During Orientation Week, you will receive a tremendous amount of valuable information. Some of this information you will be able to use right away; some you may need to use later. As you get comfortable here, take time to explore your different areas of interest. While you are challenging yourself academically, get to know different types of people, try something new, and make the most of every minute here at Michigan Tech. Your Orientation Team Leaders (OTLs), Academic Advisors, Professors, Resident Assistants (RAs), Commuter Assistants (CAs), and many others are here to assist you throughout your years at Tech. Checklist

Go to the Rozsa Center to pick up your New Student Check-in packet. Move into your room. Remember that there is a 30-minute time limit for unloading your belongings at the residence halls to ensure that the process runs smoothly for everyone. After unloading, please park student cars in lots 9, 10, 21, or 24 to keep the unloading zones clear during Move-in Weekend. You may move your vehicle to your designated lot on Monday, August 27. All visitors and parents must park their vehicles in lots 9 or 10. Make sure to get your Tech Express ID card before Monday, August 27 as you will need this for swipe access to computer labs, your residence hall, and the dining hall for meals. (See below for details) If you have a car, confirm and finalize your parking arrangements:

1) If you are living on campus and registered online for your parking assignment, you must pick up your parking decal from Transportation

Services in Walker Arts & Humanities Center (11) 120A. 2) If you live on campus and have not yet registered your vehicle, go to Transportation Services in Walker Arts & Humanities Center (11) 120A to do so as soon as possible. 3) If you are a commuter student, you may register your vehicle for parking on campus at Transportation Services in Walker Arts & Humanities Center (11) 120A, if you have not already done so online. Note: You will need a photo ID and current vehicle registration to pick up your parking decal. Transportation Services is based in room 100 of the Administration Building (1) and is only in Walker during Move-In weekend. They will be available on Saturday, August 25 from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM and on Sunday, August 26 from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Get your computer connected. If you need assistance, stop by the Library and IT Service Center in the Van Pelt and Opie Library (17) or call 906-487-1111. Get your textbooks at the bookstore. Note: You will need your Michigan Tech ID to access your schedule and list of required books. Introduce yourself to your Resident Assistant (RA). Look for your Orientation team assignment on the front of this booklet and get ready to have an awesome Orientation Week!

Getting Your Michigan Tech ID Card The Tech Express ID card is your official Michigan Tech photo identification. This card will gain you access to events and give you swipe access to the computer labs, your residence hall, and the dining halls for meals. Whether you submitted your photo online or need to have it taken, you can obtain your Tech ID at the Tech Express Service Center in Walker (11), 120A. The center will be open from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Saturday, August 25 and 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Sunday, August 26. A form of photo ID and your Michigan Tech M-number are needed to get your ID card. Note: The Tech Express Service Center is based at the Library and IT Service Center in the Van Pelt and Opie Library (17) and is only in Walker during Move-in Weekend.

ISO Password Sync In your Michigan Tech Guide, you received a username and password that will allow you to login to campus computers and access Michigan Tech online resources such as your Michigan Tech email account and Banweb. However, you must first sync this password in order to use it for each of these services. To sync your ISO password: •Go to www.login.mtu.edu •On the menu on the left side of the page, click Active Directory/ISO Password Synchronization •Type the username and password that you received with your Michigan Tech Guide to log in •Enter your password in the required fields and click Sync Password You can use the same ISO password to access all of Michigan Tech’s resources and services. This will be very important when you register for classes during Orientation, so be sure to sync your password as soon as possible, if you have not done so already. If you have misplaced your Michigan Tech Guide, you may obtain your ISO login information by calling 888-688-1885, emailing mtu4u@mtu.edu, or visiting the Admissions Office in the Administration Building (1), G29.

Your Course Schedule and Academic Advisor Information You should log into BanWeb to print your current course schedule. Go to www.banweb.mtu.edu and enter your ISO username and password. Click on the Student Services option, and then click on the Registration option. You can then print your Student Detail Schedule or your Student Grid Schedule. It is best to have a copy of your course schedule with you during Orientation Week. On BanWeb, you can also access your academic advisor information. Click on Student Services, then Student Records, and then click the Academic Information option. This screen will include your advisor’s name and contact information.

