choosing the right chores for your kids ARE YOUR KIDS HELPING OUT? Start young

Most parents want their kids to participate in the household by doing chores. And rightly so. But how do you go about deciding which chores to assign your kids – and what role should you play in helping them complete their chores? Experts agree on the following points:

6 Chores.indd 2

june 2018

www.siparent.com

The first and most important thing is to start young. Generally speaking, says Dr. Roger McIntire, a child psychologist, parents wait too long to assign chores because they think their kids should be ready first. “But that puts the cart before the horse,” says Dr. McIntire. “They will learn by doing. Cynthia Ewer, the author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Organized” and other well-known books on home management, agrees: “A one-year-old will giggle if handed a clean diaper to dust the legs of the furniture.” Make sure the chores are age-appropriate

While even toddlers can get excited about helping out, make sure that the chores you assign are age-appropriate. “Instead of assigning a simple task,” says Dr. Patricia Nan Anderson, a professor of early childhood education, “appeal to your child’s desire to do important things by giving difficult tasks.”

Simple tasks are often seen as boring, and your kids may quickly lose interest and do a poor job. One way to overcome this problem is to add complexity to simple chores as your kids get older and more experienced. For example, if they have learned to put the dishes in the sink, ask them to rinse them off and put them away. Kids are often capable of much more than their parents realize – and that kids let on. As Elizabeth Pantley, the author of many best-selling books on parenting, notes only partly tongue-in-cheek: “Keep in mind that a child who has mastered a complicated computer game can easily run the dishwasher.” Make sure the chores are manageable

It’s also important that the chores you assign are manageable. Karen Stephens, founder of the “Parenting Exchange,” which publishes parenting books, says that you should teach your kids how to “break tasks

down into manageable ‘can do’ parts.” Indeed, says Mrs. Stephens, it’s useful to “provide a checklist for steps to accomplish. This avoids children ‘forgetting’ steps or feigning confusion.” Mrs. Pantley agrees: “‘Clean your room”’ is vague and can be interpreted in any number of ways. Instead be explicit by saying, ‘Put your clothes in the closet, books on the shelf, dishes in the kitchen, and toys in the toy box.’ You should also teach your kids how to prioritize, especially if you assign them multiple chores. As Mrs. Stephens puts it, kids need to learn how to “set and prioritize goals and determine what needs to be done to achieve them.” Finally, your kids will see the chores you assign as more manageable if they can be accomplished in a relatively short period of time: “Kids are more willing to repeat a short burst of tidying than a long marathon of cleaning,” says Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore, a child psychologist. So, what role should you play in helping your kids complete their chores? Do chores together - or at the same time

It’s important to either set aside periods of time where you do chores together as a family or, at the very least, do chores at the same time. “That way,” says James Lehman, the creator of many well-known parenting programs, “no one feels as if they’re missing out or being punished by having to complete their tasks. It’s just chore time.” Mrs. Ewer agrees that you should try to have all family members do chores at the same time. “From a kid’s point of view,” says Mrs. Ewer, “it’s downright lonely to be sentenced to clean a bathroom each afternoon after school.” That becomes so much easier to stomach if the kid knows “that all the other family members are hard at work, too. Cleaning misery loves company, you might say.” Make sure your kids follow through – and don’t skirt your own responsibilities

It’s also important to make sure that your kids always complete their chores. “If your kids aren’t expected to regularly follow through,” says Mrs. Pantley, “they might start putting off chores in the hope that someone else will do them for them.” As a parent, you should complete whatever chores you have assigned yourself. As Dr. Brunner, a child psychologist, puts it: “Children learn the most from what they see you do, not what you tell them to do.” Have fun together

Finally, try to make this a fun and enjoyable experience. Experts agree that you get the best results if you make doing chores a family event filled with love, laughter, and music. As Dr. Kennedy-Moore puts it, “if your attitude while doing the chores is light-hearted, your child will be more willing to participate.” By Tanni Haas, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Speech Communication Arts & Sciences, The City University of New York - Brooklyn College.

Did you know that New York City has more than 1,700 parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities? Staten Island alone has over 170 parks with more than 12,300 acres of protected parkland more than one third of the Island’s total land mass! With so much ground to cover, where does one even start when exploring “The Greenest Borough” in New York?

