Free Lunch for Public Schools Yes, you read that correctly. FREE! Public school lunch is now available to all New York City public school students in all grades entirely free of charge. The Free School Lunch for All

program is federally funded, and will not affect the city’s budget. “We know that students cannot learn or thrive in school if they are hungry all day,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Free school

lunch will not only ensure that every kid in New York City has the fuel they need to succeed, but also further our goal of providing an excellent and equitable education for all students.”

Common Core No More?

Important School Dates

Critics of Common Core rejoice: the widely opposed statewide learning curriculum is set to receive an overhaul after the Board of Regents officially adopted the Next Generation Learning Standards last month. The newly revised English Language Arts and Mathematics Learning Standards are the result of over two years of collaborative work between educators and parents. It is slated for full implementation by 2020, in time for the Spring 2021 state tests for grades 3-8. Link to more information on the changes at siparent.com.

everything you need to know about your community construction equipment at the Touch-A-Truck fundraiser. The low-cost event, hosted by the Staten Island Mental Health Society, will support local children with special needs. The event will be held, rain or shine, at the Vanderbilt parking lot in South Beach on October 8 from 11am to 3 pm. Visitors will be invited to touch and explore the trucks and meet the people who protect, build and serve the community. The $5 admission includes entertainment, face painting, crafts and other activities for kids. All proceeds will benefit the diverse programs and services provided by the SIMHS for Staten Island children, teens, young adults (and their families) who are challenged with behavioral/emotional disorders, intellectual/learning disabilities, chemical addictions and other conditions — over 6,000 families on Staten Island. Go to simhs.org to purchase your tickets online or call 718-442-2225 for more info. You can also link directly to more info at siparent.com.

Amazon Coming to Staten Island Looking for a job? Amazon recently announced plans to open a fulfillment center on Staten Island’s West Shore. The facility will occupy 855,000 square feet of space and employ 2,250 people. According to Borough President Oddo, this will be the largest creator of jobs in Staten Island’s history. The facility is slated to open sometime in 2018.

Halloween Bargain Hunting for a Cause Here’s an awesome way to save your money on this year’s costume and help a child with special needs at the same time. The Tottenville Thrift Shop, operated by the Staten Island Mental Health Society (SIMHS), is bursting at the seams with gently used Halloween costumes - from presidents to poltergeists - for children and adults. Bargain hunters will also find a bevy of Halloween decorations for the lawn or living room, tagged at the lowest discount prices. All proceeds of shop sales benefit the SIMHS’s wide range of mental health and related programs and services for kids with special needs. Last year, the Society assisted more than 5,000 Staten Island children and their families. The Tottenville Thrift Shop is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Call them at 718-984-7439.

Now that the 2017-1018 school year is in full swing, it’s time to prepare for what’s to come. The 2018 Middle School Directory is available for download and serves as a resource for fifth grade students who will be graduating elementary school at the end of this school year. In addition, the deadline to submit a request for Gifted and Talented testing is Monday, November 13 for students born between 2010 and 2013. For more information on Gifted and Talented Resources, middle school applications, as well as the high school admissions process and other important information from the Department of Education, bookmark our Public Schools page on siparent.com.

Cancer Tamer Here’s a scary fact: breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in our community. When Dr. Charley Ferrer was first diagnosed with breast cancer, she was frustrated with the lack of information available. So she turned her frustration into awareness by starting the Cancer Tamer Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing education and inspiration to women with breast cancer, leukemia, and other forms of the disease. The ultimate goal is to help women with cancer advocate for themselves and live healthier more fulfilling lives. Dr. Charley’s desire to educate the community compelled her to produce a television talk show with co-host and segment producer, Debra Santulli-Barone, whom she met at a cancer support group. The Cancer Tamer TV Talk Show provides the community with insight on cancer awareness and prevention, cancer recurrence, dealing with emotions, creative nutrition, creative movement or exercise and more. During each show, Dr. Charley interviews a physician or holistic practitioner to address various avenues of healing and health. The hosts candidly

Talk about a triple threat! Congratulations are in order for impressive Manor Heights triplets Lindi, Lirim and Luan Gjonbala, who have all been selected to the Regional Pool of the Eastern New York Soccer Association. They’re three of just 77 Eastern New York Olympic Development Program players who have made the Regional Pool. “The boys are remarkably talented,” commented their ODP coach, Jerome Vivona. “They work hard for 90 minutes and from box-to-box. They are great teammates and each of them in camp proved they belong in the Regional Pool.”

Holiday Fairs Is your school or organization hosting a holiday fair this season? The upcoming November and December issues of S.I. Parent will feature our annual list of local holiday fairs in Staten Island. The list will also be featured online at siparent.com. Please email the time, date, location and additional details of your holiday fair to jcintron@siparent.com, with the subject line “Holiday Fairs” to ensure your event is featured on our list. Don’t let your school miss out!

