But it’s not always a “walk in the park” for some moms. This month, Jeannine Cintron reveals what those moms are really thinking at the playground. Can you relate?

Clip the Clippers!! Last month, over 110 students and faculty members at Xaverian High School in nearby Bay Ridge participated in the first annual “Clip the Clippers” event. The Clippers, a nickname for Xaverian students, each shaved their heads or cut their hair to stand in solidarity with children fighting cancer. To date, Xaverian has raised over $75,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – an organization that leads the way in childhood cancer research and ensures that no family pays a bill while there because they believe that all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

A Xaverian student shaves his head in support of children fighting cancer. In addition to raising money for St. Jude, female students were given the option to donate their hair to the Children with Hair Loss foundation. Sophomore Alyssa Beltran had this to say: “Although my neck is now a little cold, my heart was warmed by all the people who donated their time, energy, and even their tresses to raise money and awareness against childhood cancer. As exciting and fun as it was, it’s important to remember the impact of an event like Clip the Clippers. There are patients out there, people just like us, who experience unimaginable struggles in their day-to-day life. To think that something as small as cutting your hair has the capacity to make a world of a difference to someone else, to create ripples of change in your community, and to reintroduce the conversation of cancer in a new and hopeful light, is truly inspiring - I’m so proud to be a part of that.” To support St. Jude’s Research Hospital, you can donate

Math Skills for a Cause In celebration of “Pi Day” (March 14), students at Our Lady of Good Counsel School put their brainpower to use for a good cause last month, solving math problems to raise money for St. Jude’s Research Hospital. Each student was sponsored to solve problems in a “funbook” supplied by St. Jude’s for the third annual Pi Day St. Jude Math-a-Thon. The St. Jude Math-a-Thon, coordinated by parents and students nationwide, was developed for grades K–8, to get students excited about math while teaching the importance of helping others. Participating students register their schools and host the Math-a-Thon to raise funds that benefit the hospital, while having fun and improving their own math skills.

Express Bus Changes The MTA is working on a project that aims to speed up express bus service from Staten Island to Manhattan. Using data analysis and input from nearly 2,500 riders, the MTA has created a redesigned network offering commuters travel times that are similar to, or faster than, their trips today. The plan includes simplified service to Manhattan; more direct routes on Staten Island; fewer stops to speed up trips; expanded off-peak and weekend service to Manhattan; and streamlined routing to either Midtown or Downtown Manhattan. In addition, route numbers will be changed to a “SIM” (Staten Island to Manhattan) numbering scheme to maintain consistency with express bus service in other boroughs. The changes are set to begin taking effect this August. Some riders, however, are concerned that their regular stops will be eliminated, thus making for a more difficult commute. According to the MTA, nearly 70 percent of riders will continue to use the same stop and the majority of others will not need to walk more than five minutes to reach their new stop. Island Mall and collected over 200 signatures from local residents in support of a petition to put pressure on the film industry to protect millions of kids here in Staten Island and worldwide from smoking imagery in movies. “It’s time for Hollywood to stop glamorizing smoking in the movies kids see,” said Christian Spiegel, age 13, Reality Check youth advocate. “Movies that contain smoking should have an “R” rating because smoking on screen kills in real life.” The Surgeon General has reported that there are direct correlations with the glamorization of tobacco use and youth initiation. According to the 2012 Surgeon General’s report, Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults, “The evidence is sufficient to conclude that there is a causal relationship between depictions of smoking in the movies and the initiation of smoking among young people.” “Parents, teachers and our community are encouraged to send a message to the movie industry that celebrities enticing kids to smoke has got to stop,” said Kallie Spiegel, age 18, and Reality Check Youth Advocate. “Send an e-mail to the MPAA at ContactUs@mpaa.org.”

P.S. 69 Foster Puppies Mrs. Miller’s fifth grade class at P.S. 69 really cares about animals. The students sought out to encourage others to adopt an animal or at least help in any way they can, so the class started an animal adoption club at school. They found litters that needed fostering through Furrever Friends Rescue. The students care for the puppies during the day and school colleagues foster them at night. They also created profiles for each puppy on Adopt a Pet and set up Amazon wish lists to help them get everything they need. Once the applicants and puppies have been matched with families, the students and teachers will throw a party for all of the families who adopted dogs and provide each family with a dog that has been socialized with children of all ages. Other schools have gotten involved as well: P.S. 52 donated supplies and I.S.72 is going to foster puppies too.

about the new changes coming to the express bus service.

You can also link to a page where you can share your own opinion with the MTA on the proposed changes.

Staten Island Parent’s winning streak continues in 2018!

Each year, the Parenting Media Association (PMA) recognizes and rewards editorial, design and general excellence in local and regional parenting publications with their Design & Editorial Awards. This year, the winners were announced at the Annual Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida, and we couldn’t be happier! Staten Island Parent (S.I. Parent) walked away with 6 awards:

• Gold Medal Award – Community & School News • Gold Medal Award – Best E-Newsletter • Silver Medal Award – Special Section Within a Publication: Holiday Guide • Bronze Medal Award – Personal Essay: You’re Stronger Than You Think, Especially When Your Children Need You • Bronze Medal Award – Service Feature: High School, My School • Bronze Medal Award – Best Website

“Our awards recognize the best work done in our industry,” said PMA President Mary Cox. “Our member publications engage with families throughout the United States, Canada and Australia, be it through print, websites, email, social media and events. Our collective goal is to making parenting easier – after all, it’s the most important job in the world – and even more of a fun ride.” Thank you for making S.I. Parent your resource for all your family’s needs—in print, online, through email, and via social media platforms. We are honored to be able to provide this important service to the Staten Island community. “If you want to be successful, it’s just this simple. Know what you are doing. Love what you are doing. And believe in what you are doing.”

– Will Rogers

Parenting Media Association (PMA) is as a national trade association of regional parenting media companies that produce high quality magazines/newspapers, companion websites, e-newsletters and local live parenting events targeted to growing families who are looking for ways to improve their lives. PMA has members all over the United States, Canada and Australia and the global reach extends to over 6 million readers per month.

