fall 2013 TRENDS... get a little new fashion now

Early Season Trend Report It's that time of year again–the seasons change, our closets change and our hankering for a few new things in our wardrobe goes up a notch! Take a peek at what trends we're on the lookout for as we transition into fall!

PRINTS and TEXTURE

For fall 2013, prints go back to basic. Houndstooth, plaid, pinstripe, and leopard all make a bold entrance into boutiques and malls. The IT pattern this season will be houndstooth. This pattern will be seen in many color combinations.

The houndstooth pattern has a very Americana feel – think Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, or Burberry. Polka dots are a fun contrast the masculine feel of the houndstooth and other neutral pallets in the fall line-up this season. Mixing this season is all about hard and soft pieces, along with changing up patterns and textures (think unexpected spring pieces for fall).

HOW TO WEAR IT:

Try balancing the masculine feel of prints with bold patterns. Mix solid colors to create the color-blocked look popular on the runways this season. Try the color blocked look with one unexpected color, like Koi or Vivacious (see colors).

8 July 2013 | SASSY

Noteworthy tip:

Many of these prints have a distinct menswear feel. Try to shy away from wearing these prints as standalone office pieces, but rather choose a menswear print with feminine details.

COLORS

Kermit might think it is not easy being green, but I think we’ve all come to love emerald and all hues of green this summer. If you’ve embraced and come to depend on those greenish hues in your wardrobe, fear not my green loving friends, it’s back – or rather it’s here to stay! The difference between the spring/summer greens and the fall/ winter greens is simply in saturation. The cold weather greens will be, well, more green. Darker warmer tones rule fashion this season. Listen up: Gray is the new black! Let’s be honest, gray has been the new black for a few seasons now, so gray paired with hot green hues is a fresh take on an old favorite combo. Another key look this summer was monochromatic white – we are seeing that again only done in a cold weather way with winter white.

Red is a popular hue this season as well (we are calling this color Samba). The monochromatic feel in all red is very chic.

Vivacious PANTONE 19-2045

Carafe

PANTONE 19-1116

Blue is an important color this season too, and honestly, this season’s blue looks good on everyone! Try a bright cobalt blue that Pantone has named Mykonos Blue.

HOW TO WEAR IT:

First, know what colors look good on you. Many hues have distinct undertones that may not flatter everyone the same way. The blue trend we’ve seen on the runway is one that everyone can run with. The blue-greens are also hues that will be good on all skin tones. If you are one to love monochromatic dressing, try moving to deep lichen green as a neutral. This grey-based dark green can have more of a black look to it and will be a good transition for those trying to add some color into their fall wardrobes.

SHOES

The boot/sandal hybrid will be making a bold statement in early autumn. Once the weather gets too cold to show your toes, just pull on a pair of tights to continue this statement look. A pointed toe is key this season in footwear. Out with those rounded toed pumps, and in with the legelongating pointed toe stiletto. Many heels have a classic 1940's chic feel. We are seeing a lug sole on everything! This look has a rugged, masculine feel and will be a big trend as the weather gets cold. Along this same vein, heavyheeled shoes will be popular as well.

Fall 2013 trends: Flawless skin, Cat-eyes, Soft orange eye- shadows!

Hello beauties!

Hope your summer is going great‌How have you all been dealing with this humidity and hot temperatures this past month? The hot weather has been inviting us to just grab our lounge chairs, towels and tanning lotions and lay by the pool and beach. I hope that most of you remembered to put some SPF on your face, I hope (fingers crossed). Now, don't get me wrong, I love a nice sun-kissed face, but let's make sure it stays healthy and wrinkle-free as long as possible, so don't forget the SPF!

Your Skin!

Let’s take care of those new freckles, sunspots, hyperpigmentation and fading tans FIRST before anything else this fall season. Investing on a Microdermabrasion treatment will pay off in the long run. Visit a salon or spa that specializes in deep skin care treatments or save money by making your own homemade exfoliator.

Homemade Exfoliator recipe: Baking Soda + Coconut Oil : Mix a small amount of each to make a creamy paste and rub softly all over the face and neck for about 30 seconds. I would suggest doing this once a week, but don't overdo it! Your skin needs to regenerate. Coconut oil works on almost every skin type and is an effective emollient, skin nourishment, antiseptic, anti-microbial and antioxidant. After only one use of this DIY exfoliant, your skin will look glowing and beautiful!

What is a Microdermabrasion treatment?

Microdermabrasion removes dead cells from the surface of your skin, the area most prone to damage from scarring, the sun, blemishes, dryness, dirt and pollutants. Removing the damaged layers allows your skin to absorb the nutrients. Ask your skin care provider what type of microdermabrasion will be best for your skin since it varies for everyone. I love the Diamond Microdermabrasion sessions, because it is safe around your eyes and targets fine lines! Even though this is gentle enough to be applied around the eye area, you will see effective results on the rest of your face after the first treatment.

Your eyes!

There are two major trends for eyes that I like for this Fall : Cat-eye and Soft orange lids!

The Cat-eye-- As you know, to achieve this classic look,

an eyeliner (liquid, gel or pencil), will do the trick. I like to use waterproof formulas to avoid any kind of smudging throughout the day to keep a fresh look.

Quick tip: Draw little lines, or connect mini lines. Don’t sweat it by trying to make a perfect line at once. Not even the pro makeup artists do that at times. Then, look at yourself straight in the mirror, and decide how extended you want to create those cat-eye wings. Draw the wings and start bringing them in, toward the existing line. If you made any mistakes just grab a little bit of black or dark brown eye shadow with an angled brush and place it on the edge of the line to fix the problem. Make it fun by using a deep olive green or burgundy eyeliner color !

Soft Orange Lids– Bring the fall colors to your eyelids by warming them up with shimmery eyeshadow tones. An orange shadow will accentuate and flatter most eye colors and will enhance those sunkissed cheekbones. Apply the shadow to your lower lash line or sweep it across the entire eyelid. Add mascara to finish the look!

Until next time! Sincerely, Bethza Seminario #SenoritaBethza SASSY | July 2013

When the Bathroom Beckons The dreaded urinary tract infection. Most of us have experienced at least one of these in our lifetime, and probably are not anxious to ever do so again. But they’re not just unpleasant– if left untreated, they can lead to some serious health risks.

M

ost urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused when bacteria infects the urinary tract, which is made up of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. An infection can occur anywhere along this tract, but the lower part — the urethra and bladder — is most commonly involved. Although bacteria aren't normally found in the urine, they can easily enter the urinary tract from the skin around the anus. Many other bacteria, and some viruses, can also cause infection. The good news, is that bacterial UTIs are not contagious.

