pantyhose PHOBIA & Dilemma

I remember

5th grade. We had a field trip to Chicago. In my family, going into the city meant getting dressed up; especially when the agenda included a stop at the theater. Being the “appropriate” child that I was, I dressed up. I decided the best outfit would be a wool plaid skirt, white blouse, corduroy blazer (with elbow pockets), wedges and yes…panty hose. My memories of that day faded until a photo of the trip appeared on Facebook (please don’t look for it!). Funny how time has a way of shifting memories from what play I saw and what museum we went visited to memories of my feet killing me, trying to not get my cool outfit messed up and worrying I would snag my panty hose.

Yes, I was THAT kid.

Thankfully, gratefully and blessedly today’s fashion does not dictate the wearing of panty hose. I ask you, who DOES wear panty hose these days? Well, other than my mother… Don’t misunderstand my angst with panty hose. There is a definite difference between panty hose and tights. Don’t confuse the two. I am not talking tights here. I love tights. Bring on the pattern in lovely opaque hues! I’m talking panty hose; those nude or sheer leg coverings that we agree were invented by an unfashionable man in an effort to torture women.

The debate seems to be how to don our bare-leggedness when the temps fall below 50 degrees. Style monikers agree there are a few secrets to comfortably and fashionably wear bare legs and not turn blue. This seems to be a hot topic among fashion bloggers; even the Huffington Post had a piece about the annoyance of one reporter seeing bare legs in the winter. All kidding aside, there may be a time and place for panty hose, along with some simple things to keep in mind when you are going barelegged in the winter.

When talking to a fellow fashionista about this very topic, she admitted when she goes bare-legged, she wears compression garments. If you’ve ever worn one of those magical garments, you know they have a tendency to be a little, well, warm. The bare legs can help you to keep your cool.

A runway tip I’ve kept a secret for a long time is leg sheen. Typically this is a tip I only share with clients that walk the red carpet at award shows, ya know, because of all the cameras. I am shocked I’m sharing it with you…but hey, we’re all friends, right? A leg sheen or illuminizer down the front of your legs give your legs the appearance of tone and color (without tanning).

Many lotions have a bit of sheen to them (call it sparkle), that is what I am referring to. Be sure to just use this down the FRONT of your leg, not all over.

LEG MAKEUP

Winter means your skin becomes dry. The more you expose your skin to the elements, the more drying you will see. Be sure to employ an exfoliating and moisturizing routing into your beauty regime if your plan is go to bare-legged this winter.

Honestly, panty hose are not going to keep you warm. Period. The reason to wear them has more to do with covering your legs or adding some color to those gams that haven’t seen sunlight in months. Look for a moisturizer with a hint of sunless tanner. Or try a leg makeup product. I prefer the spray on variety. Try Sally Hanson Salon Air Brush Legs. St. Tropez is also a favorite brand among makeup artists and stylists.

BARELY THERE

Women who are ‘all about fashion’ probably won’t seek out panty hose that nude or sheer. Before you throw back your hair and roll your eyes, let me tell you Kate Middleton wears (wait for it) yes, PANTY HOSE! I advise against going to a colored sheer panty hose (ala the 80’s). Keep the panty hose wearing to two hues: nude or black…and wear black with caution.

SEASONALLY APPROPIRATE

One of my fashion pet peeves is seeing stylish gals not dressed for the season. Linen in winter, wool in the summer. Makes my skin crawl. When going bare-legged, the rest of your outfit needs to be seasonally appropriate.

Closed-toed shoes and fabrics that were made for cold weather are a good start. In addition to knee-high boots, try an ankle boot or oxford style heel.

GYM SOCKS

Confession: in the winter when I wear my fave riding boots (and bare legs), I wear gym socks. Yes, I need to be sure my feet are warm or I am miserable.

ACCESSORIZE

If you simply can’t get your head around going bare-legged on cold days, consider making your ‘leg covering’ an accessory. Try something textured, look into more tights than panty hose or maybe start with a cute kneesock/tall riding boot look first?

ADORN YOUR OUTFIT

If you are going to be bare-legged, but don’t want all the attention on your gams, make the rest of your outfit attention worthy. A patterned skirt, a great statement coat or maybe gobs of sparkly jewelry will bring attention away from your legs.

OWN THE LOOK

It is true going bare-legged in winter months will bring some attention your way. As I always say with any style or trend, if your love it, OWN IT! Most of your style comes from within; from your inner beauty and confidence. If you try this look and just aren’t sure if it is for you, that can affect your confidence.  SASSY | december 2013

The neighbors are winning...

There they are. Across the street. Those are my neighbors. Good grief, could they BE more perfect? Their angelic presence and sophisticated decorating style makes me crazy jealous of them. Especially during the holidays. That's when they pull out all the stops. And even though I have no business participating in this war they know nothing about because it all takes place in my head, I still try to win.

So far it isn't looking good for me.

For example, today as I was vacuuming the dust off of my old plastic Christmas tree, I noticed them decorating their freshly cut, 20-foot Scotch Pine. Why can't they just shut 12 december 2013 | SASSY

their front curtains so I don't have to see these things! Yet I didn’t have time to glare at them for long because the synthetic needles I was sucking up started melting inside my Dyson.

Before the carcinogenic fumes overtook me, I flung my vacuum out the front door. Happily, this allowed me a much better vantage point from which to covet their glorious conifer.

Boy, was it a beauty! I could almost make out a nest of turtle doves snuggled deep within its boughs, and, knowing these people, I bet there are also three precocious singing chipmunks hiding in there too.

As darkness fell, I plugged in my tree impersonator and admired the millions of blinking, multi-colored lights. What a sight to behold. Until it wasn't. You see, I was suddenly distracted by the magical radiance coming from THEIR house. Was that the faint sound of angels gently weeping I heard, or

was that just me? *Sniffle* Either way, their living room looked like something out of a super fancy department store window. And that tree! Delicate white lights glistening amid the perfectly placed, monochromatic Christmas balls. All accented by a strand of fresh cranberries woven whimsically through the branches. And the star on top? Well that was the Pièce de résistance. As I moved closer, entirely mesmerized by the tranquil visage before me, I heard a commotion coming from the direction of my house. Turns out my rapidly blinking rainbow lights caused Mr. Gustafson to have a seizure in my driveway.

By the time the paramedics arrived, the entire neighborhood was camped out on my front lawn. It was here where my nemesis invited me over for a mug of hot cocoa. (I told you she was flawless.) Faster than a flying reindeer, I said yes to her invitation because

this, quite possibly, might be my only chance to see inside that miracle manse of hers. Let me tell ya', it did NOT disappoint.

From the hand-embroidered velvet stockings hung on the mantle, to the crackling fire, to the intoxicating smell of Yankee candles mixed with fresh pine—this is what Heaven wants to be like. Even her little dog was fashionable—all decked out in his custommade herringbone sweater. The sweater that was WAAAYY nicer than any one I owned.

Yup, I was now jealous of Mr. Barkington the Third. A freakin' Beagle! What had I become?

After an hour of polite conversation I had to admit she was, indeed, lovely. In fact, by the time I left I actually couldn't even force myself to hate her anymore. That would be like hating candy canes and cinnamon.