Teaching Students Skills for Real-Life Work

Did you know Staten Island has a DOE Cooperative Technical Education program for high school seniors and post graduates up to age 21? I recently had the opportunity to visit to learn more about the District 79 program, which is located in the New York State Institute for Basic Research (IBR) building at 1050 Forest Hill Road. The program offers classes in Medical Billing & Coding, Building Maintenance and Carpentry. Each program has a morning session from 8:30am to 11am and an afternoon session from 12pm to 2:30pm. Students attend either session that is compatible with their current school program.

MEDICAL BILLING & CODING (Teacher: Mrs. Cerrai)

Students will learn about different types of insurances, billing for single and multi-physician offices, understanding hospital, emergency room and outpatient services. They learn about proper vocabulary, medical billing tasks, confidentiality and other laws that apply to the field. The students are exposed to a work-based learning environment and have the opportunity to participate in an internship with South Shore Eye Care. At the completion of the program, students will have an opportunity to receive Professional Certifications from the American Medical Certification Association for Billing/Coding and Medical Administrative Assistant/Electronic Billing and OSHA.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE (Teacher: Mr. Territo)

This course provides students with the theoretical and hands-on experience necessary to perform entry building

maintenance and repair functions. Students will learn sheetrock installation, finishing and repair, floors and wall tile installation, painting, door and door lock installation and repairs and landscaping. Students have installed memorials on the IBR grounds and maintained them. During my visit, I observed the students maintaining the interior and exterior of the IBR facility as part of their course work. At the completion of the Building Maintenance program, students have the opportunity to receive an OSHA certification.

CARPENTRY (Teacher: Mr. Baiardi)

Students will learn basic carpentry skills for residential and commercial construction that are applicable in both new construction and renovation/restoration. Students will learn to read blueprints and the proper use of hand and power tools. They will be exposed to cabinetmaking and millwork, as well as green carpentry and residential building framing and finishing. At the completion of the program, students will have an opportunity to receive an OSHA certification.

The current carpentry students are working on several projects, including trash-housing structures to secure the trash bins and reduce the trash that blows across the IBR campus. This will help the resident families, who are participating in the research projects at IBR. Additionally, the Coop Carpentry students are collaborating with Staten Island Tech High School via the Guild of Staten Island Tech MakerSpace teacher, Charles Dazzo, to build worktables to replace desks currently being used by SI Tech students. Last but not least, the students are building benches that will be part of the Historic Richmond Town renovation project. Mr. Dazzo hosts monthly meetings where he invites Trade Labor Union representatives to present information and opportunities to students and families. As you can see, this is an exciting opportunity for high school seniors and post graduates who are 17-21 years old. Parents, principals, and guidance counselors play a pivotal role in letting students know about these opportunities in the 9th and 10th grades, so they can plan to incorporate it into their senior year schedule. The School of Cooperative Technical Education at the Institute for Basic Research, a NYC DOE Career and Technical High School Program, is a great way to expose students to real-life work opportunities as they consider their options moving on to college and/or a career. If you are interested learning more about this program or want to know if your child’s high school already participates, please email the Coop Tech Guidance Counselor Mrs. Vitale-Mercado at RVitaleMercado@schools.nyc.gov or call (718) 290-8600 ext. 2110. talk to your kid about child abuse The conversation you need to have

Recently, the media has been filled with buzzwords and hashtags– from #TimesUp to #MeToo to #NeverAgain– it is very likely that your children (especially if they are school-aged) have heard some pretty upsetting things. It’s just as likely that they have questions.

18

april 2018

www.siparent.com

Child Abuse Safety.indd 2

While your initial instinct may be to shield them from any disturbing news, consider using the opportunity to engage in a meaningful exchange, one that will address their questions and alleviate their fears. Sounds reasonable on the outside, doesn’t it? But once you are face-to-face with that wide-eyed innocence, it can be absolutely heartbreaking to think of shattering the protective bubble of a trustworthy, fairytale world you’ve so carefully crafted for them. Time to face this parenting thing head on and do what you need to do to really keep them safe, because no matter what, the bottom line is: The Kids Come First. Always. Make these difficult subjects a part of the bigger, ongoing conversation on safety. And start young, very young. If you are open with your communication, teaching them things like the names for body parts and letting them understand which are private, you will have an easier time discussing more specific issues. Allow children to care for their own bodies when washing and using the toilet so they don’t need to depend on adult involvement when they are out. Teach young children the difference between types of “secrets.” Keeping a temporary secret so they don’t ruin a surprise birthday gift is OK, but permanent

secrets, like not telling parents about someone inappropriately touching them, is Never OK. Stories from testimonies against Larry Nassar left us shaking our heads. How did the parents not see the red flags? Some girls even tried to expose the abuse, but were not believed by their own parents. When your children want to talk to you, take them seriously, make the time, and pay attention to what they say and what they don’t say. Stay calm, and get all the facts. Be sure they know they are not to blame. Conversely, be careful not to overreact before having clear information. A Staten Island mom told me her kindergartener said she didn’t want to go to the school nurse anymore because she didn’t like it when the nurse touched her. Immediately, the mom’s reaction was one of fear. “What do you mean? Where did she touch you?” “I bumped my head at school and it hurt when she touched the bump,” was the reply. It’s always best to flesh out the details before rushing to judgment. According to the World Health Organization, children rarely disclose sexual abuse immediately after the event. Disclosure tends to be a process rather than a single episode and is often initiated following a physical complaint or a change in behavior.

