Where Warmth Meets Style: The Fireplace Reimagined

As autumn deepens and evenings turn cool, there’s an undeniable draw toward warmth, not just heat, but the kind that fills a room with calm and connection. Today’s fireplaces capture that perfectly. With their sleek designs, quiet efficiency, and effortless control, they’ve evolved from a practical necessity into the emotional centerpiece of the modern home.

Gone are the smoky hearths of the past. Now, fireplaces offer a clean, elegant glow that fits seamlessly into any style, urban or rustic, minimalist or traditional. Gas and electric options bring instant ambience with the touch of a button, their light reflecting softly on stone, tile, or glass. It’s less about tending flames and more about creating atmosphere, a sense of stillness and comfort that makes a space feel truly lived in.

In today’s home designs, fireplaces have become key architectural features, defining open spaces and creating natural gathering points. A streamlined linear fireplace can anchor a modern layout, while a double-sided installation extends that warmth to outdoor living areas. However it’s integrated, the fireplace remains a powerful design element that turns a house into a true retreat.

So, whether you’re dreaming of a cozy living room centerpiece or a sleek, modern statement, the right fireplace can completely transform how your home feels. And when you’re ready to take that next step, we have the people who can bring your vision to life.

COZY Reimagined

The coziest gift you can give your home and your family this holiday season is a fireplace makeover. If you’re dreaming of relaxing by a crackling fire this winter, or having a mantle for hanging Christmas stockings, now is the time to call Fireplace Professionals.

According to Fireplace Professionals, November is the perfect time for fireplace renovation projects before holiday entertaining begins. Based in Sioux Falls, Fireplace Professionals has the region’s largest fireplace showroom that includes a vast selection of fireplaces, stoves, inserts, and surrounds, where customers can explore design style options and feel the quality materials they could have on their fireplace.

Fireplace Professionals also serves the entire state of South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota. When the weather turns cooler, general manager Tony Leggett notes that the change of seasons inspires many locals to consider fireplace makeovers or upgrades.

“A fireplace is something that is a respite in the winter, during those times when going outside isn’t as welcoming,” Tony adds. “A fireplace is a place to relax around, but it doesn’t have to look the same every year.”

A new mantle and surround can transform the aesthetic of a fireplace. Even small changes can improve a fireplace’s appearance, such as updating glass doors on a wood-burning fireplace. Swapping shiny brass for a modern style of metal trim and updating screens can give an existing fireplace a makeover.

“There’s a lot to choose from in that regard,” Tony shares. “We can really transform the look of your fireplace just by changing the glass doors.”

Even the sizes of some fireplaces can be changed to fit your style or your family’s needs. When it comes to design, Fireplace Professionals welcomes customers’ creativity.

“A fireplace is generally somewhat of a dramatic statement for a room in the first place. It’s somewhat of a focal point,” Tony notes. “Many people look at the rest of the room and see if the fireplace complements the room that it’s in or if it needs to be changed so that it will complement the room.”

If a fireplace surround hasn’t been changed in a few decades, the shell of the fireplace can be used, and the surround can get a makeover. Some materials, like stone and brick, are timeless, but perhaps you’re ready to upgrade yours. A traditional brick fireplace, for example, can be transformed in multiple ways. Brick can be painted, or covered with stone, sheetrock, stucco, or other surfaces, for example.

“There’s a zillion ideas without even changing the brick,” Tony explains.

Inspiration for fireplace styles can come from Fireplace Professionals’ showroom, houses on the local Parade of Homes, home decorating television shows, magazines, decorating websites, and blogs. “Taking pictures of your fireplace and asking artificial intelligence can give you ideas, too,” Tony states.

“The sky’s the limit in terms of what can be done. Let your mind go wild,” he affirms. “What a lot of people have been doing for a few years is getting on Pinterest, Instagram, or even Google images and finding ideas online that make sense to them.”

“If people bring in an idea like that to us, we’ve got something to work with. Don’t be afraid to bring any crazy ideas. We’ll think they’re fun,” Tony adds.

While you’re giving your fireplace’s appearance a makeover, consider changing the way it functions so it’s more energy efficient and effortless to use. Perhaps you want the ease of a remote-controlled electric or gas insert instead of a wood-burning fireplace. Electric or gas inserts can modernize or upgrade fireplaces.