Therefore, I raised the white flag in this, my delusional war, and surrendered. I mean, how could I compete with this woman anyway? She was astounding! So I decided to turn it all around and start looking at her as an inspiration. Like Pinterest; but alive. And maybe, just maybe, I could make my own home more Christmassy? Consequently, I went straight to work.

To cover up the burnt plastic odor, I sprinkled half a bottle of Pine Sol onto my living room carpet. Hello fresh tree smell!

Sure, not a Yankee candle, but hey...I also put those LED faux candles in each bedroom window before I immediately took them down. The intense brightness focused far too much attention on my dirty panes. After that I assaulted the front yard. I chucked one of those lighted blanket webs over a shrub and even wrestled a string of lights onto our dead tree. Even though it's now painfully obvious where I threw my arms up in defeat, (branch #2) it still didn't look entirely offensive. And so what if I'm not an awesome decorator like my neighbor anyways? I bet there are things I do that make her jealous.

I have no idea what they could possibly be, but I suppose it is entirely possible. So for now I'll just admire her lovely home from over here. Here in my dark living room.

A bottle of Champagne has 56 million bubbles in it, give or take a few.

What is the one wine that is used in celebrations all over the world?

That’s right—it’s Champagne!

When a couple gets married or has a baby or when your husband or partner lands a new job, the best thing to do is to pop some bubbly. Nothing says, “it’s time to celebrate” better than champagne. It has a celebratory status and that status is dazzlingly powerful.

What’s in a glass?

Champagne isn’t just used as the top choice for celebration, but for pleasure as well. More than any other wine, Champagne uncorks pure, sophisticated joy. According to Marilyn Monroe’s biographer, she once bathed in 350 bottles of Champagne. She is said to have lived and breathed it like oxygen. And Brigitte Bardot is quoted as saying, “Champagne is the one thing that gives me zest when I feel tired”. Legend has it that Dom Pierre Perignon, a Benedictine monk, invented Champagne; however most experts agree that Dom Perignon did not invent Champagne but was important in its development.

Breaking down the bubbly

True Champagne comes from the region in France called Champagne and may only be made from three grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The characteristics of 14 december 2013 | SASSY

each grape play a great role in the complexity of the Champagne itself. Chardonnay brings the finesse and elegance whereas Pinot Noir brings the body, texture and aroma. And finally, Pinot Meunier, the least important grape in the process, contributes to the fruitiness and the earthiness.

The process of making Champagne begins with the harvest and because two of the three grapes used in making it are red, they must be harvested tenderly by hand so that the juice doesn’t pick up reddish highlights or tannic coarseness from the skins. Next, come the bubbles. Interestingly, a bottle of Champagne has 56 million bubbles in it, give or take a few. The bubbles are created in a second fermentation by the wine maker taking still wine or non-sparkling wine and adding a few grams of sugar and a few grams of yeast. This sugar and yeast convert to carbon dioxide (bubbles) and of course, alcohol.

This conversion causes millions of bubbles to become trapped in a very small space. The second fermentation usually happens in the bottle, but some winemakers will do it in the fermentation tanks. And the rule of thumb for Champagne is that the smaller the bubble, the finer the wine.

A sweet treat

There are six sweetness levels of Champagne, which range from most dry to the sweetest: Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Sec, Demi-Sec

and Doux. Most Champagnes produced now are Bruts. Brut Champagnes drink best as an appetizer wine or with a meal. Champagne that is slightly sweet, like an Extra Dry, drinks better after a meal. Moet & Chandon’s popular White Star Champagne is not brut but extradry. Demi-sec Champagnes are wonderful with desserts, especially fruit desserts. Veuve Clicquot, Moet & Chandon and Mumm are the top three for dry and demi-sec Champagnes.

Good times ahead

Don’t be afraid to open our friend Champagne; the best way to open it is to tip it away from you, unwind the wire six times to the left and remove the wire. Then, pop the cork with your thumbs slowly. The best way to serve Champagne is chilled and in a flute or in a tulip glass. When Champagne is poured into either glass, the carbon dioxide gas dissolved in the liquid rubs against the glass and the friction causes the gas to burst into bubbles. These styles of glasses encourage long beaded lines of tiny bubbles, which are lovely to look at.

Where the saucer-shaped Champagne glass called a “coupe” comes from is quite a story— it is said that the shape of the glass itself was formed from a mold of the breast of Marie Antoinette herself. Most think it’s terrible for Champagne due to the bubbles flittering away too quickly and the fact that it warms up quickly in the drinker’s hand.

A sparkling option

If you aren’t feeling confident enough to buy that bottle of Champagne, go for the other bubbly wine option, which is just as festive, and choose a sparkling wine.

There are many to choose from and many regions have their own sparklers. Spain has a sparkling wine called Cava, named after the way it was stored in dugout cave in the ground. Italy has Asti’s and Moscato D’ Asti and Prosecco. Moscato D’ Asti is a light and fruity wine that is less effervescent than its cousin Asti. And since it’s under less pressure, it’s not corked with a Champagne cork and wire, but simply a normal cork. It is also a tradition to drink it on Christmas Day. The United States boasts a lovely selection of its own sparklers from state to state as well.

So no matter how you celebrate your Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays, toast your guests with a flute of bubbly in hand and remember the past year with a joy that can continue into the year to come. Cheers! 

Q:

My question is how do I actually accomplish the things I want to get done? I find that I have lots of ideas for doing things that would advance my career, and zero motivation to get moving on it. Maybe I don’t really believe I’m capable?

Charrise Says:

You will only ever do what you believe you are capable of doing. Your job is to explore your belief system, scanning for those long-held limiting beliefs and choosing to dismantle them. We tend to only believe we can do what we’ve already done. It’s not the truth—as evidenced by the world around you where people are moving their careers forward all of the time.

At the root of most inaction is your fear. Until you gain an understanding of what you’re really afraid of, fear has the capacity to stop you in your tracks.

Figuring that out will serve you well. Whether it is fear of failure, fear of success or fear of being an imposter, knowing precisely what you’re afraid of can only help you to stop giving it all your power.

Once you’ve named your fear, it may help you to imagine that your worst fear has already happened. Are you still alive and breathing when you imagine yourself there? Can you survive it? What is the likelihood of that worst fear actually happening? Creating logic for it not actually being likely to happen, and knowing you can survive it if it does will also diminish its hold over you.

Next, get into action around your fear. Baby steps rock in this case. Doing something—even something that seems really small—will propel you into a positive direction. When you are in action, fear diminishes and even sometimes disappears.

Fear is the only thing that ever really stops anyone from anything. Harsh, and true. If you really want to advance your career (which is another chapter entirely), you need to get committed to figuring out why you’re not doing it. Exploring your fear is a great first step.

I’ve been running my own business for 2 years, doing everything myself. I realize I’m not always doing a task justice because I’m either in a hurry or I’m not good at it. For example, keeping track of receipts. They end up in a big pile because I don’t enjoy organizing and entering them. There is always something to do that seems more urgent. I feel this huge pressure to address those little details and get frustrated that I have to do things in my business that I don’t like doing. How do I make this transition between not really being able to afford outsourcing and getting the right things done to grow my business so that someday I will be able to hire someone?

Charrise Says:

This is always a tricky transition to make. One thing to consider is whether or not the things you are not doing (or not doing well) are costing you growth potential. It could be that if you didn’t spend time on the menial tasks, you would spend more time on revenue generating tasks.

