Free Summer Meals School is out, but grumbling bellies don’t break for summer. The Summer Meals Program has returned this year, providing free, healthy breakfast and lunch to all children ages 18 and under at hundreds of locations around the City until September 1 (with the exception of July 4 and August 21). The Summer Meals Program is available at various public schools, community pool centers, libraries, and other locations around the city. Children do not need to register or show any kind of documentation or ID to receive their free meal. To find a Summer Meals location or view a menu, go to schoolfoodnyc.org or download the “SchoolFood App.” You can also link directly at siparent.com.

Go to schoolfoodnyc.org for more information

Enhanced Special Education in Catholic Schools Beginning in September, a new special education program will be offered in three Catholic Schools in Staten Island. The Enhanced Special Education Program will be piloted at Our Lady Star of the Sea, St. Adalbert’s and Holy Rosary. While the schools already serve students with special needs, a targeted investment is being made for additional inclusion of these students. Go to siparent.com to link to more information

on the new program offerings.

“This is not going to just benefit the children who have these learning needs,” said Dr. Timothy J. McNiff, superintendent of schools for the archdiocese. “The diversity that they bring to our schools is going to benefit all children. You have to know how to embrace, accept and work with diversity, which certainly includes people who learn and work differently.”

Impractical Jokers: Homecoming Staten Island is no stranger to hit TV shows, and Impractical Jokers is decidedly one of best. A new exhibit at the Staten Island Museum is giving museum-goers an in-depth view of the show and its hilarious cast. Impractical Jokers: Homecoming explores the story of four longtime friends from Staten Island whose hidden-camera, comedic television show, Impractical Jokers, has become a pop culture phenomenon. Steeped in embarrassment and awkward situations to make you laugh and cringe, the humor is built upon a foundation of trust and camaraderie amongst the four guys, James “Murr” Murray, Sal Vulcano, Brain “Q” Quinn, and Joe Gatto. See original costumes, props and art created over the past seven seasons. View new interviews, episode highlights and learn about behind-the-scenes production, including some secrets. Take a journey with the Jokers from high school hijinks to mainstream comedic success that all started on the shores of Staten Island. Interactive surprises are found throughout the museum to make the Jokers’ exhibition experience as unexpected as the Impractical Jokers themselves. Regular museum

Disability Day Poster Contest Winners Assemblyman Michael Cusick recently met with several Staten Island elementary school students in Albany to call attention to New Yorkers living with various physical and mental impairments and to celebrate their numerous accomplishments. “I will always work to improve conditions, and make life easier, for men, women, and children living with disabilities. These young men and women are the future leaders of our world and it is important that we provide them with the tools to understand issues that affect everyday people. They are an inspiration to the state and nation, and will always have a friend in me.” Assemblyman Cusick said.

See performances from Wicked and The Band’s Visit right here in Staten Island!

Wild turkeys gathering near the hospital entrance is no rare sight in South Beach.

The students present at the State Capitol were winners in the annual Disability Day Poster Contest. From Kindergarten to 5th grade, the winners who were honored at Albany are: Jayden Balatucan, Anthony Pizzo, Salvatore Ragucci, Michael Tisi, Scarlett Serdaros, Jordyn Carmelengo, Chiara Selfridge, Emma Kokkinakis, Joseph Iacono, Marcella Del Balso, Daniel Boylan, Nico Vitagliano, Star Papas, Jayla Rae DiTringo, Lily Ahlborn, Fifth Grade Sara Pukala, Nicole Kindja, and Madison Hoerle.

