What happens in the dark has come to the light in the Hill District.

Some Friday or Saturday

Two dead, several injured in six separate shooting incidents in less than 48 hours. We’re not talking about Chicago. We’re talking about Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh’s local television stations had to pull out a map to illustrate the senseless barrage of gunfire incidents that occurred throughout the city, beginning around 4 a.m. Sunday, June 25, until 10 p.m., Monday, June 26. Downtown, Homewood, North Side, Homewood again, Knoxville and East Hills. Add to that a shooting in the city of Duquesne and shots fired at an Amazon truck in Penn Hills within the same time frame, and one has to wonder just how safe they really are these

nights, maybe 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. or so, dozens of cars converge in the Lower Hill, at Wylie Avenue and Fullerton Street, about a block south of Freedom Corner. The vehicles are

doing what some people call dangerous “donuts,” or spinning around in a circular motion, leaving thick black tire marks that probably are viewable from the moon. The

people involved in the car stunts are recording it on video, causing a loud commotion, and it’s not sitting well with some senior citizens who live nearby in the K. Leroy Irvis Towers.

The seniors held a press conference at the site of the action, Thursday, June 15. Reggie Howze Sr. was among the crew that’s determined to put an end to it.

“I’ve seen it myself three times, 75 to 100 cars,” Howze told the New Pittsburgh Courier. Howze has

days in Pittsburgh.

There have been more than 60 homicides in Allegheny County in the first six months of 2023, which is on par with last year’s pace. Pittsburgh has a new police chief, Larry Scirotto, who spent 23 years on the Pittsburgh streets as an officer. If anyone knows the Pittsburgh landscape, it’s Scirotto, which is partly why Mayor Ed Gainey selected him. The mayor also was wowed by Scirotto’s policing strategy to help stop a lot of the unnecessary gun violence happening.

No one can expect Scirotto’s strategies to be fully implemented in his first few weeks on the job, but clearly, the criminals have no desire to stop their acts just because a new chief is in charge.

So far, no arrests have

Stamp honoring late Rep.

John Lewis unveiled in official ceremony at Capitol Hill

House leaders joined forces with the U.S. Postal Service to reveal a commemorative stamp paying tribute to the late Rep. John Lewis on Wednesday.

The unveiling occurred during a special event held at Capitol Hill.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Linda Earley Chastang, Lewis’ former chief of staff, were the prominent figures present.

According to a press release from the Postal Service, the stamp showcases a photograph of Lewis captured by Marco Grob for Time magazine in 2013.

The design also incorporates a 1963 image taken by Steve Schapiro outside a nonviolent protest workshop, featured in the selvage or margin of the stamp pane.

Officials called the combination of photographs a poignant reminder of Lewis’ tireless commitment to civil rights and his instrumental role in the nonviolent protest movement.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, addressing the gathering, announced that the official dedication ceremony for the John Lewis Forever stamp is scheduled for July 21 at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

DeJoy shared plans to rename Atlanta’s main post office in honor of the late congressman, acknowledging Lewis’ immeasurable contributions to the nation.

“Our nation certainly benefited from his fearlessness and his unfailing willingness to get into good trouble,” DeJoy stated.

McCarthy emphasized the significance of Lewis’ actions during the introduction of President Barack Obama at the 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, Alabama, back in 2015.

McCarthy, a Republican from California, acknowledged the power of Lewis’ words and how they transcended party lines.

“I may be in a different party; I may have different views, but I’m an American,” McCarthy asserted.

“I got goosebumps and tears thinking how far we had come and thinking that John Lewis led

the march on that bridge and led the introduction that day.”

Jeffries, the Democratic Representative from New York, expressed his

role in the civil rights movement, enduring brutal violence when Alabama state troopers fractured his skull during the infamous

1839—Cinque (original name Senghbe), after being kidnapped and sold into slavery, is placed on the Spanish slave ship Amistad. The son of a King of the Mende (Mendi) tribe in West Africa would lead the most successful revolt on a slave ship during the entire history of the slave trade. The Amistad was captured by the slaves who killed the captain and attempted to sail the ship to Africa. But due to delaying tactics by the remaining White crew, the ship was captured by a U.S. naval ship. Cinque and the rebellious slaves were taken to New Haven, Conn., and put on trial for murder. Amazingly they won their case and were allowed to return to Africa.

1971—Muhammad Ali is allowed to box again after winning a victory in the United States Supreme Court. The court overturned his conviction for refusing to be drafted and serve in the United States war in Vietnam. When asked how he could claim to be a pacifist opposed to war while being a professional boxer, Ali’s most frequent response was, “I am not going 10,000 miles from here to help murder and kill and burn poor people to help continue the domination of White slave masters over the darker people.”

The reasons for her suicide were unclear. She left a note which read in part “I’m tired. I’m tired.” Hyman was 45—six days short of her 46 birthday—when she died.

belief that the stamp would forever symbolize Lewis’ significant contributions and serve as a tribute to his unwavering dedication as the

“Bloody Sunday” incident in Selma in 1965.

In July 2020, Lewis became the first Black lawmaker to lie in state at the Capitol, a testament

1978—The United States Supreme Court hands down the Bakke Decision which undermined affirmative action programs that had been designed to give preference to Blacks and other minorities in education and industry in order to compensate for decades of past discrimination. Although the court ruled affirmative action programs were constitutional; it struck down the use of quotas and that had the effect of weakening the affirmative action programs.

1970—NAACP Chairman Stephen Gill Spottswood creates a national controversy by telling the annual convention of the civil rights organization that the administration of President Richard Nixon was “anti-Negro” and was pursuing policies “inimical to the needs and aspirations” of African-Americans.

1863—Walter Francis White is born in Atlanta, Ga. For nearly 25 years White was one of the most influential Black leaders in the nation. He headed the NAACP from 1931 to 1955. However, he first received national attention because of the way he looked. As a light-complexioned Black man with blue eyes, White was able to infiltrate racist groups and investigate planned brutality against Blacks. But in 1919, he barely escaped with his life while attempting to investigate the deadly Elaine Race Riot in Phillips County, Ark., which had left more than 200 Blacks dead. Somehow the mob discovered that White was in the area and set out to lynch him. But he was able to catch a train back to Little Rock before he could be identified. While on the train, the White conductor told him he was leaving town too early because the mob had discovered “a damn yellow Nigger passing for White and the boys are going to get him.” White would die in New York City in 1955. His autobiography is entitled “A Man Called White.”

1899—Thomas Andrew Dorsey is born in Villa Rica, Ga. Dorsey is widely credited with being the “Father of Gospel Music.” During the early 1930s, after leaving Atlanta for Chicago, Dorsey combined gospel and the blues while performing under the name “Georgia Tom.” He wrote more than 400 gospel and blues songs including his most famous “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” He died in Chicago in 1993 at the age of 96. Once asked to comment on his life, Dorsey said, “I had hope, faith, courage, aspiration and most of all determination to accomplish something in life.”

conscience of Congress. He called Lewis one of the country’s greatest sons and deemed it fitting for such an influential figure to be recognized with a Forever stamp.

Lewis, a Democrat representing Georgia, served in the House of Representatives from 1987 until his passing on July 17, 2020, at 80, after battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Known as the “conscience of Congress,” Lewis dedicated his life to advocating for peaceful protests and equality.

An original member of the Freedom Riders, Lewis played a pivotal

to his indelible mark on American history.

Even after his passing, his words have continued to inspire and motivate, as evidenced by his 2020 New York Times op-ed, where he urged others to carry the torch and fight for their beliefs. His famous phrase, “good trouble,” remains a rallying cry for those seeking equality and justice. Postal officials said the John Lewis Forever stamp is a lasting tribute to a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to making the United States a better place for all its citizens.