A good place to start is by visiting NYC Parks & Recreation’s Historical Signs Project whose mission is two-fold: teach New Yorkers about the city’s rich park history and by doing so, develop communities that seek to nurture these important public spaces. In fact, the park on Manor Road was recently rededicated to honor one of Parks’ greatest community advocates. The park, formerly known as Toad Hall Playground, is located at the foot Todt Hill. Standing at 401 feet, Todt Hill’s peak is the highest natural point in the entire five boroughs of New York City! There is quite a bit of speculation surrounding how Todt Hill received its name, which isn’t really clear over the course of history. Although the name, “Toad Hill”, appears on a property map dated February 4, 1857, the hill has been more commonly known as Todt Hill. “Todt” is a variant of the Dutch word for “death”, which would refer to the Dutch and Native American burial grounds that are believed to have existed there in the past. Some suggest that the name Todt Hill is simply a variation of “the Old Hill”.

The last possible origin of its name could have come from a local tale about a lady who lived on Todt Hill some time before the American Revolution, who supposedly sent a rejected lover from her house with toads planted in his pockets. When the man discovered the amphibians, he vowed he would never return to “Toad Hill”. In 2017, the park at the foot of Todt Hill was renamed after the late Christopher J. Igneri - a once strong advocate for NYC Parks. Mr. Igneri passed away nearly four years ago and was a former Parks & Rec. Director for most of his 35 years working for the department. He was also a certified referee who coached basketball for various local organizations including Tottenville High School. In honor of his community service, NYC Parks has rededicated the park on Schmidts Lane between Manor Road and La Guardia Avenue. The Christopher J. Igneri Playground offers areas for guests to hang out and play, including handball courts, swings, basketball courts, and a water play area.

• Create a first-year memory book.

There’s Only One First Father’s Day- Make It Memorable!

make his first father’s day special Dads are often the first heroes in their young children’s lives. Dads chase away ghosts in the closet, let their daughters dance on their toes, and teach their sons how to win the heart of their first crush.

14 Father's Day.indd 2

june 2018

The first Father’s Day a new dad spends with his growing family can be quite memorable, as celebrating one’s fatherhood for the first time is a unique and special time. Spouses and other family members can go the extra mile to make this year that much more special for first-time fathers. • Let Dad sleep in. Chances are Dad is enamored with his little bundle of joy, but it’s well-known that being a new father often means sacrificing sleep time - especially for the first several months to a year of that child’s life. Enlist the help of a family member who can be on baby watch while Dad gets to sleep in on the weekend of his big day. With some extra sleep, Dad can enjoy Father’s Day that much more.

Take the time to put together a scrapbook of the photos and moments baby and Dad have gotten to spend together. So much focus is often placed on a new baby and his or her mother that Dad may be left playing second fiddle. Make it clear that fathers are key to their children’s development and happiness, too. • Make a baby keepsake. Use washable ink so that baby can sign a Father’s Day card with a hand or footprint. The tradition can be repeated year after year until the child is old enough to write. • Go overboard on gifts. The idea isn’t to buy Dad’s love, but Dad’s first Father’s Day is a truly unique time. On behalf of his firstborn, purchase a few different gifts - those items that he has been interested in buying but has resisted in favor of saving money for new onesies and burp cloths. Or invest in one special event gift, such as tickets to a game to see his favorite team or a concert to catch a favorite band. • Boost his ego. Get matching T-shirts for baby and Dad with cute memes and sayings, such as “Couch Potato” and “Tater Tot.”

Father’s Day comes once a year. However, a father’s very first Father’s Day occurs just once. Use the opportunity to pamper Dad so he can savor this truly special experience.

Readers are Winners! Reading is FUNdamental! Just ask the extremely bright fourth graders who represented their schools at the Borough President’s 22nd annual “Readers Are Leaders” Exceptional Readers Awards Ceremony. Fourth grade classes in Staten Island’s public, parochial, and private schools were challenged to read six books at grade level or above during a five-week period and submit a report on their favorite book that they read during the period. The Island’s fourth graders have read more than 660,000 books for the annual challenge since it began back in 1996. One Exceptional Reader from each school that participated in the program was then chosen to attend the ceremony. Head to siparent.com for a complete list of the exceptional reader

“‘Readers Are Leaders’ has helped foster Staten Island children’s love of reading for more than 20 years, and I’m thrilled to continue the ‘Readers Are Leaders’ tradition,” said BP Oddo. “You read for fun, you read to learn, you read to escape, you read to get better at certain things, and if you want to be a leader, you do well by reading and reading as much as you can. I want to congratulate all of this year’s participants and hope they continue reading and learning.”