Fraud Alerts In the aftermath of the Equifax breach, many people are searching for ways to secure their personal financial information. Although you don’t need to be a victim of identity theft to employ these tools, you can consider if adding a fraud alert or a credit freeze to your account is the best method for you. If you need more clarity on the difference between the two, log on to siparent.com/consumer_info for an explanation from the Federal Trade Commission, as well as some helpful links and the phone numbers for the three credit reporting organizations.

Festa Italiana at the Mount They’re calling it the biggest Columbus Day celebration in Staten Italy – er, Island’s -- history. Festa Italiana is a three-day Italian heritage festival that will include games and rides for kids, live music, delicious food and more. According to BP Oddo, the past success of Rome Through Richmond Town called for a larger venue. “We’re partnering with Mount Loretto to make this an even bigger festival that can accommodate many more people and activities,” he said. “We want more music, more culture, more education, more fun, and we intend to deliver on that front. This is a weekend for all of Staten Island to celebrate Italian-American culture and have fun.” The festival will take place on Friday, October 6th from 5-11pm, Saturday, October 7th from 1-11pm, and Sunday, October 8th from 4-9pm. Admission will be $5 for adults. Children under 12 will be admitted free. Parking will be free.

The boys have also been playing for the Cedar Stars Academy Gunners for the past four years, winning the Eastern New York Premier League (ENYPL) title in 2015 with Lirim playing as forward and his two brothers in the midfield. The team is now registered in the Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL). “The triplets are great fun and they bring a whole lot of energy to the team and are very positive kids,” commented Cedar Stars coach George MacDonald. “Each have their own individual qualities but all are feisty. Lindi is very aggressive and pacy, Lirim is a great finisher and Luan is a great passer.”

Falling Back In a digital world, you probably don’t need a reminder to set your clocks back. But you could use a little heads-up that your schedule is about to be thrown off for a while. It’s time to “fall back” into the shorter days and longer nights of autumn as we prepare to turn back the clocks early next month. Daylight Savings Time ends at 2am on Sunday, November 5, 2017. Enjoy the extra hour of weekend sleep. Just kidding – you have kids!

New York State Constitutional ConventioN…Yes or No ? On Tuesday, November 7th, New Yorkers will head to the polls and vote Yes or No to the following question, “Shall there be a convention to revise the Constitution and amend the same?” Every twenty years New York voters have the opportunity to authorize a convention of delegates to create amendments to the state constitution. The proposition will appear on the back of the ballot. Voters will have to flip that ballot over to cast a Yes or No vote. There is a pending lawsuit that is waging an effort to mandate the New York State Board of Election to place the question on the front of the ballot. Recent social media posts have erroneously stated that if a voter leaves the question blank it will be counted as a Yes. This is FALSE. Only actual Yes and No votes will be counted. If the proposition receives more No votes in November, the process ends. If the proposition passes with a majority of Yes votes, a State Constitutional Convention will move forward. The first step requires the election of delegates on November 6, 2018. There would be 3 delegates elected in each of the 63 New York State senate districts and 15 statewide delegates, for a total of 204 delegates. At the completion of the delegate election, the convention will convene on April 2, 2019. Each delegate will receive an annual salary of $79,500, equal to that of a New York State assembly member. Total delegate salary would cost the state approximately $16 million. In addition, the delegates will hire staff and set their salaries, as well as purchase necessary equipment and meeting venues. Some have estimated the overall costs to fall between $50 and $150 million for the constitutional convention. The most recent constitutional conventions resulted in state legislators, their staff members and politically-connected individuals elected as delegates.

The current constitution allows elected officials, judges and other government employees to double dip, collecting the $79,500 delegate salary in addition to their regular government salary. State laws also allow the delegate salary to be factored into pension calculations for these members. During the convention, elected delegates will propose amendments to the State Constitution. Proponents believe this is the best option to enact reforms to combat alleged corruption in Albany. They hope to restrict state legislator’s outside income and implement ethics reform that has been gridlock. A constitutional convention could also result in eliminating a state legislative chamber, streamlining the legislative process. The current legislative make-up includes 63 state senators and 150 assembly members. Supporters believe a convention could potentially remove unfunded mandates, which place financial burdens on local municipalities. Additionally, they believe it could provide savings in the government pension plans. Opponents believe the high costs of conducting a convention and having state legislators as delegates, will hinder any chance of positive changes. There are concerns that opening the books on every law can negatively impact environmental conservation, public education, and labor protection laws. Opponents maintain that the right for workers to organize unions, worker’s compensation protections and previously negotiated state pension obligations can be in jeopardy. The most recent constitutional conventions were seen as mere duplications of previous legislative sessions, resulting in little change. If the constitution convention moves forward and the delegates propose amendments, it is anticipated that voters will consider adopting the amended New York Constitution at the polls on November 5, 2019.

Please remember to exercise your right to vote on November 7, 2017!

High School, My School! If your child is one of the 80,000 eighth graders in New York City, you are likely in the throes of (cue dramatic music) The High School Admission Process! The Department of Education (DOE) requires every student to apply to high school, and allows each child to list up to 12 choices (not including specialized schools like Staten Island Technical, Stuyvesant or LaGuardia), ranked in the order of their preference.

