Laureata in Lettere, Arte ed Educazione, è stata coordinatrice dell’Ufficio Cultura del Comune di Reggio Emilia e coordinatrice generale della prima edizione del festival Fotografia Europea. Direttore della Collezione Maramotti dal 2006 al 2017 per la quale ha collaborato al programma artistico e di acquisizione delle opere di artisti di fama internazionale e giovani talenti.

In collaborazione con Whitechapel Gallery ha lavorato per il Max Mara Art Prize for Women.

Dal 2018 è membro del comitato scientifico della Fondazione Palazzo Magnani.

Curatrice indipendente, laureata in Comunicazione nei Mercati dell’Arte. Ha frequentato l’International Curatorial Program organizzato dal NODE Center for Curatorial Studies. Nel 2011 ha fondato DIORAMA editions. Nel 2014 ha co-fondato Siliqoon, un’art label dedicata alla produzione e alla promozione dell’arte contemporanea. Nel 2018 ha lanciato PANORAMA Milano, un archivio online di studio visit con artisti di base a Milano. Ha scritto per diverse riviste tra cui CURA., Day Off, Domus, Flash Art, L’Officiel e ZERO.

Graduated in Literature, Art and Education, she was Head of Reggio Emilia’s Office of Cultura and general coordinator of the European Week of Photography. Director of Maramotti Collection from 2006 to 2017, for which she curated the artistic and acquisition program of artworks by internationally acclaimed artists and new talents.

In collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery, she worked for the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, focusing on residencies. Since 2018, she is a member of the Scientific Committee of Palazzo Magnani Foundation.

Independent curator, graduated in Communication in the Art Markets. She attended the International Curatorial Program organized by the NODE Center for Curatorial Studies. In 2011 she founded DIORAMA editions. In 2014 she co-founded Siliqoon, an art label dedicated to the production and promotion of contemporary art. In 2018 she launched PANORAMA Milano, an online studio visit archive with Milan based artists.

She has written for several magazines including CURA., Day Off, Domus, Flash Art, L’Officiel and ZERO.

Nel 2009 ha avviato il Premio alle Passioni La Seconda Luna. Co-curatore del Premio dedicato alla performance emergente Live Works dal 2012 al 2016. Insegna Fenomenologia delle arti contemporanee presso lo IED.

Sapere con consapevolezza lo spazio che occupiamo, come lo occupiamo, e che conseguenza ha il nostro comportamento nel tempo è il concetto alla base di questo lavoro. L’importanza del passare, dell’attraversare, dell’essere traccia: linea indelebile che si scrive con il tempo.

Il fonometro diviene testimone della intensità del pubblico e del suo passaggio restituendo visivamente una traccia tanto incisiva quanto silenziosa.

To be fully aware of the space we occupy, of the way we occupy it and which consequences our behaviour determines in time is the the concept behind this work.

The importance of going through, of crossing, of leaving and being as visible traces, a lasting, indelible line which is written in time.

The sound-level meter becomes a witness of the intensity of the audience and its passage by visually returning an incisive as well as silent trace.

A coupler is full of gore, exposing a malicious story of some dehumanizing mechanical system. What fantastical narratives exist in found objects? How does memory become hallucination and why is the American narrative so haunting?

Gli schermi digitali racchiudono un paradosso: permettono di soddisfare il desiderio di conoscenza ma, a causa della luce blu, rendono impossibile una visione nitida deteriorando l’occhio. Operando un’analogia tra macchina fotografica e corpo umano, il progetto consiste in una serie fotografica e un video senza obiettivo che mostrano idealmente ciò che il nostro occhio, privato della retina, dovrebbe vedere. Ognuno è libero di vedere ciò che la mente suggerisce (Apofenia).

Digital screens contain a paradox: they allow to satisfy the desire of knowledge but, due to the blue light, make clear vision impossible, deteriorating the eye and forcing the use of external supports. Operating an analogy between camera and human body, the project consists of a photographic series and a video without a lens that ideally show what our eye, deprived of the retina, should see. Everyone is free to see what the mind suggests (Apofenia).

Dichiarare significa manifestare la propria posizione e dunque la propria presenza.

La dichiarazione nella sua forma più astratta può non avere conseguenze, ma trattiene comunque in sé la tensione potenziale che la rende a tutti gli effetti unico strumento per plasmare l’esistente.

To declare means to express one’s position and therefore one’s presence. The declaration in its most abstract form may have no consequences, but it retains in itself the potential tension that makes it to all intents and purposes the only instrument for shaping the existing.

L’opera pone a tema il mangiare come un atto sociale e religioso. Azione al contempo così intima e collettiva, così necessaria e voluttuaria da diventare parte integrante delle più grandi ritualità religiose; aiutandoci insieme a non sentirci soli. Oggi la religione pare non esser più una risposta soddisfacente a combattere la solitudine, ma ciò non vuol dire che quest’ultima non esista più.

Eating as a social and religious act, an action that is at the same time intimate and collective. Its necessity but also its voluptuousness has led this habit to become an important part of known religious rituality, helping us to avoid the loneliness.

Nowadays, religion seems unfit to play this role, but it surely doesn’t mean that loneliness doesn’t exist anymore.

Il video è costituito dalla giustapposizione di due elementi: il video di un uomo americano intento a descrivere i suoi tatuaggi e la descrizione audio di un sarcofago tardo egizio del 900 a.C. Lo scopo di ciò è quello di indagare il tema della spiritualità oggigiorno. Forse essa è ancora un elemento dominante nella nostra società, ma, piuttosto che essere proiettata in un futuro dopo la morte, viene invece incorporata nel presente, nel nostro corpo mortale.

The video is a juxtaposition of a description of an ancient Egyptian coffin from the 900 B.C. and a vlog of a middle-aged man describing his tattoos. The aim here is to investigate the concept of spirituality nowadays. Maybe today society is not so devoid of that strong sense of spirituality that used to characterize ancient societies.

But the real difference is that, instead of projecting this faith in the “after”, we are trying to embody it in the today, in the present moment, in the evanescence of our mortal bodies.

Sul pavimento della galleria sono sparsi migliaia di pop-corn ed un singolo chicco di mais non scoppiato. Quest’ultimo diventa metafora non solo di resistenza fisica ma anche politica. Disperso tra centinaia di altri pop-corn, l’esistenza del chicco di mais (come suggerito dal titolo dell’opera) diventa protagonista di una ricerca, che si trasforma in un gioco visivo per il fruitore, che dovrà provare ad avere un atteggiamento più lento ed oculato nei confronti dell’osservazione rispetto alla sua normale capacità di focus quotidiana.

Thousands of popcorn and one single, separated corn are sprinkled on the gallery floor. The latter becomes a metaphor not only for physical but also political resistance.

Dispersed among hundreds of other popcorn, the existence of the unpinned corn (as suggested by the title of the work) becomes the protagonist of a research, which turns into a visual game for the user, who is invited to have a slower and more careful attitude towards observation, than his normal daily focus.

Il titolo, “home, sweet home”, si riferisce ad un modo di dire generalmente usato per indicare un senso di comodità e di sicurezza nel ritornare a casa. Lo zucchero, materiale molto fragile, contraddice la solidità della dimora. L’opera vuole enfatizzare il senso di precarietà dell’abitazione e dell’identità.

The title, “home, sweet home”, refers to a common saying generally used to indicate a sense of comfort and security when coming back home. Sugar, a very fragile material, contradicts the security of the dwelling. The work wants to emphasize the sense of precariousness of housing and identity.

“Pluriball” è stata concepita come un esercizio in cui viene riprodotto l’omonimo materiale sopra una tela, utilizzando esclusivamente il pennello e il colore ad olio. La processualità della realizzazione viene risaltata dai passaggi di tonalità del colore, che corrispondono ciascuno a una diversa giornata di lavoro in cui il colore rosa viene ricreato da capo. Diviene importante il tempo di produzione, così come la manualità: concetti che determinano la dimensione estetica dell’opera, che può essere letta come una sorta di “pharmakon”, dove la ripetitività dell’esecuzione assume valenza meditativa, di riposo, di antistress.

“Pluriball” has been conceived as an exercise, in which the bubble wrap is reproduced on canvas, using only a brush and the oil paint.

