The thirst for good music, romance and a bit of history will be quenched when audiences attend the performance of Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company’s season-opening production of "Dinah: A Musical Revue."

“People’s souls are starving for something of substance that they can relate to that won’t kill them," explained the production's creator, Ernest McCarty. "This piece means a lot to the people who come to see it, to hear those old sounds and feel the old feelings because the radio isn’t playing Dinah Washington anymore. Where can they go to worship at the throne of Dinah Washington?

'Dinah: A Musical Revue' takes people back to that old feeling and those old sounds that they can’t get now.”

The show will run through April 28 at Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre’s 3401 Milwaukee Street home in the Hill District. It's the second time Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company has produced the show. The first time was in 2015.

“I produced this in 2015 right before my accident. This time there is a different cast (except for Delana Flowers, who is reprising the role as Dinah Washington). We have a live band with top musicians in the city—Roger Humphries, Dewayne Dolphin, Dewayne Fulton

O.J. Simpson, iconic

athlete and central figure in American legal history, dies at 76

O.J. Simpson, a towering figure in both the sports world and the annals of American legal history, lost his battle with cancer at the age of 76. His family confirmed his death in a statement issued early on Thursday, April 11.

“On April 10, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer,” read the statement shared by Simpson’s family. “He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.”

Simpson’s life story, a blend of unparalleled athletic achievement and enduring controversy, began in San Francisco, California, on July 9, 1947. His rise to prominence began at the University of Southern California (USC), where his prowess

as a college football star catapulted him into the national spotlight. His remarkable talent on the field, including a legendary game-winning touchdown against rival UCLA, solidified his status as one of the most electrifying athletes of his era.

Simpson’s professional career initially experienced difficulties after the Buffalo Bills selected him with the first overall pick in the 1969 NFL draft. However, under the guidance of coach Lou Saban, he flourished, achieving feats that would etch his name in football history. Notably, Simpson’s record-breaking 1973 season, during which he became the first player to rush for 2,000 yards in a single NFL campaign, remains an indelible mark of his athletic prowess. Off the field, Simpson’s magnetic personality and

commercial appeal transcended sports, propelling him to become a cultural icon. His groundbreaking endorsement deals, such as the memorable Hertz rental car campaign, revolutionized celebrity advertising and broadened his appeal to a diverse audience.

However, Simpson’s legacy became irrevocably entangled with controversy following the brutal murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in 1994. The ensuing “Trial of the Century,” characterized by its intense media scrutiny and stark racial divisions, captivated the nation. On October 3, 1995, Simpson was acquitted of the murder charges.

Despite winning the criminal case, Simpson’s life continued to be filled with upheaval, includ-

1872— Activist and fiery journalist William Monroe Trotter is born on this day in Boston, Mass. A close friend of W.E.B. Du Bois, Trotter was one of the most militant Black leaders of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He helped found the Niagara Movement, which led to the establishment of the NAACP but then refused to join, claiming the group was too moderate and elitist. He was also a leading opponent of the accommodating policies of Booker T. Washington. Trotter’s primary vehicle of expression was his newspaper—the Boston Guardian.

1818— Military leader Andrew Jackson (later president) leads the defeat of a force of Indians and Blacks at the Battle of Suwanee, bringing an end to the First Seminole War. The Seminoles had been the target of a government military campaign because they possessed lands, which Whites in Florida greatly desired, and because they had provided safe haven for escaped slaves. Indeed, Blacks such as John Horse would become major Seminole leaders. It would take at least two more major military campaigns before the Seminoles and their Black allies lost possession of those lands.

1977—Alex Haley , author of “Roots,” is awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

1910—The National Urban League is formed in New York City. It was born out of a merger of the National League for the Protection of Colored Women, National League on Urban Conditions among Negroes and remnants of the Niagara Movement which had earlier help found the NAACP. Among the leading organizers were Ruth Standish Baldwin and George Edmund Haynes. The organization was founded in part to be more focused on economic issues affecting Blacks than the NAACP. Today, it is generally considered the nation’s second most powerful civil rights organization after the NAACP.

1898— An official state of war is said to exist between Spain and the U.S. over Cuba. This Spanish American War was fought with major representation of Black soldiers from Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, Illinois and Kansas. For imperialistic reasons of its own, the U.S. aided Cuban independence from Spain. Cuba became independent in 1902. However, when the Black troops returned to America, their greetings ranged from parades and speeches in some cities to assaults and lynching in other cities.

2003— African-American song stylist Nina Simone , born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, dies in Paris. She was was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and civil rights activist. Over the length of her career Simone recorded more than 40 albums, mostly between 1958, when she made her debut with “Little Girl Blue,” and 1974. She was 70 years old.

ing his subsequent civil liability for the murders and his 2008 conviction on robbery and kidnapping charges.

In the following years, Simpson’s story remained a subject of fascination, inspiring numerous television adaptations and documentaries that sought to unravel the complexities of his life and legacy.

1971—Walter Fauntroy becomes the first elected Congressional representative from the predominantly Black District of Columbia since Reconstruction. However, Fauntroy did not have voting rights. Indeed, down to this day, the Congressional Representative from Washington, D.C., is still not allowed to vote on major legislation. This bar was once common among capitol cities. But today, America stands virtually alone among major nations in barring the residents of its capitol city from having a voting representative in its national legislature. Critics argue that the bar continues because the city is majority African-American.

1978—Max Robinson becomes the first African American anchor of a major network television news program when he begins co-anchoring ABC nightly news from Chicago. The Richmond, Va., native died of AIDS in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 20, 1988.

1871— The Third Enforcement Act is enacted. The Act was designed to give the president greater powers to suppress the actions of terrorist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan, as they attempted to stop Blacks from voting. In some instances, the racist groups used armed force to drive out integrated governments in several Southern cities. Under the Act, the president could declare such activities “rebellion against the government” and employ federal troops to restore order.

1899— Jazz great Edward “Duke” Ellington is born in Washington, D.C. Ellington was perhaps the greatest of the Jazz pioneers, popularizing Jazz with his performances, composing and his role as a bandleader. Ellington died in 1974.

1909— Jazz great Lionel Hampton is born in Louisville, Ky. Hampton was another of the great band leaders of the Jazz era. He was also known for his skills on the vibraphone. He died in 2002.

1692— The notorious “Salem Witch Trials” of Salem, Mass., claim their first Black victim. Mary Black, a slave, is accused of sorcery and jailed. The hysteria created by the trials would lead to the arrests of 141 people (mostly women) and result in 19 of them being put to death. Ironically, there is reason to believe that the witch trials were indirectly set in motion by the voodoo stories of a Black slave. It seems that a minister brought to Salem a slave from Barbados named Tituba. He fascinated the minister’s daughters with stories about witchcraft in Africa and the Caribbean. The two daughters shared the stories with other young girls in the area and soon imagination took the place of reality. The girls started acting strangely and claimed they were victims of witchcraft. Superstitious adults began pressuring them to name names and soon dozens of women were being jailed for practicing witchcraft. The trials, which were not limited to Massachusetts, but spread throughout New England, are perhaps one of the greatest testimonies to how minds can be twisted to believe in the ridiculous and hurt others of as result of false belief.

