S.I. LIVING Community & School News The TD Five Boro Bike Tour It’s the day bicyclists look forward to all year long. The TD Five Boro Bike Tour has been a major New York City event for both cyclists and onlookers since it started in 1977. The tour kicks off Sunday, May 3 in lower Manhattan and finishes at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island. The Finish Festival will include games, giveaways, music, food, and fun for everyone. If your plans that day don’t include a bicycle, you’ll want to steer clear of traveling to other boroughs. The Verrazano Bridge will be closed for the duration of the tour.

S.I. Ferry Service Boost Commuting to work will soon be smooth sailing for Staten Islanders who travel via ferry to Manhattan during off-peak hours. Mayor De Blasio has announced a plan to increase Staten Island Ferry service to eventually run every half hour around the clock. Starting May 1, six round trips will be added Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings. The mayor says he hopes the new ferry schedule will “help Staten Islanders work, grow businesses on the island, and bring us closer to a day where every New Yorker has access to frequent, reliable public transit.”

NYC Neighborhood Library Awards Congratulations to the Stapleton Library, one of ten finalists in the 2nd annual NYC Neighborhood Library Awards! Five branches will be selected to win $20,000 each, the largest cash prize awarded directly to branch libraries in the nation. Over 13,000 nominations rolled in from library users. The winners will be announced this month. Last year, Staten Island’s own New Dorp Library was one of the five winners. Our fingers are crossed for Stapleton this year!

S.I. LIVING Community & School News As a non-profit organization with a volunteeronly staff, Staten Island Fleet Week relies solely on donations to fund its programs and events. They are also in need of corporate sponsors. Go to siparent.com to learn how you can donate, sponsor, or volunteer to help out.

Prom Dresses for Those in Need Every girl deserves a prom night she will never forget, and the Staten Island-based non-profit organization Where to Turn is helping to make that happen. They are once again running their annual prom dress drive, when they collect new and used prom dresses to distribute to those who can’t afford to purchase a dress of their own. Where to Turn has collected over 1,500 dresses over the past few years and hopes to see another successful year. If you would like to contribute a new or gently used dress, shoes or appropriate accessory, send it to Where to Turn, 150-L Greaves Lane #312, SI, NY 10308 or visit siparent.com for a list of other drop-off locations. Dresses can be picked up at those locations as well.

Organic Waste Collection Have you ever heard the expression “If you’re not recycling, you’re throwing it all away?”The NYC Department of Sanitation is hoping to take recycling a step further by expanding the NYC Organics voluntary curbside food and yard waste recycling program, adding neighborhoods in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island later this spring. The program offers New Yorkers an easy way to recycle their food, food-soiled paper, and yard debris – which make up about a third of the city’s trash. Currently, the program serves more than 100,000 households in all five boroughs. This expansion will add approximately 35,000 new households. The pilot program began in May 2013 on Staten Island, and more than 6,500 tons of material has been collected since then.

20

MAY 2015

www.siparent.com

The added neighborhoods in Staten Island include Castleton Corners, Port Richmond, and West Brighton. All single-family homes and buildings with nine or fewer residential units will be automatically enrolled in the voluntary program. All eligible households will receive a starter kit, which includes an indoor kitchen container, an instruction brochure, and either their own outdoor brown bin or a larger one to share for the building. Visit siparent.com for a link to more information.

S.I. LIVING Community & School News S.I. Mall Overhaul Make some extra room in your wallet; your shopping trips are about to get bigger. That’s because the Staten Island Mall is getting a lot bigger. Plans were announced recently to expand the currently 1.2 square million foot property by another 427,000 square feet. The multi-million dollar overhaul will include interior and exterior upgrades, new fashion retailers, restaurants, a cinema, Fairway Market, and a public piazza for guests to gather and enjoy year round. The redevelopment is expected to create 1,500 new jobs and spur enormous local economic growth. The project is expected to be completed by 2017.

St. Clare’s Robot Champs Congratulations and good luck to St. Clare’s Transformers’ Team 2, a group of bright students who build robots utilizing their exceptional skills in science, math, computer engineering and design. The team will be participating in the First Lego League Razorback Invitational International Tournament at the University of Arkansas May 1417. After winning first place in the Staten Island Lego Robotics Challenge at New Dorp High School in February, the team went on to take the Champion’s Award at the regional competition at the Jacob Javits Center in March, thus earning their spot at the upcoming tournament.

I Love My Park Day Do you love your park? Then show it! Volunteer to participate in the fourth annual I Love My Park Day, which will be held on Saturday May 2 at state parks and historic sites across New York. The day is designated each year to celebrate, improve, and enhance state parks and historic sites, to boost volunteerism, and to raise visibility of the entire state parks systems and its needs. Last year, more than 6,000 volunteers pitched in on cleanup and beautification of sites from Montauk Point to Niagara Falls. In Staten Island, Clay Pit Ponds State Park Reserve will be participating. Volunteers can join the staff in a park-wide cleanup, picking up trash around the outskirts of the park and on the trails, and spreading mulch and weeding. All ages are welcome; meet at the Interpretive Center at 2351 Veterans Road West. Visit siparent.com for a link to more information.

The event, now in its fourth year, will be held at the Richmond County Ball Park on Sunday, May 18 from noon to 5pm (rain date: June 1). For children who are sensitive to the loud noise, they offer two quiet “no honk” hours at 1pm and 3pm. All proceeds will benefit the Staten Island Children’s Campaign. Tickets are $7 in advance and $8 at the gate. Visit siparent.com for a link to purchase tickets.

Thanks to Screen-Free Week, you will have the opportunity to change that. Screen-Free Week was started in an effort to get families to enjoy life beyond the screen. From May 4 to May 10, kids should be encouraged unplug all of their devices and go outside, play a sport, read a book, or simply spend quality time with family and friends. FINDING MY WAY BACK TO FINE

epression is a funny little illness. Because you look and feel like you’ve been through the spin cycle of a washing machine, yet everyone keeps telling you that you’re totally fine. You’re fine, your family says. You’re fine, your friends say. You’re fine, the doctor says. You’re healthy, your family is healthy, and everything is perfectly fine in your life.

D

If you’re supposedly so fine, then why don’t you feel fine? Why, instead, do you feel like every moment awake is an assault on your mind and body, like the very act of taking air into your lungs is earth-shatteringly terrifying, and like you are no longer even living inside of yourself, but instead just functioning as a separate, mindless entity, numbly hovering over your former self in the meager hope that someday you can return and feel, dare I say, normal again?