Broadway in the Boros Get a taste of Broadway without leaving the Island! Broadway in the Boros is back for its third year bringing free shows to all boroughs outside of Manhattan, including Staten Island of course. Cast members and musicians from 2018 Tony-nominated The Band’s Visit and Wicked will be performing at Lighthouse Point Plaza (waterfront adjacent to the National Lighthouse Museum) on Friday, July 13, 12-1pm. The event will also feature Broadway tickets and giveaways, trivia games and more, hosted by Julie James, host of the popular SiriusXM Radio show “On Broadway.” New York City Council Member Debi Rose said, “Our city is a center of musical talent and energy, and Broadway in the Boros gives Staten Islanders a sample of that talent without having to cross the harbor. As a lifelong fan of musicals, I’m thrilled to help bring dozens of Broadway stars to our beautiful waterfront space at Lighthouse Point Plaza for all Staten Islanders to enjoy. I thank my partners in

Time to Go, Turkeys! The chicken might have a reason to cross the road, but no one really knows why wild turkeys roam the streets of Staten Island. Now we are finally saying “gobble, gobble, goodbye” to the strangely iconic birds of South Beach. City Council Minority Leader Steven Matteo and Speaker Corey Johnson announced they have secured $100,000 in funding for the capture and relocation of wild turkeys around the campus of Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) in Ocean Breeze and the surrounding East Shore communities. Don’t worry – the turkeys won’t be hurt; a new forever home awaits at a farm animal sanctuary in Upstate New York. Poultry puns aside, the animals pose a considerable public safety risk. According to a statement from Minority Leader Matteo’s office, the aggressive birds congregate near hospital entrances, often cause traffic and sometimes accidents, interfere with ambulances and patient drop-offs, and leave unsanitary droppings on the sidewalks. “These turkeys have been a nuisance to Staten Islanders for far too long, and the hazards they pose to public safety are serious. That is why I worked with several agencies and my colleagues on a safe, humane capture-and-relocation plan, and why I am committed to seeing this through until the end,” Matteo said.

Her kids are seriously flawless. Come to think of it, there’s actually a good chance that they’re aliens. And they really need to head back to their home planet, because they’re making the rest of us look bad. Super PTA Mom – Super PTA Mom wants to change the world, one bake sale at a time. And thank goodness for her, because someone has to deal with all those pesky school politics and holiday fairs. PTA meetings make socially anxious parents want to crawl under a rock, so thank goodness for parents who truly care about the school budget.

The Top 10 Super Moms.indd 2

Super Healthy Mom – Her kids don’t have a clue what gluten is, but they are terrified of it. She’d rather die than be seen holding a Happy Meal and GMO’s are sure to be the cause of earth’s apocalypse. She told me so. Super Workout Mom – Somehow her post-pregnancy body is even better than her pre-pregnancy one. Maybe because she actually wears yoga pants TO DO YOGA. Super Career Mom – People often ask this mom “HOW do you do it all?” but no one really knows the answer. Her mysterious ability to be both a boss at work and also be a boss at home is seemingly impossible, but somehow she does it. And she’s got the financial ability to purchase a decent home in 21st century America to show for it. Super Clean House Mom – You know how you turn into a psychotic house-scrubbing maniac every time company is coming over? Well Super Clean House Mom is like that all the time, even without the looming threat of some snarky relative

Super Fun Mom – If moms were government organizations, this one would be the post office. Neither snow, nor hail, nor rain, nor sleet will keep this determined mama indoors with her kids. She’s at the park, the museum, the movies, the zoo, the amusement park, and occasionally the NASA Space Station boarding a rocket ship for a family tour of the moon. She’s the most fun mom ever. Super Friend Mom – This mom boasts a pretty impressive lineup of BFF’s, especially for someone at least a decade or two out of college. Her kids’ playdate schedule is booked solid thru next year, and she actually still talks to people ON THE PHONE. Like, just to say hi and stuff. Super Holiday Mom – She has the kids’ Halloween costumes purchased in August, Christmas shopping finished by September, and Easter baskets ready to go in February. Her outdoor decorations seem to defy the laws of physics, with displays that occasionally cause traffic accidents on her street. Her Elf on the Shelf has a more exciting life than most Hollywood celebrities and some suspect her husband is Santa Claus himself. Super Pregnant Mom – She’s nine months pregnant, wheeling a double stroller through the supermarket with one arm, and pushing a cart full of groceries with the other. She accomplishes more in her third trimester of pregnancy than some people do in their entire life. It’s almost as though she doesn’t even realize there’s a person living inside her. Super Not Super at All Mom – I’ll let you in on a little secret: Super Moms don’t really exist. A Super Mom is only “super” on the surface. Beneath the façade of awesomeness is a regular mom, like you and me, who is just as flawed as everyone else. It’s great to be inspired by her, but try not to be too envious. Super Jealous Mom is not a Super Mom at all. By Jeannine Cintron, a.k.a. Super Stressed Out Mom.

