Facts About Labor Day From Forbes.com

What are we celebrating? The contributions and achievements of the 155 million men and women who are in the U.S. workforce.

2.

5. 6.

In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to eke out a basic living. Children as young as 5-6 years old worked in factories and mines. The year in which the 8-hour day was firmly established was 1916 with the passage of the Adamson Act.

3. 4.

7. 8. 9.

1.

Labor Day in Canada began in 1872 in Toronto but quickly made its way south to the U.S. Originally it began as a significant demonstration demanding rights for workers. The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. The Labor Day parade of about 10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched from City Hall past Union Square uptown to 42nd street, and ended in Wendel’s Elm Park at 92nd Street and 9th Avenue for a concert, speeches, and a picnic. Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887.

On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

Traditionally people did not wear white or seersucker clothes after Labor Day as it unofficially marked the end of summer. The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend.

your BEST IMAGE

Can it save you 106 hours a year?

By Kathy Friend

When you get ready for your work day, are you mindful about the image your clothing will project? That outward image not only will enchant some and disenchant others, but it can also determine your mood for the day. This is something we all need to think about, not just as professional career driven women, but as stay-at-home moms, work-from- home gals and part-time-job ladies. Are you getting the responses in your job, career, community, kids and family that you want? Maybe it’s time for an image check. Maybe it’s time to polish your image.

W

aiting until the morning to figure out what you are going to wear is too late. The morning can be the most hectic time of our day, especially if we have kids. The additional stress of pulling something to wear out of our closets only to find that it is wrinkled, stained or doesn’t fit isn’t a great start to the day. A better way is to consider your outfit based on the image you want to project. Do this ahead of time in the same way you would approach any organizing project.

Organize

First, make sure the things in your closet are organized. The way it is organized it up to you. I suggest organizing alike items together by color. In other words, all white shirts together, or all black pants together.

Be Inspired

Next, get inspiration. I love Pinterest for this. I browse my favorite stores and pin outfits that I love. Then on those occasions I’m at a loss for what to wear, I head to my Pinterst board and look for an idea.

8 SEPTEMBER 2013 | SASSY

A study done by a UK clothing company polled 2,491 women an d found that on av erage, women spend 16 minute s every weekday morning, 14 minu tes on the weekend and up to 20 minutes before a night ou t pondering what to wear. That's a lot of tim e! Annually, that’s about 6.396 minu tes a year, or 106.6 hours. Who has th at kind of time?

Plan Ahead

Finally, choose your clothing ahead of time. If your schedule and space permits, you might want to do this on Sunday night for the week. If you have kids, this is a great exercise to do together as a family (trust me, it will save a lot of morning arguments about what to wear!). Use a door hook for your outfit combinations. When thinking about your clothes look at your calendar and consider: • What you will be doing? • Where you will be going? • What is the weather forecast to be? • Who you will be seeing? • What is your goal for the day/week? • What impression do you want to make?

Other Tips: Capsule Wardrobe is a Must!

This is a wardrobe that includes groups of items that work with each other in color, cut and pattern. For example:

JACKETS

Black Jacket Red Jacket Casual (Jean) Jacket

Pants

Black trousers Skinny jean

Tops

Skirts

White blouse Stripe top Tunic Print sweater

Black Pencil skirt

INVEST IN STATEMENT ACESSORIES: The same trousers and blouse can look very different based on the jewelry and shoes you wear with them. Investing in some great statement pieces and sassy shoes will allow you many more options in your wardrobe. And don’t get too hung up on being matchy-matchy…things that don’t exactly “go together” can make for a great style statement! TAKE PICTURES: Ya know those days when you pull together a really cute outfit?

Take a selfie! Yes, I am giving you permission to take a picture of yourself in your bathroom mirror. Remember this look the next time you have no idea what to wear, or have one of those days when you aren’t feeling your best. Also, if you are wearing something you seem to be getting a lot of compliments on – document it!

Shoes with a

Cause

A valid reason to buy more shoes. By Meagan Church

Who needs a new pair of shoes? Okay, maybe “needs” is the wrong word. Many of us already have a closet full of them. But, thanks to shoe companies that have begun popping up around the globe, you now have a valid and justified reason to buy more. Why? Because they are shoes with a cause. With each purchase, you not only receive a pair of cute, stylish shoes, but you also give back.

S

ure, we all know about TOMS and now BOBS, but other companies are a bit lesser known. Some even hand make your purchases in African villages where the woman whose hands touch the soles and fabric is the same woman who will receive fair and direct compensation for her hard work. When more purchases means more support for those who need it most, then you have found a way to make shoe buying a win-win scenario.

soleRebels soleRebelsFootwear.co

So, take a look at these lesser-known shoes with a cause companies, and then go online to learn more. But, don’t fear if you want to support local endeavors as well. The sidebar has ways to compliment your new shoe purchases with some locally-sold accessories.

soleRebels offers men’s, women’s and children’s shoes in a wide variety of styles and colors. Each is fair trade, eco-sensible and handcrafted by an artisan in Ethiopia once the shoes are ordered. Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu started the company as a way to bring jobs and education to her community. It has grown to become a globally-recognized shoe company. soleRebels believes in “Making the world a better place. One step at a time.” It does so by creating unique footwear, while helping artisans in Ethiopia develop and support their own families and communities. Because they are made when ordered, it can take four to six weeks to receive your shoes, so order early. Once you see how cute they are, it will be hard to wait.

Shining A Light is located in Arush, Tanzania. Its mission is to “empower women through employment training, education and spiritual enrichment enabling them to impact their family and community.”

Chooze

ChoozeShoes.com Chooze offers women’s and children’s shoes in a variety of colors, patterns and styles. Each pair of shoes consists of two shoes that compliment one another in color and pattern, but they are not exact matches. This of course makes them great conversation pieces, opening up the dialogue to tell others about the company’s mission.

