Students and Teachers from Edwin Markham IS 51R with their table at Clove Lakes Park.

Lunchroom Artwork Sends a Message Local young artists are hoping to step up lunchtable talk with issues that really matter. Students at two Staten Island middle schools have once again transformed ordinary lunchroom tables into meaningful works of art addressing major social issues in their communities as part of the LEAP (Learning Through an Expanded Arts Program) Public Art Exhibition. The students presented their original large-scale public artworks in two Staten Island parks last month. Students from P.S./I.S. South Richmond 25R proudly presented their ecosystems & environment project at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in June, while students from Edwin Markham I.S. 51R unveiled their anti-animal abuse project at Clove Lakes Park on the same day. The schools are two of ten participating schools around the city, all of which serve to create Middle School students and staff the largest student art exhibition in the history of NYC parks, as well as the first to span the from PS-IS South Richmond 25R five boroughs. The exhibition, “A View From The Lunchroom; Students Bringing Issues To with their table at Snug Harbor. The Table,” empowers young people to have a voice in their communities and to express themselves on important issues. School lunchroom tables were chosen as a canvas for the project because they are a symbol of student ideas and conversations. The talented youngsters were thrilled to participate in such a worthwhile project, and they definitely learned a lot in the process. “We were reading a book about how a boy needed water in his life, and we actually kind of got inspired about it, and realized that a lot of people in this world don’t have water. So we should take it into consideration and try to save what we have, because there’s not a lot of clean water on this earth that we have,” said Lavasha Marrero, a 12-year-old student at P.S./I.S. 25R. “I hope people tell other people about it, tell them to come visit the table, and take pictures of the table. I hope they learn that we really need water.”

everything you need to know about your community Cashless Tolls Put your money away -- the Verrazano Bridge is going cashless. Cashless toll booths have been installed and the bridge connecting Brooklyn to Staten Island will no longer be accepting cash from drivers. The MTA’s plan, pushed through by Governor Cuomo, is an effort to reduce congestion in New York City and allow traffic to flow smoothly. By the end of 2017, all New York City bridges and tunnels will be cashless. Motorists will no longer stop to pay tolls or show EZ Passes; instead they will continue driving past the toll and their EZ Pass will be charged automatically. Non-EZ Pass-holders will receive a bill in the mail. Those with a Staten Island resident carpool discount will be refunded for their leftover tickets and their discount will be applied electronically. Refund requests can be mailed to TBTA Staten Island Resident Carpool Ticket Refund, Revenue Management, 2 Broadway, 23rd Floor, New York, NY 10004.

Monetary donations can be mailed to the 123 Precinct Community Council, P.O. Box 120158, S.I., NY, 10312. Checks should be made payable to 123 Precinct Community Council (marked “2017 Back to School Backpack Program” in the memo). Suggested supplies include: backpacks (no wheels); #2 pencils; colored pencils; erasers; blue, black and red pens; highlighters; loose leaf notebook paper; liquid glue and glue sticks; pocket folders; composition notebooks; 24-count crayons; basic function calculators; washable markers; 1, 3, and 5-subject spiral notebooks; 3-ring binders; pencil boxes or bags; rulers; protractors; 3x5 index cards; lunch boxes; and child safety scissors. Fewer Testing Days for Students For parents and teachers who aren’t fans of State testing, here’s a step in the right direction. The Board of Regents recently announced that the number days students will spend taking the State assessments in English Language Arts and mathematics will be reduced from three to two. The change affects students in grades 3 to 8 and will take affect starting next spring in 2018. “The Regents and I continue to listen to the concerns of parents and teachers and to make additional adjustments to the grades 3-8 exams,” said State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia. “In response to those public concerns, last year we reduced the number of test questions and moved to untimed testing. Today’s decision is another important step in our efforts to deliver a rigorous testing regime that is responsive to the public’s concerns.”

everything you need to know about your community Too Good For Drugs We think every child in Staten Island is too good for drugs! This year’s Too Good For Drugs program culminated last month at New Dorp High School, in which Borough President James Oddo joined members of the NYPD to congratulate participants. The classroom program, which is co-taught by a teacher and NYPD officer, teaches children how to handle peer pressure, deal with outside influences, and make healthy decisions through interactive games and skits. The program, now in its third year, took place in every 5th grade class on Staten Island and was also piloted for 7th graders in four middle schools and for freshman at New Dorp High School. At the ceremony, BP Oddo and members of the NYPD spoke about the dangers of addiction and encouraged students to act as leaders in and out of the classroom. At the end of the ceremony, students took a pledge to abstain from tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. BP Oddo, added that he wants to see the program expand even further and told the graduates, “Through this program, you are going to be part of the solution. We need you. We can’t win this battle without you. We need your help in the pushback in the fight against addiction.”

BP Oddo joins members of the NYPD to congratulate students who participated in this year’s Too Good For Drugs program at New Dorp High School.

