Dear MMPC Attendees,
On behalf of the entire Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council’s (MMSDC) Board of Directors, it is our honor to welcome you to the 2024 Michigan Minority Procurement Conference (MMPC) and Business Opportunity Exchange!
To capture the focus and energy of this exceptional conference, this year’s theme is, “Future Ready –Deliberate Action; Intentional Impact!”
Connecting global, national, and local companies with the top minority business enterprises (MBEs) in Michigan and throughout the country is our goal. MMPC has proven to be an excellent opportunity for MBEs to showcase their capabilities and make strong and valuable connections. The investments we make in ourselves, and the information gathered at this conference, will yield dividends beyond these three days. We encourage you to make the most of this opportunity.
Corporate partners, like General Motors, put our dollars and support behind MMPC because we recognize that our diverse partners are a critical part of our success -- they add value and innovation to our supply team and our products. We, too, are committed to building relationships and ensuring our supply base not only reflects the diversity of our team members and customers, but also the communities we serve. Our enthusiasm and creativity ensure this happens.
Serving as the Chair for the MMSDC Board, I have seen the dedication and commitment of the MMSDC team to lessen the equity gap and encourage opportunities that grow and scale MBEs. Thank you to Michelle Sourie Robinson and her fantastic team, who worked tirelessly to put this event together. Your efforts to match and connect MBEs with real opportunities and to provide development for both MBEs and our Corporate Partners are appreciated.
At GM, our strong partnership with MMSDC has allowed us to build processes and best practices. GM continues to be committed to fostering a supplier network which shares our values. The MMPC and MMSDCsponsored events have helped us to develop and grow our supplier network to reflect our customers, dealers, and team members.
Our conference speakers are prepared to provide valuable insight and best practices for navigating the rapidly changing environments we all face. Our corporate partners will be available during the Business Opportunity Exchange to begin the dialogue toward partnership. We hope you find the content inspiring and the experience rewarding. Let’s have a great conference and enjoy this week!
Thanks to all of you, our MBEs, and corporate partners, for your continued support.
Jeff Morrison Vice President, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain General MotorsMembers of the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council,
I want to welcome you to the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council’s (MMSDC) 43rd annual Michigan Minority Procurement Conference and Opportunity Fair! With nearly 300 exhibits, one full day of learning sessions, and professional networking events throughout, I hope that your attendance at this trade fair will enable you to accomplish your business’ goals and beyond!
For those of you who are not aware, my father, John A. James, started our family business with one truck, one trailer and NO excuses in 1971. Despite push back from the federal government, including a legal battle at the Supreme Court, my father obtained a 48-state operating authority while easing the burden for minorities to enter the trucking business.
I was blessed to join the family company in 2012 after serving in the United States Army as an Apache helicopter pilot and continue his success by growing the company to new heights.
My family’s story is one that I am sure mirrors many of your stories. It is one of perseverance, hard-work, and a firm belief in the American Dream for all who have the drive to attain it.
During this Michigan Minority Procurement Conference and Opportunity Fair, I hope you all will seize the moment and take the opportunity to meet with the other business owners in our industry. The City of Detroit is blessed to have over 300 MMSDC member corporations and 1,000 member businesses, who are all working collaboratively to grow Michigan’s economy and build America.
I thank you for your participation in this event and wish you and your business the best in the years to come!
Signed, John E. James Member of CongressWe believe supply chains should be as diverse as the customers they serve. That’s why we have a DTE Supplier Diversity team that seeks out local and diverse suppliers. We believe in helping our state and our customers by choosing businesses that support their communities. In 2023, DTE spent $988 million with diverse suppliers which went toward creating jobs in local and diverse communities. Because a supply chain shouldn’t just support its customers; it should also represent and connect them.
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 43rd Annual Michigan Minority Procurement Conference & Opportunity fair! This event is a phenomenal opportunity for forming critical relationships among businesses, both large and small. As a woman who began her career in the automotive and technology spaces, I understand the importance of forming these meaningful connections -of coming together and creating a community that both uplifts and challenges one another.
This conference is a great opportunity to bring together minority business enterprises to share resources and form bonds to advance our goals. I continue to be impressed by the determination of business owners like you who work against all obstacles to achieve the success you hold today.
Congratulations on your achievements and thank you for being here today, your commitment to your business and your community are what make Michigan a great state to live and do business! It is an honor to work with such ambitious and tenacious community leaders, and I look forward to continuing this important work as your partner in Congress.

Oakland County is so pleased to welcome national and local corporations to metro Detroit for this important three-day event designed to foster collaboration and connections. Conferences like this help promote and identify the vast array of work that is open to a diverse pool of vendors looking to expand their reach.
In Oakland County, we are committed to ensuring minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses have an equitable shot at getting county contracts.
Just last month, we held our first “Diverse Connections” event aimed at bringing government agencies and hundreds of vendors together to discuss opportunities available to companies looking to do business with the county. We know how important it is to be intentional about building these relationships.
Enjoy all that the region has to offer during your time at the conference and here’s to growing our pool of qualified and excellent contractors and vendors.
With gratitude,
David Coulter Oakland County ExecutiveGeneral Motors would like to congratulate Jeffrey Morrison, VP of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain as the new Board Chairman of the MMSDC.

Adopted in 2019, the City of Grand Rapids’ Strategic Plan contains six strategic priorities that outline what we as a City strive to achieve. As Mayor of Grand Rapids, I have also been committed to supporting Michigan businesses and entrepreneurs, and aligning with organizations that help our communities close the wealth gap. Gretchen Whitmer Governor of MichiganOn behalf of the MMSDC team it’s my pleasure to welcome you to the the 43rd Annual Michigan Minority Procurement Conference (MMPC). We value your support and commitment! It has contributed to making the MMPC one of the nation’s premier procurement conferences, and for this, we thank you! We are on a journey to economic equity for businesses with an emphasis on Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs). Our shared vision and intention help to make this a reality.
The theme for this year’s conference - ‘Future Ready: Deliberate Action & Intentional Impact captures the focus and energy of what must be done to accomplish our mission. It is our goal to reduce the years it will take to achieve parity from the estimated 333 years to 15 years. Such an aggressive goal is within reach if buying entities become more intentional as they procure products and services. What we endeavor to do here together puts all of us in a better position for success.
MMPC is designed to facilitate the connections necessary for success for major corporations and government agencies as they source the top MBEs from Michigan and throughout the country. Your participation, support and engagement have already made this year’s conference a success. We look forward to the positive impact that will stem from this week’s connections and collaborations.