The Great American Campout Everyone should spend a night under the stars at least once. The National Wildlife Federation is again hosting its Great American Campout, an annual event encouraging people to connect with the great outdoors, get closer to nature, and get motivated to protect wildlife and wild places. People are asked to make an online pledge to camp anywhere they’d like – including their own backyard— on the Great American Campout Day, June 23. National Wildlife Federation’s Great American Campout is also part of Great Outdoors Month in June, a month designated to highlight the many kinds of outdoor activities that strengthen our bonds with nature.

A Shark-tastic Summer Shark Week isn’t the only thing shark enthusiasts can look forward to next month. A new exhibit at the famous New York Aquarium in Coney Island will be opening on June 30 featuring 18 different species of the world’s scariest sea creatures. The “Ocean Wonders: Sharks!” exhibit measures a vast 57,500 square feet and stands at three stories high, offering an educational message to onlookers about protecting the ocean’s biggest predators. Between this and the upcoming August release of “The Meg,” a potential blockbuster about the return of the prehistoric Megaladon, this is going to be one heck of a shark-tastic summer!

Fourth of July Travis Parade With the start of summer comes its biggest holiday -- Independence Day! On Staten Island, the place to be for the patriotic day is in Travis, where one of the oldest, continuously-held Independence Day parades in the country is proudly held each year.

Big Apple Winners Congratulations to the recipients of the 2018 Big Apple Awards! Seventeen educators from all five boroughs were honored for their outstanding work, including Alberto Toro, Middle School Instrumental Music Teacher at I.S. 7 Elias Bernstein in Staten Island. The Big Apple Awards are a citywide recognition program open to all full-time teachers in New York City public schools. The winners were selected from a pool of over 6,500 nominations.

Summer Reading Challenge The Scholastic Summer Challenge is back again, motivating young readers to pick up a book all summer long. To participate in the challenge, kids simply log their reading minutes on the Scholastic website each day to earn virtual rewards. The challenge is already underway, with millions of minutes logged so far. Kids have until September 7 to log their minutes. This year’s theme is “The Magical Summer of Reading” inspiring reading adventures over the break. The school that logs the most minutes will receive “Best in State” recognition.

Go to siparent.com/summer-reading-programs for the scoop on local summer reading parties and other summer reading challenges!

Global Running Day

This year’s Grand Marshal will be President of the Travis Civic Association and Vietnam Veteran Gene Guerra. “I can’t begin to tell you how proud it makes me to be selected as the Grand Marshal of the 108th Travis 4th of July parade,” said Mr. Guerra to parade organizers. “When I look at the names of the grand marshals that preceded me, it sends chills up my spine. It is a great honor that I will cherish forever. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. God Bless Travis and God Bless America. LET’S HAVE A PARADE!” The rain-or-shine ceremony kicks off at noon at the reviewing stand at P.S. 26 at 4108 Victory Blvd, followed by the parade step-off from Showplace Entertainment Center at 141 East Service Road at 12:30pm. Did you know that June is Anti-Gun Violence Month? Unfortunately, there’s never been a more crucial time to spread awareness. Sundog Theatre is once again encouraging students to “use art as a catalyst for change.” They are hosting “Soundtrack of Life,” a program encouraging students to express their feelings about gun violence through music and spoken word. Students from Curtis and McKee High Schools have worked hard putting their creative thoughts into song and spoken word and professionally recording their work. Sundog Theatre is showcasing the talented students’ work in a three-hour, borough-wide event at St. George Theatre on Sunday, June 9 from 1pm to 4pm. The free event will feature a live DJ, refreshments, giveaways, performances, community service organizations, speakers, free activities for kids, and more. You can RSVP at sundogtheatre.

Alex’s Lemonade Days Lemonade stands are a summertime must for little entrepreneurs, and those with a generous spirit have even more reason to do so in June. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is once again hosting its annual fundraiser, Alex’s Lemonade Days, where supporters host stands to raise funds for childhood cancer research. The fundraiser was founded by Alex Scott, a selfless girl who lost her own life to cancer at just eight years old. Lemonade Days is held each year in June, the time of year when Alex always held her lemonade stand, to honor her and all childhood cancer heroes. $150 million has been raised toward pediatric cancer research since Alex’s first front yard lemonade stand. Previously a three-day event, this year’s Lemonade Days has been extended to a full week, Saturday, June 2 to Sunday, June 10. Do you or your child wish to join the fight against childhood cancer? Hosting a lemonade stand of your own is the perfect opportunity to continue Alex’s legacy and embrace ALSF’s mission. Each Lemonade Days stand host receives a fundraising kit, which includes materials such as posters, banners, thank you notes, fundraising tips, ALSF merchandise and more.