If it’s a financial stretch to outsource, would choosing to make that stretch challenge you in a good way? For example, if you hired someone to do your bookkeeping, would that motivate you to create more revenue to pay for it? How would you spend that extra time and energy?

As your business grows, these kinds of decisions will become necessary. If you want your business to scale, there will come a time when you won’t be able to do it all. There is a tension between worrying about spending the money and the freedom you will experience by going for the next level. That includes hiring others to help you accomplish your goals. 

What to Buy the Single Guy In Your Life This Christmas By: David Palmer

Every Christmas, single men receive gifts from the committed women in their lives. And every Christmas, a slew of those gifts are returned because, for some reason or another, they just were not right.While husbands and boyfriends can be difficult to shop for in their own right, a single man can present a very unique challenge. This season, however, it doesn’t have to be that way. By following a few simple guidelines for shopping for the single man in your life, you can easily buy a gift this holiday season that he will not only enjoy, but will have good use for too!

Skip the essentials

While it might seem that buying the essential things in a man’s life—socks, cologne or hair products—would be a good go-to for Christmas gifts, it is usually a mistake. Single men are very likely to already have those types of essentials on hand because there is no one else in the their lives to purchase those things for them. What’s more, they are probably pretty brand specific. If a single man is loyal to a brand of product that he uses, buying a brand outside his tastes probably wouldn’t be something he’d have much use for. Matt Kalka, a single musician from South Bend, says, “My essential things—like shampoo and hair stuff—are like my guitars; I like what I like and that’s it. Other types and brands are cool, too, but I’ve got mine and that’s the way I keep it.”

Simple can be thoughtful, too

Good gifts don’t need to be complex to be thoughtful. If you know a little bit about the single guy you are shopping for and have even a slight insight into his interests, then taking a simple approach to shopping for him might be the best bet. Jason Bryant, a longtime photographer and single man from Elkhart, claims that his interest in photography can be the best or worst thing for gift ideas depending on the approach. “If my married sister or cousins are going to buy photography things for me, [I hope they] take it easy,” Jason says. “Don’t go crazy and try to buy me a new camera lens or something.” If you know the man and you know the basics, then that best gift award can be yours this season.

Say no to clothes

Buying clothes for a single man is a daunting task. Getting the right size is difficult. Getting the right style is a challenge. Buying the right size and the right style in one move can be downright impossible. So this year, stay away from clothing altogether. You might know the size he wore last year, but a lot can change in twelve months. Also, he may have found something new he is into or he may have tweaked his style choices. According to Amanda Lodyga, a South Bend native and assistant manager for a popular men’s clothing store, many of the gifts that women buy for men pre-Christmas are returned in the days after December 25th. “We sell tons of jeans and shirts and sweaters in the Christmas rush, but I’d say a majority of them come back as returns,” she says. “The women buy them and the men usually are the ones returning them.”

A little recon can go a long way this season.

Use what you notice the single guy is most involved with as a starting point for your gift-buying ideas. If the interests he mentions seem too vague to shop for, checking out some websites for Christmas gift ideas might be beneficial. Sites like Coolhunting.com and Engadget.com contain a plethora of good ideas that single men would probably like to have waiting for them under the tree this year. From practical to plain fun, tech to toys, men’s websites are a treasure chest of the things men desire and would appreciate as gifts from the married women in their lives.

Forgetting about presents for a moment, it is important to remember what the holiday season is really about: bringing joy and showing love to those around you.

Regardless of the items you choose to give to the ones you love this year, showing them that you care will inevitably be the best gift they will receive this Christmas.

I work from home full-time and struggle with not being seen as a professional in my field. What are some ways I can gain self-confidence and polish my professional image as a work-at-home employee?

I started working in my family-owned business right out of college.

At that time I had to overcome the label of “just the boss’s daughter”.

I worked extremely hard to prove myself. I focused my energies on demonstrating that I knew what I was doing in the bookkeeping and accounting fields and that I could make a difference in my role in the company. Since then I have become one of the owners, along with my two brothers, and I still have an image that I have to contend with. When my children were born, I struggled with the pull between being at work and being at home to raise my children. Being the VP of Administration allowed me to do much of my job from home. I made the decision to work from home when my children were very young, but with that decision came the image of an owner of the company that was not very engaged in the business. I had to figure out, again, how to repair the perception of my image.

What I came to realize was, even though I could do almost every aspect of my job from home, I missed out on the interactions with my employees and colleagues. I decided that just getting my job done was not going to be enough. Being the VP of Administration means I have a support role that my colleagues and employees rely on. I needed to show my level of engagement and commitment in the business had not changed just because I was not in the office. I decided that the biggest aspect that I needed to focus on was my availability to answer the questions and provide the solutions to problems as I always had, in the support role I was in. myself available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week via cell phone, emails and texting.

I continually let my employees and colleagues that even though I was not in the office, working from home meant that whenever they had a problem, issue or question I would be available to answer it as I always had back when I was working in the office. If that meant that I needed to take a call to answer an employee’s benefits question while I was changing my daughter’s diaper, I did. If that meant that I needed to call our prescription drug administrator to find out why an employee’s spouse was not able to fill a prescription while I was at a preschool Halloween party, I did it. Over time, my efforts paid off— even though I was not in the office and I was working from home, I was able to be there for my employees and colleagues whenever they had issues or questions. I prided myself on being able to meet the needs of my employees and colleagues regardless of my location.

That really went a long way in helping me be seen as a professional in my field. It made me feel like I was making a difference in the lives of people I worked with and that I was really being appreciated for my level of commitment.

Answer:

Working from home has become a fairly common practice for a lot of professionals. Whether you are an entrepreneur, solopreneur or simply work remotely for a business, having the option of working in a home office can be attractive and effective.

But often the advantages can be overshadowed by feelings of solidarity and the ensuing lack of affiliation may have negative consequences on our self-confidence or even our self-image. Often the messages we receive are what affirm our beliefs of our abilities and impact our confidence.

Without that type of interaction, a void can develop and we inadvertently start filling it in with our own messages – which are often not positive.

Here are five suggestions to boost confidence and image while maintaining a home work environment.

• Get out of the house when possible. Isolation is usually not healthy. Interacting with others is a great way to encourage ourselves to dress up a bit (when we look good – we feel good) and to re-connect with colleagues.

• Join a professional group. Or create a professional group of like-minded professionals that want to share ideas. Success often breeds success, so find individuals that are already doing well in their field that can mentor or assist you. You might also discover that you are the “Expert” and could assist someone else who is also struggling a bit.

• Take a class or attend a seminar or workshop. Learning a new skill or honing an existing one is a huge confidence builder.

Many seminars are offered at no cost and may provide an opportunity to not only discover innovative ideas, but can also serve as a networking opportunity.

• Volunteer to mentor or teach a class. There’s nothing that boosts the self-image more than knowing you are assisting someone else; as an added bonus, that positive feedback is one of the most affirming acts.

• Ask for advice from someone you know and trust if you are struggling. When you work alone, you don’t have the opportunity to ask for feedback in the way you would if you were at a company. Connection is vital with others when you are working alone, so don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Most people are generous and would be happy to assist.

Having the freedom and flexibility of working from home can be extremely rewarding. It is important to keep in mind that this is the new normal for many career professionals and by most accounts it is an enviable position to be in – so enjoy! 