EXTREME FEELINGS OF ISOLATION AND UNHAPPINESS AFTER CHILDBIRTH OR A MISCARRIAGE CAN BE A SIGN OF POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION, A CONDITION AFFECTING UP TO 16% OF WOMEN.

And all the while, as you’re feeling increasingly un-fine, the world around you is spinning away. People are still living their lives, still going to work, still caring for their children, still eating and sleeping and smiling and laughing every day. They’re doing all the things you did back when you really were fine. Except now, everyone else is fine. They go right on living while you teeter dangerously on the brink of insanity, wondering how you’ll make it another day, another hour, even another minute.

and retelling the events of that day is simply impossible to do without conveying just how dramatic it all felt at the time. But in reality, I’d been only eight weeks along, was quite optimistic that I could conceive again soon, and honestly thought I was going to be okay. I mean, much worse things have happened to people much more misfortunate than myself. So after about ten miserable hours in a dim hospital room, I went home and crawled into bed, exhausted and sad but feeling that the worst of it was over. Or so I thought.

I had my miscarriage in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner. I had watched the parade in the morning, dressed my son in his holiday finest, then drove over to my mom’s house and sat down with my family at the table to eat. Sometime between my first stuffed mushroom and second slice of turkey, I began to feel the stabbing pangs of labor pain. Two terrifying hours later, I emerged from an emergency room bathroom stall with a tiny, balled-up fetus wrapped inside of a sanitary napkin. Horrified and shaking, I handed it to the triage nurse, who told me I was running a fever and needed to calm down.

I did not know, at that point, that postpartum depression could happen after a miscarriage, even one occurring in just the first trimester. I didn’t know that the overflow of hormones coursing through my body after this event – combined with the severe loneliness brought on by a harsh winter, a young child who needed more from me than I could possibly give at the time, and a hardworking husband who was never home – would lead me into a frightening downward spiral so intense that I am still recovering from it today.

Please don’t feel sorry for me. My story is only seemingly dramatic because hospitals, blood, and death tend to fill me with sheer terror,

My husband used to leave for work around 6a.m., and I’d wake up at 5a.m. just to savor the only adult company I’d enjoy all day until he returned, already half-asleep, around 9p.m. Those mornings I’d sit on the floor of the foggy bathroom while he showered for work and we’d chitchat back and forth. It was the closest to normal that I would feel all

day. Then I’d climb back into bed when he left, around the same time my son would usually wake up, and we’d watch cartoons together until the sun came up. And then I’d brace myself for a very long, lonely, dreary, anxietyridden day.

The darkest period of my life was like one, long, drawn-out anxiety attack. I’ve struggled with anxiety my entire life, but never like this. My days were spent pacing the floors of my three-room apartment for hours at a time, fingers tearing at the hair behind my neck and pulling until it bled. I’d clutch the phone in my hands and cry, praying for it to ring, wishing for someone to talk to, anyone at all who could distract me from my personal hell for a moment or two. I’d open every shade and curtain in the house, hoping the daylight might flood my home and chase my shadowy demons away. I’d wait by the window, praying, begging, pleading for my husband to pull up in his car and save me from the bitter, paralyzing loneliness. One morning, after I’d gotten out of bed, I fainted as I poured my son’s breakfast cereal. It could have been from dehydration, or anxiety, or maybe just plain hunger, as I hadn’t been able to force down more than a slice or two of bread in about two days. I quickly awoke to find my son, confused and visibly upset, pleading with me to get up. At that point, I really needed help. For my little boy, my sweet, innocent, scared little child, I had to come out of this. I simply had to. There was just no other way. Recovery was a gradual process. With the help of my family, some medication, and a whole lot of self-discipline and self-discovery, I eventually began to feel like myself again. The following March, I was thrilled to learn that my daughter was on the way. This was a blessing for more than just the obvious reasons, because it forced me to stop taking my medication and learn to heal entirely on my own. Honestly, I didn’t even think I was capable of healing on my own until I had no other choice. If I hadn’t gotten pregnant, I may have grown overly dependent on that medication. So I believe my little girl saved me from what might have been a different kind of downward spiral. My little girl saved my life. You don’t need to be a parent to find yourself coping with depression, although I know many are. You don’t need to be married, divorced, employed, unemployed, grieving, sick, healthy, rich, or poor. You don’t need to have any reason at all. For many of us,

depression and anxiety are simply things we struggle with every single day. They’re as real to us as breathing. Your depression affects everyone around you, whether you realize it or not: your family, your children, your friends, your job. Sometimes people understand, but most of the time, they don’t. If you’re lucky, someone will see you struggling, and they’ll reach out to you. If you’re really lucky, you’ll find a place within yourself where healing can begin on its own – where you can realize how much the people in your life need you – and you can learn to be you again. My journey is an ongoing one. Some days are good, some not so much. I know I’ll never be 100 percent better. But I’ll never stop trying, either. There has been an increase in the number of children who develop food allergies. A study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that food allergies among children have increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011. It is important for parents to recognize potential food allergies in their children and to know the difference between food allergies and intolerance. When a child has an allergic reaction to food, the body's immune system views the food as a foreign substance (allergen) and creates antibodies to protect the body. Once the food is reintroduced there is an antigen (allergen)antibody reaction and the allergic reaction. The body releases a substance called histamine. Histamine dilates blood vessels and makes the vessel walls abnormally permeable resulting in swelling and inflammation anywhere in the body including the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, or cardiovascular system. These symptoms might include a runny nose; an itchy skin rash; tingling in the tongue, lips, or throat; swelling; abdominal pain, vomiting; or wheezing. Antihistamines work by preventing the release of histamine from certain cells (mast cells) thereby blocking the allergic reaction. Symptoms of a food allergy can range from mild to severe. Just because an initial reaction causes few problems doesn’t mean that all reactions will be similar; a food that triggered only mild symptoms on one occasion may cause more severe symptoms at another time. The most severe allergic reaction is anaphylaxis – a life-threatening wholebody allergic reaction that can impair your breathing, cause a dramatic drop in your blood pressure and affect your heart rate. Anaphylaxis can come on within minutes of exposure to the trigger food, even small amounts. It can be fatal and must be treated promptly with an injection of epinephrine.

How Do I Recognize Food Allergies In My Children?

www.siparent.com

Food intolerance is not a true food allergy because there isn’t any immune mechanism involved. It often is delayed and can occur after eating a large amount of the offending agent. It is not life threatening. A common example of food intolerance is lactose intolerance. Lactose is the carbohydrate in milk. Lactose intolerance is an example of a food intolerance that is often confused with a food allergy. Lactose intolerance occurs when a child has trouble digesting the milk carbohydrate (lactose) because he/she doesn’t produce enough of the enzyme necessary to break it down. As a result your child can have loose stool, abdominal pain and bloating.