parents and cut down on that phrase parents dread to hear, “I’m bored.” 1. Communicate Your Expectations. Sit down with you kids and lay out a plan, as well as, what you expect. Clearly older kids will have more responsibility but that doesn’t mean the little ones get off easy. 2. Schools Out For Summer, No Laying Around. Kids need to be active everyday so don’t leave home projects, chores or personal activities for the weekends. Make sure there are a handful of projects to be completed everyday, including ones that help you like fixing dinner, doing dishes or laundry.

Keep the kids moving all summer long

don’t let your child become a summer couch potato The percentage of children aged six to twelve who were physically active three or more times a week had its biggest drop in five years and is now under 25%, according to new data. With the laziest time of year for kids (summer break) upon us, have you thought about how your kids will stay busy as the temperatures go up?

16 couch potato.indd 2

There are an estimated 15 million summer-time latchkey kids (ages 5-12 who stay home alone) in the U.S. and you’d think that these kids would naturally be drawn to visiting the local pool or running around outside with friends. Instead, they use the summer to sit around and engage in obesityrelated behaviors like watching TV, playing video games, eating sugar snacks and fewer vegetables according to a study from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. To help combat this problem, just about every professional sports organization has launched a campaign to promote healthy kids. But what if you can’t connect with one of them or live in an area where these programs don’t exist? Gregg Murset, CEO of BusyKid, recommends that parents take control of the situation and use these tips to put a plan in place that will keep kids active all summer long, make things easier on

3. Build a “Busy Calendar” For The Kids. Use a tool like BusyKid to help compile a “Busy Calendar.” Each day kids can see what needs to be done and can click projects/activities one at a time. This will help teach them responsibility, accountability and time management. 4. Assign By Strengths. Different kids are good at different things. Maybe one of your kids hates doing things outside. Maybe another loves the sunshine and fresh air. Besides assigning things by age, you should also consider their particular preferences when assigning tasks. 5. Find Balance. Make sure the tasks have a good balance of chores and fun. For every hour of chores, try to have one hour of another activity where your kids can enjoy themselves. After all, it’s their summer too. 6. Step It Off. If your child has a mobile phone, chances are it comes with a health app that can count steps. If it doesn’t, there are plenty available. Add one and have a weekly contest to see who puts in the most miles. 7. Reward Success. If all goes according to your plan, your kids will be moving around a bunch this summer and plenty of projects will be done. Make sure to reward them for working hard or staying with the plan. Paying an allowance is a great way to reward your kids, and can be a catalyst to learning about saving, spending and investing wisely. By Gregg Murset, CEO of BusyKid Chores and Allowance App, a 2018 National Parenting Product Award winner.

MENTAL ILLNESS Breaking the Stigma Far too often, there is a lack of sympathy or understanding the impact mental illness can have on an individual, their family and the community as a whole. I know first-hand what impact mental illness can have on a family. My mother suffered from mental illness. From when I was about 6 years old my mother fought depression and emotional issues that took a toll on her daily life. She was diagnosed with having several nervous breakdowns during her life, spending weeks at a time in the hospital. It was always a difficult time for my Dad, brother and me seeing her this way. My family would tell me stories of the difficult times she and her siblings had growing up. Did that play a role in her mental illness? Quite possibly. As you can imagine my mother’s mental illness was hard on our family at times, especially for my Dad. Although I am sure it took a toll on him, he always remained her biggest champion, forever by her side. Reflecting on that now, I see that quality he had is true to his character and it helped keep our family strong. The experience with mental illness so close to me had an impact on my job as a police officer. We handled many jobs involving EDPs (Emotionally Disturbed Persons). I guess that is why those jobs seemed to tug at my heart, especially when it was a woman around my mother’s age. My intention in sharing this is not for sympathy, but simply to raise awareness to the fact that mental illness comes in all forms and it can impact any family. The world needs a little more EMPATHY! Resources for Children Staten Island Mental Health Society Early Childhood Services. The SIMHS’s four Head Start/Early Learn Centers serve more than 300 children (at any one time) between the ages of 3 and 5 each year. Pre-K is offered at each Head Start center. Foster an “Outside” Connection to Learning!