Other risk factors for developing a UTI include: • an abnormality in the structure or function of the urinary tract • an abnormal backward flow (reflux) of urine from the bladder up the ureters and toward the kidneys • poor toilet and hygiene habits • the use of bubble baths or soaps that irritate the urethra • a family history of UTIs UTIs are highly treatable, but it's important to catch them early. Undiagnosed or untreated UTIs can lead to kidney damage.

12 July 2013 | SASSY

By Susana Diaz, R.N., CNM, MSN, Certified Nurse Midwife at Memorial Midwifery Centered Care

Signs and Symptoms The signs and symptoms of UTIs can vary from person to person, and may include: • pain, burning, or a stinging sensation when urinating • an increased urge to urinate or frequent urination (though only a very small amount of urine may be produced) • fever • frequent night waking to go to the bathroom • wetting problems, (especially in children) • low back pain or abdominal pain in the area of the bladder • foul-smelling urine that may look cloudy or contain blood

No-Cook Cranberry Relish INGREDIENTS 12 oz. fresh cranberries 1 c. firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 c. orange juice 1 whole orange, peeled 1/4 c. maple syrup 1 Tbsp. grated orange peel 1/2 tsp. each grated lemon peel, ground cinnamon, ginger, cloves

Prevention

It's important to practice good bathroom hygiene. After every bowel movement, women should remember to wipe from front to back to prevent germs from spreading from the rectum to the urethra. Children should be taught not to "hold it" when they have to go because urine that remains in the bladder gives bacteria a good place to grow.

Place all ingredients in a food processor. Using the metal chopping blade, process until the mixture is in small bits. Cover and refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to blend. Serves 12. Nutritional information per serving: 108 calories, 0.1g fat, 0mg cholesterol, 9mg sodium, 140mg potassium, 28g carbohydrates, 2g dietary fiber, 0.3g protein

School-age girls should avoid bubble baths and strong soaps that might cause irritation, and they should wear cotton underwear instead of nylon because Cotton is less likely to encourage bacterial growth. Other ways to decrease the risk of UTIs include drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding caffeine, which can lead to dehydration and irritate the bladder.

Diagnosis

After performing a physical exam and asking about symptoms, your doctor may take a urine sample to check for and identify bacteria causing the infection. If an abnormality is suspected, the doctor may order special tests, such as an ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder or X-rays that are taken during urination.

Ways you can help reduce your chances of a recurrent UTI:

Treatment

UTIs are treated with antibiotics, and most UTIs are cured within a week with proper medical treatment. The type of antibiotic used and how long it must be taken will depend on the type of bacteria that is causing the infection and how severe it is. If you are having severe pain with urination, the doctor may also prescribe a medication that numbs the lining of the urinary tract. This medication temporarily causes urine to turn orange, but don't be alarmed — the color is of no significance. These unpleasant symptoms should improve within 2 to 3 days after antibiotics are started.

When to Call the Doctor

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any unexplained fever with chills, especially if accompanied by back pain or any type of discomfort during urination.

Also call the doctor if your child has any of the following: • unusually frequent urination or frequent urination during the night • bad-smelling, bloody, or discolored urine • low back pain or abdominal pain (especially below the navel) • a fever of over 101°F

Diet Modifications Try to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water and other fluids per day. Cranberry juice and cranberry extract are often suggested because they may prevent E. coli from attaching to the walls of the bladder. Good Bathroom Habits Frequent emptying of the bladder, normal urination and prevention of constipation can all help to prevent recurrent infections. Multivitamins Vitamin C acidifies the urine, making the environment less friendly to bacteria. Avoid Bubble Baths Children should avoid bubble baths and perfumed soaps because they can irritate the urethra. Proper Wiping Technique In females, wiping from front to back after using the toilet will reduce exposure of the urethra to UTI-causing bacteria in the stool. Cotton Underwear Breathable cotton underwear is less likely to encourage bacterial growth near the urethra than nylon or other fabrics.

With just a few simple steps, we can all do our part to help prevent a urinary tract infection become something even bigger. SASSY | July 2013

Cleansing...

Healthy or Not? By Liz Nierzwick

Touted as a way to remove harmful toxins in the body and promote weight loss, cleansing/detox diets are hotter than ever.

What is a Cleanse or Detox Diet?

Detoxing is based on the concept that your body needs help getting rid of unwanted toxins from that accumulate in the body. In theory, once free of toxins, your body functions better, health problems may clear and you may even lose weight. A toxin is a chemical or poison that is known to have harmful effects on the body. The good news is, the body is designed to remove toxins efficiently through organs such as the liver, kidneys, digestive and integumentory (skin) systems and eliminate them in the form of sweat, urine, and feces. The belief is that the body holds onto toxins primarily in the gastrointestinal system (digestive system) as well as the lymph nodes, respiratory systems, and skin. Toxins can cause problems such as fatique, headaches, nausea, rashes, insomnia, and a wide range of other autoimmune problems. Toxins are caused by the following:

• Food additives • Genetically modified foods (GMO) • Food dyes • Artificial sweeteners or flavorings (MSG, aspartame) • Alcohol (sulfites) • Caffeine • Medications • Pesticides or other chemicals used to grow or prepare food • Smog or other substances in the air • Sugar • Impure water

How Do We Detox?

When we detox or cleanse, we are eliminating specific items from our diet, sometimes that may be food altogether and other times it might just be certain types of foods that you eliminate such as breads, corn, dairy, and other processed foods. 14 July 2013 | SASSY

There are a variety of different detox diets and/or cleansing regimens. Most follow a pattern of very low calorie fasting with the addition of small amounts of fruits, vegetables, water, and assorted supplements. Some diets recommend herbs, pills, powders, enemas, and other forms of intestinal and colon cleansing items. Methods vary but what you don’t need are products that are only available through a certain company or website. Here are examples of popular detox diets and cleansing practices:

• Master Cleanse or Lemonade Diet • Fat Flush Diet • Liver Cleanse Diet • Raw Food Diet • 21-Day Sugar Detox • 3, 5, 10, or 30-Day Juice Cleanse • Colon or Liver Cleanse

What Are the Benefits of a Detox & Do They Work?

Proponents believe that occasionally cleansing (1-2 days max) the body can clear the body of poisons that have built up. They also suggest that detox diets help with weight loss. Other claims range from greater energy to the prevention and cure of chronic diseases. Beyonce made the maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper, Master Cleanse (also known as the Lemonade Diet) famous when she dropped 20 pounds quickly for her role in Dreamgirls. But she regained the weight soon after and, in interviews, warned dieters away from the regimen. Weight loss occurs on some of these plans because they are so low in calories and can cause short-term weight loss. However, any fad diet is nothing more than a quick fix and is not recommended for sustained, longterm weight loss.