Fairs, Festivals, Food & Fun! There are so many fairs, festivals, tastings and strolls on the Island this month, your kids won’t have time for screens at all and you won’t know which one to hit first. From food truck festivals to STEM-themed carnivals to BIG PICNICS and so much more, you won’t even think of leaving Staten Island this June. Go to page 38 for a list of family friendly events every single weekend, all month long!

22 things your kids will destroy Mud, drinks, food, candy, paint, glue, nail polish – you name it, it’s going to end up on your floor

Whether your kids qualify as Dennis the Menace clones or not, your house may be in shambles for years to come. But there are ways to minimize the damage. Following are some common household items you might expect to be demolished by your little, or not so little, mischief-maker and recommendations for a home that can withstand the childhood years.

Screens – Door and window screens get pushed on, poked at, popped out, stretched, and torn by kids. Install window guards, which come in a variety of styles and serve a dual purpose. They’ll protect your screens and prevent your child from falling out windows. Sliding and bi-fold closet doors – Some bi-fold and sliding doors just don’t hold up to excessive use by children, especially when kids attempt to close the doors over heaps of stuff. Prevent unnecessary opening and closing (as well as getting fingers pinched in the hinge!) by installing a bi-fold door lock that hooks to the top. For doors used regularly by children, make sure they’re installed properly to keep the doors from coming off track. If they are still a problem, replace them with heavier doors and better-designed tracks. Walls – These dirt magnets quickly take on a life of their own. For easy-to-maintain walls,

avoid heavy texture, which is difficult to clean. Cover walls with either vinyl-coated wallpaper or semi-gloss paint. Eggshell or satin paints have enough sheen to wash up reasonably well, but avoid flat paint altogether. Doors and trim – These often-ignored surfaces are grime collectors. Use high gloss paint, which can be washed repeatedly on doors and trim. High-gloss paint will also lessen damage to doors caused by tape and stickers by allowing for easy removal of sticky residue. Carpet – Mud, drinks, food, candy, paint, glue, nail polish– you name it– it’s going to end up on your floor. When selecting carpet, look for Olefin, the most stain-resistant carpet fiber, in a dense, low tuft pile or loop. Olefin can even be cleaned with bleach. Nylon is also resistant to stain and less likely to matte. Be sure to install a high quality, thin, dense pad underneath to reduce wear and extend your carpet’s life.

feature / parenting tips Toilets – To avoid frequent plumbing from excessive toilet paper, purchase single ply tissue to reduce the amount your child uses. If you’re replacing your toilet, install one made for residential use but with a larger, commercial size drain. Lazy Susan cabinet – Your Lazy Susan shelves make the perfect step stool. But your child’s weight can cause imbalance and affect the Lazy Susan’s rotation. Protect your child and your cabinet by installing a Lazy Susan cabinet lock. Mattress – Nighttime accidents can occur into the early elementary years. Even if your child doesn’t have an accident, his overnight guests might. Protect mattresses with a fitted waterproof mattress cover or pad placed underneath the comfier mattress pad. Upholstered furniture – Sofas and chairs will likely be eaten on, soak up spilled drinks, be used as footrests for dirty shoes. They even sometimes make a creative canvas for art work. Choose stain resistant synthetic fabrics. Nylon, then polyester, are the most resistant. Polypropylene is also a good choice and the only stain proof fabric. Consider stain proofing your upholstery or protecting it with slipcovers as well. Wood furniture – Protect tables, chairs, desks, and other wood furniture from scratches, gauges, chips, crayons, and drinks by purchasing solid wood coated with a scuff and stain resistant polyurethane finish. If solid wood isn’t in your budget, avoid inexpensive veneered furniture, which will bubble and chip with minimal use. Just look for something in between. Blinds – All it takes to ruin a set of blinds is to pull the strings the wrong way causing them to tangle inside the frame. So purchase Blind Cord Windups to keep cords out of children’s reach. When kids are old enough to adjust blinds on their own, tie the pull strings together in a knot a few inches above the pulls to prevent blinds from malfunctioning. Of course, cordless blinds are the safest choice. Computer, DVD & CD Players – Any electronic equipment with slots make popular hiding places for small items, such as crayons, coins, or toy figures. Keep your computer and electronics in a locked cabinet. If the keyboard and mouse are within reach, turn it off when not in use. If your child uses a computer, give her one of her own. A used one can often be purchased complete with monitor and keyboard inexpensively.

