eart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) have recently been exploring just ‘HoW’ to support their prospective apprentices prepare for studying and working in the ‘new normal’. Over the past few weeks, HoW College have implemented a number of methods to assist students looking to embark on the next leg of their educational journey and begin an apprenticeship. In place of a physical open event, the College hosted a virtual talk where members of the team explained the process of applying for an apprenticeship, which apprenticeships the College offers, and a summary of the programme. HoW then followed up with a phone call to each person that attended the event to find out more about them, what they want to do and how the College can support them. Staff also explained what it is like working in specific industries, such as construction and IT. HoW have additionally carried out mock interviews to help prepare prospective apprentices with applying for apprenticeships and provided feedback and tips to help them in the future. Apprenticeships combine a nationally recognised standard with on the job training, giving apprentices the opportunity to study whilst also gaining valuable (and paid) work experience. With HoW College, anyone can register their interest or apply for an apprenticeship via the College website. A member of their apprenticeships team, also known as Solutions, will then contact those interested to complete a personal profile, review any apprenticeship vacancies that might be suitable, and provide advice on how to navigate the National Apprenticeship Service. The team will also continue to offer their support and guidance throughout the programme.