Free College Tuition

Congratulations, Wesley!

Is your college student eligible for free tuition? Under Governor Cuomo’s Excelsior Scholarship, he or she might be. The first-of-its-kind program will provide tuition-free college at New York’s public colleges and universities to families making up to $125,000 a year. The plan will be phased in over three years, beginning for New Yorkers making up to $100,000 annually in the fall of 2017, $110,000 in 2018, and $125,000 in 2019. The budget additionally includes $8 million to provide open educational resources, including e-books, to students at SUNY and CUNY colleges to help offset textbook costs. The deadline for scholarship applications is July 21, 2017. Link to an application form and more information at siparent.com.

The Michael J. Petrides Student Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science was given to Wesley Dai, a student at Staten Island Academy. The impressive student achieved the highest academic average of any student at his school in the past 10 years and got a perfect score of 2400 on his SAT. This year, he was selected as a candidate for the U.S. Department of Education’s prestigious Presidential Scholar’s Program. He was also named a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program and an AP Scholar with Honor. He serves as the president of his school’s Science Club and swims competitively. Wesley will be attending Yale in the fall. The annual Petrides award is given to a graduating high school senior who excels in math and science. Each Staten Island high school is asked to submit a single nominee, from which the honoree and runner-up are selected. Congratulations to Wesley and all of the nominees!

Teachers Get a Free Pass Teacher Appreciation Week is extended through the summer at the Staten Island Museum. They are once again offering a free pass to all teachers, administrators, and parent coordinators every day between June 15 and September 15. After over 300 education professionals signed up last year, the museum was excited to continue the offer this year. The pass is valid at either location (St. George and Snug Harbor); visitors just need to show their school ID, a paystub, or school letterhead to be granted free entry. Check out the S.I. Parent Family Calendar for information on the Staten Island Museum’s family-friendly events and programs.

Total Fitness Challenge Assemblyman Michael Cusick is challenging Staten Island students to keep their minds AND bodies fit this summer. The Total Fitness Challenge encourages children to read at least 30 minutes a day and perform as many physical activities as possible over the summer break. It is open to all students from kindergarten to eighth grade. The physical activities are assigned varying point values, which count toward each student’s total score. Kids will keep track of their efforts through a daily log that their parents must sign each day. A Total Fitness medal will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place top scorers from each grade among the island-wide entries. A trophy will be given to the school having the most points and participants in the challenge. Go to siparent.com to link to more information on the Total Fitness Challenge.

New Gyms for Local Schools Seven Staten Island schools will be receiving new designated gymnasiums as part of the Mayor’s Universal Physical Education initiative. Of the 200 schools within the five boroughs that are part of the program, the Staten Island schools that will be receiving new gyms are: PS 1 in Tottenville, PS 5 in Huguenot, PS 20 in Port Richmond, PS 38 in Midland Beach, PS 39 in Arrochar, PS 54 in Willowbrook; and PS 74 in Tompkinsville. Over the next several months, the DOE and the School Construction Authority (SCA) will work with individual schools to explore a variety of options at each school to ensure all students have access to space for PE. These options will include constructing new gymnasiums, renovating schoolyards, converting or enhancing existing rooms into fitness areas, converting auditoriums into “gymatoriums,” or leasing PE space from community-based organizations. “The lack of physical education classes in our schools has been a concern of mine for over 20 years,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “I could not be more proud to be dedicating resources to ensure that every school will have an adequate PE space by 2021. Incorporating physical activity into the day isn’t just the healthy thing for our young people, it is the law and one that was ignored for far too long.”

Drug Prevention Portal

If your child is entering eighth grade this fall, then now is the time to start thinking about it high school. The 2018 NYC High School Directory is currently available online at the Department of Education website, and it’s filled with important information for students preparing to enter High School in 2018. You’ll find High School Fair dates, admissions test dates, application deadlines, important websites, as well as guidelines for applying, methods of admission, programs offered, and much more. You can also link to the directory at siparent.com to get started helping your teen or tween apply to the high school of their choice.

Staten Island’s drug epidemic is a major concern for parents living on the Island, where overdose statistics are particularly alarming. Hopefully providing the right tools, information, and resources for people can help prevent deaths. The Drug Prevention Portal is a new website providing comprehensive data about overdose and addiction on Staten Island. It includes information on Naloxone saves, overdose deaths, Emergency Department visits and hospital admissions. It also provides resources for the families of those suffering from addiction, including contact information for treatment providers and information on where to get Naloxone kits. The website was developed by Staten Island Performing Provider System (SI PPS) in conjunction with the Borough President’s office. SI PPS which was formed by RUMC, SIUH and over 75 local partner organizations transforming healthcare in our borough. Go to siparent.com to link to the Drug Prevention Portal.