1922— Jazz great Charles Mingus is born. The virtuoso bass player was born on a military base in Nogales, Ariz.

1856— One of the greatest inventors in American history, Granville T. Woods , is born in Columbus, Ohio. During his life he received 65 patents for electrical, mechanical and communications devices. Among his inventions was an advanced telephone transmitter. The transmitter was so advanced that the Alexander Graham Bell Company purchased the rights to it from Woods, both because it was superior to what Bell had invented and for fear that Woods might become a major rival to the Bell Company. At his height, the Cincinnati, Ohio Catholic Tribune (Jan. 14, 1886) wrote of Woods: “…the greatest colored inventor in the history of the race and equal, if not superior, to any inventor in the country…”

1872—Charlotte E. Ray becomes the first Black female lawyer in American history. Born in New York City to a journalist father and a politically active mother, Ray was a brilliant student who was teaching at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by the time she was 19. By age 22 she had her law degree and was admitted to the D.C. bar. However, sexual and racial discrimination forced her to abandon her law practice and return to New York to teach. She died Jan. 4, 1911. 1971— Liberian President William

Tubman dies. Tubman and his strong-man rule had kept the West African nation founded by freed American slaves relatively stable but not necessarily democratic. His death laid the foundation for the anarchy and civil wars which would grip the nation for the next 30 years. Tubman also headed a class of so-called Americo-Liberians who often discriminated against the native African population. trict state representative, which was led by a Black woman, Summer Lee, prior to Salisbury. Lee is now in the U.S. Congress, representing Pa.’s 12th District.

On March 19, Comans was collectively endorsed by progressive leaders Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, Congresswoman Lee, and Allegheny County Chief Executive Sara Innamorato.

"As a Wilkinsburg School Board member, Ashley Comans lowered property taxes and expanded enrollment and programming. Our families, communities, and futures depend on our children’s education. But right now, too many Black, brown, and low-income neighborhoods are denied resources and the safe environment and educational opportunities kids need to thrive," Mayor Gainey said in a statement announcing the endorsement. "We need Ashley in Harrisburg to work with the city, school districts, teachers’ unions, and parents to rewrite the rules so every neighborhood public school is a place where all children can learn, grow, and thrive.”

"When Ashley Comans won her race for school board in 2017, she asked her friends to get to work with her. I was one of those friends," Congresswoman Lee said in a statement. "Ashley’s energy and commitment to changing this region set

the groundwork for me to become the first Black woman from Western Pa. to represent this region in Harrisburg and now in Washington, D.C. People like Ashley inspire all of us and remind us of what is possible when working families come together to elect transformational leaders. I’m proud to endorse her candidacy for my former seat. The district would be lucky to have her.”

“Earning their endorsement is further confirmation of the coalition that we have been building over the past several years, and having people who are in leadership that are aligned with the vision that we have for fighting for and advocating for the communities that we represent," Comans told the Courier. "We have been building and empowering our communities to realize the power in their vote, and the power in having representatives that are reflective of the communities that we represent. I don't take their support lightly.” Comans believes this is just the beginning and looks forward to building the Black representation of leadership in Pittsburgh.

Throughout Comans’ campaign, she has achieved several milestones including receiving labor union endorsements such as ATU Local 85 and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 57. She has also had sev-

eral campaign volunteers willing to share her message to the community.

“We have been able to raise over $150,000 to really power this campaign and making sure that we are reaching as many voters as we possibly can," Comans told the Courier. District 34 residents across areas like Wilkinsburg, Rankin, Swissvale, Braddock, Braddock Hills, North Braddock and East Pittsburgh have experienced various systemic challenges such as pollution, lack of public school funding, and poverty. As a Wilkinsburg native who empathizes with these issues, Comans said she's determined to prioritize addressing them in Harrisburg if elected.

“These are folks that I have been in community with all my life and can share the needs of why this is so important," Comans said.

Comans believes that the voices and stories of community members should spearhead advocacy efforts for policy changes at the state level, drawing on her experience as a Wilkinsburg School Board Director to advocate for equitable education funding. Comans has also drawn inspiration from the youth, whose passion and energy fuel her commitment to implementing positive change. “When they see someone that inspires them or encourages them to recognize what we are capable of being and doing, the motivation that gives me is just unmatched,” Comans said.

As a mother herself, Comans takes pride in instilling a sense of empowerment in her 4-yearold daughter to express herself and advocate for her beliefs. “As much as she's only 4 years old, she gets it. She understands that we are fighting for a better future for her," Comans said.

As a passionate community advocate who grew up in Pa. House District 34, Comans said she's a voice for those who are often overlooked. She wants to fight for fairly funded public schools, paid family and medical leave, and increase the commonwealth’s minimum wage rate, amongst others. She recognizes that real change only occurs through action, and she said she's committed to leading by example to build a stronger, more equitable House District 34.

and Tony Campbell,” said Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, Mark Clayton Southers. “Ernest, who wrote the play, was in the production last time and he directed it, but this time I’m directing it. There are 10 new songs. We have swapped songs and this time the show is being performed in our permanent home. It will have a nightclub feel. It takes place in Birdland in New York in the 1960s, so the theater is going to be transformed into a nightclub. It will be a nice night on the town for folks. We’ve been getting good comments from the audience. It’s a really nice atmosphere.” Flowers told the New Pittsburgh Courier she's excited to reprise her role as Dinah Washington. “When I played Dinah back then, I didn’t have as much relatable experience,” said Flowers, who hails from Lancaster, but has lived in Pittsburgh 18 years and has been acting consistently

since she set foot in the Golden Triangle. “Now I can relate more to her. Now I understand trying to fill an internal void. The research I’ve done and having more life experience is going into this performance. I want the audience to recognize that we are all human beings. We see people perform and we think they are wonderful, but they have problems, and they can’t have human experiences in the public eyes. There was a lot of segregation back then and the Black artists had to do a lot to survive. Every time I perform it’s special, I get to share the stage with living legends, and I feel so honored to share the stage with them. I am grateful that they were willing to trust me with this role again. This story is important to our culture, history, and I am grateful for this opportunity.”

In addition to Flowers reprising her role as the main character, other cast members include former KDKA-TV reporter Royce Jones, Cheryl El-Walker, Katy Cotten,

“I’m playing reporter Bob Hunter who does an expose on Dinah Washington," said Jones, who is making his professional acting debut with the role. "He has one night with her as she prepares for her Birdland performance. He becomes a fly on the wall, and he sees everything. This is the path I wanted to go down before journalism. I believe I was born to entertain. I was ready to jump into this when Mark reached out to me...If you love Dinah Washington and she’s a part of your life, musically you are going to love it. If you are just entering Dinah Washington’s world for the first time, then you are going to have an educational experience. We have to keep our ancestors' stories alive and our ancestors' names live for the next generation."