Vacuum – Your vacuum is likely to eat many foreign objects such as pennies, marbles, and game pieces. Look for a vacuum specially designed to deflect or handle foreign objects without belt breakage or motor damage. Television – TV buttons draw young children like magnets. Broken and lodged buttons can occur even with newer models. Mount your television on the wall out of young children’s reach with a TV mount.

Battery operated devices –Battery compartments are simply irresistible to curious kids, resulting in missing batteries and lost or broken covers, or even worse– accidental ingestion! For battery-operated items, look for those fastened by a screw or that require prying to open. Silverware – Spoons make excellent shovels! Keep good silverware out of reach, and protect your everyday silverware from going missing by having plenty of small shovels available for your kids and their friends, whether you have a sandbox or not. The garbage disposal also poses problems with kids. Buy a sink strainer to keep silverware from falling in the disposal and being gnawed up. Dishes – Save the elegant table for guests and special occasions. Give young children their own set of plastic dishes to eliminate breakage. As your kids grow, invest in a set of Corelle dinnerware, which comes in a wide variety of designs and is nearly unbreakable. Photo albums – Kids love looking at family photo albums, but it won’t take long for them to be in shambles. Choose photo albums with heavy-duty sleeves, then seal sleeve openings with an acid-free clear tape. Books – Scribbles, tatters, and tears will likely fill your books if they aren’t kept out of reach. Protect jacket covers by removing and storing them, and cover your books with store bought or homemade covers. CDs, DVDs & Video Game – Putting disks away is quicker and easier if they don’t have to be matched up with their jewel cases. Get a binder case that holds multiple CDs so they will be less likely to get trampled and broken. Car upholstery – Family travel is tough on auto interiors. Protect your vehicle with seat covers and floor mats throughout, making it easier to clean and retain your vehicle’s resale value. Sprinklers – Kids love running through the sprinkler. They also like standing on it, adjusting it, and squirting with it. So a single day of water play can do the sprinkler in. Have a non-mechanical sprinkler available for your kid’s use. 1. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, dried basil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. 2. In a large bowl, toss together shredded lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, bacon and chicken. 3. Add mayonnaise mixture to the large bowl and toss to coat evenly. You may not need all the dressing-add it to your liking. 4. Top tortillas with a large spoonful of the filling. turkey pinwheels Ingredients

• 3 tablespoons whipped cream cheese • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise • 1 teaspoon dill • 1/2 clove garlic minced • 1 rectangle wrap • 1 big handful fresh arugula • 1 medium tomato sliced very thin • 4 ounces (about 5 large slices turkey breast) • 1 shallot sliced thin

Directions:

1. To make the spread, mix together the cream cheese, mayonnaise, dill, and garlic. Spread onto wrap covering entire surface. 2. Cover with arugula, then tomato, then turkey, then shallot, reserving about a one inch section on one side where no toppings will sit. That will be the last part of the wrap and the cream cheese will help seal it together. 3. Starting from the opposite side, roll up your wrap, using your hands to ensure the toppings don’t squeeze out as you role. 4. Using a sharp knife, cut into 6-8 pinwheels. From selfproclaimedfoodie.com

cheeseburger wrap Ingredients

• 1 pound lean ground beef • 5 slices cooked bacon, chopped • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce • 3 tablespoons ketchup • 1 teaspoon dried minced onion • pepper and salt, to taste • 5 large flour tortillas • shredded cheddar cheese • mustard • tomato slices • lettuce

Directions:

1. Brown ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain any grease. Add cooked chopped bacon, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, minced onion and salt and pepper to beef. Stir to combine. 2. Reduce heat to low and let mixture heat thoroughly, about 5 minutes or so. 3. Sprinkle some cheddar cheese down the center of each tortilla. Add a few heaping Tablespoons of the beef mixture on top of cheese. Drizzle a little mustard (and more ketchup, if desired) on top of the beef, and then add a couple tomato slices. Roll up each tortilla burrito-style. 4. Place wraps, a couple at a time, onto a preheated indoor grill and grill for 3-5 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Carefully remove wraps from grill and place on a plate. Gently unravel wrap to add some lettuce. 5. Re-roll wrap and then cut in center diagonally. Serve immediately and enjoy! How to

Banish Mosquitoes From Your Yard Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. Mosquitoes are even to blame for heartworm in dogs. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva. Homeowners can employ several measures to prevent mosquitoes from invading their backyards this spring and summer.