As the Marketing Coordinator for Jones Obenchain, Jessica wears many hats. She handles daily accounting and bookkeeping transactions and technology-based projects, as well as creates marketing content and handles social media and the company’s website. She also works on the operational efficiency of the company. “I absolutely love the people that I get to work with,” gushes Jessica. “They are all a caring and talented bunch. More than that, I love my job because it is very diverse; I encounter something different everyday, and I am always still learning. I am a nerd in that I have a love for numbers and ‘balancing’ [in a way] that only people in accounting really understand, but I also love being able to solve people’s technology issues.”

Having it all

Jessica Garretson is the Marketing Coordinator for the law firm Jones Obenchain, LLP, a position that she has held for two years. Before joining Jones Obenchain, Jessica worked as the Operations Manager for a telecommunications company.

A dedicated employee It’s easy to see that Jessica is proud of the law firm where is she an employee. “Jones Obenchain is a law firm that has been open since 1906,” Jessica explains. “Several of the employees have worked here for over ten years with the longest celebrating 57 years. As you can imagine, working together for so long, everyone becomes more like a family than just a company. We have very skilled partners who cover almost every area of practice you could need legal assistance with and several that have a special interest in legal writing, which sets Jones Obenchain apart from other law firms.”

That family feeling includes Jessica as well. Jones Partner Brian Kubicki says, “It didn’t take Jones Obenchain long to recognize the value Jessica brings to the firm. A working mother of five, Jessica is no stranger to the struggles of balancing work and home. “As a woman, and a mother, I've faced obstacles mostly with time when needed by my children at the same time [I am] needed for work or wanting to be present for something for work,” Jessica recounts.

However, she also cites her children as one of her biggest inspirations to keep going. “I am inspired by my children, my family and friends to work my hardest and to my potential in hopes of achieving a higher-paying career to reward and support them as well,” she says.

Learning to listen

Jessica remembers the best piece of business advice that she has received from a consultant that she worked with, who told her, "You don't know, what you don't know."

“I took it as motivation and advice to be open to listen and learn,” says Jessica. “It is so very true and has stuck with me now throughout my career. If I ever think I know it all about a situation or know best, I try even harder to listen, because of the fact that ‘I don't know what I don't know,’ but I do know that I can definitely learn!”

Outside of work, Jessica maintains a passion for physical fitness and exercise and recently received her spinning instructor certification. I would be a sling-bank, round toe pump! Because that is the absolute style I love, it is me!

Sassy Facts About Jessica: Best piece of business advice?

My single best piece of advice for women would be to find a career that you are happy in or feel a sense of accomplishment with and don't settle for anything less!

Favorite candle scent: Fresh Cotton—love the "clean" smells.

My guilty pleasure would definitely be sweets! I eat a lot of them…

Favorite weekend style?

Cropped yoga pants, tank top/flowing yoga top.

Favorite quote: You have time for what you make time for. I know there are only 24 hours in a day, but what is most important to you, will get done if you plan it in!

Favorite book: “The 5 Love Languages.” What a great way to look at loving people and making them happy...I believe in it wholeheartedly!

I think staying organized, planning ahead and constantly revisiting and refocusing on goals, but at the same time having patience to take it day by day to reach those goals. Not always easy, but you can do it!

Although Wilma has only been working as the manager for b on The River for a few months, she is already making a difference. For instance, Wilma shares that just recently, a local businessman approached her to thank her for her hard work. “He shared that the food and service was the best it has ever been,” says Wilma proudly.

Prior to joining b on the River in August, Wilma worked for three years in the advertising department at the Elkhart Truth, handling major and national accounts. Preceding her advertising years, Wilma served as the credit and collection manager for over thirteen years at The Truth and as the credit and collection manager for 8 years at Shelter/Thunander Corporation.

A new start Wilma manages a team of 15 employees at b on The River, a charming café, bakery and gift shop that overlooks the Elkhart River. b on The River recently purchased SugaRush desserts, well known for creating unique edible art and amazing wedding and birthday cakes. Wilma led [the recent] merger beautifully, which is not a surprise as she came to b on the River with a wonderful business background. She also has welcomed lots of new customers thanks to many wonderful contacts from her years of community activities.”

A day in the life of this Sassy woman A typical workday for Wilma begins at 5:45 am, when she does boot camp for her workout. She is into work by 8:00 am, where she works on administrative functions in the morning, works the lunch rush to assist with orders or shoppers, followed by inventory, emails, calls or additional administrative duties. After her shift, she’s off to pick up her youngest son from practice or head off to one of his games.

In the community Wilma recently joined the 4H fair food drive committee and is a member of Women in Business, and past Goshen Chamber Ambassador and Elkhart Junior Women's Club member.

Wilma’s children are Ryan (28), Jake (25) and his lovely wife Chelsea and Drew, who is 13. Wilma has been married to Dale for 30 years and they reside in Elkhart. She is currently pursuing her degree in business. 

Obenchain, LLP Ultimately, though, Janet—who has dreamed about becoming an attorney since before she even entered kindergarten—finds her work very rewarding. “I like building relationships with my clients and their families. It’s rewarding to give my clients piece of mind when they know their estate plan has been completed and their family will be taken care of. In addition, when helping the family after a client passes away, I like making the process less burdensome by doing what I can during a very difficult time for them. It is a constant challenge because no client’s plan or estate is identical so there are new issues to address every time,” Janet explains.

An involved Sassy woman, Janet is active in her community, where she is a member and past president of The Junior League of South Bend, a member of the Women's Entrepreneurship Initiative Advisory Board at Saint Mary's College and director of the Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County. In 2009, Janet was named one of Michiana’s Forty under 40, an award which recognizes 40 area business and professional leaders who have achieved success before the age of 40. In 2012, she also received the YWCA of Northern Indiana Woman to Watch award.

Giving back to women Janet G. Horvath has been an attorney with Jones Obenchain, LLP for ten years and a Partner for the last five. Before joining the firm, Janet participated in the Walt Disney World College Program and interned in the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. Janet attended Saint Mary’s College and graduated with a Bachelors of Business in Administration with a marketing concentration. She also attended Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington, where she received her juris doctorate.

Janet also enjoys giving back and sharing the knowledge that she has learned over the years through her experience as a businesswoman. She was recently offered the opportunity to teach Business Law as an adjunct professor at Saint Mary's College and is really enjoying the satisfaction that giving back to others, especially women, brings. On starting her work as a professor, Janet says, “Knowing what an important part the four years I spent at Saint Mary's had in making me the person I am today, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to give back in some small way. And I have thoroughly enjoyed joining some of my past business professors as a colleague.”

Balancing act Doing the right thing As a lawyer, Janet has to work in sometimes challenging circumstances with her clients. She recounts a recent incident in which her high work ethic and morals were able to lead to a successful outcome. “I am representing an estate which involves a dispute among the family members and recently, the Indiana Court of Appeals decided the case in my client’s favor,” Janet explains. “In this case, the decision was more than just a ‘legal victory.’ The outcome was personally satisfying because the decision was fair and just.

And contrary to popular belief, what is fair and what is required under the law is not always the same thing. I was happy that it was here.”