This process is visible in the passages of color tones: each tone corresponds to a different working day in which the color pink is made from scratch. Central to the painting is the time and the act of making: these concepts, applied to the reproduction of a wrapped canvas, outlines the aesthetic dimension of the artwork, which can be considered a “pharmakon” for the current mass production.

Its repetitiveness assumes here a meditative, calming and de-stressing value.

In maniera analoga all’opera “Agostino”, questo lavoro indaga temi quale la riconoscibilità e l’impatto all’interno della produzione contemporanea completamente legata al logo, utilizzando simbolicamente le tre strisce che, a causa della loro genericità, non sono risultate un marchio registrabile, nonostante il referente sia ben noto ai più.

Similarly to the artwork “Agostino”, this work addresses the importance of notions such as recognazibility and impact in the contemporary production, which is highly dependent on logos. I therefore symbolically use the three stripes which, because of their universality, are not registrable as a brand name, even if their reference is well known.

L’opera è concepita come un dispositivo luminoso che combina materiali organici e plastici con componenti elettrici. La lastra è stata realizzata su una cornice rettangolare costruita secondo la sezione aurea, in cui il fruttosio fuso assume un profilo irregolare.

Durante il processo di solidificazione sono stati incorporati i componenti del circuito elettrico al neon. A causa della reazione chimica tra il fruttosio e la resina epossidica, il contorno è instabile.

The work is conceived as a luminous device that combines organic and plastic materials with electrical components. The slab was made on a rectangular frame built according to the golden ratio, in which the melted fructose takes a geometric and irregular outline. During the process of solidification the components of the neon electric circuit were incorporated. Because of the chemical reaction between the fructose and the epoxy resin the outline is unstable, that process involves changes in his color and shape.

Chorus, come nella poesia di Kerouac, non descrive un luogo ben definito, non è uno spazio fisico reale, ma è qualcosa che risiede dentro l’autore, dentro il lettore, entrambi persi nel labirinto di significati e rimandi che questo assume. È un viaggio personale che serve a colmare una distanza, la stessa distanza che separa uomo e paesaggio. È un viaggio a ritroso, un processo di trasformazione, dalla morte alla vita.

106th Chorus, as in Kerouac’s poetry, does not describe a well-defined place, it is not a real physical space, but it is something that resides within the author, inside the reader, both lost in the maze of meanings and references that this assumes. It is a personal journey that serves to bridge a distance, the same distance that separates man and landscape. It is a journey backwards, a process of transformation, from death to life.

«L’opera è dedicata a me stessa, celebra la mia rinascita come artista e introduce una nuova ricerca avviata nel 2019. La torta è una critica allo stereotipo femminile che lega la donna all’idea di dolcezza e sensualità, rispettivamente rappresentate dalla pasticceria e dalle lunghe extensions. Ciò che sembra una graziosa creazione di “cake design” si rivela in tutta la sua decadenza.

“The work is dedicated to me, it celebrates my rebirth as an artist and introduces a new research started in 2019. This cake is a criticism of the female stereotype that binds women to the idea of sweetness and sensuality, represented by pastry and long extensions. What looks like a graceful cake design creation appears in all its decay.”

In una costellazione di oggetti timidi e inadeguati, Gutter-Gargoyle (2019), un ibrido tra una grondaia e un gargoyle, con le sembianze di una creatura sottomarina, è concepito come un indice che guida lo sguardo del visitatore. Fatta di doppie, addirittura triple, identità, l’opera diventa una chimera che, nonostante l’aspetto goffo e grottesco, è in grado di innescare un’antinarrazione e un modello alternativo di utilizzo dello spazio e di osservazione e comprensione dei lavori.

In a constellation of timid, inept objects, Gutter-Gargoyle (2019), a hybrid gutter/ architectural gargoyle with the features of some underwater creature is conceived as index that guide the viewer’s gaze. Composed of double and even triple identities, the work becomes a “chimeras” that despite being clumsy and grotesque is capable of triggering an anti-narration and alternative model of using space, of observing and understanding works.

Se l’obiettivo è creare un effetto collage, non c’è niente di meglio che trovare un punto di partenza in comune, come fa apparentemente CENTAURE attraverso l’aspetto ready-made degli elementi che compongono l’opera, rendendoli associabili. Perdendo la loro originale individualità di camicie e di corno, e il loro posizionamento domestico, sono ora frammenti di una visione liquefatta, ma affascinante.

If it is indeed a matter of creating a collage effect, there is nothing better than finding a common starting point, which CENTAURE seemingly does with the ready-made aspect of the items, thus making them relatively associable. Losing their original individuality as shirts and horns or domestic placement, they are now fragments of a melted but fascinating glances.

Due pezzi di tessuto dello stesso stendardo di cotone antico, da cui è stato rimosso il testo originale, tagliati in due bandiere, sono cuciti insieme e idealmente posizionate su dei portabandiera, che fanno sì che il vento le trasformi in una vela. L’opera riflette sulla nostra eredità, sull’irrilevanza dei confini e di come attraverso l’unione, la comprensione e l’accettazione reciproca, sia possibile crescere insieme. I movimenti delle bandiere ricordano quelli di un Pas de Deux di danza, possibile solo se lo si esegue insieme.

Una selezione di simbolismo.

Two pieces of fabric of the same antique cotton banner, which had its original text information removed, cut into two flags that are hand sewn together and ideally put onto two flagpoles that causes the wind to make them into a sail. The work contemplates our inheritance and the insignificance of borders and how by uniting, understanding and accepting one another we grow together.

The flags movements resemble those of a Pas de Deux in ballet, that only together we can perform. A selection of symbolism.

Quest’opera si concentra sull’infanzia, e su come, in caso di un’educazione infelice, essa ci perseguiti per tutta la nostra vita. “Costruire un forte” è l’espressione per indicare un bambino che costruisce una tenda nella sua camera, per gioco o per solitudine. Spesso è positivo che un bambino si dedichi a quest’attività ludica, ma, nel caso sia un santuario che lo protegge dalla violenza e dall’abuso che lo circondano, diventa qualcosa di tossico; da qui il materiale dell’opera: piombo.

This work emphasizes childhood, and how our childhood haunts us throughout our whole life in case of an unfortunate upbringing ‘To build a fort’ is the expression when a child makes a tent in their room, either for play or solitude, often it signals a positive thing for a child to pursue this playful activity, but in case it’s a sanctuary that protects the child from the violence and abuse that surrounds him, it becomes toxic, hence the material: lead.

In una continua contaminazione tra livelli, l’immagine è ambigua, diventa elmo o corona, fluttuante o adagiata, ridefinita dal piano nitido di uno sfondo-sipario. Mi interessa l’eventualità di una visione che oscilla tra attrazione e repulsione, sensualità e inquietudine, familiare e ignoto».

The painting results from a layering and erasure process that leads to a continuous redefinition of the image. The traces of a vase of flowers sink into a semi-removed surface.

In a continuous contamination between levels, the image becomes ambiguous, a helmet or a crown, floating or lying down, redefined by the clear plane of a background-curtain.

The vision oscillates between attraction and repulsion, sensuality and disturbance, something familiar and the unknown.

Tra grido e silenzio, realta e finzione, corporeo e inanimato. Mi interessa il delinearsi di un’immagine instabile, l’alternarsi di suggestioni latenti, simili al ricordo di un sogno che si imprime nella mente senza poter essere messo a fuoco.

“We are our memory, we are that chimerical museum of shifting shapes, that pile of broken mirrors” (J.L. Borges). A crowd of see-through heads lie as fruit on a tablecloth, and the openings of these fallen helmets take the shape of gaping mouths at times. Between shout and silence, between reality and fiction, bodily and inanimate objects. The artist creates an unsteady image, the alternation of latent suggestions, similar to the memory of a dream that is imprinted in the mind but impossible to be fully focused.

In “The Construction of Anger in Women and Men”, Jean Baker Miller sostiene che la nostra cultura evoca costantemente la rabbia e pone dei limiti alla sua espressione. I limiti per le donna sono più restrittivi rispetto a quelli per gli uomini. La rabbia delle donne è stata per lungo tempo ignorata e repressa.

Tuttavia è stata una delle forze più potenti in politica e cultura, confluendo in proteste e movimenti che hanno portato cambiamenti duraturi. L’opera XXXY esamina e illustra la complessità dell’impatto, contemporaneo e storico, della rabbia delle donne.