1972—The United States Supreme Court rules in a historic five to four decision that as it was being carried out in America, the death penalty was “cruel and unusual punishment” and thus violated the Constitution. The ruling also suggested that the death penalty was racist. At the time 483 of the approximately 600 people waiting to be executed in the nation were Blacks or members of other minority groups. However, since the decision, at least 38 states and the federal government have re-instituted the death penalty by supposedly meeting Supreme Court guidelines.

1847—Dred Scott (and his wife, Harriet) files his famous lawsuit in St. Louis Circuit Court arguing that after living with a slave master for several years in non-slave territories, they should be considered free. After several twists and turns, the case makes its way to the United States Supreme Court where the court rules against Scott and Justice Roger B. Taney writes what may be the most racist decision ever rendered by the court. Taney wrote that Scott was “private property” and had no right to sue in federal court. He also declared that Blacks were not citizens of America and never could be. Then he topped the decision by writing of Scott and all Blacks, “being of inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the White race…they have no rights which the White man is bound to respect.”

1917—Glamorous Singer-Actress Lena Horne is born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to an upper-income Black family. She would perform with Jazz greats such as Artie Shaw, Teddy Wilson, Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. She also became the first African-American woman to sign a long-term contract with a major Hollywood studio. But she became disenchanted with Hollywood and returned to her nightclub career. She is best known for her 1940s hit “Stormy Weather.” In her later years she became active in civil rights including participation in Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1963 March on Washington. Horne died on May 9, 2010 at the age of 92.

1967—Major Robert H. Lawrence is named the first Black U.S. astronaut in the NASA space program. The Chicago-born Lawrence would later die under somewhat mysterious circumstances during a training exercise in December 1967.

1974—A deranged Black man, Marcus Chennault, shoots and kills the mother of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Along with Alberta Christine Williams King, a church deacon was killed and another church member wounded. Chennault, a Dayton, Ohio, native, reportedly claimed that Black Christians were deceiving and misleading Black people.

1995—Song-stylist and singer Phyllis Hyman commits suicide in New York City shortly before she was scheduled to perform at a concert. Hyman was one of the premier female vocalists of her day.

1777—Vermont becomes first U.S. territory to abolish slavery. By 1783, New Hampshire and Massachusetts had followed Vermont’s lead. The abolition of slavery was formally placed in the Vermont Constitution, which was formally adopted on July 8, 1777. A major force in the early abolition movement was a group known as the Rights of Man Movement.

1822—Denmark Vesey and five of his co-conspirators are hanged in Charleston, S.C. Vesey’s “crime” had been the organization of the largest slave rebellion in American history. But the insurrection was betrayed by a “house slave” before it could be implemented. Vesey was actually a former slave who had purchased his freedom.

1908—Thurgood Marshall is born in Baltimore, Md. Marshall would go on to become chief counsel for the NAACP and the lead attorney in the Brown v. Board of Education case, which led to the desegregation of the nation’s schools. President Lyndon Johnson would, in June 1967, nominate him to be the first African-American Justice on the United States Supreme Court because as Johnson put it, “It was the right thing to do and the right time to do it.”

1943—Lt. Charles Hall became the first African-American pilot to shoot down a Nazi warplane during World War II. Hall was from Brazil, Ind.

• JULY 3

1775—Prince Hall founds African Lodge Number One—the first Black lodge of Free Masons in the United States. Hall would become the pioneer builder of Black Masons in America. He was also a leading voice against slavery and for Black rights in the North.

1962—The first Black man permitted to play Major League Baseball, Jackie Robinson, is named to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

• JUNE 4

1922—Samuel L. Gravely is born. Gravely became the first African American admiral in the United States Navy and the first African American to command a U.S. warship. The Richmond, Va., native died in 2004 at the age of 82. 1972—College professor and activist Angela Davis is acquitted of charges that she assisted and conspired with the young men involved in a deadly 1970 shootout at the Marin County courthouse in California. The assault on the courthouse was an attempt to free imprisoned Black activist George Jackson. At least three people were killed during the escape attempt. Davis, a Birmingham, Ala., native who became a member of the Communist Party, spent 16 months in prison but on this day in 1972 she was found not guilty of all charges by an allWhite San Jose, Calif., jury.

1973—Arna Bontemps dies at the age of 72 in Nashville, Tenn. Born in Louisiana, Bontemps became one of the key figures in the Black artistic and cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. Bontemps was a prolific writer and poet.

Seniors want the dangerous, illegal car stunts in the Hill District to stop

only been living at the towers for a few months.

“If this exact same scenario was going on anywhere in Squirrel Hill or Fox Chapel, it wouldn’t have lasted 20 minutes, let alone two years. The fact that it’s the Hill District is why nothing’s been done (about it), I’m convinced of that.”

“The danger to public safety, damage to property and noise level disruption is of great concern and needs to stop,” Tate, a retired Pittsburgh Police detective, said in a statement. “Seniors living at K. Leroy Irvis Towers are being tormented by the noise during the night and causing them fear as this is happen-

ing just yards from their building.”

Tate said it’s difficult to know exactly when the entourage of cars will show up in the Lower Hill, performing their best “Fast and Furious” stunts, like they’re in a movie. Messages permeate the online community, but they’re encrypted, or said in a way that masks exactly when the pop-up event will take place. It doesn’t give the seniors a chance to warn Pittsburgh Police beforehand.

Inside the actual City of Pittsburgh, it’s hard to find room to perform the illegal car stunts, burnouts, etc. But in other cities that aren’t as dense, like Chicago, New Orleans, Atlanta

and Detroit, this activity is commonplace, although police attempt to “break it up” when they see it happening. It just so happens that the Lower Hill is in the process of being transformed into the headquarters for First National Bank, as a 24-story structure is in the making. The Civic Arena is long gone, the area now a bunch of open space and parking lots, and Wylie and Fullerton is a somewhat-hidden intersection there that

is only regularly used by PRT buses, which has turned into Ground Zero for the car stunts.

The seniors, like Gloria Jones, said at the news conference in the Hill that they’ve “called the Pittsburgh Police several times, and they seem to

come but they leave and the racing still continues.”

Tate said: “We’re not here to bash the city, but what we’re here for is to make sure (the seniors’) voices are heard.”

In a statement, Tate added: “This is a public

safety issue and a nuisance to seniors who wake up in fear every night that it takes place. It is also dangerous to the young people who perform this stunt burnout driving while crowds stand around them and cheer as the vehicles spin out of control.”

City of Pittsburgh Public Information Officer Cara Cruz told the Courier on June 27 that the car stunts do happen “in other parts of the city from time to time.” But specific to Wylie and Fullerton, she said that “officers respond to disrupt the behavior and issue citations when they can. It’s important to note that officers will not pursue vehicles that flee from the area.”

Cruz also said that “because this is not a well-traveled spot, police don’t often know about it until someone calls when the noise becomes disruptive. Still, police encourage anyone who witnesses this behavior to call them immediately.”

Howze, one of the seniors, told the Courier that Pittsburgh Police need to make stopping the activity in the Lower Hill a priority. “If the police give it respect, the other people will give it respect, too.”

Side. Later that afternoon, a man was shot in the shoulder and neck on Kelly Street, this time near Frankstown Avenue. On Monday morning, June 26, two men were found shot in Knoxville near Bausman Street around 4 a.m. And later that night, a man was found shot and killed on Wilner Drive in East

Hills. He was identified as 24-year-old Earl Jordan.

In the Duquesne incident, a man was shot in the face on Duquesne Place Drive around 9 p.m. Sunday, June 25. And in the incident in Penn Hills, someone fired shots at an Amazon truck driver who was making deliveries on Newfield Drive around 3

p.m., Sunday, June 25. Even though it’s officially summertime, a drive through Pittsburgh’s Black neighborhoods shows that fewer people are outside. Less kids are playing outside. Less adults are sitting on their porches. But who could blame them? Violence in Pittsburgh can happen at any time, any place.

