The Ultimate Book of Imposters

Imposters have been fooling people since the beginning of time.

According to Ian Graham, author of The Ultimate Book of Imposters, there are four main reasons someone might be willing to lose everything in order to put on a different face. He calls these the four E’s: Envy, Ego, Escape and Espionage. The book is divided into several groups of imposters, from false heirs to fugitives from justice, with several well written stories in each group.

This book tells over 100 different stories of well-known imposters, including those of Frank Abagnale, which the film Catch Me If You Can was based, Hawley Harvey Crippen, one of Britain’s most notorious murderers. There are stories of lesser known people such as jazz musician Billy Tipton, who upon his death was discovered to actually be a woman and Victor Lustig, who impersonated a French government official so convincingly that he sold the Eiffel Tower, twice.

This well researched book is full of fun facts and humorous stories. It begs the question, do you really know your friends as well as you think you do?

Fashion is not about trends, nor is it just about self-expression. Fashion demands a little bit of brain.

Here are a few tricks and tips for you this season: Let’s Start from the Bottom Up: Shoes

Summer is here and you are toned, tan and wearing shorts.

Wear shoes that keep you closer to the balls of your feet rather than on your heels. This way the line and shape of your legs is more visible and ankles are more defined. Flats are fun, just remember to favor forward. A short wedge is also comfortable and flattering! The biggest enemy in this department is flip-flops!

Even though they are comfortable, they are not the best choice.

Choose Your Colors Wisely

When choosing colors, pretend you are in Italy choosing your gelato. Bright colors are popular but they scream artificial. If you decide to go cosmic, remember your venue. And despite personal taste, rich milk-based flavors (and colors) don’t always jive with sorbets. And it’s not because it tastes so awful, but because (as the Milanese will communicate by their disgust) you are essentially ruining one of the flavors. This can, to some degree, be applied to color choices. If you pair items, think what’s best for both. Fashion is not just about looking good enough to leave the house.

Embrace Silk

Silk is an incredibly under-used fabric. The perfect breezy, breathing top to switch into rotation (under a blazer or with a skirt for the office) is a silk camisole. With the right cut and shape, it should not look like lingerie. And, it can be washed at home! Don’t let jersey fabric take over for the sake of comfort, it’s not hard to have silk. A benefit of having a go-to tailor or seamstress is that these artists normally buy silk in bulk and can whip up a women’s silk top while they are sleeping. Retail prices for silk items do not tell the truth about silk

Take Extra Care Of Your Hair

Want a clean beach head? Keep your scalp and strands clear with occasional apple cider vinegar rinses (1:10 ratio). Seawater, city-air, lakes and pools don’t go away after one shampoo. To achieve more accentuated red-highlights in your hair and help fight frizz and give strands a chance to curl and wave, after showering rub a few drops of olive oil in your hands and apply to the lower half of your hair while scrunching. It even protects against chemicals and salt from damaging your hair!

Always Remember The

Golden Rule

Speaking of ratios, have you ever heard of the Golden Ratio? It is a Greek concept of the perfect proportion, a number that literally makes the eye happy. In simple terms, think of a one-to-three ratio and the short linelong line combination. Ever wonder why crop tops, high-waist pants, color blocks and Daisy Dukes gained such popularity?

You may need to experiment with the ratio. When choosing dresses, go for a longer skirt and an emphasized waist closer to your chest. Sometimes short hemlines work against body types and seem to cut the body in half. If a dress has no clear waistline, experiment with colors to achieve this proportion.

Color blocks are more striking when not half and half, but more of a one-tothree proportion.

And don’t forget; the proportions of your face are much closer to their perfection when you smile!

To Decant or

Not to Decant?

That is The Question!

First, what is a wine decanter?

A decanter is a vessel that holds the decantation of a liquid, like wine, that may contain sediment. The standard decanter can hold a normal sized bottle of wine. It is usually made of glass and it can be used to serve the wine as well. Another name for a decanter is called a carafe. History shows that decanters played a significant role in the serving of wine. It was easy to handle by a single servant that way. When glass became scarce they used materials like bronze or earthware to house the wine.