Fourth of July Travis Parade

Don’t miss the biggest 4th of July celebration on the Island! The annual Fourth of July Travis Parade is celebrating its 107th anniversary this month. It’s one of the oldest, continuously-held Independence Day parades in the country. This year’s Grand Marshal will be NYS Assemblyman Michael Cusick. The rain-or-shine ceremony kicks off noon at the reviewing stand at P.S. 26 at 4108 Victory Blvd, followed by the parade step-off from Showplace Entertainment Center at 141 East Service Road at 12:30pm. Charter School for Dyslexia Planned for Staten Island! Bridge Preparatory Charter School has been a vision championed by Borough President James Oddo and the working group he established, comprised of parents, teachers and experts in the field. Bringing this vision to reality began with selecting a leader who was well versed on the needs of our Staten Island community. Timothy Castaza, a Department of Education veteran, who was born and raised right here on Staten Island, is the right person to lead this effort. “For years, our community has been asking for options designed to meet the needs of children with dyslexia and other language-based disabilities. As someone born and raised here, as an educator and as an advocate for high quality options for children, I’m proud to be working alongside a talented team that shares my belief that all children have the ability to learn, be successful and deserve a high- quality educational option that meets their needs. Unfortunately, too often some of our most vulnerable students are lost in the traditional school structure and require a different approach in order to be successful. We are ready to be that option.” ~ Timothy Castanza Timeframe for opening and students served Castanza and Bridge Prep’s team anticipate submitting a full application for consideration to the Board of Regents this August. If approved, Bridge Prep will be open for the 2018-2019 school year serving approximately 36 students in grade 2 and 36 students in grade 3, adding a grade each year. One of the unique approaches will be significantly smaller class-sizes, with each class aiming to serve no more than 12 students. If authorized, Bridge Prep will be the first and only public charter school in New York State and one of a handful in the United States, designed to meet the needs of students with dyslexia and language-based learning difficulties. Bridge Prep’s historic opening on Staten Island would provide these students the opportunity to be educated in their own community. Although Bridge Prep will target and recruit students with dyslexia and other language based needs who are often underserved within the traditional school structure, the school’s multisensory literacy

and writing focused curriculum is designed to serve all students well, including students with other exceptionalities, and English Language Learners. Partnering with the community Grounded in the belief that there is no substitute for the hours a student will spend with an effective teacher, Bridge Prep’s “Center for Teacher Development” will provide staff with opportunities for professional development and practicum to assist in improving instructional outcomes for students. Bridge Prep hopes to offer professional development opportunities to teachers from across the Staten Island educational community, including the NYCDOE, in order to support any educator working with dyslexic students in our community. Castanza believes that a child’s academic, personal and social development all share equal weight. At Bridge Prep, students will have the ability to participate in a variety of extra-curricular clubs, sports and be exposed to a variety of other educational and extra-curricular programming from partners in our community. Part of this commitment means when students return home from school, they are able to be children, which includes having time to spend with friends and family, rather than being bogged down in hours of homework, often a stressor for the families. Bridge Prep has received the support of many groups in the community, notably, CEC 31 and The SI Federation of PTAs, along with all of Staten Island’s elected officials. Most importantly though, is the support the planning group is getting from parents and educators. Bridge Prep has received extensive feedback from members of the community and has incorporated several suggestions into the key design elements, including class size, grades served and instructional approaches. Here is a link to a NYS Education Department informational sheet on Bridge Prep. www.p12.nysed.gov/psc/startcharter/lois/bridgepreploi3217.pdf or link directly at siparent.com/mikereilly

plan for a successful summer It’s all about balance!

The 2016/17 school year has come and gone, and with its end begins the 71 days (that’s 2 months and 10 days) of glorious summer vacation! Yes, I did say glorious there, didn’t I? You might have to reevaluate that adjective by the time August rolls around, unless you do a little work now to plan out your kids’ summer days at home so that the days only feel carefree.

Successful Summer.indd 2

Hold a family meeting to make your plans together so everyone feels heard and included. You can have each person jot down ideas and ambitions, then you can discuss each one and formulate a plan to implement what is feasible with your schedule and finances. Take a look at Staten Island Parent’s Family Calendar and highlight what interests you and the kids. Events are updated and added daily online as well. Pull up siparent.com/events anytime you need an idea. You’re welcome! Summer doesn’t have to be a continuous playtime. Balance the time to incorporate what you feel needs to be done along with what you would like to do. You will be using this to teach your children that life is like that: a good balance of fun and responsibilities.

If a project you want to accomplish is too large for just one day; spread it out over a period of time so the kids are not overwhelmed. Tackle the Mountain of Paperwork.