“Dinah Washington was about music and singing and songs. I constructed the play around music to put in a little history and I created dialogue that she may have said to fit with the music,” said

McCarty, who wrote the play in 2009. "She was a performer and businesswoman in a man’s world who booked herself. She owned herself. She said she was going to book her own self and pay herself 10 percent. She also booked other acts as well at a time when that was uncommon for women. The songstress battled weight, lowself-esteem, and other demons and tragically died of a drug overdose at the age of 39."

Within the last couple of years, America has seen some alarming choices regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Affirmative action and now, DEI bills have been removed from universities, causing a serious uproar amongst what we know in modern times to be lawful and socially acceptable.

As for DEI, which stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion, these programs and policies have been in place to protect women and minorities from discrimination, preferential treatment, and implicit bias in education and the workplace. Such programs allow representation and involvement for people of various ethnic backgrounds. Much like affirmative action, DEI programs have allowed minorities to participate and succeed in education, careers, and initiatives.

The Rise of Anti-DEI Laws

Recently, many states have banned DEI programs inside public colleges and universities. Republicans have taken issue with the programming and have said DEI is ineffective, discriminatory, and a waste of funding. Some have even taken the notion that DEI programs cause more division and discrimination in society. Most notably, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law in May 2023 that banned the state’s public colleges and universities from spending money on DEI programs.

According to a May 2023 article from NPR, DeSantis stated, “If you look at the way this has actually been implemented across the country, DEI is better viewed as standing for discrimination, exclusion, and indoctrination. And that has no place in our public institutions.” These remarks were made during a news conference at the New College of Florida in Sarasota.

To date, many institutions across the U.S. have DEI offices and initiatives that serve the purpose of promoting diversity and inclusion amongst faculty, staff, and students. On March 20, Alabama became the latest state to sign an anti-DEI ban into law. Signed by Alabama Governor Kate Ivy, the law has been described as preventing programs or instruction that promote divisive concepts. Unsurprisingly, the new law hasn’t been received well by everyone. Leading up to the signing, Birmingham, Alabama, Mayor Randall Woodfin posted a message expressing his views on the proposed law at the time.

“I have no problem organizing Black parents and athletes to attend other institutions outside of the state where diversity and inclusion are prioritized,” he stated. Contrary to some beliefs, DEI funding is beneficial to many students as it provides scholarship funding, employment opportunities after college, social support, and an overall sense of safety and representation in this divisive climate. Mental health resources are also valuable to minority students as they are offered a safe space to discuss issues they may face that are unique to their experience.

While Alabama has been the latest state to join the movement to end DEI efforts, to A W-4 form, or “Employee’s Withholding Certificate,” is an IRS tax document that employees fill out and submit to their employers. Employers use the information on a W-4 to calculate how much tax to withhold from an employee’s paycheck. When you complete Form W-4, you’re instructing the employer on how much taxes to withhold from each paycheck. The W-4 Form takes into account various things including: filing status, multiple jobs adjustments, amount of credits, amount of other income, amount of deductions, and any additional amount to withhold from each paycheck. Completion of this form helps to compute the amount of federal income tax to deduct and withhold from your paycheck.

Employees are required to fill out W-4 forms because the IRS requires people to pay taxes on their income throughout the year, as they earn it. If you have too little tax withheld, you could owe a surprisingly large sum to the IRS in April, plus interest and penalties for underpaying during the year.

In 2020, the W-4 form changed to make the form easier to complete and to help individuals withhold federal income taxes more accurately from their paychecks. As with most things being

In news that may be surprising to many, unprecedented national research released recently suggests that most Americans are willing to pay a premium price for products and services if they know that they are helping to reduce the racial wealth gap in the U.S.

The study was cited by Fund for Social Equity, a new nonprofit that works to change the reality of the ongoing racial wealth gap through research-first, marketing-based solutions.

That gap between Black and White households continues to widen in the U.S. and now stands at $44,890 and $285,010, respectively, according to the latest research from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve.

Fund for Social Equity has tested a seal to identify businesses owned and operated by Blacks as a way to reduce the wealth disparity between Black and White Americans.

It’s an easy conversation talking to people when they get a tax refund. Especially when they receive more than they anticipated. This group of people thinks you’re the best tax professional in the world. It’s a gruesome conversation talking to people who owe taxes. They begin to second-guess you and think you did something wrong. You have to take the time to explain how much they owe, why they owe, payment options, and how to avoid owing taxes next tax season. it’s not prudent to lend the IRS money throughout the year only to receive it in the form of a tax refund with zero interest earned. I simply allow them to enjoy their lump sum of cash. When I’m doing financial coaching and I’m working with people who are living paycheck to paycheck because the money is tight, the first question I ask is, did you receive a tax refund last year? I go on to explain to them that they need to create some wiggle room in their budget. One easy way to do that is to modify their W-4 form and recognize that tax refund as extra money in every paycheck. Your W-4 Form isn’t a “complete it when you start a new job then forget about it every year thereafter.” This document is fluid. As your marital status, filing status, dependents, income, income sources, charitable contributions, etc., changes, so should it. You should consider reviewing your W-4 Form at work yearly to ensure no surprises next tax season. The IRS actually does a great job detailing how to complete this form on the W-4 Form itself. In this article, I’m going to provide step-by-step instructions on completing the W-4 Form. Completing the IRS Form W-4 accurately ensures that the right amount of federal income tax is withheld from your paycheck. Backlash against diversity: The growing trend
“The
- Mark Winston Griffith

While opposition to DEI —diversity, equity and inclusion—has a long history, it has picked up steam recently.

In 2023, when Silicon Valley Bank collapsed, detractors claimed that the bank’s focus on DEI was responsible—rather than the bank overinvesting in bonds that suddenly lost much of their value.

Not long afterward, when a wall panel detached from an Alaska Airlines flight at 16,000 feet, opponents claimed without evidence that DEI’s corrosive effects were to blame.

More recently, when a cargo ship lost power and slammed into Baltimore’s Key Bridge, critics suggested that DEI was somehow at fault.

In the face of these attacks, many company leaders are troublingly silent about their commitment to DEI. I believe this is a mistake. It allows misrepresentations to take root, and it reinforces the exclusion and marginalization many workers of color already experience.

As a sociologist who focuses on race, gender and work, I believe this is a pivotal moment for companies to reinforce their commitment to DEI.

A history of DEI

For starters, it’s useful to take stock of how American companies moved to DEI in the first place, and how diversity practices are typically structured.

For the overwhelming majority of U.S. history, workers who weren’t White men weren’t just legally banned from leadership roles; they could be barred from holding any role in an organization.

The formal exclusion of

women of all races and men of color didn’t become illegal until the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That means that for nearly 200 years after the country’s founding, White men had virtually unrestricted and exclusive access to the levels of power in all organizations.