On some programs, weight loss occurs because you are eliminating unhealthy food choices; in that case, those detox plans are a healthy option and make sense long term. Whether or not a detox diet is safe depends on the plan and how long you stay on it. Detox diets lasting a day or two are unlikely to be harmful for most healthy adults. But high-risk people such as; the elderly, anyone with a chronic disease, pregnant women, and children are advised against any type of fasting.

What is the Problem With Detox Diets?

The biggest problem of a cleanse or detox diet is the elimination of food and you can't and shouldn’t maintain this for long periods of time. Sure, initially you will lose weight, but this type of diet will most likely cause muscle loss, compromised immune system, binging, and moodiness. The biggest problem of all is when you start fasting, your body is such a smart machine, and it will adapt by going into conservation mode by slowing down the metabolism. When you finally go back to eating, any lost weight will come back and because the metabolism is slower your body cannot process the same amount of food as before so you gain pure fat when you start eating again.

Other Major Problems with Detoxing/Cleansing:

• Fasting can rob your intestines of healthy bacteria that aid digestion and boost immunity. • Rapid weight loss = loss of (metabolic boosting) lean muscle. Without enough protein in the diet, your body must get and WILL get protein from some other source – so it turns to your own muscle mass. At the end of the fast, you weigh less, but your body will be higher in fat and lower in muscle. • Whenever you follow an extremely restrictive diet plan, it is usually followed by an extreme binge. • Thyroid functioning slows and can be irreparable. • The thermogenic process slows.

Is There a Healthier Way?

If your goal is weight loss, don’t rely on detoxing and cleansing, as this can forge an unhealthy relationship with food, and it certainly will not get you the long-term results you are looking for. Instead, go with the most true and tested way to lose those unwanted pounds, with a balanced diet and exercise. Incorporate the following healthy lifestyle practices into your life:

• Eat a more plant-based diet (more vegetables). • Choose grass-fed, organic meats. • Exercise. • Do weight bearing exercises at least 3x per week to strengthen and build metabolic boosting muscle. • Aim for 3 high intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions per week. • Try dry brushing to remove toxins through the skin. • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Always start your day with water before anything else. • Get enough fiber from vegetables and fruit. If need be, take a fiber supplement such as Fiber 3 by Now Foods. • Get 7-8 hours of sleep. • Always make sure that you are getting your macronutrients daily (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates). A healthy diet provides for at least A healthy diet provides for at minimum, 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day. • Take a probiotic daily (also buy some for your kiddos). A good probiotic should be kept refrigerated. Although only you can decide if a detox diet is right for you, keep in mind that you don't need to detox in order to enjoy a healthy diet that nourishes mind, body and soul.

There is little scientific evidence that detoxification is necessary or effective for good health or weight loss. The good news is, your body is designed to remove toxins efficiently and you don’t need detox diets, pills or potions to help your body do its job.

Elegance

Known for his love of classic pieces, lifestyle expert Andrew Skipper shares some of his decorating principles for creating stylish spaces:

A

ntique volumes of leather bound books, marble and brass lamps with dazzling crystals, and bronze statues are just some of the objects that surround me every day in my study which I use as a home office. But it’s not all just for show. This room, as well as the rest of my house is just as practical as it is posh. Hidden behind cabinet doors and closets are all my files, paperwork, office machines, inspiration boards, and everything else that is necessary for running a design firm.

By Andrew Skipper

Organization is key

One key to making any space feel luxurious is organization. Who wants to walk in and see stacks of paperwork on the dining table or dirty laundry strewn all over the floor? No one. That’s why creating a home for everything is the first step of designing any space. Ask yourself, “What needs to be put away? Where will it go? Do I need more hidden storage such as a cabinet, wardrobe, or a chest of drawers?” Once you address the issue of storage, you can move on to the fun part of creating an elegant room. Whether I’m working on a traditional living room or a super modern kitchen, I usually begin by choosing a color scheme. To me, there is no need to worry about color trends or what’s “in.”

Color comes first

I always try to help my clients select a palate that they like. After all, they are the ones who are going to be living in the space! I am partial to deep, rich colors rather than pastels. Even my kitchen is painted black! It has quite the dramatic effect. I painted the paneled walls in my living room a dark charcoal gray with bright white trim. I knew I would be using mostly antiques in this room and I didn’t want it to feel too “Grandma’s house,” so my paint colors needed to be a bit young and hip.

Identify your style No matter what your style is, I always recommend incorporating a few antique pieces into rooms. They add that sense of old world glamour and help interiors to feel as if they’ve been assembled over time. You can keep antiques forever and don’t have to constantly buy new pieces when trends change. Some of my favorite objects to use are urns, covered jars, vintage busts, and tapestries. These are the sort of things that add instant glamour and a strong sense of sophistication.

If I had to choose one decorating mantra, it would be, “Know thyself.” Who do you want to be in your home? Are you casual and laid back? Do you love old Hollywood glamour? Are you attracted to the exotic? Once you begin to answer these questions you’ll be on the way to discovering your personal style and that is a great jumping off point to creating special spaces in your home for you and your loved ones.

The 80's called ... they want their pants back! Warning: what you are about to read is a breath of fresh, crazy, hilarious air in the midst of our professional businesswomen's magazine. It is not for the faint of heart or for those with no sense of humor. If you're afraid of a massive attack of laughter, proceed with caution. ~The Sassy Magazine Administration

If you grew up in the 1980's, you already know how no-no notorious the style of the day was. Perhaps you had a "Frankie Says RELAX" t-shirt you teamed with a Member Only jacket. Or were you the preppie who layered two Izod shirts with the collars up-turned and matching pants with whales stitched on them? Oh wait, I bet you were the one wearing gigantic earrings, an oversized Flashdance shirt and leg warmers. AAhhhhh. Good times. The point is, we all thought we were cool back then. I know I did. My defining fashion statement at the time was my neon purple parachute pants. I wore them proudly with a white shirt and a super skinny black tie. Yeah, that's right, I was bitchin'! For reasons unknown, I had shuffled these parachute pants from my parents basement to my first apartment, to a condo or two and then to my current home. All without even realizing it. Over many, many years. I had long forgotten these aviatrix slacks of mine until last week. It was then that I discovered them smooshed at the bottom of a bin, under a cardboard Zima box left over from college. Just like on Antiques Roadshow, cleaning out my basement yielded a treasure. And the memories came flooding back ... As I recall, these vintage purple parachute pants cost my mother $35 and, I assume, a large chunk of her soul. But I had to have them. As 18 July 2013 | SASSY

a gangly freshman in high school my very identity was wrapped up in stuff. Stuff other people had. Stuff I desperately wanted. Stuff that would boost my self-esteem. So, since being myself wasn't even a consideration, I tried to turn myself into Molly Ringwald. (The Breakfast Club Molly, not the 16 Candles one.) I also tossed in a little Wham! with a light sprinkle of Flock of Seagulls. Think edgy, but not cloying. You see, I wasn't babe-a-licious like some of the other girls in my grade ... which is probably why my mother gave in to these purple pants. And guess what? It worked! Those balloon trousers of mine ended up in the same room as celebrities!

