Ypres

IN THE PAST…

Ypres is a city with an especially rich and diverse past. Ypres was a flourishing place of commerce during the Middle Ages, when the city was one of the leading cloth centres in Flanders, along with Bruges and Ghent. The impressive Cloth Hall is evidence of these years of glory. St. Martin’s Cathedral and the superb fortresses also date back to this period. The charming city was reduced to a huge pile of rubble during the First World War. Ypres was almost completely destroyed by four years of senseless violence but the people of Ypres succeeded in rebuilding their city with an appreciation for the history of the place.

& World War I REMEMBRANCE TREES

As many as 140 remembrance trees have been planted along the Ypres Salient in spots where the first front lines cross a (public) road or path. The trees are recognisable from the metalcoloured baskets surrounding them. Red baskets indicate the German front line and blue the Allied (French and/or British) front line. These colours reflect the colours featured on the frontline maps. Most of the baskets have an information board showing historical photographs of the spot where they stand and details about the location of the front lines.

4 | YPRES 2016

From October 1914 to October 1918 the First World War battlefield was just a few kilometres from Ypres city centre. No less than five bloody battles were fought in the famous Ypres Salient. Raging nearly 100 years ago, this war claimed 600,000 victims in Belgium. Some 425,000 graves and the very many names of missing people on monuments now bear witness to this painful history. The present Ypres Salient landscape is therefore the last remaining evidence of many WWI relicts and sites waiting to be discovered. The In Flanders Fields Museum in the Cloth Hall tells the story of the First World War in a compelling way. There are many opportunities outside the museum walls too to discover traces of the war. Ypres City of Peace is anxious to tell the story of the Great War in order to ensure the message of peace remains just as relevant today. Three new entry points were opened in 2015 along the Ypres Salient, North, East and South. In 2016 these were joined by hiking trails with new places waiting to be discovered. These entry points tell the story of this particular location with help of an introductory film and information panels. Free booklets providing information about the tours are available.

NORTH ENTRY POINT

The northern entry point is located in the reconstructed farm Klein Zwaanhof, where you will be able to see authentic war material in addition to the film. You can set off from here to take a 2.8 km walk past the small cemeteries created after the gas attack in 1915 and as far as the reconstructed Yorkshire Trench & Dug-Out. • Kleine Poezelstraat 6, 8904 Boezinge

EAST ENTRY POINT

The entry point along the eastern Ypres Salient is located in front of the Hooge Crater Museum. Apart from the very informative film, you can also discover information about the many chateau estates that used to exist in and around Ypres. A walking tour is available here, taking you past distinctive monuments and the hidden craters of Bellewaarde Ridge. • Musée Hooge Crater, Meenseweg 467, 8902 Zillebeke

YPRES 2016 | 5

SOUTH ENTRY POINT

The South entry point is situated in the splendid De Palingbeek provincial estate. You can first go exploring through The Bluff crater-filled landscape then take a walk as far as the highly rated Hill 60 site and the huge Caterpillar crater. A beautiful 4 km walk. • Provincial Domain De Palingbeek, Palingbeekstraat, 8902 Zillebeke Hill 60, Zwarteleenstraat, 8902 Zillebeke

The first floor of the Cloth Hall can be reached through the In Flanders Fields Museum. A visit to the Museum can be combined with a trip to the Belfry tower. The visitor centre for Ypres and Westhoek, the Museum Information Centre, the Museum café and the Museum entrance are located on the ground floor. See the ‘Museums’ section for further details about the Museum.

14 | YPRES 2016

Ypres has many historical sites, to much to include all. Let you inspire...

CLOTH HALL, BELFRY, CARILLON

As an example and certainly as a reflection of its power and wealth, the City decided in the 12th century to have its public buildings constructed in stone. This was done with a sense of ambition: the Ypres Cloth Hall and Belfry were recognised in the 13th century as being one of the most impressive civil buildings in Europe! The Cloth Hall was used as a place for selling and storing cloth on the (now covered) waterway, the River Ieperlee. Construction of the Cloth Hall was completed in 1304. During the First World War the building was completely destroyed except for a section of the tower and some walls. Reconstruction was supervised by architects J. Coomans and P.A. Pauwels. Some belfries are detached while others form part of a city hall or cloth hall. The Ypres Belfry forms the 70-metre high Cloth Hall Tower, stressing the huge importance of the cloth trade, which was the basis of Ypres’ prosperity and power during the Middle Ages. The Belfry was the safest and best-protected place in the city during the Middle Ages. It was also used to store ‘laissez-passers’ and the treasury. The tower was also used as a place to keep weapons and as a look-out post. The base of the Ypres Belfry, the “Donkerpoort”, managed to survive over the centuries and through the First World War. It is the passage under the belfry. Dating back to about 1200, the sturdy vaults represent some of the very rare remnants of medieval Ypres that managed to survive the destruction during the war. The Donkerpoort is also a prime example of early Gothic architecture in Ypres. Above the “Donkerpoort”, under the coat of arms, is a statue of Our Lady of Thuyne, the city’s patron saint. Carillon Starting in the 13th and 14th centuries, centres with city charters were allowed to own city bells, including Ypres. The bells in the belfry tower played a tune before striking the hour. The number of bells steadily increased over the centuries but the quality left something to be desired. After the First World War the bells became a full grown carillon with 49 bells. They were completely restored in 2012. 1