Sseko offers dignified employment to Ugandan women so they can earn money that goes directly toward their college educations. So far, over 30 women have been able to complete their education thanks to the company and more than 40 are currently working toward doing the same.

Shining a Light

ShiningALight.org Shining A Light offers beautiful, hand-beaded, leather sandals that are made by the students in the Women to Work program. Through this program, women can learn a trade and become educated, so they can “earn and learn”

Chooze is referred to as a Good Returns company because it invests its profits in anti-poverty programs at the end of each year. Through this program, women can lift themselves out of extreme poverty by receiving training, support, education and loans to start their own businesses. According to the Chooze website, the business model is “More powerful than a donation, it is a sustainable way to have positive impact, by giving a hand-up rather than a hand-out.”

I’m a No-Fly Girl! By Jane Suter

Warning: what you are about to read is a breath of fresh, crazy, hilarious air in the midst of our professional businesswomen's magazine. It is not for the faint of heart or for those with no sense of humor. If you're afraid of a massive attack of laughter, proceed with caution. ~The Sassy Magazine Administration

I am the Charlie Brown of the skies. No matter how much I plan, pray and desperately will my air-travel experiences to go smoothly, they never do. My latest flight was no different.

A

rriving early at the new Indianapolis International Airport, I was amazed how it practically glowed with its marble floors, snowwhite concrete and gift shops filled to the ceiling with everything Colts and Pacers. With the faint odor of still-drying paint lingering in the air, I pulled my wheeled suitcase up to the security checkpoint that led to the terminals. Here's a question for you, what sick mind picked the word terminal for use in airports? I mean, let's be honest, it's not comforting, m'kay. It basically screams death. Why not rename this area something happy, like Joyville or the You-Are-Totally-Going-To-Make-It Zone. Anyhoo, so I wrangled off my sneakers and placed them into a plastic bin at the TSA checkpoint. I then took out my laptop and placed it in another bin and also sequestered my liquids and medication. What was once a solitary piece of luggage had transformed into an eleven foot caravan of my life. 18 SEPTEMBER 2013 | SASSY

Who’s up for a free colonoscopy? As my Tupperware train moved along the conveyor belt, I entered the magical spinning body scanner. It's pretty cool -- unless you're me. No matter if the alarms go off or not I am always pulled out of line. After many years of speculation, I have decided it's because of two things: I am the whitest-white girl anyone has ever seen and I am compliant to a fault. My blonde hair, blue eyes and inability to dance stick out like a sore thumb to the TSA. No one can be accused of profiling if they pluck me from the mix. Plus, I honestly believe my yielding nature is embedded in my Passports micro-chip. So they pat me down and direct me behind the screen for my strip-search and free colonoscopy. On the bright side, the overwhelming attention makes me feel like a first-class celebrity!

First-class and flying fancy free Speaking of first class, have any of you ever flown in this fancy section? I can only fantasize about the extravagance of it all. In my mind, once that curtain closes, gold and diamonds fall from the ceiling. I bet they also have gigantic bathrooms with ruby toilet seats and free body massages on demand. I'm also betting they get to fly the plane whenever the mood strikes them and, if they get hungry, they give them a jumbo-sized tube of Pringles -- for free!? My closest brush with first class is when I am allowed to trespass through this carnival of delights as I make my way to steerage. It always strikes me that these privileged people never look up, as we common folk wander by. If I were in first class I would make a spectacle of my richyrich self. Maybe break into a moonwalk or the sprinkler as I reveled in my wealth...

Bloody Mary & a defiled magazine Sadly this, my fantasy, collapsed the moment my buns hit my cheap seat. There I was, surrounded by three seat-kicking kids under the age of 8, a narcoleptic seatmate and, to my horror, an airline magazine that had the crossword puzzles AND Sudoku already filled in. In PEN! Yes friends, it was Dante's inferno of aero-hell. So I became a 747 dumpster-diver. Yeah, that's right, I rummaged through the backs of every seat within a 6-aisle radius to find an un-defiled magazine. I would like to say I was ashamed, but I wasn't. Know what else I wasn't? Calm. Too exhausted to sleep and too afraid of crashing to even try, I began my looted puzzle and ordered a Bloody Mary. Which brings me to another word: drink. What they serve on airplanes are not drinks. They are sips and whiffs of liquid refreshment. A drink actually sates ones thirst. Now if I were a gnome or an infant, these miniature cans would totally do the trick. Unfortunately, I am a lifesized human being. So I ordered two "drinks" and settled in. So did my seatmate who was using her foldout table as a pillow. Everything was fine until she did the unthinkable. In rearranging herself she flopped her hand in my drink. INTO. My Drink! As we all know, being on a plane is like prison, and I had no idea what my cellmate was "in" for, so I carefully tapped her knuckles on the side of my plastic cup (Hey, I paid $7 for that!) and pretended nothing happened. I was cool. Until the turbulence started.

Fasten your seatbelts Nothing says fiery plane crash like turbulence. So I gripped my armrest and prayed like it was the apocalypse. What made me sure this was the end were the ear-splitting screams of the youngsters behind me, mixed with the man reciting the Lord's Prayer. Out loud. Over and over again. As our plane safely landed we all sighed with relief. Had our piousness saved us? I doubt it, because moments later people practically stormed over one another to get off the jet. And this Charlie Brown traveler? I was just happy to be alive. So what if the football is swiped away from me every time I try to fly -- I'll still keep trying. Who knows, maybe someday I'll even get to see that gilded bathroom in first class…?

Sassy's Cover Girl, Mother of Two & A Survivor By Chaunie Brusie

20 SEPTEMBER 2013 | SASSY

“Life is crazy, but’s good.”

