Relief as Sporting FC avoid the drop

The run to the end of March was a tough time for Bromsgrove Sporting, losing seven matches in nine that saw them slip down the table hovering above the relegation zone.

A draw at league leaders Coalville Town gave them a big morale boost but two days later Sporting went down 4-3 at home to Stourbridge after leading 2-0 with just ten minutes to go.

The last home match of the season was against inform Barwell, but a 2-0 win gave the Rouslers three points and with other clubs losing, their position in the Southern League Premier Division Central for next season was assured.

As with most sports clubs, awards are presented at the end of the season with goalkeeper Ollie Taylor securing the ballot for the supporters’ player of the season. Manager Mike McGrath gave his award to striker Brandon Smalley whilst the players themselves voted for their captain Tom Taylor.

Eighteen-year-old Ayo Lekuti secured the young player of the season and the directors’ special award was given to physio Gavin Blackwell for his sterling work on the treatment table.

The season is far from over for Sporting’s Ladies and Veterans teams who have fixtures up to the end of May. The Ladies have eight matches to play and at the time of writing sit fifth in their league with games in hand on their rivals. The Veterans have just four matches left and lie second in their table so a high finish is expected.

A number of the Colts’ seasons finished before Easter with several winning honours that they showed off during the half time interval of the first team’s last home match. They are now looking at the next campaign and recruiting so anyone interested should contact them via email at colts@bromsgrovesporting.co.uk