Many parents are telling their children to stay inside.

Shawnell Pinkston is a cousin of Rankin, who lost his life Sunday morning on the North Side. She told WPXI-TV (Channel 11): “Dashawn was a fun-loving guy. He’d give his shirt off for anyone.”

The New Pittsburgh Courier has learned that Mayor Ed Gainey’s Chief of Staff, Jake Wheatley and community advocate Jala Rucker were appointed to the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (HACP) Board of Commissioners. These appointments will assist the authority in fulfilling its goal of providing decent and affordable housing regardless of income, a June 23 release from the City of Pittsburgh, said.

“This administration is committed to residents having a safe and affordable place to live. Jake and Jala have a passion for helping people and bring needed insight along with experience to make sure this authority stays on task, “said Mayor Ed Gainey, in a statement.

Wheatley is a long-time resident of the Historic Hill District and prior to joining the administration, he was the longest-serving African American in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Wheatley served as the first African American chair for the House

Professional Licensure Committee, overseeing the 29 professional boards and commissions that set standards and practices for our workforce.

“I’m honored to join the HACP board as we strive to help families live in communities that are welcoming and safe,” Wheatley said in a statement. Rucker is a HACP resident and currently an education outreach manager with RentHelpPgh, an organization designed to assist those in the community who find themselves facing an eviction notice. Her role will be to ensure that HACP residents have a voice on the Board of Directors

“Being on this board gives me the opportunity to engage with various organizations, service providers, and government to ensure we’re meeting the needs of the community,” said Rucker. Their appointments were made official following confirmation from Pittsburgh City Council.

Mike Tomlin is a coach for the ages

When the Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Club, Michael Pettaway Tomlin, became the first head coach in the history of the National Football League to go 16 seasons without a losing season, lo and behold, suddenly it seemed as if many of the writers located inside and outside of the Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania market experienced an epiphany. Many folks received this divine revelation as they focused their “telescopes of discovery” on coaching candidates residing on planets located in galaxies far, far away. During the galactic explorations of most of those scribes, almost all of them reluctantly came to the realization that the simple fact-Mike Tomlin can coach, period. Most of them have searched for decades looking for a coach that they felt worthy enough and qualified enough to patrol the hallowed halls and sidelines of the Black and Gold.

“Hey, Mike Tomlin was way too young and far too Black to hold such a lofty position in the halls of Steeler lore and history.”

The only person that didn’t hold that opinion was the late Dan Rooney. The Steelers morphed into greatness, not because of Chuck Noll, Bill Nunn Jr. Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin, or any other player, coach, or administrator. My fa-

ther, Oprah Elliott Bruce, once said: “In this one life that we have on this earth, we either evolve or we dissolve, there is no gray area.” Bob Dylan’s viewpoint was, “If you’re not busy being born, you’re busy dying.”

The vision of Dan Rooney provided assurances that he would not permit the football club founded by his father, the late Art Rooney Sr., to dissolve and perish but rather to use the fertilizer of losing and incompetence to plant and nurture the seeds and trees and harvest the fruit from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ “grove of greatness.”

Mike Tomlin has succeeded because his success was being nurtured before he even realized that the seeds had even been planted. When Tomlin ascended to the upper echelons of the Pittsburgh Steelers hierarchy, that stage was already set. He wasn’t taught to lie, cheat, and steal to create and display false standards of excellence. The only tenets that were acceptable to his employer were honesty, integrity, and finally, loyalty.

Dan Rooney would not be asked to stand in the gap for Mike Tomlin if Tomlin practiced and was convicted of using illegal methods to cheat and undermine the rules of fair and equal play just to gain an edge over the competition.

Even when Bill “Belicheat” was exposed cheating by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Goodell end up fining Bill Belichick a measly and mealymouthed $500,000 and the Patriots organization $250,000 and stripped the club of its 2008 first-round draft pick. However, fast forward. Mike Tomlin was fined $100,000 for allegedly interfering with a kickoff return at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on November 28, 2013, during a primetime Thanksgiving Day game. “Belicheat” was fined $500,000 for seven years of skullduggery. Yet, Tomlin’s act took less than 10 seconds. There is no way in hell that the $500,000 penalty for “Spygate” could even remotely be considered fair when compared to levying a $100,000 fine for a two-second violation of tripping a player. Mike Tomlin wasn’t watching film and strategically placing videographers at different positions to steal signals of the opposition just to give him insight into the perfect time and field position to trip

the Ravens kick returner Jacoby Jones. Another albatross placed upon the shoulders of Tomlin is, he is too much of a player’s coach and because of that connection to the players, he loses control of the locker room at the drop of a hat. Let’s revisit another lack of control and discipline issue in the Steelers locker room echoing from the past. During a less-than-stellar period during the journey of the Black and Gold, there was a time that the greatness of the Steelers might have taken a short hiatus. That time could’ve occurred shortly before the Steelers 2000 season on June 7, 2000. Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher was still the “Big Man On Campus” when a wild fight broke out in the Steelers locker room. In a 2019 article for The Atlantic, former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sportswriter Ed Bouchette recalled the incident this way.

“Earl Holmes and Richard Huntley engaged in a heated fight on the practice field. Three writers asked Huntley what happened on the field between him and Holmes,” Bouchette wrote. “Huntley said it was over and done. Holmes burst through the reporters and screamed at Huntley, ‘You want a piece of Big E?’ Holmes then picked up a wooden stool. Huntley hollered, ‘Put the chair down and come get

some.’ That is when all hell broke loose. Other players joined the fray, some trying to break it up, others to get involved. The moment linebacker Jason Gildon picked up his wooden chair and began swinging it around the locker room, I scooted to a safer place. That brawl spread all over the locker room.”

Where was the discipline of the spit-shining, whip-carrying Bill Cowher when there was “blood on the Steelers dance floor” on June 7, 2000? Did the stern-faced, gran-

ite-jawed Bill Cowher have to seek refuge for himself? Where were the ear-splitting calls for discipline then? Well, nobody is saying. Have there been any locker room-clearing brawls during the tenure of Mike Tomlin? As Homey the Clown would say, “I don’t think so, Homey don’t play that.” People keep saying, “We fall down but we get up.” Mike Tomlin doesn’t have to worry about getting up because he is not falling.

GET USED TO HER... IT’S THE ‘LAW’

I should point out to you that in the sportswriting world, or in “the business” as they say, there are terms that can describe this story... “a lay up,” “easy call,” “a given”... some would even say “a gift.”

Given that the subject of this story is so matter of fact that the writer has it “handed to him”...see there’s another one.

That was in fact the case when I had the opportunity to interview Monroe Law of Franklin Regional High School and is setting the WPIAL track world ablaze!

Well, hold on, wait a minute. I’ve decided not to take the “soft pitch”... yep, did it again. No, I am going to reverse the assumed thought process and try to make you think this was hard work.

We’ll get back on the track momentarily. But how ‘bout this? Monroe has a grade point average on a PA statewide 3A level of 4.46! Seriously, she has never received a grade lower than an “A” in her educational efforts thus far. And she is sixth in the state for Future Business Leaders of America’s Business Law and third for Jack & Jill’s Freshman Academic Award.