Jean Baker Miller argues in “The Construction of Anger in Women and Men”, that our culture constantly evokes anger and places constraints on its expression. The constraints for women are more restrictive than those for men. Women’s anger has long been dismissed and repressed. Yet women’s fury has been a most powerful force in politics and culture, coalescing in protests and movements that brought long-lasting changes. The work XXXY examines and illustrates the complexity of the contemporary and historical impact of women’s anger.

Attraverso l’uso della jesmonite, un materiale simile al gesso, intendo creare un senso di rigidezza e controllo, un movimento congelato, riflettendo sul ristretto spazio vitale di un Hikikomori. In contrasto con questo, ho poi aggiunto una serie di elementi che evocano movimento, rottura ed energia per riflettere sul conflitto interiore di un Hikikomori. Ho deliberatamente scelto questo processo per per cercare rifugio in un’epoca in cui l’interazione sociale sembra essere così facile attraverso le nuove tecnologie e l’uso di dispositivi digitali.

Through the use of jesmonite, a plaster like material, I aim to create a sense of sternness and control, a frozen movement, reflecting upon a Hikikomori’s restricted space of living.

I then set elements in direct contrast with this, illustrating movement, rupture and energy to reflect upon the internal conflict of a Hikikomori. I deliberately chose this process to do seek total retreat in an age where socially interaction is seemingly made so easily through new technologies and the use of digital devices.

Durante un’esposizione un testo è stato tradotto dall’italiano all’inglese per la prima volta e stampato come libro. Nuove versioni del libro sono state stampate e il testo rimaneggiato con conseguenti cambi nell’impaginazione. La pubblicazione e la distribuzione è già stata pianificata, ma sospesa. Il titolo originale è “Lavoro intellettuale e sviluppo capitalistico”. Il libro è appoggiato su un famoso scaffale degli anni Cinquanta.

Over the course of an exhibition a text was translated from Italian to English for the first time and printed as a book, while the graphic design was reworked. New versions of the book have since been printed and the text re-edited along with changes in the layout.

The final publication and mass distribution is planned but suspended. The original title of the text is “Lavoro Intellettuale e Sviluppo Capitalistico”. This edition of the work is sited on a famous shelving unit from the 1950s.

La frequenza fornisce una strategia per facilitare la nostra ricerca del potenziale umano. In questo progetto, Batista cerca il potenziale di resistenza attraverso strategie di non-azione, indagando ciò che serve per essere ottimizzato e il futuro verso il quale ci stiamo dirigendo.

Once seated on a PVC sculpture, the viewer becomes the subject and the pink noise induces a deep state of focus and tranquillity, providing a soothing soundtrack to augment our frantic lives. The frequency provides a strategy to facilitate our quest for peak human potential. Yet within the gallery context, Batista seeks its potential for resistance via strategies of non-action.

Through different aspects of the installation and a new series of photographic works, the artist dives into what it takes to be optimized and the future that we are headed towards.

L’opera dealinea e preannuncia un futuro con ampie ripercussioni. Nelle fotografie non sappiamo chi sta esaminando chi, e per quali scopi. L’opera mette in discussione le nostre scelte riguardo a come i robot sono costruiti a nostra immagine. In particolare, merita di essere esaminata la “genderizzazione” dei robot AI in assistenti di sesso femminile, condiscendenti e pronti a dare piacere, in quanto i nostri sogni e incubi da sci-fi stanno diventando realtà.

The work is a way to imagine and forewarn a future with wide implications. In these photographs we don’t know who is examining who and to what ends. It brings into question our choices of how we make these machines and robots in our image. Specifically the gendering of robot AI into acquiescent female assistants who are there to please, needs to be examined as our sci-fi dreams and nightmares become reality.

Al centro due personaggi del teatro, forse due innamorati, stanno in posa. Attraverso il multiframe e l’adozione di strutture compositive legate alla pittura e alla decorazione storica, lo spazio pittorico/ architettonico favorisce l’organizzazione di una piattaforma narrativa. La riconversione dello stato di allerta, la sensazione di attesa delle bombe, il ritorno di un amante a casa.

“Confessions Of Siege” is a panel worked and decorated with subjects, icons and figures. Two theatre characters in the center, perhaps two lovers, are posing. Through the multiframe and the adoption of compositional structures linked to painting and historical decoration, the pictorial/ architectural space favors the organization of a narrative platform. The reconversion of the state of alert, the feeling of waiting for the bombs, the return home of a lover.

“Your Daddy Drinks Because You Cry” is an infinite dysfunctional narration activated by curving a sentence on itself. The continuous writing becomes a transitional passage between a single identity/meaning, towards the construction of infinite possibilities, in continuous expansion and curvature/ modification. A dynamic image as the goal of the new non-temporal balance and space of shared consciousness/empathy.

L’opera è ottenuta lavando i tessuti in un liquido viscoso, che rende stancante l’atto del lavare, ma che permette di riconnettersi, con un gesto antico, alla biografia dell’artista: quello di una donna intenta a lavare i panni in un fiume sacro. «Siamo tutti segnati dall’universo dei nostri avi. In questo modo, molti non costruiscono la propria personalità, ma essa deriva dai membri appartenenti al loro circolo emotivo. Essere nato in una famiglia è come essere “posseduto”. Questo senso di possesso viene trasmesso da generazione a generazione».

The piece is composed by washing the fabrics in a viscous liquid, that makes the washing tiring but allows to get in touch, through an ancient gesture, with the biography of the artist: that of a woman washing fabrics in a sacred river. “We are all marked by the universe of our ancestors. So, many individuals make their own personality that is not their own, but that comes from one or more members of their emotional circle.

Being born in a family is like being possessed.

This possession is passed on from generation to generation.”

“Exhaust” è un oggetto costruito nella speranza che il materiale usato e il modo in cui è assemblato trasformino la scultura in un oggetto magico. La speranza è che la scultura funga da amuleto. Nonostante il tentativo fosse quello di creare un oggetto potente, le sculture spesso appaiono stanche, esauste.

Sembrano i contenitori di un potere che ora è perso, e qui è dove risiede la loro fallibilità, la loro natura umana e figurativa.

“Exhaust” is an object assembled in the hope that the used material and the way of assembling it will make the sculpture work like a magic object. The hope is that the sculpture will become an amulet. Although the attempt is to create a powerful object, the sculptures often seem tired, exhausted. They seem the container of power now lost. This is where their fallibility, their human and figurative essence resides.

TH s’inquadra nell’interesse per la dimensione sorgiva delle immagini. Il dipinto esplora lo stato germinale e larvale dell’apparizione, individuando forme dal carattere fantasmatico e aleatorio.

I selected two large format paintings and a drawing, they are all part of the last personal exhibition “FIUR”, inaugurated at Magazzini del Sale in Siena, November 2019. TH is part of the interest in the pristine dimension of images. The painting explores the original state of the revelation, identifying shapes with a ghostly and random character.

Osservando da vicino Il Monta i vasi e lo steccolecco ci si accorge che la stratificazione dei segni e dei gesti non conduce a forme solide e volumetriche, ma a figure che hanno l’aspetto di sagome. La vernice copre le forme dipinte, lasciandole talvolta trasparire come filigrane, come echi di sottofondo. Eppure, anche le immagini più definite in primo piano, quelle arboree e antropomorfe o le architetture elementari, hanno una consistenza instabile, appena più solida delle filigrane sul fondo.

By observing the painting, one realizes that the stratification of signs and gestures does not lead to solid and volumetric forms, but to figures that look like shapes. The paint covers the painted shapes, sometimes leaving them like watermarks, like background echoes.

Yet even the most defined images in the foreground, the arboreal and anthropomorphic images, as well as the elementary architectures, have an unstable consistency, barely more solid than the watermarks on the bottom.

Questo lavoro vuole giustapporre due tipologie di immagini opposte per contenuto e messaggio e modalità di fruizione, ma sorprendentemente simili per composizione figurativa. Si tratta di immagini tratte dal film Salò, o le 120 giornate di Sodoma di Pier Paolo Pasolini (1975) e le fotografie degli abusi sessuali della prigione di Abu Ghraib (2003/2004). Le cornici a dittico rimandano alle modalità inappropriate di diffusione di tali immagini e alla loro anomala irruzione nella vita quotidiana.

