Orientation Schedule Booklet

Page 1

On behalf of the entire 2011 Orientation Staff, congratulations on becoming a member of this year’s talented first-year class and a part of the Michigan Technological University community! Participation in Orientation helps new first-year students create the future at Michigan Tech by laying a strong foundation for their university experience and offering a welcoming atmosphere where students can develop connections to campus. Throughout Orientation Week you will: • Learn how to navigate the academic and social transitions to college. • Get involved and meet new people. • Find out about campus resources, services, and opportunities for involvement. • Have fun! During Orientation Week, you will receive a tremendous amount of valuable information. Some of this information you will be able to use right away; some you may need to use later. As you get comfortable here, take time to explore your different areas of interest. While you are challenging yourself academically, get to know different types of people, try something new, and make the most of every minute here at Michigan Tech. Your Orientation Team Leaders (OTLs), Academic Advisors, professors, Resident Assistants (RAs), Commuter Assistants (CAs), and many others are here to assist you throughout your years at Tech. If there is anything we, at the Center for Orientation, Mentoring, Parents, and Academic Student Success (COMPASS), can do to help, please feel free to contact us at 906-487-3558, or send an email to compass@mtu.edu. Best of luck as you get inspired!

Stamp Sheet This schedule will be stamped at most of the events that you will attend throughout Orientation Week. By the end of the week, you will need seventeen stamps in order to be able to complete your fall semester registration during your team’s designated time. Of the seventeen stamps you need, you will receive six stamps for attending the six team meetings, and eight stamps for attending the core programs. To obtain the remaining three elective stamps, you may attend an additional Student Development Session (held Wednesday), University Expo, Music, Arts, and Theater, or the Summer Reading Speaker. If you do not get the required seventeen stamps by the time you are scheduled to register, you will have to wait until the last available time slot to register for your remaining courses. Some class options may not be available at that time, so it is in your best interest to attend at least seventeen events. Your stamp list will be checked during Team Meeting 6 on Thursday at the designated meeting time. If you have accumulated the required seventeen stamps, you will be able to register for courses with your team. If you have any questions, please ask your OTL.