Now I know what you’re thinking. The academics had to come from mom! Wrong, my friend, you don’t own one of the states’s top businesses by accident...that being

House of Law Funeral Home and, for that matter, follow in the footsteps of his brilliant father Percy “Buddy” Law and the Law Multiple Funeral Homes Dynasty by accident. And to add icing on that cake, she has her academic sights set on the likes of Stanford or Duke and has the necessary keys to unlock the doors of any of the Ivy League schools...for those of you just coming out of hibernation, that includes Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Penn, and Cornell. Heck, when I was a freshman, I only had my sights set on Jackie Wallace and an original hot dog! (Full disclaimer to protect the innocent, Jackie Wallace didn’t even know I existed...but I digress.)

While I continue to try to make this look hard, the other “hand off”...last one I promise...I was made aware of, that many of you probably didn’t know is the DNA linkage. Her father, Dwight Law, was an accomplished athlete in both football, baseball and track at Donora High School before a severe injury altered his athletic plan, back in the day when men were men and you had to pay serious dues. Her mother, Chandra, who admits she was not an athlete, but you can’t tell by looking at her, and you immediately see where Monroe gets her long legs. But hold on, here’s “the toss up”... OK, that one I couldn’t help – my bad...the lineage doesn’t stop there. Her uncle is Chuck Sanders, Penn Hills H.S. football standout, Slippery Rock University legend, Heisman Trophy candidate and NFL Pittsburgh Steeler. Along with that, her cousins are Hall of

Fame baseball superstars Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. “Junior”!

I think it’s safe to say something’s in that Donora Dragon water! Now to the matter at hand, because none of what has been offered takes away from the hard work, non-stop effort, and self-awareness of what it takes to be great that Monroe Law has and clearly demonstrates. Neither time nor space allows for the continued growing list of accomplishments she has achieved on the track. But here are the big ones. Franklin Regional school record in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, and, of course, in so doing broke WPIAL and stadium records. Then on to PIAA for statewide competition where she finished fifth in the 100 yard dash and remember, SHE WAS ONLY A FRESHMAN!

Most impressively, I spoke with Monroe immediately after track practice at the Penn Hills H.S. track where she gets her next level training as a member of the Penn Hills Eagles Track Club under the superior tutelage and guidance of track coach Chuck Carter! With a chill in the air, aching legs, and clearly tired from a tough workout, she never wavered or complained, or for that matter, even paused. She met the moment, handled it like the mature student-athlete beyond her years that she is, and crossed the finish line in grand fashion...

AS A MATTER OF FACT, SHE MADE IT LOOK EASY. IT’S THE “LAW!”

Freedom from fraud: Protecting your identity and finances

For New Pittsburgh Courier Constance Etude had a close encounter with fraud in 2020, but her instinct saved her.

“I got a phone call from a woman saying she was a customer service agent for my health insurance provider,” the 65-year-old remembers. “She told me she needed to verify my social security number. It all seemed off. The phone line was statick-y and I didn’t recognize the area code. So

information sharing. Use antivirus software when necessary.

Checking Your Credit Reports Often

I ended the call.”

A month later, Etude saw a local news segment about a scheme to steal people’s data.

There were just under 2 million reports of imposter scams and identity theft that year, according to the Federal Trade Commission. That’s nearly 40 percent of total reports. Fraud takes place in many ways and for many reasons —from intentional data breaches within companies to family members trying to access credit lines. As we age, it’s important to know how to minimize risk. Consider these strategies:

Using Your Debit Cards Sparingly

Want to dispute a charge from a merchant? There’s no dispute process for debit cards. Charge purchases to a reliable credit card. If you misplace the card, then lock it immediately.

Establishing a Trustworthy System for Your Online Accounts

Use a secure Internet connection when handling personal account information whenever possible. Use secure sites, too. Change your account passwords and pin numbers regularly. Be careful about sharing important data over the phone. Opt out of

Take a look at your credit report with the three national credit monitoring agencies—Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion—regularly. It’s helpful to know what your credit score is before making a big purchase or refinancing. Look for inaccuracies and missing information. You can currently get a free weekly credit report here. Also, most banks provide monthly FICO scores as a courtesy for being a customer.

Checking Utility Bills Often

You’ll be able to see charges that aren’t adding up and dispute them immediately.

Keeping Your Personal Information Private

When You Have Visitors

Say you’re having your living space renovated, make sure your personal information is stored in a safe place. Also, invest in a shredder to securely get rid of documents that you no longer need. It’s a good practice to trust someone with your personal information in the event of an emergency.

Listen to Your Intuition

There may not be a way to avoid a large-scale data breach, but you can at least take precautions.

If you want to read more about common scams and ways to report them, then start by visiting the Internet Crime Complaint Center and Fraud.org.

Regardless of household income, most people are struggling financially. That’s right, it doesn’t matter if a person’s household income is $20,000 per year or $200,000, it’s hard making ends meet. Life is expensive. It costs you $150 just to go outside. Just think back to the shutdown during COVID. People had to stay inside. No one was spending money on anything other than essential items such as food, housing, transportation and utilities. The end result, the personal savings rate soared in the United States. Prior to COVID, the average person saved $7 for every $100 of disposable income. During COVID, the average person saved $33 for every $100 of disposable income. This proves a couple of things. 1. The basic necessities of life are in fact expensive. But lifestyle is what breaks the bank. 2. When people are focused on saving money, they will find a way to do so.

How did I conclude that most people are struggling financially? Forbes Magazine reported that 78 percent of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Marketwatch reported that 49 percent of Americans earning $100,000 or more are living paycheck to paycheck. CNBC reported that 30 percent of Americans earning $250,000 or more are living paycheck to paycheck. According to the Fed’s Economic Well-Being Report, 37 percent of Americans lack enough money to cover a $400 emergency expense. According to

If you’ve ever had a goal and had trouble sticking to it, you’ve probably gotten advice like this: Find someone to hold you accountable. Trying to exercise more? Get a workout buddy. Want to eat better? Involve your family in planning healthy meals.

The same advice works for another common goal: Managing money better. Whether you want to save more, stick to a budget, pay off debt, or work toward a big purchase, you may benefit from an accountability partner. That’s where financial coaching and counseling come in. Financial coaches work with clients to transform their financial outlook by helping them build skills in areas like budgeting or building credit, and by holding clients accountable on their journey to achieve their financial goals. That description is from the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, or LISC, a community development organization with a network of Financial Opportunity Center® partners where clients receive financial coaching at no cost.

Laura D’Alessandro, LISC’s financial health director, says effective financial coaching is tailored to each individual client.

“Everybody’s financial picture looks different and what we are trying to do is help people achieve financial goals,” D’Alessandro says. “Each coach assumes that people

Most Americans aren’t saving enough for retirement. According to the National Institute on Retirement Security, more than 75 percent of Americans have retirement savings that fall short of saving 15 percent of their income and 21 percent of Americans aren’t saving for retirement at all. According to Yahoo! Finance, only 14 percent of Americans have $100,000 or more saved in their retirement accounts. In fact, about 78 percent of Americans have $50,000 or less saved for retirement. Respondents aged 65 and older have the most saved but, according to the survey, just 36 percent of that age group have $100,000 or more saved, and almost 24 percent haven’t saved anything at all.

As you can see from published statistics, most people are struggling financially. Most people will retire or die broke. Most people are failing when it comes to managing money, saving for emergencies, and retiring with mega money in the bank.

Nobody plans to fail, they just fail to plan.

In today’s fast-paced world, personal finance plays a crucial role in achieving financial stability and building a secure future. It encompasses various aspects, such as budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt. This article aims to provide valuable insights and practical tips to help you take control of your finances and make informed decisions.

1. Establishing Financial Goals: The first step towards effective personal finance management is setting clear financial goals. Whether it’s paying off debt, buying a house, saving for college, saving for retirement, or building wealth, defining your objectives will provide direction and motivation. It will give you the purpose you need to make the necessary sacrifices that are required to win with money.