This work juxtaposes two different types of images that are opposites in terms of content, message, and ways of exploiting.

On the other hand, they are surprisingly similar in their figurative composition.

These are stills from the film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) by Pier Paolo Pasolini and pictures of the abuse scandal at the Abu Ghraib prison (2003/2004). The diptych frames refer to the way those images have improperly broken into people’s life.

Questo lavoro rientra in un progetto più ampio che parte da alcuni film porno reperiti su Internet, sul cui sfondo si trovano alcuni capolavori della storia dell’arte. L’immagine selezionata, che è in risoluzione molto bassa, viene stampata su tela. I volti degli attori o attrici vengono coperti da alcune “maschere”: si tratta di volti presi da altri dipinti del medesimo autore la cui opera si trova sullo sfondo. Il risultato è una nuova immagine che nasce dall’opera “dietro” al porno.

This work is part of a project that starts with porn movies found on the Internet. They unexpectedly have on the background some masterpieces of the history of art. After having selected the image, which is usually low quality, it is printed it on canvas. The last step is to hide the faces of the porn performers with some masks: it consists of faces taken from other paintings by the same painter in the background. The result is a new image, starting from the piece of art “behind” the porn.

Sia sculture che scarpe, sono una manifestazione delle speranze e delle ansie per il tempo a venire. Partendo da un paio di zeppe anni ’70 fatte a mano in UK, durante un’era in cui identità e genere furono messe in discussione ed idee di rivoluzione, pace globale e ecosostenibilità si fecero spazio; e da una replica contemporanea prodotta in seria e comprata su Amazon, in un’era dove identità e genere sono nuovamente al centro del dibattito internazionale e un futuro distopico iper-capitalista sembra inevitabile.

Both sculptures and shoes, they are an expression of hope and fear for the future.

They are created starting from a pairs of wedges from the 1970s, hand-made in UK, during a time in which discussions about notion of identity and gender arose, and the idea of revolution, peace and sustainability came to the fore. These are combined with a contemporary replica made in series and bought on Amazon, in a time in which identity and gender are again central topics in the international debate and a dystopian hyper-capitalism seems unavoidable.

Partendo da quattro giacche formali da uomo di colore scuro, ho costruito due non-uniformi.

Su questi quadri indossabili sono inscritti simboli cliché antitetici rappresentanti amore e guerra ma anche simboli fallici, lacrime, disegni di scarpe e stivali anni ‘70. I ‘Vestiti di Luce’ sono parte integrante delle performances ‘Knaves of Radiance’; con esse creo ambienti che facilitano la generazione del pensiero critico ed incoraggiano la trasformazione personale e collettiva.

Starting with fours dark-colored suit jackets, I created two non-uniforms. On these wearable paintings, there are inscribed a number of antithetical stereotypes depicting love and war, phallic symbols, tears, drawings of shoes and boots from the 1970s. ‘Vestiti di Luce’ [Drawings of Light] are key parts of the performances ‘Knaves of Radiance’: through them, I design environments which facilitate the generation of critical thinking, as well as the individual and collective transformation.

“Il paese sommerso” è un progetto dedicato a Fabbriche di Careggine, paese abbandonato e poi sommerso nel 1947, per la realizzazione di una diga. Dal 1947 in poi il lago è stato svuotato tre volte, l’ultima nel 1994. Il paese si trova attualmente sotto ad 80 metri d’acqua.

Usando le immagini dell’ultimo svuotamento, l’artista ha ricostruito il paese in scala 1:50, per poi fotografarlo. L’uso di tonalità scure e la lontananza dalla luce, sono simbolicamente metafora dell’inconscio, di un luogo “esiliato” dalla coscienza, da ciò che è visibile.

“The submersed town” is a project dedicated to Fabbriche di Careggine (Lu), an abandoned village which was then submerged in 1947, for the construction of a dam. From 1947 onwards the lake was emptied three times, the last one in 1994. The town is currently under 80 meters of water. Using the images of the last emptying, the artist rebuilt the country in 1:50 scale, to then photograph it.

The use of dark shades and the distance from the light symbolize the unconscious, a place “exiled” from what is visible.

‘Thanks a million’, esplora il concetto di monoculturalismo attraverso l’utilizzo di biglietti di auguri. Il lavoro consiste in un totem di legno sulla cui superficie sono incisi a fuoco messaggi presi da biglietti di auguri, organizzati seguendo il ciclo vitale umano, dalla nascita alla morte. Il totem di legno con i suoi font giocosi e l’amara ironia applicata all’esperienza umana del concetto di tempo, è inserito alla base di un monumento funebre, coprendone e sostituendone la lapide.

‘Thanks a million’, explores the concept of monoculturalism through the use of greetings cards. The works consists in greeting cards messages burned on the surface of a wooden totem following the cycle of human life, from birth to death. The wooden totem with its playful use of fonts and its bitter irony applied to human experience of time is set into the base of a tombstone covering and replacing the headstone of the funeral monument.

‘You and us’ consiste in uno scenario immaginario costruito su un tavolo. Un paesaggio innevato dove le strade dividono un gruppo di Abeti da un singolo albero di Abete. Le decorazioni del legno e la scelta dei materiali tessili ricordano motivi infatili, uniformi, decorazioni da festa, copriletti e lenzuola. Il sentimento iniziale di calore, accoglienza e familiarità si trasforma piano piano in un senso di disagio ed inquietudine, perchè c’è un’albero separato dal gruppo?

‘You and us’ consists of an imaginary scenery built on a table depicting a snowy landscape where road sections divide a group of pine trees to a single pine tree. The decoration of the wood and fabrics recall childhood motifs for parties, uniforms, beddings. The initial feeling of warmth and homeliness turns into a strong sense of uneasiness once the viewer starts to create narrative around the single, separated tree, maybe exluded from the group.

Il progetto parte da una scomposizione degli elementi pornografici quali: immagini, suoni, sottotitoli nel tempo del post-porno.

The first chapter of the YCTYF research, “Liquid Sounds” represents Manuela, a Berlin-based porn foley artist who through her hands and different materials gives life to an orgiastic narration, becoming herself a pornographic subject. The project starts from a deconstruction of pornographic elements such as: images, sounds, subtitles in the time of post-porn.

La ricerca parte dai segni che ci mostrano la nostra dimensione temporale: le rughe. Quegli stessi segni, se estremizzati ed evidenziati, vanno a dar vita sul volto a una sorta di maschera archetipale. Attraverso il confronto di due storie parallele due sorelle centenarie ci raccontano i loro punti di vista sulla vita e sulla morte che si fondono nello stesso presente.

Queste figure, facendo così, appaiono quasi come due “creature immortali”.

The research starts from the signs that show us our temporal dimension: wrinkles. Those same signs, if extremed and highlighted, generate on the face a sort of archetypal mask. Through the comparison of two parallel stories, two centenary sisters tell us their views on life and death that merge in the same present. These figures, in doing so, appear almost as two “immortal creatures”.

Irene Fenara qui si concentra sulle telecamere di sorveglianza. Le immagini che mostrano spesso non sono chiare, sporcate da una serie di errori, come un ostacolo davanti all’obiettivo, un difetto di risoluzione o un’evidente alterazione cromatica. Irene Fenara investigates and interprets the way machines look. There are hundreds of mechanical looks before which we pass every day. Irene Fenara here focuses on surveillance cameras. The images produced are not clear, soiled by a series of errors, such as an obstacle in front of the lens, a defect of resolution or a clear chromatic alteration.

Il video si concentra sull’impossibilità di tenere lo sguardo fisso al cielo da una videocamera di sorveglianza, che svolgendo il suo compito di controllore riporta sempre lo sguardo automatizzato verso ciò che va osservato.

La possibilità di comandare la videocamera da remoto permette di deviare lo sguardo per perdersi per brevi momenti nella contemplazione del cielo per poi tornare a rigide architetture. Questo continuo su e giù è la tensione che muove tra i grandi sogni e la realtà quotidiana.

The video focuses on the impossibility of keeping the gaze fixed at the sky by a surveillance camera, which, carrying out its task as a controller, always returns the automated look towards what must be observed. The possibility to control the camera remotely allows who is looking to divert his gaze to get lost for brief moments in the contemplation of the sky and then return to rigid architecture. This continuous up and down is the tension that moves between big dreams and everyday reality.