The objective, meritocratic past that DEI critics imagine is thus a myth. The centuries-long, systematic exclusion of White women and people of color gives lie to the idea that jobs have historically gone only to the most qualified.

After the Civil Rights Act, companies moved to address the new reality that the racial and gender discrimination that had been practiced with impunity for generations was now illegal. Affirmative action policies were one way organizations sought to address past and ongoing discrimination, and many companies, at least for a time, sought to close racial and gender disparities.

But by the 1980s, backlash to these goals was ascendant. Legal decisions such as the Supreme Court’s 1978 Bakke ruling allowed organizations to consider race as one of many factors when they evaluated applicants but specifically outlawed the use of quotas. Companies could thus consider race as part of a package but, contrary to popular opinion, could not hire candidates simply because they were Black (or from another marginalized group).

They could, however, consider diversity as a compelling interest that justified using race as one of a variety of factors in making decisions about hiring. A company that had no Black workers on its entire staff could thus seek to diversify, taking race into account alongside experience, qualifications, education and

other criteria when considering a candidate. What this hypothetical company could not do is simply hire a Black worker based exclusively on their race.

Diversity initiatives today

In the wake of ongoing backlash, most companies today have moved even further from trying to alleviate ongoing racial and gender disparities. Instead, they embrace the form of DEI that’s under harsh criticism today. But today’s DEI doesn’t necessarily entail a focus on hiring or promoting more Black workers. It doesn’t even always focus on race. Instead, many DEI managers have sought to focus their efforts more broadly on diversity of thought, region or opinion as a way to avoid the kind of pushback they’re encountering today.

Additionally, companies often rely heavily on DEI practices such as mandatory diversity training or brief workshops with external consultants that actually depress the numbers of Black workers—and other workers of color—in leadership roles.

Today’s critics cast DEI as unfairly advantaging unqualified Black workers, but the reality is that companies stopped focusing on closing racial disparities long ago.

The numbers bear this out. While White men constitute only 30 percent of the U.S. population, as of 2017 they made up 80 percent of members of Congress, 85 percent of corporate executive officers, 95 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs and 97 percent of heads of venture capital firms.

The business case for diversity Clearly, DEI is not reshaping America’s most powerful institutions in a way that places significant numbers of Black workers

in leadership roles.

Instead, researchers know that obstacles such as hiring discrimination, wage inequality, hostile organizational cultures and blocked routes to advancement still persist for highly qualified, skilled and motivated Black workers.

The irony is that the data shows very clearly that diversity is correlated with clear benefits to organizations. Companies with more racial and gender diversity among managers boast more profitability and more innovation than those without. They have advantages in recruitment, employee satisfaction and responding to market changes and consumer needs.

Organizations that are genuinely committed to DEI aren’t losing sight of the big picture; rather, they’re investing in their long-term financial success.

For purely self-interested reasons, then, companies should be offering a full-throated defense of DEI. Instead, they’ve been in retreat.

For example, law firms are walking back programs designed to attract lawyers of color, even though the legal profession is overwhelmingly made up of White workers. Similarly, efforts to increase venture capital funding to Black women are under attack, even though in 2018 less than 1 percent of a total of $130 billion raised went to firms headed by women of color. And major tech companies are shifting resources away from post-2020 investments in DEI, even though Black workers remain significantly underrepresented in that industry as well.

DEI practices that work

It doesn’t have to be this way. Companies can still rely on evidence-based DEI practices that show results. One approach in-

volves establishing mentoring programs that are open to everyone. Another is cross-training workers so they can build their skills in various parts of a company while at the same time broadening their networks. And a third tack includes investing in flexible, family-friendly workplace policies that send a message to workers that they and their needs matter.

None of these programs are reserved for members of any particular racial group, so they’re within the bounds of the law. The beauty of this approach is that even though these initiatives are race-neutral, research indicates they benefit workers of color more than mandating annual diversity training.

In addition to using measures like these that work, I believe it’s important for corporate leaders to stand up for DEI precisely because it’s under threat.

Some are doing this already. Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase recently described himself as a “full-throated, red-blooded, patriotic, unwoke, capitalist CEO” who still plans to maintain the bank’s commitment to DEI, particularly when it comes to the approaches that are shown to net results. The celebrity businessman Mark Cuban has been similarly outspoken in support of DEI, unequivocally describing it as “good for business.” Given that research shows workforce diversity helps companies boost profits, it’s surprising to me that more leaders don’t take this approach. The alternative is letting a false narrative that imperils their growth go unchallenged.

date, over 30 states have passed or at least introduced anti-DEI laws. Nine states have officially passed anti-DEI laws, including Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Indiana, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

In addition to the Black community, DEI laws and initiatives have protected other minority groups, including women, other people of color, LGBTQ+, and disabled communities.

Also, while affirmative action served minority groups in their admission processes to enter colleges and universities, DEI laws have ensured that they maintained a happier, more successful, and safer enrollment while also providing resources past their college experience.

Why DEI Is Necessary

There are many facets to DEI initiatives. For education, it is particularly important to not only advocate for diversity in hiring and programming but also to make progress in the areas of the curriculums that are being taught in these institutions. There are examples such as teaching a diverse amount of history about various ethnic groups, especially outside of their respective history or heritage months. DEI initiatives extend to the recruitment and retention of an actively diverse student enrollment that speaks to the needs of its environment while also representing how society should prioritize inclusion in the 21st century. Minority population growth in the U.S. is on the incline and is expected to continue.

In January, the Pew Research Center reported that an estimated 47.9 million people self-identified as Black in 2022, making up 14.4 percent of the country’s population. This marks a 32 percent increase since 2000, when there were 36.2 million Black people living in the U.S. Large swaths of Black Americans reside in the South, with Texas boasting a Black population of about 4.2 million. Florida has about 3.9 million Black residents, and Georgia has about 3.7 million, which is third.

Also, Utah experienced its fastest growth in the Black population, with an increase of 86 percent between 2010 and 2022. States, such as Utah, have experienced a surge in Black population growth and traditionally haven’t had many Black citizens.

So, it is particularly telling that anti-DEI laws are being passed in Utah, Texas, and Florida, where this growth is happening.

Also, educational attainment in the Black community is on the rise, with 26 percent of Black adults, or 7 million people, having earned at least a bachelor’s degree in 2022. This figure was up from 14.5 percent in 2000. As Black citizens earn more degrees, DEI has become a useful tool in helping them navigate their educational goals.