I

n the fall of eighth grade, students receive the NYC High School Directory, listing the 400+ high schools in New York City. Picking school is no easy task for a child, so it’s important to offer as much help as you can to make the process a smooth one. Since the task of choosing the right school is both an important and complicated one, most families jump-start their search in seventh grade. Start out by speaking with your son or daughter about their

18

interests and what their hopes are for their high school career. Explore considerations, such as the logistics of the commute, which academic programs the schools are noted for, and the extracurricular sports and activities available that match your child’s interests. Culinary Arts, Medical Technology, Software Engineering, Carpentry, Junior Reserve Officers’ Training, Theatre, Law & Politics – there is a match for just about every interest!

looking ahead It is a good idea to visit potential school choices with your child to get a sense of what to expect and how it feels to be part of the high school community. In October, your family can attend Borough High School Fairs and Open Houses to see the school first-hand and meet with staff and current students. Applications are due to guidance counselors by December of eighth grade, so your family should be well informed and ready to make a choice. Today’s students have many more options than those of just a few years ago, when the choices were limited to a local public school, a private high school, or a specialized high school. We know it can be daunting– and we’re here to help!

Applying to a Public High School

Here in Staten Island, there are 11 district high schools with 51 programs available, plus one Specialized High School program. Some programs cater to specific interests and skills while others focus on creating specific learning environments. Some of today’s choices include: Career and Technical Schools – These schools integrate academic study with workforce skills in specific career pathways. They offer students the opportunity to graduate high school with industry-specific competencies, skills, training, and even credentials that can lead to college or entry into the workforce. Through these programs, students have the opportunity to earn Advanced Regents diplomas. NYC P-TECH 9-14 Schools – These schools combine high school, college, and career training over the course of a six-year program. Students will graduate with a high school diploma, an Associate Degree from CUNY, and relevant industry certification. All college courses are free and the credits are transferable for postsecondary education. iZone Schools – These schools incorporate the latest strategies, tools, and technologies to personalize the needs, motivations, and strengths of individual students. iZone programs can include the implementation of online courses, technology-rich classrooms, and/or computer science coursework in the curriculum. Specialized High Schools – These are highly-selective public high schools designed to serve the needs of academically- and artistically-gifted students. With the exception of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School (where students are required to audition), admission is based on the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). If your child is considering attending one of the nine specialized schools in NYC, it is highly advisable to enroll in a prep courses or private tutoring specifically tailored to the strategies necessary for these tests. Charter Schools – These are free, independent public schools that are separate from the Department of Education. All students can apply and admittance is determined through a lottery. Preference is given to students who are already enrolled and students living in the charter school district. Some charter schools may have a longer school day, school year, and/or various thematic programs. There are currently

20

over 50 charter schools across New York City, three of which are located on Staten Island: John W. Lavelle Preparatory Charter School, New Ventures Charter School, and New World Preparatory Charter School. For more information on charter schools, visit nyccharterschools.org. Transfer Schools, Young Adult Borough Centers, or High School Equivalency Programs – These are small high schools designed to reengage students who have dropped out or fallen behind. Students with Disabilities – Students with disabilities may apply to all programs and are subject to the same admissions requirements as their peers. They may take the SHSAT and apply for all audition programs, including Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts. Testing accommodations will be provided during the SHSAT administration as outlined in the student’s IEP. Students interested in applying to a NYC public high school from a private or parochial school should speak with their guidance counselor in middle school.

looking ahead Applying to a Catholic High School

If you are considering a Catholic high school for your child, there are a variety of coeducational and single-sex schools, many of which offer partnerships with local Catholic colleges and universities. On Staten Island, there are seven Catholic High Schools – two are all boys, three are all girls, and two are co-ed. To apply to a Catholic High school, eighth grade students must take an admissions exam called TACHS (Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools). Registration is available online at www.tachsinfo.com or via telephone at 1-866-61TACHS, Mon-Fri from 8am-7pm, Sat-Sun from 10am-2pm. They may select three high schools on their application. The TACHS results, along with school records and other information, are then sent to the school’s principals to assist them in making their decision. Catholic School scholarships opportunities include those based on merit, financial need, and for students identified as “at risk” through the Inner-City Scholarship Fund. All scholarship inquiries and applications must be made through the school a student wishes to attend or is enrolled.

Special Needs Students – Bishop Patrick V. Ahern High School, under the Seton Foundation for Learning, is a private, special education program for students, ages 14-21 years old. It is accredited through the Department of Education of the Archdiocese of New York, and is open to all faiths and religions. Hosted by Moore Catholic High School, the students form many community partnerships to help with their academic, social and vocational training. Like fairs held for public high schools, students and parents are invited to visit the facilities and learn more about the programs offered. Fairs and Open Houses are generally scheduled prior to the TACHS exam date, but if you are unable to attend a one you should contact the school to set up an appointment. Need more help? If you would like to discuss the admission process, speak to your child’s guidance counselor directly. You can never have too much information—it’s the key to making good decisions!

