,000 to the district – in the form of the new scoreboard. Thompson said the project had been on a wish list for some time, and when he finally approached the bank with the idea, they surprised him by covering the whole cost of the new equipment plus covering the cost of moving the old scoreboards from the high school to the downtown elementary. The new board on the north side includes a statistics bank for people wanting to track individual athletes during games. The new boards are remarkably maintenance free he says. The LED lighting is close to forever lived, and the units are tough as nails, able to take what a gym can throw at them. The whole project came at no cost to the district. And pretty much brings the school up to date with what is appearing in schools across the country.

There’s a new scoreboard in the South Hardin High School gym and the entire over $20,000 project was underwritten by three often sponsors for the school, all under the The Hardin County Savings Bank umbrella. They include the bank, Brown-Hurst Insurance and Grinnell Mutual, represented by those pictured: David Vander Wilt, President of HCSB; Matt Thompson the school activities and athletic department head, Marc Anderson and Dianne Haywood, both with BrownHurst Insurance.

Long work days for presidential campaign candidates

(continued from page 1)

about 8 p.m., rushing down from an earlier stop in Mason City that evening, and coming off stops throughout the day. His day was still rolling with no particular end in sight at 9 p.m. after he had spent an hour fielding questions from members of the Hardin County GOP central committee in a meeting at the county engineers office.

The crowd was primarily the central committee itself so it was very much a close up meeting. Santorum passed on a speech and filled the hour with responses to questions. The listeners didn’t spread the field wide. Their focus was clearly on three matters. Immigration, and more immigration,

Iran, and Alexander Putin. The candidate actually steered the talk to jobs and American companies taking them overseas – and to how Republicans “must start thinking of being the party of the working people, at least as much as their employers.” But the first and last talk was on immigration. His tone was pretty uncompromising. Santorum said

the “most compassionate thing the country could do for people wanting to come here is insure than that this is a country of laws when they arrive.” He discounted his opponent, Donald Trump’s, similar ideas on the subject as “being all over the place from one day to the next.” Santorum said the country had to begin looking at reducing immigration as a whole, legal and illegal, doing so permanently, and using immigration as a tool to enlist the worlds brightest and most productive in locating to this country. Santorum said that the current guest worker and guest student system has deteriorated such that valuable skills are no longer critical to gain entrance to the country. He says concerns about deportation of several millions of people are overstated, that identifying and con-

tacting about half the targeted population could be done expeditiously through the existing bureaucracy. He said a simple notification that their time was up would likely result in a huge voluntarily exodus from the county. For the rest, the country would have to get serious about apprehension and removal, he said. Santorum said he would also act on other issues he said related to immigration. He said he would set in place a trade policy, which would pressure multinational and American companies to bring their jobs home to US citizens. Santorum said returning manufacturing to America from places like China, would do more than just help the workforce. It would push up wages, cut into inequality, and even help mitigate concerns about CO2 levels – when the work was once again being done here under stricter

environmental standards than those found in places in the developing world, he said. The candidate fielded some concerns about Russian intentions in Eastern Europe the eastern Mediterranean and its relationship with Iran. He blamed Russian activities of the last couple of years on weaknesses in the Obama foreign policy. He said he would bulk up the military and resist Russian interventions in Syria but the key to his Middle East policy would be resisting Iran. He said he would reintroduce more forces to Iraq to re-pacify the county and force an accommodation between the Shiite and Sunni factions. If they resisted he said the US should impose order and secure Iraq’s boundaries unilaterally. He would give Iran a firm ultimatum on ending its nuclear program or face military action.