2. Creating a Budget:

A budget is a fundamental tool for managing personal finances. It involves tracking your income, expenses, and identifying areas where you can cut back or save.

If you’ve already cut expenses to the bare bones, a budget forces you to take a hard look at your income, helping you to calcu-

“When an individual engages with a financial coach or counselor, they get to identify what their own unique goals are and what they want to achieve for themselves— whether it’s to save money, decrease their debt, get a better credit score, or even establish a credit score,” Price says. “Instead of that one-time class or webinar, if you meet with a coach many times over a period of time, you are meeting with somebody to hold you accountable toward doing the things you said you wanted to do.”

late how much more income you need to bring in so that you pay bills, save, and have a life free of mounting debt, worry and struggle. Create a budget that accounts for your income and expenses, and make sure that you include all your monthly bills and other expenses. By creating a realistic budget, you can allocate your resources efficiently and prevent overspending.

3. Creating Wiggle Room:

The gap between your income and expenses is the tool you’ll use to pay off debt, cash flow emergencies, and save for future goals. The larger the margin between your income and expenses, the faster you can reach your financial goals. Increasing income, reducing expenses, and sound money management is how you create wiggle room.

4. Managing Debt:

Debt can be a significant burden if not handled properly. Understanding the different types of debt, such as credit cards, student loans, or mortgages, and developing a plan to pay them off as soon as possible is essential.

5. Saving and Emergency Funds:

Saving money is a critical aspect of personal finance. Saving money is the cornerstone of sound money management. Establishing an emergency fund that covers 3-6 months of living expenses provides a

As a seasoned financial services professional, Alexis adds even greater strength and agility to TALI’s power-packed leadership team and will usher the Institute to new levels of efficiency as it continues to expand nationally.

“Alexis will play an essential role in equipping us to scale our success through efficient strategies, tools, and processes as we begin to grow nationally,” states

Evan Frazier, President & CEO of The Advanced Leadership Institute. “As someone who currently serves as a TALI executive mentor for our Executive Leadership Academy, Alexis has proven that she is familiar with and committed to our model and vision. Her strong desire to help Black professionals

advance their careers combined with her years of work in corporate America, background in education, and desire to help the community, make her a great fit for TALI’s VP of Operations role.”

Alexis’ impressive career includes past employment at PNC, National City, and Bank of New York Mellon.

Most recently, she was Senior Vice President at Tristate Capital Bank. Having developed a reputation as a business and community leader, Alexis’ expertise is expected to enhance TALI’s ability to be highly responsive in the face of developing organizational needs.

Alexis will work closely with the CEO and will provide support in areas such as finance, human resources, marketing, technology, and facilities.

“After observing TALI’s early victories, specifically their success in advancing the careers of Black professionals, it became clear TALI’s vision integrated with my own desire to impact the next generation of leaders in a meaningful way,” ex-

plained Alexis. “As I transition into this new role, I look forward to helping to uphold and advance TALI’s mission, while also making a positive impact on the communities the Institute serves.”

Alexis refers to “faith, family, and service to the community” as the pillars of her existence and is a known advocate of education. She has done meaningful work with many local non-profits including Junior Achievement, The Pittsburgh Public Schools, and Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship, to name a few. Currently, Alexis serves on the board of the Jack and Jill Foundation of America, is an Eastern Region Jack and Jill officer, and previously served as President of Jack and Jill’s Pittsburgh Chapter.

Alexis is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and their School of Education. As a continuous learner, Alexis recently completed a Product Strategy program through Northwestern’s Kellogg Executive Education Program.

Alexis was selected from a broad executive search that yielded over 120 applicants for the position and will replace Interim VP of Operations, Marvin B. Prentice. The organization is grateful to Mr. Prentice for stepping into this role over the last several months while the extensive search took place to bring Alexis James Steals to TALI.

The Shapiro-Davis Administration is opening up the doors of opportunity for small and diverse businesses

For New Pittsburgh Courier

When Gov. Josh Shapiro took office, he committed to making our government work for all Pennsylvanians—pledging to expand state contracting opportunities for our small minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses that have for too long been left behind. Under the Shapiro-Davis administration’s leadership, commonwealth agencies will now align and start the work of improving the experience for our small business community and widening a currently narrow gate to state contracting opportunities.

As secretary for the Department of General Services (DGS), I was immediately charged with evaluating the services and programs provided by the department’s Bureau of Diversity, Inclusion and Small Business Opportunities (BDISBO), which aims to create a more fair and equitable landscape in the competition for state contracts. In doing so, my team and I were able to identify some immediate actions that can be taken by our agency in support of Shapiro’s commitments.

According to our most recent data for July 2021 to June 2022, the commonwealth spent approximately $4.9 billion on goods and services. Of that spend, nearly $1 billion went directly to small businesses—but

tive in Pennsylvania. Under the Shapiro-Davis administration, DGS has already cut the time it takes to certify a small business from 15 to 10 days, and within the next week we will begin Supplier Search workshops aimed at educating small minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses on the available contracting opportunities within our construction and commodities bureaus.

where more attention is needed for improvement.

The governor’s commitment to our small and diverse business community spreads far and wide. As part of his first budget, the governor has proposed a $20 million investment in the Historically Disadvantaged Business Assistance Program, which provides working capital loans to minority-owned and woman-owned small businesses.

The governor’s budget also calls for an $8.6 million increase for the Department of Community and Economic Development’s Keystone Communities Program to support improvements in Pennsylvania Main Streets, particularly in rural and low-income communities.

to boost our economy and support small and minority-owned businesses. U.S. Census data revealed that in 2020, minority business ownership represented only 20 percent of total U.S. businesses, and according to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Development Agency, minority-owned businesses lack equal access to capital and face disparities when it comes to opportunities in government contracting.

We are taking action to change the narra-

In addition to the workshops, DGS will begin an education campaign through local advertisements to help small businesses better understand how to navigate the commonwealth’s contracting processes through the entire lifecycle, from registration all the way through to when they are awarded a contract. We will also work to ensure that subcontractors — which are typically smaller businesses — are paid for their work promptly by reducing the timeframe for prime contractors to pay subcontractors to 10 days from when the prime contractor receives their payment from the state.

Finally, we will engage with other state agencies to identify ways they can increase their spending with small businesses through our Small Business Reserve Program, which sets aside contracting opportunities specifically for small businesses competition.

All of these actions will be tied to metrics in order to track our progress or show us

The Shapiro-Davis administration is taking action to cut the bureaucratic red tape and make government work better to serve all Pennsylvanians. From educating small businesses on the opportunities available to them to identifying ways for other agencies to engage with small minority-owned businesses, the Department of General Services is committed to improving the state contracting process. Together, we will look to create real opportunity for our small and diverse businesses across the commonwealth.

FINANCIAL COACHING FROM B1 safety net during unexpected financial setbacks. From a practical perspective, trying to save 3-months of living expenses for emergencies isn’t doable when your income is tied down making payments on expenses and debts. Therefore I recommend a starter emergency fund of $500 to $1,000 for emergencies. After you pay off some debt, it will be easier to save 3-6 months worth of living expenses. Additionally, saving for short-term goals and retirement should be incorporated into your financial plan.

Black male health is in a crisis

June is widely known as Men’s Health Month. It is a time of year that men focus on their physical and mental well-being with the aim of prolonging life with a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, African American males many times suffer from health disparities that put them at a disadvantage when trying to live a disease-free life.

There are approximately 21 million Black men in the U.S. However, it is common knowledge in academic and medical circles that African American men consistently suffer worse health conditions and disparities than any other racial group in the country. Statistics reveal the average life expectancy of Black men in the U.S. is 72 years, the shortest lifespan of all groups by race and gender—except Native American men.

