CHAIR MESSAGE
This summer has certainly been full of fun, but for many, there was great difficulty. These challenges highlighted communities working together to help each other in times of need. Now that summer is ending, it is a time to look forward to the rhythm of school, harvest and hunting.
Even though school wasn’t in session, there was no lack of education this summer! Our Executive Director, Denise Hanzlik traveled to many of our cities and towns presenting “Managing Your Rentals”. The educational sessions were engaging and impactful!
In May we learned about changes to the eviction process in the State of South Dakota effective July 1, 2024. We continue to learn about how this affects management companies and tenants alike.
In June several of our board and association members attended NAA’s Apartmentalize in Philadelphia. It was filled with new ideas, resources and education for every attendee. There was a strong focus on innovations in the industry and trends in the market. It broadened the view of all who were there.
Looking forward, we have the Black Hills Education Blitz in Rapid City in September and the State Convention in Sioux Falls in October. If you are looking for personal growth, you may consider an additional certification or leadership training with CAM – Certified Apartment Manager course or the Leadership Lyceum.
Details of all events can be found at https://www.sdmha.com/events.
It is the goal of SDMHA to help you gain the connections and information you need to succeed in all that you do. These things would never happen without every member, associate member, volunteer, board member and our Executive Director, Denise Hanzlik. Thank you for all that you do!
We hope you had a safe and fun summer and look forward to seeing you at our next event!
Thank you!
LIVABLE SMART TIP
As temperatures begin to dip, think about easy ways you can cut back on the heating bills in your properties. Caulk gaps around windows to reduce drafts. Put programmable thermostats in the common area so you can account for temperature fluctuations and daytime hours when tenants are typically away from the property. Clean HVAC filters every few months, so the system doesn’t have to work as hard to be effective. If your property has a basement or attic, make sure they are insulated. For a bigger investment, consider replacing single-pane windows with double-pane. Up to a quarter of a property’s heat loss can be attributed to windows. Looking for more ways to save? LIVABLE SMART TIP
Fall is here and along with all those changing leaves and pumpkin spice lattes comes a host of maintenance activities. Luckily, Buildium has a great fall checklist to make sure you’ve thought about everything from termites to clearing away brush and branches before the colder winter months descend.