Play Summer Games

Summer is the perfect time to show kids that learning doesn’t just happen at school. And one of the best ways to make at-home learning fun during the summer is to take it outside! You can conduct simple experiments that may be too messy for indoors, find various bugs and birds, give writing prompts about nature, examine flowers, trees, and gardens or try a nature-themed art project.

While there are plenty of games specifically designed to build math skills, you probably already have a few options sitting in your garage. For instance, a yard game like cornhole requires on-the-spot addition. Monopoly also requires players to count. Math Slam, Connect Four, Ticket to Ride, Even Steven’s Odd, and Rush Hour are just a few others that help foster math skill building. Even hopscotch helps build valuable skills!

Choose a Framework to Keep Summer Learning on Track

Show Them the Value of Money

Having a framework is very helpful for parents in focusing their children on periods of dedicated learning time each week throughout the summer. Get kids in the habit of sitting down for skills-building activities using mazes and puzzles to keep it fun.

One of the best ways for kids to practice math is by learning to control their own summer spending money. For older kids, you may give them more control over saving and spending. For younger children, you may need to mentor and monitor more closely. Either way, allow your child to earn

Summer means more time to take things slow. And by asking your child to help prepare meals, you’re also developing his math skills. Choose a recipe that has a lot of measurements and halve or double it for an added math challenge. For younger kids, this may require a bit of assistance. It’s a great way to visualize different measurements, perform some calculations, and end up with a tasty treat-all in just an hour or so! Many families choose to take trips over the summer, and this presents a great opportunity for children to practice math skills. Get a paper map or find an electronic one, and ask your kids to calculate potential distances. You might even involve your child in planning a route or comparing distances, choosing the best routes based on traffic or construction, or adding up the legs of a journey. Listening is an excellent way for kids to engage with material that they might not otherwise. Choose education-oriented or fun podcasts that you can listen to together or alone, preferably ones that speak to your child’s interests. Try videos as well; there are many videos for kids to practice their vocabulary words or you can make a video together. Make Reading a Family Affair

Not only is maintaining a reading habit over the summer essential for staying up to speed, it can also be a great avenue for family bonding. Try starting a family book club that meets on one scheduled night or morning a week. If your children are at different reading levels, one might read the book solo, while the other works with you. Let them choose the topic. There are many great tools to help you select the right book; check out the booklists at Common Sense Media for reading list inspiration. Pose questions like “What surprised you most about the book?” or “Who was your favorite character?” You’ll learn more about what your children have on their minds, all while keeping skills sharp for the school year ahead.

parenting the old-fashioned way Why the “My Kids Turned Out Just Fine” Argument is Invalid How many times have you argued with your parents or in-laws about how to take care of your kids? I can remember numerous heated discussions with my mother-in-law in particular when my children were infants. She just didn’t understand all the current parenting rules. Why do they have to sleep on their back? Why can’t they have a blanket in their crib? Why can’t they eat that food yet? She often said, “I didn’t follow any of these rules and my kids grew up just fine.”

Grandparents battle.indd 2

Well, it turns out that these disagreements should not be taken lightly and modern parents should stand their ground. A recent study from Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider, warns that grandparents who practice outdated health guidelines – sometimes based on myths and old wives’ tales – can put their grandchildren’s safety at risk. As of 2012, more than seven million grandchildren in the United States are being raised by nearly three million grandparents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This trend is due to factors including the opioid epidemic, parental incarceration, or problems with parents’ physical or mental health. This number does not even include many of us who are raising our children but still rely on our parents to watch our kids