I wore them when I met Tristan Rogers, aka Scorpio, from the soap opera General Hospital. It was back in the Luke and Laura days and he signed an autographed picture for me at a mall. Remember that? When famous people would do shopping center appearances? If I recall correctly, Tiffany owes her entire "I Think We're Alone Now" career to the likes of JC Penny and Lord and Taylor. And, speaking of pop stars, I was wearing that grape-colored beauty when I screamed my eyes out at a Rick Springfield concert. "RRIIIICCCKKKKKKK!!!" With all of that history you would think I would enshrine this, my vintage fashion garment, in a ceremonial display case or drape it over a gilded hanger. Or, better yet, waggle my buns back into them and dance around to "U Can't Touch This" until the low seam stitching caused me to fall flat on my face. But I won't. For the following reasons: • I am not M.C. Hammer. • My crotch (thank the good Lord) has not dropped below my thighs.

• I am not color blind. • I do not live in New York City. • I am not a pirate. Plus, they are a size 6. I am not a size 6 anymore. So, even if I were to suddenly decide to take up singing and dancing, my lady parts dramatically plunged to the earth, my vision went wonky and I moved to New York to be a gay pirate, I would not be able to wear them. Furthermore, displaying them, anywhere, would definitely be weird. Imagine all of the questions ...? So for now I will put them back into the storage bin, minus the Zima box. Who knows, maybe someday when I'm old and withered I'll be able to slide back into them. Perhaps I'll even put on some enormous earrings and do a dance. Maybe turn up the collar on my shirt? Hopefully they will make me feel cool again. Like I did in the 80's. Even if it's just for a moment. One, sweet, Hammer-time moment. Because you can't touch the 80's. EVER! And who would want to?

Professional 411:

Professional Role: Director of Media Relations, Saint Mary’s College, a Catholic, liberal arts women’s college founded by the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1844. In my position, I serve as the spokesperson for the College and work to increase Saint Mary’s profile with the news media. With the help of faculty, staff, and students, I identify opportunities for story pitches, press releases, and media interviews. It’s a position I feel that I’ve been preparing for my whole life. In addition to my news reporting experience, I attended an all-girl’s Catholic high school and I’m a cradle Catholic—all of which, I feel, helps me to understand and represent the College.

Tell us about your TV Career:

I came to South Bend in 1990 as a reporter for WSBT-TV (I was Gwen McKillip back then). I worked as a reporter for CLTV (Chicagoland Television News) for a couple years when we got married. My husband is from South Bend and we felt drawn back to the area to raise a family. I worked as a weathercaster at AgDay (WNDU) and then Fox 28 and then went to the South Bend Tribune as a newspaper reporter and eventually the convergence coordinator sharing news from the paper with WSBT-TV viewers for a segment called “Tomorrow’s Headlines Tonight.” (WSBT-TV and the South Bend Tribune are both owned by Schurz Communications Inc.) I then worked at Press Ganey in South Bend as a corporate writer, which gave me experience in a marketing department.

Why media?

My parents saw at an early age that I wasn’t afraid of talking in front of a crowd and that I really enjoyed writing research papers. I guess I had the makings of a TV reporter. What helped bring this career aspiration into focus was meeting Larry Moore, then a weekend anchor at ABC 7 in Chicago, and his family at church. He became my mentor. I interviewed him for the school paper and he offered me a short list of what he said were the best journalism schools. That list included the University of Kansas, where I ended up going to school. He and his family ended up in Kansas City, where he remains an anchor at KMBC. They kindly hosted me for many holiday weekends and even a summer when I interned at the station.

Born to be in the media?

The first time I grabbed a microphone was at a Shakey’s Pizza Parlor when I was probably 5 or 6. There was a little band there, including a guy in a red and white striped vest playing a banjo. He asked if anyone knew the song “I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Weiner” and I ran up to the mic and belted it out.

ter what their major is or their interests are, there is a common theme: These are empowered women who are passionate about (fill in the blank) and they are driven to bring about change for the better.

Do you have a mentor in business? If so, who is it and why?

I’ve had several mentors in my career. My current boss, Karen McDonald, assistant vice president for integrated marketing communications, is inspiring to me. She stays current on what’s trending, whether it’s in higher education or the business world. She challenges her team to think outside the box and not get stuck in a rut. She shows us respect and asks for our input, which is how we are treated right up the line, from Shari Rodriguez, vice president for College Relations to Carol Ann Mooney, president of Saint Mary’s College.

Tell us about a few of your current projects at Saint Mary’s …

The Paper Analytical Devices (PADs) Project: This is a scientific initiative, led at Saint Mary’s by chemistry professor Toni Barstis, that could have a social justice impact in developing countries where counterfeit pharmaceuticals is a serious problem. A PAD is a chemically treated paper that resembles a business card and can screen for counterfeit or low quality drugs. It’s technology that could ferret out other fake drugs that promise cures for everything from malaria to the flu. To check for ingredients found in low quality or counterfeit pharmaceuticals, a person simply swipes the pill onto the PAD and dips the PAD in water. Color changes on the PAD indicate both suspicious and authentic ingredients. The PADs project is a partnership between Saint Mary’s College and University of Notre Dame. The schools have jointly filed for two patents for the PADs. Example of PADs researcher/student: https://www.saintmarys.edu/feature/ Mary-Bevilacqua

Dance Marathon: Since students brought

Dance Marathon to the school in 2006, they’ve raised more than $610,000 for Riley. The hospital treats children from all over the state, including the South Bend area. Participants raise most of the funds through sponsors by pledging to stay on their feet for 12 hours and through the support of local businesses. It’s the largest student organization on campus. Students handle every detail of the event, which is open to the public. They book the entertainment, find business sponsors, get students excited to dance, and secure donations. It’s a great cause and a wonderful learning experience for them as they get ready to start their careers. Example of Dance Marathon students: https:// www.saintmarys.edu/dance-marathon-award

You are involved in some fantastic programs at Saint Mary’s that deal directly with women in business and advocating for women in business initiatives, tell us about them …

I serve as the communicator for the College about initiatives and projects that are going on at Saint Mary’s. Here are some of the projects that directly affect women outside of the confines of campus.

Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative:

In 2009, Saint Mary’s College received a $245,000 Small Business Administration grant to support women’s entrepreneurship programming in the South Bend community, which led to the creation of WEI. The initiative was developed through the collaborative efforts of the College’s Department of Business Administration and Economics (BUEC) and the staff of the Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL). WEI partners with community businesses, non-profits and organizations to provide a number of financial and business education services to women entrepreneurs. WEI is currently sponsored by KeyBank and its Key4Women program, 1st Source Bank, PNC Bank, NIPSCO, The Pokagon Fund, and individual donors. For information on WEI, go to https://wei.saintmarys.edu/

ing writer. When I look back at my jobs, each one prepared me for the one I have now, which I consider my dream job. I didn’t have a map and didn’t know where I was headed, but I just kept going. When I turned 40 and got this job, it all made sense.

Switching gears … What is your most proud moment as a parent?

How do I pick one? I have three kids. The common theme of my proudest moments are the times when evidence of the kids’ growing faith and understanding of Catholic teaching surfaces. Paige was recently asked to be the teen witness for the Christ Renews his Parish women’s retreat at St. Pius because others see that she lives her faith. In 4th grade, Grace cried in science class when she heard how trash dumped in the ocean is killing sea life. She asked the teacher, “But what about the Commandment “Thou Shall Not Kill?” And last fall, Jade, our budding engineer/artist, created a five-foot high crucifix out of a pile of wood scraps in the basement. We were shocked when she showed us what she had been working on for three hours. We hung it in a prominent place in our home. Photo Credit: Derby Photography

SPARK: Twice a year WEI puts an eleven-week entrepreneurship training

program for women in the Michiana community called SPARK. SPARK is intended to assist under-resourced, high-potential entrepreneurs to “spark” or launch successful businesses. So far a total of 52 women have participated. The program has SPARKed seven local micro businesses, including an import/export business, a daycare, a gift basket company, a beauty shop, a concierge service, and a real estate development enterprise. Three more women-owned businesses are set to launch in the next six months, including a dance studio, a daycare with a Montessori curriculum, and a transportation/taxi service in southwest Michigan. Thanks to a recent grant from Wells Fargo Bank, WEI is about launch SPARK for Women Visual Arts, transforming creative work into a solid business and turning passion into profit. This fall’s SPARK will include the traditional components and the visual arts component. It starts in September, For information, contact Martha Smith, WEI’s project director, at wei@saintmarys.edu.

The Status of Girls in Indiana: While this isn’t a business

initiative, it concerns the welfare of young women in the state, which affects our collective future. In September Saint Mary’s College will release a report titled The Status of Girls in Indiana. The report draws together publicly available statistics on Hoosier girls ages 10 to 19 years old. The report is topically arranged and covers demographics (income, race, housing, etc.), education (public/private, attendance, ISTEP performance, graduation rates, etc.), and health (physical activity, diet, substance and alcohol use, mental health, abuse, etc.). A team of faculty and students compiled the data and parsed it by gender so as to specifically examine the statistics related to girls. Assistant professor of mathematics Kristin Jehring Kuter led the project with her student Gina Deom ‘13. To our knowledge, no compilation of information specifically about Indiana girls has ever been undertaken before. We think it could be a valuable resource for organizations that advocate for the well being of young women in the state.

Words of advice for women climbing the ladders in the business world today? Since I work in a college setting, I’d like to offer advice to young women considering majors. If you see yourself as a working mother one day, what would your ideal daily life look like? Consider careers that offer flexible work schedules. Also, your first job doesn’t define who you are. It’s a step in the journey that will be your career. In my journey I was intentional in my job changes in that the next job had to be something I hadn’t done before. I went from TV reporter to weather caster to newspaper reporter to market-

What makes your family life unique or different from others?

We adopted Jade from China in 2004 when she was one year old. In my family, there are six kids and half of us are adopted (I’m biological). I tell people that adoption runs in our family. I have a sister, Meme, adopted from Vietnam. She’s the third born in my family. After we had Paige and Grace it seemed like someone was missing. I kept thinking of Meme. I kept running into a woman who had two blonde kids and a Chinese baby (she must have thought I was stalking her.) I prayed about it and felt Terry and I were being called to adopt and that our baby was in China.

How do you balance work/life balance?

When Terry and I talked about getting married, I told him that I wanted a 50-50 relationship. I planned to work, but that would mean that we would have to, together, care for the kids and tackle the work around the house. He’s never let me down. When our kids were young, I worked either part time or at night so we minimized child care. We treat the time we have together as special and do family activities like going to Silver Beach or a baseball game and we’ll spend an occasional weekend in Indianapolis or the Chicago area. Paige started working this summer, which is great, but at the beginning of the summer it felt like the family was out of sync and there was always one of us missing. I put my foot down one weekend and everyone cleared his or her schedules for three full days so we could spend quality time together. Sometimes you have to fight for family time.

ARTS

S e e i n g India One Panel at a Time

A

s we quickly walk the streets of Chicago on our way to see the new exhibit in the Art Institute of Chicago, Jessie LaFree explains her last few months of work as an artist and a student in the Windy City. She believes first-hand that experiences of culture and setting are an invaluable factor in her work as well as in her education. There is no doubt this young, ambitious woman wants people to experience the world by seeing her artwork. LaFree, a Northridge High School graduate, received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and a minor in German Language from Ball State University. After graduation, LaFree headed to Chicago to enroll as a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received her Masters of Architecture degree this past March. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago selected LaFree's thesis, work that was inspired by her travels to India last year, to be displayed in their Sullivan Galleries. During LaFree's time in India, she visited the sacred city of Varanasi on the banks of the Ganges River. “The bank of the Ganges River is four and a half miles long and is one of the most religious places in India,

24 July 2013 | SASSY

where millions of Hindu pilgrims come every year to experience darshan of the city’s deities, temples, Sadhus, and tirhas,” says LaFree. Darshan is Sanskrit for "sight". LaFree wants people to hold a deeper understanding of darshan. “You can tell people about what you saw, but you can’t explain it as well as someone visually seeing it,” says LaFree. When LaFree returned to her studio in Chicago, she created her thesis, The Ghats of Varanasi, presented as a 61 foot long piece assembled with 49 panels. Using the ghats as a platform, this work

represented a personal investigation of the ideas of space. “Drawing and embroidering became a way of studying the ghats, as well as a way of representing their space. Each line and stitch signifies a personal understanding and meaning of the architectural space,” explains LaFree. Her work was exhibited from June 8th – July 5th at the Sullivan Galleries. Having just begun her journey as an architect, LaFree already plans on an untraditional career. "I have a problem. I couldn’t sit in an office all day. I would like to take a roundabout way. I met with Stanely Tigerman, a famous American architect who also did not take a traditional route. He gave me the advice, 'Enjoy what you're doing or you won’t apply yourself.'” She plans to use that advice, as she returns to India this October to present an exhibit at Kriti Gallery in Varnasia. In January, LaFree will organize a show displaying The Ghats of Varanasi, embroidery, and another large piece inspired by her last trip to India. After her time in India, LaFree plans to apply to Princeton University or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to earn her PhD in the History, Theory and Criticsm of Architecture and Art. In addition to her plans for architecture, she also wants to continue her passion for travel. When asked where she would like to visit next, LaFree smiles and says, “Maybe Australia so I will have gone to all of the inhabited continents.” With the world on this girl’s side, there’s not too much that will stop her from accomplishing her goals.

advice from a business coach

Dear Charrise... Have a co-worker who’s driving you batty? A boss who just won’t listen to reason? Or maybe you’re wondering if this is your time to break out and show the business world what you’re really made of – but you don’t know exactly how to go about it. Sounds like you need some sound business advice! Send your questions to Charrise, our SASSY business coach, and have them answered here. It’s time to get a fresh perspective!

