Second baseman Joey Franceschini Jr. Third baseman Gabe Gardner. Catcher Brad Frank. Outfielder Chris Cardone. Outfielder R.J. Johansen. Outfielder Chris Crawford. Outfielder Mike Belostock. Outfielder Eric Campesi. Outfielder Tom Gannon. Manager Mike Gaynor. Coach Ken Kondek. Coach Joe Franceschini Sr. And what the group - the Toms River East American Little League All-Star team - accomplished 20 years ago will also never be forgotten. The club captured the 1998 Little League World Series title, besting Kashima, Ibarak, Japan, 12-9, on Aug. 29 in front of some 40,000 fans and an ABC Television audience at Howard J. Lamade Stadium in South Williamsport, Pa. “I don’t think it ever really sunk in on me when we won the world championship,” said Cardone, who went 2-for-2 in the finale. “To be honest, I don’t think I will ever really comprehend what we did. I was a little kid and all of my feelings and experiences are filtered through that little boy’s (Champs - See Page 5)

Petition Started To Restore Toms River School Funding

By Chris Lundy T OM S R I V E R – A local resident started a Change.org petition to urge state politicians to repeal the law that will reduce state funding by a total of $70 million over the course of several years. The reduction in f u ndi ng, promulgated by Senate President Stephen Sweeney and signed into law by Gov. Phil Murphy, ties funding to enrollment. Since To m s R i v e r ’s p u b l i c school en rollment has b e e n d e cl i n i n g , t h e y would be receiving less aid. According to district records, the state aid for the most recent years has been as follows: • 2009-2010: $71,972,480 • 2010-2011: $62,185,013 • 2011-2012: $66,104,704 • 2012-2013: $67,278,259 • 2013-2014: $67,712,061

2014-2015: $68,023,721 2015-2016: $68,023,721 2016-2017: $68,342,239 2017-2018: $68,342,239 Unless things change, f ut u re f u nd i ng is expected to be: • 2018-19: $65,984,284 • 2019-20: $64,402,399 • 2020-21: $62,425,042 • 2021-22: $59,656,742 • 2022-23: $56,097,500 • 2023-24: $51,945,051 • 2024-25: $47,199,395 Accord i ng to t h is s ch e d u le , t h e a id fo r 2024-25 would be $21 m illion, or one th i rd , less than it currently is. If all of the cuts were added together, it would be a loss of $70,685,260 over the course of seven school years. The petition demands that the gover nor and state legislators return the funding and repeal the law that created the issue. (Funding - See Page 4)

By Chris Lundy TOMS R I V ER - The Township Council awarded a contract to resurface the town’s tennis courts, and will be meeting with interested parties on how to make sure tennis and pickleball players all have a place to play. The council passed a resolution awarding Nickolaus