feature / national child abuse prevention month We are part of a society that teaches our children to be obedient and respectful, which can put them in an awkward position. Tell your children it’s OK to say no, and support them if they are uncomfortable with hugging or kissing people—even so-called “trusted” friends and relatives! You can allow them to wave, smile, give a High 5 or fist bump instead. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network cites an unbelievable statistic: 93% of children who have been sexually assaulted knew their perpetrator. 93%! Children must know to trust their inner voice, and that they can always count on you as a protector of their safety. Again, the bottom line is always: The Kids Come First. Signs of Possible Sexual Abuse The following may indicate sexual abuse and should not be ignored: • Unexplained pain, itching, redness, or bleeding in the genital area • Difficulty and/or pain when sitting or walking • Increased nightmares or bedwetting • Withdrawn behavior or appearing to be in a trance • Angry outbursts or sudden mood swings • Loss of appetite or difficulty swallowing • Anxiety or depression • Sudden, unexplained avoidance of certain people or places • Sexual knowledge, language, or behavior that is unusual for the child’s age

feature / autism awareness

an often-misunderstood diagnosis strengths, along with challenges, are all part of the spectrum Today autism touches almost all of our lives. People often relate with recognition such as “my brother’s-wife’s-cousin’s-son has autism” if no one in their immediate family has been diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). As time goes on and nearly 2% of the children being born in the U.S. are diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, each one of us will have more direct contact with people with autism.

If you cannot immediately call to mind the strengths of those with autism, you probably don’t know enough about people on the spectrum. You may even harbor old, outdated stereotypes of non-functional children rocking in the corner. Today’s autism encompasses a much wider range of abilities and levels of functionality than the old stereotypes described. The autism community is comprised of as many personality types, talents, and interests as the rest of the world. However, unless you know someone with autism fairly well, when you interact with them the autism usually shows first, and the individual is misunderstood before they have had a chance to demonstrate some of their many abilities, talents or good qualities. People with autism are often quite bright;

some are able to recite amazing numbers of facts and details about specific topics. I hear it all the time from the parents I speak to about their children. Many people with autism are very creative and have a penchant for math, science, and technology. Temple Grandin, the most well recognized voice of the autism community, has said that “…if you love the laptop you have today, you better hope they don’t cure autism, or you won’t have another one!” Silicon Valley is reported to be teeming with individuals on the autism spectrum successfully creating the new technology the rest of us enjoy! Although not every individual with autism can work successfully, when given work that interests them and utilizes their strengths, as well as appropriate training, individuals on

the autism spectrum can be dependable, focused, and thorough with tasks that would cause many of us to glaze over after five minutes. Attention to detail is a strength that many of those on the spectrum exhibit. Today, those with ASD are finding their way to fruitful employment in banks and credit card companies who have discovered that they have a proclivity toward finding anomalies in large sets of data, making them ideal for working in the areas of automation, data analytics and cybersecurity. People with autism thrive in a routine. Once established and learned, they are usually incredibly consistent and stable employees who are very dependable, and stick to their loyalties like glue. Many people with ASD are considered to be “rule followers,” a generally positive attribute that can become annoying if you find yourself on the wrong side of the rules!

It would be an oversight to end this discussion of the strengths of those with autism without discussing their incredible creativity, ability to think outside the box, and artistic talents. So many of history’s brightest and most highly recognized creators are thought to have been on the autism spectrum. This includes such historical greats as Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, Sir Isaac Newton, Michelangelo, Mozart, Beethoven and Hans Christian Anderson. Also, contemporary creative masters Jim Henson, Bill Gates, and Tim Burton make the list*. The bottom line is that when their functional difficulties can be mitigated or ignored, and their creative talent, stalwart focusing ability, and natural consistency can be nurtured or leveraged, the formula for appreciating the strengths of those with autism in today’s world is in place. the right college coach can ease a parent’s mind How much of a role should a sports coach play in a college athlete’s life? Local sportswriter Joe LoVerde coached youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s now joined by his son, Mike, a sandlot baseball player on the Island and a senior at Lyndon State College in Vermont, where he’s on the baseball team and majors in Electronic Journalism Arts. Read more sports advice @ www.siparent.com/goodsports

32 Good Sports.indd 2

april 2018

www.siparent.com

Your child is going away to college in the fall and will be playing a sport. It will be his or her first time living away from home. No matter how independent your student athlete might think he or she is, parents naturally will have concerns. How will your child — a young adult maybe, but still your child — handle his independence? Will she develop good study habits and time-management skills during her (hopefully only) four years in college, balancing studies and her team responsibilities? Will she do the necessary work plus keep her clothes clean, room tidy and maintain a healthy diet when you aren’t there to keep after her? Will she be on time for classes, including the early-morning ones. And then, of course, there are those parties.

These are natural concerns. That’s where the right coach of your son or daughter’s college team can make all the difference in the world. This is difficult to assess if you have no past experience with the school or coach. But you can look for certain signals that will let you know whether or not that coach is looking after their players both on and off the playing field. One of the college athletes in our household found out on the first day he reported to campus 500 miles away. Unshaven after a week of vacation on the beach and wearing a cutoff shirt that bared a cross tattoo just below his shoulder, the coach laid into him big time — in full view of mom and dad.

3/21/18 3:08 PM

“This is how you make a first impression?” he scolded, his eyes bulging. “What if you meet the president of the college today? You look like a tough guy with your muscles showing and the beard. That’s not how you make a first impression.” Mom and dad were impressed. They were pretty sure the athlete was playing for a coach that could be counted on to be a surrogate parent. Some coaches don’t want to have anything to do with the parents. They know the players, but are afraid if they have a relationship with the parents there will be expectations of special treatment. That’s a shortsighted view for a coach to take. A coach doesn’t need to be every parent’s pal, but having a line of communication open with parents can be helpful. When your athlete reaches the college level, there really should be no expectation of playing time anyway. What should you expect from your child’s college coach? That he or she will take an interest in your child’s academic performance and make sure the student-athlete is on track to succeed — although not to the point of trying to get professors to change grades to maintain an athlete’s eligibility. To have a tutoring plan in place for those who need it. That he is she will be there for your child if he or she happens to do something that has them in trouble. One of the college coaches we’ve had had to step in and support two players when the vehicle they were driving after a night of partying crossed a dividing line and caused an accident, killing the driver of the other vehicle. The players were made to pay serious consequences for their indiscretion, but the coach was by their sides within an hour of the incident and stuck with them throughout, even after their parents arrived from out of state. How will you know if the coach will go the extra mile for your child? Ask the players during your child’s visit if they have any stories about the coach. Check the coach’s resume. Ask the athletic director, other coaches or former players, if possible. Having a coach you can count on to set a good example for your child and be able to step in when needed can make being the parent of a college athlete living away from home a lot less nerve-wracking.

feature /earth day, everyday!