»

Every Saturday afternoon visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a live concert provided by the city carilloneur, Ludo Geloen. People visiting the tower may even play a tune if they wish.

NIEUWERCK/CITY HALL

The Nieuwerck was built in 1619 against the east face of the Cloth Hall and City Hall. Resting on a row of pointed arches with large cross windows and a classical church window, this construction still has a fairly Gothic appearance. However, the decorations in the tympanums tend towards the Renaissance. The first plans date back to 1570. The building was restored in 1862 before being completely destroyed on 22 November 1914, except for the pillars. Reconstruction got under way towards 1950 but the building was not occupied by the municipal administration again until 1967. The “final stone” was officially laid, signalling the end of the reconstruction programme

»

The numbers refer to their location on the city map. The red line gives a suggestion for an individual city walk.

In the Council Chamber there is a splendid stained glass window based on a design by Arno Brys and drafts of wall paintings by Charles Degroux (ca. 1870). In March 2016 the municipal services will be relocated from the City Hall to Auris, a new administrative centre in Ter Waarde. 2

ST. MARTIN’S CATHEDRAL

The cathedral is a former Episcopal church in Gothic style reconstructed after the First World War. Bishop Jansenius and Count Robert of Bethune, the ‘Lion of Flanders’, lie buried here. Cornelius Jansenius is the most famous Bishop of Ypres. His main work, ‘Augustinus’ remained unpublished until 1640, two years after his death. Jansenius wrote there that only God can have pity on our souls. Christians cannot save their souls themselves and may not “purchase” them by way of indulgences. The work by the Bishop of Ypres was condemned in 1642, mainly because of the influence of the Jesuits. The work was finally judged to be heretical and was prohibited by the Pope. Robrecht van Béthune passed away on 17 September 1322. He is the only Flemish count to be buried in Ypres, in deference to his express wish. He still enjoys the reputation of having been a popular and good-natured count, who fought for the independence of the cities and of Flanders, his county. The cathedral has a beautiful side altar with an altarpiece and the miracle statue of Our Lady of Thuyne. The cathedral is open to the public but not during services. The 100-metre tower is not open to the public. The Lapidarium next to the cathedral contains the older ruins of St. Martine’s deanery. One of the few remaining ruins in the city centre, the lapidarium is a permanent reminder of the destruction caused by the First World War. The death in 1937 of the city architect Jules Coomans may be one of the reasons why this monastery has not been rebuilt. 3

16 | YPRES 2016

SAINT-GEORGE’S MEMORIAL CHURCH

This Anglican church was built in 1928-29 following the plans of London architect Sir Reginald Blomfield. This “Memorial Church” holds many reminders of the First World War. Everything down to the furniture was donated by British associations, regiments or individuals. After the Menin Gate, it is the most important monument for the fallen in Ypres centre. The church is open to the public daily. Next to the church is Eton School, which was built after WWI. For several years this has catered for the children of British workers seeing to the upkeep of the cemeteries. 4

OLD SEIGNORY BUILDING

The facade of this 15th century building displays a series of medallions representing the seven deadly sins. It was temporarily used as a city hall after the First World War. Now it is used as a court house for the chamber of commerce. 6

YPRES 2016 | 17

MENIN GATE

This memorial in the form of a Roman triumphal arch displays the names of 54,896 soldiers of the then British Empire who went missing in action. This memorial lists the names from the beginning of the war until 15 August 1917. Soldiers reported missing after 16 August 1917 until the end of the war are mentioned on panels at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendaele. There are 34,984 of them. The Menin Gate was inaugurated on 24 July 1927 by Herbert Plumer. The site of the Menin Gate was occupied for centuries by another gate that had different names throughout history. The gate was originally called the Hangwaertpoort and subsequently renamed Antwerp Gate. When Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban established the ramparts in the 17th century, the gate was transformed, assuming a classical appearance with distinct Doric qualities. Napoleon paid a visit to the city on 8 July 1803, whereupon the gate was called the Napoleon Gate. In1815 it was given its present name: Menin Gate. It was demolished in 1862 and this entrance was no more than 13 metres wide in the ramparts. During the First World War the British troops marched through this “gate” to defend the “Ypres Salient”. 8

»

Every evening at 8 o’clock the Last Post is sounded under the Menin Gate by buglers from the Last Post Association.