Janet embodies all that makes up a Sassy woman, according to her friend Robyn Albert. “Janet is a planner and I think she has to be to balanced in everything in her life. She never gets worked up or stressed because she gives every aspect of her life equal time. Every woman and mother could learn something from her!” says Robyn.

Janet and her husband, Leon, live in Rolling Prairie with their two young children, Alexandar, who is 3 and 1/2, and Grant, who is 1. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and traveling. 

Hello Gorgeous! currently has 28 affiliates in eight states, with a goal to put two affiliates in each city of the United States, each providing one makeover each month—for a grand total of helping 1/2 million women a year.

Kim Becker is the Founder of Hello Gorgeous! of Hope, Inc. Kim has been a hairdresser for more than 25 years and was a salon manager and owner for 10 years.

Wearing many (gorgeous) hats Kim is the co-founder and president of the startup non-profit organization, Hello Gorgeous! Over the last 7 years, through her non-profit, Kim has become a business woman, fundraiser, event planner, educator, public speaker, author, public relations personnel and the face of Hello Gorgeous!

What she does Hello Gorgeous! provides complimentary, professional makeovers to women battling all cancers. The women are surprised with candy, flowers and a certificate. Their day begins with a red-carpet roll out and a big "Hello Gorgeous!" greeting; from there, they are treated to a day of beauty, including a manicure, a pedicure, a facial, a wig if needed and a brand-new outfit. Each woman’s special day ends in a big reveal party so that she can show off her new look. (Pssst…our very own Heather Bachman, Sassy’s September cover girl revealed her surprise Hello Gorgeous! makeover in this month’s issue on page 51!)

Transforming lives In addition to serving as the founder and owner of Hello Gorgeous! Kim is happy to work as one of the hairstylists that perform services on the women with cancer. Kim loves seeing the transformation that the women battling cancer go through with their makeovers. “[I love] watching the transformations happen in such a short time; physically and emotionally,” says Kim. “Hearing their stories of inspiration, what they have conquered and having them come back in two and three years later to tell us what a turning point their Hello Gorgeous! experience was in their life.”

True beauty And if it isn’t apparent already, we want to make it clear that Kim is one of those fabulously Sassy women who are truly beautiful inside and out. As one nominator describes her, “Kim lives by example and gives with such a peaceful heart! Kim is always seeking ways to be better and she has the best attitude to overcome hard times in life. I had the opportunity to speak with Millard Fuller, founder and president of Habitat For Humanity, Inc. I asked him, "How much money do I need have to start serving these women? How much money should I have in the bank?"

Millard, always being the visionary and risk-taker he was, said something to me I would never forget. "Well, you would be really silly to start without a dollar. Kim, these women just want to be taken care of and they don't care if it’s in a palace or in an alley over a trash can. Just take care of the women." So, I do.

A career that chose her

Sharie graduated from Cosmetology College in Port Huron Michigan in 1986. She is certified in Hair Replacement by New Concepts Hair Goods, Inc. and American Board Certified in Orthotics and Prosthetics and Mastectomy Fittings. Her studio is also an American Board Certified Facility.

SHARIE CONARD Owner, Studio One

Sharie believes that she didn’t choose her career—it chose her. “I always wanted to be a cosmetologist as long as I can remember. Helping women with real issues in life seemed to find me wherever I was. In this case it was hair loss due to accidents, alopecia or medically-related. Traveling to New York, for the cutting edge of technology to bring back for my clients expanded in more ways than I could ever imagine.

Each time, I grew into another area of need for women of today. With twenty-four years of owning my own business behind me, each year still brings on new challenges as well as new goals.”

Sharie Conard is the owner of Studio One, a boutique dedicated to “Women Supporting Women.” Studio One specializes in caring for the physical and emotional health of women during and following cancer treatments. They work with women to supply hair and breast prosthesis. Studio One is also a partner with Hello Gorgeous!, working to surprise women undergoing cancer treatments with a head-to-toe makeover and surprise reveal party. .

Loving women “We are women supporting women here at Studio1,” explains Sharie. “When you hear the words you have cancer, at that point you hear nothing else. Shock sets in and you are trying to clarify all you have heard so far. The next step [for women] is to tell their story because they all have one. In God’s word it says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. With this said we have the opportunity to hear each woman’s story from her heart—each unique in its own way, feelings all over the place, choices she has to make almost immediately and treatment starts tomorrow. Ladies feeling overwhelmed just need someone to hear their story, this helps them hear and put things in perspective. Women are wonderful and their stories are all unique not one is ever the same. Loving my job is loving people, what could be better than that?”

“Many years ago, I had a friend who passed away from bone cancer,” Sharie explains. “Cheryl and I did everything together. We raised our children together, exercised together, did everything that you would do with a friend. After Cheryl became sick, I called her up one day and asked if I could come do her hair. She replied to me, "Sharie, I don't have any hair!" As a result, she stopped going anywhere, choosing instead to remain in the privacy of her house. And she did so until the day that she died. It was then that my heart took over. It told me that no one should ever endure that. It made me change my business from a full service hair salon, to a special needs boutique offering custom-fitted medical wigs and a full line of apparel for Mastectomy, Lumpectomy, Reconstruction and Lymphedema patients. As much as it breaks my heart knowing what Cheryl went through in her last days, I am encouraged in knowing that today, there is that "special place" for women like her and that none of them will ever have to endure what she did.”

A Family Business

“As a business owner, I've learned that if you want your business to run smoothly when you are not there, then you need to duplicate yourself,” Sharie comments. “Since we are a family owned business and I have all three of my daughters (and even a granddaughter) working with me, that is exactly what has happened. The process of teaching, training, mentoring and releasing them has been very rewarding. Now, watching them serve the community with the same love and passion that I have makes me a very proud mother as well as business owner.”

And part of the team is Sharie herself, who goes above and beyond to ensure that all of the women she works with receive the very best. “Sharie goes above and beyond regular business hours and never has a negative thing to say about anyone. She always tries to see the best in everyone. She volunteers her time whenever and wherever asked. Even if she didn't have time, she would make time. She is just the best,” says Brenda Leja.

The reason that Sharie works so hard? She knows the impact that her work is making on women. “When the ladies we help come in to tell us that all their tests are negative and they are cancer free...we all cry and celebrate together,” Sharie says. “They then say, ‘I just had to tell someone the good news and since you have been walking this journey with me I knew you'd want to know.’”

Sharie’s oldest daughter, Lori, is the store manager at Studio I. She also has a son, Michael, who is 35 and her youngest daughter, Trisha, 33, serves as the store’s assistant manager. Sharie and her husband also have 12 wonderful grandchildren ranging from 3-year-old twins up to the oldest at 16. Sharie has been married to her husband Michael for 37 wonderful years and the couple resides in Bridgman, MI.

Not Just a Pretty Face Sharie boasts an impressive array of achievements, both in her personal and professional life. In 1998, Sharie was crowned Mrs. Southwest Michigan, a title that opened the door to her ministry as a Gospel singer and motivational speaker. “There are a lot of hurting people out there,” Sharie says. “When I am asked to speak or sing, I understand what an honor it is to be able to inspire others at their time of need. As a Gospel singer, I realize that a song feeds the soul. My very first recorded album was titled ‘Reaching Others With Love.’ It was dedicated to any individuals whose lives have been touched by cancer in any way.” Sharie is also a part of The Women's Task Force - Secret Sisters Society, Hello Gorgeous! and the USAGEM (United States Association of Gospel Entertainers and Musicians) in Nashville, TN, which voted her Female Gospel Vocalist of the Year in both 2005 and 2006. 

