For 120 years, Mahlander’s Appliance & Lighting has occupied a rare space not only in Sioux Falls, but in the nation as a whole: a retail business that survived generational change, economic swings, and the rise of big-box competitors, while remaining deeply woven into the fabric of the city itself.

Founded in 1906, three local businessmen formed Electric Construction Company to wire commercial projects and homes across Sioux Falls. As electricity made its way into everyday life, so did Mahlander’s, gradually evolving from electrical contracting into the retail appliances and lighting showroom that locals know today.

In the years after World War II, when electric appliances began entering American homes en masse, it didn’t take long for the original Phillips Avenue storefront to fill with appliances of all types. By the early 1970s, the company moved to its longtime home at 8th Street and Minnesota Avenue, adding expansive lighting displays and décor while becoming the local appliance and lighting authority for homeowners and contractors alike.

Rosie Kindt has watched much of that story unfold from the inside. A Sioux Falls resident since the early 1970s, Rosie has spent more than 30 years working at Mahlander’s, and her pride in the business is unmistakable.

“It’s fun. I have a lot of pride in Mahlander’s,” Rosie says. “It’s a good business, and Mahlander’s has a long, proud history.”

That history, she explains, is not abstract; Mahlander’s is in the bones of the city itself. “They started wiring the city, commercial projects, and many of the homes in Sioux Falls, including a lot of the historical homes,” Rosie shares. “It’s really been an integral part of the community since the beginning.”

Even today, that sense of continuity shows up in small but telling ways. Decades-long customers routinely return with their own adult children, making Mahlander’s a family tradition. Jessica Evans, who joined the company last spring after owning her own lighting business, says she sees those generational ties almost daily.

Jessica can recall a young couple who stopped in only because another store was closed. “They stated, ‘Our parents have always shopped here, so we thought we’d come in.’ And as they were walking out, they remarked, ‘We’re so glad we came in. We just had everything taken care of.’”

The showroom carries many of the same brands at prices customers might find elsewhere, but the experience is fundamentally different. Rather than navigating 10 n February 2026

aisles alone or relying on undertrained staff, customers are met by a team whose combined experience stretches across decades.

“There are lifelong customers here,” Jessica says. “People come in, and they know our sales team. They go back decades.”

That help often extends well beyond the point of sale. Mahlander’s offers free local delivery, in-house repair and service, and hands-on troubleshooting that big chains don’t want to provide. Rosie laughs that almost daily, someone from the appliance department can be found on the phone, walking a customer through programming, maintenance, or troubleshooting. “Our people know and can actually help the customers,” she says.

Mahlander’s dedication to its customers is what drew Jessica in the first place.

“Mahlander’s will do things for customers that you don’t normally get done at other companies,” Jessica notes. “If you need extra chain added to a light fixture, or if you have a certain ceiling height, they’ll make it happen. If you need it, they’ll figure out a way to do it.”

Her arrival also coincides with a pivotal moment in Mahlander’s long story. After more than a century under family ownership, the company was sold four years ago by its fourth-generation owner to partners with decadeslong relationships to the business. The transition preserved what Rosie and Jessica describe as the company’s family feel, while opening the door to a more intentional strategy for the future.

Part of Jessica’s role now is making sure the next generation knows the value Mahlander’s offers. That includes shifts in advertising, broader community outreach, and being more visible in new spaces without abandoning the values that built the business in the first place.

“We want to keep that core of helping the customer,” Jessica explains. “It’s not first about the sale. It’s first about helping the customer. You can buy that appliance online, and then you get it, and it’s not what you thought,” she says. “But when you come into the store, our sales team knows the products, teaches you about them, answers questions after the purchase, and makes sure it goes smoothly.

For Rosie, that layered care is what has made three decades at Mahlander’s not just possible, but deeply satisfying. “We’ve always tried to have fun with our customers,” she recalls. “I remember helping someone with a lamp, and we were laughing, and they said, ‘I can’t believe I had this much fun buying a lamp.’”

