Obituaries/Flashbacks We remember Our lOved Ones Benjamin L. Urban, 78, Clarion

Ben L. Urban, 78, of Clarion, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton. Funeral services for Ben Urban were held on Saturday, March 15, at 1:30 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion with Pastor Ron Nelson officiating. Burial was held at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion. Benjamin Lee Urban was born on November 19, 1935, to Chris and Johanna Urban in Calumet, Iowa. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1954, and then attended Morningside College in Sioux City. Ben married Aurel Englert on June 23, 1956, and to this union, two sons were born, Mark and Jeff. After working various jobs, Ben served in the Army in Washington

State, and also worked in Cherokee at the District Patrol office as a clerk. He attended Patrol school in Des Moines, and began duty as an Iowa Highway Patrol Officer in Clarion in April 1959. He served his entire

Patrol career in Clarion, where he retired in June 1991. Ben’s main passion was flying. He owned his own airplane, and enjoyed flying with Aurie to fly-in airport breakfasts. Ben also enjoyed golf, camping, vacations with his family, taking photos, and was a member of the Masons, the American Legion, and First Lutheran Church in Clarion. Ben is survived by his wife, Aurel; his two sons, Mark Urban of Denver, Colo., and Jeff (Molly) Urban of Tucson, Ariz., and their children, Haley and Jared. Ben was preceded in death by his parents. Ewing Funeral Home of Clarion was in charge of arrangements.

Mae E. Schreiber, 93, Eagle Grove

Mae Elizabeth (Ennen) Schreiber, the daughter of Henry and Daisy (Keel) Ennen, was born April 18, 1920, in Britt, Iowa. Her family moved to Meeker, Colo., while she was a young girl. Returning to Iowa, she graduated from Britt High School in 1938. Mae worked as a domestic until her marriage. On October 26, 1941, Mae was united in marriage with Henry Lester Schreiber at the First Lutheran Church in Britt. They were blessed with seven children. Together they farmed for many years in Hancock and Wright County. They retired in 1989 and moved to Eagle Grove. Mae was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Woolstock. Her favorite saying was “Put the can’t down and do it anyhow!” Mae passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the age of 93 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 58 years, Henry

on December 8, 1999; brother, Merle in childhood; two daughters, Judith Ritter and Gloria Reikens; one grandchild; and three greatgrandchildren. Mae is survived by her children: Marjorie Kuebrich and husband, Terry, of Montrose, Colo., Gerald “Jerry” Schreiber and wife, Mary, of Kanawha, Richard Schreiber and wife, Elaine, of Garner, Kenneth Schreiber and wife, Julie,

of Knierim, and Merlin Schreiber and wife, Michele, of New Vienna; two sons-in-law, James Ritter of Cedar Falls and George Reikens of Weslaco, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven greatgreat-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 15, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Woolstock, with Rev. Bill VanNostrand and Pastor Mark Schreiber officiating. Burial was held in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Mae appreciated the support of her family and the care of her son, Merlin and wife, Michele, in her final months. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.

James A. Skiff, 91, Eagle Grove

James Alexander Skiff, the son of Ward and Mary (Stout) Skiff, was born June 20, 1922, in Silt, Colo. He was raised and educated near Eagle, Colo., graduating from Eagle High School in 1940. Jim worked for Lock E. Martin before being drafted into the Army Air Force, serving during W.W.II, from 19421945. He then returned to Colorado and cut timber, and worked for the Denver Rio Grand Railroad. On September 8, 1956, James was united in marriage with Marjorie Young at Denver, Colo. They made their home in Colorado for a few years before returning to the farm northwest of Eagle Grove in 1963. James was a longtime member of Grace Evangelical Free Church. He also enjoyed cooking and woodworking. James passed away on Saturday,

March 15, 2014, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove at the age of 91 years. He was preceded in death by his

parents; wife, Marjorie, in 2007; brother, Clifford Skiff; and sister, Lavonne McCallister. Survivors include his son, Joel A. Skiff and wife, Jennifer, of Lonsdale, Minn.; brother, Duane Skiff and wife, Violet, of Fruita, Colo.; and sister, Rose Marie Stude of Garfield, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 20, 2014, at 1 p.m., at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove with Pastor John Nett officiating. Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery, rural Eagle Grove. Visitation will be two hours prior to service time. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove is in charge of arrangements.

Teri L. Roseland, 59, Churdan, Iowa

Teri Roseland, age 59, of Churdan, Iowa, passed away February 23, 2014, at the Israel Hospice Center in Ames, Iowa. She was diagnosed with malignant melanoma cancer in 2005 and battled the disease for a long nine years. Teri Lynn Roseland was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on January 22, 1955, to Marvin and Kay (Freeman) Roseland of Eagle Grove, Iowa. She lived in Eagle Grove for many years, until her family moved to Phoenix, Ariz. She returned to Iowa her senior year in high school where she lived with her grandmother, LaVonne Freeman, and graduated

from Paton-Churdan High School. She remained a resident in Churdan the rest of her years. She was blessed with two children, Anthony Tasler of Polk City, Iowa, and Ashley Adams of Jefferson, Iowa. Teri’s joys in this world were her friends and family. She loved to cook and bake, online garage sales, and was spending the remainder of her days planning for the arrival of her granddaughter. She also doted a lot of her time and love to her dog, Chachi. She was also very passionate about spreading the word about melanoma and educating anyone on the disease.

Teri is survived by her son, Anthony; daughter, Ashley; granddaughter Dakota; sisters, Vicki Sutton of Churdan, and Lori Habermacher of Phoenix; brother, Jerry Roseland of Fallon, Nev.; and many friends and family. Local relatives include aunt and uncle, Mary (Freeman) and Phil Warner of Goldfield, aunt, Ellen (Roseland) McCurry of Eagle Grove, cousins, David McCurry of Eagle Grove, and DeAnn Pitman of Roland, Iowa. Teri’s Celebration of Life will be held at 209 Main in Paton, Iowa, on Tuesday, March 22, from 4 to 7 p.m., with dinner served at 5 p.m.

Berniece M. Woodburn, 84, Waukesha, Wis.

Berniece M. Woodburn, a longtime Waukesha, Wis., resident, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Angels Grace Hospice at the age of 84 years. She was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, on March 12, 1929, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (nee Degan) Keppers. She was a graduate of Eagle Grove High School, where she performed in theater musicals. Berniece received her associate degree in teaching and taught in one-room schoolhouses in Iowa. She then became a stewardess for American Airlines. On October 2, 1954, she married Robert J. Woodburn in Eagle Grove. He preceded her in death on June 7, 1997. Berniece was a former model and beauty queen in Illinois, and went on to judge Miss America Beauty Pageants. In addition, she was a real estate agent, and was last employed at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She was a member of the Kiwi Club, and a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was active with the Christian Mother’s, Catholic Study Club, New Beginnings, and where she initiated

the visiting of the sick at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. She will be sadly missed by her children, Mary T. Woodburn of Pewaukee, Wis., Kim A. (Dave) Krimmer of West Bend, Wis., Robert J. (Kristin) Woodburn of Sparta, Wis., and Michelle K. (Karl) Roth of Watertown, Wis.; dear grandmother of eight grandchildren: David Krimmer, Wes (Kelsey) Krimmer, Natalie Woodburn, Brittany Roth, Christopher Roth, Melissa Roth,

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Roger and Harold Keppers; and her sister, Helen Keppers. Visitation was held on Saturday, March 15, from 11 a.m., until the time of the 12 noon Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 225 S.