H

ave you ever heard that old sales pitch adage that goes something along the lines of, “Always answer the phone with a smile on your face?”

office one day with my mom and he sat me down and said (at that point, my mom was 43), ‘You will have start having mammograms when you are 33.’

What did the lump feel like? “The lump felt like there was a pea; it didn’t hurt. Cancer doesn’t hurt. It was moveable. It felt like a little pea.”

The thought is, people can tell when you are smiling, even through the phone. So when I called our cover girl, Heather Bachman, a few weeks ago to chat about her journey as a young mother and breast cancer survivor, I was shocked to find exactly that—a woman, who through it all, keeps on smiling.

“I knew from that point on, that I had cancer.”

What did it feel like to have your cancer confirmed? “After I got the letter, I went into for a special imaging test and when I saw the nurse, I started crying. I wanted my mom there, she was my best, best friend. The nurse brought in the radiologist in and they put that ultrasound wand on—and on-screen, it was black with fingers. I remembered from my mom’s—hers was black. And it had fingers. I looked at the screen and just started crying.

Can you tell us how you discovered your cancer at such a young age? “My cancer journey started when I was 16; my mom was diagnosed when I was 16. She had Stage III breast cancer and they knew it was aggressive. She was told she had six months to live, but she got a second opinion and decided she would treat. My mom and I went through that journey together. She had a radical mastectomy, a bone marrow transplant in Indianapolis, adriamycin chemotherapy and was placed on tamoxifen—and she made it through. I can remember going into the doctor’s Photo by Classic Image Photography

I started having mammograms at age 33 at first, everything was fine; my baseline mammograms were fine.”

What happened next? “I ended up having a mammogram—I was actually a couple months late for it—on Jan 11th. I had it at Lakeland, and got a letter saying there was a finding and I needed a special imaging done. That was on a Friday so I couldn’t call anyone. It was a rough weekend. I tried to convince myself that it was a cyst or benign. But I could feel it. After they told me, I could feel it. I had always done self-exams, I did that all, but after they told me where it was, I could feel it. It was smaller than a pea. I knew deep down that it was here, that it was time. I knew it would always come, I just didn’t know it would come so early. My girls were 5 and 8. I kind of knew. I was 38.”

They scheduled a biopsy; the biopsy was painless. I watched in on a screen and went right back to work. Biopsies are nothing to be afraid of. Two days before my daughter’s birthday on Feb. 3, I was at work and got a call at work from Dr. Quinn’s nurse and she asked if I had time to talk. I work in a machine shop with 50 guys—it’s very loud. So I just asked them to tell me right then. Dr. Quinn said, ‘I have the biopsy results and you SASS Y | SEPTEMBER 2013

have cancer. The type of cancer you have is very aggressive. I want you to see you a surgeon now. Normally, I would have a sit-down in my office to talk, but I want you to get in now.’ “ Editor’s note: Heather discovered she had a rare and very aggressive form of cancer that is called triple-negative cancer. Unlike the most common form of breast cancer, Heather’s is not driven by hormones.

What kind of treatment to did you through? “I had watched my mom get mammograms in her remaining breast and cry and be terrified. I watched my mom for 17 years live in cancer’s shadow; I didn’t want that fear. I knew from then on that I would have a double mastectomy. I didn’t want to worry if [the cancer] would come back. So I opted for a double mastectomy; because the area was so small, we could do a skin and nipple-saving surgery. So they basically did the implants in the same surgery. I’d walk in with breasts and walk out with breasts. I was pretty excited about that.

Were you hopeful about your treatment? I ended up using the same oncologist that had treated my mom. I chose him. When I walked in, it had been 17 years since he had seen my mom; he had attended her funeral. I brought a picture of my mom with me; he went through and studied my case, told me all the facts about triple-negative cancer, that it’s an ugly breast cancer. I put a picture of my mom and scooted it towards him; he remembered what stage she had, how she died, that she was a bus driver-he remembered everything about my mom and I knew I had made the right choice. He looked right at me and I said, “ I cure you.” And I knew right then, that I’d be ok. 22 SEPTEMBER 2013 | SASSY

With my history, my case was presented in front of the Breast Forum on Valentine’s Day. At a Breast Forum, they study your case and hear the facts that come up with your treatment plan; my doctor invited me to go. Many are invited to go and don’t. My advice for all women with cancer is to go. Suck it up; it’s scary as hell, but you will learn so much. This is your life, your healthcare. You have to be your own advocate. If you aren’t, no one will be. So on V-day, I got all gussied up, dressed in my best outfit, and went.

What was the double mastectomy like? I had double mastectomy and the reconstruction done, healed for five weeks, then started chemo. My breasts wouldn’t heal, so the chemo tore open the incision. And actually last week, my left breast implant had to be removed and replaced. I didn’t have to have radiation, so there was no tissue left to radiate to. It was huge to be able to wake up with breasts; I still felt like a woman. My mom was left with this huge scar and I looked down with these beautiful breasts. I ended up losing a nipple, but that’s my new reality. Breast cancer is not pink ribbons; it’s not flowers. This is breast cancer. That’s my new reality at 38. I don’t have a nipple, but I get to see my kids lose another tooth, go to school.