Starting with the school backpacks and the endless piles of papers brought home, sort and discard what you don’t need. For artwork and craft projects, perhaps you don’t need to keep all the originals. Take photos, upload to a photo website and make an album as a keepsake for each school year. Plan a Garage/Yard Sale. Sort through toys, clothes, books, and any other items you and your children outgrew or no longer use. Don’t forget the garage and backyard. Get the kids motivated by offering to use the money

feature / summer fun you make from the sale for a special fun daycation. Once you have a good amount of items put aside, have the kids make signs to hang around the neighborhood. (Remember to take them down when the event is over.) Maximize Your Yard Sale • Early weekend mornings seem to be the best time to attract shoppers • Arrange items into categories to make browsing easier • Showcase the most enticing items closest to the street • Price reasonably and be open to negotiation • Music and light refreshments create an inviting atmosphere • Try “buy one, get one” instead of drastic markdowns Plan a Special ME Day for Each Child. Arrange babysitting for siblings and allow each child a special day of their own to spend with you. Choose an activity from their wish list and mark it on a calendar. Let them X out the days in a countdown. Keep it light and casual so conversation flows freely. Afterwards, they can draw pictures or write in a journal about your special day. The bonding that occurs when you have uninterrupted time with just one child is like banking gold. You’ll reap the benefits of a strong relationship when they are teens. If you have nieces and/or nephews, it’s fun to switch kids for a day! You’ll see them differently and learn so much more about them without your own kids around.

Out in the Yard. If the weather is nice, spend the day outdoors planting vegetables, flowers, herbs, or fruits and watch them grow all summer long. The kids will get a kick out of choosing what to plant, and it’ll give them more of an interest in eating the “fruits” of their labor. Pun intended! New Talents. What do they hope to accomplish in the upcoming year, five years, and by the time they are adults? Do this each year and save the interview. It’s fun to see how their focus changes and matures over time. If you have teens, this is good practice for college and job interviews they need to master in the future. The actual questions matter less than getting them to be comfortable answering on the spot. Keep Sharp. Schedule in regular reading time (indoors or outside) so that the required reading list isn’t causing stress the week before they go back to school. is your family using technology wisely? aap recommendations for devices in the home

Not long ago, a search engine company called ReportLinker surveyed 670 families with children under fifteen to better understand the relationship between American kids and their devices. The results are a snapshot of how technology has been integrated into American families. In many ways, parents are following recommendations from experts including the American Academy of Pediatrics. But in a few key areas, parents seem to be ignoring best practice and following the path of least resistance. To get an idea of where your family falls, answer the following questions and compare your family’s tech habits to those of other families as well as recommendations from AAP. How many screens do you have at home? When you count TV’s, computers, tablets, smartphones and game consoles, the average number of screens per family is 7.3. Most households own a TV (94%), and about half have a video game console. Just over three-quarters of the families had at least one smartphone in the household, and 62% of parents said their kids spent 3 to 5 hours a day using a smartphone. The average age when kids get their own phone is 13 ½ years old.

For computing, families are more likely to use laptops (78%) than desktops (63%). The researchers also noted that among families with kids under 10, tablets are very popular – 58% of children under 5 use them – and they may eventually rival television as the device of choice. Perhaps the most interesting statistic is about technology in bedrooms. The AAP recommends that bedrooms be device-free and children “avoid exposure to devices or screens for one hour before bedtime.” Despite that advice, about two-thirds of the families with five or more devices allow kids to have one in the bedroom and, not surprisingly, those kids are more likely to use devices before they sleep. How many hours per day do your kids interact with technology? Having more devices in the household also increased the amount of time kids spend with technology. Half of the parents said they limit “plug in” time to less than two hours a day, but that rule is more likely to be enforced in families that have fewer devices and keep them out of bedrooms. The AAP recently revised its guidelines to say that “parents must develop personalized media use plans” based on each child’s age,

6/21/17 10:40 AM

health, temperament, and developmental stage. They also point out that parents must be sure technology doesn’t squeeze out other healthy activities including sleep, physical play, and time away from media. When do your kids use technology? Over 80% of families said kids used devices during their spare time; only 6% allowed them to be used at mealtime. That’s consistent with the AAP recommendation that mealtimes be media-free. Is technology a positive or negative influence on your kids? Experts continue to argue about whether technology is changing childhood, but three-quarters of parents believe devices are good for kids. Half say technology creates more benefits than risks, and 25% believe being comfortable with technology is essential for kids in the 21st century. For the 25% who feel technology has a negative impact on children, 11% believe technology creates more harm than benefits and 14% feel that technology “ruins the essence of childhood.” What are the main disadvantages of using tech devices? Twenty percent of parents couldn’t think of any disadvantages. A third worried that technology kept children from more traditional childhood activities such as playing, going outside, or reading. Thirty-one percent were concerned that time with devices made kids more isolated and less social. Only 10% worried about kids being less creative, and 4% were concerned about increased aggression. To those concerns, AAP adds sleep disruption, the risk of obesity because of too much sedentary time, and problematic Internet use including online bullying. What are the main advantages? When asked about benefits of technology, parents were clear: 40% felt technology promotes cognitive development and school readiness. About a quarter agreed that technology expands a child’s horizons, and another quarter thought access to devices makes kids more savvy about using technology of all kinds. Only 7% admitted using tech gadgets to amuse kids so they could do something else. AAP guidelines also note the social benefits of devices, including the opportunity to interact with distant friends and family members.