BUSINESS B2 APRIL 17-23, 2024 NEW PITTSBURGH COURIER ANTI-DEI LAWS FROM B1 The backlash against Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in business is in full force— but myths obscure the real value of DEI Understanding how to complete Form W-4 holding requires attention. Simple Adjustment: If both jobs have similar pay, check the box in Step 2(c). This option works best for dual-earner households. Detailed Adjustment: Alternatively, use the IRS’s Tax Withholding Estimator online or complete the Multiple Jobs Worksheet provided with the form for more accurate results. Step 3: Claim Dependents Dependent Credits: If you have dependents, calculate if you qualify for Child Tax Credit and credit for other dependents. This step helps reduce the tax withheld based on eligible dependents. Step 4: Other Adjustments Other Income: If you expect to earn additional income not subject to withholding (e.g., interest, dividends), enter this in Step 4(a). Deductions: If you plan to itemize deductions instead of claiming the standard deduction, estimate these and enter the amount in Step 4(b). This section helps adjust withholding to match your tax liability more closely. Extra Withholding: To further tailor your withholdings, specify any additional tax you want withheld from each paycheck in Step 4(c). This might be useful if you have other income that increases your tax bill. Step 5: Sign and Submit Finalize the Form: Sign and date the form. Without your signature, the W-4 will not be valid. Return the completed form to your employer’s payroll or HR department, which will adjust your withholdings accordingly. Additional Tips Annual Review: Re-evaluate your W-4 annually or after significant life changes (e.g., marriage, childbirth, or a change in income). Privacy Concerns: If you prefer not to disclose multiple jobs to your employer, using the IRS Tax Estimator and adjusting your withholdings privately or through additional tax payments might be a better option. Keep Informed: Tax laws can change, so stay updated on any modifications that might affect your tax situation. By carefully completing the W-4 form, you can ensure that your tax withholdings match your actual tax liability, preventing surprises at tax time and helping you manage your finances better throughout the year. The Courier’s Primary Election Endorsements

There are sure things in life—death, taxes, and politics. We’ve come around to yet another political season in Pennsylvania, with the April 23 Primary Election only days away. And with politics comes the truth, the lies and the gray areas.

The New Pittsburgh Courier is well aware of the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent by conservative groups in their bid to remove Congresswoman Summer Lee from office in Pa.’s District 12. If you don’t know who Jeffrey Yass is, well, you’re probably not alone. He’s a billionaire who, according to PublicSource, “has long championed conservative causes and candidates in Pennsylvania.” PublicSource reported this month that he gave $800,000 to a political action committee that is airing TV ads in support of Congresswoman Lee’s challenger, Bhavini Patel. Patel, 30, is an Edgewood Borough Council member who has hammered Congresswoman Lee for her stances on the Israel-Hamas war and believes the Congresswoman has moved the Democratic Party too far to the left.

The attacks on Congresswoman Lee are commonplace. Two years ago, more than $3 million was spent by outside groups in their attempts to keep Lee from becoming the first Black Congresswoman from Pennsylvania.

It didn’t work, as Congresswoman Lee defeated challenger Steve Irwin in the Primary, which basically secured the victory in November 2022.

Now, Patel is the latest person to challenge the 36-yearold Woodland Hills High School graduate, who, from Day 1, was seen caring for her North Braddock and surrounding communities, pretty much going door-to-door to see how she could help others.

That desire helped her win the Pa. House District 34 seat back in 2018, and she’s been on the up ever since.

Sure, the Courier is an African American publication, but the real question is, why would we endorse Patel over Congresswoman Lee? Patel hasn’t done anything of note that would make the majority of African Americans in this area call her a “difference-maker” for them.

Congresswoman Lee remains relevant in Black Pittsburgh, and it’s apparent with her helping to secure federal funding to revitalize Bedford Dwellings in the Hill District, secure more than $1 million to expand diaper distribution networks for thousands of kids in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, and is a tireless advocate for increased affordable housing in the area.

Congresswoman Lee has a very strong network. Oftentimes, people who are against you like to speak out and make waves, and they may seem as though they’re in the majority. But when April 23 comes, and it’s time to put up or shut up, the Courier believes the real network of Summer Lee supporters will speak out with their votes. We will, too.

The New Pittsburgh Courier officially endorses Summer Lee for Democratic nominee for the 12th Congressional District. Below, you’ll find our other endorsements in this Primary Election. “Here comes trouble!” Obviously, he thought Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jeff Hawley, Matt Gaetz, J.D. Vance, Kari Lake, Tommy Tuberville and a few more of the Black people he sends out for show would be able to save him, but he arrived at a point where that wasn’t enough—so he commanded the presence of what looks to be the last hope for a Republican Speaker of the House! That wasn’t working out too well, so he had to send for him to stop what he was doing and make it down to get his charge from the Orange Man by kissing his ring as so many have been required to do.

To his credit, Speaker Mike Johnson appeared to be nervous—but he was still reckless to even go to Mar-A-Largo to prove his support for “election integrity.”  Obviously, he missed the class that taught definitions!

Vice-President Kamala Harris has been on the road lately to make sure we women understand what’s at stake not just for women of color, but also for White women, and we need to hold some classes for them like the ones Vice-President Harris has been teaching lately.  If they

don’t understand what the Orange Man’s Party has in mind for them, as well as for us, then God forbid, they are allowed to return to the White House to govern everything, including women’s bodies. We will do everything in our power to be sure we don’t return to a time when women didn’t even have the right to vote. No, we won’t go back! The position on women’s right to choose what happens to our bodies, it’s just a matter of time before we are taken back to a time when not even our White sisters had no rights.  As a matter of fact, they were the property of their husbands. To come up with what Arizona recently chose to do, has taken away a woman’s right to choose.  That court went back to a time when Arizona was not even a state!

Every person must “prove to be an American citizen before being allowed to register to vote.”   Orange man is a threat to our democracy. He cares only about revenge and retribution. These days, so many people are reminding us of Maya Angelou’s statement when she said,

“When people tell you who they are, believe them the first time.”  We’ve been told over and over again who many Republican lawmakers are. We’d better start believing them or we’ll be back in 1894 when leaders like Vice-President Harris would be in slavery, as would other minority women, and White women would be owned by their husbands who would be in total control of what all women are allowed.

Listen to the case Vice-President Harris is so eloquently making these days when she says, “They want to take us back to the 1800’s, but we are not going to let that happen.” For those who’re mumbling about supporting the Orange Man, please listen as Aretha Franklin so eloquently said, “You Better Think.” If you’re being led by those who are even thinking about sending the Orange Man back to the White House. Take the time to listen to your grandparents and others who survived. They had no rights as a White man, Judge Roger Taney said, “Blacks had no rights which the White man was bound to respect.” Never forget there are many such people still among us! Many among us believe the same about women and our rights.  Your vote stops them from keeping it that way.

Billions of U.S. dollars are annually directed to the region as military aid to Israel, including over $10 billion in arms supplied to Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in the last five months alone including $50 million of Pennsylvania tax dollars invested in bonds to fund what I believe to be a genocide.   The Pennsylvania presidential primary on April 23 presents a crucial opportunity to use the democratic process to advocate for what three quarters of all Democrats and the majority of Americans are calling for lasting ceasefire in Gaza.

