Legacy Trail

A GIFT FROM SARASOTA COUNTY’S PAST TO ITS FUTURE By Sylvia Whitman

The longest-running hit in Sarasota County is not a song, dance or play but a narrow ribbon of pavement: The Legacy Trail, where you will find people of all ages walking, jogging, bicycling and rollerblading daily from 6 am until sunset.

nveiled in 2006 and paved two years later, the first 12.5-mile stretch began at the Venice Historic Railroad

Depot and tracked the CSX railroad corridor north to what is now Culverhouse Nature Park in Palmer Ranch. The off-road path through the county’s historical and environmental assets was so well-received that in November 2018, 70.6% of voters approved issuing $65 million in bonds to extend the Legacy Trail north to downtown Sarasota and then southeast toward North Port. The nearly 8-mile northern extension opened in 2022, and usage has soared. Chip joined the company in June 2022 after a highly successful nearly 10-year real estate career in upstate New York as an award-winning agent, branch director and regional vice president. Murphy, 32, was born and raised in upstate New York’s Finger Lakes region, and grew up around the real estate business from a young age while his father was working as a selling broker at his local brokerage. 60

hile majoring in pre-law and business management in college, Murphy did freelance work for a real estate law firm in the summers and took a couple of real-estaterelated classes. Although his final college project was on international real estate markets and he obtained his real estate license before graduating, his sights were set on becoming a corporate attorney, the career he had envisioned since his teens. However, after his first year of law school, with an internship lined up with a federal magistrate judge, Murphy had “an epiphany” that a legal career wasn’t the right path. With a passion for building relationships, he went to work as a salesperson for a company his father started, becoming a top producer in both his office and the market. After four years, Murphy became a branch director with a large real estate company in Rochester, NY, earning the companywide Branch of the Year award and being named to the National Association of REALTORS® prestigious “30 Under 30,” recognizing 30 rising stars in the industry under the age of 30. Soon after, he was promoted to regional vice president, overseeing eight branch offices, leadership staff and administrative professionals, and assisting in recruiting and growing the company. We sat down with Chip to learn more about him and his role with Michael Saunders & Company. Q: Who have been the strongest influences in your life? A: It’s hard to select a few because there are so many that come to mind. My mother taught me to treat others in a way that I’d want to be treated. My father taught me the importance of grit and hard work. Many of my close friends motivate me to be the best version of myself. One of those good friends who is also a real estate broker, Ryan, has always said to “view the greatest challenges as massive opportunities.” I’m lucky to have had wonderful mentors, colleagues and friends who have shaped my perspective into what it is today. Q: Which attributes led to your success at a young age? A: It all boils down to valuing relationships. When I started in this business as an agent, I never viewed my work as transactional. It was investing in building and developing a relationship that someone would trust a then 23-year-old to advise and lead the journey in purchasing or selling their (likely) most valuable asset. I’ve continued with that servant mentality by putting others before myself and being able to empathize. Much of my success can be attributed to the people who surround me, as I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from mentors and colleagues who are far more impressive. Q: What are your day-to-day job responsibilities? A: Every day is different, but a main focus of mine is ensuring that we are delivering the best experience for our agents and their customers. A critical piece of my role is working with the leaders of our core services companies – MSC Mortgage, MSC Title and our

insurance joint venture – finding solutions to issues and executing on those growth plans. I work closely with Drayton and the leadership team in identifying areas of improvement and strategizing how we continue to be the market leaders in the communities that we serve. Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? A: Again, it’s the people. The beauty of my role is collaboration – with our agents, branch and division leadership, support staff, and other brokers in the industry. Executing creatively and strategically are what make this role exciting and challenging. Q: Can you share some of your big-picture company goals? Q: What are your hobbies/interests? A: I love to travel and spend time with family and friends. I’m a big foodie, so I’m always excited when a new restaurant pops up. Some of my favorite Sarasota restaurants are Kojo, Selva and Veronica. I own a couple of investment properties in New York, with a personal goal to add another each year. Those investment properties are on (or near) Keuka Lake where I grew up, so I love to spend time there in the summer. I also like to downhill ski in the winter, and play tennis, pickleball and golf all year long! Q: Tell us about your family. A: My extended family is all across the country, and my parents, sister and nieces live in upstate New York. I live in Sarasota with my French bulldog pup, Henry.