Don’t ask; don’t offer. Teens today get more car rides than they did a generation ago. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1969, 48% students used active transportation (walking or biking) as their primary mode of travel. Today, that number is 13%. As the weather gets nicer, let teens get themselves to and from activities that are nearby. Encourage your child to walk or ride their bike instead of relying on a car to get them there. If the distance or weather prevents walking or biking, set up carpools for those going in the same direction. Make your own grab and go. Our kids’ generation relies too heavily on convenience packaging. Once a week, encourage your teen to make grab and go items instead of buying single serving items. Fill multiple refillable water bottles and stick them in the refrigerator. Make your own fruit cups for lunches and measure out your own individual serving snacks. Purchasing larger containers or buying in bulk saves on that extra packaging from becoming future garbage.

Teens are naturally oblivious to the resources around them. If the refrigerator is empty, their parents fill it. When the garbage cans get full, we bring them to the curb and the garbage is taken away. At home, they have unlimited use of electricity and water. As our teens approach adulthood, now is the perfect time to get them involved in lowering their own ecological foot print. Consider these tips for making your teen aware of his or her use, or misuse of Mother Earth.

34 Earth Day.indd 2

april 2018

www.siparent.com

The Green Teen Where Can They Cut Out the Waste? Don’t watch it run down the drain. A visual is a great way to see how much water your teen is letting slip down the drain. To show your teen how much water she uses, close the drain the next time she showers. According to the Alliance for Water Efficiency, the average shower is between 8 and 9 minutes long. When calculating your teens shower time, include the time she lets the water run while it gets up to temperature. While you can change the faucets to affect the amount of water that flows out each second, it is up to the person showering to control the duration. Unplug unnecessary cords. Let them see for themselves how much energy they are using. Teen’s love gadgets, so why not get them an electricity usage monitor, like a Kill-A-Watt (normally $20 to $50)? Plug in any device to get a reading of the kilowatt consumption of that device. Unplugging energy vampires such as computer printers and unused stereo systems can cut down on your electricity usage. Did you know the average cell phone takes approximately an hour to charge? Encourage your teen to charge their cell phones during the dinner hour instead of overnight.

No more last minute Lucy. As a parent of three teens, I dread the last minute and often Sunday night, runs to the store for supplies. While their teachers may have given them a week to get graph paper for chapter 6, your teen will often surprise you with that information the night before it’s due. The result is a last minute run to several stores that you may have already visited during the week. Ask your teen to look at his schedule for the upcoming week, determine what he needs and consolidate trips to the store. Not only will you save on gas, you will save yourself a lot of aggravation. Is it really dirty? Many parents of teens wonder how their child produced two times the amount of laundry as the rest of the family. It’s simple. As they are choosing clothes for the day, the discarded outfit never makes it back on the hanger. In a quick attempt to clean the messy floor, teens gather the clothes and deposits them directly into the hamper. Combat this wasteful habit by having your teen do their own laundry. It is amazing how resourceful teens can be when it means less work for them. Make a contest. Unlike our generation, our children have been aware of greener actions for a long time. Challenge your children to find more places to reduce waste for your family and make a game out of it. Give them a week to think about it and let everyone present their idea to the family. Take a vote and award a prize to the best idea. Start implementing it into your family’s routine right away. Teens are naturally self-absorbed. An old joke asks, “How many teens does it take to change a light bulb?” The answer: Just one. She holds it up and the world revolves around her. Teach your teen that her choices affect the Earth she shares with the other 7 billion people who live here. Simple actions, when put into practice by many, can help the world keep revolving for all of us. By Pam Molnar, the mother of three energy-hungry teens. She hopes her eco-friendly nagging sinks in soon.

make ahead breakfasts Mornings can be a tough time to maintain your supermom status when it comes to providing healthy meals. Rushing out the door when NO ONE, including the dog, is cooperating, is enough to make you want to hit the drive-thru. But with a little planning ahead, you can make breakfast easy-peasy lemon-squeezy in less time than it takes to say, “Do you want fries with that?”

cover story Repeat After Me:

I LOVE the Park, I LOVE the Park, I LOVE the Park! What Moms Are Really Thinking at the Playground I have a confession to make. I kinda hate going to the park with my kids. Other parents seem to genuinely enjoy their trips to the park. The minute the weather warms up, I see “off to the park with the kids on this gorgeous day!” all over my Facebook and Instagram feeds. Friends tell me that they spent the

40

entire day there and loved every second of it. Now don’t get me wrong; that’s cool. If you truly like the park, then good on ya. I really wish I had whichever genetic indicator I need in my DNA to enable my experience at the park to be equally as enjoyable, but more power to you for having it.

ut me? From the moment we arrive, I’m counting down the minutes ‘til it’s time to go. Just being honest! And I’m willing to bet I’m not alone. In fact, the majority of you are already nodding your heads in agreement. Maybe even some of you “off to the park!” folks are secretly with me on this. But here’s the thing: Going to the park is basically a parenting requirement. Like it or not, I HAVE to go. It doesn’t matter how I feel. Why? Because I’m a MOM, that’s why. When do I get a say in anything? Below I will walk you through a typical afternoon at the park with my kids. If you find your own park experiences to be similar, then for the love of God, stop pretending it’s so much fun! Shhhh… your kids won’t ever know. It’ll be our little secret! So anyway, a day at the park…..

