Upper Peninsula T

he Upper Peninsula is a magical place. It is a nature and history lover’s paradise with 300 waterfalls, 40 lighthouses, over a hundred historic sites, the majestic Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, rugged Isle Royal National Park and the ever-fascinating Soo Locks. It’s also far enough north that you might even catch a glimpse of the spectacular Northern Lights. Quiet forests, rivers and inland lakes surround picturesque towns, while pockets of agricultural areas dot the landscape. Hay, barley, cattle, potatoes, carrots, onions, winter squash, strawberries, blueberries, Christmas trees and cold-hardy varieties of wine grapes thrive here. Roadside farms, markets and tasting rooms are the perfect place to sample the season’s bounty, along with buttery maple syrup, wild-foraged berry jam, wildflower honey and crisp, flavorful wine.

East Central E

ast-Central Michigan is known for its innovative cities, quiet agriculture areas and sparkling waters. This region includes the Great Lakes Bay area, which surrounds Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron’s Blue Water area, and the fertile farmland of Michigan’s Thumb and the agricultural communities north of Lansing and Flint. This region has a long history in agriculture and once boasted the nation’s largest farm east of the Mississippi River. At one time, Port Huron was considered the Chicory Capital of the United States. Today, this region produces dairy, corn, wheat, sugar beets and potatoes, and is number one in the production of black beans, cranberry beans, small red beans, and pickling cucumbers in the country. Family farms grow a wide variety of produce, especially carrots, apples, pumpkins, squash, berries, and sweet corn.

here’s so much to love about Southwest Michigan! Charming beach towns, lively cities, stunning sunsets and gorgeous agricultural areas situated along the Fruit Belt - a unique growing area created by Lake Michigan’s lake effect – that boasts peaches, apples, grapes, and blueberries. Southwest Michigan’s naturally acidic soils are especially favorable to growing blueberries and have made Michigan the leading producer in the nation. In celebration of these beloved berries, South Haven hosts the National Blueberry Festival, which is one of the country’s oldest continuouslyrunning fruit festivals. Farm markets brim with produce throughout the growing season and offer many items much earlier than most of the state, including melons, cherries and sweet corn. Concord and Niagara juice grapes, and wine grapes are also grown here in Michigan’s oldest wine region.

Southeast S

outheast Michigan is one of the oldest agricultural areas in the state. Long, narrow farms situated along the Detroit River, known as Ribbon Farms, were planted by early French settlers. As a result, pear, apple and cherry trees were common long before the Model T made its debut. Today, Detroit is America’s Great Comeback City and agriculture is a big part of that revitalization. Eastern Market is the largest historic public market district in the nation and urban farming initiatives continue to take root across the region, both big and small. Many of the state’s oldest cider mills and farm markets reside in the communities just beyond the Metropolitan area. Generations of families frequent these beloved landmarks to experience the old-fashioned fun of a corn maze, fresh apple cider and donuts, and the adventure of picking out your own pumpkin.