18 | YPRES 2016

LILLE GATE

The Lille Gate forms part of the fortification lines around Ypres. It is the oldest still standing city gate from the 14th century. Connecting two parts of the Ypres ramparts, the Lille Gate is completed with Burgundian towers. It separates the Major Canal from the Castle Canal and is a combination of a water and land gate. On the left-hand side of the Lille Gate is the entrance to the vaulted room, while on the right-hand side is the lock chamber with lock dates for the streams and moat waters. It is through this gate that the roughly 2.5 metre deep River Ieperlee enters the city. On the inside wall of the gate old signposts showing the way to British cemeteries can still be seen. During the war the gate was one of the key ‘passages’ to the front line and was used more frequently than the Menin Gate as this path could be more effectively protected against enemy artillery fire. 13

FISHMARKET

The Fish Market is a narrow cobbled square located between Boterstraat and Seminariestraat. You take Boterstraat to pass under the Fish Market gate. The Ypres Fish Market obviously used to be a place where fish was sold, but it is now better known as the ‘going-out’ district. In the old tollhouse (1899), also called Minckhuisje, the fishmongers had to pay toll. A little further on are two covered stalls. The Fish Gate with Neptune, god of the sea, was originally built in 1714 but was also destroyed in WWI and had to be rebuilt. 18

YPRES 2016 | 19

RAMPARTS CEMETERY

This originally French military cemetery was used by the British from February 1915 to April 1918. The cemetery still has 198 graves in which 163 Britons, 10 Canadians, 11 Australians and 14 New Zealanders (including 10 Maoris) are laid to rest. Another four bodies were buried there in1999. Reservoir Cemetery is another Commonwealth cemetery, a walking distance away within the old Ypres city walls (19). Buried there are 2,614 war casualties, 1,035 of whom are unidentified. 20

DE KAZEMATTEN RECEPTION CENTRE

The different between casemates and souterrains is that the latter do not have gun holes and are used as storage areas. Casemates were designed to accommodate artillery and thus had gun holes. Both were theoretically bombproof. The souterrains were known locally as ‘Kazematten’ and are still called that today. Starting in roughly 1680 the souterrains were used as a military bakery for the garrisons of various armies. The rooms were so well protected that they even resisted the modern artillery systems used during the First World War. That is why, in October 1914, when the shelling of Ypres began, the casemates and souterrains were used for shelter. The British troops turned the old military bakery into an officers’ mess, command post, dressing post and resting-place. De Kazematten reception centre in Bollingstraat is located behind St.-James Church, 100 metres from the Menin Gate. The centre comprises five large rooms that have been restored and adapted with due respect for the architectural past. Located there is an elegant brewery operating under the Sint-Bernardus (Watou) banner and offering local beers and snacks. The ‘Ten decades of Ypres ramparts’ interpretation centre has been set up in room 4, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the Ypres rampart landscape with its unique historical and cultural references and the beautiful natural surroundings that have developed so close to the historical centre. Setting off from the casemates you can easily reach the ramparts to discover the rampart routes (see ‘Walking/cycling/touring’). You will also have an opportunity in the final room to get involved in the Coming World Remember Me workshop. 27

KAZEMATTEN HOUTEN PAARD

»

On Saturday afternoon the brewer will take you on a tour of the brewery and obviously top the visit off with a tasting session of Wipers Times 14 and Grottenbeer. A visit is organised every 30 minutes between 3 pm and 5 pm (NL or EN). • Houtenpaard 1, 8900 Ypres www.kazematten.be

The ‘Kazematten van het Houten Paard’ (the casemates of the wooden horse) were built around 1680 following the plans of Vauban, the great military engineer of Louis XIV. These 3 unique casemates or souterrains are part of the 17th century walls surrounding the city of Ypres. Over the centuries these souterrains were used to store ammunition and military equipment, and were used as sleeping quarters and shelter for the troops who defended Ypres during the many sieges. The British troops during the First World War used the casemates as an officers’ mess. Their command headquarters and field hospital were also based in ‘Hotel de Remparts’, as the casemates were ironically called. It was also the home of the famous British trench gazette ‘The Wipers Times’. And now there is a unique brewery operating under the Sint-Bernardus (Watou) banner in this unique location. 23

AMMUNITION DUMP

The ammunition dump dates back to 1817 and was built on the foundations of a former French ammunition dump by the army of the Netherlands under William I. The building survived WWI, and was restored in 1998. During a guided visit you will be treated to an audiovisual presentation about the history of the ramparts and the city. The ammunition dump marks the end of the ramparts route. 35