Una casa abbandonata vicino al centro di una piccola città friulana è stata inghiottita da una fitta vegetazione. Paesaggio naturale e familiare allo stesso tempo, quel luogo racconta un rapporto insolito tra natura e architettura, dove la natura ia avuto il sopravvento. Il progetto presentato da Marina Ferretti si intitola Notes on methods e si compone di un video e di una serie di disegni che riflettono attorno ai concetti di abitazione e natura.

Close to the center of a small Friulian town, an abandoned house has been swallowed up by dense vegetation. It is a natural and, at the same time, familiar landscape: that place narrates about an unusual relationship between nature and architecture, where nature has prevailed. Presented by Marina Ferretti, the project is titled “Notes on Methods”. It consists of a video and a series of sketches reflecting on the concepts of abode and nature.

Tre tende in plastica, ispirate ai paraventi orientali, sono come oggetti di scena, prima o dopo la performance, e riportano immagini tratte dal mio film su Alberto Camerini».

From a series of works dedicated to Italian singer-songwriter Alberto Camerini. The project outlines the peculiarities of his style, bringing together pop, punk, folk and electronic music, inspired on one hand by the Commedia dell’Arte, Tiepolo and Venetian Settecento, and on the other hand by technological innovations and the dawn of the computer age. La maschera di legno è stata fatta ad hoc da Bonario Denti, artigiano della Barbagia, area montagnosa dell’interno della Sardegna, e, se da un lato è ispirata dai costumi di scena di Alberto Camerini, dall’altro si mantiene fedele all’iconografia dell’antico carnevale della Barbagia.

The work is an element from a series of works dedicated to Italian singer-songwriter Alberto Camerini. A wooden mask, especially crafted by artisan Gonario Denti from Barbagia, a mountain area of inner Sardinia, inspired by one of Alberto Camerini’s stage costumes while, at the same time, following the traditional iconography from the Barbagia’s ancient Carnival.

L’aureola è una ‘cosa’ immateriale, che non può essere riprodotta né misurata proprio perché porta in sé l’essenza misteriosa del sacro. Citando il titolo del celebre saggio di Walter Benjamin, l’opera affronta con ironia la questione del sacro e l’idea stessa di sacralità ereditata dalla cultura novecentesca.

A halo is ‘something’ intangible, that can’t be measured or reproduced because of its very sacred nature. Quoting the title of the renowned Walter Benjiamin’s book, Halo ironically approaches the issue of the Sacred and the very idea of sacredness as we know it nowadays through the 20th century cultural heritage.

Impero è un agglomerato di spilli, tenuti assieme da un magnete. È un’opera che evoca una teoria secondo cui il corpo archivia gli ordini ricevuti sotto forma di spine.

La spina secondo Canetti “permane in chi esegue il comando” e Canetti immagina una situazione in cui “si è talmente colmi di spine da non riuscire più a pensare ad altro, a sentire altro”. Impero è l’opera di questa normale saturazione, di questa quotidiana, domestica, pratica dell’ordine.

Empire is an agglomeration of pins, held together by a magnet. It is a work that evokes a theory according to which the body stores the orders received in the form of thorns.

The thorn, or sting, according to Canetti “remains in whoever carries out the order”.

And Canetti imagines a situation in which “you are so full of thorns that you can no longer think of anything else, feel anything else”.

Empire is the oeuvre of this normal saturation, of this daily, domestic, practice of order.

“We were asking ourselves if our Sammlung made sense. The signs we collected and used and re-used in our display—how do they live?

From this question came the idea of building a furniture sort of haunted by the signs themselves, here represented by a lion’s head of medieval inspiration, a myrmecodia sectioned as in an essay of natural history, a Moor head stereotyped from a colonial past. A folder gathers all the writings about Die Furlani-Gobbi Sammlung.”

Il video prende piede da un pensiero sulle pratiche architettoniche tra romanico e IKEA, diventando, attraverso una narrazione sci-fi, una riflessione su pratiche di hacking urbanistico/architettonico (Colin Ward), la sovrapposizione e il cambiamento degli spazi, renotopia (McKenzie Wark) e le conseguenze della riduzione delle utopie ad altari domestici che sublimano il nostro rapporto con la natura (la pubblicità di KRYDDA di IKEA).

The video moves from a suggestion about architectonical practices between romanic sculpture and IKEA, becoming through a sci-fi style narration, a discourse about urbanistic/ architectural practices of hacking (Colin Ward), overlapping and changing of spaces, renotopia (McKenzie Wark) and consequences of the nowadays sizing of the utopias on domestic shrines that sublimates our relation with nature (IKEA’s KRYDDA advertising).

Nel ciclo delle Idroforìe l’attenzione ricade sulla memoria dell’acqua, memoria di cui le sculture si fanno portatrici. Tale elemento è spesso connesso alla vita, ma anche alla morte ed è tra questi due estremi che si inserisce il sedimento mnemonico.

L’acqua feconda, risana, ma anche scava, decompone conservando il ricordo delle sostante con cui è venuta a contatto, così facendosi veicolo di aggregazione tra una pluralità di differenti accadimenti.

In the series of works titled “Idroforie”, the attention falls on the memory of the water, memory of which the sculptures become bearers. Water is often connected to life, but also to death, and it is between these two extremes that the mnemonic sediment is inserted. Water fecundates, heals, but also digs, decomposes by preserving the memory of the substances with which it came into contact, thus becoming a vehicle of aggregation between a plurality of events.

Il ciclo di lavori “Ciò che resta” rappresenta una riflessione sulla preservazione di materiale organico. Un corpo organico libero e la sua inclusione in cera vengono inseriti in contenitori di riuso o in teche che evocano la classificazione dei musei di storia naturale.

In tale maniera viene creato uno scrigno protettivo all’interno del quale è possibile osservare il decorso della decomposizione o il suo arresto.

The series of works titled “Cio’ che resta” (that means “what remains”) is a reflection on preservation of organic material. A free organic material and its inclusion in wax are placed in reuse containers or in caskets that resemble showcases from a natural history museums. In this way a protective box is created inside which it is possible to observe the course of decomposition or its stop.

In questa inedita ricerca sul tempo, da sempre oggetto di riflessioni di filosofi e artisti, l’ossessione non è il numero, che ne nomina il passare, o la data che dà un nome ai giorni, e neppure è il dipanarsi di un corpo di scrittura illeggibile ma significante; questi fogli, popolosi e molteplici, nati dallo svuotarsi della penna sulla carta, sono cancellazione e rivelazione, sono il dimenticarsi per conoscere. Sono i ritmi incessanti in cui prende corpo l’infinito.

Sono lo stile del tempo.

In this research on time, since the past object of reflections by philosophy and art, the obsession is not the number, which names its passing, or the date that gives a name to the days, nor the unravelling of a body of writing illegible but significant; these sheets, populated and multiple, born from the emptying of the pen on paper, are erasure and revelation, they are the forgetting in order to know. They are the incessant rhythms in which Infinite takes shape. They are the style of time.

A seguito di un incidente avuto dall’artista tuffandosi, la diagnosi della rottura di alcune vertebre ha costretto Mazzi a un periodo di sedentarietà. L’artista decide di fare un viaggio in Islanda, luogo in cui la densità umana è ridotta al minimo e i paesaggi si rifanno a un immaginario preistorico. Le ossa dei cetacei galleggiano per mesi sulle acque e gli abitanti raccolgono i resti per decorare i giardini. Anche l’artista li colleziona, portandoli con sè durante le sue camminate.

Following a tragic accident by the artist diving, the diagnosis of the rupture of some vertebrae has forced Mazzi to a period of sedentariness. The artist decides to make a journey to Iceland, where human density is reduced to a minimum and landscapes are based on prehistoric imagery. The bones of cetaceans float for months on the water and the inhabitants collect the remains to decorate the gardens. The artist also collects them and wear them in her walks.

La serie Fractures(s) è parte di un progetto più ampio chiamato A Fragmented World e si riferisce alla “teoria delle fratture” analizzata dal fisico Bruno Giorgini. La visione in macro è sottolineata da una serie di fotoincisioni ricavate dalle fratture laviche del vulcano Etna. Esse indagano texture, strutture, campiture del materiale nei diversi strati, utilizzando un nuovo colore ricavato dalla stessa polvere lavica.