Extracurricular Activities for High School Students With many high schools, colleges and universities emphasizing their goals of producing well-rounded students, many tweens and teens are viewing their interests outside the classroom as an important aspect of their academic résumé. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development. The important thing is to pursue activities that the student is passionate about, since their level of interest directly relates to the level of success they will achieve or the length of their commitment. Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report “Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?,” Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day.

24

october 2017

The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork, and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness. However, in the study “The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes,” researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for demographic factors and baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic

adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood. Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits from extracurricular activities can level off when too many activities are being juggled. If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities. It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well. Extracurricular activities should enrich a child’s life and provide a healthy means of exercise for mind and/or body. It is counterproductive if, in trying to “beef-up” their school applications, they are creating undue stress which can negatively affect their overall experience, both in and out of the classroom.

Halloween is a different kind of scary for thousands of children on Staten Island with food allergies. Teal Pumpkins help identify homes and locations that offer safe alternatives for trick-ortreaters with food allergies. Here’s how you can participate: Paint a pumpkin teal and place it on your porch or download and print a picture of a teal pumpkin as a sign to other families managing food allergies that you have non-food treats available at your home. Your teal pumpkin is also a way to raise awareness in your neighborhood about food allergies! Print your Teal Pumpkin sign at siparent.com. If you don’t have a color printer, just have the kids color it in.

feature / cyberbullying

how to protect your kids in a digital world october is national bullying prevention month Unlike old-school bullying, cyberbullying is not confined to school grounds, but can happen at any time and at any location. Cyberbullying is a serious issue, but as a parent, you can take control to keep your children safe. Cyberbullying is becoming more and more prevalent among children of all ages, and the best protection involves a combination of the tips below and utilizing parental monitoring technology like Bark.us to alert you and combat it.

32

october 2017

Cyber Bullying.indd 2

1 – Learn More For Yourself.

Cyberbullying takes many different shapes and forms (people impersonating others, Photoshopping photos, generating memes), so educate yourself about cyberbullying so you can spot it if it happens. 2 – Remember Password Protection.

Some cyberbullies hack into accounts to post offensive statuses, updates, photos, or videos to make it look like the account holder posted them. The best way to prevent this is to create a strong password and never give it to anyone other than parents. (Parents should always be given access to kids’ social media passwords.) 3 – Don’t Send Racy Photos. One of the best ways to protect kids from

cyberbullying is to remind them that they should never send racy photos, or any other texts, images, or videos that aren’t rated at least PG. 4 – Think Before You Post. Kids often say things that are out of character due to emotions. They make say mean things to or about someone they know, or they might even post a photo they find funny, but others could find offensive. Remind your kids to think about how their post might make others feel before they make it visible. 5 – Check Privacy Settings. Most social media providers offer a variety of privacy settings that allow you and your children to control who sees the things they post. Take the time to read about these settings and what they do,

9/21/17 1:03 PM

then decide together which are the most appropriate for your family. 6 – Don’t Open Messages From Strangers.

Cyberbullying isn’t always carried out by people your kids know. In fact, perfect strangers may bully your children, or they may pose as strangers to provide themselves with anonymity. Teach your kids to never open messages or accept “friend requests” from strangers. 7 – Don’t Log Into Accounts On Public Computers.

Remind your children that public computers are not safe when it comes to social media. Even if they log out after their sessions, things like keystroke loggers can remember passwords and status updates, which can compromise privacy and security. 8– Know The 5 Signs of Cyberbullying. • Emotionally agitated after getting off the internet

or their devices • Seems anxious or uneasy when they receive an alert or text message • Unwilling to hand over their devices • Change in mood, withdrawn, depressed, or often angry or anxious • Change in behavior, sleep patterns, or grades at school 9– Support And Address As A Team. Let your child know they can come to you about any concern they have, and you will address it together. If they feel like they can talk about their issues without you reacting in anger or being upset, they will be more likely to approach you if it is happening to them. It’s often hard for victims to reach out for help, so reinforcing that you are there for them (and staying calm) is extremely important. Next, figure out the response together. It is important to equip your child with the tools they need to know how to respond to bullies. Teach them to not engage the bully, but screenshot and save any message that contains threatening or hurtful remarks, as it may be important to have a paper trail if the situation escalates. Teach your child that they can, and should, report these instances to you, a teacher or any trusted adult. Then, discuss possible solutions together based on the specific circumstances.

Although there’s nothing that can protect your children from cyberbullying 100%, you can lessen the chances it will happen and help them stay safer online. These tips are a great start, so please make sure to talk about them with your tweens and teens right away. Question: Our family life is frenetic, between working, carpooling, attending meetings, shopping and all the children’s activities. I just don’t think we spend enough quality time with our children in elementary and middle school. I keep reading about how having family time together plays into our children’s success in school and even in later life. How can we find more quality family time? – For Family Time Answer: All the mental health experts will agree with you that quality family time is important. Besides increasing the bond between parents and children, it also makes for wonderful memories and leads to more positive behavior by children as well as success in school.