Sassy Facts About SHARIE: What’s your guilty pleasure? Just sitting and doing nothing (with my coffee and French Vanilla creamer).

What did you want to be as a child growing up? A hairdresser, helping people look good and feel better about themselves.

Favorite book? The one that holds all of the answers – The Bible!

What does success mean to you? Being able to be true to who I am, having a husband who loves and supports me, being able to work with a family that I love and being able to make a difference in the lives we touch and the communities we serve.

What’s your best secret to “having it all?” Balancing time.

There is actually time for everything, you just need to balance it. Since you can't retrieve time, then there is no time to waste.

Favorite form of stress relief? Family is a gift from God, so spending the weekend with all of my grandchildren—swimming in the pool, cooking, tea parties, walking or biking.

They grow way too fast! This is my family and they are my stress relief.

How do you stay organized? I stay organized by staying ahead of the game. Prior preparation is the key.

What’s your go-to in-office style? Always some sort of a heel, tastefully simple and with all of the accessories.

Favorite weekend style? Jeans, soft fleece and cuddling with my husband.

What’s your best advice for women in business? There are two ways to live. You can live as if nothing is a miracle, or you can live as if everything is a miracle. If you choose the latter, then you will always be appreciative of the things that God has blessed you with.

Describe your typical workday: I start my day by thanking God for giving me the opportunity to breathe one more day.

Then I'm off to the shop, checking on appointments, emails, doing some promotional marketing, placing or checking on orders and shipments and occasional meetings. After the last client has left for the day, it's home to get into my workout clothes for a walk to the beach and back with a friend. I end my workday by thanking God for my blessed day and for all of the people He allowed me to help.

Christine Griggs-Huppert has worked as the Service Center Manager at the Teachers Credit Union in Mishawaka, the largest credit union in the state of Indiana, for over 27 years. Christine assumed her position as Manager at the Credit Union after serving as Assistant Manger for only six months.

Although Christine admits that she was “scared” when she was first asked to manage her branch, advice from Dale Strzelecki, the Assistant Vice President for the Teachers Credit Union helped her immensely. “I was told, ‘Believe in yourself! I can teach technical skills, but I can't teach the ability to manage people. You have what it takes!’" recounts Christine.

A Job Well Done And apparently, that advice was right—Christine has gone on to do her job, and do it well, with her branch being awarded the President's Award for the Top Branch of 2012. “I love my job,” says Christine. “There are so many reasons. I am proud to say that I have an awesome team that works very hard to make my service centers successful. I enjoy the time I spend with students at the schools we serve. Most of all, I love making a difference in the lives of our members.”

Before becoming the Manager at the Teachers Credit Union, Christine worked as a travel consultant for over 18 years. She is a Certified Travel Consultant and also has experience in retail.

“I manage two service centers in Granger with a staff of 19 people,” Christine explains. “I move between my branches as needed each day and spend a great deal of time working with TCU members to help meet their needs either in-person or on a follow-up call.” She also meets regularly with her staff and spends time coaching them or at local schools giving financial literacy or interview etiquette presentations as well.

Positive Thinking Although she occasionally encounters situations with customers that aren’t always positive, Christine always looks for a way to spin a negative into a positive. She says she considers those negative encounters as “challenges.” “[I consider those encounters] a challenge to dig in to what the issue may be and turn it into a positive for that member,” Christine explains. “I believe it's all about listening and showing empathy.”

As a certified “Sassy” woman, Christine is also involved in her community, of course. Christine helped to start the "Granger Ladies Club" in 2010, where she served as President. “Our motto was, ‘The GLC, giving TLC to the community’’, recounts Christine. She is also a member of Goodwill supporter and a member of the Granger Business Association.

Christine believes in the power of women helping women. For instance, Christine is mentored by Debbie Goffeney. “She is an amazing woman who wears several hats very well,” says Christine. “She is the best listener I know. She is always available, no matter how busy she is. She never makes me feel like I am bothering her. Most of all, she is always willing to lend advice and let me bounce new ideas off of her.” And with all of her Sassy woman behind her, she hopes to climb the career ladder by following in Debbie’s footsteps to become a Regional Manager at TCU. (Somehow, we have full faith that she will succeed!) 

Christine is married to Dean and has two sons, Zach (23) and Josh, who is 31. Outside of work, Christine enjoys running, spinning and spending time with family and friends.

After doing what she dubs the “corporate climb,” Dee says that her goal in life at this point is simple: “I want a nice, little business where people look forward to coming to work and I can bring a smile to family, friends and new acquaintances with beautiful and delicious Gigi cupcakes!”

Dee excitedly recounts the day that she realized that her dream would become a reality. “The most recent best day was watching our Gigi's Cupcakes exterior sign being installed!” Dee remembers. “It was proof that all of our hard work and planning was becoming a reality!”

Dee Florea is the owner of Gigi’s Cupcakes, a national franchise cupcake boutique that opened this month in Granger.

A Sassy team As any team leader comes to find out, Dee has learned that as a business owner, she is only as strong as her team. Dee cites “assembling a great team” as one of her proudest career moments. “I am proud of the caliber of individuals I have in place,” Dee gushes. “My store manager, Mary Juckett, who is also an active partner, is incredibly passionate about our business and driven to succeed. I have some extremely talented decorators and bakers who make me laugh everyday, and a lovely group of high school age, young ladies working customer service!”

Making a change Prior to this new business venture Dee worked many years in the pharmaceutical industry with AG Bayer and Pfizer. She began working in Los Angeles in the 1980’s, came back to central and northern Indiana and was later promoted to a Hospital Sales Specialist in Detroit where she managed large teaching hospitals.

One of the best parts about Dee’s career, to her, is the freedom that self-employment brings. “I love being self employed and having the control to make decisions I believe in,” explains Dee. “The reason I love what I am doing is that it is not a ‘job’ to me, it is ‘my baby’!

I also love that I am doing something that will bring joy to others.

Face it—cupcakes are fun! What an honor to be able to share in our customer's special celebrations, weddings, birthdays, graduations, holiday parties, corporate events or fund-raising. I have always loved to throw a good party and now I can do it everyday!”

A role model One of the most inspiring things we find in all of our Sassy women is how they draw their strength from other women—and Dee is no exception. She cites her mother as her inspiration and role model in life. “My mother was not a career woman,” Dee says. “She worked extremely hard her whole life, but few would call her a professional.

My mother is now 91 years old and was one of twelve children growing up during the Depression. She inspires me because she had to drop out of high school to work. After raising her five children and while in her seventies, she went back and got her GED. I love this about my mother.”

And Dee is no stranger to a little bit of Sass, either. “Dee is...fashionable, just a polished gal with a great personality. She is also starting her own business, which shows she is a risktaker, with a desire to succeed,” says her friend Tracy Schrimsher.

Dee is a native of her beloved Culver, IN and has a Bachelor of Science degree from Ball State University. She lives in Granger with her husband of 29 years, Rich. The couple has two sons, Tucker and Max, along with four pets: Miss Maisey, a black lab named George, and Miah and Kiah, two Yorkie sisters. 

