At every stage of development, parents face new challenges, and the elementary school years are no different. During this exciting period of growing independence, that, as well as added responsibilities and increased social interaction will bring new issues parents must contend with. Here are some tips to help you through this adventuresome but trying stage.

1. Tattletales. Does your child tattle every time a sibling or playmate breaks a rule? Sometimes they just don’t know the difference between tattling and telling. Other times, kids are looking to get another child into trouble. Explain to your child the difference. Tattling is when another child breaks a rule (or maybe there is no rule), and the action your child is tattling about is relatively harmless. Telling, on the other hand, is when another child is doing something that could cause harm to oneself or others. Make a rule that you don’t want to hear any tattling, but that telling is okay and even necessary. 2. Lying. Every child tells a lie at some point or another. In fact, most adults are guilty of occasional white lies. Still, teaching kids to tell the truth is vital to them developing into trustworthy adults and forming intimate relationships. Talk to your child about how lying diminishes yours and others’ ability to trust your child and can impact your child’s relationships. Then, if you catch your child in a lie, remind your child, and explain how your child’s future freedom and privileges will depend on how well you can trust your child. Also, to build your child’s trust in you, so your child will

be comfortable being honest, practice being open and nonjudgmental. It will go a long way toward your child’s willingness to be open with you. 3. Media overload. With the overwhelming variety of media available to kids, it’s difficult to know where to draw the line. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that kids be limited to no more than two hours of entertainment-based screen time per day. Invite your child to help you establish rules about media use. Consider the various forms of media including tv, video games, computer, and cell phone. Establish a total number of hours per day your child can use media. Then ask your child to help you break down how much of that time can be spent on specific forms of media. Also, discuss the measures you’ll take if the rules are violated. 4. Chore wars. As your child grows, so should your child’s responsibilities. In the elementary years, children can pick up their rooms, set and clear off the table, dust, sort their laundry, fold and put away their clean clothes, bring in the mail, rake leaves, and many other simple tasks. During the early elementary years, choose a small number of simple chores. As they grow, increase the

5. Homework This is a routine challenge for so many parents, so it’s best to set up rules and guidelines early on. Involving your child in the decision making can increase cooperation. One option might be to give your child 30 minutes of free time or media time after school before beginning homework. Another option could be to do chores and free time right after school, but homework will start immediately following dinner. Avoid saving homework for late in the evening though. It’s important to agree on consequences if the rules are not followed, so they are clear about what to expect. Also, choose a distraction-free location to be used for homework. Then require your child put their phone on the charger (away from the homework area) while working on homework. 6. Name calling and teasing. Sometimes when kids call each other names, they’re just playing. If two kids are going back and forth at each other, both laughing and having a good time, it probably isn’t a big deal. As long as it’s just play, balanced, and no one’s feelings are getting hurt, you can just let it go. On the other hand, if it’s one-sided, mean-spirited, or the child on the receiving end seems angry, upset, scared, or hurt by it, it’s usually best to intervene. First, try to empower the child being teased, and encourage the child to tell the other one to stop. If necessary, take a more direct approach, and make it clear to the child doing the teasing how hurtful the behavior is and that it isn’t acceptable. 7. The birds and the bees. The question of where do babies come from and discussions of puberty can leave even the most open-minded parents fumbling for words, so it’s best to prepare in advance for the inevitable discussions. That way you’ll be able to answer questions in the best way possible and without showing discomfort. Your comfort is essential to making your child feel at ease and will lead to your child being more open with you as your child matures. To get started, during the early elementary years, read to your child Where Did I Come From? or another age-appropriate book. Such books help take the guesswork out of what and how to say it to your child. By the later elementary years, discussions of puberty and sex should be more complete. Some children reach puberty by the age of 10, so you want your child to be fully prepared for the changes that’ll take place. You also want to make sure your child is accurately informed about sex since by late elementary some kids are already talking about it among each other and are often filled with misinformation. 8. Defiance. As kids grow, they become more independent – and with independence comes defiance. For dealing with defiance, lay out the ground rules ahead of time, so both you and your child will know the consequences for such behavior. When your child is defiant, keep the following in mind. First, consistency is crucial to being effective. Second, don’t argue. If your child tries to debate you after you’ve already discussed and stated your position on the issue, calmly say you’ve already made up your mind, and you’re not going to discuss it any further. These days, eyeglasses can look pretty cool. Still, the day may come when your son or daughter asks you for contact lenses. Kids and contact lenses, however, are not always the best fit.