while we’re at work, out of town, or even out on an occasional Saturday night. However, a lot has changed over the decades since these grandparents were parents themselves, so it is critical for them to keep up with the latest pediatric guidelines. The study was conducted by surveying 636 grandparents in the United States. Researchers were shocked at how many health-related questions the grandparents responded to incorrectly. One issue highlighted in the study is that 44 percent of the respondents mistakenly believed that ice baths are a good way to bring down a very high fever. In reality, ice baths pose a hypothermia risk. Another major concern involved sleep guidelines. Almost a quarter of the grandparents in the study did not

feature / parenting know that infants should be put to sleep on their back, not on their stomach or side, to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). When asked whether scrapes or cuts heal better with or without a bandage, 68 percent of grandparents did not know that wounds should be covered. Staying up to date with new parenting advice can be quite challenging, especially in this fast-paced technological society. With every new Facebook post or breaking news story, parents need to evaluate how that information impacts their children. So it’s understandable that grandparents might have difficulty keeping up. If your parents are helping to take care of your kids, then it’s critical to build a positive, working relationship with them so that you can feel comfortable leaving your precious ones in their hands, and they can feel confident that they are doing everything properly. It’s really our responsibility to continuously educate the grandparents about the latest guidelines, and their duty to be willing to listen and learn even if it contradicts how they raised us years ago. If you know that your parents will be involved from the beginning then start getting them educated about the latest parenting do’s and don’ts while you’re pregnant. Here are some ways to keep the grandparents involved and in-the-know so that they have the tools they need to successfully care for their grandchildren in this day and age. • Take grandparents shopping with you to purchase or register for all the baby equipment. Spend the time to explain why your baby needs these items and how they work. For example, when we were kids, we were not strapped into a rear-facing five-point harness car seat. • Buy your parents special books about being a grandparent or copies of the parenting books you’re relying on. • Bring grandparents along for parenting and baby safety classes offered at your local hospital, community center, or baby store. • Once the baby is born, invite the grandparent caring for your child to pediatrician appointments so they can hear firsthand what the doctor recommends. Give them a chance to ask questions as well. • Introduce the grandparents to the same resources you’re referring to for the latest child safety news, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Healthy Children website and Baby Center.

carefree summer days any more with no thought of schoolwork, especially math. With the adoption of Common Core Standards (grades K-8), children are now expected to enter the next grade knowing everything that they learned in math in the previous grades. What’s unfortunate about this is that most children, whether they are part of a low-income or high-income family, may lose as much as two months of learning in math. This year our summer learning activities for children are all in math. Unlike reading, an effort has to be made to bring math into daily life. For even more math learning activities and silly math riddles visit our Dear Teacher website at dearteacher.com

Using Statistics: Statistics is one part of math that is emphasized in the Common Core math curriculum. Have your children sit in a spot where a number of people will walk by. You will want to stay with younger children. Depending on their ages, they can observe the shoes of 10, 50 or 100 people. They can make a simple chart headed “Velcro Fasteners and Shoelaces.” For each person who walks by, they can indicate with a mark how his or her shoes are fastened. They can skip the people wearing flip-flops and sandals. When they have finished their observations, they can use statistics to describe their findings. For example, a young child might say: nine out of 10 people had shoelaces. An older child could say: 20 percent of the people had Velcro fasteners. Reviewing Geometric Shapes: Young children can start this activity by using from three to five Popsicle sticks to make flat shapes and name them. Older students can use toothpicks and go on to see if they can build shapes with as many as 12 sides and name them.