More and more parents, like you, are seeking ways to increase family time. It does take effort; there is no question about that. One of the best ways to begin is by making time for a family dinner. Parents might need to go to work earlier, and children may need to cut down the time spent on an activity. While it might not be possible for everyone to eat together every night, it should be possible to do so a few nights a week. Additionally, the family dinner needs to be a pleasant time where members share experiences. There should be rules such as: no television or phones, and no discussions of disciplinary issues. One time that is free for most families is brunch time on Sunday. This is another way to spend quality time with your children. Quality time can also be increased if both parents and children limit their activities. For example, a parent can drop out of a club, and children can reduce the number of their activities. Another way to increase quality time with your children is for both parents to initiate dates with individual children. Shared chores with parents and children working together is another opportunity for quality family time. A particularly sweet family time opportunity is to initiate bedtime chats with your children, especially younger ones.

Question: My daughter is working on phonemic awareness as part of her language arts block. What is phonemic awareness? How does it involve consonants and vowels? – Confused Answer: Phonemic awareness is a broad skill that includes identifying and manipulating speech sounds in English. The sounds of the English language are grouped into one of 40 or more speech sounds, and all sounds will fall into one of two categories: either a consonant sound or a vowel sound. There are 25 consonant sounds and 15 vowel sounds. If you are wondering what the difference is between a consonant sound and a vowel sound, it is the restriction of the flow of air when making the sound. Consonant sounds restrict the flow of air during production. For example, say “p,” “f” or “t.” However, when making a vowel sound, either long or short, the air flow is not restricted as you make the sounds “e,” “a” or “o.” Put your hands on your voice box and try saying a few consonant and vowel sounds, and you will be able to feel the difference. Phonemic awareness is an essential skill that children need to have both to be ready to read and to become readers in the lower elementary grades. Children with this skill are able to rhyme words and to recognize words with the same initial sounds, like “bad,” “back” and “ball.” Parents can help children develop phonemic awareness by reading books with rhymes to them and playing rhyming games. They can also ask them to identify words that begin with the same sound.

Question: Our elementary school’s parent/teacher conferences will be scheduled soon. Exactly what should I learn at them? – Wondering Answer: You should expect answers to most of the following questions. Be sure to take notes to help you remember what has been discussed. • What achievement or competency tests has my child taken in the past year? What do his or her scores on these tests mean? • What is my child’s ability level? • Is my child working at, above, or below grade level in such subjects as reading, mathematics, and language arts? • What group or groups is my child in? Why? • What are my child’s special strengths and weaknesses in his or her major subjects? • How would you describe my child’s work habits? Does he or she regularly complete classwork and homework? • Can we look over some of my child’s work together? • Are there discipline problems? How can they be improved or eliminated? • How well does my child get along with classmates and with the teacher? • Does my child need any special help with schoolwork or social adjustment? Who can provide this help? • What are the teacher’s recommendations for specific ways in which my child can improve his or her performance at school? • How can I help my child with any problems area?

cover story Tricks & Treats for Kids of All Ages

Are you looking for some hauntingly good Halloween fun to add to your traditional Trick-or-Treating? Well, Staten Island scares up tons of fun for kids of all ages! Whether your family is up for some cute and colorful costumed characters; fun-filled, family-oriented festivals, or scary and spooky -- yet safe and spectacular – home displays, Staten Island has plenty to choose from, both on October 31st and on the days and weeks leading up to Halloween. Many events are free; others require preregistration or advance tickets, but all are aimed at scaring up memorable family fun.

N

o authentic Halloween would be complete without trick-or-treating at some good, old-fashioned neighborhood “haunted” houses. Appropriately dubbed “Monster Manor” by its resident Halloween buff, Eddie Anguiano, his Port Richmond home at 96 Anderson Avenue comes alive with sound effects, props, music, and a cast of live, costumed creatures ready to add some spine-tingling fun for children young and old. This year, families are invited to stop by in costume and trick-or-treat a few days early while viewing his Halloween-inspired decorations on October 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. Anguiano will portray his favorite movie character, Jason from Friday the 13th, while his wife, Jeannine, his children, Marcos and Ava, along with family and friends, all take part in the action. Anguiano transforms his driveway, backyard, and surrounding exterior areas into a Halloween mecca complete with themed-sections, such as a creepy circus with scary clowns, zombies, spiders, and other ghoulish sights, as well as characters and attractions from classic Halloween movies, such as “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Halloween,” as well as the newly-released “It,” based on the novel by Stephen King, and the Netflix series “Stranger Things.” “I have always loved Halloween, so this is my Christmas and my Super Bowl in one,” said the 40-year-old retired firefighter and Monsignor Farrell High School graduate. “It’s a labor of love,” he said of bringing significance to what he believes is one of the last big holidays celebrated by neighbors together. Although the event is free, the Anguianos are accepting donations for the

Historic Richmond Town kicks off Halloween on October 27 with its “Halloween in Richmondtown” event that includes crafts, games, and activities from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine. Prepaid reservations are required and available at www.historicrichmondtown.org. Tickets are $12 per child and $6 per adult.