Oh look, our kids are playing together. Awkward silence, awkward silence,

more awkward silence…. Ugh I can’t put off the obligatory small talk any longer. “So how old is she?… Oh, she’s adorable … Yes, they sure do grow up fast….” Yeesh.

Of all the kids in the park, of course

my kid decides to play with the hacky, rashy, booger-covered one who is definitely carrying some mutant strain of coxsackie and chicken pox, hereby known as poxsackie. Might as well round up the pediatrician and the pharmacy now.

How old do your kids need to be

in order to become the highly unaware, sittingon-a-bench-checking-her-phone-while-the-kidsplay-by-themselves mom?…..Maybe there is no minimum age, since I’m pretty sure baby poxsackie over there belongs to her– and he needs a baby wipe or ten to the face, ASAP.

Pleeeease baby, don’t climb up there. Look! There’s a little structure over there

that’s just the right size for you! Ok, I guess the tallest one it is. Just love being that psycho mom who literally climbs inside a jungle gym with her kid to keep him from plunging to his death.

And now you want to climb up that ginormous slide? By yourself? Oh, silly

me. Of course not by yourself. Mommy’s here! Climbing the ladder right behind you! So let’s get this over with.

Swings! That’s a great idea! Standing in place definitely beats chasing these kids all over the park! Twenty minutes of “standing in place” later: “Push higher, mommy! Higher!

earth does that mom who always just wears the little cross body pouch always have everything she needs? Are those things like tiny bag-shaped clown cars?

I will literally pay you in lollipops not to go anywhere near that sandbox.

HIGHERRRRRR!!!!”

It’s so freaking hot today. Would it kill them to plant a few more trees around here??

Time check: 2:30 p.m. Seriously?? We’ve only been here for 45 minutes?? HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? Hasn’t it been at least three hours? So basically, time stands still at the park, but naptime is over before I can finish my coffee.

“Mommy I have to pee!” Come again? You have to PEE? Here? In that nasty, filthy bathroom over there??? Are you sure you can’t just hold it?? At least try for me? No??? Fine. But forget the poxsackie. You’re about to get something a lot worse.

Poxsackie’s mom has some really cute sunglasses on. Hmm… I wonder if

Ok, I’ve had enough. “Kids! Time to go! Yes, I know you want to stay but it’s time to go. Mommy is two monkey bars away from a nervous breakdown right now. No, NOT one more time on the slide…. Not the swing either! LET’S GO! Oh, don’t you dare start crying. Shut those waterworks down, missy. Now where did your brother go?”

they’re cheap and just look expensive, or really expensive but look like they could potentially be cheap. Either way, I wonder where she got them. Oh wait, where did my kids go?

When the heck did they turn on the sprinklers?? These kids aren’t wearing

bathing suits, not that it matters now. And there are some big kids in there playing way too roughly. Do I go grab my kid and get soaked, or stay dry and just leave her alone? Eh, she’ll be fine. How bad could they be?

Not my best decision. Where’s that Band-Aid I had in my bag for the last year and a half? When did I lose it? Why do I never have a Band-Aid on me when I actually need it?? Well, on the bright side, she’ll probably be too upset about her boo-boo to want to stay here any longer. Wrong. Do I not know my own kids? Is that sunburn? Darn! I forgot to put sunblock on them! I mean, it’s not like I’m at the beach or anything. I knew I should have brought my big diaper bag. There’s definitely some sunblock in there. And Band-Aids. And probably some bribery candy for when it’s time to leave, too. But who wants to lug a giant bag around the park? You can’t climb up a slide wearing a giant diaper bag. And how on

parenting hacks from….alexa?? Let your virtual assistant help with parenting! There are tens of millions of Alexa devices out there today, and every day people are amazed at how Alexa is becoming a part of their lives, but did you ever think she would even help make parenting just a little bit easier. For instance, did you know Alexa can play “judge” and settle a sibling dispute?

42 Alexa Hacks.indd 2

april 2018

www.siparent.com

From helping kids sleep, to getting them out the door in the morning – even printing a coloring page, here are some Alexa lifehacks that you might not have known: “Alexa, tell me a story”: Just ask Alexa to tell a story and she’ll read an original, kid-friendly, short story like Puppy Love, Batter Up, New Pet, and more. Ask Alexa to settle a fight: Are your siblings having a disagreement? Just ask Alexa to “enable Kids Court” and she will be your impartial judge. In this skill, Alexa will ask the parties to explain the problem, ask follow-up questions to encourage kids to be truthful and friendly, then issue an impartial ruling based on their responses. Let Alexa help your kids brush their teeth: Alexa can help make brushing their teeth a habit for kids. Enable The Tooth Fairy skill and Alexa will explain facts about dental care, give words of encouragement while your kids are brushing or flossing and play music to help them with timing. Ask Alexa to play sleep sounds: Enable one of many ambient sounds skills for Alexa and make falling asleep easier for your kids. Just ask Alexa to play rain sounds, forest sounds, space sounds and much more. Get out the door in the morning: Who hasn’t had trouble getting kids out the door for

school? Enable the Out the Door skill for Alexa, and she’ll turn your daily routine into an adventure, with missions like ‘get dressed,’ ‘brush your teeth,’ or ‘get your backpack.’ Ask Alexa to print a coloring page: Do the kids need something to do? If you have an HP printer at home, with the HP Printer skill, you can just ask Alexa to print pre-installed templates like a Crayola coloring page, a word search game, bingo cards, and more! Just say, “Alexa, enable HP printer,” and she’ll walk you through the steps to link your printer. Then, your kids can just say, “Alexa, ask my printer to print a Crayola coloring page.” Get moving with music and exercise games: Enable the Music Bop to skill to get your kids moving and learning along with Alexa, or enable the Animal Workout skill – and Alexa will walk kids through various fun and funny workouts where they get to pretend to be all kinds of critters! Drop in on the kids: With a pair of Echo devices, or using the Alexa app, Drop In for a live look at your nursery or kids. Just enable the Drop In feature on a pair of Echo Devices and ask, “Alexa, drop in on the nursery,” or “Alexa, drop in on the family room.” Alexa will start an instant audio or video call (on Echo Show and Echo Spot) to the device you’ve asked for. This is a great way for working moms and dads to check-in on the family,