6/21/18 2:31 PM

Once children have built flat shapes, they should move on to building and naming solids. The sticks and toothpicks can be held together with marshmallows, gumdrops or clay. Younger children can construct pyramids and cubes, while older ones can try to construct such challenging forms as dodecagons, tetrahedrons and icosahedrons. No matter what they build, it is important that children name each figure and count the number of its sides. A challenge: children can use 24 sticks or toothpicks to form a square with nine squares inside it. They should study the figure carefully. It doesn’t just have nine squares. Challenge your children to find all 14 squares within the square. Search online “square with nine squares inside it” to find the answer if necessary. Topology Is a New Math Topic to Many Students: Topology is a math topic that many of you may not have heard of. However, it is increasingly being introduced to your children in middle school and even earlier. It is the study of surfaces and is often called “rubber sheet geometry.” It deals with the ways that surfaces can be twisted, bent, pulled or otherwise deformed from one shape to another. Young children can begin to understand topology by drawing a figure such as a person or animal on a slightly inflated balloon. Then they can pull on the balloon from two sides to distort their original drawing. While the image will be different, it will still be a person or an animal. The classic topological example is making a coffee cup and a doughnut equivalent to each other. It may sound impossible, but it isn’t. Just make a coffee cup out of clay. Then you can twist, bend and shape the clay to form the shape of a doughnut. The equivalence is that they both have one hole. Here is a math problem relating to topology: Find a blank map that shows a region of the United States and print it out. Then have your children color it so no two bordering states have the same color. They should be able to do it using only four colors. Prime and Composite Numbers: A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 that can only be divided by itself and 1. A composite number is a whole number that can be divided evenly by numbers other than 1 or itself. What your children will do in this activity is cut squares of paper (as many as 12), or they can use playing or index cards. Have your children use the squares or cards to make rectangles with numbers such as 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and so on. If they make rectangles with 5, they will discover that it is only possible to make one rectangle, showing that 5 is a prime number. If they make rectangles with 6 squares or cards, they will have several choices, showing that 6 is not a prime but a composite number. Have the children make rectangles with a variety of numbers to determine if a number is prime or composite. A mathematician by the name of Goldbach made a conjecture that every even number is the sum of two prime numbers. Have young children test it with small numbers and older ones with much larger numbers. july 2018

Seashell Wind Chimes Collecting seashells on the beach is a childhood pastime that most never outgrow. This summer, turn your shoreline treasures into a set of beautiful wind chimes. This activity from education.com requires just a little help from mom or dad. Materials Needed: • About 15 small seashells • 4-5 straws

• Fishing wire • Scissors • Hole punch

• 1 Styrofoam cup • Pencil • Drill (For parents use only)

Directions: 1. Thoroughly wash the seashells and allow them to completely dry. 2. Have a parent drill a tiny hole in each shell. 3. Cut each straw into 4 sections. 4. Cut about 3-inches from the open end of the Styrofoam cup. Distribute 3 hole punches evenly around the cup (or a parent can use the drill for the holes). 5. With a pencil (or the drill), make 2 small holes at the top of the cup. This will be to hold up the wind chime. 6. Alternate stringing 5 shells and the straw bits onto one piece of fishing wire. Do this a total of three times. 7. Take each fishing wire with the straw and the shells (there should be three) and tie a knot on the ends. Take the other end and string it through a hole in the cup, then knot it. Repeat for all three. 8. String a piece of fishing wire through the holes at the top of the Styrofoam cup and tie it in a knot. 9. Decorate the cup any way you like. Once you’re done, hang your seashell wind chime outside for family, friends and neighbors to enjoy.

Always Practice Summer Sun Safety

B

eing safe in the sun won’t take the fun out of summer activities, but exercising a little caution will help beach- and pool-goers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

· Know the risks of UV exposure. Sunlight is needed to engage vitamin D production in the body, but too much sun exposure can do more harm than good. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from the sun and other sources, such as tanning beds, are the primary cause of skin cancer. Exposure also can lead to sunburns, premature aging/wrinkling and eye damage. · Use only broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen. Look for a sunblock product that boasts an SPF of at least 30. The FDA requires any sunscreen with an SPF below 15 to carry a warning that it only protects against sunburn, not skin cancer or skin aging. Find a sunscreen that works against UVA and UVB rays as well. UVA rays are mostly responsible for contributing to skin