Now, how do you decant a bottle of wine?

With an aged bottle of wine, you want to take your time with it. Open the bottle as you normally would and then begin to pour the wine slowly into the decanter. The common term used is “don’t burse” the wine. This is true with older or aged wines. You want to do it slowly as to preserve the wine and keep the sediment in the bottle. A young wine without sediment can be sloshed right into the decanter. Dump it right in as fast as you want. The only purpose with a young wine is to aerate it so go for it.

Not only is the decanter used as a serving vessel but it is used to aerate it or allow it to “breathe.” It is similar to swirling the wine in the glass allowing oxygenation of the wine to happen and opening up the aromas of the wine. It also helps soften the harsher compounds in a wine like the tannins.

Wine writers alike say it’s good to decant very bold wines like a Borolo, a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Bordeaux. It also can depend on the age of the wine as well. A red wine that has been aged for 10 or more years would definitely benefit from decanting as to take away the sediment that can build. Not only is it displeasing to the eye but to the mouth as well. Some young wines may benefit from decanting but the wines on the shelves at the super market or your local wine shops doesn’t necessarily need to be decanted for sediment reasons but can benefit from the aeration of the decanting process. Most of those wines have been put through mechanical filtrating systems and are most likely sediment free. With that said, if you decant a young inexpensive wine plucked from the super market shelf, the air hitting the large base of the decanter where the wine is will bring out the youthful aromas and soften any tannic properties of it, giving it that aged wine feel. Decanting alters the wine giving it that more youthful bite and encouraging the complexity and aromas of the wine itself.

Some people swear by decanting and some don’t. It’s all a personal preference just like the wine itself. It is a beautiful way to present your young or old red wines to your friends and family and it offers the wine a way to show off with its complexity and aromas.

Let them think it’s new.

How to Achieve Your Best Skin

Three Simple Steps To Smooth, Beautiful Skin Your face is one of the first things people notice about you and it should be treated as such. However, as any busy woman will tell you, sometimes your face doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Makeup artist Chelsea, from Makeup by Keria, weighs in on how to get your healthiest skin yet:

Step One: Determine Your Skin Type • Normal Skin: Women with normal skin won’t notice their face getting very oily nor will they notice dry patches. Generally, pores will be small, leading to firm and smooth skin.

• Oily: While all skin produces oil, women who have oily skin produce more. “It’s more than just a little oil, it’s when you face produces an excess of oil,” Chelsea said. A dead giveaway for oily skin is when your T-Zone (forehead and bridge of nose) is shiny and may feel wet to the touch.

• Dry: Dry skin is often flaky and extremely tight feeling. Your face may feel dehydrated.

• Combination: “Combination skin is just what it sounds like- it’s a mix of oily and dry skin,” Chelsea said. Your face may be oily in some spots while feeling dry in others.

• Sensitive: Having sensitive skin means that using certain products can cause your skin to react in different ways. “Sensitive skin can take on many different forms. It can be like rosacea, or easily irritated and itchy,” Chelsea said. Any type of reaction to a product or even touching your face the wrong way is a key sign of sensitive skin.

Step Two: Establish A Daily Routine • Start each day off by waking up and washing your face. Try to

select soap specific to the skin on your face, as body washes and bars of soap can be harsh on your skin. “Face washes over the counter often work just as well as the expensive stuff,” Chelsea said. “But the most important thing is to find a product that works for your skin.”

• Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! It’s a misconception that only dry skin should be moisturized after being cleansed. “Anytime you wash your face, you should apply a moisturizer,” Chelsea said. Skipping the moisturizer can actually lead to your skin producing more oil to overcompensate after it’s been dried out by a cleanser. Additionally, applying moisturizer before you put on makeup will allow your products to go on more evenly.