and you can always use the Alexa app to Drop In when you’re on the go. Ask Alexa to make a chore list: Alexa can help manage the family’s chore duties – try saying, “Alexa, make a chore list,” and Alexa will prompt you to start adding items. Need to add another task later? Just say, “Alexa, add vacuuming to my chore list,” and Alexa will update your list on the fly. This tip applies to all kinds of lists – just ask Alexa to start a shopping list, a to-do list, a packing list, and more. Let Alexa be your family’s timekeeper: Need to put a limit on screen time? Alexa can help. Just say, “Alexa, start a twenty-minute TV timer,” and she’ll start counting. Kids can ask, “Alexa, how much time is left on my TV timer?” to keep track. This timer trick works for all kind of activities. One parent shares this time-keeping lifehack: use Alexa’s timers for room cleaning challenges. Say, “Alexa, set my room cleaning timer to ten minutes,” and see how much the kids can get done before Alexa says time is up. Place a last-minute order for dinner: If you forgot it was your turn to make dinner, just ask Alexa to help. Alexa can place orders for meal delivery from services like GrubHub, Seamless and Amazon Restaurants. Just say, “Alexa, open GrubHub.” Or, if the kids have company over, just ask Alexa to place an order from Pizza Hut or Domino’s!

S

tudies have shown part of the reason this inequality persists is that when girls reach early adolescence their self-esteem drops significantly. During this stage, girls become more focused on their appearance and how boys will perceive them. This often inhibits them from competing with or in front of boys. As a result, girls fail to develop the know-how and the confidence necessary for competing later in the job market. Another reason women are underrepresented and earn less is that in spite of changes in recent generations, girls are still subject to stereotypes concerning marriage, raising children, and certain occupations. Such stereotypes steer girls, often unintentionally, into traditional paths and roles regardless of their interests and abilities. For these reasons, Take Our Daughters to Work Day was created in 1993 by the Ms. Foundation. The purpose was to help girls realize the importance of their abilities and to reach their full potential. In 2003, the observation was officially changed to Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, to be inclusive of all kids. Now, kids have the opportunity to experience the workforce one day each year, helping them to envision what tomorrow has to offer. On April 26, 2018, be a part of this nationwide event

On Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, get your child off to a good start by having your child dress accordingly and arriving on time. Avoid having your child just observe, and have some work and tasks set aside to keep your child busy throughout the day. Also, try some of the following: • Have your kid keep a journal throughout the day, describing different aspects of the occupation your child likes and dislikes and why. • Ask your daughter or son to compose questions about the occupation and interview coworkers. Questions might include the pros and cons of the job, why coworkers chose the occupation, and what their day entails. If your child is shy or opposed to the idea, don’t force it. You want your child to leave with positive feelings about the day. • Describe to your child hypothetical problems or situations that might arise in your job, and ask your child for ideas and solutions. • Help your child write a letter and an occupational questionnaire. Then have your child prepare them for mailing to businesses and professionals in occupations of interest. Be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope for a response, and take them to the post office at the end of the day. • Give your son or daughter a camera, a Polaroid if possible, to take photos throughout the day. Then have your child compile a Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day scrapbook. Your child can include descriptions of each photo and what your child learned or discovered. • Visit yourfreecareertest.com where kids can do a free online survey to discover what careers fit your child’s personality and interests. Then your child can go to kids. usa.gov/teens/jobs/ for career information designed just for young teens. • Help your child create a career folder and design forms to track school classes, grades, career interests and experiences, honors and awards, and other relevant information for preparing for a secondary education or joining the workforce.

Alternatives for taking kids to work

Not all kids will have the opportunity to participate in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Talk with family and friends and mention they can volunteer to take a child to work who otherwise won’t have the opportunity. If you’re unable to take your child to work, volunteer to assist a teacher, help with a political campaign, or other community service project in which your child can still have the experience. Give your child alternative opportunities if your child has interest in a particular occupation. If you know someone in the field, ask if your child can go to work with them. Or ask a nearby company what it’s planning for the day and how your child can participate. By Kimberly Blaker, a lifestyle and parenting freelance writer. www.theyounggma.com

How to Make a Brilliant Barometer This barometer is easy to make—you just stretch a piece of rubber cut from a balloon over the opening of a glass jar. As atmospheric pressure increases, it pushes the balloon down against the air trapped inside, and as the pressure goes down, the rubber relaxes. Tape a straw to the rubber and watch it rise and fall as the pressure changes. 1. Cut the neck off the balloon and throw it away immediately. This will make it possible to stretch the piece of rubber over the jar’s opening. There’s no need to blow up the balloon. 2. Stretch the rubber over the top of the jar, trapping the air inside. Pull the rubber tight, to get rid of any creases. 3. Secure the rubber in place with a rubber band. No air should be able to escape from the jar. 4. Cut a short piece of tape and stick it to the end of the straw. Now place the end of the straw across the middle of the rubber and attach it firmly. 5. To make the scale, neatly fold the piece of colored card stock in half lengthwise. 6. Using a ruler, draw lines ½ in (1cm) apart across one side of the folded card stock. 7. Leave the barometer somewhere where the temperature doesn’t change much, away from windows or heaters. If the air in the jar warms up or cools down, it expands or shrinks, which will affect your results. Record the barometer’s readings daily. Soon you’ll be making your own weather forecasts. Dear Teacher.indd 2