Fun Page.indd 3

cancer and premature aging. Reapply frequently, especially when swimming or engaging in activities that cause sweating. · Know the difference between water-resistant and waterproof sunscreens. Manufacturers are no longer allowed to claim that their sunscreens are waterproof or sweatproof. A sunscreen may be able to repel water for a short time, but it should be reapplied when leaving the water or when spending long stretches in the water. · Cover up whenever possible. It may seem counterintuitive in hot weather, but covering up can be beneficial to the skin and actually keep a person cooler. Wear wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeve tops and light-colored pants. Some materials are made with reflective properties, while others actually boast their own SPF. july 2018

avocado hacks There’s nothing more delicious than a smooth and buttery avocado. Too bad the window of time for that is barely longer than a day or two! Here’s how to ensure you have ripe and creamy avocados whenever you need them. Freeze Them! Remove the avocado skin and pit, then either cut into chunks, mash, or slice in half (whichever you prefer). Then spray or sprinkle lime or lemon juice (about a teaspoon per avocado). Seal in a plastic bag and remove as much air as possible, then freeze and use as needed. When stored properly, avocados will last 3-6 months in the freezer. Bake Them! Wrap the whole avocado in foil (skin on) and place in a baking dish, then bake in a 200 degree oven for 1020 minutes, or until soft. The avocado will be softened, although the taste and texture will be slightly different. Still works in a pinch!

no room for bullying in sports It’s not fun to get picked on Local sportswriter Joe LoVerde coached youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s now joined by his son, Mike, a sandlot baseball player on the Island and a senior at Lyndon State College in Vermont, where he’s on the baseball team and majors in Electronic Journalism Arts. Maybe your child has just joined a new a team and is attending his first practice. He’s a bit on the shy side and is still learning the sport. The other kids, being kids and oblivious to or uncaring of the difficulty your child is having, don’t exactly go out of their way to make him feel welcome.

“Bad News Bears” movie; the boy Tanner called a “booger-eatin’ moron” and whose cap was filled with ketchup by a few mean Yankees players? For Timmy, being a member of the Bears wasn’t always a pleasant experience. For sure, there are Timmy Lupuses struggling to fit in on many youth sports teams.

As the season goes on, your child doesn’t exactly distinguish himself as one of the better players. In fact, he makes some mistakes that hurt the team. One of his teammates talks about him behind his back often. His goal seems to be to have your son ostracized by the other players — because that’s what bullies do. Eventually, your child doesn’t want to participate anymore. And what you had hoped would be a positive experience turns sour to the point that he gives you trouble when it’s time to go to a game or practice.

Then there’s Scotty Smalls on the movie “The Sandlot.” He knew nothing about baseball but tries to get the kids on the neighborhood team to give him a chance. Most of the children call him an “L-Seven weenie,” a “square” and don’t want him around. But the best player of the group, Benny Rodriguez, gives him an endorsement and the rest of the kids ultimately go along. There should be more Benny Rodriguezes.

We’ve seen it happen. Remember Timmy Lupus on the original

Tony Richardson, who played 17 seasons in the National Football League, including three with the New York Jets, knows what it means to be the odd child out. Being the youngest of seven children has its own challenges. But

as the child of a military parent whose family often had to move to a new city as his dad was relocated, Richardson often found himself as the new kid in the neighborhood and in his class. Often, just as he’d started to feel like he fit in, it was time to move again.

“I wore my brothers’ hand-me-downs, which meant my clothes were often too small for me,” Richardson recently told a group of middle schoolers at an anti-bullying conference in lower Manhattan. “Sometimes the first thing kids would say to me was, ‘Why are your pants so tight?’

“It’s not fun to get picked on.” It didn’t matter that he was a pretty big guy who grew to become 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds when he played in the NFL. “It’s even tougher today with social media,” Richardson said. “Somebody can take a picture of you and post it on Instagram and write something mean and the whole world can see it.” Richardson is a great role model. He not only got his bachelor’s degree at Auburn University but also went back to school during his playing years to get his MBA in finance. And he adopted a rescue dog with three legs, an Egyptian Baladi dog he named Rambo, who also was bullied. Baladi dogs are looked down upon in that country. “He was run over on purpose,” Richardson said. “But later tonight, I’ll take him out for a run.” Richardson is working with the Jets these days to promote their anti-bullying program, Jets Tackle Bullying, in which they partner with the group STOMP Out Bullying to raise awareness of the problem. They have put together a STOMP Out Bullying Educator’s Prevention Toolkit that helps educators teach tolerance and build character among their students. The toolkit is free to educators in the tri-state area. They also have developed online training modules. If you sign up for a toolkit or complete the online training you can attend the Jets’ annual Educator’s Symposium. And if your school attends the symposium, it is eligible to participate in student recognition programs. There are prizes involved, including tickets to games and memorabilia. The team is also planning to host parent anti-bullying clinics through local youth football programs at the team’s practice facility. Go to www.newyorkjets. com/community/tackle-bullying for more information about the entire program.