Reserving a bus ticket to yesteryear

By Rick Patrie News Editor ELDORA/WELLSBURG – A group of north Iowa enthusiasts for Iowa history brought their mobile exhibit and lecture series to Eldora and Wellsburg a weekend ago. “At Home in the Heartland: How We Got to be ‘Us’” was featured at the Wellsburg Community Center and then came to the Eldora Library. Over the next 18 months, TRACES, whose home bases are in Mason City and the Twin Cities, plans stops in all 99 Iowa counties on three different tours. Usually it will call at schools, libraries, colleges, museums and other institutions. The first 42 counties are already scheduled in fall 2015. While the overall tour focuses on Iowa history, the Wellsburg community center show also featured East Frisian chapters of the Iowa settlement, and in Eldora there will be a short section on the community’s days hosting a POW camp. Even a short conversation with the bus driver showed you the team had done their homework on Hardin County, past and present, too. Project director is Michael LuickThrams, whose family has lived in Iowa since the 1830s. Forty years of research has yielded hundreds of photos, maps or other documentation that offer a narrative look into Iowa history. Dr. Luick-Thrams is a Ph.D. historian (Humboldt Universität, Berlin), an educator and speaker. Docent Irving Kellman guides visitors through the BUS. Founded in 2001, TRACES tries to bring people of different backgrounds and perspectives together for an exchange of experiences and personal histories. The idea is quite deliberatly to break down ideological and other varriers. To appreciate the past, but to get beyond it too. TRACES first came to be with a focus on WWII history. Now that

Letters to the Editor Challenges Mayor To the Editor: From my understanding the Mayor of Eldora position is a full time position, elected by the people and paid for by the citizens. At the council meeting held Tuesday, Oct. 6 I was a little thrown back when Mayor Jim Brown was asked by a citizen of Eldora if he could answer the question as to how many months he plans to be in town and available during his next term should he be re-elected. The question was dismissed with a no, and he was not going to answer that question because this was not a forum meeting for candidates. I wondered why this was such a challenging question. In my job I am expected to be accountable to the people I work for and with. I am concerned about his absence from our city. I do not feel this position should be a position of convenience. The person representing the citizens of Eldora should be held

by someone who appreciates the citizens of Eldora and is not annoyed to be asked a simple question about his attendance. The Mayor position is important and needs to be viewed as a priority to whoever holds it. I’m also concerned about the position filled as Mayor Pro-Tem when our Mayor is frequently not available. Unfortunately, respect and concern for the citizens of Eldora are not a priority. I get the impression that a warm body is all that is required to step in and represent our city regardless of the attitude or approach to issues or citizens. I feel we should have a Mayor who is accountable full time to the people who vote for and employ him. I also feel that citizens of Eldora should be respected and be able to ask questions that may not be convenient to answer. Tina John Eldora

Corey Wieneke was found bludgeoned to death on the bedroom oor of his rural West Liberty home on Tuesday, Oct. 13,

They all hope you will join me and Hardin County 4-H in supporting this project and taking advantage of the Barlow Family Foundation match during October 11-23.

Join the 80th 75-year Reunion (continued from page 1 That first dinner ever had as distinguished guests the oldest living residents of the county: David Hauser and Mrs. Jennie Hauser Lockard, both born in 1850. Now it is time once again. The 80th annual gathering of the Eldora Rotary Club’s Hardin County 75-Year Club will be held at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The event will once again be held at the St. Mary Parish Center in Eldora. If you have been a resident of

Hardin County for 75 years, you deserve some recognition and with that in mind, the Eldora Rotary hosts the dinner at noon. “If anyone knows of persons who are long-time eligible or newly eligible, we ask that the Eldora Rotary is notified as soon as possible. It is again our hope to entertain and honor every person who has been a Hardin County resident for 75 years or more,” according to Jim Brown and Tim Ellefson, who are co-chairs of this event. Remember, any person who has

been a resident of this county for three-quarters of a century is eligible to be a guest of the event. The dinner is free to all members. Guests will have to pay a small fee. Corey Lee Wieneke, 22, Died Oct. 13,1992, Location: West Liberty

1992. The cause of death was blunt trauma to the body. A blood-stained aluminum softball bat found one mile from his home was conrmed to be the murder weapon. Wieneke was the late shift bartender at Wink’s Tap, a downtown West Liberty tavern. Authorities believed Wieneke knew his killer and said there was no evidence to suggest it was a random killing, and that they believed the person responsible was not from West Liberty but possibly from Iowa City. Investigators also said they did not believe the murder was drug-related and that it could be connected to a relationship he had with a woman. Wieneke was returning home from Iowa City around 7 a.m. the day of the murder.