Contact lenses can have benefits, says Bernard P. Lepri, O.D., M.S., M.Ed., an FDA optometrist in the agency’s Contact Lens and Retinal Devices Branch. “They can be better for sports activities, because they don’t break as frames and the lenses of glasses can. And they provide better peripheral vision for sports, or driving, if your teen is of driving age,” Lepri explains. Moreover, in some cases, contact lenses improve the quality of vision in comparison to eyeglasses, especially when a child is very nearsighted, says Lepri. “On the other hand, you have to remember that contact lenses are medical devices (regulated by the FDA), not cosmetics,” Lepri says. “Like any medical device, contact lenses should be used only if they can be used safely and responsibly. And only under the supervision of your eye care professional.” Serious injury to the eye can result, particularly if the contact lenses are not removed at the first hint of a problem. “Eye care professionals typically don’t recommend contacts for kids until they are 12 or 13, because the risks are often greater than the benefits for younger children,” Lepri says. ”But age isn’t the only issue. It’s also a question of maturity.”

Lepri suggests that parents who are considering contacts for their kids take a look at how well they handle other responsibilities, especially personal hygiene. “It takes vigilance on the part of the parents,” he says. “You need to constantly be looking over your child’s shoulder to make sure they are properly caring for their lenses.“ As many an eye care professional can attest, kids find all sorts of ways to be less than hygienic. Common, dangerous behaviors include wearing another child’s lens; using saliva to moisten a lens; and wearing decorative lenses purchased from flea markets, beauty supply stores, the Internet and other sources. These behaviors can result in injury. The problems from contact lenses include infections and eye abrasions—meaning that your eye can be bruised from contact lenses. The reasons? Hygiene and responsibility. Or rather, Lepri says, the lack thereof. He adds that it’s essential for all people who wear contact lenses to follow their eye care professional’s advice “to the letter.” That means observing all hygienic precautions. Even lenses without corrective power, such as

feature / save your vision month decorative or so-called “colored” or “costume” contact lenses, are still medical devices and have all the risks other contact lenses do, says Lepri. “Never buy decorative/costume contact lenses without a prescription from your eye doctor,” Lepri adds. And never buy contact lenses from any supplier that does not require a valid prescription. (Again, even zero-powered contact lenses require a prescription for correct and safe fitting.) If considering contact lenses, your child should be able to follow the following safety tips. • Always wash your hands before cleaning or inserting lenses, and carefully dry your hands with a clean, lint-free cloth. • Rub, rinse, clean and disinfect your contact lenses as directed and only with the products and solutions recommended by your eye care professional. • Never expose your contact lenses to any kind of water or saliva. • Do not wear your lenses for longer than the prescribed wearing schedule. This means that you should not sleep in lenses that were not prescribed to be worn this way. • Never wear someone else’s lenses. • Always have a prescription for any lenses you wear. • When playing sports, wear safety goggles or glasses over lenses. • In general, always have a pair of back-up glasses handy. • Never put a contact lens into an eye that is red. • Don’t ignore eye itching, burning, irritation or redness that could signal potentially dangerous infection. Remove the lenses and contact your eye care professional. Apply cosmetics after inserting lenses, and remove your lenses before removing makeup.