The Fracture(s) series is part of a bigger project called A Fragmented World and it refers to the “fracture theory” analyzed by physicist Bruno Giorgini. The aspect of macro fractures is underlined by a series of photoengravings based on Etna volcano fractures. They underline different textures, structures, areas of morphological aspects of the material, the soil and their different layers by using a new color made out of Etna powder.

Il valore—del nostro tempo, delle nostre azioni, del denaro, ma anche dell’arte e delle opere stesse—è un tema centrale in questa serie di lavori, che sono un commento al mondo dell’arte in relazione al gioco d’azzardo: il titolo di ogni pezzo corrisponde al suo prezzo di vendita (3000 €, 2800 €, 2500 €), deciso da un accordo tra l’artista, il gallerista e, spesso, il compratore, e soggetto alle regole e fluttuazioni del mercato dell’arte.

A series of marble casino chips hanged as they are falling from the sky. Issue of value—of our time, of our actions, of money, and also of art and artworks themselves— are central in this series of works, which are a comment to the art system in relation to gambling: each piece is titled out of its price (3000 €, 2800 €, 2500 €), decided by a common agreement between the artist, the gallerist and even the buyer, and subjected to the rules and fluctuation of the art market.

Le tre sedie da poker costituiscono la continuazione del lavoro con le fiches da gioco. Realizzate con tre differenti tipologie di marmo e posizionate il più lontano possibile tra loro, rappresentano la solitudine del giocatore e le sue abitudine più segrete.

Ogni sedia è personalizzata attraverso gli elementi che vi si trovano appesi. L’artista ha scelto un oggetto che rappresenta un portafortuna e l’ha ricoperto di rame; lo ha successivamente placcato d’oro, in modo tale che l’oggetto originario rimanesse appeso sullo schienale della sedia.

The three poker chairs form the continuation of the work with the casino chips. Made out of three different marbles and placed as far possible the one from the other they represent the loneliness of the player combined with his hidden habits. Each chair gets personalized through the props which are attached on the chair. The artist decides the object that will represent the lucky charm and covers it with copper; then he gold-plates the copper as the actual object is trapped in metal and its hanging by the side of the marble chair.

Una maschera manierista incastonata all’interno di una cancellata industriale.

Due elementi uniti dalla loro funzione originale di arredo urbano ma separati da secoli di evoluzione del concetto stesso di urbanistica. Figure dissonanti che si fondono in un oggetto di alluminio in bilico fra arte e funzione. Quest’opera si stacca dal pavimento negando definitivamente la sua deriva utilitaristica per abbracciare una dimensione spirituale e quasi totemica suggerita dal ghigno enigmatico della maschera.

A Tibetan mask set against an industrial fence. Two elements originally conceived as urban decors but dramatically juxtaposed by the evolution of the concept itself of urbanism over the centuries. Discording elements merging in an aluminum object suspended between art and function.

This artwork, hanging on the wall, shows the definitive negation of its utilitarian form in order to embrace a spiritual and totemic dimension suggested by the grin of the mask.

Testimonianza indelebile del più chiaro dei gesti politici, quest’opera è la conclusione di un atto performativo che inizia con la raccolta di poster di propaganda politica per le strade di Parigi. Dopo aver annullato qualunque messaggio con una campitura di pittura bianca, la carta torna ad essere ambasciatrice attraverso un linguaggio nuovo.

La deflagrazione di una bomba Molotov la rende nuovamente protagonista di un pensiero politico, di rivolta, in cui i brandelli arsi si mischiano con le schegge di vetro.

Permanent evidence of the clearest political gesture, this work is the epitome of a performance that originates from the collection of political propaganda around the streets of Paris. After annihilating any message with white paint, the paper returns to be ambassador through a different language. The explosion of a Molotov cocktail brings her back to a political, revolutionary, message where burnt shreds mix themselves with glass flints.

Il disegno come traccia di Dio è il medium che caratterizza la mia volontà di “essere artista” portandomi in un esperienza conoscitiva, portando un distacco da una tradizione formale di chi vuol fare delle immagini.

L’opera che presento in occasione del Ducato Prize porta un’iconografia poco ricercata nella storia dell’arte se non da Maestro di flemalle, ovvero Robert Campin (Valenciennes, 1378/1379 – Tournai, 1444) che ha dipinto il buon ladrone sulla croce come protagonista principale di un quadro. Ho preso in esame il dipinto e ho cercato di farne uno nuovo appunto tracciando un disegno con la biro e tentando degli esperimenti pittorici che si completano nella loro inadeguatezza, sia nel retro della tela di un double face (sulla facciata principale c’è un nespolo che è stato piantato da mio padre quando sono nato) sia nella carta intelaiata. Il risultato è una totale ambiguità, dato che la crocifissione ci fa pensare subito a una simbologia molto specifica per la nostra cultura.

The understanding of drawing as a sign of God is what characterised my will of “being an artist”, bringing me to a cognitive experience, marking a break with a formal tradition fully dedicated to the creation of images. The artwork I present at the Ducato Prize bears an iconography scarcely witnessed in the art history, except for Robert Campin (Valenciennes, 1378/1379— Tournai, 1444), usually identified as the Master of Flémale, who portrayed the Thief on the Cross as the protagonist of one of his paintings. After examining the painting, I attempted to make a new one, by drawing with a pen and trying a few painting experiments, that complement one an other in their inadequacy, both on the back of a canvas (on the front, one can see a medlar tree, planted by my father when I was born) and on the canvas-backed paper. The result is a total ambiguity, since, in our culture, the crucifixion is connected with a very specific symbology.

Falò è parte di un ciclo di opere nato in Norvegia. La natura estrema e la luce costante dell’estate hanno influenzato molto il mio lavoro. I dettagli dei dipinti si sono sfaldati, le superfici di colore hanno nascosto le forme come agenti atmosferici, tutto è diventato effimero mettendo sempre più in dubbio la linea di separazione tra figurazione e astrazione. Falò nasce dopo la notte del solstizio d’estate, durante la quale i norvegesi si ritrovano attorno a fuochi per festeggiare il culmine della stagione.

Falò is part of a group of works born in Norway. The extreme nature and constant light of summer have deeply influenced my work. The shapes and the lines in the paintings blurred, the spots of color hid the shapes like atmospheric agents. Everything became ephemeral, questioning the thin line between figuration and abstraction.

Falò was born after the night of the summer solstice during which the Norwegians gather around bonfires to celebrate the longest day of the year.

Himmel è parte di un ciclo di opere nato in Norvegia. Ormai da anni continuo, in maniera pigra ma costante, a dipingere quadri che prendono spunto da una stampa—fatta male e ormai provata dalla permanenza nel mio studio—dei soffitti della residenza di Würzburg a opera del Tiepolo. È una pratica quotidiana che continua a interessarmi portandomi a risultati sempre diversi. Himmel è una sorta di cartina tornasole di questo processo durante la mia permanenza nella straniante estate scandinava.

Himmel is part of a group of works born in Norway. For years now, I have been continuing, in a lazy but constant way, to paint inspired by a print—badly done and now wasted in my studio—of the ceilings of the Würzburg residence painted by Tiepolo. It is a daily practice that continues to interest me, leading to results even very different from each other. Himmel is a sort of litmus test of this process during my stay in the alienating Scandinavian summer.

In un inedito quanto insolito tableau vivant, realizzato in una casa privata di Fogliano (Reggio Emilia) con unico spettatore un bambino, l’artista rilegge l’opera omonima di Antonio Donghi del 1927. Questi, creò un teatrino in cui il fratello e il cognato posarono per un doppio ritratto dall’atmosfera sospesa e metafisica. Donghi era solito pescare i suoi costumi di scena da un baule appositamente realizzato, allo stesso modo Presicce, come un direttore di circo, “veste” i due personaggi sulla scena dal pavimento inclinato, incarnando sia il pagliaccio che il domatore. Una tenda, delimita la fine del piano inclinato lasciando una minima apertura centrale tra i due personaggi che sembrano avere un legame profondo come le due facce di un Giano bifronte, ma diversamente dal pagliaccio che ride di una risata beffarda, guardando lo spettatore, il domatore è fiero nel suo sguardo perso nel vuoto e brandisce una frusta.

