Page 1

Hello my name is Michelle Chen! I am a student at the University of Tennessee Knoxville in the College of Architecture and Design, and I am studying for my Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture.

My interest in design has led to my passion for discovering the purpose and functionality of a designed space, and how it affects human interaction and relationships. I am particularly interested in the impact of how space can shape and alter the human experience. My goal is to utilize my knowledge and experiences in order to directly shape a positive and impactful human experience through design.

CENTER SEATING AREA

I started the design process by breaking down the shape of a circle. These sketch iterations represent the circulation and structural formation of the space. I experimented with different circular shapes to replicate the feeling of intimacy amongst users of the space.

PONDEROSA PASSAGE

Architectural Installation + Recreational

Ponderosa Passage is an unconventional playground built for both children and their parents. The structure is designed for children to explore on their own but also be able to engage and interact with their parents. The design aims to enhance each individual’s experience with nature. Talahi Park lies directly next to the site, Sequoyah Hills Park, but it is often overlooked by vistors. Therefore, creating a stucture between the two parks will not only help improve Sequoyah, but also integrate and preserve Talahi’s history. Talahi Park was designed by Robert Foust, and was originally named “Old Papoose Park.” Papoose is an informal Algonquian phrase used to describe a “child” or a type of cradleboard they would use to carry their children in. The project is aimed to engage younger individuals since Foust orignally designed it for children, more specifically, the Cherokee Indians who previously inhabited the land in the past. This explains the Cherokee symbols that are engraved throughout the concrete monuments in the park which are a way to pay respects to the Cherokees.

Robert Foust’s vision for Talahi Park was to “harmonize an Indian past, technical future, and natural forest setting.”