Common Food Allergies Your child may be allergic to any food, but these eight common allergens account for 90% of all reactions in children: Cow milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Soy, Wheat, Nuts from trees (such as walnuts, pistachios, pecans), Fish (such as tuna, salmon, cod), Shellfish (such as shrimp, lobster) Peanuts, nuts, and seafood are the most common causes of severe reactions. Allergies also occur to other foods such as meats, fruits, vegetables, grains, and seeds such as sesame.

The good news is that children often outgrow food allergies during early childhood. It is estimated that by the age of five, 80% to 90% of egg, milk, wheat, and soy allergies resolve. Some allergies are more persistent. There is resolution of allergic symptoms in about 20% of people with allergies to peanuts and about 10% of those allergic to tree nuts. Fish and shellfish allergies usually develop later in life and are persistent. Your pediatrician or allergist can perform tests to identify and track your child's food allergies. How do I know if my child has a food allergy?

Proudly serving the Staten Island Community for Over 6 Years!

Symptoms of a food allergy When the body's immune system reacts to certain foods, the following symptoms may occur:

Skin problems • Hives (red spots that look like mosquito bites) • Itchy skin rashes (eczema / atopic dermatitis) • Swelling

Breathing problems • Sneezing • Wheezing • Throat tightness

Stomach symptoms • Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhea

Circulation symptoms • Pale skin • Light-headedness • Loss of consciousness If several areas of the body are affected, the reaction may be severe or even life-threatening. This type of allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis and requires immediate medical attention.

Diagnosing a Food Allergy If you suspect that your child might have a food allergy, contact your doctor. To diagnose an allergy, the doctor will likely inquire about: • your child's symptoms • how often the reaction occurs • the time it takes between eating a particular food and the start of the first symptoms • whether any family members have allergies or conditions like eczema and asthma Your pediatrician or allergist will look for any other conditions that could cause the symptoms. For example, if your child seems to have diarrhea after drinking milk, the doctor may check to see if lactose intolerance could be the cause rather than a food allergy. Celiac disease—a condition in which a person cannot tolerate gluten, a protein found in wheat and certain other grains—also can mimic the symptoms of food allergies. If your pediatrician suspects a food allergy, you will likely be referred to a specialist in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.

UNIQUE GIFT IDEAS FOR MOM

hether she's still hard at work raising children or her kids have grown up and now have children of their own, Mom deserves our best efforts come Mother's Day. While traditional gifts like flowers, chocolate, or a trip to a favorite restaurant might make for thoughtful Mother's Day gifts, those who want to try something different for Mom this year can consider the following unique gift ideas:

W

• Concert tickets: Many adults recall the days of their youth when they would relax while listening to some of their favorite music on a lazy summer afternoon. Why not take a stroll down Memory Lane and take Mom to see one of her favorite acts in concert? Even if you have outgrown Mom's musical tastes, she will still appreciate the chance to spend an evening out on the town with her kids and some good music.

MAKE MOM FEEL SPECIAL WITH A GIFT FROM THE HEART.

• Theater tickets: If Mom is a fan of live theater, then nothing will elicit a bigger smile than tickets to a Broadway show she has had her eyes on. If the price of tickets is too steep, consider off-Broadway, or a local theater production. Still have your heart set on Broadway? Do your homework and find discounts, coupons or special offers online. If you are more interested in the experience of Broadway than seeing any one particular show, plan a day trip that begins with a visit to the TKTS booth for half-price tickets. You won’t know what’s available until you are there, but you're still bound to see an unforgettable show Mom will love! • Parts unknown. Moms who love to travel and experience other cultures would certainly appreciate a trip abroad or a domestic getaway to a region of the country they have yet to explore. Before

booking any such trips, speak to your Mom and ask if there's anywhere in particular she'd like to go. Such trips can be expensive, so adults might want to speak to their siblings and finance such an excursion together. • Spa treatment. If Mom is still as active as ever, then a day of pampering at a nearby spa is sure to please. Many luxury spas offer packages, especially around Mother's Day, that make a full-on spa treatment a more affordable gift. Men and women can even accompany Mom on her trip and reap the rewards of being such a thoughtful son or daughter. • Make it a Home Spa. Create a Zen-like atmosphere in your own home. What mom wouldn’t relish a day of peace and tranquility at home, while her family treats her like royalty? Perhaps she’d enjoy an unhurried bubble bath. Or buy her a novel and give her time to relax in a lounge chair to read it. Keep music subtle and soothing, and bring her treats like fresh fruit and glasses of water with lemon or cucumber. Feeling adventurous? Offer to brush her hair or polish her toenails.

• Personal Gift Basket - What is her absolute favorite thing in the world? Create a personal gift basket filled with items relating to the thing she loves most. Whichever theme you choose, she'll appreciate the thought and effort you put into creating the perfect gift basket for her. • Gifts for the eco-conscious mom. Most moms cherish any gift from their children, whether lavish or simple. A nice, eco-friendly gift is to spend time together. Research local parks or hiking trails and plan a day where you both commune with nature. Or even head to the seaside for a relaxing day. • Waking up to a special treat. Few gestures of affection create such a stir as presenting a loved one with breakfast in bed. The surprise of breakfast in bed is almost as important as the presentation, so be sure everyone rises early enough to help prepare the meal secretly and has it ready for when Mom wakes up. For the most part, adult supervision is important when cooking is involved, although older children can handle a simple menu. Juice and cereal, a muffin or yogurt can be just as charming when presented by little ones on a tray with a homemade card and a flower or two. • Clean her car. Surprise mom by washing her car. Don’t forget to clean up the inside too! Get out the hand vac to get to all those spilled Cheerios and Goldfish crackers. Organize all the sports equipment into buckets. Use containers or bags for crayons, drawing pads, and other small items. Collect the empty water bottles and don’t forget to recycle. Couple this with a gift card for a tank of gas and a new air freshener and you’ve got a really nice themed gift. Now maybe she won’t mind all the time she spends in the car taking you places!

STEPPING OUT ON THE STEPMOTHER JOURNEY

eaning close to me, the counselor quietly began to speak. I expected encouraging comments and wise counsel on how to cope with the constant struggle of stepmothering. Instead I heard words that didn't make sense to me. "I know it's difficult at times, but you might consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to be part of raising your stepchildren."

