PUBLISHER’S LETTER

APPLAUSE!

Greetings,

Welcome to the second annual edition of Applause!, a heartfelt tribute to the Standout Black Non-Profit Leaders who continue to shape Southeast Michigan into more than just a region—but a resilient, compassionate, and thriving community.

This year, these remarkable leaders face an unusually tough road ahead as they prepare their organizations to absorb looming cuts in federal funding. The challenge is steep, yet their commitment remains steadfast. They continue to serve our most vulnerable populations with passion and integrity, never wavering in their mission. In the face of adversity, they will increasingly rely on the collective support of the community—because the needs are great, and the work is vital.

That is why we shine a light on them. Their dedication to delivering uninterrupted services—whether in health care, housing, education, or workforce development—is second to none. These individuals aren’t just nonprofit executives; they are the stewards of hope, advocates for equity, and changemakers who remind us that leadership fueled by compassion can change lives.

Applause! is powered by Real Times Media and the Michigan Chronicle as our way of saying thank you—of acknowledging that real power lies not in resources alone, but in the heart-driven leadership that brings lasting impact to our neighborhoods.

We invite you to explore the stories that follow. Let them inspire you. Let them move you. And most of all, let them call you to action—to support, to uplift, and to stand beside those who serve others with such unwavering resolve.

To this year’s leaders, we offer not just recognition, but a standing ovation. May this Applause echo across our region, reminding us all that progress begins with people who care deeply—and act boldly.

Recognizingthe LeadersWhoBuild WhatSystemsNeglect

Underfunded, over-relied upon, and too often overlooked—Black nonprofit leaders across Southeast Michigan have carried communities without fanfare or front-page praise. These are the people who move quietly with purpose, creating change block by block, institution by institution. Their organizations form a network of stability in a region still grappling with disinvestment, systemic inequities, and the aftershocks ofpoliciesthatfailedtocentercommunity.

Real Times Media, in partnership with the Michigan Chronicle, has launched the inaugural edition of Applause! to uplift that work. This new recognition is not performative. It is rooted in necessity. Applause! serves as a tribute to the Black nonprofit leaders transforming Southeastern Michigan into more than just a place to live. These leaders are shaping communities that thrive, grow, and remain rooted in the legacyofcollectivecare.

This initiative emerged from community nominations. Residents named the organizations and individuals they see showing up, regardless of headlines or recognition. These are the people who answer calls for housing support, youth mentorship, healthcare access, and food security—not as a job, but as a commitment. They offer solutions with both urgency and compassion. They pour into children, advocate for elders, andbuildinfrastructurewherethestatehasoftenpulledaway.

Among those honored are names that represent decades of work, as well as emerging efforts stepping into new lanes of community impact. The Black United Fund has long stood as a financial pillar for Black-led initiatives, keeping Black dollars circulating in Black communities. The Children’s Center focuses on healing and mental health support for Detroit youth, building resilience through therapy and trauma-informed care. COMTO Michigan continues to push for equity in the transportation industry, advocating for inclusion from highways to hiring boards.

Housing and economic mobility remain at the forefront for several of these honorees. COTS provides long-term solutions to break the cycle of homelessness. Jackets for Jobs supports job seekers with professional attire and employment training. Goodwill Green Works turns environmental sustainability into a workforce pipeline, connecting community members to green careers. LISC and the Hudson-Webber Foundationplayvitalrolesincommunitydevelopment, offeringfinancial tools and grants that help neighborhood leaders reclaim agency over theirstreetsandblocks.

APPLAUSE!

Food justice remains a defining issue. Forgotten Harvest continues to fight hunger through large-scale food rescue and redistribution efforts. That work has kept households afloat during economic instability, providing not just calories, but consistency. Programs like the Detroit Area Agency on Aging address elder care, nutrition, and independence with dignity at their core, ensuring that agingDetroitersaren’tpushedtothemargins.

Health advocacy is also central to many of the organizations receiving recognition. Detroit MOTTEP Foundation leads education efforts on minority organ and tissue donation, challenging stigma while saving lives. The Rhonda Walker Foundation nurtures leadership and wellness in girls through mentorship and empowerment. Matrix Human Services and Mariner’s Inn provide comprehensive social services to individuals and families working to reclaim their lives through recovery and support.

Youth remain at the center of this ecosystem. Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit amplifies young voices through performing arts, building confidence and civic engagement at the same time. The Girl Scouts of Southeast Michigan continues to evolve its programming to reflect the needs of Black and brown girls, preparing them for leadership beyond cookies and crafts. The Police Athletic League (PAL) creates safe spaces for sports and character development, rootedinrelationshipsandresponsibility.

Legacy institutions like the Motown Museum honor cultural heritage while offering youth programming that links music to personal development. Foundations like The Skillman Foundation have centered Detroit children in their work for generations, ensuring that resources follow community needsratherthaninstitutionalconvenience.

Mentorship and education rise as unshakable pillars through the work of RESULTS Mentoring and the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. These organizations provide structure, support, andcriticalwraparoundservices.Detroit Future City advances policy and land use research that centers equity, pushing back on development models that ignore history and community voice. Knight Foundation invests in informed communities and local journalism, playingacriticalroleincivicparticipation.

These nonprofits not only provide services—they build ecosystems. They connect residents to opportunity, fill policy gaps, and remind decision-makers that lived experience matters. Their work becomes even more important when systems retract, when budgets tighten, when national conversations shift away from equity. They remain.Theyrebuild.

The need to recognize this work now reflects both urgency and responsibility. “In these times of widespread need, it becomesevermorecrucialtorecognizethosewho

indefatigably step forward with solutions, care, and boundless passion,” the announcement from Michigan Chronicle and Real Times Media read. The statement continued, “Our purpose with Applause! is to highlight those who have made it their life’s mission to serve others— particularly African Americans—and to give these unsung heroestheovationtheydeserve.”

Southeast Michigan has no shortage of barriers. Yet within this region exists a network of Black leaders who confront them with vision, strategy, and deep cultural connection. They are not waiting for invitations. They are creating the tables. They are pulling up chairs for youth, elders, returning citizens, and families navigating trauma, poverty, anduncertainty.

The Applause! honorees reflect what happens when love for the community is met with infrastructure, when innovation is paired with consistency. These organizations hold a mirror to what Southeast Michigan could become when solutions are community-built and community-led They don’t do this work for the accolades, but the impact echoes far beyond the walls of their offices and program sites.

TheMichiganChronicle’sefforttospotlighttheseleadersis not about celebration for its own sake. It is about creating a culture of acknowledgment. It is about redirecting the spotlight to the ground-level work that holds neighborhoods together when government doesn’t. These nonprofits are not secondary players in the region’s story. Theyarearchitectsofitsfuture.

The people of Detroit and Southeast Michigan nominated them because they have seen the impact firsthand. That impact looks like a student graduating with honors after years in youth programming. It looks like a family staying housed during an unexpected crisis. It looks like elders receiving care without being displaced. It looks like community members turning hardship into hope with the rightsupportsystembehindthem.

These are not feel-good stories. These are the stories of survival, strategy, and sustained commitment. These are storiesthatdeservepermanenceinourpublicmemory.

The nonprofit leaders recognized by Applause! are not anomalies. They are part of a tradition. A legacy of Black leadership that prioritizes collective well-being, long-term vision, and cultural accountability. Their work reminds us that progress requires both heart and infrastructure, vision andfollow-through.

This recognition is not the finish line. It is a formal acknowledgment of what Southeast Michigan already knows—our communities are not thriving by chance. They are held up by people who refuse to let them fall. That is worth more than applause. That is worth investment, replication, andprotection.