64 Mosquito.indd 2

• Remove standing water. Stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, so homeowners must be diligent in their efforts to remove june 2018

standing water around their properties. Mosquitoes can breed in bird baths, pets’ water bowls and empty plant pots that collect rain water; they can lay hundreds of eggs even in a spoonful of water! • Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer. • Keep a well-manicured lawn. Well-manicured lawns are less likely to be breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Because water plays such a crucial role in the mosquito breeding process, it’s necessary that all potential water sources in a yard be removed. Fallen leaves that are not removed and pockets of soil beneath trees and plants can collect rain water or water from lawn sprinklers, which can be just enough for mosquitoes to breed. • Grow mosquito-repelling plants outdoors. Keep yourself, your family and pets safe naturally by planting specific plants and flowers that repel mosquitoes, as well as some other pests. Recommended plants include lavender, marigolds, catnip (also called catmint), rosemary, citronella grass (the Cybopogon nardus or Citronella winterianus variety), basil, and scented geraniums. • Use fans. Consumer Reports tested the efficacy of oscillating pedestal fans to keep mosquitoes from invading decks and patios and found that such fans cut mosquito landings by 45 to 65 percent for those sitting closest to the fans. When hosting backyard barbecues, homeowners can set up several such fans on their decks and patios to keep mosquitoes at bay. Mosquitoes are unwelcome guests come spring and summer. But homeowners can take steps to increase the likelihood that their properties stay mosquito-free.

Archery and Rifle Shooting Programs in NYS Public Schools– Should They be Banned? Manhattan New York State Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal has authored a bill that would ban riflery, trap shooting, and archery in public schools throughout the state. While her proposal is in response to the rise in gun violence in schools, others believe this is an extreme reaction that will negatively impact students. These programs provide a sport for students that may not be interested in other sporting activities. Sports like Archery and Rifle Shooting are a part of extracurricular activities at colleges across the country, including Columbia University and John Jay College here in New York City. In addition, some colleges offer scholarships to students who participate in these sporting activities. In 2016, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shared that interest in the National Archery in Schools Program is growing in New York State. “The second annual New York State National Archery in Schools Program tournament was held with great success on March 4 in Utica New York, with 513 students from 23 school districts participating in three divisions: High School, grades 9-12; Middle School, grades 6-8; and Elementary School, grades 4-5.” Although a private school, Staten Island’s own St. Joseph By The Sea took first Place in 2016. https:// www.dec.ny.gov/press/106135.html In 2012, the New York City Department of Education partnered with Easton Development Sports Foundation to bring Archery to NYC schools. As part of the partnership, Easton supplied the equipment at no cost to the school. The decision to participate in the program was left up to each individual school and principal. h t t p s : / / w w w. g o o g l e . c o m / a m p / s / n y p o s t . com/2012/04/02/arch-madness/amp/ Staten Island’s Intermediate School 24, offers an afterschool archery program, called Hunger Games, stating, “Archery provides a fundamental relaxation quality in that the archer must be focused on the im-

mediate moment. Archery is a rewarding activity, blending physical and mental resources. http://barnes24.org/ourpages/auto/2017/9/18/48591872/S_T_E_P_%20ASC%20 Fall%202017-2018.pdf Mrs. Jodi Sanchez commented, “My son is an 8th grader at I.S. 24. He participated in the Archery class last year and he loved it. He liked it so much that he is continuing Archery at the Zimmer Club. He is hoping to participate in an Archery program when he moves on to high school.” I.S. 24 student Katniss Ricca said, “It was a great experience. I had helpful teachers and made lots of friends. Popping balloons for Barnes and Noble cash and winning the tournament was amazing!” Another I.S. 24 parent, Mrs. Claudine Jorgensen, praised the program, “My son took the Hunger Games. He loved it so much that it turned him on to Archery and he’s been taking lessons for three years. This program was amazing, introducing my son to safety rules that he would never have learned.” Assemblywoman Rosenthal introduced this legislation in response to the Parkland, Florida school shooting because the perpetrator participated on the school’s rifle shooting team. The Assemblywoman believes rifle shooting and archery school programs are the catalyst for incidents like Parkland. Unfortunately, this reaction broad-brushes an entire school athletic program as the direct cause of this violent incident. Assemblywoman Rosenthal does not take into account that an emotional, psychological issue played a pivotal role in this tragedy. This underscores the need for school districts to hire significantly more counselors and incorporate intervention services in schools across the country. There are no active gun ranges in NYC Department of Education schools and, according to a DOE spokesperson, they do not centrally track schoolbased student clubs.