How did work fit into everything? I worked up until my mastectomy and took off five weeks, starting chemo within that. I went back to work after that, and they’ve been great. I come and go as I can. I work as much as I can. I would take off the week of chemo and it was hard. There were days that I would drag myself in, get up and puke and go back in. I was lucky though; it wasn’t as hard as I what my mom went through. I didn’t lose weight, or have nausea, but I didn’t have energy.” How did your daughters handle your cancer? “Right before I got diagnosed, I had described to my daughters that grandma got cancer and cancer is like a monster and grandma fought the monster and grandma beat it; my kids automatically went to ‘there’s a monster inside of a mom’ and they were afraid they could catch it. I got some books from the library from Susan G. Komen, but as time has gone by, I have more confidence and tell them that mom is ok. I was very open with them to tell them what was going on: that mommy had stitches,

would be sore and wouldn’t feel good. They were really understanding. We did a good job with that and we were very honest with it to some degree. In fact, it has became somewhat of a joke with them, and they’ll ask, ‘ Mom are you playing the cancer card?’ ” (laughs)

How have you stayed positive throughout your treatment? “My faith. No amount of worrying is going to change what will happen; I can worry, I can cry, I can lock myself in my room and not live; if I’m going to get cancer again, I will get cancer again, and nothing I do will change that. It’s not a good thing to have—if you have to have breast cancer, triple-negative is not the kind to have, (laughs). It is a choice, and only I can have the choice to stay positive. It’s a gut feeling,

“This won’t take me. My mom was a survivor and so am I.” What are your hopes and dreams for the future? “They exchanged out [my left] implant, so we’re hoping that this heals. Healing is a huge thing with mastectomies—some heal right away, some can struggle for up to a year; I’m one of them. I have chest x-rays every 6 months; that’s my new mammogram. With triple-negative cancer, because it’s so aggressive, it will usually come back within three years; but if it doesn’t, then you’re home free. So for the next three years, I choose to focus on the positive. I just hope and pray it won’t back. We just have to hope like hell that it killed it. We caught mine very early, which is virtually impossible with this kind of cancer. I do think it was divine intervention—my mom. If I was going to have cancer, she was going to make sure we caught it early.”

And how about just for today? “Well, we live on a farm, We have pigs, goats, chickens, rabbits, a pretty active little farm on 20 acres. And we’re knee-deep in 4H right now. Today’s our only free day, [we are going to] ride rides. Life is crazy, but’s good.” And with that, Heather hung up the phone with a laugh and a smile and walked out to enjoy some rides at the local 4H fair with her kids. Riding into the future with a smile on her face and her daughters at her side. That seems to be Heather’s way.

Breast Changes

The most common sign of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. This, however, does not necessarily indicate breast cancer. A lump that is painless and hard is more likey to be cancer, but some cancers are tender and soft. Because of this, it is important to have any breast changes checked by your doctor promptly.

PANACHE, n. { Fr.} style; flair; verve; upscale

Some other possible signs of breast cancer... • swelling or changes in the size or shape of your breast • skin irritation or dimpling • breast pain • nipple pain or sudden inversion • nipple discharge other than breast milk • redness, scaliness or thickening of the nipple or breast skin • a lump or swelling under the arm • rash-like effect and/or warmth in your breast

Animal

Influence

Get in touch with your wild side‌in your home’s design. By: Andrew Skipper

From ancient drawings to modern sculpture, animals have played a constant role in the way humans adorn their dwelling places. Our fascination with actual and mythological creatures has inspired everything from furniture to china. Whether executed literally or figuratively, the influence of animals in home decor have proven to be a theme that will stand the test of time.

Past Times

Noritake's "Royal Hunt" patterned china celebrates animals typically seen on a formal hunting day. Adorned with stag, pheasant, hare and dogs, this set is sure to evoke visions of Europe's past and a tradition that has stood the test of time with the most elite society.

Ball and Claw

Largely popular during the 18th century in England and America, ball and claw feet originally appeared in ancient China symbolizing a dragon's claw clutching the pearl of wisdom. Being associated with power and authority, it's no wonder many of the world's finest homes house furniture with ball and claw feet. 24 SEPTEMBER 2013 | SASSY

Smartly Appointed

Horses have been linked to intelligence, mastery and victory, which is probably why this stately horse lamp would be right at home in a study or library, where one must master work.

Perfectly Pure

This antique stand incorporates intricately carved deer heads, making it a true work of art. This woodland creature has long been associated with purity and mystery, which makes this piece all the more alluring.

Be Daring

Python has become a popular pattern recently. Could it be that snakes are associated with danger, therefore we feel daring using this pattern in our homes? Regardless, this python bowl adds instant edginess to any room.

Take a Look

Natural history prints are a wonderful way to study the physical characteristics of animals up close. Hang a set of them on the wall for a traditional look or prop one on the mantel for a relaxed feel. SASS Y | SEPTEMBER 2013

G A B Rm I EoL s k o l i s an interview with

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in South Bend and grew up in Granger, where I lived pretty much most of my life. I have now lived in Chicago for a little over a year. In 2007, I started a building company and was back and forth quite a bit, and thought there would be more opportunities out there as an artist. And now that I’m out here I work from home as a graphic designer, for a company in South Bend, which is ironic. I’ve been working with them since right when I moved out here as a freelance designer--we have contracts and work with design globally for Hard Rock café, clothing shops, hotels and graphic tees. 26 SEPTEMBER 2013 | SASSY

By Chaunie Brusie

When did your love of art begin?

Probably in middle school. I really [fell for it] by the time I hit high school; I was focused on drawing classes until I was a senior. After high school, I just started working with Photoshop and other Adobe programs on my own and that kind of led me in the direction of graphic design. I never went to college for it; instead, I learned everything on my own, drew everything and went through the process to actually get it printed. Meanwhile I was painting murals as a hobby and then that took off as a career.

How did you get started as a graffiti artist?

That was my passion in high school; it’s what made me think outside the box and get creative. I started by just loving graffiti and then that translated into painting the inside of houses, from kids’ rooms to canvases, rental properties and logos. I went from learning how to do it on the street to doing it inside of businesses and households. There was one spot where I would just practice on under a bridge. Not a lot of people get to see it that way; it’s a totally different style of art, just spraying with a can, and I take that style of art and put it into what I do. I’m doing this guy’s condo in Chicago and using that graffiti style of work but hand-painted with a brush and acrylic.