After 120 years, Mahlander’s continues to differentiate itself not through scale, but through people: people who know the city, know the products, and know their customers well enough to turn a routine purchase into a relationship.

As Jessica looks ahead, her aim is not to reinvent Mahlander’s, but to carry that legacy forward into a changing retail landscape, ensuring Sioux Falls’ next generation of homeowners knows what so many before them have discovered.

“Come see what’s inside,” Jessica affirms.

Enticing four growing boys to skip screen time in favor of playtime is easier when there’s a double-hoop basketball court at home.

One family was so determined to encourage physical recreation over computer and TV time that their luxury home is designed to keep the entire family active. The homeowners hired McCoy Construction to build their distinctive home at 27094 Misty Brook Place in Harrisburg.

This unique home includes a 3,600-square-foot garage with a dedicated basketball court. “Installing a gym floor and basketball court was new for McCoy Construction,” owner Chad McCoy explains.

“One-third of the garage is parking, and the rest is the gym. It’s a commercial-grade gym floor. The product itself was different than anything we’ve installed,” Chad notes. “We had to shrink the court’s center line; it’s not quite full length. The homeowner was very much involved in all of the decisions. It was a fun process to get to go through that with him.”

Recreation and entertaining are the heart of this 3-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home, which has a modern-meets-vintage barn aesthetic inside and out.

A hand-framed roof and timber frame, with wood, brick, wainscoting and stone accents, create a welcoming front entrance and exterior.

“The homeowner wanted a winding driveway 500 feet long to give a unique look, and there’s a turnaround so if you have guests, they have a place to turn around,” Chad continues. “We widened it a few different times to where, if you meet another car, you could pass there.”

The backyard is a haven for entertaining, with an in-ground pool surrounded by a patio and seating area. The patio includes a gas line for a grill and electricity.

“If they wanted to work on their laptop during the day, or they’re looking to charge a phone or something like that, it’s a nice retreat,” Chad states.

Indoors, the main floor of this 3,146-square-foot home is designed for hosting, cooking, and relaxing.

“The four-sided floor-to-ceiling fireplace anchors the open-concept living room, kitchen and dining room. The gas fireplace’s surround is created from dry stack natural stone, which doesn’t use mortar. Every stone is cut precisely to fit together,” Chad shares.

In the living-dining room, glass windows and sliding doors offer a clear view of the pool and trees beyond, bringing a bit of outdoor beauty indoors.

The vintage farmhouse-meets-modern style aesthetic continues in the kitchen, which is accented by a copper sink, open shelving, and wooden accents on the pantry door and one of the two kitchen islands.

Two islands met the homeowners’ request for room for entertaining and seating, as well as plenty of prep space for cooking.

The master suite is a cozy retreat highlighted by a painted wall that’s a McCoy Construction specialty. The bedroom accent wall is covered with 2-foot by 2-foot wooden squares.

“We were finish carpenters before starting McCoy Construction, and we try to include a lot of that into our builds,” Chad notes.

A small European-style wood-burning stove was intentionally chosen to enhance the master bedroom without overheating it.

A mudroom, laundry room and adjoining bathroom are the catch-all and clean-up space on the main floor.

Upstairs, a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom loft with a wide hallway overlooks the main living area below. Instead of wood or metal handrails, the homeowners opted for glass. These provide an unobstructed view of the downstairs and outdoors.

“The homeowners chose the glass,” Chad states, “because they have a foosball table upstairs and wanted a barrier that would prevent balls from falling from the loft to the living area below.”

A built-in dry bar in the upstairs hallway is a convenient place to stash water and beverages for the kids and their friends.

This home was built on an unique, narrow lot that bordered on both sides by lots of trees. McCoy Construction intentionally situated the house on the lot so it faces away from the nearby highway. The trees create the illusion that the home sits in its own forested area.

The lot also has a grass field the homeowners plan to use for soccer and other outdoor activities. The trees and field create an attractive, serene view beyond the pool in the backyard.

McCoy Construction has been building homes in the greater Sioux Falls area since 2017. Distinctive houses with one-of-a-kind designs are McCoy Construction’s favorite types of projects.