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—On Earth

Day 1993, I delivered the first major speech of my life. It was in New York City’s Bryant Park, kicking off a nationwide tour to rally opposition to the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The crowd was about 10,000 people. I was there representing the Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC) and joining national leaders from the environmental and labor movements. I was 20 years old and it was nerve-racking. It was my first time speaking to a crowd that was not principally students. And helped me find my public voice, not just on the environment but on the rights of working people.

Now, 31 years later, Earth Day 2024 again marks a moment when the fate of our planet and the fate of working people in our country are tied together.

The climate crisis can only be solved with our transition to an economy based on clean energy. And that next economy is here.

Unlike 31 years ago, the landmark policies now shifting the economic landscape are providing powerful incentives for investments in the country and the planet. They are bills like the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Biden-Harris administration’s infrastructure law.

NAFTA’s incentives all pointed in the wrong direction for the environment (as well as jobs). It gave polluters legal backdoors to challenge environmental protections outside our courts. It made it harder for Canada to regulate fossil fuels. And it created pressure to increase environmentally harmful farming and mining practices in Mexico.

Now the incentives are pointing the right way. The IRA has $40 billion in tax credits to expand clean technology manufacturing. That includes a manufacturing production tax credit to support the expansion of solar, wind, and battery manufacturing and critical minerals processing. These four sectors are part of the foundation of the next economy. And this tax credit—only a fraction of the power of the IRA— will create more than 560,000 good jobs over the next decade. It also represents the path to keeping the US competitive globally by helping to bring supply chains to America.

E2 is an organization of business leaders pushing policies that are

I am choosing to write-in “Uncommitted” on the presidential ballot line. Our votes in the Democratic Primary are a crucial tool to signal the urgent need for change in the Biden administration’s approach in Gaza. We have a unique opportunity

You, too, can cast your vote for “Uncommitted” by simply filling in the bubble next to “write-in” under the Presidential ballot line and write “Uncommitted.” Your writein vote will be counted the same as the rest of the votes on your ballot. It’s time to end the violence. Add your vote to the movement for peace. (Miracle Jones is a community organizer and advocate located in Pittsburgh.)

both good for the economy and good for the environment. As of last week, they report at least 301 major clean energy projects have been announced in 41 states and Puerto Rico since passage of the IRA. The eight projects announced just last month alone will create at least 1,700 jobs and pump more than $3 billion into the economy.

E2’s federal advocacy director Sandra Purohit said, “the clean energy economy is once again showing no signs of slowing down. Federal clean energy investments in the IRA are working; they are spurring private investment, thousands more jobs in America’s resurgent manufacturing sector, and they will spark thousands more jobs in those communities to support the new workers and clean energy supply chains being built across the US.”

Critically, sectors other than manufacturing have an important part to play as well. Financial institutions must divest from fossil fuels to make way for clean energy. Aside from tax incentives, the clean energy transition itself offers a powerful incentive for this. As the transition picks up steam, fossil fuel companies are a riskier and riskier bet for long-term growth.

And companies across the board —whether they manufacture goods outside of green tech or provide services—can choose to make their own energy decisions greener. One example is the deal announced in January, between Microsoft and the solar panel manufacturer Qcells. Microsoft agreed to purchase 12 gigawatts of solar modules and Engineering, Procurement and Construction services over eight years. That is enough energy to power more than 1.8 million homes annually. It will help Microsoft hit its own sustainability goals and it will help Qcells—which has the Western Hemisphere’s largest solar manufacturing facility in Dalton, Georgia—create even more good-paying manufacturing jobs.  Every year, companies commemorate Earth Day by changing their logo for a day or putting out empty public relations messages. In some cases, they attempt to “greenwash” their own poor environmental records. This year, companies have the opportunity to take a more genuine approach and commit to being part of the clean energy transition. The IRA and infrastructure bill offer immediate financial incentives. Clean energy’s increasing resilience and affordability make it good for business in the long term. And it will create a windfall of good jobs, so it is an investment in the American worker.

The battle over Social Security

The Black community as a whole can never afford to lose empathy for one another. One of the core challenges in maintaining social justice is communicating the need for empathy. It is most critical to be willing to put yourself in another person’s shoes to understand their feelings, plight, and perspectives while using that understanding to guide your actions.

The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental God-given right that the Founding Fathers deemed worthy enough to recognize, uphold, and protect. In his sworn duty as president, Franklin Roosevelt understood and accepted the need to protect this fundamental right. In his 11th State of the Union address, Roosevelt said, “This Republic had its beginning, and grew to its present strength, under the protection of certain inalienable political rights… our rights to life and liberty. As our nation has grown in size and stature, and as our industrial economy expanded, these political rights proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness.”

He explained, “We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence.” To assure equality in the pursuit of happiness, Roosevelt spoke of having a second Bill of Rights. During his address, Roosevelt added, “We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race or creed.”

From empathy and concern for others, the second Bill of Rights included: the right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation; the right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation; the right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living; the right of every businessman, large or small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad; the right of every family to a decent home; the right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health; the right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment; the right to a good education.

Victim response to UN’s 30th commemoration of Rwanda genocide

The Rwandan genocide stunned the entire world in 1994. The Hutu majority systematically exterminated around 800,000 of the minority Tutsis in 100 days.

Noam Schimmel, a Global Studies instructor at UC Berkeley, published an essay in 2022 titled What Caused the Rwandan Genocide Against the Tutsi?  Schimmel stated that the Belgian colonialists pursued a strategy of divide and conquer that sowed the seeds of hatred and resentment that yielded a Hutu supremacist regime.

During a candlelight ceremony on April 12, the United Nations pledged to never forget the 1994 Rwandan genocide. If the Rwandan genocide victims could talk, they would expand on Schimmel’s remarks and chastise the United Nations.

The Rwandan genocide victims would claim that the Belgians intensified preexisting tribal conflict by promoting a pseudoscientific notion known as the Hamitic Hypothesis.

Westerners are more aware of the Curse of Ham.

The name Ham means “burnt” or “black” skin in Hebrew. According to the Roman-Jewish historian Josephus, the descendants of Noah’s son, Ham, populated Africa. In the Old Testament story, Noah cursed Ham’s son to be a servant of servants to his brothers. European Christians used Josephus and the Old Testament to assert that all Africans were destined to serve others, then invented the Curse of Ham to justify White supremacy and African slavery.

The Hamitic Hypothesis, on the other hand, changed Ham’s race.