The spooky clown room is part of the Monster Manor at Eddie Anguiano’s home at 96 Anderson Avenue in Port Richmond.

Meanwhile, families are invited to take a stroll down Victory Boulevard between Manor Road and Jewett Avenue on October 29 for the Victory Boulevard Merchants’ Association’s annual “Trick-or-Treat on the Boulevard Halloween Fest” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children will receive snacks, treats, and goodies from local business owners along the route. The event is co-sponsored by Councilman Steve Matteo. Arts and crafts, bounce houses, face painting, and free pumpkins are a perfect way to jump-start the Halloween season, according to Silver Lake resident Jennifer Mayer who enjoys the event with her children. Halloween-inspired activities, contests, crafts, pumpkin picking, live music, and other activities will draw families to the 2nd Annual Halloween Festival on October 29 at noon, sponsored by the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. The free event is open to the public and will take place at 700 Father Capodanno Boulevard. For more information, go to www.oceanbreezenyc.org, or call 718-351-7923. Meanwhile, “The Halloween God,” also known as Daniel Rand, is preparing his much-anticipated laser light show, complete with animatronics, and digitally-advanced and state of the art technology at his Dongan Hills Halloween headquarters as he has for the past 27 years. He relishes the opportunity to share his creepy and creative display with hundreds of family, friends, and neighbors – especially since it is his daughter’s birthday. He transforms his

This year, he is planning to unveil the display between October 6 and October 13 – and it will be available for viewing in the evenings through Halloween, weather permitting. Before taking the kids in search of sugary treats in your own neighborhood, stop by and trick-or-treat at the free, three-hour “Halloween Hoopla” sponsored by Borough President James Oddo on October 31. Kids will enjoy a Halloween maze, a candy station, hay and pony rides, inflatables, a chalk zone, and other activities when Bloomingdale Park turns into “Boo-mingdale Park” from 2 to 5 p.m. at the intersection of Drumgoogle Road West and Maguire Avenue. The event, which is co-sponsored by Councilman Joe Borelli, will also feature spooky stories, a puppet mobile performing a show called “Cinderella Samba” courtesy of the New York City Parks Department, a costume parade, and live DJ music. Marissa Buono, Rossville, plans to revisit the park this year with her two-and-ahalf-year-old daughter and her six-year-old nieces, who will be dressed as characters from “The Descendants 2.” The kids loves the bounce houses, tattoos,

In Snug Harbor, a costume parade is the highlight of a Halloween event at The Staten Island Children’s Museum on October 28 from noon to 4 p.m. that includes activities, workshops, and trick-or-treating, as well as spooky stories, villainous mad science activities, and a Monster Mash dance. The museum is located at 1000 Richmond Terrace on the grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center. For more information, www.sichildrensmuseum.org. In addition, one of the borough’s most well-known and popular events among young Halloween fans is the annual “Staten Island Zoo Spooktacular.” The Zoo, located at 614 Broadway, has a family-friendly, two-night event on October 14 and 15 with activities and performances that sells out every year quickly and requires advance tickets. Experts agree, when you’re expecting, exercise is important. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends at least 20 to 30 minutes a day on most or all days as it reduces the risk of gestational diabetes, preterm birth, preeclampsia (pregnancy-induced high blood pressure), having a high birth weight baby, and the need for a cesarean section. It may also improve the baby’s brain development. Pregnant women who exercise also tend to have less back pain, more energy, and are more likely to have an easier labor and delivery experience and return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster. Here are 5 tips for working out while pregnant:

Avoid dangerous sports.

3. Don’t lie flat on your back.

Perhaps more important than knowing which exercises to do is knowing which ones to avoid. Pregnant women should avoid contact sports such as basketball or soccer or activities that may cause you to fall such as downhill skiing, horseback riding, surfing, or mountain biking. Scuba diving should also be avoided because although there isn’t any conclusive evidence to determine the effects, the change in pressure might impact baby’s development.

After the first trimester, avoid exercising while lying flat on your back. The weight of your uterus puts pressure on a major vein called the vena cava, which can reduce blood flow to your heart, brain and uterus, leaving you dizzy, short of breath or nauseated.

2. Hydrate. It’s important to drink water before, during, and after exercising. Otherwise, you risk a reduction in the amount of blood going to the placenta. Dehydration can also increase your risk of overheating or even trigger contractions.

5. Get the right gear. Opt for loose-fitting and breathable clothing. You can also dress in layers so it’s easy to peel off a layer or two after you’ve warmed up or if you get overheated. Also make sure your maternity bra is supportive enough, and choose athletic shoes that fit properly.