Do your children manage their own tech time? Over half of parents (58%) believe their kids can manage their own time on electronic devices. Ironically, in the households where children use screens more than five hours a day, 43% of parents think kids are doing a perfectly good job of time management. On the other hand, if you sometimes find it difficult to manage screen time, you’re not alone. Forty-two percent of parents admitted they feel the same way. How often do you know what content your kids are watching? Even though parents vary a lot in how much access they give kids to technology, they agree with the AAP on one thing—it’s important to monitor what kids are consuming. Eighty-three percent say they keep an eye on what kids watch, and 71% claim to have activated parental controls. Of course, one survey isn’t definitive, but it does reveal places where parents are on the right track—and improvement is possible. In the end, every family has to devise a device policy that works for them. To help, the AAP offers an interactive tool called Create Your Family Media Plan. Find it by looking for Media Plan at healthychildren.org.

the middle school years A PARENT PREP TALK – EXPECT MEMORIES, NOT MAYHEM

Although the honeymoon period of elementary school is over and middle school comes with ample trials and tribulations for most kids, try not to expect the worst. Parents who welcome the challenges of middle school as opportunities for growth will be still be smiling by the time they attend the eighth grade graduation ceremony.

Middle School Years.indd 2

Expect your child to face and overcome hurdles in middle school. Middle school is supposed to be about making mistakes and bouncing back from disappointments. Kids who navigate turbulence with spunk will mature in middle school. Kids who struggle with self-awareness and assertiveness are going to need extra support to develop skills they will need in high school. Parents who expect everything to be hunky-dory all the time will likely be disappointed. Parents who think kids can figure everything out for themselves at this age with little adult supervision may want to wake up. This is middle school, the preparation for high school, which is the preparation for college, which is preparation for adulthood. Middle school will change them; whether or not it’s for the better is largely up to you, parents. Here is a list of some of the challenges middle school kids face and how tuned-in parents can help.

Expressing Individuality. During the summer, sit down with your child and make a list of words that describe who he is. Do this every year before heading back to school to remind your student that he has interests and he’s allowed to like whatever he chooses. This list will evolve over the years, and that’s great, too. Expanding Learning Abilities. Middle school is an opportunity to try new ways of learning. Kids will get to do science labs for the first time, peer edit each other’s writing, work on projects with partners or in groups. Talk to your kids about how they are adjusting to these new learning modes so you can help smooth the way. Dealing With Social Pressures. How much social pressure exists in middle school? Tons. So role up your sleeves, parents, and always be ready to trouble-shoot. The best advice takes your child’s personality into account and eschews going along with all the crowds all the

time. Middle school is a great time for kids to learn how to say, “You do things your way and I’ll do things mine.” Keeping Up With School Assignments & Project Deadlines. Kids tend to procrastinate. Some have trouble understanding that projects and papers must be worked on incrementally to be adequately prepared. A little bit of planning support goes a long way until dreamy tweens can get the hang of due dates. Navigating The Online World. Your child is carrying a phone, a camera, and a computer in her pocket. Giving kids too much responsibility too soon can lead to extra expenses and shaken confidence. So trust your instincts, parents. You will know when your child is ready to embrace the job of caring for a phone. Finding Healthy Tribes. Kids will be kids but no parent wants their child hanging out with a bunch of troublemakers. Your child’s peer group has a huge influence on his daily life. Teach your kids to choose friends wisely and to distance themselves from those who make consistently unhealthy choices. Communicating With Teachers And Coaches. You know how to do this, but now it’s time to let your child step up and converse with authority figures. You can encourage her, confirm it’s happening, and even follow up with adults to make sure your child isn’t blowing you smoke. But let her do it or she won’t learn how.

Confronting Bullies. Not avoiding bullies. Not hiding from bullies. Not doing whatever bullies want so they won’t pick on you. Confronting bullies means being able to stand up to someone being mean to your child whether his friends will back him up or not. Let your kids know you expect them to stand up for themselves and for others in need of assistance and watch them do it. Becoming A Positive Contributor. Everyone hates substitutes. No one likes the new math teacher. That kid is so weird. But guess what, kiddo? It doesn’t matter because you are expected to be kind and respectful to everyone at your school, including teachers and substitutes. Furthermore, you will actively contribute in your classes and make positive contributions to your school on an ongoing basis. Got it? Bouncing Back From Failure And Disappointments. Perhaps the toughest days in middle school are the not-making-the-cut days or the performing-poorly-on-the-test days or the getting-sent-to-the-principal days. How you respond to some twist on this trope is important. Kids need to process their feelings before they can bounce back and do the right thing. Be calm and patient as you help them figure it all out. Test-driving Romantic Relationships. Some kids will dive right into relationships in middle school. Others will stay on the sidelines so they can spectate and speculate. Others may not seem interested at all. This is the beginning of new types of friendships, so be sure to have lots of conversations with your child about the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships. Prioritizing Needs. Kids have needs and those needs matter even when life is hectic. Maybe your daughter needs a jog bra