Tell me about murals in big cities?

For my everyday, I’m doing graphic design and clothing and designing my own line, and then I paint murals on the side. For example, I’m painting one in Granger at a dental office on Cleveland and 3rd and a kids’ room in La Porte. Jack Daniels hired me to do a 16-foot tall logo of their black label and around South Bend I was in the Tribune for doing a wall. I also have a condo in Chicago that I’m working on right now. In South Bend, I did Logan’s, Jamison’s in the bar and DJ booth and big boutique in Chicago.

How do you feel your art is unique?

I guess it’s kind of hard to say, because I have so many different styles. I like to do a lot of layering, graffiti type work, because that’s my specialty, but I can do realistic too. I did a Chicago skyline on three canvases and it looks so realistic people don’t believe it’s painted. That was something totally different, but I can do it. I did one for a lady when they were on vacation, realistic palm trees and stuff, and it looks dead-on, like a photograph. I can take a logo and paint it exactly. Or very cartoony, very cool but different. I can really do all styles but my specialty is to design something for someone on computer or paper, so they get a feel, and then start painting it and get more ideas as I go.

Anything else you want to tell us?

As far as murals go, I never had to advertise. It’s all been through word of mouth. She [Betsy] posted it on Facebook and I got referred by quite a few people. Designing clothing is a passion, but so is painting murals, so I get the best of both worlds. That’s the plus of working for myself—I get to juggle design of clothing for weeks and weeks, and then take a week of and do a mural. My goal is one mural a month. What I want to get out of it, is I’m still busy with my regular job designing clothing, which I really enjoy doing it. Working from home is great. I just ran out and got some supplies, designed some shirts until about 5 p.m., then went a mile down the road and worked on a mural until about midnight. Yesterday I had my first Hard Rock clothing go global!. Lymelite Clothing is my personal line, which I’m trying to launch instead of just being in Chicago. Hopefully by fall I’ll have a whole re-launch of my collection.

Dear Charrise ... Have a co-worker who’s driving you batty? A boss who just won’t listen to reason? Q:

I always seem to procrastinate. I get frustrated because I know what I want but I seem to always stop short of getting it. I think it’s related to my procrastination habit. I jokingly say that I do my best work at the last minute, and yet I put myself under lots of extra pressure when I wait so long to get things done. I think I need to stop procrastinating but I don’t know how. Help?

Charrise Says: Make no mistake: procrastination does not serve you. It will most certainly stop you from living your highest purpose. You know that pressure you feel when you’re on deadline for something? That feeling is definitely having a negative effect on your physical body, whether you realize it or not. Stress eats away at your immune system. You may say that you do your best work at the last minute. Do you know that to be true? Think of a time when you didn’t wait—when you completed something early. Was the result less quality? Most often, procrastination happens because you’re afraid of something. Perhaps you’re afraid your work won’t be good enough? Or maybe you’re afraid someone will judge your work? We generally put off things we fear. Maybe you’re not quite sure how to do something, so you wait, hoping you’ll figure it out. If you can get clear on what your fear is, you may be able to talk yourself out of it. Another symptom of procrastination is that you allow things to stack up. This might be because you don’t really want to do those things in the first place. Rather than delegating it to someone else, or simply 28 July 2013 | SASSY

deciding whether or not it really needs to be done, you let it sit. You feel guilty for not doing it, and yet the list of things you haven’t completed rises until one day, you dig into it and make it go away. Remember how that feels once you’ve done the stuff you’ve been avoiding? Just because you’ve identified yourself as a “procrastinator” doesn’t mean you are sentenced to be one for life. At any moment, you can choose to be something else. Why not start now? Start doing the thing that you’ve been procrastinating first thing each morning. You’ll be shocked at the powerful feeling that comes over you when you deny your supposed personality the power to stop you from doing what’s important in your life.

Q:

I ’m 42 years old, and have had some compelling life experiences, including cancer, divorce, and career challenges. I’m coming out the other side of these challenges, stronger and wiser. I think I have something to teach people based on these experiences. I have an idea for a book to write, and have no idea how to begin. It feels overwhelming. What should I do to get started?

Charrise Says: Sharing your hard-earned insights with people

can be rewarding for you, while helping others who may be enduring similar challenges to not feel so alone. I’ve heard from many people over the years who say that they “have a book in them”. I believe everyone has the capacity to tell a compelling story, and the trick is simply to get clear about what you’re writing and then...to get started. It seems for many of us starting is the most challenging part. People

get convinced that they don’t know how to start, and therefore the book is never born. What a shame! So here’s the best way I know to get moving on writing your book:

1. Get a clear plan for what you want

readers to gain by reading it. What book would you like to read right now that is not yet written? Write one sentence that describes the specific impact your book will have on readers.

2. Decide what questions your readers

might have on the topic. This will apply to almost any non-fiction book. List the questions, in any order they come to you. Now, you have chapter headings! You can always rearrange the chapters, and having a direction for them will help you get started.

3. Don’t write a book, write a chapter.

It’s less intimidating and feels more manageable from a time standpoint.

4. Create a daily writing ritual. Don’t wait

for inspiration. Writing will inspire you! Create a ritual that you can commit to, and then stay in that commitment.

5. Decide how many words your book

will have, and count the words as you go. You can then measure your distance to a finished manuscript. Convert that number to a percentage and you’ll feel accomplished with each percentage point as it grows. Don’t listen to the voice of resistance that wants to dissuade you. Focus on the image of your hands, with your finished book in them.

tomato

By: Chaunie Marie Brusie

& BASIL bruchetta

I love this simple bruchetta recipe because it’s easy to make and elegant for entertaining. Plus, it’s the perfect way to use up all of those end-of-the-summer garden tomatoes!

