We’ve all had days when the sun shines extra bright into our eyes. For drivers, that may mean combating the glare with window tint. But did you know you can put tint on your home’s windows, too?

Paul Stevenson is a window film specialist at Glass Doctor. He says there are different types of film they can install depending on your needs.

“30 to 40 years ago, window film started to come into cars, and a lot of people still don’t realize that we can add window film to their house windows,” says Paul. “Window films on houses have probably been out just as long.”

And these days, you have a lot more options.

“You can add metal and ceramic qualities into film now, too. You don’t have to do something that’s dark, and with most films, you can’t even tell it’s there. I actually think it really enhances people’s vision and the overall look because it knocks out that glare that our eyes shouldn’t be seeing. Eye doctors will tell you we should have it filtered a bit.”

Window film also brings protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

“We have a couple of versions of reflective type films. Every film I put on, no matter if it’s a clear film all the way to the darkest film, it blocks out 99% of the UV rays.”

In fact, Paul says the Skin Cancer Foundation has linked up with window film manufacturers to help in the fight against cancer.

“They’re really passionate about backing window film makers because of how much of the ultraviolet rays are blocked, both UVA and UVB. People are getting treated more and more every year for skin cancer, and it’s important that we do what we can to combat that.”

But it’s not just our skin and eyes that window tint protects us from. It’s also your personal items.

“People are putting down high-end flooring. They have photographs, pictures, portraits, and paintings. That stuff is fading,” says Paul. “Even indirect sunlight can have an impact.”

“In addition to those benefits, glare and privacy are the top two reasons people add window film to their homes,” Paul notes.

“Glare reduction is a huge thing,” explains Paul. “It can be one of those annoying things to constantly see glare from the sun on your TV.”

But window films have a “hidden” benefit many people don’t think about.

“What people don’t realize is that another incredible benefit to adding window film is efficiency. It’s almost a bonus to it. Most common films block out 65% of the heat coming through the glass.”

But stopping heat from coming in isn’t the only benefit. During the wintertime, many people have to deal with heat escaping their house because of the glass.

“I hate to say this, but glass is one of the worst insulator that we have in our house,” Paul notes. “But we’re not going to live in a solid-sided house. So, we add glass. When that tint is added on the inside, it can actually keep some of that heat from transferring through that glass and expelling to the outside in the wintertime.”

This means your furnace might not have to run as long or as hard, saving you money. “With window film, you may be able to generate a room that stays warmer in the winter,” Paul adds.

Another common place Paul sees window tints is in sunrooms.

“Sunrooms get hot in the summer and cold in the winter. In the dead of winter, say December 21st, which is the shortest day of the year, we are probably only getting about four to six hours of heat. But we are losing 18 to 20 hours of heat out of the windows because now we don’t have direct sun. Keeping that sun out in the summertime is just as important to keep AC costs down.”

Depending on the type of film you choose, it can block 20 to 95% of light.

“We can go really light or even to a medium shade, like sunglasses. But you don’t have to get dark film to get that energy efficiency. We have a chart that we have to follow to put window film on any house because not every double-pane window in the house is the same.”

Some people may be hesitant about adding film because they’re worried that their windows may look different, but Paul says that’s a misconception.

“A lot of people think of window film in a vehicle, and they think they have to go dark, but that’s not the case anymore. For example, we can use a dual reflective film, which is my most common. It’s neutral. In reality, I could probably show you 100 different films, but we are always going to do what is best for you at Glass Doctor.”

That’s why they were recently awarded for the 4th time the National Franchisee Award, the highest honor that can be given to a franchisee.

“With over 300 Glass Doctor locations nationwide, it’s an honor to receive it for the fourth time,” says Pamela Thomson, Glass Doctor’s operations manager. “It’s a testament to our commitment to our customers, and we believe we are the best glass shop around.”

Glass Doctor of Sioux Falls was presented with the National Franchisee Award in 2012, 2014, 2021, and 2024. They are the only franchise to receive this award four times.