Remembering To Rest. Taking nice long baths with soft music and candles. Pulling the black-out curtains for a three-hour afternoon nap. A six-episode, BBC Pride And Prejudice binge-watching sessions to recover from the sniffles. Growing kids need to unwind sometimes, but they may have trouble recognizing this. When this happens, give them a nudge in a decompressing direction. Shining Despite Speedbumps. Guess what, parents? Your kid is going to stumble, fall, and maybe even face-plant in middle school. But he will still have plenty of shining moments, where he is ecstatic and in his element. If your child isn’t having enough moments like these, call a family meeting, put your heads together, and look for new opportunities where he is more likely to succeed. What If Your Child Has A Wake-up Call? If your child has a wake-up call, try your best to stay calm. Never focus on what others will think. In fact, you may want to detach yourself from well-meaning friends for a time, as you address your child’s needs. A wake-up call is often a cry for help. Is your child getting as much attention and support as she needs? Sometimes a wake-up call is a by-product of the company your child keeps. Is your child getting mixed up with kids who thrive on acting out? If your child is in trouble at school, don’t make school professionals into enemies. Work with them to make sure your child has all the academic and creative outlets he needs. Kids who get in trouble at this age are often bored, under-supervised, and craving outlets. Keeping kids engaged, challenged, and in healthy routines can insure kids stay safe and productive throughout the middle school years. How Parents Can Help Kids Navigate Middle School Be there. Listen. Talk with them. Appreciate them. Relax with them. Encourage them. Set clear limits. Help them prioritize. Discuss expectations. Touch base daily.

Monitor online life. Notice what’s emerging. Keep them active. Ignore unhelpful people. Applaud progress. Address over-commitment. Tackle tough topics. Be approachable. Hug them often. Celebrate proud moments.

The District 75 school, serving students with a multitude of conditions who require services more available in a special setting, has at least five locations. Like a lot of other schools, the students put on theater productions and art shows. They go on trips and hold student dances. Unlike most schools, the main location in Great Kills has a vegetable farm. But two years ago, PS 37 unveiled a new program for its students, something unique to a District 75 school— a football team. Flag football, to be exact, for seventh- and eighth-graders who participate in PS 37’s social communication program. It’s been a champion of an idea. “Last year we decided to think outside the box, and we asked permission from our principal and together we came up with a

plan to connect with the community,” said Barbara Moran, one of the counselors in charge of the football program at PS 37. Assistant Principal Corey Regan had a son playing football at Monsignor Farrell HS, so she approached the folks at Farrell and the partnership was formed. Besides the flag football games between the PS 37 students, the schools were able to arrange a few trips to Farrell, in Oakwood, including to a game last September where the PS 37 students joined the Lions for the coin toss and also got to spend the game on the sidelines with the team. “It’s an exciting experience; it feels like you’re in a stadium,” Garafalo said. “It gives them something close to the game experience. The program was also a great education for our kids. They see challenges other people face, and how they overcome

obstacles. When you see the two groups working together and see the smiles on both sides, it’s a great thing.” Aside from experiencing everything that a high school athlete would, the students are also gaining knowledge in the process. “We increased [the students’] vocabulary by walking around and learning about the locker rooms, bleachers, scoreboard,” said Moran.

PS 37 also received help from A&M Printing and Design in Charleston, which donated jerseys and offered the bonus of job shadowing for the students where they were able to make their own jerseys during a class trip. “To allow special needs kids out of the building is a lot,” said Moran. “We really appreciate our principal and assistant principals’ support because without them this wouldn’t have been possible.” And not only are the students learning plenty through the experience, but are benefitting socially as well. “Being with kids their own age and communicating through [football] and even just throwing the ball back and forth is simulating a conversation,” said Moran. While Moran credits Tony Garofalo and Farrell’s principal, Monsignor Edmund Whalen, with being “a big part in making our students feel welcome,” it is the Farrell players who have also played a huge role to ensure that the PS 37 students are getting the most out of their relationship. In fact, some of the Farrell players set up pen pal emails to keep in touch with the PS 37 students.

“We really wanted it benefit both schools,” said Moran, who noted that the Farrell players benefit through the interaction with students their own age who struggle with simple everyday tasks. It encourages them not to take their own abilities for granted, she said. The staff at PS 37 believes that this program has exceeded expectations, Moran said, since when students returned for the program’s second year, they were familiar with their setting and enthusiastic to play the game of football. They were also enthusiastic with their awards luncheon, hosted by O’Neill’s Traditional Irish Pub in Graniteville. “This also gives parents a chance to celebrate their children,” said Moran. “They’re usually left out since children with autism aren’t in a lot of team sports.”