Eye care professionals generally do not recommend extended wear lenses for kids and teens because they can increase the incidence of corneal ulcers, which can lead to permanent loss of vision. Although they are a bit more expensive, daily disposable lenses can reduce some of the risks since the wearer is using a new pair of lenses every day. In addition, children with seasonal allergies are usually not good candidates for wearing contact lenses. The lenses may only increase the itching and burning caused by their allergies. You can talk with your child about the risks and responsibilities of wearing contact lenses and whether she or he is able to handle these responsibilities. Qualified youths, ages 14-24, will be placed in paid, entry-level summer job programs for six weeks throughout July and August. SYEP also provides workshops on job readiness, career exploration, financial literacy, and opportunities to continue education and social growth. The programs are located in community-based organizations in all five boroughs of New York City. CareerCon 2018 On Monday, February 26, hundreds of Staten Island high school students gathered at CareerCon 2018 in preparation of their possible future career paths. The event was hosted by the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce and took place at Saint John’s University. Industry professionals from over 85 businesses and organizations offered their expertise, and some offered internships and part-time positions as well. Students from every public high school on the island were in attendance.

a home of its own. SIYSL Vice President and Field Committee Chairperson recently announced SIYSL will build its fields on almost 10 acres in the area of Oakwood Beach. Depending on the size of the fields, SIYSL President Bill Smith is hoping to have room for three full-size fields and possibly two small-sided natural-grass fields. More than 5,200 players currently play in the SIYSL. “We’ve been working on this with Senator Lanza for more than a year as well as the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery,” said Libertelli. “The state wanted to give the land to the city, but someone told the state about the Staten Island Youth Soccer League and that we have no official home and when they found out we were a non-forprofit organization, they thought it would be a good idea to see if we can work something out. Having our own fields helps us with scheduling and not waiting for other fields to open up for the season.”

Michael’s Cause

SI Teens Combat Tobacco Use Local youth from Reality Check of Tobacco Free Staten Island, housed at the Jewish Community Center, recently visited Albany with one message for lawmakers: Tobacco Control Saves Lives and Money. Staten Island teens spoke to several politicians about the toll of tobacco in Staten Island and what they are doing to create changes within their community. The group focused on new data showing that, while adult smoking rates are dropping, New Yorkers with a mental illness, with low level of education, and those earning less than $15,000 per year are much more likely to smoke. The group also focused on e-cigarette use in young people. While youth smoking rates have significantly declined, electronic cigarette use among the state’s middle and high schoolers has doubled from 2014-2016, and studies show e-cigarettes can be a precursor to cigarette smoking in youth, even those who were not likely to smoke cigarettes. “I see classmates using electronic cigarettes much more frequently than regular cigarettes.” said Christopher Becker, Reality Check participant. “As a Reality Check youth this is alarming as my peers don’t realize that using these products are harmful.”

We all know that children learn and develop at their own pace, and reading is no different from other skill building. It’s common for kids to find reading challenging at one point or another, but if learning to read becomes an ongoing struggle that leaves a child falling behind his peers, dyslexia may be the culprit.

What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is most commonly associated with trouble learning to read. It affects a child’s ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds in language. Kids with dyslexia have a hard time decoding new words, or breaking them down into manageable chunks they can then sound out. This causes difficulty with reading, writing and spelling. They may compensate by memorizing words, but they’ll have trouble recognizing new words and may be slow in retrieving even familiar ones. Dyslexia is not a reflection of a child’s intelligence — in fact it’s defined as a gap between a student’s ability and achievement. Some youngsters with dyslexia are able to keep up with their peers with extra effort at least for the first few grades. But by the third grade or so, when they need to be able to read quickly and fluently in order to keep up with their work, they run into trouble. With help and strategies for compensating for their weakness in decoding, students with dyslexia can learn to read and thrive academically. But dyslexia is not something one outgrows.

Signs of dyslexia A young person with dyslexia may: • Struggle with learning even simple rhymes • Have a speech delay • Have trouble following directions • Repeat or omit short words such as and, the, but • Find it difficult to tell left from right In school, children with dyslexia are likely to: • Have difficulty sounding out new words • Lack fluency compared to other children their age • Reverse letters and numbers when reading (read saw as was, for example) • Find it difficult to take notes and copy down words from the board • Struggle with rhyming, associating sounds with letters, and sequencing and ordering sounds • Stumble and have difficulty spelling even common words; frequently they will spell them phonetically (hrbr instead of harbor) • Avoid being called on to read out loud in front of classmates • Become tired or frustrated from reading