TINA McLean Tina loves her celebration of life career so Director of Senior Yoga, much that she maintains that it is “imposSolace Yoga Studio sible” for her to have a bad day at work.

“This type of work is so rewarding, it is not possible to have a worst day,” says Tina emphatically. Tina says she loves Yoga because she gets to share the gift of yoga with others. “I am able to see the changes that occur when older people start moving again,” she explains. “They are able to gain freedoms such as traveling again and being able to go out with friends. Yoga creates an atmosphere of like-minded people and they are very happy.”

A graduate of Indiana University, Tina McLean is the Director of Senior Yoga - Solace Yoga Studio, where she teaches people yoga to people over 50 years of age.

Meeting a need Prior to her work in yoga, Tina was in the insurance industry for 28 years and served as the President of Riverwalk Insurance Solutions. Tina decided to get involved in the yoga movement after talking with her daughter, who owns Solace Yoga Studio. “ We realized that there was a need for someone to teach the more mature people in the community,” Tina explains. “We discussed it and I became certified to teach Seniors and became a Certified Yoga Instructor.” Tina doesn’t consider her work with the studio as a job, but rather a celebration of life. The studio offers many kinds of Yoga, including Hatha, Kripalu, Yin and Hot Yoga.

In addition to her work at the studio, Tina is particularly proud of her involvement with the local Assisted Living Facilities, where she often goes to teach yoga classes to the residents. “I work with a lot of people in wheel chairs and people that are disabled from strokes,” explains Tina. “I get a lot of hugs when I go to the facilities. Many of these people have not seen anyone from their family or gotten a hug from anyone. I make sure they get them. I am blessed beyond words to see the improvement that one hour a week doing Yoga can make for a senior. I get a lot of ‘God bless you for doing this.’ That means the world to me, because I believe for a little while I am making a difference for someone that has been forgotten.”

Inspiring others Tina is an inspiration to many other sassy women in the community.

“Tina is an amazing woman and the only person specializing in Senior Yoga in this community,” comments one of her nominators, her daughter, Liz Nierzwicki. “Tina is retired but started her second career in Senior Yoga in 2012. Tina is an amazing asset to my team and she always goes above and beyond to help her students feel comfortable and safe. She works so hard to make these older people feel good and part of a community again.”

Outside of her role at the yoga studio, Tina enjoys walking, swimming, reading and traveling.

Tina has three grown children and has been married to Ronnie for 3 and ½ years. They are the proud parents of one fur baby, a Pomeranian dog. Tina is mother to Lisa and Misty, who are both 41, Jerry, 39 and Liz, 35. She is also a grandmother to seven grandchildren. 

Holiday Fashion Show The Fashion Event of the Season

fter you hand over your keys to the valet waiting to park your car, you step onto the red carpet as cameras flash, ready to snap a picture of you looking your sassy best. You pose with your best gal pals, before checking in and enjoying free wine, door prizes, giveaways, shopping, appetizers—and a New York fashion week style runway show.

For the staff here at Sassy, the event was a wonderful way to connect with the women who are making a difference in the community—and just plain fun to see all the fashionable ladies in our area!

“EVERYONE there had an incredible time!” says Kathy Solin Miller. “[We] loved the gift bags, coupons and extra surprises!” And among the fun? Along with loads of incredible giveaways from local boutiques and sponsors, one lucky Sassy lady walked away with $3,000 worth of spa products from The Centre, P.C.!

The Glitz

This year, the Glitz Factor of Glitz & Sass took it up a notch with a brand-new (and beautiful) venue. The Morris Inn, one of the co-sponsors of the fashion show, hosted the event in the gorgeously recently renovated luxury inn, right on the campus of Notre Dame.

“The Glitz and Sass Fashion Show was an amazing start to glam up the season and help with a style pickme-up for the holidays,” says Morris Inn employee Heather Goralski, who helped to coordinate the event.

“Morris Inn was thrilled to host this beautiful occasion which brought together many local businesses and elegant guests from our community. We were thankful to be a partner in this stunning event!”

The Sass

All of the boutiques at the show worked the runway—with a few special audience member surprises thrown in for fun! The featured fashions ranged from the perfect holiday outfit to kids’ clothing and high-fashion straight from fashion week.

And as Glitz & Sass is all about, fashion goes beyond surface-deep. Lori Miller, whose mother, Sharie Conard, owns Studio 1 Boutique, brought her daughter with her to the show, explains: “Your show helped her see things differently and what she is missing. I have a new appreciation for fashion shows!” Lori says.

As a manager of the store, I say that feeling "Sassy" is more a state of mind!! I love working with people and helping them find great things that make them feel sassy too!

What designer influences you the most? One of the designers that influences me the most is Ralph Lauren. He always has a classic look that lends itself to being timeless and more on the traditional side.

How does your boutique get involved in the community?

Community involvement is very important to us.

We are always part of 3rd Fridays each month, as well as all local events, parades, public library events, Summer, Fall and Ice Festivals. We participate in several fundraisers, local school events and charitable organizations throughout the year too.

What special events does your boutique do throughout the year?

We do several special events throughout the year. One of our favorites in the Spring was our "Wine and Design Night" with Chicago Designer, Paul Sisti who brings his amazing one-of-a-kind pieces of apparel into the store for our guests to try on and purchase something unique that no one else has. All his pieces are made in his home right on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago! We've also had live models in the store during 3rd Fridays and held in-store scarf tying classes.

What has been the most exciting point of your career?

The most exciting part of my 15 years at the store was changing The Cinnamon Stick into a great Boutique right in the middle of "Amish Country" and how well it has been received.

We have built an amazing local customer base and are continuing to gain new customers from Elkhart, Granger, South Bend and beyond!

We've had record sales this year and look forward to another exciting new year!

Your STORY As a business major in college, I always wanted to own my own business. I worked in management at JCPenney for 28 years. What’s been the most exciting point of your career? Watching our business grow. For example, we are closing in on 25,000 Facebook Fans, which is really exhilarating. It makes me feel confident that women are loving what we're about and are having a good experience when they shop with us.

Favorite item that you are carrying right now in your store?

Our fleece-lined leggings are a customer favorite, and I also love our leopard ruffle infinity scarves.

What’s the price range of items in your store? $30-$100.

What do you think are the most important characteristics of the Sassy woman? I think a Sassy Woman is someone strong and successful, but has compassion and kindness at her center.

What designers influence you the most and why? Coco Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Marine Blu, Marchesa and Tory Burch.

These designers all have a great blend of classic style, while mixing in fantastic details and embellishments.

Favorite seasonal item? For Fall and Winter, it’s fur, layering, boots and scarves—the options are endless and so fun!

Fashion Trends for 2014? Some of the top trends include the color wine or deep red, statement necklaces, big chunky scarves, plaid shirts, animal prints and chevron and tribal prints.

What special events does your boutique do?

We host a number of fashion shows, and have sale events almost every weekend.

How does your boutique get involved in the community?

We love to have sales and events where we donate a portion of our sales back to different charities or initiatives. We also give out hundreds of gift cards for charitable silent auctions and fundraisers.

Your STORY We’ve been around for 53 years, my grandfather started the practice in 1960, my father took over the practice in 1986 and I joined the practice 5 years ago, so we have three-generations of history. We are proud to be a family-owned business in the Michiana area. We are a full-service eye care provider, so we serve everyone from toddlers to grandparents. We do glasses and routine-eye exams to LASIX and cataract surgery, as well as offering fashion frames and designer eyewear, of course.