“Our goal is to never build the same house twice, and if we do, we try to make it look completely different, even if the layout is the same,” Chad states.

Hard Hat Fun Ahead! The Home Builders Association, in partnership with Builders FirstSource, is excited to invite kids and families to the Kids Building Zone at this year’s Home Show!

This is where creativity meets construction and little hands get to do some big building. Kids will step into the role of a real builder as they design and build their very own wooden toolbox to take home. It’s hands-on, it’s exciting, and it’s the kind of project that sparks big smiles and even bigger confidence.

This isn’t just an activity, it’s an experience. Skilled builders from across the Sioux Empire, along with members of our Home Builders Student Chapters, will be on hand to work one-on-one with kids, offering guidance, encouragement, and a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to build for a living. Along the way, kids will learn new skills, use real tools, and discover just how fun building can be.

Thanks to the support of Builders FirstSource, the Kids Building Zone is FREE with paid adult admission to the Sioux Empire Home Show. It’s the perfect opportunity to introduce kids to the world of construction, craftsmanship, and the skilled trades, all while having a blast.

So, bring your future builder, roll up those sleeves, and get ready to build memories that last. The Kids Building Zone is where imagination, teamwork, and craftsmanship come together, one toolbox at a time!

As you move through the exhibit, you’ll see how Hebron Brick Supply sets the foundation for bold expression with beautifully crafted pavers, stonework, and masonry features that define gathering spaces and anchor the design. These materials create the perfect backdrop for an inviting outdoor kitchen, a cozy fire pit, and thoughtfully placed outdoor furniture designed for entertaining and relaxing alike.

Granberg Landscaping enhances these strong architectural elements with layered plantings, natural textures, and intentional flow, transforming structure into a welcoming outdoor sanctuary. A stylish pergola adds shade and architectural interest, helping define the space while creating an ideal atmosphere for everything from quiet evenings to lively get-togethers.

Completing the experience is a stunning pool and hot tub installation by AAA Pools & Construction, seamlessly integrated into the overall design. Their craftsmanship demonstrates how water features can elevate outdoor living, serving as both a visual focal point and a functional centerpiece for relaxation, entertaining, and everyday enjoyment.

Every detail within The Signature Outdoor Experience has been carefully considered to show how outdoor spaces can be tailored to reflect how people live, gather, and unwind. From cooking and dining outdoors to lounging by the fire or soaking in the hot tub, this Feature Exhibit highlights how outdoor living can be both highly functional and deeply personal.

Whether you’re actively planning an outdoor project or simply gathering inspiration, this Feature Exhibit invites you to explore, ask questions, and imagine the possibilities. RUSTIC WARMTH, MODERN LIVING

C-Lemme Companies specializes in building beautiful, energy-efficient luxury homes designed to significantly reduce wintertime heating costs.

The custom home at 5505 E. Daybreak Circle exemplifies C-Lemme Companies’ commitment to maximizing comfort, style, and energy efficiency year-round.

“What we tried to do with this home is focus heavily on energy efficiency and energy rating,” states Joel Ingle, general manager of C-Lemme Companies in Sioux Falls. “We did a professional energy rating on the home and really focused on how to build a super-efficient, airtight home.”

C-Lemme aims to construct homes that qualify for Energy Star ratings, which evaluate factors including insulation and strategic window placement to enhance airtightness while maximizing natural light. Homes meeting Energy Star standards achieve 30% to 50% greater energy efficiency than average homes, providing a substantial benefit for cost-conscious homeowners.

“In the fall and winter seasons, you want the house to pick up heat from sunlight,” Joel explains. “We focus heavily on making sure we’re taking advantage of every energy gain we possibly can, including higher-efficiency HVAC systems and on-demand water heaters. Things like that cut down the energy and utility bills every month.”

Accessibility distinguishes this 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom home. Its front entry features level, stair-free access, and three main-level bedrooms that can accommodate individuals with disabilities.

“We prefer to build zero-entry homes so when you walk in, there are no steps to climb. It’s a more comfortable way to build a home,” Joel notes.