The Center for Health of Minority Males in its “Black Men’s Health Handout” reports 38 percent of Black men 20 years or older are obese; 23 percent of Black males 18 years and older smoke cigarettes; 40 percent of Black men 20 years old and older have hypertension; 40 percent of Black men die prematurely from heart disorders as opposed to 21 percent of White males; and African American males are five times more likely to die from HIV/AIDS than their White counterparts.

There are several reasons for these disparities in ailments, such as systemic racism, a lack of affordable, quality health care, cultural barriers, poverty, and employment that does not offer health insurance.

Roland J. Thorpe of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center for Public Health said some Black men think health repair is more important than health maintenance.

Another reason for Black male reluctance to monitor health is knowledge of the infamous Tuskegee study in which Black men in that city were knowingly withheld treatment for syphilis from 1932 to 1972 to examine its trajectory.

Black men should be urged by their families and friends in fraternal, social, and church groups and at work to monitor their health. This is a solvable problem, with the help of everyone in a Black male’s village.

(TriceEdneyWire)—To say that recent news has been compelling, fast-paced, and exciting would be an understatement.  Whether it was Kevin McCarthy organizing a censure action against Adam Schiff for his participation in the Trump impeachment trial, the search for and ultimate loss of life in the Titan/Titanic Tour submersible tragedy, or the House floor verbal argument between two crazies, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, the news has been “hot and heavy.”  The far-reaching consequences of these events will have to take a back seat to another.

Without argument, the most consequential news story of recent weeks has been the indictment of Trump for his mishandling of government documents at Mar-a-Lago.  I usually give sufficient time for “the dust to settle” before I comment on events, but this indictment for Trump’s mishandling of classified documents is too important to leave to “settle.”  Although too many Americans have become desensitized to Trump’s antics and their seriousness, I find the potential for damage to national security related to this event to be a compelling reason for near-immediate comment.

I have read the indictment and found it to be sobering and frightening.  My political orientation may be progressive, but I am reasonable enough to understand the numerous international AND internal threats which exist to the security and sovereignty of the nation.  I am sensible enough to realize that my aims and aspirations for the futures of myself,

my race, and my nation cannot be achieved in the dystopian, anti-democratic autocracy that is philosophically embraced by one political party (Hint: Republican).

I encourage my readers to take the time and opportunity to read the full text of the indictment.  At first, you may consider it a word salad of acronyms, but further reading will show the lengths to which Trump went to violate and obstruct the requirements of the law.  A full reading will illuminate the expectations of an individual formerly entrusted with the nation’s most critical secrets and his alleged disregard of his obligations under the law.

The indictment reads in stark contrast to the myriad of excuses offered by Trump before and since his Miami indictment.  Paragraph #17 of the indictment reads: Pursuant to Executive Order 13526, information classified at any level could be lawfully accessed only by persons determined by an appropriate United States government official to be eligible for access to classified information and who had signed an approved non-disclosure agreement, who received a security clearance, and who had a “need-to-know” the

classified information.  After his presidency, TRUMP was not authorized to possess or retain classified documents.

Few will ever know or be able to accurately speculate whether Trump was motivated by arrogance, avarice, or the potential to use the classified information to leverage an unknown outcome (all three have been suggested by media sources).  Whatever his motivation, his possession and refusal to return classified documents as requested by the National Archives and Records Administration, his futile and misguided attempts to hide classified documents, and his attempts to involve his employees and attorneys in this effort were criminal. If this document case does go to trial, the fate of the nation will rest in the character and judgment of twelve, as yet unknown Americans.  The trial will test Trump’s 2016 claim that he could shoot someone in Times Square and not lose any voters.  It will test the premise that no one is above the law.  And it will, invariably, define the path that this nation will take to the future.  It will test whether twelve citizens, regardless of political affiliation or personal ideals, will have enough concern for the nation to objectively evaluate the evidence to reach a fair and appropriate verdict.  I anxiously wait for their decision.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of the illustrious Kennedy dynasty, is making an unlikely run for the Democratic presidential nomination and has declared that he is steadfastly committed to continuing his family’s enduring legacy.

In a one-on-one interview with the Black Press of America, Kennedy spoke about his relentless focus on combating environmental racism, ending qualified immunity for law enforcement officers, and addressing the alarming racial disparities within the American medical system.

The 69-year-old District of Columbia-born candidate said he’s championing causes that have plagued marginalized communities for far too long.

His mission, he insisted, extends beyond rhetoric, seeking to dismantle systemic barriers and usher in a brighter, more equitable future, particularly for African Americans who have borne the brunt of injustice, including the problematic issue of maternal mortality.

As he steps onto the political stage where his uncle, John F. Kennedy, counts as one of the most popular presidents in American history and where his father had all but sewn up the Democrat nomination before his assassination in 1968, Kennedy’s audacious bid could challenge the status quo and spark a transformative movement that reverberates through the nation.

“Black Americans are going to be a principal priority for me, particularly in ending that fear of dangerous interaction with law enforcement,” Kennedy asserted.

He also pledged a move to end qualified immunity, which protects police officers from personal liability in the event of a lawsuit.

“There is no incentive for individuals to change bad behavior,” Kennedy remarked.

“We need systemic changes. We need to remove qualified immunity, which would make it necessary for an individual to consider his liability with every interaction. Every good eco-

nomic system [should] incentive good behavior and punish bad behavior. We need to have that.”

Kennedy added that there’s a need for a reorganization of police to understand the mission of protecting and serving “instead of being in combat mode when they come into the Black community.”

One of the children of the late Sen. Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968, Kennedy announced his presidential candidacy earlier this year. His father and uncle, John F. Kennedy, both demonstrated a desire for a united and strong America, which he said inspired him. Despite his anti-vaccine views that have caused controversy, some surveys have giving Kennedy as much as 20 percent support among Democrats. His unlikely challenge to the incumbent President Joe Biden has gained steam.

A poll by The Economist and YouGov showed that Kennedy was viewed favorably by 49 percent of respondents and unfavorably by just 30 percent, leaving him with a net rating of 19 points—higher than any other candidate in the poll, which surveyed 1,500 adult respondents from June 10 to 13.

Further, Biden had a negative 9-point net favorability rating, with 52 percent of respondents viewing him somewhat or very unfavorably.

In comparison, 45 percent have very or somewhat favorable impressions, and Trump had a negative 10-point net rating, with 53 percent viewing him unfavorably and 43 percent favorably.

“Could Bobby Kennedy catch a spark? Maybe,” Michael Novogratz, a billionaire Democratic donor who sup-

ported Biden in 2020 but has pledged not to back any candidate older than 72, told the New York Times.

“He’s alienated himself because of some of the anti-vax positions, but he is a bright man, articulate, eloquent, connected, has the Kennedy name, and would pull a lot of the Trump voters.”

Meanwhile, Kennedy said he’d also work to end medical racism “entrenched in our medical system in this country.”

He noted a recent video he created about medical racism, where health experts have concluded that Black Americans are less likely to receive quality medical care than Whites. During the pandemic, Kennedy noted that African Americans were dying at 3.6 times the rate of Whites.

Regardless of their income or social status, Black mothers suffered maternal mortality alarmingly higher than any other race.

“If you’re Black in this country, you’re getting third-world style medical care,” Kennedy insisted.

“The medical system is not attuned to taking care of Black patients. Being a Black patient in this country is almost as dangerous as being a Black prisoner. You won’t get good medical care, which will be one of my priorities.”

Kennedy also noted food deserts are plentiful and the quality of meals is “horrible” in most Black communities.

“Environmental issues plague Black America,” Kennedy stated. “Four out of every five toxic waste structures are in Black communities.

“The highest concentration of toxic waste is on the south side of Chicago and look at all the food deserts. And the food made available in many Black communities is highly processed and loaded with chemicals and hormones.