Dyslexia affects children outside of school as well. Kids with dyslexia may also: • Find it difficult to decode logos and signs • Struggle when trying to learn the rules to games • Have difficulty keeping track of multi-step directions • Struggle with getting the hang of telling time • Find it especially challenging to learn another language • Become incredibly frustrated, which can effect their mood and emotional stability Social and emotional impacts of dyslexia Dyslexia can also impact a child socially. Kids with dyslexia — particularly those who have yet to be diagnosed — often suffer from low self-esteem because they worry that there is something wrong with them, and are often accused of not trying hard enough to learn to read. How is dyslexia diagnosed? If your child isn’t meeting expectations for reading, you can ask the school district to perform an evaluation and share the results with you. The evaluation will test your child’s intellectual capacity and reading skills, to see if there is an achievement gap. It should also rule out other potential causes like environmental factors or hearing impairment. If you are unhappy with the quality of the evaluation, you can also secure a private evaluation by a psychologist, a neuropsychologist, a reading specialist, a speech and language therapist, an educational evaluator or a school psychologist. This external evaluation can also be used to advocate for your child and get the accommodations and services she might need. When should a child be evaluated? Dyslexia can begin to reveal itself at a young age, and there are preschool evaluations that look at the child’s awareness of the sounds that make up words, and ability at word retrieval, thus making early intervention possible. Others however, like Dr. Matthew Cruger, director of the Learning and Development Center at the Child Mind Institute, suggest waiting until kids are at least six years old and have had some formal instruction in reading to seek out a formal evaluation. How to help kids with dyslexia A dyslexia diagnosis does not mean your child will never learn to read. Dr. Cruger points out that there are a number of reading programs and strategies that can help, and cautions that sometimes traditional tutoring may actually be counter-productive for a child with dyslexia, particularly if it is not a positive experience. Instead, Dr. Cruger emphasizes that one of the most important ways to help kids with dyslexia is to make them more comfortable reading and by celebrating small victories and accomplishments, while focusing less on correcting their errors. Dyslexia can result in frustration, embarrassment, avoidance and low self-esteem as a result of difficulties performing tasks that seem to come naturally to others. Demystifying the learning disorder with your child can help him develop the tools and resilience necessary to manage it. One of the best ways to support a child with dyslexia — or any child who is struggling — is to encourage activities that she likes and feels good at, whether it is music, joining a sports team, or anything else that helps build her confidence. Securing our Schools The recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida was horrific and a terrible tragedy that has happened far too frequently.

Are we doing enough to secure our New York City Schools?

NYC DOE has adopted some of CEC 31’s proposals by agreeing and moving forward with updating the Public Address systems in schools that have defective or outdated systems.

Community Education Council 31 has been advocating for several enhancements since December 2012. Unfortunately, both former Mayor Bloomberg and current Mayor de Blasio refuse to implement the security measures CEC 31 proposed, even though the New York State Legislature and Governor Cuomo passed laws based on the plan. Several municipalities across New York State and the country have incorporated CEC 31 plan. In addition, Community Education Council 31 has also continually advocated for City Hall and Tweed to incorporate metal detectors into school security plans. All other NYC Government buildings have metal detectors and armed security, including Tweed, the New York City Department of Education’s central office, as well as City Hall and each Borough Hall. Community Education Council 31’s Comprehensive Safety and Security Proposal was passed in 2013 and submitted to the DOE, the state legislature and the New York City Police Department. The proposal suggested several security enhancements for NYC school buildings: • Locking ALL doors, including the main entrance, • Installing buzzer entries and video-capture technology on the main entrances to school buildings, • Improving School Building Response Team training, • Updating School Building Public Address systems (Resolution submitted in 2011) and,

In 2011, CEC 31 identified 35 schools with defective Public Address systems – that is approximately half of the schools in District 31. During this year’s survey, CEC 31 submitted requests for the seven remaining schools that need Public Address system upgrades. The DOE has also increased Building Response Team training. Although we are grateful for the DOE’s partnering with us to get every Public Address system working properly and increasing Emergency Response Training, we are disappointed that the Mayor and Chancellor have been reluctant to lock ALL doors and install buzzer entry systems with photo capture camera technology at the main entrance of every school. The DOE, to this point, has also turned away from the opportunity to utilize the resources of a select number of retired police officers that could add a valuable layer to school security. This can be a proactive measure to deter and minimize a potential threat like an active shooter. The DOE should create a pilot program employing retired police officers, who will perform duties associated with protecting the students and staff from a possible threat from a person with a weapon. The retired officers would NOT be part of general student discipline procedures. These special patrol officers would only be utilized to monitor access to school buildings and deter violent threats. The city can install signs on school buildings that advise the presence of an armed special patrol officer.