According to the Journal of African History (1969), Napolean’s expedition to Egypt in 1798 served as a historical catalyst that provided the Western world with the impetus to turn Noah’s son Ham into a Caucasian. As a result, the Ham-

itic Hypothesis held that the Hamites, thought to be a branch of the Caucasian race, brought everything valuable to Africa. Belgians believed that the minority Tutsis were genealogically closer to White Europeans than the majority Hutus, resulting in the Belgians elevating the Tutsis over the Hutus in social, economic, and political affairs. Rwanda gained independence in 1962. The division produced by Belgium’s pseudo-scientific racial theory was a legacy of colonial rule. Christian churches were also a colonial legacy. The Belgians supplanted the traditional monotheistic faith with Christianity. The Rwandan genocide victims would admit that the false racial theory contributed to their demise, but they would blame the church for failing to eliminate the false theory’s residue. If there was ever a time for a homegrown “liberation theology,” it was in Rwanda from 1962 to 1994, but the churches helped create a vengeful order of Hutu supremacy instead.

The Rwandan genocide victims would curse the priests and ministers who played key roles in inciting, organizing, and carrying out the massacre. Largescale rape, torture, and murder of Tutsis took place inside Catholic and Anglican churches.

In 2017, the Pope issued a pitiful apology for the church’s role in the Rwandan genocide, but the United Nations’ role was even worse. The United Nations promised to never

forget the atrocities of those 100 days, but the Rwandan genocide victims would see it as disingenuous for the UN to remember the horrors it chose to ignore in real time. The United Nations should remember that it had the opportunity to lead the way in stopping the genocide, but it decided against it.

The United Nations was established following World War II to avert horrors such as the Holocaust and Hiroshima. When a genocide occurs anywhere in the world, United Nations members have a responsibility to take action to stop it.

Schimmel wrote, “Instead of keeping its peacekeeping force in Rwanda and expanding it to intervene and seek to prevent and stop the genocide, the United Nations shamefully … cut down its forces, withdrew most of its troops, and did this with the active support of the U.S., Great Britain, France, and most of the members of the UN and its Security Council, in effect green-lighting the genocide.”

The genocide was informally sanctioned when the United Nations and its members declined to label the mass killings in Rwanda as genocide. American and European media described Rwanda’s crisis as spontaneous tribal violence.

According to PBS News Hour, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East/Africa, Molly Williamson, advised against using the term genocide to describe events in Rwanda because a “genocide finding” would commit the U.S. to actually “do something.”

The Rwandan genocide victims would prefer that the United Nations and its members remember their moral failings and rededicate themselves to the original mission of preventing World War II-style atrocities for the rest of the twenty-first century, rather than a renewed commitment to never forget the 100 days of slaughter.

Discriminatory laws have driven Black voters from the polls

Each of these rights becomes a personal milestone that a person strives to achieve regardless of their background and station in life. These rights, when fulfilled through determination and hard work, can allow individuals and families the opportunity for prosperity, success, and upward mobility. They represent a part of the American dream and the true inspiration behind the Declaration of Independence.

Social Security, as we know it today, is a byproduct of Roosevelt’s second Bill of Rights. The establishment of the Social Security program came from the understanding and compassion that the elderly should be able to retire and spend their later years of life with dignity and financial security. In seven months, the American voters will choose who controls the White House, the U.S. Senate, and the House of Representatives. In making those critical choices, we also decide the long-term future of Social Security and Medicare.

For years, Social Security and Medicare, as safety net programs, have remained the target of Republican budget attacks despite how the programs help their constituents. In keeping with the spirit of Franklin’s second Bill of Rights, defenders of Social Security and Medicare have again sounded the alarm. House Republicans have proposed a budget for fiscal year 2025 that Democratic lawmakers have described as being an attack on seniors, veterans, and the middle class.

Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan Boyle, the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, released a statement after the Republican Study Committee announced its 2025 budget. He wrote, “The House GOP has now gone further than ever with their attacks on Social Security and Medicare as we know it, and making trillions in devastating cuts that would raise the cost of living for working families.” In contrast, Congressman Boyle and Senate Budget Committee chairman Sheldon Whitehouse have introduced the Medicare and Social Security Fair Share Act. The legislation will indefinitely extend the solvency of Social Security and Medicare by making the nation’s highest earners contribute their fair share, as verified by the Chief Actuaries of the Social Security Administration and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Social Security is especially important to people of color because they are less likely than White Americans to have pensions or retirement savings. As a result, Social Security is the sole source of retirement income for 33 percent of Blacks compared to 18 percent of Whites based on a National Academy of Social Insurance study. A growing number of Black voters are becoming frustrated with President Biden and are more open to voting against him. Many voters who are undecided between Trump and Biden may not depend on Social Security and Medicare as do others. Can those same frustrated voters accept that all people don’t have the same privileges when it comes to the elderly and retirement? Can those same frustrated voters have empathy and respect for others when making critical election deci-

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—“If the United States wants to make good on its foundational claims of a democratic system of governance open to all citizens, it must find ways to close the racial turnout gap. Wider now than at any point in at least the past 16 years, the gap costs millions of votes from Americans of color all around the country. Perhaps most worrisome of all, the gap is growing most quickly in parts of the country that were previously covered under the preclearance regime of the 1965 Voting Rights Act until the disastrous Shelby County ruling.” – Brennan Center For Justice Driven in part by restrictive laws enacted since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, the racial voting gap has exploded and grows wider by the year.

The National Urban League is fighting back. Reclaim Your Vote is a national effort to promote voter registration, voter education, and voter activation with the power of the Urban League Affiliate and Volunteer movement and our strategic partners.

Each year, we engage millions of voters across the country to increase voter turnout and empower our communities to make their voices heard to drive change where they live and across America.

But until the Voting Rights Act is restored, we’re fighting an uphill battle.

While the racial voting gap has grown across the country, an analysis by the Brennan Center for Justice found, it has grown twice as quickly in jurisdictions that had been covered by Section 5 of

the Voting Rights Act until the Supreme Court struck it down with its decision in Shelby v. Holder in 2013.

Just the year before the decision, with President Obama’s reelection at stake, overall Black voter participation reached near-parity with Whites. In the 2008 presidential election, the participation among young Black voters and Black women exceeded every other racial, gender and ethnic group.

The Shelby decision took a sledgehammer to that progress.  Since 2013, at least 29 states have passed nearly 100 laws making it harder for eligible citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

As the Brennan Center notes, “Many of these new laws are racially discriminatory. There is ample evidence that these kinds of laws fall hardest on communities of color, and a number have been struck down by courts as racially discriminatory.”

Driven by this relentless campaign of voter suppression, the racial voting gap in 2022 was the largest midterm gap since at least 2006, robbing the nation of a staggering 14 million votes.

In the presidential election of 2020, the racial gap represented about nine million votes, far more than President Biden’s 7 million vote margin of victory in the popular vote.

While many states rushed to pass restrictive laws immediately after the Shelby decision—Texas announced the very same day it would implement a strict voter ID law that had been denied preclearance—the onslaught hasn’t relented. Last year, lawmakers introduced more than 350 restrictive bills in 47 states, with at least 17 of them in 14 states passed into law.

In the coming weeks, Urban League staffers and volunteers will be taking to the streets, knocking on doors and visiting college campuses helping eligible citizens navigate these changes to state laws and register to exercise their right to vote. We’ll be text-banking and phone-banking, engaging face to face and on social media, making sure our communities are armed with accurate information and prepared to cast their ballots.