L

What? Is he crazy? My thoughts took over and I couldn't respond for fear of what might come out of my mouth. Was he listening to my heartfelt cry for help? Parenting stepchildren can feel more like a burden than a privilege at times. We have the responsibility of a parent with few parental rights. Fold the laundry. Cook dinner. Run the carpool. Despite our efforts toward mundane parenting tasks, we get little regard as a parent, or appreciation for our help.

MOTHER'S DAY CAN BE DIFFICULT FOR STEPMOMS AS IT REMINDS THEM OF THE TIME AND ENERGY THEY INVEST IN THEIR STEPCHILDREN, BUT MIGHT INCLUDE FEW REWARDS.

So, how do we learn to embrace our role as a stepmother? A few key steps can help us thrive and gain confidence with the expectations placed on us. 1. Be your own person. Don't try to replace or compete with the biological mom. It's okay to be different. I recently watched my friend, a new stepmom, painstakingly mold herself into someone she hoped her stepdaughter would love and accept. Unfortunately, she created a bitter stepmom persona instead of a vested loving relationship. When we are comfortable with our unique identity, we yield confidence for new relationships. 2. Work harder at being a friend rather than a parent, particularly in the beginning. The primary goal for new stepparents is to develop a loving, trusting relationship with your stepchild. Find common ground that allows time together comfortably. Let the biological parent take the lead in disciplining during the relationship-building period. Moving into a parental role too soon results in anger and resentment. 3. Forgive yourself when you fail. You will mess up as a stepparent. During our early years of marriage, I was easily irritated with the shortcomings of my stepchildren. I reacted in favor of my biological children during times of conflict and was frustrated with my lack of patience and fairness toward my stepchildren. As I sought to forgive myself for my mistakes and learn from my failures, I could pick myself up and begin again with positive strides in my stepparenting role.

40

MAY 2015

www.siparent.com

4. Make your marriage a priority. It's easy to allow struggles with the kids to interfere with your marital relationship. Stay connected in tough times by taking intentional steps to work through conflict and create a united front. Recognize the challenge of blending a family and seek professional help if you reach an impasse in your relationships. 5. Allow plenty of time for new relationships to develop. Strive for love and acceptance of one another, but don't expect harmony overnight. The average stepfamily takes seven years to integrate. Complex stepfamilies (when both parents bring children to the marriage) can take longer. But there are rewards on our stepmom journey as we learn to love and be loved by our stepchildren. After 20 years as a stepmother, I experience far more rewards than burdens. I can honestly say, "It's been a privilege to take part in raising my stepchildren." I'm thankful for the healing that has occurred in our relationships and look forward to the years ahead as our family continues to grow and mature, embracing my role as a stepmother. By Gayla Grace, who treasures her role as mom and stepmom to five children, ages 14-30. She loves to encourage stepfamilies through her website and blog at www.stepparentingwithgrace.com.

In fact, you never know when you might see Chre with 10-year-old Victoria, 8-year-old Dominic and 6-year-old Sabrina jogging around their Bulls Head neighborhood or at road races both on Staten Island, the other boroughs or out of state. They don’t do it for the medals, although their house is filled with them. They don’t do it for the exercise, although that is certainly a positive byproduct. Quite simply, Chre said, “My kids love to run.” It started with mom, who fell back into running — something she had done 20 years earlier at Sheepshead Bay HS in Brooklyn, when she also captained the cheerleading squad, played softball and bowled — merely out of desperation. It was February 2013. Genao’s dad had just been diagnosed with cancer, nine years after she had lost her mom to the disease. She was dealing with a recent divorce, a move to Staten Island and being a single, working mom. “It might be a Georgian cliché, but I was stressed out with life,” Genao said. “One night, when I was particularly overwhelmed, I decided to just go for a run.” She didn’t know where or how long, but she put on a pair of sweats and sneakers, and headed out the door. She quickly became hooked. Genao began running regularly, and set a goal to run the New York City Marathon that year. She entered some local races, toting her children with her. She joined the Staten Island Athletic Club. Before she knew it, she said, “my kids got interested, too.” The three little ones entered some of the children’s races that accompany the longer competitive events and started joining Genao on some of her training runs. These days, the kids even compete in some of the same events as their mom and have fared quite well. Tiny Sabrina has completed a 5K (3.1-mile) race in 32 minutes, 32 seconds. Dominic has run that distance in 24:14. And Victoria, Chre’s speedster, has done the mile in 7:18. Chre, meanwhile, has completed a bunch of half-marathons, reached her goal of running in the New York City Marathon in 2013 and did it again last year in four hours, 24 minutes.

42

MAY 2015

www.siparent.com

Three weeks after New York, Genao decided on a whim to run

the Philadelphia Marathon, and completed it in three hours, 47 minutes — just seven minutes shy of qualifying for her newest goal: to run in the Boston Marathon. “It (Philadelphia) was the greatest running experience of my life,” she said. Genao likes that her kids are enjoying the health benefits of running, such as getting exercise and gravitating toward healthy eating habits. There’s also the social aspect of being part of the running community — making friends with other runners’ children. “A family,” Genao calls it. They figure to see a lot of that family, either at the weekly Saturday fun runs at Clove Lakes Park or the many other events on tap as the road racing schedule ratchets up a notch starting this month. [See http://sirunning.com/sirace.html for a list of local races.] Through running, she said, her children also have learned the value of reaching a goal through hard work. Twice a week, as part of the 20-25 miles she puts in aside from a long run on Sundays, Genao and her kids do training runs together in the neighborhood. “You can’t cheat running,” Genao said. “You get out of it what you put into it. And the most important thing is being competitive with yourself. It’s always about you and bettering yourself.” Chre Genao and her kids are living proof. “This is something we can do as a family,” she said. “It’s bonding time. If my kids played baseball or another sport, I can’t do it with them. With running, I don’t have to take away from family time to enjoy my passion.” Joe LoVerde has been coaching youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s also a longtime newspaper editor and sportswriter.

SURVIVING SPRING

>>>

NATURAL WAYS TO BEAT SEASONAL ALLERGIES

he arrival of warmer weather changes the landscape completely. Animals come out of hiding and hibernation while trees and flowers bloom anew. The spring season can be an exciting time for naturalists and lovers of the great outdoors because they can immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of nature. But for many people, spring also marks the start of allergy season and spending time outdoors can become downright uncomfortable for them.

COVER STORY

FOR

Baby & You! abies. There’s so much build-up to their arrival: nine months of pregnancy, the baby shower, the nursery, the baby-moon, the overflow of excitement, the nerves, the excruciating labor. At the end of it all, there’s a baby – this tiny crying, cooing, peeing, pooping, milk-drinking, sleeping blob of cute. After that nine-month stretch of half bliss/half torture, a lot of parents are left scratching their heads, thinking “okay…now what?” That’s where Mommy & Me classes might come in.