Find out more about this and other unsolved homicides at www.IowaColdCases.org.

ANYONE WITH ANY INFORMATION about Corey Wieneke’s unsolved murder is encouraged to call the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Ofce at (319) 263-6055 or (800) 369-9635 or the Iowa DCI at 515725-6010.

One dumpster may be used for approved in-house occupations for each single or two-family dwelling, but only on the following conditions: a. all such dumpsters must be regularly emptied as required under sections 105.03, 106.04 and 106.05 of the eldora Code of Ordinances. Rated Falcons power past Tigers by Scott Bierle Sports Editor ELDORA- The high-octane offense of Aplington-Parkersburg was experienced first-hand by the South Hardin football team here Friday. The Falcons hit the 50-point plateau for the fifth time in seven games and raced past the Tigers, 50-14 during Class 2A, District 6 play. Six-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg found the end zone seven times in nine possessions and led from the get go. Just three plays and 56-seconds into the contest the hosts led 7-0. After runs of 15 and eight yards, quarterback Cade Alberts spotted a wide-open Shane Poppens dashing down the middle of the field for a 38-yard scoring strike. Nick Waller

added one of his six extra point kicks and the rout was on. The three-play drive was one of three for the quick-striking Falcons along with a two-play scoring drive. After South Hardin went three and a punt, A-P’s Isaac Ubben reached the end zone for the first of three times from six-yards, capping a nine-play march. Fueling the drive was a 26-yard run and 12 yard catch by Cody Johnson. The Falcons stretched the advantage to 22-0 seconds into the second period on a five-yard pass play from Alberts to Tyler Duster. The Tigers made the game a contest when a 10-yard touchdown pass from Ty Cook to Jon Weber capped a 94-yard drive and a Cook to Bridger

Lawrence two-point play pulled the visitors within 22-8 with 3:09 showing before the break. An early 18-yard run by Hunter Edgerton followed by a 44-yard gallop by Jordin Wilkie on a fake punt to the 10 sparked the drive along with a pass interference call on A-P. A Weber interception started SH at the six. The Falcons answered with another three-play drive. After a Ubben 11-yard run, Duster dashed 37 and then the final six. The cushion was expanded to 36-8 early in the third on a two-play 86-yard drive as Duster sprinted 70 yards and then Ubben went 16. Ubben added at third TD on a 50yard run and Lucas Hovenga capped the host’s scoring spree with a oneyard blast in the fourth. South Hardin’s second touchdown was tallied by Aden Butler on a 28yard sprint to the corner of the end zone with 4:11 to play. “We had some opportunities. The are a very good team,” said South Hardin coach Barry Scott. The Duster – Ubben combo com-

They are a hungry bunch looking to impress coaches and colleges,” stated Melton. The Eagles will have an Illinois feel where five players came from, including in the Chicago area, along with two from Indiana, and one from Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia and Iowa. The Iowa product is Choi Kuoi, who played for Ames High School last season and is originally from South Sudan, Africa. Salif Boudie from Birmingham, Alabama is also originally from Africa. “The number one goal was to find height and I found height at every position. Last year we were hurt by a lack of size and that needed to change,” said Melton. He added defense will be stressed.

“I am emphasizing defense and that will get the offense going. We want to be a team that plays both ends of the court.” The team concept will be key, according to Melton. “Putting a team together with new players always means team concept will be key. I see these guys working well together. This team can play with anyone.” Quakerdale next travels to Indiana for the Vincennes Jamboree Oct. 1718. The Eagles then open the regular season at the highly-regarded Don Bosco Prep Showcase Oct. 30-31. Quakerdale’s home opener is scheduled for Nov. 16 against the Waldorf JV. The Eagles Classic will be held over three-days in early January. For the entire Quakerdale Prep basketball schedule go to www. quakerdaleathletics.com.