• Rewash and moisturize at the end of the day, after you’ve removed your makeup properly. “Always remove your makeup before

you go to bed,” Chelsea said. “It helps to use an exfoliating scrubber to really go deep and remove all the built-up gunk from your pores.” Leaving your makeup on while you sleep can damage your skin and prematurely age it. Sleeping on a satin pillow also aids in keeping skin clean.

s a recent college graduate, I am widely attuned to the varied trends of postgraduate life. In scrolling through my Facebook friends, a healthy sample of approximately 400 college graduates, I see some who, just one or two years out of college, have landed their dream job in a bustling city, many who are in the midst of pursuing an advanced degree to further chase that dream career. Then there are others who are married and staying home to raise the newest members of their family. A humbling number, however, have nestled into a comfortable position (or in many cases, including my own, multiple positions) at institutions that build experience, strengthen connections and pay the rent.

“The rise of online classes and popularity of evening courses, as well as the prevalence of grants and scholarships for post-graduate work, make pursuing these degrees even more attainable.�

Many of us are expert interviewees in constant pursuit of a more stable, fulfilling career who, nevertheless, are well-liked and valued in our current positions and are getting by financially. But en route from job to job or on our evening walks, many of us find ourselves missing that academic stimulation, wanting to further quench our thirst for knowledge and go back to the days of assignment books filled with project due dates and notebooks colored-coded by subject.

So, this leads to the increase in 20-and-30-somethings returning to our alma maters or other universities graduate students.

According to a February 2012 article in The Washington Post, “Two in 25 people age 25 or older have a Master’s as their highest degree-about the same number with a bachelor’s in 1967, according to the Digest of Education Statistics.” This overwhelming statistic proves I, along with many of my peers, am not alone in considering enrollment to one of a plethora of graduate programs.

Mother of two and Indiana University graduate, Catherine Slott, says, “I have an overwhelming desire to become a marine biologist. Yes, this requires going back to school to earn a post-graduate degree; but, this is something I am willing to do.

It helps knowing I can do this while also being a mom to my growing family.”

The rise of online classes and popularity of evening courses, as well as the prevalence of grants and scholarships for post-graduate work, make pursuing these degrees even more attainable. With flexible schedules allowing for students to continue working and/or raising families, the drive to hit the books again seems reasonable and exciting.

It is comforting to know I will not be alone in my self-planned GRE study days during college football watches this fall. Who’s with me in contributing to a Pinterest board entitled “Grad Party #2?”

Business Forum This Month's Question: “I currently have health insurance through my husband's work but I have been hearing that it's always best to have secondary insurance. Should I take health insurance from my own place of employment and how much does it really benefit me?”

our question will require an answer in general terms because of the complexity of health insurance and additional information would be needed on specific coverage’s available from both employers. There are two basis factors to consider: coverage and cost.

Coverage Consideration: If you enroll in your employer’s group plan, your employer’s health insurance would become your primary insurance and your husband's employers plan would become secondary. Depending on the plan design of each employer's plan there may or may not be a Coordination of Benefits. I would suggest that you contact both employers’ insurance carriers and secure written confirmation of the Standard Operating Procedure for Coordination of Benefits.

Cost Consideration: Employer’s in general are required by the health insurance contract to make a minimum contribution of 50% of the Employee Only rate. An employer may voluntarily decide to contribute any amount in excess of the minimum contribution up to 100% of the Employee Only rate. Generally there is no requirement for the employer to contribute to the dependent coverage.

The decision to elect secondary health insurance coverage is specific to the individuals set of circumstances. Electing secondary health insurance coverage while the right decision for some caution should be exercised in assuming or making an absolute statement that is always best to have secondary coverage if available.

Revamp Your Front Entrance We’ve all heard the phrase, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” As a society, we make snap-judgments of everything: people, books and restaurants based on the first few moments of seeing or experiencing them. It’s natural! The same goes for your home. Knowing this, it’s so important to take care of the exterior of your house. Before guests even cross your threshold, their first impression is of the exterior entry of your home. Even if you’re planning to sell your house, revamping and updating the entry adds curb appeal and increases the perceived value of any property.