Question: I have a choice of my son attending a preschool program for a full or half-day. I think a full-day program would be too exhausting. What would the extra benefits be for his attending a full-day program? – Considering Answer: There are absolutely no hard and fast rules about how many hours a child should spend at preschool. In fact, even the experts differ in the benefits of full-day vs. half-day programs. However, they do agree that attending a preschool program no matter the length of time is beneficial. A good preschool will give children a rich background of experiences. One of the big plusses of preschool is the training it gives children in social skills. Having the chance to play frequently with other children their age helps them learn how to share, negotiate, cooperate and make friends. Plus, there is the satisfaction of belonging to a group. And attending a preschool lets children discover that other children have the worries, fears and

delights leading them to realize their own feelings are not unique. If you do not believe your child is ready for a full-day program, enroll him in a shorter program. You can feel good about doing this because there are also advantages to young children spending more time with adults, as it encourages the development of speaking and vocabulary skills. Your choice of preschools is enormous. You need to choose one carefully, as they vary greatly in quality. Highly effective preschool programs will have high standards and small class sizes, as well as staff that has received training in early childhood education. Finally, in order to choose the right preschool for your child, you must visit it and see how the teachers and children interact. You should make sure the teachers are gentle and know how to involve all children in the activities. If you think your son will be happy at a school, you are probably right.

Question: I am always nagging my child about what he does wrong at school. How can I change myself into

3/22/18 11:24 AM

a positive parent that emphasizes his strengths rather than his weaknesses? – Need to Change Answer: A change would definitely be beneficial to your son. Young children thrive on praise and encouragement, and it is important for them to receive it from both parents and teachers. When your son comes home from school, look over his papers and focus on positives. Look for something that he has done well and offer authentic praise for this work. If you see errors, instead of nagging about them, work with him to correct them. Also think about what you consider success. Is your definition too narrow? Is there some area in which he is excelling? If so, concentrate your praise in this area.

Question: My son’s grades have slipped this year. What are some possible reasons? – Worried Answer: Don’t immediately decide your child needs a lot of extra help. Instead, investigate if he may have one of the common pitfalls that can easily be remedied, putting him back on the Licensed good grades track, these include minor health, vision or hearing by the problems, sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, too much TV viewBureau of Day Care ing, excessive time online, forgetting books and papers at home or school, too many afterschool activities, and a pattern of poor attendance. • Core Curriculum

Question: My child is not being bullied, but one of his friends is by fellow classmates. My son, a fifth-grader, is quite upset about this. What should I do? – Very Concerned Answer: Seeing a friend being bullied is difficult, especially when children don’t know how to help. Fortunately, parents are in a position to help children learn how to help bullied children. One of the first things that parents should do is become as knowledgeable as they can about bullying. Besides attending bullying programs at schools, visit pacerkidsagainstbullying.org (elementary school) and pacerteensagainstbullying.org (middle school), as well as stopbullying.gov to learn more about preventing and responding to bullying. Once parents understand exactly what is involved in bullying, they can give children the tools to help them respond appropriately when friends are being bullied. Stopbullying.gov gives these five helpful steps: 1. Don’t give bullying an audience. When someone is being bullied, children should not laugh or support the bully. 2. Set a good example. Children should participate in anti-bullying activities. 3. Help the child being bullied get away if it will not put oneself in danger. 4. Tell a trusted adult (teachers and parents) about bullying incidents that are taking place. 5. Be a friend to the child being bullied. Having friends makes the bullied child feel better. And having friends around him or her will discourage bullying. Finally, when parents learn about bullying they should carefully gather the facts and report it to the school. Check the Family Calendar for bullying support workshops or see anti-bullying support group listings at siparent.com/support-groups

Celebrity Parenting Trends: From Placenta Pills and Banking Cord Blood to Babywearing and Clapping Back

H

aving children is one of life’s great equalizers. Famous parents may be able to spend more on decorating the nursery, but at the end of the day Beyoncé just wants what’s best for her babies, and the Kardashians hope their kids are happy and healthy. And don’t all moms and dads want the same thing for their little ones?

The difference here is that when someone like Chrissy Teigen claps back at a mommy-shamer, it makes national news. And when Khloe Kardashian says she plans to eat her placenta, just like Kim Kardashian did, other moms-to-be may be intrigued enough to look into the encapsulation process for themselves. Of course in all cases it’s important for people to do their own research and consult with their personal doctors about what’s best for them and their children. But we couldn’t help but be curious about a lot of these things we hear celebrities talking about these days, so we checked with medical and parenting experts to get the low-down on the usefulness of some of these parenting trends. Meanwhile, this information is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice. But let’s get right down to it and start with eating placenta... Kim did it, Kourtney Kardashian did it and Khloe says she’s going to do it, but human placentophagy definitely didn’t start with the Kards. Nikki Reed, Katherine Heigl, January Jones, Alicia Silverstone, Holly Madison and Padma Lakshmi all had their placentas encapsulated and turned into pills to take after giving birth, too, while Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Gaby Hoffman say they ingested theirs in smoothie form—and they all had positive things to say about their experiences. All the way back in 2013, before delivering daughter Rainbow, Madison wrote on her blog, “I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!” “All I’ve been doing is breastfeeding and eating chocolate chip cookies—and eating placenta, which helps,” Hoffman told E! News in 2015 about how she was taking care of herself after welcoming her daughter Rosemary. Mayim Bialik, who in addition to playing a neuroscientist on TV is also one in real life, as well as a placenta-consuming mother herself, explained the thought process behind this practice in a 2012 blog post for Kveller, writing, “Human beings are the only mammals that have chosen to not routinely ingest their placenta, which is consumed by every other mammal for its protein and iron-rich properties that are critical in helping the mother’s body recuperate after giving birth.” Experts say that if moms do plan to eat their placenta, they should discuss it with their doctor and choose an encapsulation company that practices proper food safety protocols for handling, storing and preparing the material.