Lindsay has toured her solo show across the globe from New Zealand to Norway, and charmed the world’s magic elite at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood. Inspired by classic vaudeville and golden-era comedy, she has spent her life working tirelessly to perfect the art of making people happy. Also an accomplished actress, Lindsay has appeared in films such as The Darwin Awards and The Lost Coast, both of which were featured at major film festivals. Lindsay’s performances showcase her wide variety of skills, which range from acting to physical comedy to juggling.

This information session will provide an overview of the ExSEL program for incoming participants and their parents. ExSEL offers student support and leadership development for incoming and continuing students. Jump-start the week with a complimentary breakfast to energize you for Orientation Week. You can find your team number at the front of this booklet. In the event of rain, on-campus residents can eat in their residence hall dining hall, and commuter students can eat in any of the dining halls. Students admitted to the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at this time before they will be able to register for classes. Modern Language Placement Testing Center Open – French and German Walker (11), 113

This test is for students who have pre-registered to take a comprehension test in French or German for placement in the appropriate language course. It is also possible to register on-site; the registration fee is $5.00. Allow 30 minutes for the test; it must be completed by 3:30 pm. The test is online, and you will receive your results immediately. All Michigan Tech students are required to fulfill a certain number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) courses. Attend this session to hear Professor Dr. John Jaszczak share tips and strategies about how to be successful in your science courses.

Conor Grennan will discuss his memoir, Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal, by sharing anecdotes about his three month volunteer experience at the Little Princes Children’s Home in a small Nepalese village, how that transformed into a personal mission of reconnecting trafficked children with their families and his message about volunteerism.

One of the wonderful things about college campuses is that they bring together people from varying backgrounds, which allows you to learn about others and expand your interests while also finding common ground with your fellow students. As exciting and rewarding as it can be to develop new relationships, sometimes tension and misunderstandings result from differences in background, expectations, and experiences. To help prepare you for the college transition, the staff of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion will introduce the concept of diversity in a new way, helping you to think about diversity in terms of both your own identity as well as the identity of others. This session is intended to make you feel more comfortable engaging with others and navigating moments of conflict that may occur during the getting-to-know-you phase.

Welcome Week You’ve registered for classes. Now what? It’s time for Welcome Week 2012! Every year, new and returning students are welcomed back to campus with this annual tradition that will get everyone into the Husky Spirit. Welcome Week is an on-campus experience that kick-starts every fall semester. This tradition is designed to complement the Orientation experience, and provide opportunities to enhance academic and personal success for Tech students. In between classes and doing homework, the week is jam-packed with social activities, food, entertainment, and much more! International Student Rights and Responsibilities

International and exchange students studying in the US must follow certain rules and regulations in order to stay in the country legally. Attend this session to begin building the skills you need to thrive in a high-stress environment and to remain calm and focused while taking important exams or giving presentations in front of other students and your professors.

Understanding International Instructors

At Michigan Tech you will have the opportunity to take classes with instructors from other countries who speak English with an accent. Although some students shy away from this intercultural experience due to fear of language difficulties, this orientation session will give you strategies to listen and communicate so that you can do well in the class as well as gain intercultural communication experience that will enrich your education and be a valuable resource for the workplace when you graduate.

Aquanauts

Are you interested in SCUBA diving the Keweenaw? Come learn about the Aquanauts at Michigan Tech, the local student run SCUBA club. For $20 per semester, we supply divers with everything needed to dive the wrecks and underwater features of the area, and plenty of opportunities to do so.

Sledheads

Sledheads, the snowmobile club of Michigan Tech, is a group of students and alumni that share the passion of snowmobiling. The Upper Peninsula is a great place to snowmobile and members of the club do everything from trail riding and vintage races, to boon docking and trips out west. If you like snowmobiling or just like to have a good time, come check us out! We do a lot of other things besides just snowmobiling so there is no need to have a snowmobile to join the club! If you like having a good time, then there is no reason for you to not join Sledheads!
