While King Day Rules, John Conyers Got Removed On Monday, January 15, 2018, while many Americans commemorated Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Some of those same Americans would end up criticizing even condeming the man responsible for the celebration. Four days after the assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Conyers introduced a bill to establish a federal holiday to honor the slain civil rights leader. On Nov. 2, 1983, President Ronald Regan signed a bill making Martin Luther King Day a federal holiday, effective Jan. 20, 1986. As a result of this bill, Americans now commemorate the birth and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It took Congress years to affirm the wisdom of John Conyers call for a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Yet it only took Congress days to affirm the sexual assault allegations against John Conyers and call for his resignation. It would seem that this year the celebration of the king will not include any praise of the kingmaker.

Numerous organizations and publications have recognized Boler Davis for her community service. She serves on the board of directors at General Mills, is a member of the Northwestern University McCormick Advisory Council and a board trustee of the Care House of Oakland County. Boler Davis also serves as Executive Liaison for the GM WOMEN leadership board.

Brenda Jones won and lost her bid for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District seat Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones announced her bid for Congress to represent the people of Michigan’s 13th Congressional District replacing longtime incumbent John Conyers.

Trump becoming president has had a tremendous impact on the country and has inspired many to believe that anything is possible. In Michigan, we had one of the most diverse gubernatorial primaries in the states history. The democratic primaries gave us Shri Thaneder, a successful business man with a dream of becoming the first Indian immigrant governer. We also met Abdul El-Sayed, a 33 year old charismatic physician, public health expert, and progressive activist. El-Sayed launched a respectable campaign in his bid to become the first Muslim governor. All three Democratic candidates represented a change from the middle aged white man norm often seen in politics. Ultimately Gretchen Whitmer, would go on to become Michigan's second woman governor. We also lost some revered icons and community leaders, the year 2018 has proven itself to be both an incredibly historic and at times tumultuous. We can't say it was all good, but we'd be ungrateful if we didn't give props to the good things you brought.

WHAT’S INSIDE

We at the Chronicle have gone back over our editions to select what we think were some of the most memorable moments and events in the city over the past year. No way could we include it all because, well, there was just too much going on. But we think we did our best to identify some major highlights, and we hope you will agree.

Touching Communities. Touching Lives.™ A PUBLICATION OF MGM GRAND DETROIT

2018 was a pivotal year to say the least. It would not be far fetched to classify this the Year of the Woman. Black Girl Magic was certainly on the rise as more African American women across the country declared that we will not be ignored. This year we saw more women running for political office then ever before. 2018 gave us several significant moments in women’s history. Here are just a few highlights: Stacey Abrams came pretty close to becoming the first African American woman governor in Georgia and she would've done it had it not been for that pesky voter suppression business. Texas elected the first openly LGBTQ African-American woman judge. A city in Georgia became the first to have its criminal justice system led entirely by black women. The first Muslim and Native American women were elected into Congress. Nevada became the first state with a majority female legislature. For the first time in Marine Corps history, a woman was in charge of an infantry platoon. And thats just to name a few.

A special community connection: Two holiday party traditions are treasured by MGM Grand Detroit! By Scott Talley Special to the Michigan Chronicle

To know Tyrone Chatman is to be in the company of a gentleman who is seemingly never lacking for energy and positivity. A Vietnam veteran, Mr. Chatman is the CEO of the Michigan Veterans Foundation (MVF), an organization that never stops working on behalf of veterans in serious need in our area. What began humbly within a YMCA on Detroit’s east side in 1989, MVF now has sparkling headquarters at 4626 Grand River, in a building often called the Pentagon because of its shape. Mr. Chatman takes extreme pride in describing the expanded services that MVF is now able to offer area veterans including providing case managers, social workers, nurses, and even acupuncturists for the treatment of addictions.

2018 Thanks for the memories. It has been real.

Forbes names Detroit to Top 10 ‘Coolest Cities' list

$1.00

Detroit, long known as the Motor City, and during more dire times the “Murder Capital," can add the moniker of “the Coolest City” to its image portfolio. Forbes magazine, which recently released its Top 10 list of coolest cities to visit in 2018, named Detroit the number three urban locale, behind Louisville and Philadelphia. According to Forbes, “Detroit’s renaissance is a testament to the city’s resilient, creative locals who’ve revived the once moribund metropolis and set the stage for a compelling, quirky place to explore.” The article mentions the Heidelberg Project, described as “a remarkable outdoor art space, (that) has taken over vacant lots and abandoned homes, creating beauty in an unexpected place.”

This year, embattled Michigan governor Rick Snyder signed legislation to expedite eliminating the state’s unusual¬ly punitive Driver’s Responsibility fees. Since 2003, Michigan drivers had been caught in a Catch 22, where inordinately high insurance rates often forced motor ve¬hicle operators to drive without insurance, leading to traffic violations, court fines and license suspensions, all of which were compounded by the hardship of additional fees.

“I have long opposed these fees and worked with the Legislature since taking office to phase them out,” Gov. Snyder said. “I’m pleased we found a solution that eliminates them without creating new state debt and helps remove barriers to work for more Michiganders.” The new legislation eliminated the fees on Oct. 1, 2018 instead of Oct. 1, 2019, when they were originally slated to end.