B

You know what they say: babies don’t come with instruction manuals. At a Mommy & Me class, parents can learn ways to enhance their child’s development while deepening their bond and also having a great time. Offering a myriad of benefits for both mother and child, Mommy & Me can be a wonderful, unforgettable experience. When deciding whether you want to enroll in a class, there are few questions you should ask yourself first:

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TAKING A MOMMY & ME CLASS? Socialization – It’s not exactly easy to make new friends

when your social calendar is as empty as your wallet after a trip to Babies ‘R’ Us. Mommy & Me classes are a fantastic way to meet other moms and possibly form lasting friendships. Motherhood bonds women in ways that nothing else can. It is also a great place for baby to socialize and interact with other little ones.

Gets you out of the house – Sometimes mom just needs a good excuse to get out of the house (no, monthly trips to the pediatrician don’t count). There’s no quicker way to go stir crazy than

50

MAY 2015

bunkering down at home with a toddler or infant 24/7. Attending a class can help to break up the monotony of the day, while keeping everyone happily busy for an hour or two.

Combats postpartum depression – According to the American Psychological Association, up to 16 percent of new moms experience PPD. Getting out of the house, socializing, and feeling productive are good ways to combat the isolated feelings associated with PPD.You might even be able to locate a nearby Mommy & Me-style support or therapy group specifically created for women suffering from PPD.

Strengthens overall development – For babies, the benefits of a Mommy & Me class are virtually endless: it can increase baby’s motor skills and encourage physical development through play; it can enhance social awareness through interaction with other children; it stimulates the senses; it promotes cognitive development through engaging sights, sounds, and activities; and it can even boost self-confidence and foster an early sense of independence.

Promotes bonding – You and your little one are already inseparable, so how much more bonding do you need? Just because your daily routine consists of alternating between feeding, burping, changing, bathing, and rocking your baby doesn’t necessarily mean you are connecting during those moments. A Mommy & Me class can be a special time when the distractions of your everyday life are put aside and you are free to focus solely on your connection with your child.

Offers good ideas for home activities – Apart from watching baby sleep, many parents aren’t sure what else to do with this new person taking up residence in their life. Mommy & Me class can

offer some very helpful ideas when you want to do something productive with your child, but you just don’t know what.

WHAT KINDS OF MOMMY & ME CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE?

No two Mommy & Me classes are created alike. Since mommy’s interests can vary, so can the way she chooses to bond with baby. Some classes are good for newborns and infants, while other classes might be better suited for toddlers. For Staten Island moms, in particular, there are so many classes from which to choose. Arguably the most popular kind of Mommy & Me class is a gym class, where babies will climb, jump, and crawl to their hearts’ content (with a little help from mom, of course). Active moms might be interested in signing up for a Mommy & Me fitness class, which feature interactive exercises that will have both mother and child working out together. Stroller-fitness classes enable mom to easily work on her pre-baby body with her little one simply along for the ride. Zumba, dance, and swim classes are other good options for the physically active mom and baby duo.

Money is no object, either. While many Mommy & Me classes are affordable, some parents simply don’t have any room in their budget at all. If you want to take a class but don’t have the available funds to do so, try your local library. All Staten Island libraries offer free programs every week. Visit S.I. Parent’s Family Calendar to find a free class near you. If you still feel that Mommy & Me class isn’t for you, don’t fret. Do you sing songs to your baby at home? Do you dance and play and read books together? Do you go out for fresh air and talk to your child about what you see? All of these activities enhance your child’s overall development and further strengthen your bond. You’re a loving, caring parent, and your baby will thrive no matter what! Whether you decide to take an organized class together or not, enjoy your precious Mommy & Me time with your baby. It’s the makings of your future nostalgia. By Jeannine Cintron, a Staten Island mom of two who kind of misses the newborn blob phase.

Some Mommy & Me classes are less active but more likely to enhance baby’s cognitive development. Babies are naturally stimulated by musical sounds, so a music class can be lively and fun. Art classes are a good outlet for mother and child to explore their creativity together. In a baby sign language class, infants are taught how to express themselves even before speech has developed. Other classes are lower energy, with a focus on bonding through relaxation. Infant massage or baby yoga are perfect for this type of experience.

ARE MOMMY & ME CLASSES FOR EVERYONE?

A friend recently mentioned to a group of her fellow mommy friends that she’d never taken her children to a Mommy & Me class. Her statement was met with gasps of shock, as though she’d just blurted out that she feeds her family candy every night for dinner. “We can’t really afford any additional expenses,” she rushed to explain. Awkward silence followed. “Look, I’m a Stay-At-Home-Mom,” she continued. “If anything, I need a little less time with my kids, not more!” The group erupted into laughter and all was seemingly forgiven.

As wonderful as these classes can be for both mom and baby, it’s okay to admit that they might not be for you. Perhaps your circle of mommy friends is already substantial enough and you don’t feel the need to make new friends and set up more play dates. Perhaps you find yourself insecure or uncomfortable around new people and will be too distracted to really enjoy the time with your baby. Another friend admitted she would love to bring her baby to a class, but her demanding work schedule makes it difficult to do so. If the child is with a grandparent, nanny, or other family member throughout the week, most (if not all) classes will welcome the child and caretaker with open arms. It’s not uncommon to find grandmothers and even grandfathers at a Mommy & Me class. MAY 2015

GROWING UP ONLINE by Carolyn Jabs

Recognizing Fake News Learning to distinguish between reliable and bogus information is a crucial skill in the 21st century. For a brief time, it seemed search engines might help people to zero in on accurate, well-researched information. Instead, social media has made it easy to share “news” that has no basis in fact. The proliferation of fake news has accelerated because of websites that exploit the pay-per-click feature of online advertising. Nothing gets more clicks than an outrageous or too-good-to-be-true headline. When people share such stories without thinking, they ricochet around cyberspace, encouraging people to mourn celebrities who aren’t dead, worry about risks that aren’t real, and feel outrage over things that never happened. The problem has become so serious that Google is reportedly investigating ways to rank its results to factor in accuracy as well as popularity. Now that nearly a third of Americans get their news from Facebook according to the Pew Research Center, that company is also making efforts to stem the tide of fake news. To report something problematic, users can click the downward arrow in the upper right corner of the post. Select “Report problem.” Select “I don’t think this belongs on Facebook.” Choose the option that explains why the story shouldn’t be shared. Of course the success of this tactic depends upon people being able to recognize fake news when they see it. Parents can help their children become part of the solution rather than the problem by routinely talking about news and encouraging kids to ask the following questions, especially about stories that seem true because they’ve appeared so often in social media. Why was the story written? Even elementary age children can think about why someone is telling them something. Are they trying to be helpful? Are they self-serving? Are they joking? Are they lying? Help children understand that, in general, journalists and scientists are trying to help people understand things better. They may get things wrong sometimes but most do objective research and present their findings fairly. Is it a Joke? A number of websites make fun of the news in order to expose foolish policies and corrupt behavior. The Onion, for example, is famous for its satire, but not everyone gets the joke. A website called Literallyunbelievable shares posts from gullible people who have posted an Onion story as though it were true. Since satire can be a difficult concept for kids, teach your child to check websites for disclaimers. Lightly Braised Turnip, for example, says simply, “The LBT retains the right to invent facts for its own financial health.” When you can’t find a clear statement about what the website does, do a search that includes the name of the site and the word satire, hoax, or fake.

