MICHAEL LANDRY A little bit about me.

Hi! My name is Michael Landry and I’m a senior at Johnson and Wales studying graphic design and digital media. I started getting into graphic design by watching my cousin design at a very young age and inspired me to start designing. At the age of 17 I started my first internship at North Sales working under the art director and created long term design projects for their website. At the age of 18 I became an Adobe Certified Associate in Graphic Design & Illustration Using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Since then I have been focused on getting my degree andpursuing a full time career in design.

powerstick Creating branding for a lesser known company.

programs used:

The project was to create a marketing design for a product from the dollar store that didn’t have much branding . The hardest problem I faced was photographing the product in a professional way that would look nice combined with the branding ideas I planned on creating. I chose the powerstick after shave because it is a somewhat known brand but didn’t have much branding . The audience in mind while creating was young adult men that were looking for a new product to use. I made the decision to use the same color pallet and fonts all throughout the design to keep it looking clean and cohesive. One constraint that I faced was creating similar ads with the same design elements and not making it look exactly the same. Overall the design is modern and works well with the photography taken of the product.

Bebas Creating a font book.

programs used:

For This project I had to create a font book. When hearing these guidelines for this project I automatically knew that I wanted to do Bebas for my font. When I first started designing I instantly fell in love with Bebas. I love how modern and sleek it looks. In my design I used a handwritten style font to contrast the bold harsh lines of Bebas. With contrasting in mind I used a brush to add rough lines in bright colors on the the edges of each page.

Merak Menu design.

This project was a team effort amongst two fellow classmates and I. My responsibilities were to create the menu and the instagram posts. I created two menus, one was for print and one was for mobile ordering. This was the first project I had working with a real client for a project. With feedback and revisions I was able to create a menu that the culinary team loved. My biggest struggle was finding imagery to go along with the menu and making it fit within the design without making the menu feel too overwhelming.

annual report Redesigning an annual report.

The project was to redesign an annual report. The hardest problem I faced was redesigning the annual report while trying to keep the target audience in mind. I chose an episcopal church’s annual report to recreate because it had all of the necessary design elements and it was lacking some creative design. The audience in mind while creating was religious people of all ages. I made the decision to make all of the photos black and white and leave one object in color to make it stand out and draw your attention to the most important part.

One constraint that I faced was deciding how to reorganize their information and making it fit into the new layout I created. With user experience in mind I was able to create an eye catching annual report that will keep the reader interested throughout their entire experience reading.

Photography is something I love to do for fun in my free time. So I have included my personal photography along with photos I took in photography class. I am constantly improving my photography skills and learning new things everyday. I currently shoot with a Canon T3i DSLR and I take my Canon G7X mark II for when I’m on the go and don’t have the room to lug around a huge dslr and equipment.

university of vermont Building a college acceptance package for incoming college freshman.

The project was to create a college acceptance package for incoming freshmen that would help students commit to your college. The hardest problem I faced was following a college’s brand guidelines in order to create the product successfully. I chose the college University of Vermont and then went a little deeper and chose the Film and television major to focus my project around. The audience in mind while creating was creative people who were interested in film. I made the decision to turn the box the students receive into a film reel. One constraint that i faced was carving into the metal tin to allow me to be able to have film coming out of the side of the package. With enough tools I was able to create a slit in the side of the tin. With user experience in mind I was able to create the movie reel tin that gives off a long lasting impression before even opening up the tin to see the free gifts given to the student.

The simple Life Motion Graphics.

Motion graphics was one of my favorite classes to take throughout my four years at Johnson and Wales University because it was a new application that let me express my creativity in a new way. My biggest constraint was learning how to use After Effects.This project took many hours to complete and from start to finish you can see how much more proficient I got within After Effects. The project we did in that class was recreating an intro to a tv show or movie. The tv show I chose was The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

This show was my inspiration because it was the show I was currently binging. This project was extremely fun to create because in this project we were able to bring in illustrations into the project.

Fitness design Creating a brand.

This project was for a friend of mine starting a small business so I was honored that he contacted me to help create his brand. I created a logo for Jake incorporating his ideas and aesthetic. Then was assigned the task to create other possible merchandise like apparel and a shaker bottle. I use a large and bold san serif to create this look with a dumbbell at the bottom for some imagery.

For this project I had to create two type posters that would show off the font of my choice and its properties. I had to choose a serif and a san serif font. For my serif font I chose Baskerville Because I thought it was a very old looking font and I wanted the challenge of creating a fun poster with a little bit of color. For my san serif font I chose Helvetica because I thought it was a classic font with clean lines and sharp edges. I chose to keep this poster in all black and white to create a modern and polished look.

The project was to take an article and recreate the graphics and layout of the article with original pictures to go along with it. The hardest problem I faced was choosing my font pairings that would allow for a fun but professional look. I chose to find an article about Christmas in New York to recreate because my favorite city is New York and I had a trip planned during the time of the assignment and would allow for me to capture photos to go along with the article. The audience in mind while creating was people who enjoy traveling at any age. I made the decision to create the New york skyline as a footer in christmas colors to connect the two pages and make the readers eyes flow from left to right. With user experience in mind I was able to successfully create a small magazine with great design and text elements.

BOOK REDESIGN Revamping a book cover.

Freshman year I had to hand draw a book cover of any book of my choice. I chose Alice in Wonderland because it was one of my favorites growing up. Sophomore year I was able to turn my drawing into an illustrated design. The illustrated version is almost a complete replica of the book cover that I drew. Throughout this book cover I wanted to incorporate a checkered pattern throughout my design to look like a chess board. Finally I drew a pawn chess piece and added Alice’s hair to the top of it.

roxo radient Creating and designing a brand.

programs used:

The project was to create a set of 4 products and branding to go along with it. The hardest problem I faced was creating a unique design that would stand out amongst the competition without looking similar to so many current products. I chose to create the brand ROXO Radient because my design inspiration came from purple toning shampoo and I knew I wanted to create a line of purple products. So I translated the word purple to Portuguese to get Roxo. I then had to decide what word I wanted to pair with ROXO to make it sound nice and I ended up choosing radiant because of the alliteration. The audience in mind while creating was young adults with blonde hair that were looking for a way to remove brassy tones. I made the decision to take photos and make them duotone and use them as a background to create something that would stand out and make the product easy to identify. One constraint that i faced was using different pictures and matching up the colors in the duotone process.