The prestigious award is presented by each brand to the franchisee who has consistently grown through proper training and management of their organization and has had a consistently high level of sales through quality, professional service.

“We just care about our customers and we stand behind our products,” says Paul. “Our courteous, professional service is what sets Glass Doctor apart.”

Discerning Siouxland homeowners seek custom-built homes that deliver low maintenance alongside comfort and style. Harvey Custom Homes distinguishes itself through its comprehensive knowledge of the latest construction innovations and advanced building techniques.

“Not only do we have years of experience building custom homes, but we also have that same experience in the construction supply side of home building. This ensures you have the best products and craftsmanship going into your new home,” notes the Harvey Custom Homes website.

“Homeowners increasingly educate themselves about long-lasting, lower-maintenance materials before they meet with a custom home builder,” states Ben Harvey, owner of the Sioux Falls-based firm.

One emerging trend shows homeowners favoring lower-maintenance materials such as metal, PVC plastic, or stucco-based siding over traditional vinyl options.

“The number one thing we hear when talking to customers about their home is, ‘I don’t want to mess with my siding,’” Ben explains. “You’ve got to know what’s out there and on the market.”

Lower-maintenance materials do not significantly increase construction costs and can provide additional benefits, such as reducing noise from wind and weather.

Ben’s background in the lumber supply field provides him with product knowledge that many other builders lack.

“We go to the International Builders’ Show every year. There are all the different vendors, and we get to see the different products. They’ve got educational courses there just on new things that are coming out, including

better ways to sell them to people, and we really keep up on that,” Ben shares.

“There are other shows throughout the year we try to hit, too,” Ben states. “We really push to try to stay ahead of the curve of products.”

This commitment to innovation and quality materials is evident in Harvey Custom Homes’ recent projects. A prime example is their residence located at 530 Laney Lane in Baltic, South Dakota, which showcases how the company’s philosophy translates into practical, livable spaces.

The home was designed for homeowners who enjoy hosting family and friends. This custom home serves as a welcoming haven with generous square footage and numerous leisure amenities.

“It’s a great, unique modern house, with just an awesome layout. It’s really well thought out,” Ben adds.

The home’s sleek, modern exterior features EFIS, Stone, and Chamclad siding. The rear of the house showcases a 1,000-square-foot wraparound deck constructed from maintenance-free materials, same as the siding. Both the dining room and master suite open directly onto this expansive deck.

On the main floor, a tiled fireplace stretches from floor to the 14-foot ceiling, creating a dramatic focal point. Lighted shelves and built-in bookcases flank the sleek gas fireplace.

Copper lighting fixtures and an eye-catching copper farmhouse sink provide a striking contrast against contemporary black-and-white custom cabinets and Cambria countertops. A hidden door conceals a pantry with additional storage and workspace. The kitchen and bathrooms feature one-touch toe-kick lighting activated by sensors for ultimate convenience.

The luxurious master suite and two additional bedrooms occupy the main floor. A black paneled wall creates a dramatic focal point in the master suite, while the spa-like master bathroom with heated flooring offers abundant space for relaxation. The bathroom features a freestanding tub, zero-entry walk-in shower, two separate vanities, and a private toilet area. A large walk-in closet completes the master suite.

In the home’s most functional spaces, lockers and cabinets provide ample storage in the mudroom and adjoining laundry room.

The lower level offers resort-style amenities. Behind a full wet bar, the homeowners’ wine collection is displayed in a custom wine room featuring a unique floor of

penny-round copper metallic tiles beneath illuminated wine racks.

A popcorn machine at the wet bar enhances movie nights. The home theater, complete with projector, movie screen, and plush recliners, provides comfortable viewing of favorite films. A barn door can separate or open the theater to the adjacent indoor golf simulator.

The lower level also includes two additional bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and an exercise room. An under-stairway space has been transformed into a custom playhouse for children.

This ranch-style walkout basement opens to a patio beneath the upper deck, equipped for a hot tub, with yard space suitable for a swimming pool.