Why not give your entrance a summer refresh while the weather is still nice?

Here are a few tips to get the ball rolling: Make Way

Be sure that guests are guided to the front door by a clearly marked path. Most people use their garage door or side entrance on a daily basis, so take a moment and walk the path to your front door. Notice anything? Maintain the walkway by keeping weeds and ground cover from taking over. Are there cracks in the pavement or loose bricks that could be a tripping hazard? Get those spots repaired before inclement weather hits.

A Welcoming Sight

While you’re clipping back ground cover from the walkway, take a look at the front of your house from the street. Can you even see the house through all of the shrubs? It’s easy to overlook pruning when you’re busy in the summer, but if those bushes are blocking windows or the front porch, it’s time to trim. If your landscaping is older than ten years, it may be time to replace a few plants. Don’t be afraid to dig old dying shrubs out and add in new ones. Landscaping can change the entire look of a house’s facade. Add some mulch on the ground and you’ll be well on the way to a welcoming entry!

Light It Up

From solar powered landscape lights lining the path to a full on professional lighting plan, your house can look spectacular at night. Professional lighting companies can create a plan to highlight certain architectural elements of your house, playing with angles and shadows to make your house look its best after the sun goes down.

Color Matters

Perhaps one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to enhance an entry is by painting the front door. For a classic look, go with a black front door and black shutters. If you’re feeling a bit more daring, why not make your house stand out with a vibrant red door? Before choosing a color, take into consideration the color of your siding, shutters and roof. The good news is that if you don’t like the color you choose, you can always just paint right over it.

Artful Architecture

The inside of our homes constantly evolves so why shouldn’t the exterior change as well? Research the style of your home and add architectural details that are appropriate. Is your home a Craftsman style? Victorian?

Cabin? Each style has its own decorative elements such as columns, brackets, moldings and trim. Even if your home already dons these details, refresh them with a new coat of paint or stain.

Polish It Off

Hardware and light fixtures are like jewelry. They add that finishing touch and can create a bit of sparkle. Coordinate your light fixture, doorknob, door knocker, house numbers and mailbox by using the same color or metal finish on all.

Let In The Light

If you’re replacing your front door, consider purchasing one with a window or adding full-length windows to either side of the door. This allows light into your home and lets you see just who is outside!

In today’s high-tech world, one of the oldest forms of communications is making a strong comeback. The handwritten note is no longer a lost art but being touted as one of the best ways to convey a personal, impactful message.

The fact that you took the time to craft the message (typically on a nice note card you recently purchased – not a piece of notebook paper you have laying around the house or a dated box of cutesy kitten cards you have left over from high school), address the envelope, buy a stamp and visit a post box or post office all indicate that you value the person and your relationship with him or her enough to make the investment. In an era when our flying fingers can crank out an email in minutes, taking a little bit more time to make it personal counts.

When is a Personal Note Best?

The short answer is – anytime you want someone to know you care enough about them to take the time and effort to write it out. But, there are occasions that definitely call for a personal note. Handwritten thank-yous and notes expressing gratitude for ongoing relationships are always welcome. In fact, a handwritten note thanking a prospective employer for an interview could be the deciding factor in the hiring decision. Most organizations value employees who understand the power of effective communications.

But, don’t worry, you don’t have to write like Shakespeare or Steinbeck when you write your note or letter. A few heartfelt sentences will do the trick. Use your best handwriting! This is an instance in which neatness counts.

The Personal Touch Starts with the Touch

While just taking the time to handwrite a message has value, using a high-quality note or paper stock makes an even bigger impact.

From heavy, finely laid card stock to clean, crisp writing papers, your choice of paper says a great deal. For professional notes, plain colors and heavy stock is always a good choice. For personal correspondence, you can let your personality shine through. A Florentine-lined envelope and bordered sheet whispers elegance and refinement. Monogrammed stationery (which can also be used for professional correspondence) is a bold statement of individuality. Floral and paisley motifs are very feminine; Moroccan designs show a creative flair. Deckle-edged sheets are engagingly retro.

