Bromsgrove Society Summer Season Talks – via Zoom!

n three consecutive Wednesdays in July beginning on the 1st at 2.30pm, there will be a free afternoon talk hosted online using the Zoom platform. These talks are being held in place of the cancelled Summer School and will cover aspects of local history and how to get involved in our local heritage. 1st July 2020 at 2.30pm The History of Perry Hall with Julian Hunt There is more to Perry Hall than the Housmans. Bromsgrove Historian Julian Hunt will introduce us to Roger Lowe, the leading Royalist at the time of the Civil War, Benjamin Humphrys, the 18th century linen manufacturer, and John Adams, worsted manufacturer whose sister married a Housman. He will attempt to dispel some myths about the picturesque ruins to the south east of the house, and he will tell us how Perry Hall came to be a hotel!

8th July 2020 at 2.30pm Tracing Your Ancestors in Worcestershire with Mike Sharpe Mike is a professional genealogist, researcher and writer with a passion for unear thing the past and telling a good story. His talk will provide an introduction to tracing your family history within the historic boundaries of Worcestershire. Mike explains the key sources, both online and offline, for tracking down your ancestors within the county, what the various record sets contain and where they are held. Sources covered include censuses, parish registers, wills, the poor law, apprenticeships, and legal records.

15th July 2020 at 2.30pm The Bromsgrove Guild and Where to See Their Work When the Lockdown is Over! with Quintin Watt Former Head of History at South Bromsgrove High School and former chairman of our Local History Group, Quintin Watt will tell us about the well respected Bromsgrove Guild. His presentation will provide a brief overview of the Bromsgrove Guild’s interesting story. Quintin will feature some examples of the Guild’s work - in various media - and tell us where to see pieces locally, in the Black Country and in other places close to its birthplace, when the lockdown is over!