Email your questions to Chaunie@MichianaFamilyMagazine.com to have them answered by Coach Charrise!

I manage a small team of people at work, and we’ve been having weekly meetings since I was promoted to my manager position. My intention is to have everyone report in to the team each week to ensure we all know what’s going on. Lately, I’ve been getting poor attendance at these meetings; and even those who attend every week seem bored and distracted. I actually have one person who continually rolls their eyes during these meetings. How can I spice things up?

Charrise Says I think we’ve all worked in places where meetings were boring or nonproductive, or both. Let’s go back to the beginning, shall we? You stated that your purpose for the meeting is to “have everyone report in”. Can you create a more specific purpose, or format for the meeting? One formula for successful meetings is that everyone knows that their participation creates value for all, and therefore engages appropriately. Be sure your meeting has a well-defined purpose and that you communicate to everyone that they show up prepared to contribute. You may need to completely reinvent the way you approach your leadership of meetings. In order for them to work, they must be interesting. They must be a worthy way for each participant to spend their precious time. What if you decided who really needs to be there, rather than create a generic meeting that often has content that doesn’t apply to everyone? What if you promised that the meeting will end at a certain time, and stuck to that promise? What if you focused on just one thing for each meeting, and created shorter, topic specific meetings with only those necessary for that topic attending? Above all, leave your assumptions about meetings at the door. Sometimes we continue old patterns simply out of habit, without considering whether it still works. Rethink what you need to get accomplished with your team and get creative about ways to accomplish it. Your team will welcome a fresh approach and will likely want to be engaged in the reinvention. I’m considering opening a new business, and not sure I have what it takes to make it work. I know one thing for sure - I don’t want to fail. What are two or three traits I must have to be successful?

Charrise Says You’re in good company. Most people have doubts that they don’t have what it takes to succeed with a startup business. It’s actually not much different than the skill sets you need to live a successful life with or without owning your own business. If you live your life with integrity, positivity, and with a mission-driven attitude, you’re well on your way to having the character traits you need. Specifically for business, your ability to focus and exercise discipline are deal-breakers. You may not think you have the capacity for either focus or discipline. Let me assure you that when you are passionate about what you are creating, “focus” and “discipline” will show up. If they haven’t been around in the past, it’s likely because you weren’t compelled to dig deep enough to engage them. Without focus, you will spread your attention around too many things - and without discipline you will avoid doing the necessary hard stuff that you don’t want to do. Both of which will delay if not prevent success, potentially resulting in failure. Speaking of failure...the potential for failing in a new business is a reality, so you must have a high tolerance for risk and a willingness to endure small failures in order to achieve the success you seek. Sometimes the original business idea will morph into something you didn’t plan, based on what you learn as you navigate the process of meeting the market needs. Be willing to shift if necessary. Creating a successful startup also requires energy, passion, patience and the willingness to ask for help when you need it. The rewards are many, not the least of which is the sense of accomplishment that you have created something of service to the world.

Being a Well-Spoken Woman

Last summer, while I was on a long plane ride, I began a conversation with the woman seated next to me. She was a journalist and, as I’m a college composition instructor, we quickly found common ground in our love of words. Our discussion ranged from reading habits to celebrity gossip to what it means, today, for a person to be considered “well-spoken.”

“Well-spoken” may seem like an old-fashioned term, one that relies on outdated conceptions of formality, but I argue that it’s a concept we should revive in a modern context. Why? Well, consider this comment by author and entrepreneur Steve Strauss in a recent issue of the New York Times, addressing qualities he values in employees: “I like working with people who are bold, confident and who are willing to speak up. People who see problems and suggest solutions.” To me, Strauss is seeking well-spoken people: people who are knowledgeable, coherent, and effective. One woman who is clearly well spoken in this sense is Trudy Menke, an independent speaker, teacher and coach with the John Maxwell Team. Menke had a career in marketing and direct sales before she made the transition to one-on-one guidance and public speaking. A mother of two daughters, her conception of what it means to be a good speaker is complex and takes into account situation: “An effective public speaker makes the audience feel, at the same time, at ease with and connected to the speaker. There has to be a respect for the audience, and that’s often proved by seeing that 30 July 2013 | SASSY

the speaker knows as much as possible about the audience, finds ways to involve the audience and creates an experience worthy of their time.” No matter where we are, no matter with whom we speak, being articulate and persuasive is a universal asset.

In Dialogue

Speech is a broad term – one that can mean anything from talking to your neighbor, teaching a class or giving a public lecture in a hall. The concept of speaking well, even when in conversation with one other person, has been a matter of importance since classical times. For example, Plato’s Gorgias revolves around a dialogue between Socrates and an impulsive young man named Polus. Socrates tells Polus that their debate will come to an end successfully only when “I make you the one witness of my words” or vice versa. This means that Socrates can only have succeeded when he presents his case so clearly and convincingly that Polus would be willing to serve as a supporting witness to the quality

of Socrates’ idea. Essentially, one-on-one conversation becomes the main means of communication for Socrates, one of far more importance than a public speech. Polite conversation was a hallmark of the Victorian era as well, when a woman was only considered “accomplished” if she could carry on a lively, insightful conversation, particularly as conversation was often the only means of amusement available. The importance of being a fine conversationalist carried into the 1950s, when there were correspondence courses, such as one written by a woman named Ethel Cotton, all about how to be an engaging interlocutor. Cotton’s 1955 course booklets advise students to stay away from empty topics such as the weather. Rather, choose topics that matter, ones in which both parties can become invested. In this way, Cotton argues, conversation becomes a “game of social contact in which we toss ideas to and fro for the two-fold reward of pleasure and profit…Conversation is a sort of mental handball in which each player should have a great number of balls. Each ball, representing an idea, has the mystic power of bounding into any number of minds simultaneously... Conversation is thus a game in which no one who plays can lose.” However, Cotton contends, the game requires equipment: ideas, vocabulary, voice and diction. Menke’s priorities are quite similar. She emphasizes phrasing ideas carefully and clearly for the benefit of your interlocutor: “I believe that speaking to people even one-on-one with respect to business is still a form of public speaking when compared to speaking in social situations. Although the audience is often just an individual, the message is still an offer to inform or persuade, just as it is for a platform speaker.”