I believe the New York City Department of Education needs to be proactive and implement these safety measures to help secure all NYC Schools.

In 2014, the NYS Legislature and Governor Cuomo included the CEC 31 plan into laws. They created grant funding for schools to improve safety, which included cameras and buzzer entry systems.

The laws also expanded professional development opportunities focused on safety and security, mandating more training drills for Building Response Teams.

Jeff Stoutland left Staten Island long ago. But whenever he’s in the area, he tries to swing through his former hometown. “I’ll go over the Goethals Bridge and try to stop at Denino’s Pizza from my old stomping grounds in Port Richmond,” he said. “Not too long ago I drove past my old house in Westerleigh and saw a couple of neighbors who are still there. They were kind of shocked to see me.” If any have followed his 33-year football coaching career, however, it’s doubtful they were shocked to see him on TV on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 4, walking the sideline of the Philadelphia Eagles. Nor would they be shocked that, as the Eagles’ offensive line coach, he helped guide the team to a stunning 41-33 victory over the defending champion New England Patriots. The seeds of Stoutland’s coaching career were sown on Staten Island, when he first put on

football pads as a freshman at Port Richmond High School. “I think it was my freshman year that they elevated me to the varsity in mid-season,” Stoutland told SI Parent during the Super Bowl press availability the week before the game in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “I really just fell in love with football.” Truth be told, his first love was baseball. His dad, Jerry Stoutland, had played minor league baseball in the Yankee organization, and Jeff started out playing in the Westerleigh Little Guys league before moving on to Mid-Island Babe Ruth as a teen and American Legion ball during and after high school. “Even when I went to college,” he said, “I played on the baseball team my junior or senior year, so I played two sports. I really loved baseball and wanted to continue to play.” He excelled in football, however. And after a terrific high school career, he moved on to Southern Connecticut State, a Division II

program where he was a three-year starter at inside linebacker, earned Little All-American honors as a senior when he also served as a team captain. Stoutland went on to build an impressive resume as an assistant college coach. There were stints at Michigan State, Syracuse, the University of Miami and, finally, at the University of Alabama, where he helped guide the Crimson Tide to national championships in 2012 and 2013.

“When I was done with my college career, I knew that I wanted to be a college football coach,” he said. “And I learned from some great coaches. I kept pushing to elevate myself, and here I am now coaching with the Philadelphia Eagles.”

When he got the offer to coach the Eagles in 2013, “it was a no-brainer,” Stoutland said. “My dad is getting older and lives about an hour up the road, and I wanted to be around him as much as I could. He doesn’t like to travel too much, so being at Miami, Michigan State and Alabama really was not easy for me to get back and see him. That I could coach in the NFL, the highest level there is, and be so close to my dad was very important to me and has been fantastic.”

No matter how far he goes in the game, however, Stoutland said he’ll always remember where he came from. “I’m very proud of being from Staten Island, and from Westerleigh,” he said. “If I didn’t have the experiences I had growing up, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.” And the person he is today is a Super Bowl champion.

“It was just a matter of managing your time because there are a lot of media events, but as far as preparation we do the same thing as we do during the season,” Stoutland said. “We do the same schedule, we evaluate the film the same way, we practice with the players the same way, we have meetings with the players the same way, so it’s always extremely thorough. It doesn’t matter what game it is.”

“When my son did play football in Florida I missed practices and a lot of the games because I was working all the time,” Stoutland said. “It’s really a hard thing for coaches. It’s sad because many times we miss our own children’s events. For me that happened quite a bit. I’m not happy to say that, but it is what it is.”