Find a Great Pen

While black ink is the preferred choice for handwritten business correspondence, blue is okay as well. Unless you’re a graphic designer, artist or in the creative arts, other colors for business correspondence are a no-no.

You’ll also want to make sure the pen you use is comfortable for you to hold and lets you use your best handwriting. Some people find a thin barrel is more comfortable while others prefer a heftier barrel.

What to Say, What to Say

The good news about the ubiquity of email and other messaging systems is that we all have practice in putting our words into written form. The bad news is that it’s made us reliant on the ability to cut, paste, backspace and rewrite endlessly.

Rather than writing then rewriting a handwritten note multiple times, draft your message on a scrap piece of paper until you’re satisfied it conveying the message you want.

At a loss for words? The Internet is your friend – there are numerous sites that can help you find the right words for a note of thanks, a letter of condolence or just a quick message to let someone know you’re thinking of them. Whatever words you chose, though, the most important thing is to make sure they’re sincere. Think of the paragraphs or phrases offered by sites as a guideline; they need to be rounded out with details only you can provide. In the case of condolence notes, sharing a memory of time you spent with the recipient’s loved one or telling him/her what aspect of your relationship meant the most is always welcome. For thank-you notes, be specific! Rather than saying, “please accept my thanks for the great birthday gift,” include details about the gift and how you plan to put it to good use.

Is It Right For You?

ot answering to a boss, setting your own hours and working from anywhere – the life of a freelancer sounds pretty great. With employers being reluctant to take on the financial risk of additional workers, freelance working is on the rise. It is estimated by the Department of Labor that freelance or contract workers will outnumber full-time workers by 2020. However, making the transition from full-time employment to freelancer is not a simple task and may not be suitable for certain circumstances.

Freelancing can bring its own set of rewards some of the benefits include: • Flexibility: If the standard nine-to-five

business hours doesn’t work for you, as a freelancer, you can decide when you wish to complete your work for your clients.

This can allow you to set up your schedule around personal or family needs.

• Control: You get to decide what projects

to work on and who you want to work with.

If you dislike how a client treats you, you don’t have to grin and bear it – you can opt to not work with them in the future.

• Earning Potential: No more being

pigeonholed by an annual raise of just a few percent each year. As a freelancer, you can set your own rates and take on as many projects as you’d like.

If freelancing was so easy, no one would set foot in a cubicle and deal with a boss again; however, it comes with some definite challenges that may be barriers – some of the drawbacks include:

• Lack of Stability: You won’t have a regular paycheck

coming in to rely on. Freelancers also have to constantly be searching for their next opportunities, which can be too stressful and high-risk for some people to take on.

• No Benefits: Say goodbye to paid holidays, sick days and

vacations. When you freelance, you’re paid per project or service, so if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. Being your own boss also means taking on some of the administrative tasks you may take for granted, such as having your taxes automatically into deducted or being provided health insurance.

• Lack of Boundaries: When you work for yourself, it can be difficult to set boundaries as to work and personal time.

If after weighing the pros and cons of freelancing, you’ve decided it’s for you, the number one mistake is to just up and quit your full-time job. Transition into freelancing with a plan in mind so you can gauge what it’s like and how successful you are without the risk:

• Start Slowly on the Side: Look for freelance opportunities online or by asking around. Try them out during your free time while you’re still working at your full-time job. This can give you an idea of what it’s like and how clients respond to you. It may work as a side gig, but not necessarily as your career, or you may find yourself in high-demand.

• Build up a Savings Cushion: Set aside around six months to one year of savings before you decide to freelance full-time. You

will be responsible for your own payment invoicing, which means that payment may take longer to receive than your paychecks that come in at the same time like clockwork. Having a savings cushion will give you money to fall back on while you start building your freelance income stream and it becomes regular.

• Find Multiple Clients: Never rely on one freelance client. No matter how regularly they want you to work for them, the cold

truth is they could stop at any moment. Always be on the search for more opportunities so that if one suddenly dries up, you won’t be financially devastated.