Who wrote and published the story? Some of the most notorious fake news sites include World News Daily Report, The Daily Currant, National Report, The Daily Currant, Empire News, and The News Examiner. Despite their newsy names, these sites regularly fabricate stories simply because they will earn more money if they can get people to click and share. In contrast, legitimate news organizations make a distinction between news, editorial opinion, and advertising. Professional journalists take pride in their work, so stories will have a byline and often it will be possible to contact the reporter. To help your child understand some of what journalists do to get to the bottom of a story, check out the informative videos at thenewsliteracyproject.org/learn-channel. Among other things, there’s a fascinating explanation of how editors confirm the reliability of a photograph. Has the story been confirmed by other news organizations? Stories that are true will quickly show up on websites for major news organizations. To find out whether a story has been picked up by other news outlets, check a news aggregator like Google news. (news.google.com). Kids can also make use of websites that specialize in uncovering hoaxes. Snopes.com debunks a wide variety of urban legends and false stories. Factcheck.org investigates the reliability of statements by politicians. The Washington Post does a weekly column about what was fake on the Internet. (Go to washingtonpost.com and search for what’s fake.) Hoax-Slayer.com and thatsnonsense.com also try to keep people informed about the latest viral foolishness.

What’s the source? As kids get older, they need to know how to evaluate sources so they can put their faith in people who deserve it. A media literacy program developed by professors at Stony Brook University uses the memorable acronym I’M VAIN to help students judge the reliability of news sources. I – Independent. A source that tries to be objective is better than a source that is trying to sell a product or an idea. M – Multiple. A story is more reliable when it’s confirmed by multiple sources rather than a single person. V – Verify. Sources who can back up a story with facts are preferable to sources that simply have opinions. A I – Authoritative and Informed. A story is more reliable if it comes from an expert who has the respect of peers. N – Named. Sources that are willing to go on the record are better than anonymous sources. Of course, adults know that information is never perfect. New facts are always coming to light, and people can have legitimate differences about how to interpret facts. Still, helping kids recognize blatantly fake news means that, at the very least, they won’t be misled or embarrassed by sharing something foolish. Better yet, they will become adults who are able to form opinions and make decisions, confident that they are based on the most reliable information they can find. SUMMER

>>>

TO POOL OR NOT TO POOL?

he weather will soon be warming up and many homeowners' thoughts are drifting toward days spent soaking up some sun by the pool. Early spring is a great time to install a pool so the family has a go-to hangout by the time summer arrives.

T

Installing a pool is a large financial investment, and homeowners considering adding a pool should not take that decision lightly. When attempting to determine if a pool is for them, homeowners may want to ask themselves the following questions. Is my yard suitable for a pool? Some yards may not be large enough for pools, while others may not meet the zoning requirements. Still other yards may have soil that's not suitable for putting in an inground pool, or may have a high water table that can delay construction.

BACKYARD SWIMMING POOLS MAKE FOR AN ENJOYABLE PLACE TO CONGREGATE WHEN THE WEATHER IS HOT.

Shade or Sun? When deciding the location of your pool, will you want full sun or some shade from nearby trees. Many people in this area would choose a sunny spot in their yard, for as much of the day as possible. Trees mean more work keeping the pool clean of leaves, bugs, and pollen and the filter unclogged, while the sun will help keep the temperature of the water warmer with less need for a heater. If you need some relief from the sun, a strategically-placed sun sail shade or large market umbrella could solve the problem. Can we afford it? Your budget will dictate which type of pool you can afford to install. With a wide price range - from a few hundred dollars for inflatable or self-installing models to many thousands for elaborate in-ground designs – there are options to fit most budgets. How will we use the pool? Decide if you're putting in a pool for the kids, to entertain the family, or to make an architectural statement in the yard. Having a clear sense of purpose will help to guide the decision-making process. Who will maintain the pool? Many homeowners tackle the day-today maintenance required to keep their pools clean and safe. Others hire pool cleaners to maintain their pools and ensure the water is properly balanced. Maintenance can cost additional money, so consider this potential cost when determining if a pool is for you. Are there any safety concerns? Parents of young children may be hesitant to install a pool, but today's pool installation codes consider

54

MAY 2015

many of the potential hazards of a pool and attempt to eliminate them. Fences surrounding in-ground pools with self-locking gates, as well as locking ladders for above-ground pools can eliminate accidental falls into unattended pools. The current requirements for swimming pools can be found on the New York State Department of State, Office of Planning & Development website (dos.ny.gov). If the decision has been made to move ahead with a pool, it can be helpful to understand a few facts about the process of installing a pool. Always work with a pool-installation company that has earned positive reviews and has a stellar record of service. While this does not guarantee that the job will not encounter problems, contractors with glowing reviews tend to have earned those reviews. Read reviews from unbiased, online customers as well as any friends or family members who have used a particular pool company. It's important that homeowners recognize that the installation of a pool may require some heavy machinery, which can damage lawns. Fence panels may have to be removed to let in excavation equipment. Sand, soil, backfill or gravel may be needed to level out a landscape, and things may get noisy and messy when the installation hits full swing. Some homeowners can handle installing above-ground pools on their own, but less DIY-savvy homeowners may want to leave the installation to a professional installer to ensure the job is done right. Always secure the proper permits and inspections prior to using the pool. This not only ensures the safety of swimmers, but also guarantees the pool is legal. Follow a few guidelines and ask the necessary questions to make a pool installation go more smoothly.

10 TIPS ON HOW PARENTS CAN SAVE FOR THEIR CHILDREN’S COLLEGE EDUCATION

arning a college degree has traditionally been part of the American Dream, and for many years that dream was affordable. But that’s not the case anymore.