We are just so in love with watermelon! It’s flavorful, it’s healthy, it’s refreshing, it’s affordable, and most of all the kids can’t get enough of it! Here are some must-try watermelon recipes that will get you kudos from everyone at your next picnic.

flag kebob Ingredients

• Varying amount seedless watermelon, cut into 1” cubes • 1 package fresh, washed blackberries • 1 angel food cake, cut into 1” cubes (white part only) • 12 wooden skewers • Varying dips of your choice

Directions:

1. To create an American flag, thread 5 blackberries on 5 skewers, followed by alternating cake and watermelon cubes. 2. On the other skewers, alternate watermelon and cake, so that the first and last cubes are both watermelon. The fruit and cake will create stripes when lined properly with red strips at the top and bottom. 3. Optional: serve with red, white and blue yogurt dips or try chocolate, caramel or marshmallow for a super sweet tooth.

1. Wash and dry the watermelon. 2. Cut off 1/3 of the watermelon at a diagonal angle. 3. Stand the remaining 2/3 upright on your work surface and use a dry erase marker to draw the mouth line and eye sockets. 4. Cut out the mouth. Trim back a ½” line of the green part of the rind for the teeth area. 5. Use a large spoon to scoop out the watermelon flesh, leaving 3” intact at the base. 6. Cut out the teeth, using a smaller utility knife. Use melon baller to cut out the eye sockets that match the size of large marbles. Then use a paring knife to trim the green area around the eyes. Insert marbles. 7. Use the carved out rind from the mouth to make the dorsal fin, shape as shown in the picture. Attach the fin using toothpicks. 8. Fill the mouth with triangle shapes of watermelon, accented with Swedish fish.

show the pattern. Here are several examples: (1) It is school. It is not vacation. (2) It is good. It is not bad. (3) It is deer. It is not dog. (4) It is poor. It is not rich. (5) It is apple. It is not orange. If you can’t figure out the word pattern secret, see the answer on siparent.com/dearteacher. But don’t give up too easily. Some adults have taken hours to discover the secret.

This summer, we are again providing activities that are academic in nature for your children to do each week. We also have made them fun to do so your children will enjoy keeping their skills up-todate as well as learning new ones.

Picture Stories. A picture is said to be worth a thousand words. This week let your children stray away from traditional language arts activities to writing stories largely with pictures.

This summer’s activities are all in language arts, which includes reading, speaking, listening and vocabulary building. You can find even more activities in this area on our DearTeacher.com website under “Learning Activities,” as well as ones for math, social studies, reading and science.

The first writing was pictures drawn on cave walls. Let your children go back to those times and make up stories using as many pictures as they can. For example, “I love you” could be expressed with the picture of an eye followed by a heart and then the letter “U.”

An Intriguing Word Game. Here is an intriguing game that can challenge family members of all ages. Play it until everyone in the family knows the secret of choosing the right words to

When children first start to write, they often use some pictures for words they can’t spell out. The representation of a word or phrase by a picture is called a “rebus.” For fun or a challenge, have your

children go online and search for rebus stories. They will find ones for different age groups that will be fun to read. Older children can look for lists of emojis on their computers or cellphones. Then they can have fun writing messages to friends or family members using as many as emojis as they can.

Creative Storytelling Is Fun. So much emphasis is now being placed on developing children’s creativity. Here’s a storytelling activity that not only will increase your children’s language arts skills, it will also boost their creative-thinking skills. To prepare for this activity, have your children find 15 to 20 or more rather flat rocks that are approximately 2 inches by 2 inches in size or larger. Have them decorate the rocks on one or both sides as both characters and objects. They can use paints, marking pens, yarn, paper, stickers and so on to create the storytelling rocks. The rocks are then placed in a bag.

Liz Brandefine, Educational Director

To start the activity, one or more rocks are blindly selected from the bag, and a story is devised about these rock characters and objects. As the story goes on, more rocks can be drawn from the bag to embellish the story. If children find difficulty starting a story, you can give them a starter such as, “Once upon a time, a frog was living in a house with a large dog.”

Rhyming Words. Rhyming words are lots of fun. Read nursery rhymes to your young children, and you will be giving them a head start on phonics. Introduce older children to the poems of Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, and Bruce Lansky. They’ll discover what fun poetry can be. For example, they’ll find themselves laughing when they read a poem like “When Grandma Visits” in “A Bad Case of the Giggles,” a book of poems selected by Bruce Lansky. The poem starts: When Grandma visits you, my dears, be good as you can be. Don’t put hot waffles in her ears or beetles in her tea.