Since opening our doors in 1960, Boling Vision Center has donated more than five million dollars to organizations and programs throughout the Michiana Community. Just a few of our outreach efforts include Kindness to Prevent Blindness, partnerships with AIDS Ministries, Women’s Care Center, Center for the Homeless, Salvation Army, Minority Health Coalition, Faith Mission, Elkhart Community Schools' Lucille Wilcox Foundation and the Council on Aging; Boling Vision Center’s Christmas Bonus Program, Raise the Bar Drum Line and the Elkhart Education Foundation.

What special events does your boutique do?

We do a great deal of special events at Boling Vision Center! We do an annual LASIK Open House where we feature a LIVE LASIK procedure as well as tours of our facility and LASIK suite. We also host regular Botox & Bubbly events where friends can get together to look as young as they feel!

For sunglasses, I'd have to say Gucci and Prada due to their consistency in providing dramatic frame styles, the perfect amount of bling and a high-quality product that transcends the trends and will prove to be stylish for seasons to come.

As a business owner, what makes you feel Sassy?

As a business owner, I feel sassiest when I can be an inspiration and a positive role model for other women in the workplace by demonstrating that confidence, intelligence and ambition are critical for long-term, sustainable success. It is no surprise to me that beauty and sass comes in all different shapes and sizes, so I encourage all women to be bold enough to seize learning and growth opportunities, to believe in yourself during times of triumphs as well as failures, to strive to have a positive relationship with oneself, and to never allow anybody (including yourself) to put a limit to your dreams.

What’s been the most exciting point of your career?

The most exciting point in my career would have to be when I was elected to the AE Board of the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators as the representative for mid-sized eye care practices across the nation. As the youngest of the 10 Board Members selected across all 50 states, I was amazingly honored and humbled to have been considered in such high esteem by my colleagues in the eye care community. I am looking forward to serving on the board for the next 2 years, where I will be contributing to professional development articles, scholarly journals, industry-specific books and publications.

Your STORY We opened in 2004, so this June will be our 10th anniversary. My mom was an interior designer, so I grew up with the merchandising side of her business in Chicago and I really enjoyed it. I’m passionate about fashion, so I combined the two and that’s what makes Jules work, because we have the home décor with the fashion that warms up the space. The experience I learned from my mom really translates to my work now–it’s just clothes instead. I love my job.

What sets you apart from the rest?

People love to come in and check out the displays and get ideas for decorating their homes. Customers will buy an entire idea or pallet and we color-coordinate and mix the clothes and the jewelry all in one space.

Sometimes the customers will even buy the flowers; it stimulates people. Many people come in, but aren’t there to buy anything—they just want to look around.

It’s all about the whole experience.

What designers influence you the most and why? I really do not have one. Most designers are over the top with their entire line and are not realistic for the average women. It’s super fun to look at on the runway, but I always want to change something to make it wearable for everyday.

I like bits a pieces from several different designers.

If your boutique was an accessory, what would it be and why? Purse... we are filled with a little bit of everything a woman could need!

As a business owner, what makes you feel Sassy?

To see a customer walk out of my store feeling like a new women...loving their purchases and knowing that they are super excited to put them on! I never like to push sales in Jules. They will only end up hanging in someone's closet with the tags attached.

What’s been the most exciting point of your career?

Jules Boutique won small business of the year and Main Street Store Front in the state of Indiana…both in the same year!

Everything. But mostly our selection and service. We are large enough to offer a vast variety and selection, but small enough to still hand pick and know our customers.

What motivates you in this economy?

Our business was started during the Great Depression (1931), and has encountered and survived many cultural and economic conditions through the years including catalogs, the Internet and the recent 'Great Recession'.

Finding ways to continually reinvent ourselves and stay relevant in a changing world is our daily challenge. And it always comes back to the same thing: Treat the customer right and give her what she wants.

Many, but our biggest is probably United for Fashion, a breast cancer awareness fashion show and luncheon. It benefits United Cancer Services of Elkhart Co. We've raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for this phenomenal local operation. And all the money stays in Elkhart County.

Campus Ministry and the Department of Music present a service with traditional Advent and Christmas music and scripture in the candlelit church. The Saint Mary’s College Women’s Choir, the Collegiate Choir, the Loretto Choir, the Liturgical Choir and Moreau Chamber Ensemble participate. The public is invited to attend this free event.

The Music Village

Swing dancing lessons from 7-8 p.m. every Friday night with the Notre Dame Swing Club, and open dancing afterward! The lesson being taught on the 20th will be Charleston and the coaches will be Calla Couch and Sukesh Shekar Cost is $8 with a $1 discount for each canned good (up to $3 off ). n September, Sassy was proud to feature Heather Bachmann, a 38-year-old mother of two who is battling breast cancer. Heather embodies the Sassy woman’s fighting spirit all while proudly wearing a smile on her face and we have been following her journey to recovery right here every month.

November held something big in store for Heather—little did she know that when she headed out to the annual Hello Gorgeous! comedy luncheon with her best friend in tow, that she would be getting the surprise of a lifetime!

Hello Gorgeous is a non-profit organization founded by Kim Becker (who happens to be one of our 2014 Women to Watch—learn more about her on page 30!) and her husband that provides complimentary, professional makeovers and cosmetic education to women battling all cancers. The women are surprised with candy, flowers, and a head-to-toe makeover, complete with a new outfit, wig if needed and ending in a big reveal party for her and family and friends. Hello Gorgeous! also trains affiliate salons on how to create the Hello Gorgeous! Experience.

When Hello Gorgeous! hosted a comedy luncheon and silent auction on November 9, Heather was looking forward to a fun day out—but she had no idea what was in store for her.

Kim and Heather’s best friend had been planning a surprise makeover for Heather for months.

“My best friend and I went with Kim to the event and we were in there eating and I was kind of listening, kind of not,” Heather describes. “I heard them start talking about a 38-year-old mother of two who fought cancer and I’m thinking, ‘Wow, I’d like to meet her—we have a lot in common! And then she talked about her mother passing away, I thought ‘Wow, I’d really like to meet her!’ When I heard who nominated, I realized it was me. I turned around and there were roses and 10 people behind me!” she says with a laugh.

Heather was whisked away to the Hello Gorgeous! bus parked outside, where she was treated to a head-to-toe makeover, complete with a manicure, pedicure, facial, massage, chocolates and flowers, make-up, haircut and style, beauty products galore, a brand-new outfit and what Heather describes as “the most rockin’ pair of shoes you’ve ever seen.”

Last month, Heather shared with us that her hair had finally started to grow back and she was experiencing a “chemo curl,” a common condition in which cancer patients’ hair follicles are damaged, causing the hair to grow in with a “kink.” Well, Hello Gorgeous! fixed Heather right up, with a brand-new, sassy pixie cut. “It’s adorable and I love it!” exclaims Heather.

And although Heather is currently battling an infection in the breast that had cancer in it, her attitude and spirit are as sparkly as her new glittery heels and she is incredibly grateful for the surprise makeover that helped her feel a little bit more like herself.

For the last year, with chemo and everything, you forget what it’s like to be a girl,” Heather says quietly. “It strips you of anything that makes you a woman.
