Jackson BOE Members Sworn In For New Terms

By Bob Vosseller JACKSON – While three members of the Board of Education were sworn in during the board’s recently held reorganization meeting, the panel did not select a new president or vice president for the year. Ta r a R ive r a a nd Scot t Sargent, who

were re-elected to the board for three-year terms in November, and Tzvi Herman, who was elected to a oneyear term, began their new terms after being sworn in by Business Administrator Michelle Richardson prior to the meeting to allow for social distancing practices.

In a poll vote taken to choose a board president, Herman and Board member Sargent nominated Rivera. Board members John Burnetsky and Thomas Colucci nominated current Board President Michael Walsh to serve in that role for another year. When it came to a

vote, Walsh and Rivera voted for their nominations and despite a second vote taken by Board Attorney Marc Zitomer, the deadlock remained in a threeto-three vote. Board member Gus Acevedo was absent for the reorganization meeting and could not cast a deciding vote.

The same went for the selection of a Board vice president. Sargent was nominated by Rivera and Herman to serve in that capacity while Burnetsky and Walsh nominated Colucci who served in that role last year. The votes remained at a stalemate again. (Jackson - See Page 4)

Trump Pardons Former Ocean County GOP Boss Gilmore

By Jason Allentoff OCEAN COUNTY – As the sun set on his final days as Commander-in-Chief, President Donald Trump granted clemency to 143 people including a familiar name to Jersey Shore residents: former Ocean County Republican Chairman George Gilmore. According to a press release put out by The White House, President Trump pardoned 73 individuals and commuted the sentences of 70 others early January 20, just hours before his term ends. Gilmore, 71, of Toms River, was convicted of not paying federal income tax for his employees and lying on a loan application. He was sentenced to one year and one day in prison. Gilmore had been in the process of appealing his conviction on the tax evasion (Trump - See Page 4)

Council Shows Renewed Purpose After Difficult 2020

By Bob Vosseller JACKSON – Two incumbents and one newcomer were sworn into office for full four-year terms during the Township Council’s reorganization meeting. Martin Flemming and Steven Chisholm who took office last year, will now serve full terms having replaced council members who had resigned. Newcomer Nino Borrelli who served on the Zoning Board of Adjustment also won election last November taking the seat of long serving Councilman Ken Bressi who did not run for re-election. The three Republicans took their oath of office at the recently held Council reorganization meeting which served as a time for reflection on 2020 and for setting goals for the year ahead.