“Maybe you want to change the way you use the fireplace, make the fireplace capable of doing more for the room,” Tony shares. “You can keep the look of the old fireplace or the spot where it used to

be and turn it into a high-efficiency fireplace with a fan on it and one that will extract as much heat from the fuel you’re burning as possible. They’re usually around 80 percent efficient and allow you to turn the flames up and down. They’re so user-friendly. You can set them on a thermostat.”

If you’re keeping and upgrading a wood-burning fireplace or installing a new one, do research about good seasoned firewood and the best fire starters to use. When decorating for the holidays, remember to keep items that can burn easily, such as those made of wood, paper, or plastic, three feet or more from the face of the fireplace, Tony said, and avoid throwing wrapping paper onto fireplaces.

After you’ve decided on the changes you want to make, fireplace transformations often can be completed in a day, Tony notes.

Fireplace Professionals offers customers more than 35 years of expertise. From expert installation to precise repairs, the company’s technicians bring years of hands-on expertise to every project.

“Pre-planning is the big thing, to have someone come do that ahead of time, but the actual installation is pretty non-invasive,” Tony states. “The installation process can be as short as a morning

if all the materials are chosen, and many times by afternoon, we’re all finished.”

“Especially if they’re new to the home, make sure you have a few practice fires (whether gas, electric, or wood-burning) just to make sure it’s working properly. If you have any questions or reservations about the fireplace you’re using, call us. That’s what we’re here for,” Tony affirms.

Nestled within The Shores on Lake Lorraine, the luxury twin townhome at 2722 S. Oriya Place offers a stunning blend of privacy and customization with the convenience and community of townhome living. This sophisticated residence redefines “having it all,” bringing together the pleasures of a lake house and the amenities of city life in one exceptional package.

Crafted by the skilled hands of Krumvieda Companies and their talented team of subcontractors, this modern multi-level home encompasses 3,543 square feet and boasts four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and an array of distinctive features that set it apart in the Sioux Falls market.

Lake Lorraine and the surrounding twin homes are part of a vibrant neighborhood that’s flourished in recent years. The spring-fed lake’s water is clean and clear, appealing to paddle boarders and kayakers, while neighborhood residents enjoy walking paths around the lake and access to bike trails.

Aaron Krumvieda, President of Krumvieda Companies, explains the vision: “The whole community is planned as a live, eat, work, and play type of development, with access to bike trails, pocket parks, and commercial amenities like restaurants, health care, and groceries. You name it, it’s there.” The neighborhood offers convenient access to medical care, grocery stores, restaurants, boutique shops, and easy routes to interstates and the airport.

The architectural design of this unique twin home is defined by its classic and contemporary luxury style with intricate details and varied textures spanning from the foundation to the rooflines. A harmonious exterior, adorned with EIFS brick, wood accents, and black steel balconies and window trim, extends a warm and modern ambiance that captures attention from every angle.

As you step inside, you’re greeted by the warmth and elegance of white oak wood floors that flow seamlessly throughout the main living areas. The interior features a mixture of wallpaper and traditional painted millwork, while ceilings are profiled with multi-layered crown molding, creating a refined yet inviting atmosphere.

What truly sets this property apart is its customizable nature. “We build out the shell of the home, leaving a big open space without interior walls. That lets the homeowner create the exact indoor living space that is right for them,” Aaron explains. With no interior bearing walls, homeowners can specify the number of bedrooms, the layout, the size of the kitchen, and more, along with selecting custom fixtures and finishes.

“There’s a variety of floor plans, fixtures, and finishes. Some people are super modern, some people are super traditional, and then everything in between,” Aaron notes. The home also features a superior soundwall system that is more than double the minimum requirement for soundproofing, ensuring peace and privacy.

The stylish living room serves as a true focal point, featuring a sophisticated travertine natural stone fireplace surround that adds rustic elegance, while the gas fireplace creates a cozy ambiance. Expansive 400 series Andersen windows flood the space with natural light and offer breathtaking views. “You can see the lake and see some big buildings from downtown, and some more iconic things from Sioux Falls. The views are pretty amazing. That upper level is where a lot of people are doing their kitchens and main entertainment spaces,” Aaron notes.