4. Eat enough. Most moms-to-be need around 300 extra calories a day during pregnancy, so make sure you’re not burning too much off during your workouts.

should sports programs matter when choosing a high school? father and son share opposing views Local sportswriter Joe LoVerde coached youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. The high school a young athlete attends may have an effect on his or her sports future, especially if he or she hopes to play a sport in college. Just how much weight should you and your child place on a high school’s sports program when choosing a school? Should sports be considered at all? That’s something my son and I are both familiar with, and each of us has our own opinion. Here’s how we stand on that topic. Mike says … Yes, definitely. While it’s important to focus on your child’s academic success to help them get into a good college, keep in mind that sports can do the same thing. Colleges are looking for student-athletes to help their programs succeed, and one of those schools could be the next home for your child.

If your son or daughter is interested in going to college to play a sport as well as earn a degree, it’s important that he or she make his or her mark in high school sports. When thinking about choices for schools, think about your child’s talent level compared to the rest of the competition. For example, your son could be the second best quarterback on Staten Island and wants to attend the same school that the best quarterback on the Island is attending. The other athlete probably will get most of the playing time, limiting your son’s exposure to college recruiters. Also, the school with the winningest program might not be the best fit for your child. Chances are that if a program is successful year after year, that school will have a large student enrollment and, most likely, the toughest competition for a spot on the team.

9/21/17 1:15 PM

The biggest thing college recruiters want to see is how you perform in games. They will research your statistics, which is why playing time is crucial. College coaches are less likely to take the players who didn’t play much in high school. If your child hasn’t had a growth spurt yet or hasn’t peeked as an athlete, going to a school with a smaller enrollment and a smaller sports talent pool will give your son or daughter a better chance of not being overlooked. And they are more likely to be given the time to grow physically and as a player. If your child does hope to play for his or her high school team, meet with the coaches at the open house events and feel them out for how many students usually try out and what your chances of making the team would be. And gauge the coach’s personality and manner, since that person will be playing a key role in whether or not playing on that team is an enjoyable experience. Joe says … Absolutely not.

FALL SPECIAL

Although playing a high school sport can enhance the scholastic experience, it makes the most sense to focus on academics when choosing a high school. Your child is going to school to get an education, after all. It isn’t necessary to play in high school to get noticed by the colleges or pros. Former big league baseball star Bobby Bonilla never played for his high school team. Neither did current Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo. The growth of travel and AAU sports programs has created another avenue to be noticed. College coaches attend many of the tournaments where these teams play, as well as showcase events that give high school-aged athletes a chance to show their stuff in front of the recruiters or scouts. Also, as long as your child is on a team, she can shop herself to colleges. If the travel team has a website with statistics, that information can be sent to a coach at a prospective school. You can make a brief video showing your son or daughter’s skills in different areas of the game and forward a link for that video to the coach. Or you can have your child attend college showcase events. Being on a high school sports team may have its rewards, and certainly can make one’s time in high school more fun. But not playing on a high school team does not mean the end of sports for your child.

Candy Buy Back

Check out our Fall Fun Guide on page 26 for more events.

Swap some candy and support our troops

Let’s face it—trick-or-treating is fun, cavities are not. Instead of gobbling up all those sweet treats, get your kids to do something even sweeter with their stash. In the annual Halloween Candy Buy Back, dentists “buy back” candy from generous youngsters in exchange for cash, coupons, or other creative currencies. The collected candy is then distributed to military support groups and shipped to service members abroad. To learn more about this wonderful initiative, which is now in its 12th year, go to www.HalloweenCandyBuyBack.com. Pre-Carving Pumpkin Prep: 1.Clean the pumpkin - Prep the pumpkin first by rinsing it in cold water and using a scrub brush to remove dirt. If you want, you can spray the entire pumpkin with a mild bleach and water solution to kill mold and bacteria. 2.Cut out the lid - Use a sturdy knife to slowly and carefully carve out and remove the lid of the pumpkin, going in at an angle rather than straight down in. Alternatively, you can cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin, which will mean you can sit your pumpkin on top of a light rather than placing a light inside the pumpkin. 3.Clean out the guts - Use a scoop to completely empty the inside of the

www.siparent.com

pumpkin of flesh and seeds. Keep scraping away at the inner walls of the pumpkin until you only have about a 1” (2.5cm) thick pumpkin wall that is nice and smooth. 4.Attach the pattern -Transfer the pattern using your desired method. Check out Easy Pumpkin Carving for tons of patterns to choose from. Carving Tips: • Saw steadily with a continuous up and down motion, and don’t press too hard or try to go too fast. • When you’re finished cutting out a standalone piece (like an eye), pop it out of the pumpkin wall with your finger, not your carving tool. • To cut clean, sharp corners, remove and reinsert the carving tool.

