GLENROY: Community Profile
Glenroy is a suburb located approximately 13 kilometers from Melbourne CBD. It is part of the Moreland municipality (figure 1) and has a population of 24, 734 people, with an average growth of 2.5% over the past 5 years (Profile Id, 2019). This multicultural suburb is home to a diverse population of families from many different backgrounds, students, young professionals, and trade workers.

The suburb’s
Single separate houses are most common type of dwelling. However, medium density type housing (example shown in figure 3) are increasing, rising up 27% since 2006 (ABS). Housing tenure has dramatically changed since 2006. Home ownership has decreased from 36% to 28.% whilst renters have increased from 29.4% to 36.1% (Profile Id, 2006 & 2016)
Public housing (shown in figure 4) and homeless services are available in the suburb through the Vincent care organisation, however, supply of social and public housing is not enough to meet the demands for affordable housing. Currently in Victoria, there are 99,264 people on the waitlist for public housing (Rouch, 2020) and numbers have continued to grow since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Approximately 12.5% of households pay rent equal to or greater than 30% of their income (ABS, 2016). However, this number may have increased as median rent has increased up to $420 in 2020 (REIV, 2020).

Glenroy is the second most disadvantaged suburb in the City of Moreland with a SEIFA index score of 952.6. The subrub has a low percentile of 21 (Profile Id, 2020) when compared to other Victorian suburbs and it has a lower employment rate, education level and median incomes. Social and housing services are much needed within the suburb as living costs continue to rise overtime.

Surrounding Glenroy train station is the main commercial district which consist of a variety of retail, cafes, and offices. This activity center provides residents a convenient place access shops and services, as well as provide local employment. The suburb also has a distinct industrial zone clustered along Sages road near Gowrie station.

Employment & Industry
Centrally located in the suburb is the Glenroy train station (Craigieburn metro line) which is currently under construction for the level crossing removal project. There is also another train line along the eastern border of the suburb next to the Hume highway which further connects the Glenroy to suburbs along the Upfield metro line.
Overall, Glenroy has good public transportation coverage (seen in figure 5) with bus lines running throughout the suburb, connecting residents to train stations and to neighbouring suburbs such as Broadmeadows.
Similarly, to the rest of Victoria, there is still a high reliance on cars with the majority of households owning one or more vehicles, however, the number of public transportation users is increasing over the years.