The three-stall heated garage features epoxy flooring and provides ample space for vehicles, outdoor equipment, and storage.

Permanent outdoor lighting, another popular trend, illuminates the property, adding a luminous, low-maintenance enhancement to this luxury home.

“We’ve been putting those on everything lately,” Ben adds.

FROM VISION TO REALITY

Craig Wynia’s favorite kinds of clients are people who have a creative vision for their future home, and they trust Craig to bring their ideas to life. As a distinctive custom builder, he excels at transforming dreams into reality.

“In every project we do, there’s an aspect of that project we love and we want to be a part of,” states Craig, the co-owner and builder for Red Rock Builders. “If a client comes to me and they’re struggling to find a builder to accomplish their ideas, I’ll bring that to reality.”

When it comes to the design of a custom home, Craig believes in letting clients take the lead. Red Rock Builders works with a variety of designers in the Sioux Falls/western Iowa region who can assist clients, Craig notes.

“As a custom home builder, we don’t really ever direct the finishes in the house. It’s kind of a neat feature when you work with us. Clients get to choose all their own finishes and design ideas,” Craig shares.

“People can do so much research ahead of time and then bring me their ideas. I can make every dream idea they show me a reality in some way, shape, or form,” Craig adds.

The results are stunning homes such as the one at 1301 S. Greene St., in Rock Rapids, Iowa. It is an utterly personalized reflection of clients’ design ideas and lifestyle.

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom ranch-style home features 3,080 square feet of finished space. The residence was built to maximize the sloped lot it’s on, and that allowed the client to achieve his dream garage. Its 14-foot ceiling accommodates a stacker hoist that can store two cars on top of each other.

“It’s always been a part of the client’s dream to have the ability to have a stacker hoist in the garage to put cars on,” Craig explains. “It allowed us to do an oversize four-stall garage with ceiling heights

for the stacker hoist. We were trying to create a house that fit the lot and looked like it belonged on that piece of ground.”

Craig describes the overall style of the house as refined contemporary. It’s modern, yet comfortable, with warm wood tones, neutral colors, and forest green on the kitchen island and laundry room cabinetry. White oak engineered hardwood flooring flows throughout the main level’s black plaster fireplace surround and chunky black stair rails upstairs and down. The metal stair rails and lighting above the downstairs bar were custom-made by Wynia Custom Hand Rails.

Perhaps the boldest design inspiration came from the clients: innovative wood-and-black accent walls Craig created for the entry and the master bedroom.

“We took the idea and ran with it to resemble what the

client had seen on Pinterest,” Craig states. “We glued vinyl plank flooring to the walls and painted them the black accent color, and inlaid wood flooring. I wanted to tie it in with the wood in the house. Wood flooring was the best material I could come up with to achieve that.”

Black, white, and wood tones continue through the master bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom particularly delivers pampering, with heated floors and a heated mirror that prevents even the steamiest shower from leaving moisture on it.

The gem of the main floor is a four-seasons outdoor living space, Craig shares. A screened-in porch extends the living room and offers year-round coziness with an outdoor gas fireplace, electric radiant heat, an audio system, and TV.

Downstairs, Craig used innovative rustic-modern design to pay tribute to the clients’ lives.

“In the bar area, we did a tumbled thin brick. The client is a retired firefighter who likes that smoky, burned rustic bar look. We wanted to bring in that vintage bar look, so we brought that in with that vintage brick and dark oak stained tops to blend in and match,” Craig notes.

“Custom lighting over the bar’s 12-foot island is made from pieces of old hay trolleys from swap meets and flea markets,” Craig explains. “The light fixture is a nod to the dairy farm where the client grew up.”

“It’s just a comfortable area with multiple TVs, so when they host a party and watch football, they can have different games on different TVs,” Craig notes.

There’s space nearby for clients to realize another dream. They can bring in Skee-Ball or pinball machines and make a home arcade.

“We pride ourselves on going above and beyond to meet clients’ expectations,” Craig affirms.