If there has been a drawback to the coaching profession, he said, it’s that his workload often caused him to miss many of his own children’s activities when they were growing up. ummer camp season is just around the corner. According to the American Camp Association, each year more than 14 million children and adults in the United States attend camp, where they will learn new skills or master ones they already have. Attending a summer camp assures parents that their children will be spending valuable leisure time being activeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;something that has become more and more of a challenge in this generation. They will also establish lasting friendships while enjoying a healthy, active and productive summer. America is home to more than 14,000 day and resident camps (8,400 are overnight camps and 5,600 are day camps). There are camps themed around just about any interest, including sports, music, religion and many academic subjects. Many people put off summer camp planning until it is too late. Parents should keep in mind that camps begin registration early in the year and have specific cut-off dates for enrollment. Parents who want to beat the crowds this year can use this guide to help plan a summer camp agenda.

Take the time to visit prospective camps for a tour, and use this open house as an opportunity to learn more about the programs offered. If available, find a camp employee to discuss your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eligibility for enrollment. Some camps may offer webinars for convenience.

Each camp has their own requirements for registration. Expect to submit some personal information, including a medical background and proof of insurance, names and numbers of emergency contacts, and any other pertinent information as it applies to the camper. This may include allergies, fears, physical or mental disabilities, or even preferences in camp courses.

Summer camps vary in price. The ACA says camp costs range from $100 to more than $1,500 per week. However, many accredited camps offer some sort of financial assistance for children from families with limited financial means. If cost is a factor, be sure to broach the subject.

Summer camp activities may be rigorous, and campers may need to be cleared by a physician before starting. Be sure to schedule your child a physical checkup and bring along any pertinent forms. Children also can increase their levels of physical activity compared to the often-sedentary nature of winter. Such preparation can prevent injuries when engaging in outdoor and physical activities.

Camps are likely to provide a list of requirements with regard to clothing and equipment campers will need. If your child will be attending sleepaway camp, find out how often laundry is done so you can make sure they have enough clothing and swimsuits to last between laundry days. Shop for sneakers and other camp necessities so they are comfortable with their belongings before they leave.

Keep children in the loop Engage children in the planning process to help alleviate their fears and get them excited about summer camp. Review the campâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s list of activities and itinerary to prepare them for the pace of the day. If there is a choice in activities, discuss preferences with your child. stuffed waffle pizza Ingredients

• 1 recipe pizza dough • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese, sliced • Sliced pepperoni, cut into quarters • Marinara sauce for dipping

Directions:

1. Preheat your waffle iron. Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into equal sized squares, about 3″ x 3″ but it doesn’t have to be exact. 2. Lay the sliced mozzarella in the center of the dough, being generous with the cheese because some will leak out. Add the pepperoni, then top with another square of pizza dough. 3. Place on the waffle iron and close the lid, pressing down firmly but do not lock the lid. The lid will raise slightly while the dough cooks, but that is fine. chocolate chili Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons coconut oil • 2 medium onions, diced (about 2 cups) • 4 cloves garlic, minced (about 4 teaspoons) • 2 pounds ground beef • 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves • 2 tablespoons chili powder • 2 tablespoons ground cumin • 1 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa • 1 teaspoon ground allspice • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste • 1 can (14.5 ounces) fire-roasted, chopped tomatoes • 2 cups chicken or beef broth • 1 cup water

Directions:

1. Heat a large, deep pot over medium-high heat, then add the coconut oil. When the oil is melted, add onions, stir with a wooden spoon and cook until they’re translucent, about 7 minutes. Add the garlic and as soon as it’s fragrant, about 30 seconds, crumble the ground meat into the pan with your hands, mixing with the wooden spoon to combine. Continue to cook the meat, stirring often, until it’s no longer pink. 2. In a small bowl, crush the oregano between your palms to release its flavor, then add the chili powder, cumin, cocoa, allspice, and salt. Combine with a fork, then add to the pot, stirring like you mean it. Add tomato paste and stir until combined, about 2 minutes.