In an unedited and uncommon tableau vivant, realised in a private house in Fogliano (Reggio Emilia, IT) with a child as unique viewer, the artist rereads the namesake artwork by Antonio Donghi from 1927. Donghi created a scene in which his brother and his brother-in-law posed for a double portrait in an suspended and metaphysical atmosphere.

Donghi was used to pick his stage costumes from a chest especially realised. Similarly, Presicce, as a circus director, poses on the scene with a sloping floor, impersonating both the clown and the tamer. A curtain marks the end of the sloping surface, leaving a small gap between the two characters, who seem to be deeply related to each other as the two faces of Janus. The clown, looking at the viewer, laughs mockingly; on the contrary, the tamer brandishes a whip with a proud, wandering gaze.

Diario di uno spazio 1 è un tentativo di far parlare lo spazio, rendendo soggetto e oggetto interscambiabili nel processo pittorico. Il sé riduce la sua forza di volontà.

Lo spazio è messo nella condizione di esprimersi. Le mani e il corpo trascrivono la sua storia, la sua vita quotidiana. Il processo cerca di interrogare il Soggetto pittorico e il Sé linguistico come primi luoghi in cui si producono e mettono in atto relazioni di potere attraverso oggettificazione, separazione e controllo.

Diary of a space 1 is an attempt at letting the space speak, making the notion of subject and object interchangeable within the painting process. The self decreases its will-power. The space is enabled to express itself. The hands and the body transcribe its story, its daily life. The process aims at questioning the Painting Subject as well as the Linguistic Self, as the first sites in which power relations are produced and deployed through objectification, separation and control.

«Nel mio nuovo studio ci sono due grossi lucernari. Appena ho iniziato a riscaldare lo studio, che di inverno è particolarmente freddo, mi sono accorto che si veniva a creare condensa e le piccole gocce, dall’alto, si riversavano sulle sculture a terra, “battezzandole”. Ho avuto l’intuizione che le gocce di condensa fossero le informazioni rapprese e concentrate che aleggiavano nello studio e che tornavano al lavoro».

“There are two big skylights in my new studio.

From the very beginning, once I started to heat the studio, which is very cold in winter, I noticed that there was condensation and the small drops fell from the ceiling onto the sculptures lying on the ground. In some ways, the drops “christened” the sculptures.

I intuited that the condensing drops were the thickened information, which lingered in the studio and came back to work.”

Un altorilievo di una testa in argilla piange malinconicamente. La testa è legata da fascette di plastica e in tensione nei confronti di un corpo multiforme e dinamico. La figura sembra in fase di fuga. Nella sua tragicità goffa calpesta un fiore, anch’esso in argilla come la testa. “Edelweiss, edelweiss”, è una procedura meticolosa che costruisce un’attitudine alla resistenza quotidiana verso la “conquista dell’inutile”.

The head is tied through plastic bands; it is in tension with the multiforme and dynamic body made of stucco. The figure seems escaping from something. In its clumsy tragic nature, it steps on a flower, made in clay as the head. “Edelweiss, edelweiss” is an accurate process which creates an attitude for the daily resistance towards “a conquer of the uselessness”.

Un mondo sdoppiato tra interno ed esterno, tra universale e particolare, tra storia collettiva e biografia personale è “Il Paesaggio”, inteso sia come scenografia dell’esistente che come combinazione di segni. In “Flying over...” la posizione visiva dominante di un drone ci introduce in un mondo onirico e caleidoscopico. In “I’ve just seen...”, c’è l’orizzonte che divide il mare dal cielo in un piccolo scatto reso surreale dalla presenza contemporanea di due soli. In “Untitled (this world...)”, due sfere sintetiche, riaffiorate dalla sabbia di una spiaggia, si trasformano in due “mondi”.

“Il Paesaggio” is a world split between inside and outside, universal and particular, collective history and individual biography, and conceived both as a scenography of what exists and as combination of signs.

In “Flying over…” the point of view of a drone introduces us in a dreamlike and kaleidoscopic world. In “I’ve just seen…”, one can see the horizon which divides the sea from the sky in a photograph made surreal by the simultaneous presence of two suns.

In “Untitled (this world…)”, two synthetic spheres, emerged from the sand of a beach, become two “worlds”.

Al di là dello spazio, al di là del colore c’è un momento, un attimo in cui tutto è sospeso, come annullato. Il colore bianco si staglia monocromo sulla tavola. Non ci sono riferimenti temporali precisi, tutto sembra suggerire qualcosa che è assopito nell’immaginario personale di ciascun visitatore. Una grande tavola lignea, che riprende le linee essenziali di una fotografia di Luigi Ghirri, epurata del colore e resa tridimensionale. L’immagine si fa scultura e lo sguardo va oltre la semplice visione.

Beyond the space, beyond the color, there’s a moment, in which everything is suspended, canceled. Color white stands out against the background, a poetry of vision explodes in the silence of the space. There are no precise time references, everything suggests something which is dormant in the personal imaginary of each visitor. A big wooden table recalls the essential lines of a photography by Luigi Ghirri; the image has been made bigger, the color removed and it has been made three-dimensional, becoming a sculpture.

Il volume in vetro soffiato a mano è un elemento di forma organica che si rifà alla moltiplicazione cellulare, concepito riflettendo sul sistema di referenze proveniente dalla rivalutazione dell’oggetto, della forma e del contenuto. L’elemento è avvolto in una sacca di tela che ne rivela una porzione.

La rivalutazione del significato avviene con l’azione creativa sul significante e la scelta di installare l’opera sospesa.

The hand-blown glass volume is an organic form element that refers to cellular multiplication, conceived by thinking about the system of references suggested by the re-evaluation of the object, its shape and content. The element is wrapped in the canvas bag. The re-evaluation of the meaning takes place through the creative action on the signifier and the choice to install the work suspended.

Il soggetto dell’opera fotografica è un esempio d’uso di un object-trouvé e la rivalutazione dell’oggetto stesso attraverso la sua creazione. Il significante agisce sul significato e sulla resa fotografica finale.

Il manico rotto di una tazza da tè funge da piedistallo a un elemento di creta. I due elementi, sovrapposti e fotografati, vengono percepiti dall’osservatore come un’opera di dimensioni simili a quelle di un monolite.

The subject of the work is an example of the use of the object-trouvé and the revaluation of the object itself through its creation. The signifier acts on the content and on the final result. The broken handle of a teacup serves as a pedestal for a piece of molded clay. The two elements, on top of each other and photographed, are perceived as a work of dimensions similar to those of a monolith.

Questo disegno funziona imitando la nostra ingannevole capacità percettiva nell’osservare forme troppo piccole. L’immagine è ingrandita centinaia di volte e nella sua interezza appare piatta, sfocata e semplice; avvicinandosi, però, svela la complessità di cui è composta: uno zoom esagerato di una muffa gialla super intelligente dalla quale neuroni e assoni affiorano fusi assieme al fungo, creando comunicazioni che si radicano a distanza, intessute in un horror vacui giallo acido.

This drawing works by imitating our deceptive perceptual abilities in observing forms that are too small. The image is enlarged hundreds of times and, observed in its entirety, appears flat, blurred and simple; however, approaching it reveals its complexity: an exaggerated zoom of a super intelligent yellow mold from which neurons and axons emerge fused together with the mushroom and create communications that take root at a distance, woven into an acid yellow horror vacui.

Test I è l’esito di un test per malattie sessualmente trasmissibili il cui risultato è stato parzialmente coperto con un disegno in foglia d’oro che ricostruisce, a memoria, la mappa di un cruising club per soli uomini.

I due livelli—il foglio del referto e il disegno in foglia d’oro—si sovrappongono a vicenda.

La loro aderenza esprime simbolicamente l’inquietudine per una potenziale infezione virale e le sue possibili cause, che sono connesse al piacere.

Test I is a personal STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) medical report which has been partially covered with a gold leaf drawing, a reconstruction, by memory, of the map of a men’s cruising club.

Two layers—the medical report’s paper sheet and the gold leaf drawing—are overlaying each other and signify an interweaving between the concern for potential viral infection and its possible cause, that is connected to pleasure.

Il dipinto cita il manuale di radiologia ‘Positioning In Radiography’ del 1939, che illustra le posizioni da mantenere durante gli esami radiologici, attraverso fotografie in bianco e nero, concepite a scopo scientifico, che hanno tuttavia un potenziale poetico.