Ingredients

Directions

• Grape tomatoes, halved (or diced tomatoes)

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut the loaf of French bread into equal slices and brush both sides with olive oil. Place a generous helping of crumbled Feta cheese and tomatoes on each slide and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the bread is golden and crusty and the cheese is slightly melted. Transfer the slices to a serving platter and drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle with minced basil leaves.

• Feta cheese (crumbled) • One loaf of French bread • Olive oil for brushing • Fresh basil (minced) • Balsamic vingear

4 Big Win Twitter Is a

Reasons

Small Business

for

By Jillian Koeneman

Businesses both large and small have a lot to gain by connecting on Twitter. Companies of all shapes and sizes can utilize this 140 character communication tool for things like customer service, lead generation, public relations, marketing, sales, sharing unique stories and helping to position the company as an industry authority. #bizinaction

The number of small businesses actively using Twitter has grown substantially in the recent years, making it the second largest social network in the U.S. behind the social media giant Facebook. In fact, according to Search Engine People’s “Twitter Marketing for Small Businesses,” 70% of small businesses are on Twitter. So, is your company on Twitter? If the answer is, great job! You have a leg up on your competition and with each tweet, you are building loyal brand advocates and future customers. If you aren’t on Twitter, let me guess—you think it’s a waste of time? Or, perhaps you think your business is just too small? Or, maybe you think your customers could care less? Or, maybe you just don’t know where to start?

34 SEPTEMBER 2013 | SASSY

If you can tough it out through the learning curve (if not, hire a social media pro) and be open to a new way of communicating, you will find that there are huge benefits to your business. Check out these four reasons why Twitter can be a big win for your small business: 1. Twitter users are 5x more likely to share stories on their profiles than Facebook users. Word-of-mouth is incredibly powerful. Socialnomics found that 90% of people trust online recommendations from their peers, whereas only 14% of people trust advertisements. If you can get other people talking about your product or service on your behalf—well, then that is where the true magic happens. Because more sharing takes place on Twitter than on Facebook, it’s a wise choice to use Twitter to boost your word-of-mouth and visibility.

2. Twitter’s fastest growing age demographic is 55 to 64 year olds. Throw that notion that Twitter is only for twenty-somethings out the window! Not only is Twitter the fastest growing social media tool, the fastest growing user is the baby boomer generation. Active usage grew 116% in this age group between in 2012, while Global Web Index found that active usage among 45 to 54-year-olds increased by only 81% in the same period.

Thank you...

Although baby boomers make up a large portion of the 40% of Twitter users who rarely post anything, they are still reading and consuming information, so it’s still very important to get your company in front of your target audience using this tool. 3. 34% of marketers have generated leads using Twitter. One of the greatest strengths of Twitter is its ability to connect companies with customers in their own backyard. Twitter’s advanced search functionality is incredibly intelligent and allows you to search for people geographically near your product or service. You can follow them or add them to a potential local customer list. It’s the first step to engaging them in conversation. 4. Twitter users are more likely to buy from the brands that they follow on Twitter. One of the main reasons people join Twitter is because they want to connect with the brands and companies they love! Search Engine People found that 67% of Twitter users are more likely to buy from brands they follow on Twitter because of the connection and comfort level they feel with them by engaging with them via social media. Customers want to buy from businesses they like, know and trust. Use Twitter to help potential customers get to know you. If these four reasons are not enough to get you itching to jump into the Twitterverse, there are millions more. Simply do a Google search for “Twitter for Small Business” and you’ll find hundreds of articles and case studies that point to small business success via Twitter. As for me, I’m going to get back to Tweeting and building my business. If you want to connect, Tweet me at @JillianMK!

Literary Your

Horoscope

Turn a Page, Change Your Mood By Jennifer Warfel Juszkiewicz

W

hen I was a child, I loved to read and be read to by others. It’s no wonder that I now study English literature as my career. However, there are disadvantages to taking what you love and making it your life’s work. I now feel that I should be reading certain kinds of books: “classics” for my career, professional development texts so I can be a better educator, current events magazines and newspapers so I can be a good citizen. I’m supposed to be too responsible to stay up all night reading a murder mystery, cheap romance, or comic book. Nonsense! Those books, the ones that I’m too grown-up to read or too educated to appreciate or too old to enjoy are the best books for me. And I argue that they can be the best books for anyone who feels claustrophobic or frustrated or just a bit bored.

In fact, my career was once saved by Little House on the Prairie. For a few months after my undergraduate program ended, I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. I was working a job that I hated. I tried to read books I usually enjoyed, but I couldn’t. I’d leave them scattered around the house, unfinished. I was snapping at my husband, ignoring my dogs and friends and just being surly for a few weeks. Then I went upstairs and pulled out my worn copies of Laura Ignalls Wilder’s Little House books. In particular, I read "These Happy Golden Years", the book set during the early years of Laura’s marriage, when her house and its beautiful pantry (how I’ve dreamed of that pantry) burn down, and she and Alonzo lose everything. I’d read the book dozens of times, but that moment was my watershed. First, it made me realize I needed to snap out of my funk, and it reminded me that I loved reading. Loved it. And I still do.

Just for fun, we’ve matched up your horoscope to predict what literary treasures lie waiting in your future:

Aquarius:

January 21 – February 19 Perhaps it’s because you spent the first months of your life in terrible weather, but Aquarians can be a bit cold and sarcastic on their bad days. Mr. Darcy must have been an Aquarius, but luckily, Elizabeth Bennet balances him out perfectly. While this isn’t a guilty pleasure book, your straight-laced temperament might be better suited to some classic Jane Austen anyway. Pick up Pride and Prejudice at the first opportunity.