mustard-baked chicken with a pretzel crust Ingredients

• 1/2 pound hard pretzels, coarsely crushed (4 cups) • 1/2 cup canola oil • 1/2 cup whole-grain mustard • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard • 1/4 cup water • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 6 large skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400°. In a food processor, pulse the pretzels until coarsely ground; you should have coarse chunks and fine crumbs. Transfer to a large, shallow bowl. 2. Wipe out the food processor. Add the oil, whole-grain and Dijon mustards, water and vinegar and process until smooth. Season the dressing with salt and pepper. 3. Pour half of the dressing into a large shallow bowl, add the chicken breasts and turn to coat. Dredge the chicken in the pretzel crumbs and transfer to a rack set over a rimmed baking sheet. Bake in the upper third of the oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until cooked through. Slice the chicken and serve warm or at room temperature with the remaining mustard dressing.

Answer: IQ tests have limitations, but they can be helpful in predicting how kids will do in various educational settings. Once thought to be fairly constant, it is now accepted that scores can increase or decrease depending on how a kid is doing in school. Some educators feel that if you are IQ testing young children, especially for identifying giftedness, that one single IQ test would not be reliable. Instead, young children need to be assessed over time. In the same way that IQ tests may identify students who are gifted, they can also identify students who are at risk so helpful interventions can be started earlier. IQ testing is always a controversial subject. On one hand, parents want their children to be challenged and be given the best possible education, thus school officials are often under tremendous pressure to give these tests.

Question: The teacher just told me our third-grader could be retained because she is reading below grade level. The teacher says she will need better reading skills next year in order to handle subjects like social studies and science, where she will be reading to learn. Will retention help her? -- Solution Needed Answer: Starting in 2004, only two states -- Florida and Ohio -- used third-grade reading level as the gatekeeper to promotion. Today, 16 states and the District of Columbia are now requiring schools to retain students who are not reading on grade level by the third grade. It is hard to say if retaining your child in third grade next year will truly make any difference in her reading level. What has caused her to read below grade level? Was there a problem in first or second grade? Can she use phonics and context to decode words?

Before deciding on retention (if you have this choice), you definitely need to ask the school district to test your child so you are able to find out if she has any learning problems that can be addressed now, this summer and next year in fourth grade. Without the testing information and ruling out specific learning problems, no help to improve her reading skills will be effective. If the school district is not willing to do the testing, you need to see if the local university does testing in their educational psychology department, because outside testing agencies may cost several hundred dollars. Whether the outcome is retention in third grade or off to fourth grade, you want to get her reading issues addressed as soon as possible with help at school and/or private tutoring. You can do your part in this by making a commitment to read to and with her every evening. The more she reads, the better a reader she hopefully will become. Practice, practice, practice and more practice should be your mantra. It would also be helpful to visit our Dear Teacher website, DearTeacher.com, and use “Find your child’s reading level” on the home page. This will give you a quick idea of your child’s reading level. Plus, we have material showing how parents can help their poor readers at home to become better readers in the Skill Builders section.

Question: During spring break our family is taking a driving vacation. One of our stops is a living history museum where the children can see how people in this country lived 100 years ago. How can we make this visit as educational as possible? -- Learning about History Answer: Awaken their enthusiasm about the visit by getting informational brochures about the museum. Looking at the museum’s website should also boost your children’s interest in this visit. It is also important that your children understand that they will be seeing real people in period costumes doing the work of blacksmiths, shoemakers, quilters, farmers, school marms and others. Explain that they can ask questions of these “characters.” Once they are at the museum, encourage them to use their cameras to make a “modern day” record of history and to make videos. They may be able to use their pictures for reports when they return to school.

Question: Are there any secrets to having a good relationship with my children’s teachers? I want to stay on their good sides. – Friendly Answer: It goes without saying that you should be considerate in all your dealings with their teachers. This means that you make an appointment to talk with them. You should not try to corner them before or after to school, in the classroom or at school events to talk about your children. If there is an urgent matter to discuss, sending a note to school or using email is a good way to contact the teacher. If you can volunteer in a classroom, it is a good way to not only help teachers but to let them see your interest in your children’s education. And when a teacher goes out of his or her way to help your child, be sure to say, “Thank you.”