Handwriting Through the Ages. Summer vacation may be over or ending soon for your children. For their last language arts activity, have them experience different forms of handwriting that were used in the past. Have them try writing with a stylus on clay or Play Dough as the first writing was done. Next, they should discover what it was like in the Middle Ages when illuminators and painters often used very fine brushes and ink. Then your children can relive how students did their classroom work in the early 1800s using quills and ink. This will be messy! However, even today, quills are still being used by professional calligraphers. After the 1820s, metal pens were used with ink. You may not be able to find these pens. However, if you have old fountain pens, let your children experience writing with them. Then bring them up to today and have them write with markers.

rock your summer kindness rock painting Painting rocks is no longer a last-resort craft for bored kids. It’s a full-force kindness movement taking the entire nation by storm.

It’s the most rockin’ activity to share with your kids this summer!

60

The idea behind it is simple. Participants find rocks and paint them, sometimes leaving an inspirational quote or word on their rock art, then hide them somewhere in their hometown. When an unsuspecting person stumbles upon the rock, they are expected to hide it in a new spot and paint a rock of their own to contribute to the project. The ultimate goal is to brighten someone’s day with their find, a small token of kindness meant to be paid forward. And apparently a little act of kindness goes a long way. Literally thousands of rock-painting groups have begun popping up across the country and even internationally in the past few months. Here in Staten Island, a Facebook group called Staten Island Rocks! was formed in April by local mom Alicia Marshall after her daughter came across a video about rock painting and begged her mom to start a new movement on the Island. The group encourages members to take a picture when they find a rock and post it to the group page, then hide it in a new spot.’

Rock Painting.indd 2

Marshall is anxious to see kindness rock painting take off in Staten Island this summer the way it has in

neighboring boroughs. “I’m a teacher and I really value my summers with my kids,” she told Staten Island Parent. “I hope that this will inspire other families to get out, get creative, and start spending more quality time outside and away from the screen with each other.” A Massachusetts life coach is credited with the very first kindness rock. Megan Murphy started the Kindness Rock Project after marking a few inspirational quotes on rocks at the beach, leaving them for others to find. On her website, thekindnessrocksproject.com, you’ll find tips for painting the perfect rocks as well as some suggestions for inspiring quotes to add to the rocks. The Kindness Rock Project website also strongly urges rock-painters to be very mindful and respectful of the environment and their community, never dropping Ready to rocks in national start painting parks or private and hiding rocks property and with your family? Visit always using siparent.com/rockpainting non-toxic to link to the paint or spray. Staten Island Rocks! Facebook group and join the movement today.

keep your home safe tips on protecting your home while you are away

Taking precautions when you are away will ensure there are no unwanted surprises when you return home from vacation. Put your mind at ease by heeding summer fire prevention tips to be sure there are no mishaps with your air conditioners.

When it’s time for summer vacation, make sure your home is safe so you can relax and enjoy your time away. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: • Let your security company know that you will be away. • Give a trusted neighbor a house key and alarm code and have them go in and out a few times so it appears people are home (be sure to provide this person’s contact information to the alarm company and police, if you are notifying them). Also let your neighbor know where your circuit panel is in the event of a power outage. • Have exterior and interior lights on timers.

• Do NOT post updates on social media that you’re on vacation or pictures of you on the beach in the Bahamas. • To prevent a fire unplug or disconnect the dryer and shut the water valve off to the washing machine to prevent a flood. Every year there are approximately 15,500 dryer fires which cause tremendous property damage. • Don’t close your blinds – keep your house looking as usual. • Stop the mail and newspaper delivery. • Unplug your television, computer, and other appliances to protect them from power surges.

• Do not leave a spare key hiding outside. • Frost or cover your garage windows, burglars won’t be able to tell if your car is gone. • Unplug the power to the automatic garage door to eliminate the ability to open with a universal remote. Summer Fire Prevention Tips Everyone Needs to Know
When the temperature rises the air conditioners go on. But if you have a window air conditioner, be careful that you’re using it properly to avoid a potential fire. An estimated 2,300 residential air conditioning fires start each year. In order to prevent a fire caused by a window air conditioner, here are some important tips: • Plug the air conditioner directly into the wall, not through an extension cord. Using an extension cord can overload the outlet. Additionally, extensions cords can fray or overheat if they are run under carpeting. • Avoid plugging an air conditioner into the same outlet or circuit as other high-wattage appliances, such as refrigerators, ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, and irons. When plugged into an outlet with too many lights or other appliances, air conditioners can overload and overheat the circuit, melting and igniting the wire insulation. • Always make sure the unit is plugged into a three-prong outlet, and make sure the wiring in your house can handle the electricity used by the unit. • Don’t wait to turn on the air conditioner until it’s unbearably hot. Extremely high temperatures will cause the air conditioner not to run properly as the unit can’t bring the temperature down sufficiently and the compressor will continue to cycle rather than shut off. This will cause heat to build up and eventually that causes the cord to burn out and a fire to start. • If you’re using an oscillating fan or window fan, the issues are similar – using an extension cord presents a serious fire hazard. Plug your fan directly into an outlet and be sure the cord is not running under a carpet or rug. Sadly many of these fires ignite rapidly with very little warning, so reduce the risk of a fire starting by heeding this advice.