ith the goal of reducing speeds, roundabouts were installed as a traffic-calming feature to create a more walkable and pedestrian-friendly downtown. They are a safer, more efficient alternative to traditional signalized intersections, improving traffic flow and circulation. In 2013, the City Commission decided future roundabouts should include public artwork, bolstering Sarasota’s reputation as an arts and cultural community. international artists. More than just ornamental, the meanings behind these artistic pieces are illuminating and inspiring. Embracing Our Differences, the first roundabout artwork in Sarasota, was installed in 2016 at Main Street and Orange Avenue. Created by Blessing Hancock, this colorful sculpture of intertwining infinity symbols pays homage to the city’s diversity and inclusion. As you approach the artwork from North or South Orange, you will see a large infinity loop filled with four colorful panels in bright green, red, yellow, and blue. Moving around the sculpture, you will see that the filled-in loop is bisected by a second infinity loop that is open and see-through. As you continue to circle the artwork, multiple infinity loops emerge, some with color and some without, in different color combinations, and in negative space. Intertwined infinity signs represent eternal love, limitless possibilities, continuity and wholeness. The use of primary colors fits the theme of diversity and inclusion, as these are the colors from which all other colors are created. This sculpture symbolizes the interconnectedness of our diverse society and the many different ways we can all be unique and still belong. A clever and stunning work of art, Embracing Our Differences is an inspiring and beautiful addition to Sarasota’s downtown landscape.

Bravo! by Jorge Blanco, Orange Avenue and Ringling Blvd (2018), Aluminum, Stainless Steel and Powder Coating In 2018, Jorge Blanco’s BRAVO! was installed in the Orange Avenue and Ringling Avenue roundabout. This wonderfully kinetic work of art features multiple sections of painted stainless-steel pieces curving and undulating, some of which are capped off with primary-colored geometric shapes. Festive and dynamic, this sculpture captures the moment enthusiastic audience members shout “Bravo!” after witnessing a spectacular artistic performance. Known for his monumental artworks that embrace the optimism of everyday life, Jorge Blanco is a Venezuelan-born sculptor who has lived and worked in Sarasota since 1999. His inspiration for BRAVO! was Sarasota’s cultural energy. Looking upon this animated artwork, it is easy to see the vibrant passion, fervent spirit, and exhilarating motion encapsulated within its forms. A jubilant work of art, BRAVO! is a reminder that the arts can uplift our spirits and bring us together. The following year, in 2019, Jeff Laramore’s Jumping Fish was installed at Palm Avenue and Cocoanut Avenue. A graceful sculpture capturing the moment a fish breaks through the water’s surface, Laramore was inspired by Sarasota Bay’s varied sea life and our coastal setting. Made of painted aluminum, the orange fish is elegantly shaped by upward sweeping lines that express the momentum and energy necessary to make the leap. Two circles of varying size perfectly capture the effect of ripples in the water caused by the fish’s movement, while vertical blue arcs depict splashes of water. Located just a few blocks from the Bayfront, this charming piece perfectly represents the beauty and abundance of the marine life surrounding us.

By transforming traffic roundabouts into vibrant works of art that showcase Sarasota’s spirit, the Art in the Roundabouts Program has proven that urban functionality and artistic expression can beautifully coexist. These sculptural installations not only help manage traffic, but they also enrich the city’s cultural landscape, creating an environment where art is not confined to galleries but is woven into the fabric of daily life. Becoming a trailblazer in the realm of roundabout art, Sarasota hopes to be an inspiration to other cities. Presently, there are two more roundabouts slated for artwork — one at 10th Street and US 41 and the other at 14th Street and US 41. We can’t wait to see how future roundabout artwork will beautify our city, blending art and function in true Sarasota style.