MUNICIPAL MUSEUM

Ieperleestraat 31, 8900 Ypres tel. +32 (0)57 239 220 | www.visit-ypres.com The Municipal Museum is housed in the former St.-John’s almshouse. This is one of the few architectural treasures in Ypres (dating back to the 13th century) to more or less survive the First World War. The almshouse façade is located along the river Ieperlee, which is now culverted over, while the present front garden used to be the unloading area. The almshouse served just as well as a hospital and a hospice. It was turned into a military hospital, until in 1801 when it became a home for the elderly run by the Municipal Houses of Worship. The building was extended in 1844. The almshouse became a listed monument in 1940. The former wash house was refurbished as St. Godelieve’s chapel. Since 1985 it has housed the oldest part of the Municipal Museum collections. The Municipal Museum outlines the centuries-old history of the city in the light of old paintings, prints, cards and original photographs. One of the rooms is dedicated to the military ramparts around the city. The Municipal Museum also houses an extensive collection of tin objects and a magnificent collection of paintings belonging to the City of Ypres. The showpiece is the extensive collection of artworks by Ypres painter Louise De Hem (1866-1922). Her splendid pastels are real treasures. 32 Open: 1 April - 31 October | 10 am to 12.30 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm 1 November - 31 March | 2 pm to 5 pm Closed: Mondays & 25/12 + 1/01 Admission: 2,50 euro/pers. free with a ticket from the In Flanders Fields Museum

MERGHELYNCK MUSEUM

Merghelynckstraat 2, 8900 Ypres tel. +32 (0)57 239 220 | www.visit-ypres.com

Housed in a ‘hotel’ dating back to 1774, the Hotel-Museum Merghelynck was designed by Lille architect Thomas Gombert in a transition style from rococo to neoclassicism. After the First World War this mansion house was faithfully restored. The Hotel-Museum Merghelynck is probably Ypres’ least known, but probably most exceptional museum. This is where Arthur Merghelynck opened his private museum in 1894, dedicated to the lifestyle of the nobility in the 18th century. The museum is due to be completely refurbished. The first phase will be completed in the summer of 2016. The fully restored museum with all the original furniture is scheduled to reopen in 2017. However you will be allowed to catch a glimpse in 2016 of the magnificent newly decorated spaces during a visit to the Colour and Elegance exhibition. An opportunity to take a peek at the life of designer Edouard Vermeulen from Ypres who became the head of the Natan fashion house. 15

on foot... RAMPARTS

The ramparts of Ypres are the best preserved in our country. Their story started ten centuries ago when the town originated on the banks of the Ieperlee. Initially, the ramparts were little more than an earth wall with moats. Later stone walls and towers were added. Later still they developed into a complex structure with bastions, advance redoubts, moats and walls. The signposted route is 2.6 km long and will lead you along a quiet 90 minute walk. Along the route 23 information panels provide information on the various facets of Vauban’s ramparts.

You can discover the rich treasures of Ypres digitally. The application I Ieper shows you the Ypres of the past through original image material on your smartphone or tablet. This application takes you on a trip through the city centre and gives you interesting info. > Available in the App Store.

De Palingbeek provincial estate is located 5 kilometres from Ypres, in the centre of the hilly Ypres Salient. The property takes its name from a stream that flows into the Oude Vaart (Old Canal). Every visit to this green oasis is surprisingly different, with opportunities to discover natural wonders, landscapes steeped in history, the higher realms of the AstroLAB IRIS observatory or the hustle and bustle of the environmental farm. From 1990 onwards, the 67-hectare green area around the Oude Vaart was developed into a spacious 240-hectare estate. As a result of this expansion this area is now home to a variety of biotopes with a wealth of plant and animal life. Pools and marshes, old and young woods, orchards and flower-filled meadows, sunbathing and play areas succeed each other. Extensive signposted hiking trails lead you to the most beautiful spots. There is a large café for a quick bite or a larger dinner. The landscape is marked by four attempts to dig a canal between Ypres and Comines and the violence wreaked during the First World War. The Bluff, Caterpillar and Hill 60 have been drastically modified against the background of the WWI commemoration activities. At this ‘South entry point’ you can see a thought-provoking cinematic insight into the formation of the southern Ypres Salient from Hill 60 to Sint-Elooi. Signs of the underground war with mine craters from 1915 to 1917 can still be seen nowadays along with the typical small cemeteries. No man’s land is clearly shown as a result of the landscaping activities. Pay a trip to De Palingbeek to discover the estate’s rich past. A permanent exhibition uses unique photographs to illustrate the construction of the Oude Vaart. Entertaining interactive exhibitions help to teach children about nature and the environment. The environmental farm’s vegetable garden has become an authentic closed-loop system and a source of inspiration for healthy gardening.