• Hire a Tax Professional: Being paid as a freelancer means that you are responsible for paying your own taxes. As a self-

employed person, you may also be able to deduct certain expenses. Consult with a tax professional to determine how to best handle your tax responsibilities so that your freelancing dream doesn’t turn into an IRS nightmare.

Being a freelancer basically means you’re now a small business owner.

he first time I walked into my new house, I instantly noticed two things.

First, our living room was huge and would be perfect for hosting guests. Second, the windows were bare. The only adornments on our

picturesque windows were cheap blinds that looked like they came straight from my old dorm room. While the window itself was beautiful, large and light shedding, it was also a unique shape and size, which made it difficult for

his seems to be a common gripe among homeowners.

You find a house you love, and it seems to be the dream.

The price is right, location is exactly where you want and there’s even a walk in closet that would make Carrie Bradshaw green with envy. But there’s one problem. You can’t find anything that works with your windows. Frankly, windows are meant to be dressed up. They add that certain charm that will take your interior decorating to the next level. Because of this, it’s crucial to find an interior decorator who can tailor to what you want while also being affordable. Fortunately for Michiana, one such designer does exist, and her business goes by the name of Creative Windowear.

The Brains Behind The Business

Angie Shirley, a wife and mother of four, has been in the business of interior design for 25 years. For the past 20 years, she has owned and operated Creative Windowear, a Michiana business that specializes in custom interior design. In her 25 years of experience, Angie has done it all. “I’m pretty much a one person show,” she said. While she accepts any challenge that clients throw at her, she admits that window treatments are her favorite to work on.

What Creative Windowear Offers

Angie has done just about everything from faux painting to reupholstering. However, the window treatments are the most popular, and she offers all newly innovated products when it comes to blinds and shades. Angie is the go-to, trusted designer for all of Michiana. In her 20 years of owning Creative Windowear, she’s styled window treatments for many of Michiana’s glamorousfrom newscasters to high-ranking professors at the University of Notre Dame. She’s even styled local businesses. In addition to faux painting, reupholstering and custom window treatments, Angie also excels in decorating, color consultation, custom bedding and interior painting. The process starts with a client consultation, a meeting where Angie sits down with a client and discusses what they would like done. “I always go with the client’s vision,” she said. “It’s not my taste, it’s theirs.” Next, they go through books with samples of what can be done, all while Angie gets a read on the client’s tastes and preferences. She then designs what they would like, measures for the treatment and then takes the plans to someone who sews the final project. When it comes to sewing, she prefers to bring business to the local community and support area specialists.

How It All Began

Like many successful businesses, Creative Windowear was born from an idea for something else, in this case, boredom! Years ago, Angie started to get restless staying at home with her daughter, craving adult interaction. “After a few months of that, I realized it was driving me crazy not being able to talk to adults,” she said with a laugh. Just to get out of the house, she tried her hand at the selling cosmetics. She found that she enjoyed playing with colors and making customers feel confident and happy. At a friend’s suggestion, she decided to transfer these passions to the business of interior design. While going to school and becoming certified in “Custom Window Treatment Designs,” she worked for another business. After five years, she decided to venture out on her own to start up her own business: Creative Windowear.

Overcoming Obstacles

The road to success wasn’t always easy. When the Recession hit in 2008, she found that people had to tighten the belt and weren’t as willing to splurge on interior decorating. “I really struggled to ask people when I knew everyone was strugglingstay afloat like everyone else in the area, but I wasn’t going to give up,” she said.

The economy impacted Angie as well. While previously she had focused on fabrics and window treatments, when hard times hit, she took up interior and faux painting in order to stay afloatkeep her business running. While learning a new technique proved to be a challenge, it paid off in the end as she had acquired a new skill. The economy pushed her to reach to her full potential, and now she does even more than before.

Looking to the Future

Business is doing better than ever now, and Angie is ready to take on someone who can help her install the finished product.