As we are all well aware, the drug problem is at epidemic proportions. With no “summer break” on the horizon, parents keep up their vigilance in accessing their child’s behavior. Everyone has been touched by this tragedy, whether within their own family or a family close to them. Don’t make the grave mistake of ignoring red flags because you believe it only happens to other people.

elow is some sound advice from Trevor McDonald, a recovering addict and alcoholic who uses his own painful experience to help others. We thank him for his candor. Signs Your Child Is Abusing Drugs or Alcohol Have you ever seen a movie where a convicted computer hacker ends up working for the feds? We’ve all seen that story play out at least once. Now, I feel like it’s my life. I’m not tech savvy enough to be a computer hacker, but my old ways have given me some insight on how good kids can follow a dangerous path. Through many years of personal experience, I have become somewhat of an expert at spotting the signs of substance abuse. And now, I spend a lot of time helping parents identify warning signs and get involved in early intervention. I’m not proud of this, but I certainly put my unsuspecting parents through the wringer. They didn’t want to believe I was an addict, so they ignored the signs – even when they became obvious. Although I love them for their faith in me, I don’t want to see you and your children follow the same path. That’s why I’ve put together some of the most common warning signs that your child is abusing drugs or alcohol. If you are noticing any of the following, it’s time to get to the root of the problem.

60

They shut you out When your kids were younger, they probably spent a lot of time telling you about their day at school. When they become preteens and teens, this naturally diminishes some. This is completely normal. But if you feel like your child is completely shutting you out, there may be deeper issues. The issue may or may not be substance abuse, so don’t jump to

conclusions until you have more information. Now is the time to talk about what’s going on. Looking back, I realize that this was the first sign I exhibited when I started using drugs. At the time, I was glad my parents stepped back and left me to my devices, but I now realize that was the worst thing they could have done.

• Red or glassy eyes • Unnatural pupil size (too large or too small) • Constant fidgeting or lethargy • Sudden onset of poor hygiene At first, it’s easy to write bloodshot eyes off as tiredness. But when your kid’s eyes are bloodshot all day every day, there’s a problem. For me, it was an unnatural pupil size that my parents questioned. That’s a difficult one to explain away, but somehow I did. Be on the lookout for lame excuses, because like me, your kids will be full of them. Don’t accept anything that feels wrong, even if you badly want to believe it. You don’t recognize their friends anymore When a child gets involved with drugs and alcohol, it’s likely that his or her crowd will change. They may maintain some childhood friends, but they’ll probably start spending more time with kids you’ve never met. With that said, it is somewhat normal for friendships to fade and flourish. If you notice that your child’s friend group changes, ask to meet the new friends. If your child refuses, it may be a sign that they’re up to no good. When I fell deeper into addiction, my childhood friends wanted nothing to do with me. I can’t say I blame them. Drugs were the only thing I cared about, and I’d lie, cheat, and steal to get them. So, I fell in with a crowd that was doing the same things I was. Life was much easier that way, as long as my parents didn’t ask too many questions.

They start looking different When a child gets involved with drugs or alcohol, they may or may not change their appearance, so be careful about overreacting to things like piercings or hair color. These forms of expression aren’t necessarily associated with substance abuse. On the other hand, some changes are very closely associated with substance abuse. Look for the following signs:

They withdraw from everything When your kids are involved with drugs, they’re not just standoffish with you; they’re that way with life. I was really involved in my school’s theater group before I started using drugs. I tried to keep it up through addiction, but that was impossible. Eventually, I got kicked out and spent most of my time alone. If you notice one or more of these signs, talk to your kids about what’s going on. Whether it’s drug abuse or not, you should get to the bottom of what’s going on. Since his recovery began, he has enjoyed using his talent for words to help spread treatment resources, addiction awareness, and general health knowledge.