E

In 2014, the average college student graduated with over $30,000.00 in debt, and overall in the US, college debt is now over $1 trillion. This leaves parents wondering how their children are going to pay for college, or how they as parents can help them. Some parents are still paying for their own student loans, on top of their mortgages, living expenses, and retirement so saving for their children’s education can be a daunting task. Here are 10 tips to help take away those worries. FREE YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILD OF THE FINANCIAL 1. Start Early. Plans are solely for qualified education expenses, a Roth IRA is more flexible and can be used in other ways if your child doesn’t need or use the earnings. 7. Apply for College Savings Rewards Programs. These programs offer free money. Similar to cash back bonuses, some credit card companies give you the ability to save money toward your child’s college education through purchases. Upromise is one of the leaders in the industry, allowing shoppers at participations retailers to earn cash toward college savings. 8. Consider Community College. Community Colleges are a great way to make college more affordable. They are usually cheaper than four-year universities, and can give your child the ability to excel in a less crowded environment while they earn an Associate degree and gain college and life experience. By attending a community college, your child can also evaluate his or her major to make sure that is the right field of study for them. Switching majors at a four year college can add time and credits and at many schools that can be quite costly. 9. College is Not for Everyone. While I believe that higher education is important, I also believe that college is not for everyone. Forcing your child to attend college when he or she doesn’t have that desire can be a waste of money; they won’t take their education seriously and might drop out before finishing. Trade schools or apprentices are great alternatives; they provide real world training and job opportunities, and our society is greatly in need of skilled workers. 10. Invest in Yourself First. Before investing in your child’s education, make sure to invest in yourself. Maximize the contribution to your own retirement funds first. Your child’s education can wait until they can finance it themselves, but your retirement can’t. By Marco LeRoc, author of Screw College Debt. He is a former international student who graduated from a private university debt free despite paying lofty out-of-state tuition fees and not qualifying for any governmental or private financial loan assistance. Marco, who majored in economics, was heavily in debt after his first year in school. This prompted him to create a tactical budgeting and savings plan, which allowed him to pay off his freshman year debt and ultimately his entire tuition before graduation.

DEAR TEACHER by Peggy Gisler & Marge Eberts

Summer Homework Question: The school year is rapidly coming to a close. But school is not over for my four children. All have brought home folders of summer homework that need to be completed before the first day of school in the fall. They will even be graded on it in elementary school. In high school, they will be tested on what they have read and given a grade that will be part of their first semester English grade. The summer homework is such a big deal that my child entering kindergarten even has a lot of material to cover. Are other schools doing the same thing? I certainly don't look forward to having to browbeat my children to do this work all summer long. Last year, I was really lax about having the kids do their homework. As a result, the last two weeks before school started was just doing homework, homework, homework! -- Too Much Work

Kinder Combos • Ballet • Tap • Modern • Jazz • Hip Hop

Answer: Your children's school is not out of step, as more and more schools are assigning summer work. The reasoning behind this is that it keeps students' school skills sharp -- especially for those who have the traditional long summer break of up to 70 days. Students who do not do some work in the summer will on average suffer a learning loss equivalent to about 1 month. Typically, students score lower at the end of summer than at the end of the school year on the same standardized tests. Students who are reluctant to do any summer work should be reminded that failure to do this work will put them behind their classmates at the start of the next school year. Admittedly, summer is a time to relax and largely forget about school. Parents can keep it that way if they and their children organize how the summer homework will be handled. Before your children start any of the assignments, give them a say in when they will do them. You could suggest that they take a short break from these assignments after school is over and before it begins again. Another suggestion is that they only work on the assignments three or four days a week until all the homework is completed.

Parents: Much of what we think that we know about stuttering is actually a myth. Many very successful people, like Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe and a recent top 10 performer on "American Idol," have had severe stuttering problems. Here with help from The Stuttering Foundation is a list of facts to counter the myths about stuttering. You can learn more about stuttering by visiting the organization's website at www.stutteringhelp.org or by calling 800-992-9392. Myth: People who stutter are not smart. Reality: There is no link whatsoever between stuttering and intelligence. Myth: Nervousness causes stuttering. Reality: Nervousness does not cause stuttering. Or should we assume that people who stutter are prone to be nervous, fearful, anxious, or shy? They have the same full range of personality traits as those who do not stutter. Myth: Stuttering can be "caught" through imitation or by hearing another person stutter. Reality: You can't "catch" stuttering. No one knows the exact causes of

stuttering, but recent research indicates that family history (genetics), neuromuscular development, and the child's environment, including family dynamics, all play a role in the onset of stuttering. Myth: It helps to tell a person to "take a deep breath before talking" or "think about what you want to say first." Reality: This advice only makes a person more self-conscious, making the stuttering worse. More helpful responses include listening patiently and modeling slow and clear speech yourself.

Ways to Teach Children How to Write their Names

(New patients only)

Question: My daughter, who is entering first grade, still can’t write her name. How can I teach her how to do this before next year? - Parent Teacher Answer: You should be able to help your child accomplish this goal before school starts. Incidentally, she should be able to write all of the letters of the alphabet, too. You can work with your daughter using the steps below to help her learn to write her name. She needs to master each step before going to the next one. --Get a copy of the alphabet letters the school is using. They should show the direction that each letter is formed. --Teach her how to print the letters in her name, starting with her first name. The letters can be taught in any order. She also needs to know the names of the letters. --Teach her the capital letter for only the first letter in her name. --Print her name. Have her trace these letters many times. She may find it easier to write using a marking pen. --Write her name using only dots. Then she should connect the dots. --Print her name, and have her copy it under the letters you have written. She should say each letter as she writes it. --Have your child write her name without looking at the model. --Teach your child her last name in the same way.

Did you know that a mother will change over 7,300 diapers by the time her child is two years old? That adds up to over three 40-hour work weeks spent elbows-deep in baby pee and poop. No wonder she gets so stressed out! Caring for an infant is no simple task; it’s a 24/7 job. Baby comes first, right? But where does caring for mom come in? Usually dead last. Most moms don’t take care of themselves half as well as they care for their family. You know that old saying: “If Mommy isn’t happy, nobody is happy.” So this Mother’s Day, make a pledge to yourself, and to those who love you, to start taking care of YOU. Start by scheduling those doctor’s appointments you’ve been putting off. Get your teeth cleaned at the dentist, visit the dermatologist to check your skin, and go for an annual checkup with your primary care

physician. Your health should always come first—you can’t care for your children if you aren’t around. Hit the spa, or at least get a haircut more than once before your child starts preschool. Once a month, order a pizza for an early dinner and then head over the nail salon for a mani/pedi. While you’re out, stop at the mall and buy yourself a new outfit (or five new pairs of yoga pants). Whatever you do, stay away from any store that sells onesies! Let those dishes in the sink wait and (gasp!) go take a nap while your child is asleep once in a while. Ask your spouse to fold a few loads of laundry while you cozy up with good book in a quiet room. Household chores might be causing you more stress than you realize. If it’s in your budget, don’t feel bad about hiring a professional cleaning service once a month to do some deep cleaning in your house.