How

music and singing benefits children Music is everywhere: on the radio, in movies and television shows and as a backdrop when shopping or celebrating milestones. Music is an integral part of cultures all over the world. Music can express emotions not easily conveyed otherwise. It also provides a sense of community and belonging and can help unite the divided.

Playing musical instruments or singing has a number of benefits. From the earliest days after their birth, children can be calmed by music. Music helps people work out their feelings and can be uplifting and comforting when people need a boost. While many people are familiar with the mood-enhancing benefits of music, they may not know that music also has developmental benefits. According to Don Campbell, internationally known educator and author of “The Mozart Effect for Children,” music enhances intelligence, coordination, emotional expression, creativity, and socialization skills. Studies have suggested that music and movement affect all areas of development. Music can bolster listening skills, improve motor skills, assist with problem solving, and promote spatial-temporal reasoning. Many others say that

june 2018

www.siparent.com

5/24/18 11:43 AM

music can calm and focus the mind, which is why it so often employed by therapists. In the book, “The Importance of Music,” author Ellen Judson cites a 10-year study that tracked more than 25,000 middle and high school students. The study showed that students in music classes receive higher scores on standardized tests than students with little to no musical involvement. In addition, singing and engaging in musical appreciation sharpens one’s ability to communicate. Learning a piece of information attached to a tune will more readily embed that information in the brain. For example, many children learn the alphabet via song. Pairing lessons with song can help anyone retain information more easily. Music also is fun, so much so that kids may not realize they’re actually learning while singing. Matthew Freeman, development manager of “Sing up,” a national singing project to help enhance music in children’s education, states that children don’t think of singing as work and may be more willing to participate. Song can be used to reinforce all different subjects, from language arts to mathematics. Children or adults who are apprehensive about meeting new people can use music as a means to open the door to new friendships. Joining a choral group will immediately introduce people to others who enjoy music as well. Group singing is less intimidating than singing alone, so it takes some of the pressure off of a person and can staunch performance anxiety. Music is beneficial throughout one’s life and can be an enjoyable way to make learning more fun.

Question: I thought that my role of homework enforcer would be over in the summer. Now, both of my children have brought home assignments that need to be completed over the summer. They are not small assignments, but will take several weeks to complete. Am I the only one to complain about this? – Overworked Answer: You definitely are not the only parent to face the fact that school is more and more becoming a year-round task. The nitty gritty behind teachers giving summer assignments is simple. Children, especially those in elementary school, need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. For example, if they don’t engage in some academic work in math, almost all students lose about two months of grade equivalency between the beginning and end of summer vacation.

The story in reading is a bit different. Children who read a lot or participate in library reading programs may actually make some gains in their reading skills. The secret is that to do so, they must read. And summer homework reading assignments will help them keep their reading skills sharp. Summer homework definitely pays more academic dividends in the elementary and middle-school years than in high school. If you want your children to start the next year truly ready for handling academics, you will need to grin and bear it and organize time for them to study from day one in the summer. It will be far more productive than cramming all their homework into the last two weeks of summer vacation.

Question: My first-grader has been slow to make friends during the school year. There are not a lot of children in our neighborhood, so I am afraid that she will have a rather

lonely summer. How can I avoid this and put her on the track to having some friends at school next year? -- Too Lonely Answer: Hopefully you have made the acquaintance of several mothers of first-graders in your daughter’s class. Contact them now, and make plans for some summer activities. Family activities can be a good way to break the ice in forming friendships. You could organize family trips to the zoo, water parks or circus, as well as backyard barbecues. This could be a start on helping your daughter have more friends next year at school. Think also about some activities that your child might enjoy this summer, from taking ballet or gymnastics lessons to even playing a sport or attending a day camp at a YMCA. Ask your child who in her class she might enjoy doing some of these activities with her. Then see if you can arrange with the child’s parents for the other girl to join your child in this activity.

Beyond online “Do-It-Yourself Camps,” many communities offer programs -- usually lasting a week -- that let children make all kinds of things, from go-karts to desserts to video games as well as participate in a great variety of activities.

Another thing that could help your daughter find friends is to sign her up for a social skills class. It will help her learn more about making friends.

Answer: You will definitely be able to still find some summer programs for your children. Not all will be filled up yet. • Start with your school to see what summer programs they are putting on. Many offer more than one. • Local libraries almost always will offer programs. • Investigate if local colleges and universities have summer camp programs or courses. One of the new kids on the block in summer programs is “Do-It-Yourself Summer Camp (DIY).” Just go online and start looking at all the possibilities under this heading. Many are quite educational. Their advantage is that they are generally free or quite inexpensive and can be done at your home. For example, education.com offers more than 4000 activities.

thinking of camp? 5 Reasons Why Summer Camp is a Good Choice for Kids

Summer vacation offers students a respite from lessons and the routine of school. Children might once have eagerly awaited those final days of classes so they could lounge poolside, skip rocks across ponds and spend the long days of the season playing with friends. But many of today’s youngsters spend much of their summer vacations indoors playing with their digital devices.