Pisces:

February 20 – March 20 You need to get up and get moving! There’s no one who’s quite as proactive as Sam Gribley in My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead. Besides, your escapist tendencies will be charmed by his running away from the cramped New York City to live in a tree in the woods. He trains a hawk, builds a house and just revels in being free and comfortable in his own skin.

Aries:

March 21 – April 19 Since we’re trying to get you out of a funk, and Aries funks often involve moodiness and self-involvement, consider reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This classic children’s tale about a morose, rotten little girl who finds hope and life in a walled garden has more depth than we realized when we read it as children. Plus, if you tend to lock yourself away in a dark room when you’re grumpy, this may inspire you to step out into the autumn sunlight.

Taurus:

April 20 – May 20 In your rotten moods, you become stubborn, lazy and materialistic (so say horoscope sites, anyway). Counteract that with a dash of Lord Peter Wimsey, the lead detective in Dorothy Sayers’ wonderful novels. In particular, try Strong Poison, which is also satisfyingly romantic. Wimsey is an aristocratic charmer of the erudite variety, and Harriet Vane, his skeptical beloved, should suit your personality perfectly. These novels may start a bit slow, but give them a chance and you will also find yourself falling in love with the darling Lord Peter.

Gemini:

May 21 – June 20 Indecision and restlessness mark your dark days, so let’s see if a dose of nonsense can straighten you out: Lewis Carroll is your man. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland begins with a line that may very well capture your present mood: “Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do.” Pick up Martin Gardner’s The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition, with its lovely embossed cover and period illustrations. Then, when you have escaped your own glum rabbit hole, have a tea party with friends, watching the Disney, Tom Petty, and Tim Burton versions. That will certainly give you something to do.

Cancer:

June 21 – July 22

Oh, woe is me! Cancers tend toward oversensitivity and self-absorption, but let’s snap out of it. If there’s one character who isn’t oversensitive or self-absorbed, it’s Winnie-the-Pooh. Yes, you heard me right. I want you to read A.A. Milne. I don’t care how old you are; he will brighten your day and soothe your soul. And if you choose one of the lovely box sets with the original illustrations, their simplicity and beauty will be an added bonus. After all, as Milne writes, “You can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” So go to the bookshelf and find them.

Leo:

July 23 – August 22 Since pretentiousness and melodrama tend to be Leos prime weaknesses, let’s counteract them with Where the Lilies Bloom, by Vera and Bill Cleaver. This survival story about a teenager determined to keep her young siblings safe is both a reminder of the plenty of our land and the plight of young people everywhere. It’s also a story about the difference between pride and vanity (another Leo weakness).

Virgo:

August 23 – September 22 For a group that tends to be so analytical and reliable, it’s a sad day when Virgos become inflexible and skeptical. Let’s bring some magic and whimsy back into your life with C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. The child-like language, nation that there’s adventure in every cupboard and overriding sense of faith and hope may be just what you need to get back on track.

Libra:

September 23 – October 22 Well, it’s nearly your birthday, so the timing is perfect to splurge on a beautiful book. Choose one that will knock you out of any bad Libra habits of indecision. In fact, pick up Richard Adams’ Watership Down illustrated by Aldo Galli. I’m a firm believer that beautiful books can only be made better if illustrated by talented people. This adventure story of the rabbit Hazel and his fellows is one of courage and decisiveness in the face of danger. It’s long, so settle in with some hot cider and cookies to enjoy it fully.

Scorpio:

October 23 – November 21 You need a book that will help you let go of all the jealousy and obsessiveness that tend to plague Scorpios. The best book I’ve read recently about letting go is The Fault in our Stars by John Greene. I cried through the last hour of reading and felt entirely cleansed, with my perspective realigned and my sense of self-importance dashed. Plus, Greene is a Hoosier, and this story of teenagers battling cancer is his greatest work thus far.

Sagittarius:

November 23 – December 22 Let me say, fellow centaurs, being unemotional and independent will only get us so far. Sometimes, we need to remember to go out and have some fun… after we’ve read a good book, of course. The one I’ve planned for my next rainy, moody day is one of J.K. Rowling’s first four Harry Potter novels (before they become too dark to help our mood). Harry just keeps trying to take care of everything, but his friends keep jumping back in to help, darn it! Since we have a tendency toward the “I’ll do it myself” mode, he’s the perfect example of why it’s helpful to rely on others sometimes.

Capricorn:

December 23 – January 20 With the sign of a goat, it’s no wonder that Capricorns tend to be bossy and somewhat unimaginative. The most imaginative writer, with the most magical of illustrations, is one who uses hardly any words: Shaun Tan. Tan’s collection The Lost Thing actually includes three short stories. At their simplest, “The Red Tree” is about depression; “The Lost Thing” is about love (animated in 2011, and recipient of an Academy Award); and “The Rabbits” is about loss. Combined, these three vibrant stories will snap you back into your world with a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation.

Monica Abair MBA, US Business Systems. Monica Abair, MBA is currently employed at US Business Systems, Inc.(USBS) headquartered in Elkhart IN as Director of Finance and Administration. USBS sells Information Technology products and services, focusing on managed document and print services to automate workflow and create efficiencies tailored to meet the specific needs of business. In addition to Monica’s employment she is currently Secretary/Treasurer for USBS, President Elect/ Director of Technology for Women Business Owners of Michiana (WBOM), serves on the Board of Directors for the YWCA of St. Joseph County and is also a Women of Vision for the YWCA because she believes in women helping women.