Studiando queste immagini, l’artista ha chiesto a un’amica di reinterpretare alcune delle posizioni illustrate sul manuale e una di queste fotografie è stata utilizzata come riferimento per questo ritratto.

The painting references the 1939 medical book ‘Positioning In Radiography’, which researches the positioning technique for diagnostic radiographers. These black and white photographs, conceived for medical- scientific purposes, have an intrinsic poetical allure. While studying these images, the artist asked a friend to re-enact some of the positions illustrated in the book and one of these photographs has been taken as reference for this portrait.

Seguendo come filo conduttore l’impatto che alcuni settori dell’industria dell’intrattenimento (dall’immaginario videoludico alla Realtà Virtuale) hanno sulla nostra società, il video dialoga con lo spettatore ponendo dei quesiti su questioni tanto ataviche quanto profondamente attuali. L’intenzione è quella di provare a comprendere la nebulosità di questa nuova era oscura, prendendo in analisi la propria concezione del tempo in relazione alla cultura capitalista.

Following, as central thread, the entertainment industry (from video-gaming to VR applications), and the impact it has on our society, the video creates a dialogue with the viewers, raising questions on societal phenomena that are both ancient and contemporary. The goal is to let the spectators experience and be immersed into the “fogginess” of our new dark era, starting by analyzing their very own conception of time in relation to a capitalist culture.

Se il processo di democratizzazione di Internet ha permesso di entrare nella vita degli altri, la stessa tecnologia, per sua natura volubile e instabile, può involontariamente vietare questo tipo di condivisione. Tra errori di sistema, mancanza di connessione o altri problemi, ciò che è stato concepito per consentire una divulgazione capillare dell’immagine può tramutarsi in uno strumento di censura facendoci avvertire un senso di disagio sia online che offline.

If the process of democratization of the Internet has allowed anyone to enter into other people’s private life, it seems necessary to note that technology itself, by its voluble nature, can involuntarily ban this very kind of sharing process. Because of many technical issues, what has been conceived to allow the spreading of images can become a tool of censorship, making us feel uncomfortable both in an online and an offline condition.

Le opere nascono da una personale riflessione sul paesaggio attraverso un particolare e continuo processo di osservazione. Due creature marine, avvistate nell’istante della loro apparizione tra le onde del Santuario Pelagos (un’area per la protezione dei mammiferi marini del Mediterraneo), diventano soggetto scultoreo e vengono ripensate come a dei moderni “protomi” (elementi decorativi diffusi nell’arte antica costituiti da teste e busti di figure umane, animalesche o fantastiche).

The works come from a personal reflection on the landscape through a particular and continuous observation process. Two sea creatures, sighted at the instant of their appearance in the waves of the Pelagos Sanctuary (an area for the protection of Mediterranean’s marine mammals), become a sculptural subject and are reconsidered as modern “protomes” (a type of adornment, that takes the form of the head and upper torso of a human, and of real or mythic animals, widespread in art ancient times).

In contrasto alle classiche caratteristiche aggettanti di questi elementi scultorei, le linee concave dei Pelagos danno vita a dei poggiatesta, evocando così un rovesciamento tra il soggetto osservatore e l’oggetto osservato. Nella parte superiore delle sculture, delle scanalature a forma di corallo e ali segnano, con la loro assenza, una delicata impronta che rimanda altrove, a una struttura narrativa non ancora svelata.

As opposed to the classic protruding characteristics of these sculptural elements, the concave lines of the Pelagos give life to headrests, thus evoking a reversal between the observer and the observed object. In the upper part of the sculptures, coral-shaped grooves and wings mark, with their absence, a delicate imprint that refers elsewhere, to a narrative structure not yet revealed.

I video vengono proiettati su due schermi posti uno di fronte all’altro. Il posizionamento non permette allo spettatore di fruire della storia nella sua interezza, ma solo in parte.

Allo spettatore è così imposta una distanza di osservazione “della donna” controllata, dove la sua vulnerabilità è svelata, esternata, ma le sue forme restano parzialmente nascoste. L’opera invita dunque alla comprensione, ma di fatto la rende impossibile. Questo processo riflette il continuo tentativo di comprensione reciproca e come esso, in una certa misura, fallisca sempre.

The channels are projected separately onto two screens, facing each other at a distance.

The locations of the screens allow the viewers to experience only part of the story but not the whole at the same time. The work draws the audiences into a controlled distance to observe “the woman,” where vulnerability is unveiled, externalized, and repeated in raw, honest, but also partially concealed forms. It invites their understanding but also rejects a complete one. This process mirrors how recurrently do we attempt to understand one and the other, but almost always fail to a certain extent.

“Un uomo anziano nel mare, solo, guarda le onde della marea. Le nuvole nere abbronzano la sua pelle. I suoi capelli brillano di un argento opaco. La pioggia scende e l’acqua spinge.

Si muove di due passi avanti e di tre indietro.

I suoi piedi toccano delicatamente la sabbia dura. L’aria densa e umida gli sfiora la pelle, quando lui si gira un po’ verso di me. Questo è il mio ricordo di quel giorno.

“An old man stands in the sea, alone, facing the wave of the tide. The dark clouds tans and wrinkles his skin. His hair shines in silver but dull. The rain drips, and the water pushes.

He moves two steps forward and three steps back. His feet softly touch the hard sand.

The thick and damp air brushes his skin, as he turns a little bit towards, possibly me.

And that is how I remembered that day.”

«Cerco di avere lavori precisi dal punto di vista formale perché, nonostante io abbia un approccio punk, non mi piacciono dei risultati scadenti», dice Zaccagnini, con un chiaro riferimento a Jean Dubuffet e all’Art Brut.

«A volte bellezza e bruttezza sono molto vicini.

Fin dal Rinascimento si cerca la risposta alla domanda “che cos’è la bellezza”, ma la bellezza è un momento, qualcosa che si mostra da sé, non qualcosa che si può controllare e riprodurre come un medium».

Questi nuovi lavori non sono monumentali come normalmente sono le sculture. Sono vuoti all’interno, ma hanno una struttura funzionale, possono essere messi sul divano, sulla parete, o ci si può dormire sopra.

«In un certo senso, cerco di liberarli dalla funzionalità. Quando comincio a lavorarci, hanno una funzione; dopo che ci ho lavorato, non ce l’hanno più. Sono tesi fino alla rottura, sono tagliati».

“Formally, I’m trying to have precise works, because although I have a punk approach, I don’t like trashy results” Zaccagnini says, and obviously references Jean Dubuffet and Art Brut. “Sometimes beauty and ugliness are so close. Since the renaissance people tried to have an answer for what beauty is, but beauty is a moment, something that shows itself, not something you can manage or reproduce as a medium”.

These new works are not monumental like sculptures normally are. They are empty inside, but have a functional structure, which allows them to be put on the couch, put on the wall, slept on. “In a way, I try to keep the functionality away. When I start working on them, they have a function, and after I have worked on them, they have no function. They are stretched until broken, they are cut”.

Una speculazione su ciò che avviene nella solitudine della propria stanza. La scoperta di sé stessi, la sperimentazione sul proprio corpo e il desiderio sessuale sono al centro del lavoro. Sono tutti elementi che appartengono alla sfera del sesso non riproduttivo e per questo motivo eliminati dal Capitale e demonizzati dallo stesso, perché non utili, appunto, alla produzione e ai meccanismi da esso previsti. Forme demoniache si mischiano così a un’immagine-fantasia legata al potere creativo della masturbazione.

A speculation about what happens in the privacy of one’s bedroom. The discovery of themselves, the experimentation with one’s own body and the sexual desire are at the centre of the work. These are all elements belonging to the non-reproductive sexual sphere and, for this reason, they have been eliminated and demonized from the Capital, because of their uselessness to its production and its mechanisms. Demonic shapes mix with an image-fantasy linked to the creative power of masturbation.

Lavoro facente parte della serie di composizioni ancora in corso Two Identical Clocks. Gli interventi scultorei nascono dall’assemblaggio a volte casuale di oggetti che appartengono all’edilizia e all’ambiente domestico, e arrivano da un ragionamento sulla casa e la famiglia come luogo dove vengono messi in atto processi di normalizzazione dei corpi e dei ruoli.

La base su cui costruisco la mia recente ricerca è la cosiddetta promessa della felicità.