“It’s making African Americans sicker. We need children who have good health and healthy brains, and they need to be able to access the best medical care, but the system is predatory toward Black Americans.”

It was great to celebrate Juneteenth as the first National Black Holiday, other than Dr. King’s birthday. It was also great to have the rest of the country catch up with the celebration so many of us have honored and acknowledged for so many years. But there are some very important lessons to go with the acknowledgement of the Emancipation Declaration signed by President Lincoln.

First, the Emancipation Declaration was not to free all slaves, only those in the Confederate States at war with the Union. Second, when the document was signed by Lincoln on January 1, 1863, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was signed by President Lincoln on January 31, 1863, 30 days after the Emancipation Proclamation. We know this took two and a half years to reach the people of Galveston, Texas. The 13th Amendment was signed, as ratified by the states, on December 6, 1865. This document included all enslaved people in the United States while making per-

manent law the language of the Emancipation Proclamation. Now that we have been armed with the details, and we have had the celebrations commemorating these two great events, what do we, as individual beneficiaries of these great achievements, what do we do to safeguard these rights?  It is suggested that each of us find a way to get involved. We can do this by talking with our neighbors about the importance of all of us realizing that we are in this together. We can do this by registering to vote, not with a commitment to any party or individual, but to our own interest as we determine what that interest is on each issue before us. If it’s

homelessness and the unsheltered, then who can we help and how?

Simply think of what we would want if we were in their place. If it’s an opportunity to replace a right wing radical seeking to suppress our right to vote by removing boxes for ballot pickups, or advocating for voter identification cards for the elderly or banning books from public libraries, then we should be involved. If money was being given out for voter participation, we would find a way to get it.

How about using that same initiative to safeguard our collective rights and not just the things we care about collectively as individuals? Those persons whose shoulders we stand on, all were concerned about “us” as the Black collective. Can we afford to do any less over 150 years into the freedom so many made possible with such great sacrifices? We say “No”.  Get involved beyond the celebration of Juneteenth. That was yesterday. What will you do for today and tomorrow?

Why were military bases named after failed Confederates?

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—At first glance, the numbers don’t make sense. At one point there was approximately 700 Confederate monuments spread throughout 31 states and the District of Columbia. Yet, there were only 11 states which formed the Confederate States of America.

Historians have noted that most of the Confederate memorials were not built with the intention of honoring fallen soldiers, but to continue advancing the ideas behind White supremacy.

James Grossman, the executive director of the American Historical Association, says the increase in statues and monuments was clearly meant to send a message.

“These statues were meant to create legitimate garb for White supremacy,” Grossman said. “Why would you put a statue of Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson in 1948 in Baltimore?”

The Civil War was a culture war which ended in 1865 on the battlefield, but the war has never ended in the hearts and minds of those sympathetic to the Confederate cause.

In other words, the spirit behind the war still rages on. While slavery and Reconstruction, as distinct eras of our long and turbulent history ended over a century ago, the abolishment of slavery never ended racial hatred. Nor did the end of Reconstruction stop the unwillingness to grant people of color full rights as American citizens and as human beings.

Obama bum-rushed Tim Scott over racism, but what signal did that send?

During the 2000 Democratic primary, Illinois state senator Barack Obama challenged Congressman Bobby Rush. Rush was a former Black Panther who transitioned into a “racism-conscious” politician.

In the predominantly Black congressional district, Obama discovered an unwritten rule: If a Black candidate wasn’t “racism-conscious,” that candidate wasn’t qualified.

During the campaign, Obama portrayed himself as someone who could establish bridges with Whites in order to achieve legislative goals, whereas Rush was a politician from the past who believed more in protesting than passing legislation. Rush claimed that Obama went to Harvard and became an educated fool. Plus, Black people were not impressed by individuals with Eastern elite degrees.

Rush supporters criticized Obama for being “too white” and “too bright.”

Obama complained, “When Congressman Rush and his allies attack me for going to Harvard and teaching at the University of Chicago, they’re sending a signal to Black kids that if you’re well-educated, somehow, you’re not keeping it real.”

America, a Latino America, or an Asian America—there is only the United States of America.

During his 2008 presidential campaign, Obama told a Black church congregation that the civil rights generation had gotten Black America 90 percent of the way to attaining the American dream. That last ten percent of racism needed to be eliminated, but it wasn’t a preventive force like Jim Crow.

When the media accused Obama’s former pastor of making anti-American comments, Obama quickly distanced himself. Obama said that his former pastor expressed a profoundly distorted view of the country, a view that sees White racism as endemic and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America.

Then he famously said, “America is not a racist country.”

When Obama told the Black congregation during his presidential campaign that Black people are 90 percent of the way there, he implied the same thing as Scott. Except Obama was able to blame the Republican Party for the remaining 10 percent of racism.

Since Scott is a Black Republican, the unwritten rule is to accuse them of not being “racism-conscious” at all.

Recently, Obama played the role of Bobby Rush by telling the media that Republicans like Scott gloss over the effects of racism, and the only way Scott can be taken seriously is to address racial inequities. Obama reinforced comments made on The View by one of the hosts, who claimed Scott doesn’t realize he’s the exception to the rule. According to the “racism-conscious host,” the rule is that White supremacy is so embedded in the social fabric of America that its manifestations are institutional, systemic, and structural, making these forms of racism more pernicious than legalized segregation.

Commentary

The belief in White supremacy and the never-ending desire to defend it is not limited to the boundaries of former Confederate states.  Nor is it constrained by time. There are five major institutions in the United States: the family, education, government, economic and religion. The connection from our past history to our current events shows that each institution has found their unique way of preserving, defending, and advancing the Confederate cause of White supremacy. This would also include our U.S. Army.

Organizations such as the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy were influential in having roughly 1,500 symbols of Confederacy placed in public spaces.  These organizations totally ignored the act of treason when forces from the Confederate States of America attacked the United States military garrison at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, thereby starting the American Civil War.

Having major U.S. military installations in the South named after Confederate officers who supported the Fort Sumter attack is not only an insult to people of color, but to all true Americans. Nine southern Army bases were named after treasonous Confederate officers who fought against the Unites States Army to preserve slavery and White supremacy. The bases include: Fort Polk, Louisiana; Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia; Fort Lee, Virginia; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort Pickett, Virginia; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and Fort Benning, Georgia.

Rather than covering White supremacy in ways to make it appear legitimate, it should always be exposed in the manner it is presented along with highlighting its true intent.  Fort Benning was named after Henry Benning who, in a speech inviting Virginia to join the Confederacy, said Georgia had chosen to secede because “a separation from the North was the only thing that could prevent the abolition of slavery,” warning that if slavery was abolished, “then we will have Black governors, Black legislatures, Black juries, Black everything.”

His comments were met with laughter, but Benning’s fears were materialized. It is only fitting that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, as the first Black to hold the highest civilian position in the Department of Defense, ordered changing the name of Fort Benning following a U.S. Army commission recommendation. Needless to say, not everyone is happy and the renaming issue is now being exploited to score political points.

Former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as GOP presidential candidates, understand the message behind honoring failed Confederates. Both men condemned the renaming of Fort Bragg to Fort Liberty and have vowed to restore the name as president. While Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are well known Confederate generals, I never heard of Confederate General Braxton Bragg until now. The reason behind his obscurity and insignificance comes from the fact that he was simply not very good. He was known for his incompetence, quarreling with key subordinates and losing major battles. As one historian describes, Bragg “had done as much as any Confederate general to lose the war.” Bragg was known for his ruthless style so much that one of his own soldiers tried to kill him.