Cord Blood Banking

have all spoken out in favor of (or in official partnership with) private cord-blood banks. Cord blood is pretty much what it sounds like—blood taken from the baby’s umbilical cord—and it contains potentially life-saving stem cells that can be banked for future use. When stored in a private cord-blood bank, the family pays an initial fee (typically somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000) plus an annual storage fee (ranging from $100 to $175) so that they can access their child’s stem cells at any time. With the public system, a baby’s cord blood is donated (at no charge to the parents) and becomes available to anyone who is a match and needs it. Last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics released an updated policy statement highlighting the option of cord blood banking. Dr. William T. Shearer, the lead author of the policy and a Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology and Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine, tells E! News “it’s a matter of personal choice” what parents do with a child’s cord blood. Cord blood stored in private banks has “a very restricted use,” says Dr. Shearer. “The chances that the cord blood is going to be used to save someone’s life is far greater with the public system.” “Now there is a chance,” he notes, “that new developments could happen in science and medicine in which the technique is discovered provided we could do more than the cord blood than is being done currently.”

Breastfeeding

Danica McKellar breastfed her son until he was 2 1/2, Mayim Bialik weaned her son at age 4, and Alanis Morissette said she would breastfeed “until my son is finished.” Like these moms, Kourtney Kardashian was criticized for breastfeeding son Mason Disick for too long, but on the flip side, Adele got flak for not breastfeeding son Angelo for long enough.

form of co-sleeping, which is a key tenet of attachment parenting, and countless celebs including Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky, Jessica Alba, Gwen Stefani, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Garner, Ryan Reynolds and Gisele Bündchen have been spotted babywearing (the official term for strapping the baby to your chest—remember when Reynolds was criticized for not properly securing his daughter in the carrier?), which can also be considered a form of an attachment parenting. The verdict? “If it works for you, great. It doesn’t work for everybody,” Dr. Sonya Rasmisnky, a psychiatrist specializing women’s mental health and reproductive psychiatry, tells E! News about the overall concept of attachment parenting.

Mom-Shaming Resistance

More and more, many famous moms— and dads—aren’t afraid to clap back: Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Jada Pinkett Smith, Julia Stiles, Kristin Cavallari, Hilary Duff and Snooki among others—have all shut down mom-shamers, and David Beckham, John Legend and, as mentioned, Ryan Reynolds have all had opportunities to defend themselves from the dad police. Celebrity parents definitely aren’t the only ones dealing with this, either. Dr. Berman says the shaming culture “has really gotten out of control,” explaining, “It’s like a bubble—somebody’s gotta pop it and deflate it and realize that they’re parenting from their ego and not from their soul. Because when you’re shaming other people and you’re judging o t h e r people, you can’t b e loving them at the same time.”

Parent shaming is obviously prevalent online, but there are friendly, supportive corners of the web, too. As Dr. Rasminsky puts it, “[T]here are lot of downsides to the internet, but one of the upsides is that you can find pretty much any kind of community there.” “I guess I would say if you’re feeling shamed, go find some other moms to hang out with who are going to be more supportive, because they exist,” she adds. “I think finding your people is one of the tasks of early parenting because it’s a whole new world—so that’s making friends who are moms who share your view of parenting and of what’s important, that’s possible to do and I think it’s important to do and it’s sustaining, and they’re out there.” Ultimately, we all need to remember “there is no exact science to parenting,” says Dr. Berman. “I am a mother of three, I am a psychiatrist, I am a parenting book author— there is no one way to parent. There is not a perfect formula, and if we all look at each other with a lot more love and support and less shame, we would all raise happier kids.” Provided by E! In this case, there’s no right or wrong amount of time—and to breastfeed at all or not is an entirely personal decision. “It’s what works for each mother,” Dr. Robin Berman, a psychiatrist and author of Permission to Parent: How to Raise Your Child With Love and Limits, tells E! News. “If women choose to breastfeed, that’s wonderful. If they make the choice not to breastfeed and to use formula, that’s wonderful, too.”

Attachment Parenting

Pink, Alicia Silverstone and Bialik have all spoken out in favor of attachment parenting, a child-rearing philosophy that promotes closeness through near constant touch. Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, Tori Spelling and Tia Mowry have practiced some

you could make up snack names related to characters or places from the movie — think “Smurfy Sauce” (applesauce pouches) or “Dory’s Fish Food” (cereal or chopped-up granola bars). Or it could be as simple as setting up a “concession stand” and letting the kids pick from what’s available. But you HAVE to have popcorn for them no matter what, obviously! • Tickets. Yep, tickets. Have the kids create “movie tickets” to present to you before the main attraction. Nothing fancy, normal sheet paper and crayons will do. • A comfy space. If the room where you’re

playing the movie doesn’t have kid-friendly furniture, there’s an easy solution. Two words: got pillows?

Play dates are always a great way for young ones to let off some steam. But sometimes the weather outside doesn’t cooperate, or one of the kids is tired or doesn’t feel 100%, or you dread having every single toy your child owns scattered all over your house, OR you just want to give your son or daughter’s get-together with friends a different spin.

Recipe for a Successful Movie Play Date Enter the movie play date. Here’s what you need to pull it off: • One family-friendly movie. You’ll need

to decide if it makes more sense to go with something completely new or something tried and true. • Two backup selections. Let’s face it:

kids are picky. But those little buggers are also indecisive. If your feature presentation is losing them, you’ll need a Plan B and C. Giving them too many options, however, could backfire. • Movie-themed snacks. You’d want snacks available for any play date anyway, so now all you have to do is work what you already have into a theme.

If the kids decided on a title beforehand,

Lay a bed sheet on the floor an appropriate distance in front the TV, anchor it down with some of your child’s heaviest books at each corner, and then put every pillow in your house on it. If you have beanbags or sleeping bags to toss into the mix, even better. The kids will think it’s the coolest thing in the world and will be able to move and squirm around to their hearts’ content during the show. Bonus: After the movie is over you can scoop up the sheet from its ends and then dump any dropped snacks or crumbs or spills into the garbage in one fell swoop. • Decorations. The reality is the kids are going to be excited and have fun just watching a movie together. But if you want to go above and beyond, you can make or seek out inexpensive decorations like movie-themed popcorn bowls, trays, plastic table runners, napkins, balloons and streamers before the big day. You could even copy real theaters by hanging some movie posters around.