Holding Our Tongues

Knowing how to get the conversational ball rolling doesn’t assure a good conversation. “Raising two daughters (now 18 & 20), both my husband and I have encouraged them to use good communication as the key to understanding the people around them as well as being understood themselves. Of course, listening is as much a part of [the art of communication] as speaking,” reflects Menke. SASSY | July 2013

Breaking the Rules

But there are some moments when we are speaking to strangers, many of them, all at once, from a podium -- moments when real connection is impossible. Despite this, we still need to express an important message or sentiment. These are the situations that inspired Jerry Seinfield’s quip that statistics that showed more people were afraid of public speaking than death meant that more people at any given funeral would rather be in a casket than giving the eulogy. Practice, however, can alleviate some of these fears. Menke points out that “communication is a skill that can be improved and not just something you have to be born with.” Working with a coach like Menke or with a team such as the Toastmasters can help you develop or hone your skills. If you don’t have time for such preparation, remember to speak from general notes (not too specific, or you’ll sound robotic) and to practice on whatever audience is available. I find my dogs are particularly good test subjects.

Learning to listen is difficult, not just for little children who have so very much to say, but for adults as well. Yet the benefits are countless. After all, “while communication can be a one-way street, connection is always a two-way street that requires active listening in order to succeed,” says Menke. Admittedly, the skill of listening is becoming even more complex in a world characterized by mobile devices. After all, if the Greeks and Victorians particularly valued conversation because it was all they had for amusement, today we may devalue conversation because of an excess of distractions. Angry Birds may have been the death knell for the friendly chat. Think I’m exaggerating? Consider how modern technology actually trains us to listen only to what is literally in our ears – through headphones or cellphones. Plus, our habit of multi-tasking means that even when we have that converstion in our ears, we may also be sending e-mail or updating Facebook. Our attention is fractured rather than focused, and we may be losing the human connection that characterizes us as rational, social beings. Sherry Turkle, an advocate for device-free zones, implores us in a New York Times article to remember — “in between texts and e-mails and Facebook posts — to listen to one another, even to the boring bits, because it is often in unedited moments, moments in which we hesitate and stutter and go silent, that we reveal ourselves to one another.” Ultimately, that real human connection is what keeps us from being lonely.

Also, when you’re on stage, do your best to be heard. Speak loudly, but not so loudly that you strain your voice. Modulate (another old-fashioned concept) so that you aren’t shrieking or up-speaking. (Upspeaking, which is more common for female speakers, involves ending your sentences by raising your pitch, as we do when we ask questions or poorly imitate Irish accents. This habit at the end of a declarative statement, however, implies that your statements are questionable. Try this; say “I would like a raise,” but lift your pitch at the end. It doesn’t exude confidence, does it?) Menke also points out the importance of eye contact. Breaking or shifting eye contact away from your audience or interlocutor can make you seem uncertain or untrustworthy. Another way to appear professional and controlled is to retrain your movements and stand up straight. I’m not advising that you stand like a hat stand, but you also don’t want to look as though you started the day with eighteen shots of espresso. You can pull the old-political speech trick of focusing all your nervous energy into one tic rather than a few. For example, instead of twisting your hair, shifting from

foot to foot, and scratching your elbow, you can bend a small paperclip in one hand with your fingertips (a Clintonian go-to technique). This small movement won’t be nearly as distracting to the audience as all the others put together. With all this, let me make one warning – don’t lock your knees. I learned this during my one, unfortunate year in choir. If you lock your knees so that you can stand straight and not shift around, especially if you’re giving a speech, there’s a good chance you will pass out. These tips are helpful, but in the grand scheme of any kind of public speaking, these “rules” don’t really matter (except that last one). There’s really only one golden rule of communication: passion. The two greatest student evaluation comments I received after my first semester of teaching, a semester in which I often felt incompetent, was that I was enthusiastic about my subject and cared about my students. Similarly, when I look back to the most successful teachers and mentors I’ve had, when I reflect on the best speeches I’ve heard, it’s often the people who express themselves with conviction, not the ones who have the most intricate wordplay who are most memorable.

as to why I truly believe something would work or be worth the money,” Tracy says. “Anyone I have ever worked for will tell you I’m very passionate when I believe in something and I don’t back down. 3 Things Every Woman Should Know About Herself & Her Money

‘It’s a Relationship That’s Not Going Away,’ Advises Female Financial Expert By Luna Jaffe

I

f you’re a woman, chances are good that in the years ahead, it will be you and you alone who’s responsible for managing your money.

third said they know a lot about financial planning, and 30 percent said the same for investment management.

That could be a problem: Even among the very affluent, many women admit they know little to nothing about bigger-picture money concerns such as financial planning and investment management, according to a recent survey.

Part of the problem is that financial education is male-oriented, catering to how men’s brains are wired and what appeals to them, Jaffe says.

“A lot of women cede those responsibilities to their husbands or partners because they say they don’t have the time, interest or opportunity to learn,” says Luna Jaffe, Certified Financial Planner™, psychotherapist, and author of the new “Wild Money: A Creative Journey to Financial Wisdom” and its companion workbook, “Wild Money: A Financial Field Guide and Journal,” (www.lunajaffe.com). “Things are changing– more women are choosing not to marry or have been devastated by divorce or death of a loved one. They recognize they can’t ignore money anymore, but don’t know where to turn or who to trust.” But even women with a net worth of at least $1 million concede they aren’t especially knowledgeable about money management. In the Women & Wealth Study sponsored by GenSpring Family Offices, only a 34 July 2013 | SASSY

“When we approach it creatively and from a more emotion-based perspective, women are not only drawn to learning about it, they have no trouble getting it,” Jaffe says.

She offers these three things every woman should know about their relationship to money: • Your investment decisions are influenced by your emotional baggage. We all bring baggage into our relationships, and it’s no different with money, Jaffe says. When you’re not aware of the baggage operating quietly in the background, you may think you’re making smart decisions when you’re actually simply reacting to past experiences. And those might not have been even your own experiences! “Whether you or a loved one suffered the consequences of a bad financial investment, it can color your thinking in many ways, from destroying your confidence

in your judgment to writing off all similar investments as ‘bad.’ ’’ Take time to reflect on the experiences you’ve had with investing, the decisions you made, and the conclusions you made as a result. What stories do you tell yourself because of these experiences?

LOOK Before You Leap

the SASSY Guide to Entrepreneurship By Cyndy Searfoss

Entrepreneurship is part of the American DNA. Opening our own shop, starting our own business or becoming our boss are all part of the American dream. And some people, like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, score huge successes. They top the list of people whose innovative products changed how we experience the world.

