Walking rounders makes worldwide debut at last!
April saw a world first with the launch of Walking Rounders by Bromsgrove Walking Sports Centre.
Centre owner Alan Gormley told Completely Bromsgrove how the new sport came about.

“Several months ago we asked our 160 participants if they’d like to add another sport to the five we already have - walking versions of cricket, netball, hockey, football and rugby. They said ‘yes’ and chose rounders to be that sport,” said Alan.
“I contacted Rounders England, the national governing body for rounders, and they were keen on the idea. One of their key objectives is to grow participation and they were looking for someone with a proven track record to work with to develop Walking Rounders.

“We’ve been working closely with them since January and had a joint development day at the end of February which attracted 30 players. We’ve managed to secure two grants from Sport England with the help of Rounders England and Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire that will enable us to fully fund our initial sessions and get the equipment we need.
“We’re looking to affect people who are inactive, who would benefit from a healthy, fun and social environment. To do this the funding will enable us to subsidise participation for those who are struggling financially.”
There are three Walking Rounders sessions per week: Mondays and Fridays from 10am to 11am on the lower field AstroTurf at Bromsgrove Cricket, Hockey & Tennis Club and Fridays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm in the sports hall at North Bromsgrove High School.