Perhaps that’s why one of the last vestiges of the classic summer vacation escape summer camp - remains such a viable option for parents who want their children to get outdoors once the school year ends. Although kids needn’t be in camp all summer long, a week or two can benefit campers of all ages. The following are five reasons why summer camp might be the right fit this year. 1. Explore talents. Summer camps help young people explore their unique interests and talents. Under an organized, yet often easygoing, camp schedule, kids can dabble in sports, arts and crafts, leadership, community support, and so many other activities that may not be fully available to them elsewhere.

2. Physical activity: Lots of camps build their itineraries around physical activities that take place outdoors. Campers may spend their time swimming, running, hiking, playing sports, climbing, and so much more. This can be a welcome change for kids accustomed to living sedentary lifestyles. Regular physical activity has many health benefits and can set a foundation for healthy habits as an adult. 3. Gain confidence. Day and sleepaway camps offer campers the opportunity to get comfortable in their own skin. Camps can foster activities in self-esteem by removing the academic measures of success and fill in with noncompetitive opportunities to succeed. Campers learn independence, decision-making skills and the ability to

thrive outside of the shadow of their parents, siblings or other students. 4. Try new things. Camp gives children the chance to try new things, whether that’s learning to cook, exploring new environments or embracing a new sport or leisure activity. Opening oneself up to new opportunities can build character and prove enlightening for children.

5. Make new friends. Camp is a great place to meet new people and make lifelong friends. Campers flood in from areas near and far. This provides kids with a chance to expand their social circles beyond their immediate neighborhoods and schools.

Camps benefit children in a variety of ways. Lessons learned in camp can strengthen values, build confidence, develop coping mechanisms when adversity strikes, and enable campers to make lifelong friends.

feature / tweens & teens kids are hesitant, parents can quiz them about what to do in certain situations, such as how to respond to a baby crying or what to do if a child is asking for his or her parents. Going over these topics before kids begin seeking babysitting jobs can help parents gauge if their children are ready to babysit while also helping them prepare for interviews.

Prepare Your Child Before Accepting a Job

tips for parents of aspiring babysitters Many tweens and teenagers babysit to earn money. Babysitting can instill responsibility in children as they’re on the cusp of becoming more independent. Would-be babysitters who have cared for younger siblings may know what to expect, but parents of prospective babysitters with no such experience may want to heed the following tips before their youngsters agree to look after a friend’s or neighbor’s child.

Discuss the responsibility of babysitting. Babysitting is a big responsibility, and parents can discuss this with their children before they accept any babysitting gigs. Children old enough to babysit should be old enough to understand the trust others are placing in them when paying them to look after their children. If would-be babysitters cannot recognize that or downplay just how big a responsibility they’re taking on, then they might not be ready to be a babysitter. Ask your child if they have any questions about babysitting. Prospective clients will no doubt feel more comfortable with babysitters who ask thoughtful questions, and one sign that a child is ready to accept the responsibility of babysitting is asking such questions. If

Get the contact information for guardians of the child your son or daughter will be babysitting. Before kids accept their first babysitting job, their parents should not hesitate to ask to meet the parents or guardians of the child they will be babysitting. This can calm parents’ nerves about sending their children to look after a stranger’s children. Such a meeting also provides an opportunity for parents to get the contact information, including name, address, home, and mobile phone numbers, of their children’s clients. In addition, visiting a client’s home in advance gives kids a chance to learn how to use home security systems if necessary. Program emergency numbers into babysitters’ mobile phones. Parents trusting their children to neighborhood babysitters may or not leave a list of emergency contact numbers on their refrigerator doors. But parents of would-be babysitters can exercise caution and program such numbers into their childrens’ mobile phones in advance. This ensures babysitters will have access to the numbers no matter what. Arrange for transportation home. Arrange transportation home in advance. If a child’s clients will be going out for a night on the town where they expect to consume alcohol, parents can pick up their own children so they recognize the importance of never getting into a vehicle with someone who has been consuming alcohol. If clients will not be consuming alcohol, sitters’ parents can speak with them directly to ensure they will provide a ride home at the end of the night.