Additionally, she’s ready to take on more clients. As a self-described “people person,” she has made many new friendships through the years. “In a lot of cases, I’ve became friends with people who started as clients,” Angie said. Not only has she inspired people through her interior decorating, but her smart business sense is commendable as well. Her biggest piece of advice to sassy businesswomen who want to start out on their own is to never give up. “Never think you can’t do it,” she said. “It’s always possible to do anything that you really put your heart and passion towards.”

Jalapeno Poppers Ingredients: 18 Fresh Jalapeno Peppers Halved Lengthwise & Seeded 1 (8 Ounce) Package Cream Cheese, Softened 1 Package Bacon Toothpicks Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Fill each jalapeno pepper with cream cheese and wrap one bacon strip around each jalapeno. Secure with a toothpick. Back for 12 minutes.

Nacho Dip Ingredients: 1 (14 Ounce) Can Diced Tomatoes With Green Chili Peppers, Drained 1 Pound Velveeta® Cheese, Cubed 2 Large Cooked Skinless, Boneless, Chicken Breast Halves, Shredded 1/3 Cup Sour Cream ¼ Cup Diced Green Onion 1 ½ Tablespoons Taco Seasoning Mix 2 Tablespoons Minced Jalapeno Pepper 1 Cup Black Beans, Drained Directions: Put diced tomatoes, cheese, chicken, sour cream, green onions, taco seasoning and jalapenos into a slow cooker and cook until the cheese has melted.

Stir in the black beans and cook for 15 more minutes.

Family 5K and Fun Walk Written By: Jaime Wogoman On June 28th, 2014, the Hannah and Friends Neighborhood hosted their 2nd Annual Family 5K and Fun Walk. 450 members of the surrounding area and South Bend community came out to support Hannah and Friends by running or walking the designated courses.

The courses, designed by members of the Adams High School Cross Country Team, wove through the neighborhood’s horse pastures and surrounding woods. There were also between 75-100 volunteers helping out at the race, including those from the Adams High School football and cross country teams. Many Hannah and Friends families and residents came out to help as well. Participants in the day could either run for time, or walk at a leisurely pace with their friends. Guests were entertained by Indiana’s Miss Amazing winner of 2014, Tiffani Amberg, who sang the national anthem.

Matt Coleman, a resident at Hannah and Friends and race volunteer commented upon the exciting day. “The race was a great experience. Everyone ran hard and lots of people showed up to support us,” said Coleman.

Jacqi Riemersma, an intern at Hannah and Friends, also enjoyed herself. “The day really showed us how much the community loves us. We all had a lot of fun!” she said.

The race aims to bring community members to the Hannah and Friends Neighborhood, to provide information and gain support.

At the race next year, Hannah and Friends expects more walkers and runners and the race is set take place on June 27, 2015.

Hannah and Friends is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and adults with special needs.

A Rosie Place

10th Annual Rosie Classic Another amazing year for A Rosie Place and its 10th Annual Rosie Golf Classic! A Rosie Place celebrated its 10th annual golf event at The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame on July 21st. Players enjoyed exceptional weather, excellent competition and an opportunity to support children who are medically fragile! Major Sponsors for this year’s event included: Wells Fargo, The Medical Foundation, Superior Van & Mobility, David & Kerry Stephens, Logistick Inc., and Universal Forest Products. Players enjoyed sliders from Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and mini treats from Gigi’s Cupcakes. Mr. Paul Kantor, from Viking Spas in Grand Rapids, MI traveled with two teams to attend, complimenting the event, “Everything, and I mean everything, was so well and professionally done.” Tieal Bishop, Executive Director attributes their continued success to “reminding those we have built lasting relationships with that raising money for these special children is really fun… We are just grateful, and we are not afraid to show it!” Don’t let the fun fool you, the competition was fierce with a three way tie for 1st place with 14 under par. A Rosie Place is Indiana’s first licensed hospital dedicated exclusively to serving the growing number of children who are medically fragile right here in Michiana. A Rosie Place exists today because of the generosity of this community!