Answer: I believe that women should dress for success. In saying this I believe that the attire must be neat, clean and appropriate for the business environment in which they work. For example, salon attire versus office attire, one business is more relaxed, whereas the other is strict or refined. In any instance, there should always be written guidelines for various businesses that are communicated to the employee by the immediate supervisor (or HR) and also included in the handbook. Consistent guidelines for dress at the workplace will also reduce unfair practices.

38 SEPTEMBER 2013 | SASSY

Standard guidelines can be as simple as: 1. Obey the rules – whether you like them or not. 2. Never show your midriff. 3. Avoid revealing too much cleavage. 4. Keep your straps under wires. 5. Don’t wear anything see-through. 6. Keep your hemlines in check – 2 inches above the knee. 7. Save your flip flops for the beach. 8. Try not to go too tight. 9. Don’t get too eccentric – over-the-top makeup, crazy hats, sunglasses, etc. 10. Keep tattoos covered and limit the number of visible piercings.

The same can also be said for men, with minor adjustments of course. When communicating the guidelines let employees know that corrective actions will be taken if dress guidelines are not met; for example, leaving the premises to change clothing will not be compensated for any work time missed because of failure to comply with dress standards. Remember, dress at the workplace affects the overall impressions and environment, both internally with co-workers and externally with clients and suppliers. Assess your company’s image and current issues with dress to determine potential changes you may want to implement. First impressions do count.

SUSAN SAKARA Owner, Lipstick Jungle & Salon. Susan Sakara is the owner of Lipstick Jungle Spa and Salon in Niles, in business for over 10 years. Lipstick Jungle Spa and Salon is the only full service spa and salon where "spa" takes the lead—it’s truly a "hidden gem

Answer:

Dress code and enforcement has become a very big issue in the past few years. My industry, traditionally, has a wide variety of dress. It has always been fashionable and trendy, but has now gone to border on inappropriate. Visual tattoos, body branding and piercings seem like they are becoming the "norm". Maybe I am old-fashioned, but I just don't understand these forms of "self -expression" to be okay on one's face, neck or any highly visual place that can become a distraction in a professional work environment. The days of dressing up seem to be gone. It’s as though “dressing for success” is no longer taught anywhere. Your image is a reflection of your success and professionalism. It can dictate the client or customer opinion, and if they will use you for your services. Changing this mindset in an adult that has never been taught proper dress can be challenging. In my situation we went to uniforms. I gave employees guidelines and let them choose a style they all would agree on, and be appropriate for all body types. Even though I met with some resistance, they are now very glad to not have to decide on a wardrobe each morning or spend additional money on "work" clothes. The best compliment was when our clients commented on how professional everyone looks. Enforcing this dress code has been fairly easy. New people are told about it during the initial interview, so if this is something they can’t live with, then they know upfront. In addition, everyone has a different perception of a stated dress code. So I find it necessary to have pictures on a wall in the employee break room, as well as in the employee handbook. When all the bases are covered, there is less chance of confrontation. If, for some reason a person is not dressed within the guidelines, I give them one warning and then the next time they are sent home. That can create some difficulties, but we work around it and it usually doesn’t happen again. What your employees look like is a reflection of you, and if you don’t set the standards and enforce them consistently, then your business may pay the price.

To date, 39 brave and valiant gentlemen in our community have donned kilts to raise money for the nearly 2,000 families of ill and injured children who have used the Family Room. Individuality. Strength. Unabashed boldness in the face of conventionality. These are the standards to which a man wearing a KILT holds himself. It takes a winner to enter into battle such as this, but only one man can claim this year’s title: “KING of the KILTS”! Is it a coincidence that the qualities found in a man who wears a kilt are the same that help raise funds for families? We don't think so! Don't forget to mark your calendars for this year's event on October 24th and vote now at MenInKilts.org to elect this year's king!

Centerpiece for event.

5th annual

Taste of the Gardens Elkhart Rotary's 5th annual Taste of the Gardens was held on Saturday, August 24. The gates opened at 11:00 with visitors waiting to get in, to see the variety of art, music and food offered at this year's fundraising event for Wellfield Botanic Gardens. As they entered the Gardens they were greeted by an array of artist’s tents, with participants from Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and over 15 cities in Indiana. A large variety of items were for sale including jewelry, paintings, clay, watercolor and sculptures, just to name a few from the 80 + artists in attendance. Attendees were able to sample the food from 15 of the area’s finest restaurants. Restaurants participating and donating 100% of their proceeds back to the Gardens included: 523 Tap & Grill, Christiana Creek Country Club, Dickie's at Swan Lake, Between the Buns, Chubby Trout, Flippin' Cow, McCarthy's on the Riverwalk, Texas Roadhouse, Great Wall, Mod Mex and Rolling Scones. This year a special area was set-up for those with a sweet tooth as restaurants such as Honey's Frozen Yogurt, Bonnie Doon, b on the River and SugaRush satisfied their appetites.

Brent Brown has attended the Gardens exhibiting his works for the past 4 years. He enjoys sharing his talent with others as they ask about the type of wood used on various art pieces.

As individuals strolled through the Gardens they could hear the sounds of various musical performers during the day, including Michael Kelsey, Night Shift, The Whistle Pigs, VibeNation, Laura and Vinny of Cousin Vinny, Rafel Chaves y Moreno, Paul Decker and the Real Deal, along with Elkhart Symphony. Of course the star of the event remained the Botanic Gardens themselves with new gardens and sculptures added since last year’s event. Guests were surprised by the low admission price of $5, with children 12 and under getting in free. Taste of the Gardens is an Elkhart Rotary fundraising event to help fund the maintenance and growth of the Wellfield Botanic Gardens. The Gardens receives no financial support through government or city funds. Over 5,000 attended the 2013 event with approximately $100,000 raised through sponsorships, entrance fees and donations from restaurants. Mark your calendar to attend the event next year when the event will once again be on the 4th Saturday in August, on August 23rd.