Fort Bragg is one of the largest military complexes in the world, and sadly it was named after a Confederate slave-owner who historians called the South’s worst and most hated general. His incompetence didn’t matter nor did his cruelty, lack of leadership and betrayal to his country. As long as he and other Confederate officers proved to be staunch defenders and heroes of White supremacy, they were deemed worthy to be recognized by statues, monuments, schools, roads and even military installations. The culture war continues. Despite the name change to Fort Liberty, people vow to keep calling it Fort Bragg. We should be prepared that people will continue to passionately embrace the Confederate cause while rewarding those in positions of power despite their cruelty, incompetence and national betrayal.

Obama was crushed in the election.

Then, in 2004, Obama became a national figure with a speech at the Democratic National Convention. He told the crowd that his parents believed in America. They gave him an African name because, in America, one’s ethnicity will not be a barrier to success. Even though his parents were not rich, they saw him attend the top schools. In a generous America, one did not need to be rich to reach their full potential.

Obama emphasized that his story would not be possible in any other country.

He famously stated that there is no such thing as a Black America, a White

Obama carefully crafted himself as a politician who was not “racism-conscious,” and it won him the presidency.

In 2023, Black Republican Senator Tim Scott declared his candidacy for president. Scott gained national attention after delivering the Republican rebuttal to President Biden’s first speech to a joint session of Congress.

Scott, like Obama, stated that his family was not wealthy, but he was able to take advantage of a series of possibilities that are uniquely available in America. Scott acknowledged the discrimination he experienced throughout his life, but he believes it is wrong to point to our painful past and pretend that no progress has been made.

Scott responded to The View hosts in the same way that Obama responded to Bobby Rush’s supporters. He said that is a dangerous, offensive, and disgusting message to communicate to our youth: that the only way to achieve success is to be the exception.

Obama believed Bobby Rush’s supporters were sending the wrong message to young people by labeling him “too white” and “too bright,” but Obama’s current message is that if a Black candidate isn’t racism-conscious,” they can’t be taken seriously. Obama’s message is just as bad as the one he complained about in the past; unfortunately, Obama’s too busy keeping it real to realize that.

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—Texas is suffering from record high temperatures, with heat indexes topping a staggering 120 degrees.

40 million people are at risk from what scientists call a “heat dome,” and storm chasers call a “death ridge.” Texas already is the state that suffers the highest number of deaths from heat exposure,

And the National Weather Service warns that the “extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.” Officials warn Texans to stay cool and hydrated.

In response, the Republican Texas State legislature and Republican Governor Greg Abbott passed and signed into law a bill that voids any city law that requires water breaks for employees.

You read that right. At the midst of a deadly heat wave, Republican officials passed a law to revoke city laws—such as one passed in Austin in 2010 and Dallas in 2015—that require water breaks for workers. The law takes effect in September, but next summer, this will end up killing people. “Construction is a deadly industry. Whatever the minimum protection is, it can save a life. We are talking about a human right,” said Ana Gonzalez, deputy director of policy and politics at the Texas AFL-CIO. “We will see more deaths, especially in Texas’ high temperatures.”

The threadbare excuse for the law is that companies don’t want to deal with a confusing patchwork of local regulations. Of course, the governor could have

Commentary

removed that irritation by supporting a state law to mandate sensible water breaks rather than one banning them.

In reality, this legislation essentially treats workers as property—without human rights, even the right to life—to be used as their employers deem fit. The extreme expression of this, of course, was slavery, in which slaves literally were valued and sold as property. The 13th Amendment, passed after the Civil War, outlawed slavery—but it did not enshrine basic human rights or economic rights.

The majority of construction workers in Texas are Latinos, many undocumented, and relatively easy for employers to abuse and legislatures to oppress, as Blacks were under slavery. Linking a fake populism with appeals on conservative social issues like abortion, Republicans have been gaining ground among Latino voters—but apparently not enough to begin to respect their basic human right to survival.

In any case, this is less about race than about workers of all races. Under Donald Trump, Republicans have offered workers heated rhetoric about nativism, about crime, even about mythical Democratic pedophiles, using populist rhetoric as a

cover for relentlessly anti-worker policies. Republican legislatures in Iowa and Ohio have weakened child labor laws, allowing children as young as 14 to be employed on evening shifts using caustic chemicals in meat coolers and industrial cleaners. Republican justices have rolled back the right to organize, and disemboweled the powers of existing unions. Republicans oppose raising the minimum wage, enforcing workplace safety, and seek to weaken unemployment support for those who are laid off.

Passing a law to ban local protection of water breaks in the midst of a record and deadly heat wave speaks for itself. It reminds me of the famous moment in the McCarthy hearings at the height of the ’50s Red Scare. Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy, after feeding the Red Scare with repeated screeds about communists subverting the government, convened hearings on whether the US Army was soft on communism. Frustrated by the Army’s defense attorney, Joseph N. Welch, McCarthy slurred a young associate in Welch’s firm as linked to communists. Flabbergasted, Welch responded: “Until this moment, senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?” That moment marked the effective end of McCarthy’s reign of terror.

Now in the wake of the cruel law passed by the Republican legislature and signed by its governor, surely it is time to ask each of them, “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?”

What, to the White man, is June 19th?

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—It was in the Dred Scott Decision issued on March 6, 1857, that Chief Justice Roger Taney of the U. S. Supreme Court solidified the viciously racist lens through which many White Americans historically viewed Black people: He said, “[Black people] had for more than a century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the White race, either in social or political relations; and so far inferior, that they had no rights which the White man was bound to respect; and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit. He was bought and sold and treated as an ordinary article of merchandise and traffic, whenever a profit could be made by it.”

Because enslaved people were viewed as nothing more than merchandise, they were not only tortured by whippings, lynching, castrations, and burnings alive, but these cruelties were often documented in photographs with White men, women and children standing smugly and smiling beside their maimed bodies.

The perpetrators even joyously shared their depravities by making the pictures into postcards that they mailed to friends and associates around the country, as displayed in the book,

“Without Sanctuary.”

Centuries later, as leaders of states such as Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida attempt to hide the evils perpetrated against Black people during and since enslavement, upon Juneteenth, 2023, the clearest evidence of the evils of racism and White supremacy is what they themselves and historians documented in Supreme Court decisions, on post cards in photographs on signs such “Negroes for Sale” and in history books.

These are the reasons that the national Juneteenth celebration of freedom is so very bittersweet. Although America has experienced its first Black president, its first Black vice president, its first Black attorney general and Blacks on the U. S. Supreme Court, the nation has yet to fully recognize the evils of slavery and the affects the shameful institution still has on the people of this nation—Black and White.

And so, just as Frederick Douglass asked the famous question in 1852, “What to the slave is your Fourth of July?”, the question must now be asked and answered, “What to the White man is June 19th? Of course, not all White people are to blame for the evils of enslavement. And yet, those who remain silent as others such as DeSantis continue their assault on truth, are just as guilty as those who avert their eyes as the spirit of those evils and the deeds perpetrated by those evils

remain rampant.

So, in as much as Juneteenth—in a nutshell—celebrates the victory of freedom won largely by Black Union soldiers over Confederates who fought to maintain slavery, the question must continuously be asked, What now to the White man is June 19th?  The following are a few answers to be considered.

It is an opportunity for those who have consciously or unconsciously averted their eyes, to wake up and join the celebration of freedom; It is an opportunity for them to teach their children the truth about enslavement of Black people and about the fight for freedom. It is a day for racists and White supremacists to repent of their ways and to forever join an army for justice. And, as stated by President Joseph Biden, who declared the day a federal holiday, it is a season to “breathe new life into the very essence of America—to make sure all Americans feel the power of this day and the progress we can make as a country; to choose love over hate, unity over disunion, and progress over retreat. Choosing to remember history, not erase it; to read books, not ban them - no matter how hard some people try.”