The result is a residence that combines livability with exceptional design appeal.

This ranch-style home encompasses 3,234 finished square feet. Richly toned rustic wood flooring, custom cabinetry, and innovative wood accents complement the serene neutral palette throughout the main level and inviting garden-level basement.

“We try to be more Craftsman-style and flood the house with natural light. We brighten up interior finishes with painted trim and warm it up with wood finishes,” Joel adds.

An open-concept living room, dining room, and kitchen anchor the main level. The gas fireplace, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling natural stone, provides an ideal gathering space during crisp fall and winter evenings. A nearby glass door opens to a low-maintenance covered deck with stairs to the backyard.

The dramatic focal point is the barnwood ceiling above the stained hickory kitchen island, illuminated by low-voltage LED accent lighting.

“It’s made to look antique. It’s a pine barn wood-style ceiling,” Joel states. “We see the trends and what’s happening on Pinterest, and we just have to be creative and put together an idea to stand out. People like the contrast of the white finish millwork with the wood tones in the ceiling and floors to warm it up.”

The main-level master suite offers a peaceful retreat, featuring a walk-in closet and double-vanity bathroom with heated tile floors, a custom-tiled zero-entry shower, and under-cabinet LED lighting.

The basement serves as the ultimate entertainment space. A barn-wood ceiling with integrated lighting highlights the 20-by-26-foot family room, which features a natural stone gas fireplace at one end and a built-in wet bar with a full-sized refrigerator at the other. Two bedrooms with walk-in closets and a full bathroom complete the lower level.

The oversized 3-car garage includes gas heating, epoxy flooring, LED lighting, and built-in cabinetry, providing ample space for vehicles, a workshop, or storage. The landscaped yard features sod, an irrigation system, and newly planted trees.

Located in southeast Sioux Falls, within a mile of Dawley Farms, shopping, medical offices, and restaurants, this home sits on one of the last parcels in the Sioux Falls School District.

“The customer is our priority,” Joel affirms. “Our job is to make sure we keep them on schedule and on budget because it’s their money we’re responsible for. We’re trying to do the best we can to do things right and produce solid, smartly built homes.”

STANDING ON SOLID GROUND

When it comes to protecting a home, few elements are as critical as the foundation beneath it. Blackburn Foundation Repair has built its reputation on experience, transparency, and long-term solutions that give homeowners concrete peace of mind when issues arise with their home investments.

Founded in 1992, Blackburn Foundation Repair has served South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming for over three decades, helping homeowners address both routine and unexpected foundation issues and basement waterproofing needs.

“We have a long history of success. Our core values are customer-first, and we make sure that we take care of the customers because our reputation means everything to us,” adds Zac Appletoft, Director of Sales and Service.

That reputation of trust and confidence is amplified by the over 1,000 5-star reviews the company has received, and every customer that trusts Blackburn Foundation Repair. Each project that Blackburn tackles is completed by in-house, trained professionals, ensuring consistent quality and accountability from start to finish, and aligning with their core values.

“We have never contracted any work out,” Zac explains. “It makes it better for us because we know that the work is up to our standards, and we don’t have to go running after a third party. We train everyone to make sure that the work gets done right.”

That commitment extends beyond the repair process. Blackburn offers warranties on its services, reassuring homeowners that their investment is protected long after the job has been completed.

“All of our concrete products have a 5-year warranty. Our radon products have a 10-year warranty, and our foundation projects have a lifetime transferable warranty,” Zac notes. “That peace of mind helps a homeowner say, ‘Okay, I have a warranty for this in a company that isn’t going anywhere.’ We are only growing.”

BEFORE AFTER AFTER

Another advantage is the company’s customer-focused approach. Foundation issues can feel overwhelming, especially for homeowners unfamiliar with structural repairs. Blackburn emphasizes education and clear communication, walking customers through the inspection process, recommended solutions, and expected outcomes so there are no surprises.