GET YOUR GARDEN OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT ow that we are looking at winter in the rear view mirror, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well.

N

This is the perfect time to start your gardening projects to ensure your garden gets off on the right foot: Clear Debris. One of the best things you can do for your garden in the early spring is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won't take long, but it's a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again. Examine the Soil. Soil plays a significant role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners

address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. Initiate Edging. Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flowerbeds. Such tools will cut deep enough so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flowerbed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a time-consuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing. Fight Weeds. Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won't return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a preemergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. There are some organic options available as well. One such option, corn gluten meal (CGM), a protein-based, natural product used as a pre-emergent herbicide is not effective on established weeds so should only be used as a preventative. The nitrogen in CGM can, in fact, benefit established weeds, resulting in an increased weed problem. Other environmentally friendly weed-control treatments, such as mulch or soil solarization (a nonchemical method for controlling soilborne pests and weeds by laying a clear tarp on the soil to capture radiant energy from the sun) are cheaper and often more effective than CGM. Taking a few steps to prepare your garden in early spring will ensure that your garden thrive once planting season begins.

HOW TO BE A GOOD YOUTH SPORTS PARENT

xtracurricular and summer season sports leagues keep thousands of children occupied. Youth sports promote physical fitness and teamwork while helping children acquaint themselves with sportsmanship and camaraderie.

E

The Journal of Sports Medicine says three out of four American families with school-aged children have at least one child playing an organized sport. While many kids play just for recreation, others play competitively.

PARENTS CAN TAKE SEVERAL STEPS TO MAKE THEIR KIDS' EXPERIENCES WITH SPORTS AS POSITIVE AS POSSIBLE. Sports are meant to be sources of enjoyment for children, but parental pressure and poor adult behavior on the sidelines can make kids reluctant to compete. Parents who behave poorly may inadvertently pass on bad habits to their children or cause kids to prematurely abandon their athletic pursuits. The following are a few tips for parents who want to encourage their kids' passions for sports in positive ways.

· Show respect for coaches and officials. Parents should not act like they are the final authority on calls or how team members should play. Respect should always be shown to coaches and referees. · Let your child have fun regardless of his or her performance. Too often parents get swept up in how their children are performing when the goal for young athletes should be to enjoy themselves. Resist the urge to focus on performance and focus instead of whether or not your child is having fun. · Recognize college scholarships may not be in the cards. Although some children are destined for athletic greatness, many will not play sports after high school. Pressuring older children to improve their performance in the hopes of landing college scholarships can make the little time they do have to play their favorite sports less enjoyable. · Take cues from the child. Children are often great indicators of parental behavior at sporting events. Parents whose children seem unenthusiastic about mom and dad attending their sporting events may be trying to tell you they don't appreciate your behavior at the games. · Provide constructive criticism. Early coaching and practice with parents can give kids a leg up on the competition. But keep your advice constructive. Parents who become pushy or force constant practices can make sports unenjoyable. · Place emphasis on fun and learning skills. Find out what the kids hope to accomplish by playing sports and help them to achieve those goals. Focus on being supportive rather than emphasizing winning, as doing so can help children view sports participation in a more positive light. If children seem to have lost interest in sports, parents can ask why in an effort to make sports fun again or encourage other pursuits. Many sports now require yearround participation, which can cause burnout in some youngsters. Sometimes a brief break and some fine-tuning may be all that's needed to rekindle a child's passion for sports.

Mom’s Turn (Officially) Past Mother’s Day columns have focused on my mom and my grandmother, which is why I thought it would just be nice to let Mom have "complete control” over this month’s column. That, I joked with her, is my Mother’s Day gift to her this year. You see, she and I have been co-writing “Gigi’s World” since I was 4 months old, and – I’ll be honest – much of the responsibility here has fallen on her shoulders. Then again, she’s the Mom, that’s how it is. So, for this Mother’s Day, I’ll make it official. This one is all her! When I started writing “Baby Gia’s World” – what this column was originally entitled – when Giavanna was 4 months old, I had no idea we’d still be doing this almost 12 years later.

Does Your Child Have A Disability or Special Health Care Needs? You are not alone! “We care, we’ve been there.”

STATEN ISLAND SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT CENTER

Parent to Parent is a support network and is the Staten Island Parent Resource Center for children with Special Education Needs, Developmental Disabilities, Behavioral Challenges and Special Health Care Needs. Founded & directed by parents of children with special needs.

Initially, writing the column was a fun way to review some baby and toddler products; those of you who’ve been reading from the beginning may recall that we did a lot of toy-oriented pieces back then. It was a neat way for us to test out new items and report back to fellow moms about whether or not they were worth it. And then there were opportunities to discuss the current milestone Gigi was experiencing – potty training, teething, trying out new foods, the arrival of her little sister, the love of our beloved pets, family adventures, flourishing friendships, Girl Scout excursions, dance recitals, vacations … the list goes on and on. This column has blessed me with a way to document and cherish many of those “Mommy Moments” I may have otherwise forgotten. Now, as we get closer to Gigi’s 12th birthday in August, we've been talking more about her privacy concerning her thoughts and the issues in her life. You know, "girlfriend talk" – things you don't necessarily want to share with everyone. (And we know everyone reads SI Parent!) I’m suspecting that the next few milestones we’ll be approaching as she gets older will be ones in which “Gigi’s World” becomes – truly – more of just her world. I’m looking forward to seeing what she chooses to share as we get closer to her 12th birthday, the milestone at which we’ve decided to mark her exit from these monthly chronicles. Having had the ability to share with all of you snippets about my beautiful, unique daughter – from her first steps, first words, and everything since and in between – has been the ultimate Mother’s Day gift of all.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.

Individualized and Customized: Language Enhancement Programs, Auditory Training Programs, Fluency Enhancement Programs, Oral-Sensory-Motor Plans, Voice Treatment Programs, Accent Reduction Programs, Feeding Treatment Plans, Pediatric & Adult Clients We welcome NYC DOE clients, and we are now an associate of The Perfect Playground for all CSE cases.