• Carve starting from the inside of the design and working your way outward. • Resist the urge to put your free hand inside the pumpkin while carving. Only do so if you can clearly see where all of your hand is. • If you accidentally break off a part of your carving as you work, such as a protruding tooth, stick it back on with a toothpick! Preserve Your Pumpkin: Keep your carved pumpkin cool and out of the direct sunlight (you can even put it in the fridge). You can also coat the interior and all cut edges with petroleum jelly to help lock in the pumpkin’s natural moisture, or purchase special preservative sprays for pumpkins. the rewards of having a wired grandparent keep up with grandchildren by keeping up with technology Lucky kids get to spend face-time with grandparents. But what happens to those relationships when families live far away or even across town?

Award-winning columnist and author Carolyn Jabs, M.A. helps parents understand issues our kids are facing in the digital world. Read more columns @ www.siparent.com/growinguponline

OCTOBER 2017

For grandparents who are willing to stretch a little, tablets and smartphones can be a powerful ally in building close, ongoing relationships. Often parents can facilitate this connection. If you live within easy driving distance, consider setting up equipment and enlisting older kids to do a little training with their grandparents. For long-distance grandparents, think about giving a gift certificate for an Internet class at the local senior center or hiring a guru for an afternoon. The AARP website has an entire section devoted to personal technology (www.aarp.org/home-family/ personal-technology/) Even when the technology gap seems daunting, it’s worth bridging. Grandchildren will appreciate grandparents who can send an animated instant message as well as the obligatory birthday card, guide a surfing expedition as well as a fishing trip, post photos on a website as well as the refrigerator door. Helping your parent master just one of the skills listed below is likely to strengthen the connection between

generations in ways that are nourishing for your parents and your kids. Send a message. Most grandparents are acquainted with email, so it seems like an easy way tell a child “I’m thinking about you.” A surprising number of kids, however, never even open their email. Instead, introduce grandparents to text messages or the messaging options in social media. These messages are more rewarding for kids because of their immediacy, and once grandparents get the hang of this, they are often enthusiastic correspondents. They may even want to learn the lingo at internetlingo.com or noslang.com. Try video chat. Adding video to a conversation is a special treat especially when kids are little and changing every week. Now that smartphones include taping options, grandparents may also want to experiment with creating little videos especially for kids—singing a favorite lullaby, reading a book that parents loved when they were young or even telling older children stories about the good old days. Become a surf master. There are lots of fascinating and informative websites for kids, but kids

www.siparent.com

Growing up online.indd 2

often have a hard time finding them. A grandparent with just a little search expertise can perform a valuable service by sorting through the debris and sending a grandchild the gems. A good place to start is the American Library Association’s Great Websites for Kids (gws.ala.org). Common Sense Media also has terrific recommendations about age-appropriate apps and websites as well as books, movies, TV, games, and music. (commonsensemedia.org). Pointing a child to a well-chosen website is also a way to build a shared interest in favorite hobbies such as genealogy, sports, travel, or gardening. Create an album. Anyone who uses Gmail can create a shared photo album. For instructions, visit support.google.com/photos. Grandparents may also enjoy creating customized family albums at sites like shutterfly.com, snapfish.com, mixbook.com and picaboo. com. For those whose technical skills are limited, digital photo frames can be a great way to display an endless slide show of photos that can be updated as kids grow. Play games. Generations of kids have learned to play checkers, rummy, scrabble, battleship, and other classic games in the company of grandparents. Now this tradition continues with apps where these games and many others can be played online without cost. Some grandparents may take an interest in the latest craze, but many will find it easier to play the old favorites. App Crawler (appcrawlr.com) has lists of the 100 best old-fashioned games for both Apple and Android. One caveat: Avoid sites featuring casino games. Even when they are “free,” they create an unhealthy interest in gambling. Build a blog. A grandparent trying to keep up with grandchildren in several places may discover blogging is a perfect solution. At sites like wordpress.com, tumblr.com or blogspot.com, seniors can write longer messages illustrated with photos. Grandparents can chronicle their travels, share favorite recipes or jokes, or muse about current (or past) events. Be sure to set privacy settings so only family members and friends can see what’s written and then invite grandkids to respond with messages of their own. Not only does this keep grandparents connected to grandkids but it may also build bonds between cousins and even their parents. Get social. Grandparents with teenage grandchildren probably worry about Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Snapchat. With just a little effort, they can play a valuable role in helping young people make wise decisions about how they want to present themselves online. Perhaps the best way to do this is to encourage grandparents to set up their own social media page. Then he or she can invite friends, including grandkids, to join the page. Some teens may reciprocate but others won’t. That’s OK. Simply asking for a grandchild’s advice about how to build such a site gives grandparents an opportunity to join the conversation about what should and shouldn’t posted in cyberspace and why. In fact, grandparents who become informed about the Internet can often back-up parents by talking to kids about what they do online and reminding them of safety rules. Although technology won’t ever be a substitute for curling up in a grandparent’s lap to read a favorite book or sharing a freshly baked batch of cookies, wired relationships do have their own unique rewards. Introducing grandparents to those possibilities is one way for parents to promote the intergenerational connections that are so good for everyone involved.