Blackburn Foundation Repair brings extensive knowledge of soil conditions across Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, allowing the team to tailor solutions to each home’s unique needs. The company provides free, full inspections before making any recommendations and places a strong emphasis on educating homeowners. With detailed consultations, customers are guided through the findings and proposed solutions, ensuring they understand their options, whether or not they choose to move forward with repairs.

“We want them to be very involved in a process where a lot of people don’t know what to do,” Zac adds. “We are there when we say we are.”

Understanding that foundation repairs can be a significant financial decision, Blackburn Foundation Repair also offers financing options. This flexibility allows homeowners to address urgent structural concerns without delaying repairs due to upfront costs.

“It is a big, unexpected project for homeowners, and that’s why we offer financing,” Zac shares. “People who have no other means to pay for these things can get this work done.”

With decades of experience, knowledge, warranties, and customer-first values, Blackburn Foundation Repair continues to be a trusted choice for homeowners seeking reliable foundation solutions.

Kitchen Remodel Checklist: A Practical Guide

Before embarking on a kitchen remodeling project, it is essential to have a welldefined plan in place. Without proper planning, you risk wasting valuable time and money, and the final result may fall short of your expectations.

The following guidelines will help you remain efficient and organized throughout your kitchen renovation, enabling you to create the kitchen you envision.

Develop a Comprehensive Plan

Kitchen remodeling ranks among the most sought-after home improvement projects, yet it comes with significant challenges. Homeowners must navigate the search for reliable contractors, keep costs from spiraling beyond their budget, locate quality materials, adapt to unforeseen complications, adhere to project deadlines, and commit to final design choices, all while managing the disruption to their daily lives.

Begin by creating a detailed checklist that includes your budget and objectives. Consider what outcome you want and which improvements matter most. Assess your kitchen’s current functional challenges. Perhaps you need more counter space, better storage, or aesthetic updates like new colors, appliances, or flooring.

Document all desired changes and gather inspiration from Pinterest, online guides, and renovation magazines. Organize items into “Essential” and “Desired” categories to help with budget decisions. Establish your total budget and allocate funds across categories like flooring, appliances, and materials.

Optimize Storage Solutions

Maximizing storage is crucial for an organized, functional kitchen. Insufficient storage creates cramped, cluttered spaces.

Use creative approaches to optimize space. Extend overhead cabinets to the ceiling to increase capacity and eliminate dust-collecting surfaces. Reevaluate organizational systems. For example, remove countertop knife blocks by installing magnetic wall strips instead. If pots and pans occupy too much cabinet space, install an overhead rack above your kitchen island for easy access.

Upgrade Counter Surfaces

If countertops look worn or outdated, consider replacing them. Choose appropriate materials. Smooth granite or marble offers durability and easy maintenance without tile grout lines that require regular professional cleaning. While stainless steel

provides a modern look, it scratches easily, potentially compromising your kitchen’s appearance. Research local suppliers for options matching your budget and style preferences.

Enhance Lighting

Proper lighting impacts both functionality and ambiance. Install LED strip lighting or compact fixtures beneath cabinets to illuminate work surfaces during meal preparation. Evaluate natural light sources, noting that ample natural light creates a spacious atmosphere. Consider attractive window treatments like white shutters for privacy and aesthetic appeal.

Remove Outdated Elements and Install Modern Features

Identify items needing replacement, such as old sinks, cabinets, or appliances. Explore various materials and styles. For example, cement vessel sinks feature waterproof, scratch-resistant coatings for long-lasting durability.

When selecting replacements, prioritize products that are energy-efficient to reduce long-term costs. Emphasize functionality by choosing chairs that fit beneath your kitchen island to maximize floor space, and install custom storage systems tailored to your specific needs.

Upgrade Flooring Materials

Kitchen flooring experiences significant wear over time. Consider durable materials like natural stone that withstand heavy traffic while maintaining appearance.

As you implement changes, maintain a cohesive design vision, ensuring each element complements your overall aesthetic and functional goals. Successful kitchen remodeling requires careful planning and systematic implementation. Following these guidelines will help you maintain efficiency, organization, and budgetary discipline throughout the process.