The architectural design of this unique twin home is defined by its classic and contemporary luxury style with intricate details and varied textures spanning from the foundation to the rooflines.

The gourmet kitchen is a chef’s dream, featuring sleek quartz countertops, custom cabinetry, and top-of-the-line appliances. “The custom cabinetry with doors and drawer panels that are unique to this home is not something you see every day,” Aaron shares. A hidden pantry keeps storage and small appliances nearby but out of sight, while a wine bar equipped with a wine refrigerator, serving bar, and storage for glasses and barware stands ready for entertaining.

The primary suite serves as a private retreat, offering a deck for morning coffee or sunsets. The spa-inspired bath includes custom tile, brushed gold hardware, a full tile shower, and electric in-floor heat, ensuring comfort and luxury. The guest suite similarly features a full tile shower and in-floor heat, providing a spa-like experience.

Custom built-ins with a Murphy bed in the office allow for versatile space that easily transforms to meet your needs. An elevator adds ease and convenience, offering effortless access to every level.

The fully finished oversized two-car garage is a standout feature, equipped with built-ins for additional storage, modern doors, and epoxy flooring that adds durability and sleekness. Radiant in-floor heating ensures comfort during colder months.

Outdoor living is elevated with two private decks, one off the primary bedroom and another off the kitchen. The tile pedestal upper deck system with privacy rail provides phenomenal views of the lake and the surrounding area.

Built on generations of experience in fine craftsmanship, Krumvieda Companies has made “Do it right the first time” its transparent key to success. This twin home stands as a true gem within the Lake Lorraine community, offering the ultimate in modern luxury living.

Nielson Construction specializes in delivering practical, sophisticated, and affordable new homes that align with homeowners’ budgets and lifestyle needs.

With 21 years of industry experience, the Harrisburg-based company constructs approximately 260 homes annually throughout the Sioux Falls region, serving communities including Harrisburg, Tea, Brandon Valley, Garretson, Madison, Yankton, and Lennox.

“People like the ease of working with our team,” says Amy Evans, sales manager for Nielson Construction. “We have price points for everybody, and we usually have about 150 homes that are 100% complete all of the time. It allows for the convenience of being move-in ready right away.”

“Our building ranges from $232,000 to over $1 million,” Amy notes. “We build custom homes in the $350,000 to $400,000 price point, which most companies don’t. We’re equipped to construct custom homes tailored to specific client needs, whether that includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a two-stall garage or other configurations.”

Custom home construction typically requires an eight-month timeline. For buyers seeking a shorter timeline, Nielson Construction’s move-in-ready options, such as the mid-range property at 1721 N. Concord Drive in Sioux Falls, provide an attractive alternative.

“We recognize that not everyone can afford a million-dollar home. This property delivers exceptional value with some of the amenities of a luxury home at a better price point,” Amy explains. “Getting a larger home with three bedrooms on the main level at a lower price point is a need for this area.”

The 1,360-square-foot residence is located in a family-friendly northeast Sioux Falls neighborhood with convenient access to schools, parks, and retail centers. The thoughtfully designed floor plan features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a main-level laundry room, making it particularly well-suited for young families, Amy notes.

The main level’s split floor plan strategically positions the primary suite on one side of the home, with two additional bedrooms and a bathroom on the opposite side. A contemporary open-concept living, dining, and kitchen area serves as the central hub connecting these spaces.

Expansive picture windows in the living room and sliding glass doors in the dining area frame serene views of adjacent fields and mature trees. The sliding doors provide access to an elevated deck with stairs leading to the spacious backyard.

The kitchen features a sophisticated neutral palette complemented by a black island, black appliances, and coordinating hardware. A walk-in pantry with custom shelving provides additional storage capacity.

Architectural tray ceilings enhance the primary suite, which includes a generous walk-in closet. The primary bathroom showcases a spacious vanity and premium custom tilework in the shower. The laundry room’s proximity to the primary suite adds functional convenience.

“Another bonus is this home’s garage,” Amy states. “Today’s buyers increasingly
