Supporting the Physicians of Tomorrow The Sutter Family Medicine Residency Program The Sutter Family Practice Residency Program is dedicated to training and educating tomorrow’s family medicine physicians today. Over the course of the three-year program, residents care for patients of all ages, learning a wide variety of primary-care skills from delivering babies and treating diabetes to diagnosing sports injuries.
California faces a physician shortage by 2015. Not only does the state have an aging physician workforce, but also fewer medical students are choosing primary care careers, opting instead for higher-paying specialty care. Moreover, the state’s rapidly growing population will place a significant strain on the health-care delivery system and its physicians. As part of its community mission, Sutter Health is helping to bridge the gap in primary care physicians through its three-year Family Medicine Residency Program. Residents work side-by-side with Sutter faculty in a clinic setting, learning a variety of primary care modalities from ambulatory care to innovative practice management. Hands-on training in the latest diagnostic and treatment techniques helps residents master new skills. And practicing real-time with new equipment and technology keeps their skills fresh in a rapidly changing medical environment.