At the same time, we continue to fight on the state level for fair voting laws and on the national level for the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and the Protecting Our Democracy Act.

“We need our democracy to work, we need poverty to end, we need disenfranchisement to be a thing of the past, because when people are suppressed or oppressed it rages,” Stacy Abrams said. “It may be silent for some time but eventually it will come out.”

Voter ‘indecision’ just another form of confessing political cowardice

The 2024 election process is already exasperating, with months to go before voters go to the polls. Here is some old-fashioned, simple advice for voters serious about the outcome of the next election, “calm down… it’s going to be all right.”

This entire ordeal has been complicated by too many things to mention, not least of which is that one of the two candidates has been indicted four times on 91 charges of criminal misconduct. Under ordinary circumstances, that would be enough to decide the candidate’s fate, and any reasonable person would be wondering why there is even debate on the issue. But reasonable is non-existent in this climate.

Take the age issue, one candidate is 81 years old and portrayed as a fumbling, sleepy, shy individual in whom we might be in danger to place our trust. The other candidate is only four years younger, 77 years old. How can age be a factor with two people so close in age they would have attended high school at the same time. And how can age be so troubling when evidence of capacity to perform has been so clearly demonstrated by

Commentary

the incumbent. Both candidates have stumbled going on and off the stage. Both of them have been accused of verbal gaffes while speaking. What is the distinction that makes it so important to examine the 81-year-old who is proven efficient and ignore the 77 years his opponent has spent in life.

To be candid, of the two, one has a much more suspicious past. Bankrupt seven times, guilty of racial discrimination lawsuits in terms of renting space to minority seekers. Guilty of being absolutely wrong about the Central Park tragedy. Even confronting his mistake, which included a full-page ad in the New York Times, he said the individuals accused needed to be executed. That was our first hint that he had no regard for the judicial system. He is

manifesting that Rado in countless contempt of court violations, and nobody seems to care. He remains a vicious, racist, misogynistic xenophobe, and his aggressive lack of compassion for the international community grows with each passing day.

As for the 81-year-old being called incompetent, he has lowered prescription costs, given student rebates for college tuition, addressed inflation, increased employment, and improved relationships with all world leaders. He has improved the environment and infrastructure, enhanced race relations, and is working vigorously to address other critical concerns. What could the issue possibly be?

Some sum it up using the theory that the younger candidate wants a wider America, and the older candidate still sees this nation as being a melting pot that represents many.

This election should not be that tough.

One man wants to be an autocrat and run the nation with an iron hand. The other believes in democracy and diplomacy. If that’s not enough to help you make up your mind, you shouldn’t vote.

THE COLOR OF MONEY

Ya gotta spend money to make money, if you're the Pirates

Famed comedian Richard Pryor featured a piece on one of his albums and I vaguely recollect the monologue beginning something like this: “Hello there friends and neighbors, has God blessed you today? Well, if he hasn’t just send us twenty dollars and we’ll send you a genuine blessing from God.”

For many years, it appeared as if the Pittsburgh Pirates management might have expected some Powerball-like windfall to unexpectedly rain money from clouds to erase their fiscal and small market shortcomings, as well as the winning team that would come with it. For more than three decades, the Pirates fans have reminded me of some religious and faithful zealots sitting with their hands on the radio or their eyes fixed on the television hoping and sometimes expecting a resurrected spirit and a long-expected blessing of competition and winning to come

forth. I am and shall remain a man of God, forever and a day. But my late father, Oprah Elliott Bruce, once said: "I love God, but we must often get more callouses on our hands, than our knees.”

In other words, we may pray about it, but we must work equally as hard at being about it.

When the Pittsburgh Pirates hired the late Syd Thrift as the general manager of the team on November 7, 1985, even Thrift had difficulty visualizing the future success of the ballclub saying, "It ain't easy resurrecting the dead."

It may not have been all about the budget, but it certainly was all about the talent. But things may be changing.

In 2024, according to www.spotrac.com, the only teams that spent less active cash than the Pirates are concerned were the Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Guardians, Tampa Bay Rays, Minne-

sota Twins, and Chicago White Sox.

From 2018-2022 including a one-year “hiatus” due to COVID-19, the Pirates' attendance fell below the attendance figures from the years of 1973-1978.

Could it have been, “the

Ides of Blackness?” Maybe or maybe not, because instead of playing in the middle of October chasing a championship, the Buccos have often found the team smack dab in the middle of a full-blown non-competitive and losing crisis.

Up to this point, I have been a nemesis and constant critic of the fiscal policies of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the disastrous results of those ill-fated policies. However, Mr. Bob

Nutting is a successful businessman, and he certainly knows when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. Why would Bob Nutting set up a restaurant selling filet mignon, twice-baked potatoes, and baby asparagus in a neighborhood that could only afford potted meat and crackers? The Pirates' Western Pennsylvania fan base was and remains mired in the quicksand-based imaginary generational imagery based on what a traditional ballclub is expected to look like, smell like, act like, and be like even in the 21st century. A brown bomber from Brooklyn or Miami with gold teeth and swingin' dreadlocks may not quite cut the mustard. At this point in the new millennium, Bob Nutting can only react on whether to buy or sell per the FMR (fair market value) based on the demographic. Let me explain why.

On September 1, 1971, the Pirates proudly became the first MLB fran-

chise to field a starting lineup that consisted of all Black and Latino players. The nine players in the lineup were: Rennie Stennett (2B), Gene Clines (CF), Roberto Clemente (RF), Willie Stargell (LF), Manny Sanguillen (C), Dave Cash (3B), Al Oliver (1B), Jackie Hernandez (SS), and Dock Ellis (RHP). Oh by the way, the Pirates went on to win the 1971 World Series defeating the American League champions, the Baltimore Orioles.

In today's social and political climate, if the Pirates fielded an all-Black and Latino lineup, there is a distinct possibility that the few fans taking in a game at PNC Park would be eating popcorn, peanuts, and cotton candy with obese and opportunistic pigeons, hanging out somewhere above in the rafters.

It is clearly understood that some folks would rather lose rooting for an athlete that they can relate to than win with a

player that they would not, even in the best of circumstances, invite over to share a few brewskis and cheeseburgers. Over the years, people have fretted and whined about the Pirates selling and trading away players with ultrabright futures, just to fatten up an already obese bottom line. However, I recently experienced an epiphany that has clarified a few of these issues for me. The Pirates have been and remain backed into a corner. They are tasked with competing or selling tickets; there is no gray area. In 2024, the Bucs seem to be attempting to lay a great foundation on which to build a future for Major League Baseball in Pittsburgh. Our region had better chase and jump on the bandwagon. If not, oh well. The New Orleans, or Charlotte Pirates has a sort of futuristic ring to it. I’m sure a few of you may agree.