Moore stresses the need for anyone who’s thinking about starting his or her own business to research, research, research. “Do your homework,” she said. “Find out everything you possibly can.” Her research included talking to someone out of state who had the same kind of business she wanted to start. “By reaching out to someone who wasn’t going to see me as a competitor, I was able to get all the ins and outs.”

But it takes more than hard work and a good idea to succeed as an entrepreneur. The statistics can be frightening – it’s estimated that 50-70% of all small businesses fail in their 18 months. Don’t let the numbers scare you away from following your dream or passion, though. A great idea, a well-researched plan and the ability to change as the business changes are keys to being a successful entrepreneur.

She offers her clients all the advantages of a relaxing massage – but rather than having to block out travel time and massage time, Moore makes it quick and convenient. She offers a variety of lengths, from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. “My customers like that they don’t have to get undressed or block out two hours to get the benefits of a good massage. “

Tammy Moore started Tammy’s Tune Up nine years ago. A certified massage therapist, Moore specializes in providing in-office (or inhome) chair massages in Elkhart, Osceola, Mishawaka and South Bend. It is her third business. “I learned a lot from starting the other two,” she noted. “This is a unique business and that has certainly helped.”

Despite the economic downturn of the past few years, Moore’s business has been steady, due greatly to her sensitivity to her customers’ perception of the price/value relationship for her services. “I haven’t raised my prices in seven years,” she said. “When you have a business like this – which is a luxury for some

people – you have to be very careful about raising your prices. You don’t want to price yourself out of business.” For Kevin Quarandillo, opening Revolution Salon in downtown Elkhart allowed him to bring his vision of a salon that offered organic hair products and ammonia-free coloring to life in an environment that customers enjoying coming back to. “I enjoyed creating this environment,” he said, gesturing around his salon. “It was about having a vision, an idea and then implementing it. As the business has grown, I’ve been able to stay true to that vision while learning to be flexible.” He emphasized that small business owners have to walk the fine line between keeping the core things that makes their business unique in place while be willing to implement new ideas that keep customers satisfied. He also noted that, “you will make mistakes… you make a decision and move forward. When you make a mistake, you learn from it and go on.” Both Moore and Quarandillo stressed the fact that as a business owner you have to be prepared for the fact that working life can be very different. “There is no paid vacation, no sick time, no paid health insurance,” Moore noted. “The one thing I would probably do differently is start saving for retirement earlier.” Then there’s the fact that as the owner you are the person ultimately responsible for all the details, from making sure taxes for filed on time, that any licensing and permits are kept up to date, that vendors are paid and that customers are happy. Taking care of those, especially for a oneperson business, can extend the work week far beyond the usual 40 hours. Even taking that into account, though, Quarandillo said, “There isn’t a downside to owning a business. If you have a good idea, a passion for something, don’t be afraid to go for it.”

Advice from Area Execs

S

assy Magazine and the Renaissance Executive Forums are pleased to bring you our new monthly column The Sassy Executive Forum. Each month we will have a featured business question that will be answered by female executives to help guide you in your own business endeavors.

This article is provided by Executive Forums which helps executives achieve their goals and reduce risk by providing input from a confidential team of their peers and tools from thought leaders. For information, contact them at 574.243.0175 or visit their website: www.ExecutiveForums.com.

This Month's Question:

What advice would you give to someone who was contemplating going into business with their spouse?”

Andrea rogers President,Grass Roots Media. Andrea and Donnie Rogers founded Grass Roots Media in 1992 when they saw a need in this community for effective, creative video production that takes advantage of the latest technology. Over the years they’ve helped their clients win awards, expand their businesses and connect with their audiences. Grass Roots Media specializes in marketing, promotional and educational videos, plus TV and radio commercials. They have a full-time staff of six with decades of experience helping clients communicate effectively through video.

Answer: Good communication is our most important tool for keeping our business and partnership on track. It’s not as easy as it sounds and we don’t get this right all the time. What counts is our commitment to working on it. We decided long ago that our marriage is more important than our business. One is expendable. The other is not. Keeping our commitment to each other in the forefront of our minds has gotten us through lots of personal and professional challenges. The hardest part of this dual partnership for me is leaving work at work. The stakes are so high when running a business and it’s much too easy for me to take it home. I rely on Donnie to set a great example for me in this area.

Karen Kemp Executive VP of SCI Alarm

Do you know what it takes for a local security company to stay in business for 32 years? You provide the best products, installation, and service to your customers, and that's what we do at SCI Alarm.

Answer: Some of the perils of running a company with a spouse are obvious: Carrying problems from home into the office, and carrying business problems home. The cure is simple: Don't do it. This comes under the category of easy problem/easy cure /difficult to implement. It will be one of the hardest things you never did. The greater problems require superhero efforts to avoid. My personal favorite: too many chiefs and not enough indians. Unless you each have a specific part of the operation that YOU are responsible for, and the lines are clearly drawn, you will continually be subverting the other partners efforts. Here is where superior parenting skills come in. You either need a clear boss and only one boss, or a clear division of responsibilities. And, this is the most important thing, you always present a united front. Your employees, like your children, will become skilled in working one partner against the other to their benefit. Have a trusted business associate to act as an ombudsman when differences arise. If you are asking yourself which is more important, the business or the marriage, I can tell you that it is the marriage. If one spouse has to leave the business to save the marriage, I can almost assure you again, that this will save the business as well.

Friendfluence: The Surprising Ways Friends Make Us Who We Are By: Carlin Flora Reviewed by Melissa Hunt, References Services Coordinator, Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library Read Friendfluence to help discover how your friends– not your family– helped shape who you are. Discover the many ways friends can help shape our personalities, choices, emotions and even health in this fun examination of friendship by Flora. Why is a meal with a friend often less anxious and frustrating than a family meal? Is it because we can choose our friends and not our family, or are expectations for the two groups the deciding factor? Evolutionary psychologists have long theorized that friendship has roots in our early dependence on others for survival. Today, we cherish friends but tend to undervalue their role in our lives. However, the skills needed to make good friends are among the skills that lead to success in life. Scientific evidence suggests that at times friends have a greater hand in our development and well-being than do our romantic partners and family. Friends get each other through the growing up years, shape each other’s interests and expose our unpleasant characteristics. Childhood and adolescence can be marked with the need to create distance between oneself and family while creating a unique identity within a group of peers. Friends can influence us in a variety of ways and at all ages. Friendfluence surveys online pals, friend breakups, the power of social networks, peer pressure, the dark side of amicable ties, and many other varieties of friendships. Told with warmth, scientific rigor and a dash of humor, Friendfluence not only illuminates the science but draws on psychology and philosophy to help readers evaluate and navigate their own important friendships.
